He's so unorganized. I'm doing really well in his class and getting an A but I basically have to teach myself most of the time. Attendance is mandatory. JOKE! He writes all over the board and talks so fast over most of the concepts. His homework is from the book but he does not care if you do it or not. Avoid him. Dr. P is much better.
Dr. Schweppe is an amazing teacher. He cares about his students and really takes his time to help. If you go to his office hours and ask specific questions, he is great(doesn't get mad). It's a hard class, but if you try you can get an A. He likes to see you are trying. Only thing is he kinda goes off topic.
Very unorganized!!!! His lectures are so confusing. His tests are confusing as well. Grade inflation. Save yourself and stay away!!! Btw, he takes your phone away if he sees you're texting in class. treated his students like we're still in high school.
Unorganized! He tends to skim through stuffs. Talks really fast. can't understand him most of the time. He made mistakes on his tests too. He grades hard and takes off lots of points on your test. He takes away your phone if he sees you use it during class. I wouldn't recommend. Try to take Dr. P
He talks too fast. His lectures and labs are unorganized. Usually use lab time to teach lectures and cannot explain the problems clearly. You had better read the textbook by yourself.
Great instructor! As long as you attend his lectures and pay attention, you will do great. He really takes his time and try to make his students understand the material.
In any science class, expect things to be difficult. He seems pretty clear in his lectures and tries to makes things interesting and simple. Very helpful in class and is willing to help students (even in the middle lecture). He really likes to help students achieve an A. Super strict on attendance for labs.
Overall a good instructor for general chemistry (I don't know about OChem). He lectures on board so make sure to take notes and pay attention because it will help you on the exams. No homework but he gives a weekly list of suggested problems from the book. Strict on attendance. Doesn't let you use electronic devises (phones, laptops, etc.) :)
His lectures are very fast paced and NOT clear. His tests aren't fully on what he covers. He gives out work sessions which are supposed to be study guides but the test questions end up actually being challenge questions of the work session. Don't take him, only if you have to last resort. He does talk clearly, but very fast.
Overall great instructor. He gives out a lot of work sessions that he will go over with the class which I found really helpful. I would recommend him, as long as you are willing to work on all the work session stuff and pay close attention in class. His exams are straight forward and he offers a lot of chances to get extra points.
Professor Schweppe is very knowledgable and teaches very effectively. He does care about his students understanding the material and will suggest going to his office hours. However, you need to do the recommended homework he assigns although it's not collected. During lab, he goes around to ensure the experiments are done correctly.
If you come to class prepared and ask him the right questions, there's no reason you won't get an A. Would definitely take him again.
Dr. Schweppe is old fashion and writes everything on the board so brush up on your note taking skills. The material is difficult but if you read the chapters and DO the recommended hw you will find his tests a lot easier. He does not drop tests but does see your efforts and progress and offers extra points. Overall great teacher.
Expect to read the book ahead of class, because his lectures may not be super clear if you didn't read or look up the concepts. Theres a lot of work sessions to be completed and he expects you to finish them before lab ends. Test and quizzes are based from lecture notes, work sessions and labs. So be sure to study them. Overall pretty good class...
Chem 12B is not an easy class, so be prepared to buckle down and study. As long as you take good notes in Dr. schweppe's class, do the work sessions, assigned assignments, along with the recommended hw, and read the chapters for clarification, you will be fine. He is a fair professor and will recognize your genuine effort. I would take him again
His tests are hard that it is impossible to pass. take it with Dr. P. His lectures were veryyyy long. He even took over the lab time to explain his lectures. Hard test. Hard grader. marked you off for very little things. Favored some students compared to others. Very unorganized and not helpful because he often writes all over the board
Good: No home work, Listens, Breaks mid lecture, organized, fair, he cares Bad: He's too hyper (coffee freak), half the time he goes too fast, it's okay to tell him to slow his roll lol Other: Exams are mostly taken from lab, understand the lab! Extra credit on exams. He'll ask the class questions, need 2 know those answers. READ AHEAD or FAIL!
Dr. Schweppe is an amazing professor. He's very clear, concise and straight forward. If I had to take OChem again, I would with Dr. Schweppe. He cares about his students and has a good sense of humor and creates a comfortable atmosphere during both lecture and lab. Study hard, take good notes and you will get an A.
Boring class, and you can not imagine how difficult for Exam ........
Chemistry in general is a tough subject. Don't expect to pass if you don't show up or take notes. Try to go to every office hours available. Every lab was based on the lectures so pay attention to them. I recommend him for someone who is familiar with chemistry.
Dr. Schweppe is a fantastic professor, has very detailed and helpful lectures. If you don't understand something, he will patently explain it to you in different ways which is super helpful. He is not a pushover, you have to follow all his rules if you want to avoid getting on his bad side, but his tests are straightforward and gives no hw!
Great professor, chill dude.
Dr. Schweppe is caring and easy going. His lectures are quick paced, but he'll gladly explain something if you don't understand. His tests are lengthy but, if you solve the recommended questions from the textbook and solve the worksheets that he gives you, then you'll find the exams to be a breeze. Don't slack off and participate in the class!
Very easy to understand, great explanations.
Go to lecture if you want a good grade. Homework is optional. With that said, if you want to get an A, do the homework. That's it. I barely touched my textbook except to work on practice problems. Got A for both semesters. Labs are laid back compared to Dr. P. Both are great Ochem professors. Just depends on your learning style.
Professor Schweppe has a great sense of humor. He blends down to earth silliness with high intelligence seamlessly. His lectures are heavy so it's best that you are in class taking notes when he teaches, but he makes them fun. Tests are not for the faint of heart, but if you give a good solid try he'll see your efforts. He's tough but worth it.
Took him back in Fall 2016 and at first it didn't seem like I was going to like him. His teaching is great, understandable, and gives great previews of Gen Chem topics. Make sure to pay attention to his lectures as his tests can be difficult. He may seem like he doesn't care about his students, but he cares about them, and wants you to succeed.
Schweppe is an awesome chem professor. He know his stuff and thanks to him I came well prepared for Chem 1a, which I'm taking now with him. I recommend him because you learn a lot.
Schweppe is super strict, gives a bunch of work, and expects everything to be done exactly on time. If you take the 1A hybrid class, expect to do almost all your studying online and get brief short explanations from him. His email responses are short and barely explain your question, so if he does not go over it in class you will need to self-study
he is not a good teacher and makes us take tests on Friday nights ( from 6 to 8:30)
He's an okay teacher. Take notes and make sure you do the practice problems and read the textbook to help you prepare for the test. Do this and you'll be fine.
In short, he makes me HATE chemistry. He teaches very quickly and barely to understand anything from him. the course is 90 % depending on self-study. he makes me hate Tuesday and Thursday because of his lectures. he asks us to write copy the mechanism of experiments (wasting of time). Do not try to take any courses with him.
Chemistry is a TOUGH subject, but Dr. Schweppe makes it as easy as possible. The people who rated him poorly are just plain lazy. This class requires you to put in the effort. Read the chapters, do the optional book homework, take good notes in class, and review your work. He doesnt want you to just pass, he wants you to learn. Great professor!
Dr. Schweppe, is one of the best teachers for Chem 1A! This class takes a lot of time, if your not up for a big chunk of time to study, don't take this class! For me, I studied 5 hours Tuesday/Thursday, 3 hours on Monday and at least 8 hours on the weekend. So expect a lot of work!! He really cares about you as a student, and wants you to do well.
Dr. Schweppe, is one of the best teachers for Chem 1A! This class takes a lot of time! For me, I studied 5 hours Tuesday/Thursday, 3 hours on Monday and at least 8 hours on the weekend. So expect a lot of work!! He really cares about you on a personal level and wants you to do well.
Dr. Schweppe is a good teacher. The subject itself is hard but he does his best to explain it clearly. Office hours are really helpful. Don't use a phone in class, he gets really picky about that. Tests are cumulative. Besides that, he is pretty charming and hot. He has a sense of humor which also makes the class going.
He is really interesting and keeps you engaged in class. Chemistry is hard, but he explains almost everything really well and gives many examples in class. The homework is alright, a lot of work and very important. The exams are really similar to the work sessions that he gives. Take the honor section, it's only a little more work than the regular
This is by far the worst and most horrible professor that I have ever taken. Seriously don't take this professor unless you want to ruin your life and fail. His tests are horribly hard, and he is the worst at grading. He kept telling me that I was going to do well and that I would pass; however, he ended up giving me a D in the class.
Want to learn Chemistry? Then take his class. He actually teaches his materials and does so well. He also supplements it with his video lectures. His exams are practically straight out from his worksheets and labs. He will not curve just to make his class avg look good. Not an easy class. But getting an A is doable with honest amounts of effort.
He wants his students to succeed and he really goes out of his way to make sure his students can pass! His lectures are easy to follow and he teaches in a way that students can understand. He gives out work sessions to complete each week and if you focus on those for the semester and follow the recommended hw problems you'll be fine.
Getting an A is not impossible, but you reeeeeeally have to work for it. Tests and quizzes are tough. Schweppe's an alright guy, his lectures are really fast paced so be sure to stop him and ask questions whenever he goes a bit too fast. Be on top of all your work sessions and labs, do everything in a timely manner, read the book. Yup.
Honestly, this is one of the best teachers at Mission College. I took him in Fall 2016. He's a pretty funny guy and you can tell he likes what he's teaching. He's good at explaining things well. Make sure to go over work sessions and the textbook thoroughly b4 exams and labs b4 the lab quiz and you'll do fine. Tests are fair I got 100 on final easy
This class was not too difficult: Take good notes during lectures, go over work sessions and lab reports before the tests and do the optional homework problems he assigns and you should be fine. Although he is willing to help if you have questions most of the time, if you get on his bad side he can be quite intimidating. NO PHONES IN CLASS.
I really wanted to like this professor. It's remarkable how much he knows, so much he doesn't even have notes prepared beforehand. He goes off by what he knows and solves side by side with students. It's hard to approach him with questions, though. Use office hours to your advantage, and overcommunicate for help from him.
Dr. Schweppe's class is a breeze , only if you put in effort. His lectures are amazing so if you actually want to LEARN-- take him, if not take Baker. Just take notes in lectures, read txtbk, and complete recommended txtbk q's. For exams, review work sessions, lecture notes, and labs, and you have yourself an A.
Hes a very good instructor. His lectures make the most complicated things clear and very easy to understand. There is a lot of work in this class (work session, pre labs, post labs) that have to be submitted on time almost each week/class. Overall, its a heavy work load Class but the professor makes it easier.
Super confusing, and not really organized. Took the class as a summer class which is understandably quick, but he expects too much of students. After assignments/exams, the grading was tough and felt unfair.
Idk why everyone gave him a good review before. Hes the most disorganized person Ive ever met and he doesnt care for students whatsoever. His grading is extremely tough and I dont recommend you take him at all for the summer. Its bad enough to be in a pandemic but his bad behavior is no excuse for it.
This class is really difficult. Never taking him in the summer again. If youre not ready to spend 20-30 hours a week minimum dont take him
Do not take this class online nor asynchronously during the summer. He doesn't record 1/2 of what he lectures and still requires you to know every single thing he ever said. If you skipped a lecture, prepare to get a C or lower on your exam, with almost nothing else counts towards your grade except exams. His grading is inconsistent at best. AVOID!
If you value your time and mental health, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Online chem is hard enough as it is, but this class just takes it to a new level. 35+ hours of work a week, 3 exams 1 final that make or breaks your grade, exams consist of 3-4 chapters with numerous topics that may or may not be discussed in lectures.
Dr. Schweppe is very hard but he truly cares about his students. It can be frustrating at times because he has a PHD so OF COURSE he gets the material but you have to remind him you are a student and not his peer. He wants you to pass but you have to work hard for it. Show mastery as the semester progresses and you'll be fine.
He literally doesnt do anything to help students. I would have so many breakdowns because of how much he stressed me out.
The worst teacher I have ever taken my entire life. Very disorganized and rude to students. His online lectures are long and boring. His tests are all short-answers and extremely long. You will not have enough time to get through everything. He always brags about how smart he is which is a joke. Avoid at all costs!
I wouldn't say James is a horrible professor at all, he just was not a great professor for my learning style. He is very clear on what he expects but he does not slow the class down for anyone falling behind and expects to know most of the lecture prior to scheduled classes. He is very knowledgeable on the subject but he is a hard grader and strict
He's okay. He's just very disorganized. At the beginning of the class we had shorter lectures but lots more homework in between which I liked but then the exam average was not the best so then he made lectures a lot longer which killed me but that led to less homework. Only complaint is that lectures are not recorded so if you miss class, good luck
OrganicChemistryTutor on Youtube will be a godsend for this class if you don't understand his lectures. Would sometimes answer questions taking 5 minutes long. Grades labs and homework on correctness. Very rare extra credit. Would take a day to respond to emails. Be diligent on lab and hw (try to get 100% on them) to help on tests.
He's lazy and doesn't want to go out of his way to provide more for his students. You want to study for an exam? Go redo questions from the homework. If you got a question wrong he'll tell you "we did this in class". But how are we supposed to know exactly what we did wrong when he doesn't record his lectures and might made our notes too vague?
If you want to learn chemistry take his class. He is smart and knowledgeable, his lecture is very informative. Listen to his lecture, do the homework, practice the old tests and you will get an A. Ask for help if you're in trouble, he is super helpful and replies to email quickly.
If you are a chem major, definitely take him, he is a little intimidating but will make you love chemistry. His lectures are fascinating and he explains concepts beautifully. The tests are hard, so to do well make sure you complete work sessions as well as his recommended homework questions.
If you are online, don't take him. Just don't. Take my word and apply with another teacher. You will not enjoy being in his class.
He is the absolute worst option to take if you're trying to get ahead by taking chem in the summer. Especially online because he doesn't record lectures. Even then his lectures are ramblings with no finesse. Disorganized with no real class structure. The thing is though is he's a very nice and brilliant person, but the worst prof I've ever seen.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. If you skip lecture, you're screwed. If you even miss a bullet point, he will make sure that it's gonna be on the test. He's a VERY test heavy class and you will NOT pass if you do not study every single note that you have taken in that class.
Dr. Schweppe does his best to explain difficult concepts in chemistry. Personally, I found the lectures and subject material to be interesting most of the time but sometimes it got boring. The only thing about him is he almost never arrives to class on time and he's kind of disorganized. But other than that, he does a great job teaching chemistry.
He's a friendly person but I am not needing a friendly teacher, a teacher that doesnt take off points for the smallest mistakes would be nice. I had him for lab so it was tolerable. If youre not good at chemistry, take it from me -- do NOT take this class.
Schweppe's lectures are hard to follow, so I taught myself basically everything in this class. Midterms are hard but are similar to work sessions/recommended HW problems. Your grade is basically determined by how well you do on the tests, so make sure you study well for those. Hard class, but you leave with a strong understanding of the content.
Do not take this class very tough, he gives tons of work. Quizzes are every week on worksheets and sometimes the quiz is nothing about the work sheet. Does not help you prepare for tests at all not even a study guide or told what specifically to study. Have to remember a ton of things for a test because notes or nothing is allowed just your brain.
Overall a terrible class, very difficult. You are given quizzes weekly on handouts and the quizzes can be nothing about the handout. Does not prepare you well for a test at all no study guide or clear instruction on what to study. You can not use nothing on the test and expect you to remember a ton of info. Does not teach about topics well.
Doesn't post any notes and won't let you take pictures of notes during lecture, lots of handouts and a lot of stuff due every class meeting. Goes through material very quickly and doesn't explain very well.
He is an amazing explainer, a really nice guy. You will pass if you focus in his class. I barely studied for tests and still got As. he doesn't grade tests on correctness, just how well he sees you know the material (I've gotten points from correct work). If you get an A in his class, you don't get a final, just a test on the last chapters.
The professor is disorganized; there are no clear study guides or clear test preps other than ungraded hw. Grades are not posted on canvas.Overall a chaotic class, if you have taken AP chem then this is ok. Prior knowledge to chem is mandatory due to the poor teaching styls.Had to withdraw from the course. Better off taking a different teacher.
I've read some comments prior, but don't let that scare you into taking his class. Chemistry is a challenging course where you need to set a time to study. He records lectures online in case I need to go back and review them. His exam outlines give an overall view of what the test is on, but he emphasizes the main ones in class. Great teacher
The professor to be disorganized and chaotic in their teaching style, with no clear outline or structure for the class. The lectures were not engaging and its difficult to understand and retain the material covered in class. I recommend to choose a different professor if you want to learn chemistry properly.
Dr. Schweppe is a really caring instructor. I needed a lot of help in this class and he was so caring and helped me so much that not every professor would help as much. I really appreciate all his support. His lectures are long, so I would recommend reviewing the topic beforhand so that it is easy to follow the lecture.
Lecture heavy class but good prof. If you're ever lost you just have to ask him for help and he explains things very well. I barely touched the textbook all semester and went into the course with no prior chemistry knowledge and found it to be quite an easy class. You have to be ready to put effort in to pass, not a class you can just breeze by in.
He is an ok professor.I only passed the class because I genuinely like chemistry, not because of his help. He's unorganized. He'll come to class late constantly but then take points off of students for coming to class 1 or 2 minutes late.He doesn't help everyone.I literally saw a classmate crying outside the classroom because prof wouldn't help him.
Giving this guy one star is a joke he deserves zero.
very passive agressive with students. pls avoid
doenst rlly care about students. doenst provide extra credit and marks u off for small stuff
iv honestly had a rlly bad experience with. i would definitely try to take another professor if you can!!
try to avoid. if you wana pass this class then i would highly suggest taking it with another professor
Dr. Schweppe is a very good instructor who cares a lot about his students. If you ever need help you can go to his office hours and even though my class was fully offline, he posted lecture videos that helped tremendously if you didn't understand something in class. Though he's a tough grader, it's clear he just wants his students to learn! :)
Awful expereince, does not break down concepts well. Will be retaking at DeAnza. Avoid avoid avoid
Don't listen to the 1 star reviews he's a good professor, the class is mostly a lecture where he goes through the worksheets for each chapter. The tests aren't really that difficult and he even allowed corrections for the first one. The lectures are pretty long and can get boring, but he gives a 30 minute break. Labs are super fun though!
I liked his class. Just expect to review worksheets to prepare for the exams. He literally lays out what he wants from you, so as long as you do what he says you'll be fine.
