Wonderful guy! Wish all my instructors were this interesting, prepared for class and clear. Good sense of humor. He's made a complicated topic come alive - treat yourself, you'll be glad you did.
His class consist of either sitting in a group for an hour or listening to him talk. 2 exams, 5 questions, 50 % of your grade. For a 200 level class he makes it feel like a graduate level. oh and miss 3 classes, 3 pts for each class you miss after that. Dont take it if you dont need it!
I would not recommend ANYONE to take his class unless it is a MUST.There are a lot of readings to do in the class and some of them are unclear he seems that he tries to make them understandable but he actually makes it worse, dont get me wrong it's not a hard class, he should make it more intersting
only 2 exams..5 questions each..not that bad..he curves..alot of reading..but interesting..i have learned alot..i enjoy this class..:):) hes very smart
Funny teacher, although the term "slippery slope" comes up WAY too often. Really gets you to think about things, and look at them from different points of view.
All this class is is a bunch of reading. It's a pretty simple class. He loves class discussions and calls on people all the time to check if they are prepared. He can sometimes be confusing, but i guess all philosophers are. He's a really nice guy and tries to make things easier for the students
Incredibly easy and fun. You never once have to open the book, except maybe for the exams, which are only 5 questions and don't know anyone who failed them. The debates in the class are a lot of fun and even though it's amazingly easy, you learn a lot.
I really enjoyed Dr. Scow... he is not trying to fail you... the class does involve a lot of reading (a whole lot) but go to class and pay attention and you will most likely be fine...
Assign on average 30 pages of reading by the next class meeting, another 25-28 pages from another book. It's a waste of time and he doesn't know how to teach, not an understanding teacher. He's full of it. DON'T TAKE IT IF YOU DON'T NEED IT!
he assigns a lot of reading but he explains it so well in class you don't really have to read, just go to class
Professor Scow is a great teacher! He's very helpful and really tries to accomodate the needs of his students. The material is pretty interesting... and he really helps to bring it alive!
The material is hard; however, Dr. Scow is very fair with his quizzes and explains things well in class. He provides online discussions and is quick to get back to you with any concerns.
Tough course, but Scow is very knowledgable on the subject. He is extremely willing to help you throughout the course, promptly answering email questions, setting aside numerous hours for help, as well as going over difficult assignments in class. Excellent professor, take him when you can!
Very interesting concepts and fun logic problems throughout the semester. If your a bit dull witted I wouldn't suggest you take the class because the material could be hard. Is time consuming however and for an older man he's kind of cute!
Very boring class if not a philosphy major. Hard material to understand, and Scow seems to find it beneath him to explain it clearly enough for everyone to understand the material.
If you do not have a lot of time to prepare for this class, do not take it. It is very demanding. Dr. Scow is very helpful and he makes it obvious that his goal is for you to understand the material. He is very passionate about Logic and tries to make a difficult topic as easy as possible. If you don't get his jokes, you're in the wrong class.
you gotta take my word seriously, you will not get an easy A unless you love to read philosophy book even when you are eating your meal. He is very clear about what he says in the class. However, he will trip you over..."BAD" on quizzes, and trip you over "worse" on the exam. 2 exam each 25% of grade, you mess one up, you are done. don take him
What a great teacher! He may seem a little dry at first but he is actually very funny. Just take your time on those quizzes. Attendance is mandatory, so show up it's 25%. The material is a little boring, but overall it's a great class, definitely not an easy A, but throws in a good amount of extra credit, so getting a B is cake. Take him.
Took in summer. Great teacher if u go 2 class. He loves 2 talk and u might get lost but do the readings! If u participate in class he loves u! Going 2 class can get u extra credit or perks which can get u a letter grade. At first it might seem hard but w/ some minimal wk it's do able. This was my first phil class n i really enjoyed it. Overall A.
Confusing quizzes, usually 5 questions. Miss one and there goes your A. MISS NO CLASS and he will throw LOTS of extra credit your way. Otherwise you will likely be screwed in the end. BORING lecture, so participate and be prepared to make it interesting. Prepare to argue back and forth through email over your quiz/exams to point grab.
A difficult class because of the subject matter, but Professor Scow is there all the way to clarify any problems. He takes attendance, but it isn't mandatory. However, if you do show every day, he won't mind giving you a boost at the end if you need it. He responded very well to the class, and adjusted the required assignments accordingly.Grade: A
Professor Scow is my favorite professor in the whole entire world. His class changed my life. He helps you think for yourself and is always willing to entertain any crazy ideas or thoughts. I wish he taught 100 classes so I could take them all!
this guy was awesome! i loved his sense of humor. there were many true/false online quizzes, and final was online and true/false. for future reference the answers are almost always TRUE. i got an A because of an unnatural amount of extra credit. i highly recommend.
Scow is a genius and he's hilarious in a really specific way. The only thing is that the problems just click in his mind and he may not know that he's going too fast. It's really easy to get lost.
There is a lot of reading that's kinda hard to understand if you're not a philosophy person. The teacher is nice, but the weekly quizzes aren't easy. Mid-term and Final are multiple choice too. Attend class to be able to complete extra credit quizzes and get extra credit in the end. Really nice man, but pointless class. I didn't learn anything.
He gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit(if you come to class.)I didn't follow the text very well.He had an oral quiz at one point. very embarrassing! The final and midterm were online. the midterm was only 4 questions. I got an A because of all the extra credit. I really never understood the material though.
Really funny guy and INCREDIBLY intelligent. Makes it very easy to get an A -- even with the extremely difficult material he has to transmit.
Dr. Scow is a great teacher. Make sure you come to class it is 25% of your grade. Read the material make sure you understand it you will lose P&P grade if you dont know the answers. Quizzes and tests are only 4 questtions so take your time. Take him he is great.
Scow is goofy and awkwardly funny during class. Although the material is thick and somewhat difficult to comprehend, quizzes and tests are online, open-book, and only 4 t/f questions. Definitely take this class to get an easy grade.
BEST PROFESSOR AT VCU <PERIOD>. If you attend class and listen and participate, the online quizes, which are 4 t/f question online, will be REALLY EASY. I got a 4/4 on my midterm and final.. quizes and test are extremely easy, he will let you get a question right if you argue back and forth about a question you missed.
The class gets pretty confusing. I went the whole class without the textbook, and ending up with a B. Though if you're not using the textbook, you NEED to attend class to at least have the participation grade keep you up. and it's really helpful to pay attention. His quizzes/midterm/final are 4 questions T/F.. not too bad. Scow's not bad. Got
Do not let Scow fool you. In the beginning everything sounds great, but I assure you it is quite hard to get an A. I'm a deans list student got all As and Bs on my quizzes each week, but got a D on the midterm and final even though I went every class, read every selection, and took my own notes! Find another professor.
The material for this class was HARD!!!! But the professor is patient and totally willing to take as much time as necessary to make sure that you understand what is going on. Make sure you always attend class and ALWAYS do your homework and you should do fine. I highly reccomend this professor for anyone that ABSOLUTELY has to take logic.
Logic is a difficult class. Scow did his PhD work in logic and clearly understands it. So many times everyone in class was completely lost, and Scow would still go on and on with a problem, funny sort of. He goes over problems on end every class to help you understand, and is patient. Tests are REDICULOUS! homework, class,STUDY! = A
Scow is awesome, and completely adorable. You may not get an A if you're in logic, but that's just because the material is hard, it's not because he's being unfair or anything. Sometimes I got lost trying to follow him, he moves a little fast, but he clearly enjoys the subject which is a nice quality in a teacher.
He's so endearing it doesn't matter how lost you feel in the class. You know somehow it will work out.
He gives a 4 question T/F quiz every week thats online. His wording is very tricky so read carefully. He offers alot of extra-credit but you only qualify if you attend almost EVERY class. Hard material but you can get a good grade without even knowing it. Writing intensive class, but hardly any writing what so ever.
GO TO CLASSSSSSSSSSSSS. PERIOD POINT BLANK SIMPLE.. I NEVER RATE PROFESSORS BUT HE WAS A TRICKY ONE. his questions are tricky so make sure you go to class and understand everything...extra credit is offered if u dont miss any classes..
Really seems to enjoy teaching! Logic is a hard subject to understand, but be patient, it should click...and once it clicks it's so fun! He repeats what you need to understand, so don't worry. I got a C on the midterm and a A on the final, but got an A overall. Btw, if you have a solid appreciation of math, take this class!
Prof. Scow is a very bright philosopher! ATTENDANCE IS VERY MANDATORY. he is very precise about going to class every class or at least only missing 2 days because it is a large part of the grade and you will not be eligible for extra credit if you do not have a good attendance grade. There is a lot of reading but can definitely get an A!
One of the top 3 hardest courses I've ever had and top 3 most unreasonable professors. I had a doctors note and he still didnt excuse me from class and I had to beg to have him let me turn in the hw due those days. He's very unclear, hes just not a good professor, but he is the only one who teaches logic. I think hes also incapable of feeling love.
I loved this class!! Alot of reading, pay attention and come to class. Lots of extra credit if you have 3.6 attendance. 4 question T/F test every week. Final 4 questions too. 3/4= B 2/4= C etc. No papers to write!!! not condescending either. Wants you to learn the material. Interesting topics toward end of semester
His class is tough, but he makes so many jokes it's worth it!!!! Plus he's kind of a looker too, which makes going into class that much easier ;d
James Scow does a good job teaching the difficult subject of logic. You need to come to every class, attendance is 25% of your grade. If you miss roll call then you only get 1/2 a point for attendance. his midterms are timed and difficult. the material is hard to grasp, make sure you have study groups and go to tutoring. You can re-do homework.
Class is very overwhelming and confusing when you first start. Being there to take notes is a must. He takes attendance EVERY class and calls on you for participation points. The tests are T/F, but are very hard, the papers are pretty easy, but if you dont do EXACTLY as he asks he will not read it and give you a C.
dude if your not a major DONT EVEN BOTHER!! this dude makes the things harder than ever ad wont clarify basically makes it sem lik its your only class and he is the only on that matter. He knows his stuff will bring up good arguements but he still counts tardyness and takes off for it....... yeah he is that guy
Just show up to every class and type your notes. Attendance is mandatory and he allows an extra credit test at the end of the course if you have good attendance. Tests are all T/F but they're tricky. Ask questions when it comes to what he wants for the essays, he's helpful. I'd recommend him!
Logic is hard to understand. He gets caught up in his own head so ASK QUESTIONS.Go to EVERY class & you WILL get a significantly better grade. You can also re-do hw infinitely, and all grades are based on your classmates highest scores. I didn't re-do hw but went to every class, hardly understood and still got a B. Quite a quirky guy.
Scow makes this class so much harder and less interesting than it should be. Goes through the material too quickly and is vague when explaining, though he is very particular about grading. He asks the class subjective questions and expects you to answer a certain way (preferably the way he sees things). Wish I took this with a different prof.
at first this class seemed overwhelming with the intense reading & tricky quiz questions, but the key is to PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS (i know it gets boring). take notes + a solid effort = no reason you cant get at least a B. (if you have difficulties getting to class and making it ON TIME though, this will hurt your grade)
Do not take this course online. AWFUL. it is so inconsistent. The course outline on blackboard literally changes every week and it is SO hard to follow. All tests and quizzes are about 4 questions and they are true/false. Good luck on those.
I was not excited at all about taking philosophy and Scow made it even worse. He goes through the material very fast and is not very helpful. The weekly quizzes are true/false and the statements contradict themselves making them very confusing and difficult. I do not recommend Scow at all for anyone taking Phil201 to fulfill a requirement.
This was the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. He doesn't care about you or your grade, so don't expect anything easy. He is knowledgeable about his subject but he has no idea what he is doing as a teacher. I'm not even sure how he is where he is. Course will change every other week, so good luck figuring it out. You'll need it.
Scow is admittedly a quirky man, however if your desire to learn is there, no matter how hard it gets, he will do his absolute best to ensure you get the grade you deserve/want. He's too intelligent for words & can get lost in his work, but he is the nicest man & will do whatever it takes to help you follow along. Cannot say enough good about him.
He is very unhelpful. When you ask for help he will treat you as if you know nothing and usually has a rude/sarcastic response to questions you may have about his unclear assignments. His class structure is also more complicated than it needs to be. The lecture can be interesting, but he is never clear on whats actually important and whats a rant.
One of the hardest grading teacher ever. If you want an A, take Anatomy instead. DO NOT recommend
If you can look past the weekly quizzes, mandatory attendance, papers that he's ridiculously critical on, & midterm essay questions that are two paragraphs each question, he's a nice man. He'll re-open old quizzes that you didn't do so well on for revisions (you're allowed a revision on basically everything). Just A LOT of work for an elective.
Professor Scow is a nice guy. I enjoy him as a person, but PHIL is not one of my strong-suits, and if it is not one of yours, you will most likely be lost for 50% of the time. He does give you many opportunities to revise your work and get the best grade you can possibly get in the class, and he does give good feedback on essays.
He's a funny guy with some pretty funny analogies but his classes feel so long and he's so boring. He speaks and monotone and is very indecisive . He will give you an assignment and chance the criteria maybe 2 times before the assignment is due. There's quizzes every week on the reading material, and there all TF.
Gives you a lot of chances to revise your work. If you get the revision wrong, you get to revise you revision until you get the point up until the due date of the revisions. Everything's graded on a 4.0 scale so a 24 on a quiz is a C, not a 50%.
After immediately realizing that I was out of my element in this course, I really gave it my all to try to get a good grade and be open minded. Dr. Scow is condescending in his emails, negative in his test feedback, and not interesting to listen to. Even when trying to take notes, it is difficult to tell what is a rant and what is important.
This is literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life! All quizzes and midterm are T/F and extremely difficult. He's rude in emails and will basically call you stupid for not understanding the material. I DO NOT recommend this teacher to anyone!!!!
I found him to be difficult at first, his lectures are sometimes long but after the first few weeks he'd end class between 10 to 15 minutes early. While it might be difficult to catch everything he says in class he records his lectures and posts them on blackboard. Highlighting the textbook to match the one he shows on the projector helped me pass
Honestly, you HAVE TO DO THE READINGS, and even at that it feels like he doesn't want you do get 100% on the quizzes or midterms...............
He does assign a lot of reading straight from the textbook, but the textbook is very confusing. I found looking up notes and synopses about the readings helped me out, but sometimes what I found online would give me the wrong answers so beware. The way he grades things benefits you in the end because he basically bumps everything up.
The amount of material he assigns to read each week is so much that I almost don't have time to do the homework for other classes, let alone study. If you're an engineering student slammed with loads of other coursework, don't take this guy. Also, he calls out roll every class. And he requires the latest edition of the textbook.
Philosophy teacher, so of course very sarcastic and vague when giving feedback. Answers questions about grades in a rude way, pretty much if you don't think like him you are wrong. However, gives revision opportunities to improve quiz and test and paper grades.
Lives in Lynchburg but teaches at Sweet Briar and VCU. I took him at SB. Very lecture-y and stiff, but really warmed up as the semester went on. He assigns A LOT of reading for philo class, but is very passionate and will bend over backwards to work with you He let me Skype into class when I was snowed in Attendance is mandatory but can be made up.
I work really hard in his class and he does not care. I received a 0 on my paper for not numbering the paragraphs, low quiz grades because he wants too specific of answers with not enough time to revise, and also it took 8 hours in order to pass his midterm by barely making it. This is a hard professor no matter how dedicated you are.
His comments on papers are sarcastic, his lectures are difficult to follow, and because getting passing credit is hard to do, get ready for revision after revision of tests, quizzes, papers, etc. If you have to leave class early, he calls you out. Studying doesn't seem to help, and his idea of 'the basics' is meta and tests seem subjective.
Disappointingly dry and miserable lecture.
Hardest class I've ever taken. By far way more work than expected for a PHIL class. I feel like I'm taking a grad school course with the type of language he uses, but with that being said, you can tell he is passionate. I took it online, which made things even harder, but he always replied to my emails and helped me out when he could.
He practically lives and breathes philosophy which is great for anyone who also loves PHIL. But if you are looking for an easy A he is NOT for you. Dry lectures, tough quizzes, taking notes is hard, and the readings are long and difficult to interpret. He's a tough grader that gives vague and sarcastic feedback making revisions a constant chore.
Most frustrating class to take with this teacher. He is well education and passionate for Philosophy don't get me wrong. But the lecture is dry like the desert, and unless you are already a Philosophy nut, reaching his standards is impossible. You will go insane trying to reach them. Pick another class or another teacher. Do it.
Boring. Spends every class just reading the material from the textbook to the class. He does record his lectures and posts them online which can be helpful if you manage to stay awake during them. The quizes and tests have the hardest true false questions I've ever seen in my life, and although that may sound silly I assure it is not.
The absolute worst professor I have eve had at VCU, and I've had some pretty bad ones. The class should under no circumstances be as hard as he makes it. He gives 2 question quizzes and 8 question exams.. all true or false. I read an answer word for word from a reading and somehow got it wrong on the quiz? He makes this class impossible DON'T TAKE!
Lots, lots of reading. Love the subject of philosophy but I really disliked the class setup. Very monotonous voice, also can be somewhat rude.
Not the worst class but also unnecessarily complex and rigorous for the level. The grading system was addressed at the beginning of the semester and is very simple. You can easily get C's and low B's on the tests and papers if you do all the busy work like the weekly writing, attending class, and the paper making steps.
Just here to defend Scow. Lots of people are harping on the dense lectures and many readings, it's philosophy, do you like complaining about lots of math in your calculus class? He makes it easy: highlights most important parts of the text, responsive to emails and gives you chances to revise homework and quizzes.
This class is too way too much work! Discussion forums (up to 6 at a time), 450 word assignment, journal, a quiz, and readings due every week. He gives me vague feedback and doesn't help when I clearly don't understand the criteria. He also takes off points for things that weren't on the grading requirements. Much more but not enough room.. AVOID
He once gave me a -0 out of 63 points on a full page essay because I forgot to include a prompt, instead of asking me to revise that one little thing. Terrible guy, terrible class, not worth it, take another class. Should get an easy A, but will probably be receiving a C.
One of the greats. Lots of people ignore the prerequisites for some reason, taking higher level classes, and Scow'll let em. They usually regret it. Higher level courses are more fun. T&f tests, very challenging, but if you understand the material, you will pass.
Scow is wonderful - he really kills himself to make sure his students have the chance to do well. He allows revisions on most assignments, so the students complaining about how "unfair" he is are probably just lazy, or take him being concise as him being mean. It's a lot of content, but Scow is brilliant!
Scow is literally so chill and laid back, I mean the class itself is hard to understand but he gives out multiple chances to get back points and is super generous with tests and quizzes. Attendance is semi-mandatory but you can always just do the restoration if you miss class (but its kinda like a short essay so its easier just to show up).
I took the class online, and yes the workload every week was a bit strenuous. However, if you put in the effort, you will pass. He really gives a huge safety net so students can still do well in the course. So dont be stressed if you dont do well on an assignment, he gives so many chances to make up lost points. I would take him again!
I honestly feel like he's a pretty good guy, and not a bad professor per se; I did learn quite a bit and the class is fair if a little tedious (there's a lot of work, but he's really, really lenient with grading). The one thing I can't get over is that his lectures are really... bad... like, rambling, boring, etc. Make sure to do the readings.
Him and the class is very confusing and uninteresting. He notices class doesn't understand what is going on but continues to lecture and teach in the same format. He can be slightly funny.
Dr. Scow gives entirely too much work for what should be a fairly easy class. He requires so much to be done outside of lecture, and his lectures are extremely boring. He's a pretty nice guy and fairly lenient on grading, but his quiz and test questions albeit online, are extremely hard!
There is a lot of reading each week (9hours). However, he highlights the important bits and Goes over it in class, lectures are very dry and confusing. attendance is required can be made up 4 times though. there's assignments due everyday but they're short and he allows revisions on ALL work including the midterm and final, can get an A if you try
Scow is pretty good. There's no textbook, but a LOT of reading material. He's really good at explaining things in lecture though. He records his lectures and posts them on blackboard, but it is NOT a good idea to skip. you'll make it harder for yourself. lots of extra credit opportunities. he really wants you to be successful.
Professor Scow is an amazing professor. His lectures are very interesting and he's a funny man. He gives a lot of lee-way in his class and also gives extra credit. You have a midterm, a final, and online quizzes that are due on Fridays. Highly recommend taking this class with Professor Scow. There's no reason to not get an A!!
Tons of "busy work" as he calls it, plus 9+ hours of reading per week (also his words). He seems to know when class is confused, but doesn't really seem to care. He gives so many assignments that you don't receive feedback before the next assignment is due, and feedback is often flippant and/or contradicts prior feedback. Worst class I've taken.
Prof Scow is a really sweet man, but he teaches way over the heads of kids taking this class as a requirement who know nothing about philosophy. Thankfully he started giving us As for the homework if we showed up to class or else I would have failed this class. SOOO much reading (he suggests 9 hours) and his lectures make zero sense.
Professor Scow is great. I have taken classes in person and online. Yes, there is a TON of tough reading and you have to participate. Grading is fair but lenient. If you get a bad grade he tells you what you did and tells you how to fix it. Then he allows you to resubmit for full credit. If you do it right the first time, you get extra credit.
The material is kind of heavy and sometimes difficult to understand if youre not super into philosophy. He grades for attendance, but if youre not there you can look at his recorded lecture and upload your notes for credit. Be aware though, most of the time he'll exempt you from doing the prompt for that day too if you went to class.
If you do the work you will do fine and he will make sure to help you. If you don't work then you are not going to do well. Lots of reading from Greek texts and other higher level sources. He highlights the important parts so you don't need to read the entire thing.
The reading is heavy but he gives out SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT! Over half of the class was exempt from all exams since we all had over 100s, simply because he gave us extra credit on everything. Not only were we exempt from the exams but he gives you full credit for them. Overall, he's extremely nice if you email or speak to him.
This was a very interesting class. The readings were from Greek and Roman philosophers and the homework was discussion board based. Definitely read with an open mind and write your reflections with an open mind. He was an easy grader and gave extra credit where it was deserved.
Honestly not that great of a prof but I'm an engineering major, what do I know.He gives out so much extra credit if you just do the basic work (this in turn makes you exempt from the major assignments).I feel like it was the right way to run an introductory course. You don't have to do all the reading. He gives PPTs + audio lectures. Take if u must
He teaches and structures the class like he's talking to philosophers and not students, which makes it really hard. He understands how difficult he makes the class though, and gives LOTS of EC. Because of the amount and difficulty of the readings it's really intimidating. My #1 tip is USE THE POWERPOINTS. They're a lot clearer than the readings.
He doesn't follow lecture plans for classes and will joke about it. He will also laugh about how he doesn't know what he wants from students on assignments. His lectures are completely unstructured and mostly filled with irrelevant information. If you have less than an A at test times, he will give tests he wants you to fail.
Hard to follow at times, but very willing to answer questions. He offers revisions on quizzes, extra credit, and even exam exemptions if you show up to class and do the work on time. Would absolutely take again.
He was amazing as teaching and understanding his class was easy aswell as fun
He is extremely rude to students when he's in a bad mood. Even when he's in a good mood, his lectures don't make any sense, and he refuses to engage with students' valid questions. He has admitted multiple times that he doesn't care about his classes. Avoid Scow at all costs!
Genuinely one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Dr. Scow is a philosophy encyclopedia, and I'm deeply saddened I won't have any more classes with him. Attendance is crucial, and if you attend enough, he will award you with exam exemptions. Assignments are not too hard, but there are a lot of them.
