Professor Scythes is a fantastic teacher. He tells you what you need to know and what exactly will be on the test. He pretty much hands the test to you before you take it. I highly recommend him. Class can be a little boring but it's easy !

I absolutely hate history and I actually didn't mind his class. It's the only history class in my whole life I haven't fallen asleep in.

He is the most helpful and one of the best professors that i have encountered. He actually cares about students and that is a hell of a lot more than i can say about a lot of other professors.

You have to do a lot of reading and note taking, and be VERY specific on his tests! Half of your test is the essay. His quizzes are easy and make sure to know the map of the USA, as it is on all quizzes and tests. Great story teller, makes it interesting

I took his class over the summer- he told some strange stories that freaked me out a little- but i pulled off a decent grade and i am awful at history - he's a cool guy.

Prof Sycthes is an awesome professor. I had no interest in this course, and it ended up being my favorite course this semester. He makes history easy and interesting. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the exams, so you really have no excuse for doing poorly. They're easy if you study.

Best history class I've ever had... he used to be an english teacher, and hates grading papers... so he doesn't assign them. he also makes history surprisingly INTERESTING (said by a math major). if you need to knock out a gen ed, take him.

I wish he taught higher history classes. By far the best teacher I've had in a long time. Tests are essay and identification and map. he gives you the essay topics and id's a week beforehand and allows you to email him your outline and id's so there is no way you can do bad on the tests. Oh and bring him coffee...

Gives You Essays 2 weeks ahead of test. Also gives you very clear review sheets making tests very easy. Is fun in class, and brings a sense of humor to the table

I took this course with another prof freshman year and withdrew. Glad I did. Scythes is one of the nicest professors on campus. He teaches history like a decent story and he's not boring. Tests are only a map, identifications and an essay. Don't fret, he virtually gives you the test 10 days in advance, you can memorize your answers. An easy A.

One of the best professor's ive had ever. He is funny, clear, helpful, and knows his stuff. He gives you the essays that will be on the test about a week before hand, and the tests are 90% multiple choice. If you have the opportunity to take him for history and you dont, you are an idiot. Heed my words, TAKE HIM!

I hated history before I came to this class. The class is so interesting and the lessons stay with you. He is a very funny man who cares about history and his students. One of my favorite teachers I have ever taken. Highly recommended. =]

This professor is amazing, I love him. His class consists of him talking and you listening while taking notes. He makes it so interesting and its like he's just telling a story the whole time. I promise that anyone will love him and be interested in the class, he's probably one of the best professors at West Chester.

Good teacher. His main concentration is on the Civil War. He knows every inch of the Gettysburg battle field he's been there atleast 70 times. To me his test were kind of hard. "The fill in the map" part of the test is stupid to me.Overall he's a good teacher. I've taken pretty much all the classes he teaches at West Chester and Neumann College.

I think he was an awsome prof.!! He gets into what he teaches which makes for a great history lesson. he gives a lot of notes, but he tells u mostly whats important to study. If u study u should get a good grade.

Absolutely amazing professor. Always very helpful, I had to take about 1/4 of the semester off for health reasons, and he was always very helpful and understanding. His classes are also very fun. Definitely take a class with him.

I had Scythes for Western Civ. 1 and he really made it interesting, and told a lot of jokes. You hardly ever have to read anything from the book and he keeps class fun. Tests are just 1 essay and 20 multiple choice, not too hard. Just go to class and take good notes, which is easy. It was the only class I didn't mind going to! Take him!

hated history before this but after him its not so bad. couple tests like every 3 or 4 chapters which he gives the essays ahead of time .. really easy quizzes cuz he tells you when you need to know something. i reread the chapters before the tests and did fine. and he's awkwardly funny so it makes the class all the more fun. definitely take him.

The tests werent easy but they werent hard. The map test for every exam is an easy 30 pts unless you dont know the geography of your own country. If thats the case, drop out and collect trash because you shouldnt be in college. Great instructor!!!

My second time through taking Scythes, and it's been fantastic. He has so many interesting and funny stories. Easy guy to relate to, makes the material easy. Be ready to take notes though. Tests are essay, map, and MC, and quizzes are MC and map. Study and you'll do fine.

Took 2 classes led by Professor Scythes, and wish I could take more. Great guy, and extremely knowledgeable of his field! Rarely uses his own notes and teaches as if hes telling a story. Funny guy, and easy to communicate with. One of the best college professors I've had to date.

Brilliant guy. He's very passionate about history and you can tell that through his lectures. His tests weren't extremely hard, but some were fairly difficult. Either a map or essay with each test. Very nice guy and also helpful. Overall, I learned a LOT in this class and I was much more interested than I ever thought I'd be.

INCREDIBLE! I hate history, but LOVED this class because of him. He makes it like story time and its actually pretty funny. Dont buy the book. He says you need it, but you really dont. Class is mandatory and TAKE NOTES!!! All test and quiz questions come from what he talks about in class but theyre overall really easy. TAKE HIM!

Great prof! Book not needed, tests are fairly simple. Take good notes in class, show up to class and you shouldn't have a problem. There is a map on every test/ they are usually the quizzes but are also simple. He's a really sweet guy and will help you if you need it. Take him!!

The class itself is pretty much self explanatory. Quizzes are as many points as tests though which almost makes them harder because there's usually less than 10 multiple choice questions. Maps on every test-really easy. Definitely reocmmend!!! He's super nice and really loves this subject

Professor Scythes is a great professor he focuses a lot on military history, which can be boring, but he makes it so interesting. His classes are straight lecture but very engaging. I hate history & he has made me fall in love with it. If you're not a fan of American history TAKE THIS. Attendance counts, but he understands that life happens. We have 4 quizzes and 4 exams. They include multiple choice, a map, and an essay- he gives you the topic before hand. 2 books are "mandatory" but you only need the small document book, $35

Dr. S is great! He teaches the class knowing that it's mainly freshman and knows that a lot of people are taking it 'because they have to'. With that in mind, he makes the class very engaging and encourages participation. You don't have to participate, but you will get the most out of class if you do. Will learn a lot. Definitely take as a gen ed.

Prof. Scythes is an incredible teacher. I am a science major and took this class last minute for a gen ed. I have never learned so much about the 1900s in any other class. An 8am with Scythes is totally worth it. My advice is to go to every lecture and take good notes. Easy A if you do so. Also there is no homework and only one paper assignment.

Amazing prof! Take him if you can! I never enjoyed history before this class but Sycthes made me love it. There is a lot of quizzes (SO easy if you take notes), a map quiz to go with it (again, SO easy if you study the map online) and if I remember correctly there were four tests. He lets you miss three times, but I would try not to!

Always mentions when certain things are important for the test, has maps on d2l that you need to know, and posts the prompts for the test essays so you can write it before you even take the test. Prof. Scythes was one of my favorite professors at WCU. He definitely knows what he is talking about and goes into great detail about certain things like battles in his lectures. His lectures are very enjoyable and he takes the time to write down notes on the board rather than simply rely on a power point. Also a very down to earth guy.

Scythes is a great professor. He loves to teach and it shows. His class is very lecture heavy class so sometimes it's hard to listen to and keep up with but he tells history like a story. Gets very distracted in class. Few group assignment where you summarize articles in textbook, tests and quizzes are fine but grades harshly on the essay.

His tests and quizzes are easy for the most part as long as you study hard. The test essays can be a little hard but if you take good notes in class, you'll be good. If you fail this class you've given up on being a conscious human. Make sure to write down what he SAYS too, not just what he writes on the board. That one stumped some absolute geniuses. Hardly any work and what you do is relevant to the lessons. Makes class truly interesting and relatable. Tests are taken DIRECTLY from the notes. Great class!!

One of my favorite professors at WCU. Breakdown of the grades is clear. You need to show up because he doesn't post the notes online. 4 test 4 assignments and 4 quizzes. The test questions are straight from the notes. He's hilarious so class never drags on.

Very guy and easy to understand. Makes class bearable. Tells a lot of jokes/stories (which are actually funny). A lot of note taking, but just study your notes because questions for the test come right from his lecture. Highly recommend taking this class with this professor.

For student teaching, professor Scythes was amazing. He was always available to discuss any ideas or issues that I may have been having and was very clearly passionate about both historical content and education. He's a great teacher and a great mentor who I would recommend to anyone.

I normally hate history but I loved this class. His lectures arent boring and he really explains topics well. Its lecture heavy so you need to go to class and take a lot of notes bc he doesnt use PowerPoints. He tells you in class what will be on tests and quizzes and an easy map to memorize, so they arent bad. One 1000 word paper on a film.

I took this class as a gen. ed. requirement and was worried as history is not my strong suit. Professor Scythes turned that around for me. He tells lots of stories that won't be on the test, but are really interesting to hear about. He gives you the maps at the beginning of the year, so there's plenty of time to memorize them before the test.

Dr. Scythes is an extremely interesting person. He tells great stories that really immense you into the history you are learning. His lectures are like sitting through a story time, you definitely have to take notes but other than that you will be fine. If I have room to take more electives, I will take any class Dr. Scythes teaches.

attendance goes down after three absences but only by half a percentage. I would highly advise that you make a friend in this class if you're bad at note taking because the tests and quizzes are 100% based on worded lecture. its a lot of notes but the material is not hard to remember because he explains it in a way that is relatable and interesting

Come to every class and take detailed notes and you will get an A. He gives you history in story form, and it's interesting. The class follows a predictable pattern, and he well prepares you for tests. You NEED the book to pass (won't have to read much, however). Though he seems just silly at first, he cares deeply about his students as people.

Professor Scythes is one of the best professors I've had on campus. I took both HIS 151 and 102 with him and loved both. Everything comes from his lectures. I didn't even buy the book for 102, but he doesn't have actual notes so be prepared to write and listen. He is also hilarious so if you need a 100 level course Scythes is the way to go!

Scythes is a very good teacher. His 3 hour 8am was actually bearable because he is such a good storyteller. He's a very nice man that genuinely cares that you learn. However, he does require you to get tow books. One, you'll need to reference in tests (which makes no sense because they're not open book). The other, you will need 4 pages from....

Scythes once told me he read his ratemyprofessor reviews when he was sad to make himself feel better. This man is the legend this website says he is. He lectures, and you take notes. Everything he says is on the test or else he wouldn't say it. The only grades are 1 paper and tests/quizzes with maps, which he gives you. An absolute stud of a prof.

I took Professor Scythes' HIS 100 class because I needed it for my gen eds, but I couldn't have picked a more easy and interesting class. Class was broken into 4 sections, with a quiz and exam for each. There was also one paper. Textbook was "required," but only get it if it will help you study, as his exams and quizzes are solely based on lecture.

Absolutely my favorite professor so far. He made history so interesting when many of my high school teachers failed at that. No textbook needed, only one paper but it is very easy. When he says hint hint, WRITE IT DOWN. He is hilarious and always telling jokes. If I could take him for all of my classes, I would. I learned so much from him.

This man is just amazing. He made me question whether or not I want to continue with my science degree (took this as a gen ed) and pursue something to do with history. While I decided to stick with science, this class truly did make me enjoy college (and life?) just a bit, which is more than usual. Smart dude. I could listen to him for hours.

He made class enjoyable and fun, gives map's with each quiz and exam but if you study and look over them ahead of time and not the night before you'll do good. He leaves practice maps on D2L. Overall a good and funny professor I suggest you take him for a gen ed.

Scythes is a really funny, down to earth guy. He is kinda holier than thou in terms of making fun of gen x kids but we kind of deserve it. Lectures are super important and tests are easy. Only complaint is he can get off topic for like 40 minutes and waste class time. Most of the times it has to do with the material we are learning about anyway!

Prof. Scythes class was very interesting and he was super clear on what you needed to know for the tests. He puts the notes on the smart board and you copy them down, he usually gives you 10 questions that will be on the test too. Needed a history gen ed, made a good decision. Easy quizzes and tests, got a A. Definitely recommend.

Professor Scythes gives maps for quizzes/exams, which helps to increase your grade. There are three quizzes and three exams, they're all pretty easy as long as you take detailed notes. For the exams, there are essays, but he gives the prompt to you ahead of time. He is a good person, willing to help your success.

This class was easy!! 4 tests, 4 quizzes, and 2 page paper. Attendance is mandatory but as long as you just show up and take some notes its almost an guaranteed A. Prof. Scythes likes to share stories about his passed adventures and makes class really enjoyable.

THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. I am a History major, but this man solidified the fact that I want to be a History professor someday. If I were to have a History lecture, I would do it EXACTLY how he does it. He is very funny and knows his stuff. He is knowledgeable in just about all parts of History. Participation matters and tests aren't bad.

He is such a great teacher, you can tell he loves what he teaches. He also knows not everyone in his class is a history major and makes it so everyone can be involved in the class. Truly a great professor and would recommend taking more classes with him.v

Professor Scythes is really awesome, his 151 class is relatively lecture heavy, but his lectures were always interesting to me. He is very passionate about history and is always willing to help. Participation is key! It's easy to participate in his class and he really appreciates it!

My absolute favorite professor at West Chester. I hated history - took a few of his classes - now i'm a history minor. Don't know how he doesn't have a 5.0. You take A LOT of notes but it's literally all the info you need for tests. He literally tells everything like a story. Super sarcastic. Such an enjoyable class and a really nice guy.

Prof Scythes is one of the nicest profs ever. He keeps his lectures entertaining even when talking about boring stuff. He really cares about his students and loves when you ask questions and participate. There's pretty much no hw for the class so the only grades you get are from the quizzes/exams and the presentation.

By far the best professor I ever had! Made His150 my favorite class, he makes all lectures interesting. Important to note every time he emphasizes a certain piece of information he usually puts it on the exams and quizzes. Make sure to student the map he provides for the quizzes and exams. Amazing guy. Take him if you can.

Dr. Scythes is amazing. There's a lot of material, but his approach to teaching the material is incredibly accessible. Coming from a student who struggles greatly with anxiety, the presentation my partner and I had to do for our readings was nowhere near as bad as I expected. He is nitpicky about grammar on essay, so keep an eye on that. He's great

Loved taking this class with professor scythes! His lectures are more like storytelling and he is very thorough with what he is putting on the quizzes and exams. All tests are multiple choice and there is homework. The only issue I have had was how hard he grades the map quizzes. The cities will be marked wrong if they are a millimeter off.

Lectures are entertaining, he is great about answering any questions you have. If you need to take a history class, I'd definitely recommend trying to find a section that Scythes is teaching.

Prof Scythes is one of the best at WCU, he always makes class interesting and enjoyable. You'll have to do an hour long partner presentation but it's really not bad, and I usually HATE presenting. There's also 3 essays which he is a tough grader on, mainly for grammar. As long as you pay attention and take good notes you'll do well in the class.

Professor Scythes was a pleasant surprise this semester. He made history FUN. He spends the whole class lecturing, but he makes them engaging and entertaining. He tends to go off task but I loved that because it gives us quick brain breaks in between all of the information we're taking in. He is hysterical, smart, and a great overall teacher.

I am so glad I was able to experience having Prof. Scythes as a professor. I truly learned a lot in his class. Yes, you will have quizzes with specific questions / locations but he explicitly tells you when you need to take notes during his lecture and gives you the exact maps to study. He hints at which questions will be on the quizzes and exams and occasionally gives handouts if the class falls behind. Overall, a decent guy... show up and you'll do fine.

In this class there are 3 quizzes that consist of multiple choice and a map. He gives you the map in advance. There are 3 exams which have multiple choice, same map from the quiz and an essay part which he tells you what it will be in advance. He teaches very well and makes it fun. As long as you show up and take notes you will do fine!!

TAKE HIS CLASS! Took his class a year+ ago and enjoyed it so much. He teaches history like he's telling the plot of a soap opera, i looked forward to his class every morning. tests were easy. As long as you took notes and studied, it's a fantastic class. hes available outside of class and cares about his students. Hes hilarious. Loved his class!!!!

Prof scythes really taught history in a way that made me understand it. He is a very straightforward person with everything he does. Other than the paper and presentation there is no work outside of the tests/quizzes. However, you will have to study! Take notes on everything he says because you never know what he will choose to put on the test.

He's an amazing professor, history felt like story time and it was honestly the reason I got up in the mornings to take his class. I will say you HAVE to study the map of the US and the content, but he breaks it into four sections so it is very easy to organize. Its a level 100 class but he grades it like a level 300 check your grammar and rubric.

This was one of my favorite classes I've taken! I was genuinely interested in the lectures. Dr. Scythes is really funny and engaging and tells history like a story. He doesn't have PowerPoints and talks kind of fast, so you have to take a lot of notes and pay attention. The tests are difficult and you'll need to study but I still loved the class!

Professor Scythes is a great professor to take. The only thing is your only grades are 4 quizzes and 4 tests so make sure you study! He is funny and makes class interesting. He does not use any type of powerpoint when lecturing so make sure to listen and write down everything, but he will tell u what is important for quizzes and tests as he talks.

Professor Scythes is a very nice man, and a great teacher. He teaches in a way you want to listen. Just be aware he does just lecture through class. There are no lecture slides, he just talks and you write notes. Grade is based on 4 quizzes and 4 tests, so study hard!

One of my favorite professors. After high school I didn't really like history, but his class really made me find it interesting again, and makes me excited to teach it one day! He's a little more traditional in grading and things but he's up front about it which I appreciate. Always encourages people to come to office hours too and willing to help.

Prof Scythes is my favorite I've had at WCU. Every lecture I'm locked in because of how interesting he makes history class. As long as you take pay attention and take notes, quizzes and exams are easy. And as long as you participate and attend class, you can easily become one of his favorites. Professor Scythes' class is wonderful to be in. If you're not a fan of history, this guy's teaching will change your mind. Only downside is that the only grades in the class are quizzes and exams and a few group assignments every month or so. He also doesn't do PowerPoint so sit in the front and lock in cause it'll help you a lot.

Dr. Scythes was a great Professor! He had great stories to tell, and made each lecture engaging. I recommend picking a class time you will almost never miss, as the class is almost entirely lectures. This class isn't "free," but if you show up to the lectures and pay attention, studying is minimal! Highly recommend!!

Scythes is the funniest prof I've ever had. He has an amazing personality and makes learning history interesting. Every lecture is told like a drama filled story. Watch out for the maps on quizzes. If your capital (marked by a dot) is a millimeter off he will mark it wrong. You don't need to read the textbook if you pay attention & take notes.

Please take Dr. Scythes. He is the funniest prof ive ever had and have never been more invested in a gen ed class. He lectures so well its crazy how engaged you get and excited to know more. Only graded on 4 quizzes and 4 exams so if you don't take notes and study you will fail. He is amazing you will love him.
