Extremely boring and awful teacher. He might know his stuff but sucks at getting his message across. Unreal how much I can't stand this guy's voice.
Boring, wordy, but probably an excellent researcher. Easy to get a B, hard to get a C, impossible to get an A.
I took this class as an independent study course and the professor was unavailable for help the entire time.
Monotone, boring, tests are difficult. Not recommended.
very boring class, but nice guy and always willing to help. homework takes awhile to do sometimes and you have the option of attending a CL session each week for 2 additional points
I can honestly say this is the worst teacher I have ever had. If you can get an econ class with a different teacher, do it. Only good thing is there is a very generous curve...I failed the final and still ended up with a B in the class.
He is the worst professor I have had. He tries to explain concepts but does so in a way that is not clear to students. I'm sure he is a great researcher, but when it comes to instruction, he is definitely bottom of the barrel.
Self knows his stuff, but god his voice is impossible to stand. I might have been able to pay attention in this class if it was only 50 minutes, but I couldnt handle 1.5 hours of this voice. He cant grab attention to save his life. Luckily his book was great and the tests were fairly easy. Ive heard great things about other Profs so check them out
Not a good teacher at all. Cannot communicate his ideas into useful thoughts. Sounds like kermit the frog though.
Self is very confusing at times. I got an A in the class and my best advice for doing the same is this: read the chapters two times. Once before the lecture then again before the exams. Do all the hw problems including CL and also extra ones online. The exams will really test if you know the stuff but were not too bad.
WORST TEACHER EVER
NOT A GOOD TEACHER SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND! QUIZZES ARE IMPOSSIBLE AND DON'T GO ALONG WITH ANY OF THE NOTES
Professor Self has an awful monotone voice. It quite possibly makes econ more boring than it would be otherwise.
If you can get a B in this class I'd be astonshied. Tests are like taking the SATS all over again. By far the WORST and HARDEST E201 teacher
Self is a good guy. He gets a bum rap because he is kind of strange and boring. Tests are difficult but if you put in the work you can come out with an A or B easily. His office hours are helpful if you go to them. I don't regret taking him.
His tests are impossible and just staying awake during class is an accomplishment. He is so monotone when he speaks
Self has a different teaching style than what 99% of the population could ever understand. It is almost impossible to pass this class regardless of how hard you try. If you want to take the chance and take him, good luck because you will regret it.
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Tests are near impossible, he words them to make no sense. Class is boring and useless. Practice tests are useless and don't apply to the test, as he doesn't teach the material on the test. Easily the hardest teacher in the department. Don't take economics if you have to take him.
This professor is unintentionally hilarious. He is very entertaining to watch, but lectures are essentially worthless. If you have difficulties learning from a book, do not take this class. Otherwise, it's an easy A.
Don't take him. He's the hardest microeconomics teacher. I got an A in the class, but I had studied endlessly. His lectures are useless to go to. He does not explain well. Also, you will not be able to sell the book back at the end of the year.
One of the most boring lectures I've ever had. Impossible to pay attention to him. Doesn't relate to the students. Luckily, everything you need to know is in the textbook. I didn't pay attention once in class and ended up getting an A thanks to the book. Don't blow off the readings, they are the only thing that can prepare you for his exams!!
Horrible teacher for econ. He's test are ridiculous. I studied more than I ever had in any other class for this one and only managed a B-. Lectures are unbelievably boring. CL sessions were great though. They helped a lot.
Do not take this class if you want a good grade. He is horrible at explaining things. Every question on the test is a trick question. Lectures just made me more confused.
Not great, but I've had worse. Other than that class is pretty straight forward and easy
He takes what the textbook says turns it upside down and runs it through a trash compactor.
Garbage
Extremely hard, trick questions all the time. Extra time commitment with homework that other teachers don't assign. Take tests on Saturday mornings. This teacher will hurt your GPA. His extra credit opportunities actually do very little to help your grade, do not be fooled into thinking he is ok. Very boring teacher who sounds like Kermit the frog.
Worst teacher I have ever had
This professor is terrible. Hardest class that i have ever taken. Homework takes hours upon hours and tests are full of trick questions. Sample exams dont really help and other E201 teachers are much better and easier. kills gpa!!
Drop if possible.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever had to take!! Plan on doing tons of homework if you take him. He has a monatone voice and attendance is mandatory. His tests are filled with trick questions and going to his office hours are pointless!! Take any other professor!
The class is very difficult with hard topics to understand. Self is a good guy and a good techer. You will prolly get a higher grade with someone else but understand economics alot less.
Tests are on Saturdays. There is a test 2 weeks before the final. THEY ARE IMPOSSIBLE. THE BOOK IS OVER $100 AND CANNOT BE RE-SOLD. You have to get a subscription to WSJ which is the biggest waste of trees. Im in SPEA and found out I can take this class at Ivy Tech and students who have find it far more easy and learned a lot more.
Lecture is extremely boring and hard to stay awake. I would recommend any other teacher. Exams are full of "gotcha" questions. I went to office hours a lot and he was very unhelpful. I don't think he's a mean guy, but his personality makes him seem rude.
He sucks hardcore. I would have rather taken an 8 A.M. with any other teacher. His tests are rediculously hard. You can know all the material and more, but your tests won't show it in the least bit.
he sucks at teaching. but he's a good guy.
He loves econ and you can tell, but he is by far the hardest teacher for E201. I recommend going to every lecture because you get a point for attendance but you won't learn a thing. His questions are ridiculous and understanding concepts and reading the book will not be enough. I studied about 20 hours a week for this class and still got a C
Professor Self is a great guy. He is nice and willing to help if you ask for it. He verbalizes the concepts in a way that is a little more sophistocated than most professors, but if you pay attention in class you will be fine. I did all the homework and studied for the exams and came out with an A.
Not helpful as a professor. Went in several times to get help but was incapable of explaining the concepts. I'm sure he knows exactly what he's talking about but was unable to break it down for students. Even though I attended every lecture and help session, still got a D in the class.
Talks like Kermit the Frog. Very difficult to comprehend his lectures. Notes are helpful but combersome. Have to read book/notes 10 times to understand concept. Grading scale helps. Study hard and you can pull off a B. If possible, take someone else.
class is very difficult..Self knows what he's talking about but doesn't explain it very well..CL sessions help somewhat..you have to study hard for this class
He is very knowledgeable, but definitely not good at explaining concepts to the class. Very hard to understand anything he is talking about and tests are RIDICULOUSLY difficult. I suggest taking Econ with anyone other than him unless you have extensive knowledge of economics already and love a huge challenge.
Worst prof ever
It would be difficult to talk in monotone for as long as he does..would have rather taken another teacher at 8am. lecture is extremely boring and the tests are extremely difficult. stay away
Quite possibly the worst professor currently on the payroll at IU. When you think of college professors being scholars rather than teachers, this man comes to mind. I'd rather take a 6am class with someone else than ANY class with him. HIGHLY recommend taking someone else. Can't teach to save his life and goes on random rants in class.
Definitely a challenging class. I would highly recommend actually attending class and CL. The tests are hard, but doable. STUDY. Utilize office hours, and it is plausible to get an A. Best of Luck.
Ridiculous. He trys to confuse students, and his clarity is absolutely awful.
His grading system is ridiculous and does not make sense (to me) at all, exams are not hard... until you get to the final exam (STUDY FOR THAT THING LIKE CRAZY). Econ is econ and if you're going to take self be prepared to think economically. GO TO CL
horrible professor.. after one semester you'd rather gauge your eyes out then take him again.. very confusing and lots of trick questions on tests.. i didn't do well on any tests and i study and never missed a class
Self is an awful teacher. I actually liked economics before and now i will never take another econ class at IU.
don't understand why people hate him. I took his class because the class schedule was perfect for me, but I got scared because I heard a lot of bad comments about him. I'll tell you the truth. He is not that bad. I recommend him if you're faithful student attending every class and CL.
continued... that's how I did for his class. I showed up every lecture and CL. I got a full extra credit. For lab quiz hw, I highly recommend you to do study plan first and then do quizzes!! There are the same questions to help you out. I got 23% for my first assessment which means I had never learned about econ, but I finally got an A now :)
If you have this teacher, you really need to switch. Unless you like spending 2-5 hours doing homework a night, then this guy is your man! But seriously though, this guy sucks.
Absolutely horrendous. I came into IU planning to major in economics and was extremely excited to take the course. I am now planning on dropping my Economics major purely because of his class. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE
I would like to let everyone know you will regret taking this class with Professor Self, I promise you. He gives 4 saturday morning tests throughout the semester and I would use many swear words when describing him to you but I am not allowed on this site
I would like to warn everyone from enrolling in Professor Self's E-201 course. What he "teaches" during class is in no way related to what is on his exams. His exams, by the way, take place on Saturday mornings at 9 AM. Do whatever you can to get out of his class. By the way, his midterm is after the drop date, so if you do poorly you're SOL.
this guy is hard to understand. the only way you'll do well is if you put in your own time outside of class to do the readings and practice quizzes online and fully understand the material.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is useless. I went to every office hours, read every chapter and it did not help. The quizzes are above graduate level and the test's are jargon. Lowest grade I've received at IU and probably the hardest I worked.
This dude is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He knows the material he teaches very well but he just does not know how to teach at all. I have only missed 2 classes and attended the Cl classes and still have NO CLUE to what he is teaching. I would go ahead and say never ever take this teacher.
Terrible teacher. Makes no sense in class and barely teaches anything. Saturday tests and homework that is harder than other e201 tests. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Save yourself. I did not learn a thing about economics from Prof Self. But I somehow got by with a C and froze my butt off walking to the exams at 8am on four Saturday mornings. Also, I had absolutely no interaction with him: 400 person lecture hall, Grad Assistant's answered questions & graded exams.
Self was terrible! Because I failed his class I can't come back to IUB this fall and there is nothing I can do about it. He's the worst teacher I've ever had. Failed the first exam so I studied harder. Since he only does exams, I thought I would do better so I didn't drop the class(2nd exam was after drop date). Big mistake! Ugh! I hate him!
boring teacher.hard class. it is important to understand the concepts in textbook/
Although he may come off in the wrong way, Self is a very knowledgeable professor who goes above and beyond to try to reach his students. If you go to his lectures, read the book, and do the online assignments - you will do well in the course. Just because you can't Ace a course by simply going to lecture doesn't mean he's a bad teacher.
The worst class I could have imagined. He is incredibly vague in his lectures and it's hard to apply it to the homework, and after every section you have around a 20 question, 1.5 hr online assignment that tells you what you scored on it, but not which individual questions you got wrong, and to get a better score you have to retry it all over again
Getting an A is not easy, but doable. Avg. GPA in my class was a 2.2. 14 out of 164 got an A or higher. Don't expect to learn from him as much as you'll learn on your own from close-reading. Go to CLs and don't skip class, because you get extra credit and he shows special calculations - otherwise, naptime: bc his voice is a lullaby
Self is incredibly boring and his lectures make little sense. Reading the textbook is everything in the class. It's very doable.
Expand your knowledge on Economics by chosing Professor Jim Self. Some people think his lectures are boring. Really, he just uses dull concepts and makes them intellectual. Read the textbook to learn definitions. Go to his lectures to understand them conceptually. The examples he uses are original and valuable. Economics is all about winning.
Although he can be dull sometimes, he does an incredible job teaching the principles of the class. I've never learned more from any other professor during my three years here. I did have to work hard just to get a B+, but the class is heavily weighted and you get extra credit simply for going to class! Take him if you truly want to learn economics
Prof Self is NOT an easy teacher, but I wouldn't call him a horrible teacher. Yes it is difficult to stay awake in class, and yes his tests are probably the hardest, but he does try to help. He offers office hours, CL sessions (optional group work), and he is available after class. Most people complain because they don't bother with the extra help.
kinda sounds like lt. Dangle from Reno 911. but knows what hes talking about.
By far the worst teacher on my schedule. I've managed to ace every college exam so far, but with self I have to read the textbook and use myeconlab to learn anything. Staying awake in his class is impossible unless you have a full 8 hours, and even then you won't learn anything by listening to him anyway. Do yourself a favor and stay away from him.
Very difficult class. Online homework is very tough and takes a lot of time. Exams are manageable if you study hard.
he was awful doesnt speak well, is boring, and his test and online quizzes are impossible. had to drop before second test since everything got harder week after week, and he just got worst as we moved on.
Cannot understand anything he is talking about. The only way you'll learn is if you SELF-TEACH yourself. He does not teach the proper topics in class. the only reason you have to go to class is to get attendance points, but it's almost impossible to stay focused. I learn more from the TA during a 30 minute lab than a whole week of class.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!
Self's class is very difficult, my class had almost 300 kids in it so it is hard to get help. His econlab quizzes are difficult too but the thing I hate the most about his class is that his tests are on saturday mornings at 9 am, a huge bummer. Almost everyone has difficulty with this class.
absolutely the worst economics professor i have had. To give him credit he probably knows his stuff, but is awful at relaying information to his students and expressing what needs to be learned.
Worst teacher ever. Avoid him at all costs.
I've been to two universities and highschoolers, and he is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. All exams are on weekends which completely throws off my studying and provides no down time for a busy student. I dont like him at all
Not as bad as everyone said he was going to be, but definitely not the best lecturer that you will find at IU. I skipped most of his lectures because I couldn't focus in them. Read the book and do CL and study a lot for the exams and you will easily get a B+/A-. He gets a bad rap because he is monotonous but he wasn't as bad as people say he is.
Econ in itself is tough. He knows his stuff. Does a bad job explaining the simple concepts, but a good job on the harder concepts. Uses his own new textbook every semester. Rather boring. Gives extra credit for coming to class. You can get basically what he teaches by reading the book though. His tests were harder than the department's tests. Got a B+.
Microeconomics is not an easy class to begin with, and Self does not make it any easier. I rarely got anything out of his lectures. You're much better off just reading the book on your own. His grading system is really hard to understand too. Self isn't impossible, but you'll definitely have to put in some work!
terrible class. Self is a pretty awful teacher and isn't good at explaining the material. ask questions in class, pay attention, do the study plans on myeconlab and you should be good. i heard the other micro teacher is pretty bad as well.
Do the Fed Challenge; you won't regret it!
He was very helpful in relating material to current events. He had no trouble challenging his students and rewarding them accordingly.
honestly, he is one of the worst teachers i have ever had on any level. if possible, do not take Self. Seriously, stay away
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Prof self style of lecturing is was very difficult to pay attention to. If you had questions he would answer wholly and honestly but when it was time for the tests, all info learned in class wasn't relevant
Professor Self's class is impossible to pay attention in, especially since he speaks in monotone the whole time. I've had to resort to teaching myself and show up to class just for the attendance points. Do not take his class. Trust me.
He is a straight up terrible teacher. It is impossible to pay attention and is voice sounds like the professor from Ferris Buhlers day off. Monotone. Don't take this professor ever.
Hardest and most painful class I've ever taken here at IU. Lectures are incredible unclear and I don't understand a thing he teaches. The book is the only thing I have to rely on which isn't enough to convey the mathematical concepts the exams and online homework test.
This instructor is downright terrible. His lectures are confusing and drab. The entire class of >200 is completely unenthusiastic when he asks questions because the environment is so dull. The homework is done online through myeconlab and the lectures do nothing to prepare you for the difficulty of the assignments. Don't take this class!
He is not a good professor
He is a very poor teacher. He doesn't lecture in a positive way, he is very monotone and tough to listen to, and he goes against his syllabus.
Honestly Dr. Self is not that bad. He has a fair grading scale(a 77 is a B-)and lectures what will appear on the test. With that being said, hes incredibly dull and most find Econ challenging, but if you come in with a basic understanding the lectures reinforce the book material and you should be fine.
Terrible teacher. Lectures don't help only use is to show up for attendance points. Read the book because that will actually teach you something. Do not take this professor.
He offers many areas to receive easy points or extra credit. If you have a basic understanding and especially if you took AP Econ in high school take him. Going to class is a grade booster just because its extra credit. Lectures are dull but between them and the book an A is not impossible.
This teacher is ridiculous. He makes the class 10x harder than it should be. If you just listen in lecture, read the chapters, and put a little work it, it shouldn't be too tough to get a B/B-. To get an A you will have to put an insane amount of time in. He's definitely knowledgeable, but if your grades are important to you, proceed with caution.
James Self is a very confusing teacher to understand if you don't read the book prior to the class meeting. Attendance is the only positive thing you can benefit from lectures. If you don't read you will fail all exams.
He is an awful professor, doesn't give care one bit about his students. He is the most boring/monotone human being that ever existed. His tests are extremely hard and irrelevant to what he teaches. DON'T EVER TAKE HIS CLASS
Not as bad as what everyone says.
The most challenging part of his class is not falling asleep.
I'm struggling more than ever in this class right now. It's so difficult to begin with but Self doesn't put in any effort to bring things down to the basics where you can start to grab onto the topics. I study my ass of, hours upon hours, and only end up with C- at best grades on tests. Try to avoid him and take another. I wish I would've known.
I really enjoyed econ before taking this class. Now, I hate it. I dread this class more than any other because it never makes sense, and CL sessions don't help much either. Find a different teacher.
You will hear a ton of bad things. Most are true. I have taken a highschool econ class. If they say its impossible to get an A thats wrong. Ive gotten a 93% and 95% on the first 2 tests. I start studying 2 days before. to study just read the chapters and take notes then due the practice test. avoid if possible. man up if youre stuck with him
Highly discourage anyone from taking this class. The professor is dull and doesn't do a good job of teaching. I studied for the exams learning the chapters inside and out and using the materials he provided. However, his exams were so unbelievably confusing . I did well on the practice tests he provided and then couldn't understand the exam at all.
half way through the semester i entirely gave up on going to lecture. it only confused me further. instead i dedicated this time to further reading of the book, as the book is the only reason i was able to make it through this class... wish i would have been like you and checked his rating before enrolling with this awful professor.
Worst professor I've had. Uses horrible examples and is extremely boring. Tests are a lot harder than they need to be.
HE IS DEATH. so much harder than any other econ teacher at IU. His tests are ridiculous and he doesnt teach how to solve any problems. unreasonably hard.
Don't take his class. Just don't. His tests are nothing like what the material he gives you to study are and he is the only teacher to make you take a sectional final as well as a departmental. And of course I ace the departmental and fail his sectional… Ridiculously hard teacher.
This professor was seriously awful. The lecture is a joke because you will really try to pay attention for the first week and after that everyone gives up. It's so bad you actually get extra credit for going to class. If you read the book you'll be fine, and you shouldn't have to do too much work to get a B.
This guy is seriously useless. The entire class just shows up for the extra credit. Yes you actually get ec for showing up to class, it's that bad. The only good thing about the class is watching basketball off the guys computer in front of you. Literally no one in the class pays attention, so bring a good book or something to do during the class.
Professor Self is not the best professor around. He is extremely hard to follow in lectures and the entire course is based off of four exam scores. The class overall isn't difficult but he makes it much more confusing that it needs to be. I would not recommend taking him for micro.
I highly recommend that if possible, TAKE THE CLASS WITH ANYONE BUT HIM. I absolutely dreaded going to his class and eventually dropped it. He has a monotone voice and I had trouble not falling asleep in this class. His lecture notes are also irrelevant to the exams. If you do take econ with him, make sure you read the textbook often.
I learned everything in that class from the book. His lectures were too confusing and no matter how much I studied I couldn't get the grade I wanted. Don't take his class.
LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SAY DO EVERYTHING TO AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. His lectures are insanely boring & unclear. He doesn't explains things well & he has his own tests that are harder than other classes. I would have taken an earlier class even if I could have gotten out of taking him. If you have no other options, just make sure you read the book &study
He is not as bad as everyone says. Make sure you go to his office hours and get to know him. Don't underestimate the difficulty of the exams. Take the opportunity to do the Collaborative Learning he offers in order to earn extra points.
People are way too hard on the guy. Is Econ going to be hard regardless of the professor? Yes. He gives extra points for coming to class, going to Collaborative Learning sessions, and the curve is at least 10%. He's helpful during office hours, even if you only come in the morning before the test. At heart, a nice guy. Just boring during lecture.
This was easily the most difficult class I've ever taken. Professor Self knows the material very well but didn't explain hardly at all. The tests are VERY difficult. Make sure you go to class and to the Collaborative Learning sessions that are offered in order to get as many extra points as possible.
Self is a poor instructor, that's just plain and simple. You're required to come to class and he's bad at explaining concepts. The only way I learned the content was by the required online homework. I should have taken this online
I have to say Professor Self is really helpful to his students. If you truly want to learn economics, you should definitely take his class. And really, he is not as bad as every one said.
He is an excellent researched and a truly intelligent lecturer. Lectures may get a bit boring but that does not mean he does not explain the material well. He's quite helpful and an overall nice guy if you bother talking to him/office hours. No mandatory homework, no group projects, no assignments. Just exams and extra credit for CL AND attendance!
Self gets a bad rap, but he's honestly a pretty good professor. If you go to the lectures, take good notes, and put forth an honest effort to learn the material you'll do fine. If you can't follow THESE lectures, you either have a serious problem or need to stop texting and pay attention.
DO NOT TAKE WITH SELF
Going to class actually is pointless aside for the extra credit points each day. I would do other hw in that class bc what he talks about just makes you more confused if anything. READ THE TEXTBOOK if you want to pass. Also if you can afford it, get a tutor, so helpful.
He's a smart guy, but a terrible teacher. Avoid at all costs.
I honestly don't understand why he gets such a bad rep. He gives extra credit just for showing up to class and his tests are insanely easy. As long as you go to class and pay attention (which most people don't) you will have no problem at all getting an A in his class.
I'm pretty sure the only reason Self has such a bad score is because most of his students are freshmen. His lectures aren't always perfect, but they're usually pretty good and he is without a doubt a very solid professor. If you go to class, pay attention, do CL, study, and ask questions there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
A lot of people give him a bad rep but I think that he is an excellent professor. He gives you extra credit for attending class & also provides another opportunity for extra credit by CL sessions. He knows what he's talking about & he gives his students every opportunity they need to succeed. Don't let the negative opinions sway you.
Self gets a bad rap I have had him for two semesters now and he is the best econ professor for the lower level econ classes. You get extra credit for class and for going to his help sessions (basically like review). His lectures are a little dry but if you pay attention he tells you what you need to know. I never read the textbook and got A's.
awful monotone terrible professor
He gives a lot of extra credit. But his tests are much harder than other E201 professors as I realize when studying with my friends. His class is so boring it is next to impossible to stay awake in. You have to read the book religiously or you will fail. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Make sense?
Hardest class I have ever taken. The more you go to lectures the more you will be confused. Not sure how he is still teaching this class.
Horrible Professor!! DO NOT TAKE!! Lectures are long, he only reads from the powerpoint which he posts online, and he lectures in monotone the whole time. Extra help doesn't help, would suggest going to CTS. Hardest class i had this semester, hated it more than anything, would never suggest this on anyone.
This class is not as bad as everyone says it is! Professor Self is helpful if you go to office hours, and you definitely need to read the textbook. He gives a lot of extra credit!
Avoid this teacher at any cost! Grading is tough, test is tough, and he is so boring! Very not helpful.
I took Self's Microecon, and he made things pretty easy. Gives extra credit for attending class, and makes the final test weigh less if you go to his collaborative learning sessions, which are helpful. Easy to get a good grade if you try a little. If you're stuck on a concept question, the answer is always something conservative!
He is not helpful at all. The lecture is boring and long. Although his lecture are clear about what he is talking about, but his grading in test are tough and all the grades are based on 4 test grades. Attendance is extra credit. Maybe try to avoid him.
I enjoyed this class, but if it weren't for the fact that I read the book every day, and practiced, practiced, and practiced every day, I wouldn't have passed. His exams have tricky questions in them, which his assistants admit are useless questions, that can have more than one answer. That's really frustrating when you do your best.
EXTRA CREDIT Econ is econ Self does well in teaching it. Self knows his stuff and is pretty clear. The lectures can be long if you're not interested. If you did fine in highschool Micro, you'll be fine here. EXTRA CREDIT The CL sessions give you hella ExCred. just for showing up. EXTRA CREDIT Every lecture you attend 14 point ExCred
If you get the extra credit and read the book there's no reason you can't get a B. Self is clear and funny at times.
He is awful. Don't take him. Lectures are long and boring and very hard to follow along to. Went to office hours to ask for help and he looked at me like I was stupid for not understanding the concepts. Read the book it is a lot more helpful than listening to him talk.
I have never had such a bad experience with a class. I went in for office hours and he basically laughed at me for wanting help. I would say I am a very studious person, but I could not follow what Self wanted for each of his tests. I had never taken econ before this class and I honestly think I know as much now as I did before taking this class.
The fact that he has taught this for years tells me they don't want him doing anything else. he is terrible, awful, a disgrace.
Professor Self is not anywhere near as bad as people make him seem. Econ is not my best subject, however, I had no difficulty getting an A. You just need to make sure that you are reading the textbook, literally everything on the test is directly from the chapters. Class just reviews over the reading. Really straightforward class.
His lectures are very boring and not very clear. The tests are hard and the CL sessions are not much help at all. Other reviewers who say that he is a good prof or that his class is easy are all interested in econ and probably have experience/knowledge in econ. Those who have no prior knowledge, like myself, will most likely struggle in the course.
He isn't if you pay attention. Study for the tests and do the practice test he provides for you, and you will be fine.
While he is a good teacher if you pay attention, he is very dry and it takes effort to keep yourself involved. The material is pretty standard for intro to micro, but it definitely is not easy
Stopped going to lecture after Exam 1, and had better grades on my second and third exam when I taught myself...... His language is hard to understand, tests are hard too. CL is like another "optional" discussion except for that if you dont go you're almost guaranteed to have a bad grade.... solutions to non-graded homework are helpful tho
Everyone says that Prof Self is just meh, but go to class and take notes. Even you don't follow up with the class, cramming works right before exams. There are no graded homework however there are 4 exams throughout the semester.
Go to class its easy extra credit that adds up. He is an economics robot. He will ramble on in on using only the language of economics and if you cannot learn this language you will struggle. His tests are worded extremely poorly and this is the only factor that makes them really difficult. His grade distribution is generally low.
Professor Self can be really boring. He isn't a bad teacher, but you definitely have to focus and pay attention to pass. I highly suggest reading the chapters while in his class because at times he can be unclear. Also he isn't the best at answer questions when they are asked.
I fell asleep in almost all of his lectures because he's so monotone and boring and I love economics. Also he purposely words questions on tests so that they confuse you and also he is not very helpful. If someone asked him a question in class he'd often respond in a vague manner or make it seem like it was a stupid question. Try to avoid.
Simply the worst. He's the most boring human alive. Took AP economics in high school and I can almost guarantee I know more than him. He bounces around topics and does not explain them accurately. If I had not previously taken this class, his idiocy would make me fail. You are better off teaching yourself the material and then showing up to test.
Voice is very monotone. Make sure you do the reading. Online actives help understand material BUT NOT prepare for exams. Test are unclear. Lectures are boring... but go to class easy extra credit
This class and this professor was almost the reason I didn't get into Kelley. I felt like his lectures were extremely boring and he uses only Econ terms and talks very monotone. The material is tough and his exams are worded very badly. I would start studying for an exam a week in advance because I felt like I had to teach myself everything.
Well, to begin with, I wasn't a "Law" major but I am now due to how poorly I did in this class. His teaching style mediocre at best. If you can get another teacher, do. He doesn't offer extra help at all. He says the words "make sense" no short of 35 times a lecture. I've counted, and once he said it legitimately 50 times in one lecture. Boring.
He is very boring though a lot comes from what he says in class and the text book. Go to the CL's, most of the time we got let out after 20 min and you get points that take away the weight of the final. He gives extra credit for coming to class. His test aren't the easiest but they are passable.
I have always been an attentive student. However, I think I dozed off during every class because he is so boring and talks so much that his words lose meaning. I had to teach myself for the tests, which was unfortunate because tests are the only points in the class. I didn't get much out of lectures - I just went for the attendance points.
Idk if I'll get into Kelley bc of this. Taking his class was the worst decision of my life. I took Econ in hs and it was easy for me, not w/ him. He sounds like he is holding his nose when he speaks. Very repetitive with "make sense" and "uhh". He rambles and his notes don't prepare you for the test. The only way to learn is by reading the book.
I thought I was gonna fail, but he curved our final grades and I ended up with a C-minus. Actually a 2-star professor. Quite boring, he definitely knows his stuff but his lectures get tiring after a few minutes and he teaches at a very slow pace.
Prof Self was not the best Professor, seemed like he did not have any interest in helping you be successful in the class. I went to his office hours and he didn't care to learn my name. You have to read the textbook religiously, everything in his lecture is simply detailed and extra info from what you read in the textbook.
Worst professor I have ever had. He's a sweet man but is an incredibly boring lecturer. His tests are worded very difficultly and are much harder than what you learn in class/read from the textbook. Avoid him at all costs. He curves your final grade but I still failed.
Went to lecture four times got a B in the class. Grading scale is very generous.
Professor Self really does know what he's talking about, but he is by far the most boring lecturer I've experienced at IU. You'll definitely need to read the book and do the practice quizzes he provides, but if you put in the work, getting a decent grade shouldn't be too hard.
I went to every lecture, took notes, went to CL, and read the book multiple times and still didn't pass. Lectures were pretty useless, I only went for participation. I would definitely not recommend taking this class. Online is a way better option
Easy class and wants students to do well
This class was super easy. If this course is required, then you must take him or you are going to regret. Dr. Self's teaching style was so exceptionally clear and my respect for him was so high that it couldn't get any higher.
Very easy class! Just study a little and you will probably get a decent grade. 10 out of 10.
Awful. Nothing from exams comes from lectures and textbook. Even passing is impossible because he is not helpful at all. I wish I can give him a zero for his rating.
Terrible class. He speaks to students like we all understand econ in the way he does. Very hard to pay attention to. Class is super boring.
Not good at explaining things and then gives you a hard test - good luck
Most boring lectures of all time combined with his annoying nasally voice makes attending class even for extra credit a drag. Most entertaining thing to do in class is to count the number of times he can say "Make Sense?" in one lecture. Just do yourself a favor and don't take his class...
He teaches concepts in depth but isn't a good lecturer. Reading the next book is more beneficial than attending lectures, but extra credit for attending lectures help. There are better teachers.
Honestly, he's not really that bad. Sure, he may tend to be very boring, but he teaches you what you need to know for the tests. Also, he has a very kind grading scale, and you have the option to get a decent amount of extra credit. Print out the note packets and bringing them to class. CL sessions are also helpful, and they give you extra credit.
Dr. Self seems to be a nice guy but my lecture hall held 200 average, so it was kind of hard to really know. Any one on one help you get will be from a TA, and I highly recommend befriending one. Lectures are often vague and he speaks in a very monotone way, so it's hard to focus. Do the reading and attend CL unless you're naturally good at econ.
The worst and most monotonous voice I've ever heard. I've never liked econ classes but every single day in his class confused me. Topics that should have been easy felt convoluted and confusing-he's so smart but not good at teaching. The book kind of helped but every time I thought I finally understood a topic I would get confused again.
Dr. Self's depth of understanding skews his ability to break complex ideas and theories down simply, as his definition of "simple" in econ is far beyond an intro-level understanding. Approach this course as "Econ is the science of causes and effects" know the causes, effects, and formulas. You'll be fine. Also, his sweater game is 10/10.
Very hard tests when compared to homework assignments and lecture slides
Not caring. Gives little constructive feedback. Students do not respect him. Not hilarious. The worst of the worst. Please, fire this man.
Wouldn't be a bad teacher, but is so incredibly dry, even though I liked the class overall, would not recommend taking him unless you need an extra 50 minutes of sleep.
I have take Econ in high school and I definitely enjoy the content of this course. However Prof Self can't convey the idea clearly and the content is disjointed. There are way better teachers out there. Don't take his class unless you know econ so well and don't want to do homework. Plus his tests are tricky and really hard.
Professor Self arguably gives the hardest tests in the econ department. His multiple choice questions can be very confusing but a good deal come from reading. The class was very lecture heavy and dry. However, he is a very smart guy and passionate about economics. If you take this class, you have to read and pay attention to lectures.
I didn't expect Econ to be as easy as it was with Self. (And I didn't take AP Econ in high school). The tests are a breeze as long as you study about a week in advance (the wording isn't meant to trip you up, it's just to make sure you understand the concepts). Lectures are dry and I usually did other homework during the class. There's extra credit
I definitely would have failed this class had I not taken Economics in highschool. His lectures will put you to sleep, and he lacks the ability to explain anything clearly. I easily gained more teaching myself the material than from his lectures. However, his grading scale is generous, and going to CL gets you extra credit. Avoid this man...
Professor Self's class was painful to endure and difficult to understand. I took AP Micro and Macro in high school and still found myself struggling in this class. If I had no background in economics, I would definitely have not understood many of the things he tried to explain. Luckily the class is curved but would not recommend Self to anyone.
This guy is HORRIBLE! Make sure you don't take any classes with him. He's not helpful at all and doesn't care at all about students. His exams are insane and they do not accurately reflect what was covered in class and homework assignment. As I just said, do not take him. You will regret it.
Worst professor at IU. Try your best to avoid him whenever you have a chance.
Amazing! Very caring about students and tries to help you as long as you show up.
He himself is okay, I can feel that he is trying to help us do well. His exams though, I studied hard every time and rarely pass. Good luck ppl
He really knows the material and is a good teacher. The hard part is paying attention in class because his lectures are a little boring. That being said, it may be hard to make any discussion about microeconomics interesting. CL was incredibly helpful and the AIs are awesome.
Easily the worst prof I have had. Lectures are very boring, he has a very monotone voice that makes it hard to pay attention. Grade is based solely off of tests. Posts tests grades in view em making it hard to know your grade. Attendance isn't mandatory but is taken on TopHat, however i recommend going to class.
This dude is just the woat.
Honestly, it is almost impossible to find a good E201 class. I choose professor self just because he gives extra credits for attendance to class and CL, and he adds huge curve to every test.
Absolutely deplorable! Went to his office hours to get help and he acted as telling me not to bother him. He does not teach, doesn't post any helpful materials, gives unfair questions on tests, doesn't respond to email, and doesn't care about any of the students! Worst professor ever.
Self is hard. BUT if you read the book before class it will be much easier to understand him during lectures (you actually understand what he is saying). Yes, his exams are tough but if you study and go to CL sessions you'll be fine. The amount of effort you put into this class will determine your grade.
horrible horrible HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIM
I honestly ended up having to teach myself from the textbook in order to understand anything in this class. Prof Self is a nice guy and definitely very smart, but I think sometimes he forgets hes teaching freshman econ - the way he explains things is so complex and technical that it makes you feel like you are taking a grad school level course.
Self is a really nice guy but an incredibly dry lecturer. Econ was already not my favorite and he doesn't add a lot of fun to the class. His lectures are helpful for material but you don't get any good practice for test like problems. The tests always seemed to be designed to mess you up.
Professor Self gives a lecture every class so I highly recommend attending if you want to pass the class. Though the subject material is not the most interesting, he does does his best to make it bearable. His tests are pretty difficult but he does offer extra credit!
He is the worst professor at IU. Please do not take him, avoid him at all costs. lectures are dry as hell and does not explain concepts very well.
Professor Self is really boring and does not make an effort to make his class fun. The class was not particularly super demanding, but the class is extremely test heavy. Go to the CL classes and get extra credit. That is nice. Would not recommend taking him because he does not drop the lowest test score like the other ECON201 classes.
Read the textbook. Go to every CL session. Save up some money and try to go to some of the campusts Test review sessions (not private lessons) before the final. Print out lecture notes beforehand and write them in during class. Your lowest grade is replaced by your final grade. There is a weird point system so dont be crazed when you dk ur grade
Don't take his class. He is very smart but an awful teacher. He is way too technical about the easiest topics, making them seem much harder to understand than they actually are. Tests are awful; they are nothing like the practice problems provided.
People give Self a bad rap and say that he is really difficult but if you read the textbook there is no reason why you should not get an A. Very little work but the lectures are EXTREMELY boring. Not a bad professor to take.
I wouldnt take Microeconomics with Dr. Self again, but its not the end of the world if you get him. His lectures are very boring and if you dont read the book beforehand its very easy to get lost or doze off. There are extra credit sessions that cushion your grade which is very helpful when its time for the final.
This guy does not teach what is on his exams. He talks about the surface of micro but never straightforward. Exam questions are not even close to what he talks about during lecture so you might as well skip class. Waste of time going to this class and TAs and myself taught me more about micro than self ever did.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. Does not seem passionate about teaching at all and lectures were extremely boring. Take any other professor to earn your econ credit. Would NOT recommend
He is very disrespected when in reality he is such a nice person! And if students actually went to his office hours they would know that he is helpful.
His lectures do absolutely nothing, I had to teacher myself everything, and I asked him why I got something wrong he said, watch my lecture video, too hard to explain on email. This has been the most frustrating class due to the lack of help.
You will be better off with any other Macro/Micro professor.
really general lectures, really specific content questions on test. would not recommend
The textbook was easily the best resource. Watching lectures somehow made it more confusing than it would be if I just taught the material to myself. Class/office hours were more helpful for clarifying and asking questions than really learning the material. Reading the textbook was definitely a must!
He's smart, but teaches in a way that makes the material seem 10x more difficult than it actually should be. Notes, lectures, textbook, everything is so overloaded with random information that it's hard to isolate key ideas. Key definitions and formulas are sandwiched between excessively specific notes, it's like Wikipedia vomited on the course.
Teaches directly from the textbook. Typos all over slides sometimes make it difficult to read and understand. Overall, poor class experience. Take micro from someone else if you can.
The content he teaches is quite complex towards the end of the semester however, it is all in his lectures and textbook. His office hours are always helpful and Professor Self is actually a really nice guy. It is really upsetting to see the lack of respect that many students show during his classes.
Professor Self means well and seems very passionate about Economics, however has a hard time making it digestible for the average person. He doesn't use canvas for grades and make you calculate it yourself. As well as gives 10 pop quizzes over the course of the semester. I have never disliked a class as much as this one.
Prof Self is pretty average. The class really just depends on how well you know Micro. It's AP Micro all over with a few new concepts. His class is graded by 3 exams, each worth like 20% of your grade, weekly quizzes due every Friday, and random in class pop quizzes. His lectures are ok, his slides are very basic and don't go into a lot of detail.
Slightly boring professor, but he knows what he's talking about. I only opened the textbook once, but I'm doing fine in the class. All information can be found in the lectures.
Professor Self is very easy going and helpful with understanding the concepts. Gave more than enough opportunity to students to get better grades on exams, in class problems, and a small project. Very good teacher.
Not that bad I just hated econ but I passed and idk a thing ab it, the weekly quizzes are easy to cheat in and a good way to earn points, theres a lot of in class questions to earn points to, always an extension on homeworks, final and midterm are basically the whole grade, gives lots of chances to get help of you need it
Self is not a very engaging teacher at all. Frequently found myself drifting out of focus in this class. Some lecture slides are pointless and he adds so much unnecessary fluff to his explanations it's hard to get the core concepts. He tries teaching everything with real world examples, but most of the time that's not the best way. Pop quizzes too.
Professor Self is a fine teacher. Sometimes though, it felt as though he was making the class more difficult than it needed to be. The class is definitely lecture heavy and there are pop quiz type assignments that will be given in order to take attendance in a way. There are also weekly quizzes every Friday and three course exams.
Very boring lectures that feel like forever. There are very few teats therefore pretty hard to get grade up. In addition there no real way to prep for the test as we are not given study guides or ways to study. Regret taking this class with him, if you can get someone else I would definitely do that.
Professor Self is a very respectable professor. However, he is the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take this class with him unless you want to listen to him read off his powerpoint slides. If you don't go to class you'll fail. He also does graded questions in some lectures so you can't skip. Each exam is 25% of your grade.
The professor is fine but the coursework is incredibly difficult.
Professor Self is a very kind person, however his lectures are very difficult to track with because he moves very quickly. If you do not have a broad understanding of economics before this class, good luck. This class was mandatory for my major requirements and was very difficult.
Professor Self is a good guy and you can tell he has good intentions. However, he does a poor job of explaining material thoroughly and all he does is read off of a powerpoint, making it hard to retain any information. He gives random in-class questions to take attendance, and he gets frustrated when students do not immediately understand things.
Professor Self's lectures leave MUCH to be desired. It is clear that he has a deep understanding of the material, but in my opinion struggles to explain it in ways that are accessible, engaging, and most of all efficient. It takes a disproportional amount of effort outside of class to read and brush up on material in order to do well in the class
in class rn idk whats going on, hate t his guy. droppin out .
Professor Self has very good lectures with very helpful slides. He also provides real world studies to show concepts and is very good at introducing new material in an approachable way.
One of my more difficult classes. Attendance not mandatory but he gave in-lecture pop quizzes that could get you some extra points in the class. He is a pretty stern dude and not very approachable, reads off of powerpoints every class, boring. Each exam is worth 25% of your grade and there are weekly quizzes. Very fair grader. A lot of reading!!
I don't like to rate a professor this low but if you want to dive in to macroeconomics or take credits don't have his class
No extra exercise, a lot of things especially basic one are confused, he eliminate a lot of important contents in Macroeconomics and lack of practice, don't take this
I thought this was a hard class because there was no extra practice aside from what was assigned. Weekly online reading and questions to do, and then in class time. Attendance was not "mandantory" but he did pop quizzes often. You never get to know your grade because he uses "view em" and only updates it after each exam. That was stressful.
NOTE. HEAVY. The entirety of the lectures consisted of him lecturing based on note slides. He gives graded in-class assignments, 2 tests and a final, 2 graded practice sets, and weekly online textbook assignments with a canvas quiz the following Monday. EVERYTHING IS DUE BEFORE 10 PM. Take notes before class and listen to his lecture and jot notes.
Not very engaging lectures but go for the in-class questions. The lectures themselves kind of confused me but the homework cleared a lot up. The homework is due at 10 pm which can be hard. You have to self calc your grade which is hard but he gives generous curves on tests.
Never had a professor this bad. Has no idea how to explain anything and doesn't use canvas grades, so you never know what you have in the class. His assignments are "up for interpretation" but he needs specific answers. Take this class if you want to be confused by every assignment and have a clueless professor.
STAY FAR AWAY. He seems like a solid guy but is an absolute horrendous professor. His lack of tech abilities make doing assignments challenging to find and cannot lecture to save his life. He always puts wrong stuff on his slides on a daily basis and has to correct it during class and still misses wrong information. Also has random pop quizzes.
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. There is a reason why he has over 100 awful reviews. His voice is so annoying, first of all. His assignments are all "up for interpretation" but he needs exact answers or else you will get it wrong. He expects you to read his mind. He gets mad at students asking questions in class, and he is extremely disrespectful.
Clearly Professor Self knows what he's talking about, but he really cannot translate that into something that is accessible and engaging for someone with no prior economics experience. His lectures are incredibly boring and it takes a lot of outside time to get concepts down. He curves tests hugely but this should be a red flag.
Here is a list of reasons why you shouldn't take this class: he disrespects students, doesn't care about student learning or grades, creates terrible exams, and grades very strictly. He isn't able to convey the material he is teaching and doesn't maintain professionalism as a professor and has yelled at students.
So many notes and reads them off a PowerPoint. Take good notes and prepare for class and you'll do okay. Attendance not mandatory but you'll wanna be there. Pop quizzes in class, and weekly work in the online textbook. He's kinda boring.
Professor Self is awful. He doesn't care about his students and doesn't seem to have a full grasp on how to help students grow. He is an extremely hard grader and doesn't and doesn't grade fairly. His lectures are extremely boring and are not beneficial whatsoever. I do not recommend this teacher and recommend finding a different professor
If you have to take E370, DO NOT take it with Prof. Self. He is very knowledgable, but he is not approachable at all. His class is completely lectures, and his exams are much harder than comparable sections. Avoid if you can.
Do not taking E370 with Professor Self. I would've rather had a professor that barely spoke english. He had no empathy for his students and was bad at explaining complicated concepts. His lectures are pointless, but you have to go because he gives pop quizzes that are one of the few other grades you receive in the class besides the exams.
Guy is a robot. Lectures for hours and never stops to look around and realize no one has any clue what he is talking about. I would love to measure the statistical significance of having 125+ one star reviews, but he was never able to teach me how to
Seems like a nice guy from what I've talked to him about in his office hours but man he cannot convey this type of info to students who have never taken stats. Nobody really knows what's going on at all and you can tell by the other reviews they have some things to say about him. Ive never had to retake a icore preq and really hope I don't have to.
Manageable if you pay attention in class and do all of the extra work which is "non-graded". Good luck if you don't.
He's a great guy and an easy grader. Be ready to listen intently in class and take notes on the online HW. Quizzes every week, and in class graded problems every week or so.
Throughout this semester, there were many times where things were not graded correctly or went missing and I find that to be unacceptable. On the final exam, there were three different instances where the test had to be changed due to errors in the questions with key number statistics. Professor Self is one of the worst professors I have ever had.
Professor Self clearly knows a lot about economics but he is not able to convey that information to students. The lectures are useless, but the textbook is interactive and very helpful. He is a generous grader with a nice curve. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives pop quizzes on random days. The class isn't difficult if you can teach yourself.
Dr. Self has some very impressive credentials. However, I did not have a good experience in his E370 class. Lectures were unclear. He expects specific answers and content for his projects, despite his instructions being ambiguous. Exams were a disaster for many, despite the relatively simple course content. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Overall awful teacher who does nothing but lectures the students. Homework is helpful, but you won't learn anything in the actual lectures.
Lectures are hard to follow and have little bearing on the tests/quizzes. Online text is everything, so take notes and try to learn from that. Really annoying voice, not engaging at all. Pop quizzes are given on material you have literally just covered and he won't give you any practice beforehand.
Lectures are awful, TA support basically does not exist, only one short office hours every week at a bad time, I'm not sure if the TA's have actually been trained for this class or not it feels like they are clueless. Pretty much no support for the material outside of class, canvas page is also a mess, and the homework takes hours every time.
He is not as bad as people on here are saying. They have probably not taken other STEM classes. He gives a formula sheet on the exams and if you take notes, go to class and do the homework, you're fine. There is a decent amount of homework and pop quizzes, but just pay attention and you will be fine. It is a STEM class, most of them are like this.
The professor cannot instruct the material required to pass the class. Everything you learn for this class is from the online textbook. The only reason to go to class is to do the pop quizzes and those are for a good portion of your grade. Don't recommend this professor for E251 under any circumstance.
He's a smart dude. A lot of the bad rating come because people don't care to understand economics. You're not learning rocket science, it is an intro class to micro or macro economics.
Self is a smart guy and sometimes his lectures come across as hard to understand, but if you apply yourself and ask questions you will be fine. The course can be tedious, but Self is helpful and makes it manageable. For all the people that left a one-star review for him, I guarantee didn't frequently show up for class or actively pay attention.
Honestly, he is boring to listen to. But, all necessary material is provided; you can succeed on your own. Weekly homework is time consuming, but Excel is helpful even if you can't use it on the exam. In-class quizzes about every other week are short and not that hard. If you can learn on your own or somehow pay attention to him, you'll be fine.
Self is a very generous grader. He always curves tests so if you have a B you will get an A. The final exam was hard, I got a D( 68)but he curved it to an A- (91).Weekly homework and random in class quizzes so attend every class. Key to excelling is reading the Revel, take very good notes, do practice sample questions, see the TA. You will be fine.
Awful teacher. He is a close-minded individual who's teaching style complements his worldview: shallow and tunnel-visioned. There were numerous typos per test, reflecting how much he cares about the education of his students. If you want easy credits, by all means take this class, but if you are looking for quality education, steer away from Self.
Terrible professor. The lectures did not help one bit, I learned entirely from the online textbook (which was very helpful). I went to all the lectures because he does pop quizzes, but did the homework in class. The tests were fair and not difficult if you study. Overall, bad professor but the class itself was not hard.
The teacher tends to not teach and when questions are asked he hits you with some sarcastic reply assuming you should know the correct answer.
Teaches in a format different from the book he is teaching out of. Spend many hours on homework each week. His tests differ from the way he teaches, encourages graphs and such but gives zero room to do so on exams. Makes it difficult to differentiate the 30+ different lines you HAVE to know to put on a graph. Abbreviates everything.
if you can, take any other prof for econ. dr self is not only annoying to listen to, but he doesn't teach anything tbh he is awful. if you have to take him, good luck
Professor Self made me feel bad for asking questions in class. He gave almost no explanation of the information on his slides, rather, he just described what was present on the screen. The course did not reflect a beginning-level micro course. Get used to Pearson, it's why I passed, but he expects about 7 hours a week on there plus weekly quizzes.
gives SO much busy work it's actually insane. by far had the most homework in this class than any of my others. belittles students whenever you ask a question. gives a lot of pop quizzes and tests are extremely hard. TAs are of absolutely no help.
I had him for Econ, and it was the worst class of my life. His lectures are painfully long and he just talks and talks. It was so hard to listen and pay attention to. He gives you online readings that will take a while to complete, but are the only things that teach you since he doesn't. There are pop quizzes, but they don't heavily impact grade.
He is overhated. Not the best but not the worst either. He gives out many short assignments to boost grades. He also does in class graded problems, but they are always on the topic he just talked about. The one thing I didn't like was using view em for grading, which is too rarely updated to be useful. His lectures are fine, but can be dull.
Self is over hated on here. If you are a solid student, you are going to do fine. His lectures can be dull at times, yes, but he can be very funny as well. Interesting concepts, libertarian view, actually learned a lot. He is very smart and brings up real world examples. Grading system is wack, only know overall course grade twice before final.
Professor Self's class is a mixed bag. The lectures can be dull, but he brings up interesting real-world examples. Lots of busy work, quizzes, and tough tests, so staying on top of the Pearson assignments and study prep with tools like unstuckstudy ai is key. Overall, a challenging class, but doable if you put in the work.
This is genuinely the worst class I have ever taken. The weeks leading up to the exam are hellish, as I work for hours to cram everything he's ever said in class, written in a presentation, or assigned in the textbook into my head only for none of that to even be on the exams. Dude legit has a fetish for watching people fail.
I don't know how this rating is so low. Clear about what you had to do and when it had to be done, lectures explained concepts in easy to understand ways, and overall a nice guy. 99% chance that the people giving out 1s here never showed up to class, didn't pay attention if they did, and didn't study or do any of the work (which wasn't much).
I would not recommend Dr. Self. To name a few issues: long, boring lectures; poor communication skills; condescending attitude; and lackluster teaching. His teaching style was not well-suited for introductory microeconomics. He also gave pop quizzes on content covered that day—unacceptable, IMO. Luckily, he gave generous curves on exams.
Random in class quizzes which kinda forces you to show up to class and pay attention. Teacher is chill and clearly explains what is asked of students to succeed in the class. Lecture heavy so he ovbsiouly talks a lot but he tries to make the class dynamic. The class itself isn't that hard.
Weekly online work was straightforward, and lectures reflected topics covered by the online textbook. Lectures were easy to follow and provided additional practice problems. The guided notes provided for each lecture were great for studying.
Professor Self isn't the greatest, but he gets a ton of hate on here. If you do your work and learn the material, you'll be just fine. Weekly assignments are not terribly grueling, and honestly relatively easy. He does his job, which is to lecture, but sometimes it can get boring. Do the work and you'll get an A.
When I missed exam 1 simply because I skipped class and was honest with him about the reason he allowed me to retake it. Very forgiving and an incredible professor
The class sucks and studying for exams, but the weekly work isn't bad and isn't much really. The concepts don't always make sense, but he curves the exams. He is really nice and cares about the subject and gets too much hate.
This class ended up being pretty good! The tests are hard, but curved generously. There's reading homework every week, but it's not difficult. Professor Self is helpful during office hours and not mean at all like some of the reviews have claimed. Show up to the lectures, work hard, and you'll get at least a B in this class.
Terrible professor, what is taught in class does not line up with what is on exams. I had over 97 pages of notes and reviewed and studied them then when test came I failed. Not to mention other friends in the class used the notes and failed aswell. Use the text book.
Homework is doable—about 2 hours with a week to finish—but quizzes and the final don't have anything that goes with the study guides he gives (my experience). Lectures are pretty boring, and attendance is tracked through random in-class assignments. Grades aren't updated on Canvas, and the class feels too exam-heavy for non-econ majors.
He's a nice guy but oh my days his lectures are so boring. His monotone robot-like voice puts me to sleep every class. He gives a lot of pop quizzes and homework is due every Friday. He also puts all his due dates at 10 pm, which is annoying. He tries to make this class interactive, but just talks the whole time.
Here's what you need to know. Yes, his lectures are super boring, he somehow has both an annoying and monotone voice. Yes, there is a lot of homework and readings you need to do. If you want to succeed, go to class especially because of the "Active Participation Quiz" (pop quizzes, basically). Curves tests massively, thanks to that I got an A.
Having taken AP econ, I was familiar with most of the concepts taught in class, but I feel Prof. Self did a wonderful job not only explaining but applying the theoretical concepts to everyday life. His class is very lecture-heavy, and the weekly Revel homework assignments did get monotonous, but the exams are heavily curved. Overall great class.
The rest of these reviews are not wrong. When taking this class I care most about my grade. My final grade was the most important to me. The class is for sure do able, however Professor Self is one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lack of motivation and effort towards students is unbearable. I hope the economics sector of IU fires him.
He is just not good at explaining things. Most of the knowledge you get comes from the textbook and online homework. The lecture is required, but most don't get much from it, as it feels like someone who obviously knows what they're talking about is just talking and talking, but you and everyone else have no idea what they are talking about.
Honestly, his lectures are super boring and hes very monotone, but he does pack a lot of good information in there. He gives an in class quiz once a week so attendance is basically required. Other than that, as long as you show up, do the homework, and put in a little bit of effort to study the class is VERY easy. He also curves tests by a LOT.
Yes his lectures are boring and attendance is taken by random quizzes. But do the reading assignments, like actually read them, and try to pay attention during lectures and you will be just fine. He makes everything clear and will explain why you got an answer wrong clearly. Grading isn't vvery harsh either.
Massively overhated. People who write bad reviews under his name are just those who don't pay attention during lectures, or the homework. Yes his lectures are boring, but you don't even need to show up to class if you pay attention to what the homework teaches you. Gives an insane curve on tests. People who rate him low are just salty.
Terrible class with even worse professor. going to the class can be very similar to losing your parents in a car accident. This class has ruined my life.
Some people keep flagging legit criticism over this teacher because he is “nice”. That should tell you enough about this class where students defend him just because of his personality rather than his teaching which you are paying him to do. Also tests are nothing like the study guides or graded class problems so have fun.
Everybody praises paying attention to his lectures- he talks in circles and goes off on long tangents that dont apply to class material. If you manage to tune out the fluff of the lectures, the fluff of the class powerpoint, and the fluff in the textbook, THEN you can piece together what will actually be asked on exams
Prof self puts the least amount of effort in teaching, there are constant errors in the practice questions and information in the lectures does not apply to the test. However, if you want an A in this class you can definitely do it. Just focus on the information on Pearson (textbook) and actually read and take notes on them. Just keep ur head up.
Avoid this professor at all costs, he is not very engaging and exams are weighted heavily. There is also little to no prep for exams. If you take econ with this professor just know your cooked.
