The most enthusiastic teacher I've ever had at Davis. He's funny, approachable, and makes class interesting. I suggest that everyone take this class, even if you have no interest in science. It's very informative and makes you think about things, like health and exercise, in a different light.
Dr. Shaffrath is the man! He not only is he extremely knowledgable in the field, he wants you to be extremely knowledgeable! He's not easy, but classes are so entertaining and engaging that you will want to do the work. If you get a chance, take his seminar or do the adult fitness program. He's a trip, for real!
Amazing professor! So intertaining and engaging! This class is so fun and easy because it relates so much to real life and the exercise you already do. NO WORK and NO READING! Take this course before you graduate!
Best teacher I've had all year! He is so interesting and even funny (for a professor) and never loses the students' attention. I highly recommend taking his class by the time you graduate.
the class was great. he was so enthusiastic about the material. he really loves what he does, and is very passionate. very energetic and entertaining during lecture. the only lecture that was hard/bad was the guest lecture! i highly recomend this class, and really recommend dr. shaffrath!!!
The 50 minutes just flies by when he's lecturing.
AWESOME PROF! Really intense and funny. Highly recommend any of his classes.
Amazing class. I'd recommend it to anyone no matter what their major is! You really dont want to miss out on the oppertunity to have a teacher so passionate about his work that it rubs off on the students. you never want to miss a class due to the fact that he always does something funny or interesting TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
What a crazy SOB. His lectures were quite confusing...lecture notes were all just random graphs and research data that we were expected to derive understanding from. Enthusiastic and funny, I'll give him that much. Test questions difficult, ambiguous, etc etc...
He teaches this with Paul Salisky. Both very good teachers. Just go to lectures and understand what they say. Very str8 forward. They make the class fun. Kept me interested and going to every class. First midterm was ez, but then they made the 2nd one hard. Overall, I would recommend these teachers.
Hands down one of the best professors at Davis. He teaches with such energy and enthusiasm, that you want to attend lecture each day. The class is interesting enough to make you not want to miss it. Both Dr. Salitsky and he are well experienced and pretty much answer everyone's questions in detail. Shaffrath is very helpful in office hours too.
I ABSOLUTLY LOVE THIS CLASS. THE PROFESSORS ARE GREAT AND LECTURES ARE GOOD TOO. I HAVE LEARNED MORE IN THIS CLASS THAN ANY OTHER. THIS CLASS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENED FOR ALL TYPES OF MAJORS AND PLUS BOTH PROF SALITSKY AND SHAFFRATH ARE SOO FUNNY!
SHAFFDOGG!!!!! This was an incredible class that I would recomend to anyone. Just go to lecture (dunno y u wouldnt such a good class) and you will do fine in the class. The 50 min. just flies by when this guy is up there lecturing. He is so freakin' funny too...i thought i was watching Dave Chappelle...lol k maybe not but still a great class!
TAKE EXB 10. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. : )
Shaffrath is an awesome professor. His enthusiasm for the subject pours out of him while he is lecturing. His sense of humor combined with great analogies make his lectures very memorable. He is always willing to help you outside of class and he makes an effort to get to know every student who approaches him with a question. Overall, a great class!
Shaffrath is awesome. You learn a lot in the class and he makes even the dullest subjects interesting. Easily one of the best teachers that I have ever had at UC Davis.
Shaffrath is a crazy guy, and a great prof. The thing with 104 is that you spend most of your time with the TA's in lab. The class takes a good amount of work, with an abstract due every week but the course is pretty awesome. Be a subject! You get bonus points and it's a cool experience, plus you get data on your own health and fitness.
This class is a must take for anyone.it is extremely relevant to the life of a student as far as health/exercise goes.Lectures are fun and easy to understand.Definitely not a hard class but it is better to go to lecture so you don't have to study as much for the exams.Shaffrath is hilarious and i recommend him without a doubt!
class is not as easy as people say, but it'll def get you at least a B. do well on midterms/finals because it's 30% 30% 40% repsectively. He will teach you A LOT about life and health. last question is usually a giveaway points, in which he tells you what the answer is. best class, but not an "EASY" class...
I would have to agree with the person below. I took this class with GPA boosting intentions and it was actually my worst grade! Lame. A B is really possible though, if you want an easy B. Second MT was significantly harder than MT1 and Final. Shaffrath is a nice man though and really personable in office hours.
Don't expect an easy class; if you want a good grade, you'll have to take this class seriously. Dr. Shaffrath's lectures were very clear and very entertaining. Be sure to buy the "book" they assign. The tests sometimes pick at the details, but they're otherwise fine. This is a class I would recommend to any student.
Shaffrath is and extremely knowledgeable professor. He thoroughly enjoys teaching the subject and invests a lot of time in making sure people understand the material presented. He's also very quirky and entertaining. Buy the copied manual for this course or you're screwed. Stay on top of the material and an A/B is very feasible.
I LOVE Dr. Shaffrath!!! He's by far my most favorite professor EVER! Not only does he make class interesting, he makes difficult concepts easier to grasp w/out taking away the challenge during his exams. He not only builds his lectures fr/ credible sources, but he is a VERY FAIR grader & knowledgeable about evrything! He is truly an admirable man!
Very fun teacher. Now if all professors were like him, college would be great.
he is hilarious!! Him and Salitsky make a great teaching pair together. He's very helpful at office hours. MT 1 & the Final are relatively easy. MT 2 IS THE HARDEST TEST I'VE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE! Overall the clas is fun and insightful and I got a B so you can do it too!
Small class (38 ppl). Labs even smaller and they are fun and you get to know people and the professor. This guy is a trip! Tests are sort of ambiguous though-know all the graphs! All his lectures are from graphs/experimental results and NO podcasting so you gotta go to class. But it's interesting. Better than EXB 112. Recommended!
This man is one of the best professor's i've had at UCD. He's a very funny and happy man. Sometimes it's a little too much but overall, he's great. Very clear in his explanations and extremely enthusiastic.
best class in the world! Take it! Shaffrath is the nicest teacher around. You learn a lot!! Too bad Salitsky teaches with him otherwise it would have been perfect. Tricky, All multiple choice questions on test.
Much better than sidekick Salitsky. Energetic, informative and very nice guy. The class is very broad/simple, so depending on your enthusiasm/experience you may find it either perfect or at times boring. Much of class is spent extolling the virtues of exercise at the expense of learning applicable ideas. Salitsky kills it, though. Total jerk.
Great teacher. The bright light at the end of the EXB 101 class. You really have to pay attention to his lectures because he pulls a lot of information from them. He's funny and verrry interactive with students in class and during office hours. LOL the dude remembers everyone's name
This class was definitely the "weeder" class and it definitely is difficult for those that want to switch into the EXB major. It is not an easy class. His midterms are multiple MULTIPLE choice, so you REALLY need to know your stuff to do well. He is really helpful outside of class and he remembers everyone's name. He's a great professors!
His lectures were the highlight of my Winter quarter. His enthusiasm makes his lectures both informative and extremely enjoyable. Attend all his lectures, take notes in your manual and study from them.
J. Shaffrath is hands down the best lecturer at this school, and most likely one of the top lecturers in the nation. 117 is a great class, very interesting, sometimes challenging but keep up with the lectures and readings, do well on the quizzes and you will do well in the class.
Very hard class in the raw volume of information that you must process/memorize and understand. Dr. Shaffrath's half of the class is the easier/ far more interesting half. Go to lecture, listen to his podcasts again while following with the reader, do the review questions and an A is possible. Tests are curved.
this is a very entertaining and fun class! but be prepared for the second midterm- it'll be tough (killed my grade in that class)!
This course is tough class. Its a combo of NPB 101, Bis 103, and others. Dr. Shaffrath's material is a little disorganized. Dr. Shaffrath is a great person and office hours are great. The midterms and final averages were: 75%. Tough course, good "curve" at the end. class needs more practice type questions. His questions are really tricky!!!!!
Excellent lecturer. His material was less interesting than Salitsky's but he presented it in an incredibly interesting way. Best class I've taken at U.C. Davis.
Makes class fun and interesting! i didn't need to go to lecture because lectures and podcasts were posted on smartsite...but i went anyway because he made it so enjoyable and interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Hand down the best lecturer at UCD. He loves the topic, is very knowledgable, and goes out of his way to make sure students understand. He expects a lot, but taking his class is worth it. EXB is lucky to have him!
The. Best. Makes the class hilarious and extremely interesting. Very enthusiastic. Imagine your best teacher/professor and this is him. If you're thinking of taking EXB10, do it.
I can write essays about him. HE IS THE BEST PROF. EVER. I loved his class. He was extremly funny. Dont underestimate his class though, it isnt very easy, but very informative, so I would take with HIM.
Dr. Shaffrath is the best lecturer at UC Davis. He made the material so interesting & entertaining that I'm actually looking into majoring in EXB & I don't even like science! The first midterm & final are fairly easy, the second midterm gets more in depth w/ science. Dr. Baar also taught about 1/3 of this class and he's HOT! I LOVED THIS CLASS!
Best professor on the face of this planet. Enthusiastic, entertaining, inspirational, brilliant, articulate, & an amazing lecturer. I could write essays on how awesome he is. I managed to take all but one of his classes, and loved them all. Extremely helpful in office hours. He could make any subject interesting, and UCD/EXB is blessed to have him.
Shaffrath is such an amazing man. He's funny and whimsical and has stayed fit his entire life. Everything he talks about is completely clear and he's just a great person. Definitely one of the best professors ever. Take him at least once. You won't regret it
Dr. Shaffrath is great, clear, nice, funny helpful! Go to his office hours. I encourage you to take 111 instead 112, 112 is hard the lab is the only easy part. He teach this with Dr. Harris and she's useless!!
Dr. Shaffrath is such an amazing teacher. He's energetic, enthusiastic and intelligent. He is entertaining and relates his knowledge through experience and examples. He is so helpful during office hours! His exams are fair and not tough. Still taking this class but wanted to share for other interest students!
If you are signing up for EXB-111, you have already taken Shaffrath in 101 and you know he is one of the best professors at UCD. He is clear, energetic, and challenging. EXB-111 is the best class to take to fill this requirement because it is so applicable. 1 presentation, 1 lab report, 1 midterm, 1 non-cummlative final. Challenging and fun!
This guy's awesome!
Great Professor! He absolutely loves the subject and enthusiastically teaches and is obviously very knowledgeable! Highly recommended to take his exb 10 class. This class made me want look into exb as a major. He teaches with Dr. Baar, who on the other hand is not the same kind of lecturer..definitely more challenging for me at least (testing-wise).
James Shaffrath is the best professor I have ever met. EXB 10 is the best class I have ever taken at UC Davis. The material is interesting, and Shaffrath knows how to present it. GO to office hours. He is one of the most interesting people you need to meet. The exams aren't hard if you prepare. The TAs review sessions were very helpful.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER
Amazing professor. need to work your butt off for a B. Great sense of humor. passionate professor about educating his students. takes the time to know his students. he is one of the reasons i love the EXB major (also good looking ppl in EXB major makes all classes fun). 112 offers profound cardiac background if thinking about med/PA/nursing school
amazing professor. truly cares about his students, grades fairly, lectures are hilarious yet educational. TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is the best! He's so funny and makes lecture super interesting! Even though there are podcasts I still actually go to class because he's hilarious! The only professor I've ever REALLY liked at Davis. There is no textbook for this class also.
This class was awesome! The professor has to be one of the best at UCD - he is funny and makes the class interesting. With him, the sixty minutes go by quick. He is also extremely helpful by creating office hours before exams. I would recommend this class to anyone. He posts all his notes online and even provides study-guides for the exams.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had!! His tests are tough, you really need to know the material to do well, but they are definitely fair.
Not an easy GE class, but the professor is very passionate about what he teaches.
TAKE EXB10!!! It was my absolute favorite class. Shaffrath is the best-I've saved all his podcasts and listen to them over and over. He taught with Baar, who was kind of confusing but really knowledgeable. Go to class, put a little effort in and you will get an A. AWESOME CLASS!!!
He's a little quirky so takes a minute to get used to him, otherwise his lec. are always entertaining. Clearly explains the lectures. Very intelligent guy. Does make tests confusing and difficult on purpose. Reading is supplementary to the lec. Prof. Bodine taught part of the class as well.
Such an interesting teacher! and he is so passionate about it! favorite class by far!
A truly passionate lecturer who cares about his students and in the material he teaches.
No textbook which is nice but difficult if you want clarity on the subject. No assignment or homework. Two midterm and a final exam. First midterm was easy. Second midterm mean was 67. No Curve. Fun class, pay attention, test are tricky.
He is AWESOME!! Everything about Dr.S is AWESOME do not hesitate for a second to take any of his classes. IF you are on rate my professor you are wasting your time and I am here to tell you to stop wasting your time you will LOVE his classes and they are presented in a way that makes them very easy to understand!! pay attention and get an A.
Great professor! His lectures were very interesting and easy to follow. He is very personable and is really passionate about the material he teaches. He also made the tests very fair. Just study the lecture slides and his outlines and you will do well. I highly recommend him!
Truly a great teacher. An excellent help in office hours and will easily clarify any possible question that you may have. The class was truly not a tricky class. If you study what he presents, attend lecture and just put in the work necessary to succeed (like with all classes), an A is easily achievable. If you get an opportunity, take this course.
easy class. The first half is mostly common knowledge the deco half requires more memorization, but still easy. He is a good teacher a little spastic though
Shaffrath is the best professor I have had to UCD! He gives you so much material to succeed, but his Powerpoints require you to either attend class or follow along with the podcast to know what their relevance is. He is passionate about teacher, exercise biology and this shines through with his fun lectures. JDS FTW!
FAVORITE CLASS OF THE QUARTER. Favorite Professor of my college career. Interested in exercise or living longer and becoming healthier? No, well you should be! Take this class! I loved it and I'm not big on exercise. You will learn a lot and enjoy it the entire time. Loved Shaffrath almost as much as he loves his military grade laser pointer!
Anyone who does not take this class is missing out. I completely adored this class, and I feel like it could really change a person's perspective on their lifestyle. Best class ever, first exam is easy, second one is a much harder in comparison, and the final is on the easier side of the spectrum.
I TAed this class for Dr. Shaffrath and would like to compliment his knowledge of EXB and his dedication to the health, well-being, and intellectual growth of his students.
He's an amazing Professor!!! He loves his students and always tries to help you when you go to office hours!! He's SUPER NICE!!! He's really funny during office hours and lecture. I really liked his class. Even though I'm not a science major I still really enjoyed the bio stuff. He made exercise and biology really interesting! RECOMMEND!
Most reviews are for EXB10 (!!). Wont deny that Shaf is a very knowledgeable man but he throws info at you at a horribly quick pace. Class structure is a bit disorganized & lectures are full of graphs & diagrams that can be hard to understand. Very tricky multiple MULTIPLE choice. Class combines layers of NPB 101, NPB 113, BIS 102103, NUT concepts
Dr. Shaffrath is a wonderful lecturer and human being! His lectures are packed with enthusiasm, hilarity, and knowledge. He's very quirky but definitely knows his stuff. This class is inspirational and motivational; the material is good to know for your own health & life! I can't put into words how awesome Shaffrath is, sign up & see for yourself!
He's one of the greatest professors here- he really cares about his students and wants to help everyone succeed. He's funny and interesting in lecture. I would definitely suggest this class as an easy GE that's relevant to life in general. The only graded things are two midterms and a final that are all multiple choice.
Dr. Shaffrath.... Hilarious, gets to the point, respects his students, and is respected by the students. EXB10 is about how to live a long, healthy life. JUST TAKE THE CLASS. You will be bragging about your newly acquired knowledge from EXB10 for years. Do yourself a favor, get off your lazy a** and take an awesome cla**.
He is a very interesting professor with so much energy and enthusiasm for the subject. I would definitely recommend taking this course because it is probably one of the greatest classes you'll ever take at Davis.
Professor Shaffrath is an incredible human being and an even better professor. His lectures are passionate, hilarious, and full of energy. I would recommend this class to anyone! Favorite class thus far at Davis. Go to class, take notes, and you will pass with most likely a B or an A.
All tests are multiple choice with ample time to finish. Do the online readings because there is no textbook. I loved this class because I was interested and engaged. I would love to take again.
Awesome teacher! Dr Shaffrath is clear, genuinely cares, and super funny. Going to class is enjoyable.
Professor Shaffrath is AWESOME. He's an M.D., so he obviously knows his stuff. He's an incredibly energetic, engaging, and enthusiastic prof. He really works to apply what he's teaching to everyday life. His tests are tough, and you'll definitely have to study, but you will learn like hell.
Dr. Shaffrath is an AMAZING professor. Very smart, very funny, very understanding when it comes to his students. EXB10 is a class for non-majors (so it's easy), but if you value health & fitness, take this class for your own personal benefit. All slides & podcasts are posted online, but GO TO CLASS to experience Dr. JDS' entertaining lectures!!!!
I always look forward to his lectures as he is so funny and will catch your attention. His lectures are very clear, but if you are ever unclear about anything, he is very easily approachable either after class or in his office hours. He offers study guides which really help and his tests are short, which eliminates a time restraint!
Dr. Shaffrath is an extremely good teacher and an even better lecturer. He is knowledgeable and approachable to people from all majors. Class is very engaging and entertaining. the tests are tough but not hard to do well on. If you want a class that is enjoyable even if health is not your interest, this the the class/teacher for you
Dr. Shaffrath is amazing and super funny. The material isn't hard to understand as long as you go to lecture. Tests are easy mostly common sense. Very fun class would recommend to anyone who likes knowing about exercise. I am a freshman and I thought it was a very easy going fun class. Go to office hours it helps clear up ideas.
Dr. Shaffrath is arguably 1 of the best profs I've ever had at UCD. He's not only a great teacher, but really cares about his students and takes the time to get to know you. MC tests. 2 MT & 1 Final. No curve b/c avg was in the high 70s. make sure u take bis103 1st cuz 1/4 of the class is metabolism. VERY rewarding class.
A very enthusiastic professor! He really cares about his students and wants them to do well in his class. His lectures were never boring and kept me awake at 9 in the morning. His test questions weren't too difficult, and he provides great feedback with any questions you have. Definitely recommend taking this class with him!
He is so funny and entertaining, he makes class fun to go to. Him and Bodine genuinely cares about their students, they're so kind. 60% midterm (30% each) and 40% final. The MC test aren't too bad, just make sure you read all the choices because it can be tricky! Theres no "curve" but they do adjust grade cutoffs to get an B- to B class average.
Shaffrath is the man! He's the best professor I've ever had. He is so animated and gives really good explanations. This was definitely one of my favorite classes and overall pretty easy. The tests aren't bad, but require you to really logic your way through them. Don't get the book. Go to office hours!
I was surprised with how difficult this class was for me. He goes off topic a lot, and i didn't really understand what i was supposed to be getting out of the lecture. maybe i could be tried harder, this class just wasn't for me.
One of the best teachers, cares about all of his students. A must take class and a very easy GE if at all interested in the topic! ShaffyGOAT
my favorite professor at UC Davis ! he is so compassionate and caring. He makes himself very accessible to students. The class is very interesting and engaging. Tests can be tricky because of their format, but if you go to office hours to cover the study guide you should be fine.
Was one of three lecturers. Feel like his sense of humor was underappreciated by our class. His lectures were very frank and insightful. Questions on the test weren't too hard. Gained a new perspective on health, exercise, and aging.
Probably one of the best lecturers that I will ever have in my college career. The man is a pure gem! Has a great sense of humor and keeps you engaged for the whole lecture. He will definitively teach and inspire you on living your life from a new perspective. Exams were not a walk in a park though. Questions were ambiguous. Just attend class!
Most practical course I took in my undergraduate career, taught by the most equipped teacher. Shaffrath is extremely knowledgable in the subject matter & his teaching is refreshing. Very clear with his expectations. You will never have a boring day in his class. Passionate & genuinely cares about all his students! 10/10 recommend
His tests are straightforward and he will always try to accommodate for extra office hour times. Lectures are always entertaining and goes off of pictures instead of words. Participation not needed and there's no iClicker involved.
Dr. Shaffrath is the best professor I've had. He makes class so interesting and fun with his jokes. I actually looked forward to coming to class everyday. Only 3 tests that make up your entire grade, but he is very approachable. He seems to actually care about his students. May this man live until he's 100 and more.
Dr. Shaffrath is one of the most caring, available and helpful professor ever known. It's an amazing feeling knowing you have one professor that you can truly trust and bring your confidence up (course and self-empowerment wise). Dr. Shaffrath keeps the class interesting and exciting, one of the few professors I was excited to talk to in OH!
Dr. James Shaffrath simply amazing, He has had a great influence and impact in my life "One clue best soccer player at Rio Americano"
I love this man so much but not going to lie I had to study hard for this class. I took this class as a GE thinking it would be easy but science isn't my strongest topic so I didn't do as well as I thought I could. I do love his personality and his kindness towards his students. You can tell he truly cares!! I would still take him if you can!
