This is the hardest you'll ever be forced to work for two measly credits. The grading is intentionally hard. If you have questions, only go to Jimmy if you really have a good general understanding of the topic because he WILL be annoyed if you can't answer questions about your question. Have him edit your methods sections and GO TO THE SEMINARS.

Attending all lectures is essential. He doesn't post lectures online. Bring pre-labs questions to lectures! Straightforward grade rubric for the scientific papers. Check everything on his guideline, you'll get a high grade. Don't turn it in late! I would've got an A in the class had I turned the 1st paper on time. Go to office hours!

BIOL20L should not be a hard course. It is the first time that many students have been in a lab at all, and should be taught with that in mind. That being said, this class wasn't hard, it was an incredibly frustrating exercise in jumping through hoops. Expectations weren't clear, lectures were unhelpful, and was difficult to improve performance.

He is one of the rudest professors I have ever met at UC Santa Cruz. He reads of his slides and you're basically told off or get no response if you email him with any questions. He also made it clear that if we didn't have access to internet that we shouldn't be taking this class. He doesn't do much and expects students to learn on their own.

Lectures often have false facts that he claims are true, doesn't give a guidelines on what's graded, insane grader, rude person when asking questions. He will publicly embarrass you for asking questions so be aware of that. I would say the only way to get an A is to attended every office hour and ask exactly what he's looking for on lab reports.

Definitely a tough course for 2 credits as everyone else is saying. Still very manageable however, just gotta stay on top of assignments by starting ahead of time. He's a genuinely good guy. If you want a future in the field or need general advice, go talk to him in his office hours. His advice helped me find my first internship within 2 weeks.

I am currently enrolled in his BIO 20L course and am extremely disappointed with the level of education I am receiving. He is extremely rude when one asks a question and is also an extremely tough grader. He allows his students to make allusive attempts on the projcets and reports, as there is no rubric, and gives a terrible grade in reply.

Dont raise your hand in class if you arent 100% sure of your answer. Otherwise he might criticize you for being wrong. A lot of his grading is random with no clear guidelines which means that if you cant read his mind, you are not going to get full points except on presentations (the only time he doesn't show up to class)

LOVE THIS CLASS! Yes, he is really difficult and the class should NOT be this hard considering it is 2 credits. But honestly I learned so much. As long as you put in good work you will do fine. It is a LOT of work beware. I really love Jimmy and he is super passionate and caring. Even though he can seem scary, he really is a sweet guy who cares.

Found his class to be easy and his expectations clear. He told us EXACTLY what to include in lab reports and I got good grades as long as I did just that. The midterm is literally some basic C1V1=C2V2 algebra and converting units. He really cares about his students success, so he can be harsh and press certain things that are important.

Either my TA sucked or the actual professor was too harsh but for a 2 credit lab course there is way too much work. Projects or lab reports are due every week, and strict lab notebook checks. And don't get me started on the fact that this lab has a final and some quizzes some weeks.

His class was not hard or anything, it was doable, but objectively, he is not nice. Very egotistical and bordered on rude interacting with students. His class entails a lot of work for a two credit lab, but the real issue is just how mean he is, and it just seems like he wants to hear himself talk. This sort of attitude makes him a bad prof.

When I took this lab there was only 1 exam and 1 presentation. I believe he now has 2 exams and 2 presentations. I got lucky having a TA who was pretty chill. The prof was also pretty rude to some students. This class kinda turned me off of pursuing research, until I took Bio101L and loved it. I'd recommend going with the other prof if you can.

Unfortunately, this professor often went on unrelated tangents about his personal life, which disrupted learning. His frustration with his career created a negative environment. I hope future students experience a more respectful and supportive classroom

After taking this class, I was surprised to see many overly positive reviews. Based on my experience, I suspect some may not be genuine. Just sharing my honest experience approach his class with caution. He lacks structure both in his teaching and personal conduct, which makes his class feel unpredictable and, unfortunately, difficult to follow.

Shanks is downright degrading and seemingly not passionate for his profession. The class is unstructured and professor/TA's are eager to take points off assignments for literally everything. My advice? Don't take his class and wait until another professor is offering this course.

Professor Shanks is really passionate about the material and does a really good job simplifying the complexities of MCD bio for people who have never seen it before. I am a bio major but I think with a little effort this could be understood and enjoyed by non stem students. super interesting class, I look forward to lecture and hw.

He was very enthusiastic about the subjects he was discussing and was always willing to go back over any topics needed. Professor Shanks assigned lots of readings but always gave us ample time (up until the midterm/final) to do them and would give us reminders. When I had a family emergency, he was incredibly accommodating, rescheduling my midterm.

If you like a class that uses a clear rubric system where you know exactly what you will be graded on then this will not be a good professor for you. Jimmy comes in with good intentions to challenge students and show them what the real world will look like, but he does it in a discouraging way. Did not hold kindness in his heart
