This Professor really knows philosophy. He dealt with every question from the actual philosophy things to astrology and things that had nothing to do with the class. He is really fair and nice.
I was going to drop the class in the beginning, it started at 8am, but one look at him and I would be dumb to drop it, the way he taught was amazing, and he explained everything in detail, I was never in the dark, he is by far the best teacher I have had so far in my college experiance.
Gives easy homework. Test are easy. Mainly based on homework and book dvd.
He is really laid back...he tells these ridiculous funny stories of his life and it's great, especially when you don't even want to be there that early in the morning (8am). He teaches in depth and he'll repeat and answer any questions you might have...HW is VERY easy and so are the tests. Take him for Philo 6!!
This class was fun! Teaches how to write papers. Class not too hard. I am going to take his other classes too.
He'll keep you interested the whole time with his lectures. He's funny and knows how to keep students interested. Tests are based on essays...2-3 essays per test(only a page each to two). Teaches you how to do them correctly and even gives you the questions to the test a week before them. I'd deffinetly take him again.
james is my boy. he relates philosophy to his personal life through amusing stories in order to get across the main ideas. my advice is to take his class and show up every day. he couldnt possibly make the class any better than he already does.
took his class for honors during fall, was totally creeped out until like the last couple of weeks. he knows the subject really well but some of his life details he talked about were a bit odd...anyway, i feel like everything i wrote sucked but he was totally cool and gave me a B, so ya take his class. and yes, he is totally HOTT! =]
it's funny, he tries to look like a hardass in the first meeting but after that hes not at all. he's cute in a nerdy way. very cute sense of humor. he's um.. not necessarily *that* great with philosophy, but who cares, right? does anyone REALLY take this class to learn philosophy? lets be real. he gives study guides, tests are easy, and he's funny.
awesome. tells you great stories about his life that actually relate to class. he seems a little angry, but when you go into the class and actually talk to him, he is very, very nice. he really wants you to do well and understand.
he is really cool...he is an interesting guy....you may get scared from him at the beginning he makes the class seem hard...but he is a fun teacher and he makes the class fun....you have to write two major papers and journals -that are easy to do ....and one more smaller paper....its not that bad...AND HE IS COOOOLLLLL...AND VERY VERY SMART...
AMAZING TEACHER! I'm taking him next semester for Phil 5. He makes it SO clear how to get an A. No homework, just journals that are due on test dates. Tests are just 2 essays, very easy & he goes over EXACTLY what he wants. Great discussion. Everybody should take him!
Second time taking Singer, just as fun as before. Tests are super, super easy. However some people just can't grasp the concept. 3 tests and 1 final. 8 in-class essays in total. Fun discussions, tells you great stories about his life. His morning classes are fun because he is always a little out of it. He is very nice and very smart.
he honestly scared me with all his crazy stories. He seemed pretty angry a lot of the time, and i think he turned what could have been a very interesting class into a complete headache by being so picky about the papers he had the class write. He was OK, but there probably are nicer philosophy professors at pierce..
Best class ever. Some people want an old professor. If that is you do not take this prof. young and cool. Not jaded. Moody but not jaded. What prof. is not moody anyway? class is easy if you pay attention. the people who do bad are just morons because the teacher tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A.
He is a rally down to earth teacher. An easy "A" as long as you follow his outline. There is only a midterm and a final. He will also make you write a cultural happening essay which is pretty easy. For those student who are afriad of philosophy just take his clas.
He is a really chill professor. He was a student himself just about a year ago so he knows and understands "student life". When you take his tests he basically just wants to know if you have a full understanding of what he's lecturing on and what you're reading. Recommended.
the other review said that prof.singer is moody. this is true but he is not mean and he cares about his students. his class is flexible to the class and he changes the class to the students.i had him twice now and both classes were differet in regards to the different students but the class was good and i love this prof.i would take all his clases.
prof singer is not one of but the best teacher you will ever come across. he should have a waiting list to get into his class. he remembers what it's like to be a student and he helps as much as he can. I wish he taught all of my classes! YAY FOR TACOS!!!!
If you want to have a cute indy rock boy teach you logic take his class. I had to take this for a lower div. req. to transfer and I was not happy about that but Dr. Singer is very cool, a little nervous about lecturing but knows logic better than the book. I am currently taking his phil 1 because he was so good and this class is great too. I<3 him!
You are lucky that Singer is teaching at the JC level and that is taking time to explain things much less talk to you. I asked him why he was teaching JC and he said it was a political choice. He is way ahead of other JC profs and understands phil deeper than other profs. even at the school I transfered to (UCB). Singer will be famous some day!!!!!
Great teacher. I liked all of my classes and teachers this semester, but Mr. Singer was the best one and the only one I never got bored of. The amount of work he assigns is easy. His Phil 5 honors class is graded only through three essays (one 3-5 page, one 4-6 page, and a 6-10 page cumulative paper) but he's not as easy a grader as you might thin
DO NOT MISS THE CHANCE OF TAKING A CLASS WITH SINGER !!! He is one of the best professors I have ever had (and believe me I've had plenty). You feel like he is one of your friends just smarter. I lovedddddddd going to his class just to listen to the stories he tells. He makes you LOVE writing papers and philosophy.
Professor Singer is a wonderful teacher. He is incredibly smart, quite funny, and his lectures are very entertaining. I did not want to miss his class all semester because I actually enjoyed being there. He actually teaches you how to write a UC level MLA style paper, which is something not many other professors at Pierce do. Highly recommended!
Awesome!!! Singer is Awesome!!!at first he seems like this snotty know it all.. but he wasn't..even creepier..His nerdiness made him super hot!! he kept on referencing all these movies I was ashamed to admit that I have watched..lol..so yeah.. and his lectures where super..although he seems to have a weird obsession with TACOS..lol.
AWESOME!!!!!
Singer is MAGNIFICENT!!! He is a marvel of a man. There is no other teacher on the face of the earth that can compare to him. Everyone else, PALES in comparison. I had the time of my life in this class. It made me open my eyes to philosphy and change my major. Everytime we had a verbal exchange. I had an ORGASM.
BEST YOU WILL FIND! even if you're not into phil, TAKE IT WITH HIM! he is HILARIOUS! I would go just for the laughs. He is young, light headed, listens, laughs, cares, cool, cute jewish boy, skater look, cute smile. HE IS LIKE ONE OF US! I loved him and best of all, gives the questions prior to test, so you cant fail even if you're dumb.TAKE HIM!<3
He really wants to help you out. Sometimes he tells the same stories, but they're still funny! He may look a little mad, but he is totally willing to help you out. He may seem chill, like you can just have fun in class, but be respectful. In honors classes, not an easy grader. He'll challenge you, he can tell when you're slacking. He's awesome!
he is one of the most interesting teachers you could ever have. he relates things comically to philosophy. hes young and feels more like a peer sometimes so you don't feel at all like you're below him. read his comments on your test to improve, he won't lie to you if you're not doing 100%. he loves tacos, and he was down with my mustache party. :)
Puts philosophy into understandable terms and teaches you to do the same. Very enjoyable as a professor. Sees himself as equal and has a huge amount of empathy for being a student. He tells you exactly what the test essays will be on so just follow his direction. Funny man but still keeps his student/teacher boundries. Enjoyable & recommended.
are you joking? this teacher confuse you like never before with all his weird stories that got nothing to do with the subject and then he expects the students to write an essay on the exam talking bout the subject. Trust me dont take his class, ull regret it.
He's so nice and chill. He tells you funny life stories and relates them to philosophy.Trust me I'm not much of a philosophy person, but he makes it interesting even to me.He tells you ahead of time what's on the tests so you have time to prepare. Each test consists of 2-3 1pg essays. Great teacher who really wants you to do well. Highly recommended!
I truly appreciate what this teacher has to offer. He's so intelligent and knowledgeable. He has really opened my eyes to a lot of things that I had never considered or thought about. He teaches you to think critically about the world. On top of that, he's very funny and interesting. Great teacher overall :)
He's sooo cool. Everyone who is even thinking of taking him just should! No tests, only two papers and he helps you out. TAKE HIM!
Prof S. is nice, funny, and cares about his students. He is going to teach you how to write papers. Also, he is trying to put philosophy in understandable terms, but sometimes it is more confusing. Maybe that's just me: I am no philosophy major but science. I think that he needs to improve his lectures a little. However, RECOMMENDED. Thank you
this guy is the best!! hes funny and makes the class super easy!! kinda rubbed me the wrong way at first, but hes actually really awesome. tells u EXACTLY what will be on the tests so do the HW and read the text and youll do perfect
He is definitely not an easy grader, but he's always willing to help the students. He's also clear on what he wants on the paper. Reading is required in order to write the paper. I would say that A is possible with this guy if you are willing to work super hard. Attendance is recommended cause his jokes are funny
He taught me how to write philosophy papers. I owe it to him that as a Philosophy major at a university I am doing so well. READ, DO "mock test" at home on blue books, MEMORIZE your arguments, come to class and put them down. Awesome guy.
Prof Singer is a student centered instructor who is highly relevant and certainly UC caliber. He teaches with an informal but incredibly effective method that rivals just about any UD Philosophy Prof here at Berkeley in overall quality. Law/English/Phil students would be wise to take all his classes before he moves up, way up! A++++++++++++++++++++
Probably the fairest professor ever. Tells you exactly what the tests will be on and reviews like crazy before each of them. Each test is usually two short-answer essays with two parts, explain and assess. He's really funny too and has the weirdest but most entertaining stories. I'd recommend him to anybody, he's awesome :]
His honors section requires you to think and write quality essays, so expect to work hard for your grade. He cares enough to whip you into shape so that you will do well at a UC. He jokes while lecturing to hold our attention, and he will definitely help you if you ask him. Take him if you want to actually learn something. Great professor.
If you are the type of person who wants a challenge and wants to learn how to write a paper, take this class and thank the universe for Professor Singer. He is incredible!
Other profs. are mostly liberals where if you agree with them in a political class, they will give you an A but if you are a republican like me, you will get a B even if you do the same work. Prof. Singer is not this way. He will give a strong leftist argument and then give an equally strong rightist argument, which makes you think. GREAT PROF!!!
Take him. He's excellent. Philosophy isn't too hard to understand, and if you're having an issue, he is very good at helping. Attendance is mandatory, and his class isn't too exciting, but he's still cool to listen to. He may make the class seem hard at times, but everything is very straight forward. Ps. tacos rule
honors section. hes not the easiest grader but that's only because hes preparing u for ucla. there was a 4-6 paper, 8-10, and 6-8. no tests. attendance counts. he really knows his stuff and prepares u really well and hes funny too. if i can get an A then anyone can. just make sure you prepare for the readings and write a quality paper.
I don't know why there are such RAVE reviews about him. He's pompus and rude. I took his honor's class and didn't learn anything about philosphy just about his friends lives and tacos. Waste of my time at Pierce. DID NOT PREPARE ME FOR A UC. I got in the B in the class and that was through the help of others def not him.
All this man talked about was his Buddhist friend, stoner friend, lawyer cousin and god knows what else. I learned very little about philosophy, and my current knowledge of philosophy is what helped my way to a B, not his teaching. I wouldn't recommend this professor, even if you are very well-versed in phil. Painful class.
entertaining and interesting, this professor is probably the most fun i've had or will ever have taking a serious college course. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended
Don't trust the comments bashing Singer, they're probably from people who really struggled in the class due to poor study skills, lack of interest, and the expectation for him to hand them an A without any effort. Singer is a really good professor; do the reading, participate in class, ask him questions if you need help and you should do fine. He explains concepts using analogies. I got an A in the class but it wasn't easy, I had to work for it; this is college after all.
He's probably one of my favorite people ever. I've taken two of his classes and I'd totally take another one, but I don't want him to start thinking I'm stalking him. Although I'm sure I wouldn't be the first.
There are a few cry babies on here that got all hurt because Prof. Singer didn't cave in to their begging to give them an A so the only thing they can do is dis him on RMP but Prof. Singer is the best prof. ever because he doesn't pander to annoying students and he totally stands up to the whiners.
Definitely best professor i've taken so far. He's really preparing us for UCLA. Since he was a transfer student himself, he knows what to focus on with community college students. I can see my Papers have improved since class started! He's a tough grader, but if you need help, he'll be there that's for sure! Ooh, and he's pretty damn hot<3 ;)
I find it quite hilarious how he rates himself here. He is probably without a doubt one of the worst professors I took in my entire life so far! it is very difficult to understand what he is teaching and his stories have nothing to do with what we discuss about in the class, besides the fact that they are interesting and funny but I dont recommend
Read the material and you'll probably understand the examples he gives. If not, just ask him how the examples relate to the material. I always used to him stuff and he always helped...take advantage of that
if u read the material before class, everything professor singer says makes sense. if u dont read, then nothing in this class makes sense. I had to listen to these whiny chicks in class crying about how confoosing this class was all semester but these dumb broads didn't even read. duh. he even goes over the text in relation to what hes saying.
Easy professor. Basically composed of four to five exams that include the final. He grades fairly, but tough. He outlines what the exams will cover exactly, and at least a week in advance. Highly knowledgeable. Take home when if you want to learn philosophy. Also, he talks about himself and his life experiences a lot. And I mean a lot.
Chill professor, lot of stories, lot of examples, take notes. He spoon feeds you how to write a University level paper which was the best thing a professor can do. Spends a lot of time explaining, his jokes are good. I took this class instead of taking English 102 for critical thinking. NO English 102 teaching prof. can be compared to him! THE BEST
Best professor you can get! Knows what he's talking about and understands us completely. tests are really easy, based on the readings and discussions in class. He's really cute and funny!!! Take him and you will not regret it! :)
Best teacher I have ever had at Pierce! His test are all essay format, but he gives you the essay ahead of time so you can properly prepare for the exam!He is extremely intelligent and knows his subject well! I am pleased with the class! Worth every penny! He also is hilarious! take him!!!!
I took his honors class, we had 3 essays, that's it. He really spends time going over how to write well. It is not impossible to get an A but you have to work really hard. You have 3 shots to get your writing perfect so it is difficult.
3 essays and you're done! Would recommend his class over eng 102 anyday! He's very funny and chill. Understand students from CC cause he's been there. Got an A. Need the book, and go to class. He is hilarious!
Extremely helpful!! Explains exactly what you need to and what he is asking for!! Participation will get you a better grade. He allows the class to openly discuss ANYTHING as long as it's on top which allows the students to better understand the material. I had him for Phil 5, received a B and Phil 6, received an A. In my top 3 best professors!
He's the funniest guy ever. He understands that we can read the textbook for a definition sort of explanation of the concepts, so instead he tells us hilarious stories that relate to the philosophy. 3 essays for the exams, questions given beforehand. Highly recommended! Prof Singer is the best :')
People who get As say Dr. singer is great and people who get lower grades hate on him. This class is not like calc or anything. All you have to do is read the readings. Then singer goes over the book and tries to spark real life conversations about the readings. before each test he reviews AND tells you what is on the test. What is hard about that?
If you're even remotely a philosophical thinker this class should be easy. Your entire grade relies on 3 papers spread out across the semester. PHIL 5 is a writing class above all so college level writing is expected, but the prof. clearly outlines the structure so all you need to focus on is regurgitating the material and your understanding of it.
BEST PROFESSOR AT PIERCE COLLEGE. Your entire grade is based on writing on the readings - attend class, participate, write college level papers and you will be fine. If possible speak with him on a personal level after / before classes, he will help you with anything you need. He basically set me up with my internship at UCLA Medical Center. PROPS!
He's a great professor who loves his job and cars. He explains the material with many explains and stories, which highlight every class I attended.
Professor SInger is so amazing! I took his class in Fall 2013 and it was honestly my favorite class at Pierce College. He is extremely good looking, intelligible, deep, hilarious, and every other positive adjective out there. He tells you what to study for on the test and his lectures were extremely interesting. I would definitely recommend him :).
Prof SInger's lectures are the most interesting I've ever attended. You will need to read over the book (ie each phillosopher's theory). He gives examples of each theory by using personal stories (which are really funny usually) to make it easier to understand from a modern perspective. This class will really make you contemplate life. Awesome!
he's really cute. you NEED the book to pass, almost half of the questions on the exam are directly from the homework. just do the reading, do the homework, and you'll do fine
Professor Singer is one of best teachers in Pierce. His lectures were always fun to listen to, he gives numerous story-based examples for better understanding of a topic. The exams were very clear, just read the chapter, LISTEN to instructions, and A is guaranteed. Hope to take him again.
Dr. Singer is the best professor I have had in college. It is a travesty that he is not a full time professor at Pierce College. This class really changed my entire perspective on things.
Took him for winter and he was very easy going. definitely recommend, easy A. he's young and relates well with students and tells you whats gonna be on the test. textbook is online as a pdf just google the textbook name
I had winter class with Professor Singer. His class is really good and he is very clear. There is no guessing with what is going to be on the exam or where you stand in the class. He is also very attractive and has really cute style. I think he is the best professor I have had at Pierce College.
Professor Singer has changed my perspective on life in many ways. His lectures make you think about real life issues and ways you can improve it through philosophy. His examples always have the class cracking up. His tests are moderate and you will pass if you follow his rubric! Wish he taught more classes at pierce. Definitely take this class!
best professor i've had. if u read and keep up + prepare 4 tests, class is straight forward. if u read the syllabus, you can see how 2 calculate ur grade + when stuff is happening/due. singer reviews before the test alot. + i love his style. easy to pay attention to such a cute prof. also funny, so lectures aren't just boring slideshows.
Very funny, cute, and sassy prof! His tests are all essays and are very straightforward. He tells the class everything that is going to be on the test, so you can write your essays at home. The challenge is with his grading. He grades at the UC level, and he really knows what he's talking about. Very credible and knowledgeable in his field.
Prof Singer is truly funny and inspirational. You won't get bored in his class. There are 4 in class essays (super short) and one paper. Books are needed to study for tests. He explains everything in detail and replies to emails as well.
Professor Singer is absolutely hilarious. He's very clear on what he expects, outlines exactly what he wants for tests and papers. I took the honors section, and it was my least stressful class, even though I learned the most. TAKE HIM!!
I really appreciate that Prof Singer doesn't give in to problem students. Singer doesn't give people who make up bs excuses makeup exams and he doesn't tolerate people who come late or whine. Profs that give makeups give bad students unfair advantage. As a student, I see these bad students bragging about tricking professors. Not singer tho.
Sometimes I get sad that every student in class isn't as excited about philosophy as me. I'm majoring in phil. because of Prof. Singer's Phil 1 class. He teaches cool stuff and relates it to every day life. It's rare that profs. can do that. If you read and follow the syllabus, you'll be surprised at how amazingly and subtlety he connects things.
Took him for spring 2017 he is hilarious but a tough grader. His lectures are about real life experiences. Only grades you on your test scores. The final is long I used an entire green book! You have to memorize 6 or more paragraphs for each test. I wish he had a different grading criteria that allowed you to get more points for the class.
Prof. Singer grades hard because he tells you exactly what he wants you to do. I took him for phil 1 too and he does the same in that class. If you pay attention, you will know what he is looking for. The reading matches the lecture, which matches the exams and papers. It really can't get much clearer. It is also super to calculate your grade.
This class is not an easy A. You HAVE to do the work. Though, he doesnt assign extra fluffwork -- all the material he discusses is ON the tests. His lectures are really easy to listen to because hes constantly ranting about controversial things, his life, politics, and makes memorable analogies. I got my first B EVER from him, but it was my fault.
I am a bio major. and have taken every class prof Singer teaches at Pierce. All his classes are just a points game. Follow the syllabus and do ALL the assignments, and an A is in your grasp. If you slack off or miss anything, drop because it is impossible to catch up. I got my only C at Pierce from him in phil 1 because of this. He the best anyhow.
He's the best prof at Pierce but if you miss a test it is pretty much GAME OVER. Singer does not accept student excuses unless you arrange things way before the exam to take the exam before the exam date. I had to retake his Phil 1 class because of this. I really was sick but had no valid proof. When I talked to him after the fact, he didn't budge.
Took his 8am class, would not recommend. He resented having to be at work that early and constantly reminded the class about it. The class had no student interaction it was just a cycle of tests and lectures. I'm sure he's great if the class isn't too early but this teacher and this class was disappointing in my eyes. Would recommend a later class.
I took prof. singer's 8am class and it was the worst group of losers I have ever seen in a class. Singer would try to get people to participate but no dice at 8am. Singer is a great prof. I took him for phil 5 but the students in this class were the lowest of the low. Real bottom of the barrel. Cool for me, I got an A but it was a depressing group.
I took Dr. Singer for Honors before. This class was way different. Lots of people flaking on tests. Lots of the people struggling had also not come to class or didnt read but if you keep up and follow directions the course is a basic intro that trains you for college classes with writing. It helped me prep for transfer next fall to a UC. Great Prof
The class was incredibly dissapointing. He rambled far too often and was constantly getting sidetracked by the stories he uses to lecture. There were very little oppurtunities for participation because he lectured for the entire class, and when he wasnt lecturing we were taking tests. I would reccomend taking a different teacher.
I found professor singer to be really relatable. He grades hard but he tells you what is going to be on the test verbatim, so with preparation I did better in his class than in my other classes. His ability to explain philosophy with regular stories was a strong point of the class for me but you have to read and pay attention for it to make sense.
I failed phil9 and then took phil6 and 9 with Professor Singer. I did better in both classes with Professor Singer. He really knows logic well enough to be able to explain it to non-phil majors. I am a CompSci major and the first time I took phil9, the professor lost the entire class. Professor Singer really walked the class through the material.
If u do the work class is an easy A. If u slack off class is super hard. Follow along and stay on top of work and the lectures really help. Prep for the tests and they arent that hard cause he gives u the ?s in advance. Cool guy. Came from A cc background. Mad respekt.
I started UCLA this week and was shocked how much my classes are similar in structure and style to Prof. Singer. Even though Im not a Philo Major, I took phil 1, 6, 5, and 9 from him! Great Prof. Really helped me get ready to transfer!
Professor Singer is for the children. His lectures are raw like a Wu Tang song. Some students cant feel it. They dont get it. My major is music and my minor is philosophy, so I get it and appreciated it. I wish I could take more classes with him. He should do a collar class with RZA.
Prof. Singer is one of the funniest professors you will have. I had him for a night class and he actually made coming to class enjoyable. The class is difficult, but if you pay attention to the lecture and read the textbook, you will pass.
Easy A. He is so funny. There are not really any assignments but there are tests. The lecture before a test he tells you the EXACT test question AND the answer he is looking for. Other than that his lectures are not even really lectures, he mainly just tells life stories. Good class if you are just taking it as a GE and not a major prep or to learn
This professor is funny and I'll give him that but when it comes to his lectures hes probably the worst professor Ive ever had. Pandemic made this semester difficult enough and he just threw a bunch of pdf files with his notes and called it lectures. Very unorganized. Also used non constructive criticism while grading tests. Take someone else!
Overall he is a good professor, can bore you sometimes with his personal stories however if you want to get an A, do exactly what he says and copy word by word from the textbook then you should be fine.
I liked how his lectures were in a PDF. His lectures hit the nail on the main points of the topic and he has some interesting short personal stories to tell that tie in with these philosophers' concepts and ideas. With tests, they are nothing hard but just make sure to read the feedback he gives you when you get your test back.
his powerpoints were difficult to follow and even though I did my very best to learn the material i scored low on tests, what made it worse was that his comments/feedback came off sort of sarcastic. i thought it was a challenging subject overall but his teaching method made it 100x harder.
A really quick warning to all students if your gonna take this class, make sure to read your book more often and be prepared to ask a lot of questions. This professor is vaguer than the location of Atlantis. His grading makes no sense and be prepared to receive some condescending comments on your tests. You're better off learning on youtube.
What can I say, Professor Singer's Phil 001 was interesting and difficult at the same time. But his class makes you actually use your brain to pass. He is more then willing to spend hours talking with you and meeting with you, to help you understand the concepts and theories of the class. Test and quizzes are straight to the point.
He truly is not a nice person, his grammar is not good whatsoever for a UCLA "professor" !!DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR!! Your grade book will consist of 3 tests and a final, and ONE discussion comment, THATS IT. He does not announce anything to his class, I found out that I cannot submit my discussion, since he does not announce anything..
Sassy professor. I had his all online class and we only had 4 written tests on which the grade depended. For one of the tests, there was absolutely no information in the book and even online about the questions asked. There is an opportunity to get 40 points for responding to one of the discussions but I am pretty sure he did not even put it in.
Professor Singer was the highlight of my semester. He was very upfront with what he was looking for in his students and what he's expecting from his students when it comes to his grades. You aren't required to be there but his lectures are extremely precise as long as you understand he's relating his lectures to his own experiences. A++
