fair grading, very easy and helpful during speeches

Great teacher for speech 101!!
engaging professor. wants you to talk... little unclear about final project, but otherwise good.
Great teacher! He is very helpfull. Always available if you need help. Awesome class
He is the greatest teacher! No matter what the problem is, he will work with you to fix it in any way he can and will help you out any time! Great class-it's fun. It teaches you a lot! AWESOME professor!
Skaggs is great. He takes all the fear out of public speaking and is one of the most fair professors on campus. You can't go wrong with his spe101 class.
Took his rtv class and found that he was a good teacher. I had a huge fear of public speaking... but as the semester went on i became more comfortable, and escaped the class with a B.
Great teacher, I would take him again
He is a nice guy with a lot of insight.. class sucks.. but they all do! He is a wonderful person with a lot to offer.
Prof. Skaggs was an excellent speech teacher, even those with extreme fear of public speaking managed to get through his class. He slowly eases you into the process and makes you feel very comfortable.
The first day of speech I thought I was going to HATE the class. Prof. Skaggs taught us well and reassured us that there was nothing to be scared of, just remember to breathe. His class was interesting and I ended up loving speech class. I reccommend this
I think Skaggs was great. He is a good teacher and helps you out.
I don't think he ever had class, not as much as he told stories about his life and other people he knew i didn't really follow.
Easy A! Lenient. Midterm & Final only have 25 multiple choice questions. You watch a lot of videos, and write one page extra credit opinion papers on random ones. Very interesting class. I learned a lot about race issues...also makes for good conversation topics outside of class!
Even though its a Race & Gender class I got away with being a conservative middle class white male. Usually I'd be persecuted for that in a diversity class. But he's willing to listen and make the class enjoyable for everyone. And encourages debate.
Great prof. easy and cool. and i do mean easy
Absolutely the most fun class I've had all semester. If anyone can get you through the dreaded Speech class, Skaggs can do it. He's super helpful and really laid back.
Can you say Liberal? If you don't pronounce the "G" on a word ending in "ING" you get points taken off. He grades based on if he likes you was my thought. I have hard 3 speech classes and this is the 1st B. He did not give me the points back on my persuasive speech when I persuaded him to give them back. Figure that one out. He is stuck on hisself
Loved him and the class, a little picky on the detail of speeches but as long as you dont chew gum and speak proper english you should get an A. Exams are very easy & short.
This has been one of my favorite classes at NKU. I love giving speeches. You don't have to dress up, or sit in certain seats so that you feel comfortable. Because of this class, I am changing my minor to Speech!! Take this class!!
Very helpful. Relaxes you. Very open about speeches and such. Great guy, laid back. If you're neverous about taking a speech class take him. He's the best.
Really great professor! Take him, Take him, Take him!!
I totally rrecommend this professor! This class was an easy A. I would definitely say do the extra credit, it's easy and helps out a lot. All you do is watch several movies, and comment on them. Tests were extremely easy!
Best speech teacher I ever had. I'll keep it simple. Just take his classes, you will love them, and get a A+ in the process.
Great Prof. I had completely different views on the subject matter, but he didn't hold it against me. very fair grading and an all around nice guy. lots of easy extra credit.
Fantastic Prof, I would highly recommend him. He is very liberal with his grading, all he wants to see is that you tried. The two tests that he gave were not difficult. I would very highly recommend him.
Take him! His class is way too easy not to pass with flying colors! No homework (with the exception of speeches), makes material extremely easy to understand. Knows his material!
Skaggs is awesome. I recommend him. He knows his stuff and I learned a great deal of stuff. He is a nice, laid back, understanding guy. If you go to class, do the work, you'll get an A. He has opened my eyes on racism in the world today. I cannot thank him enough.
I had him for Race, Gender and the mass media. He is an excellent professor who teaches in a way that is simple yet you learn regardless. Really nice and helpful -- I would definitely recommend him and take him for another class if I could!
I got a good grade in Prof. Skaggs' class, but i did not like him very much. He has a thing against relegious people, for instance I wrote a response to a sermon as a form of speech, and he did not like me from then on in the class, very uncomfortable when religion is brought up.
Very easy! take him if you just want to get over with the class and not really want to major in communications. you just watch movies half of the semester and he tells you the questions on the test the day before.. just make sure you attend the class!
Open-Minded.
awesome professor, tons of extra easy extra credit, helps you incredibly, tells you all questions on tests, for race gender mass media.
Just take him, you won't be sorry.
Best professor I've had yet! Grades very easy and will help you the best he can! Makes you feel VERY comfortable with speaking in front of people. Loved this class!
Awsome professor!!! Take him for an enjoyable class and not so much work.
Easy and super fun!
He was pretty easy. Took attendance daily. Watch a lot of videos. Tells you what questions will be on the test. Many 10 point extra credit reaction papers over the videos. EASY POINTS! Don't really need to buy the book. 25 question tests from 100 pts on 1st exam to 200 on 2nd to 300 on the final. need to study for exams since they are mostly MC.
Amazing teacher, very lenient and willing to help. Do your work and show up to class and you will pass with no problems. He's not afraid to let his personal beliefs show, but they never affect how he feels about you as a person. I would recommend taking at least one of his courses
LOVE HIM! he is a great teacher. has so many great stories! the speeches are not bad. he is very laid back, if you are nervous for them, take the class. He is so nice and makes you feel comfortable. love love love love love the class.
LOVE HIM!!! Saw videos and discussed race/gender issues. Easy A. Read, and study for questions he gives you for review. You have to type about 8 one page papers and give speech. TAKE THIS CLASS HE'S GREAT AND IT'S AN ENJOYABLE CLASS.
Take this class for an easy A. Very few requirements (e.g. don't say "like" or "um" when speaking and keep your speech within the time limits). Checks attendance EVERY day. 0 assignments other than speeches (in front of entire class). Don't waste $ on a book; get the definitions for the final from the book's online glossary.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor. Easiest class I have ever taken. Extremely laid back, didnt care to get off topic, got out of class early a lot. Made it a fun class, I looked forward to going to his class. Easy* A as long as you stick to the guidelines on his speeches. no other assignments. Tests are a piece of cake.
What a great professor! Very interesting and much easier than other speech teachers but it's a great class and made me love public speaking! I would highly recommend him!
I really enjoyed this class. I was very anxious about giving speeches, but after awhile it became a breeeze. He tells you exactly what you need to do, and just have fun with it.
Skaggs is the man! Cool and funny with some awesome stories, talked about his past bar fights, 8-0 baby. Take him!
Skaggs is an amazing professor!! He listens to what you have to say when you talk about the subject. He is a very fair professor with his grading. You do only get up to 2 days to miss and after that points are taking from grade but he is a great professor you learn a lot! I totally recommend him for this class.
Great professor! He tells you what you have to do to get the points, grades very fair. Hit the time mark and have your outline and you are good! Do use book for Midterm and Final Exams but they are easy 20 questions- MC/TF
Skaggs is one of the best Profs at NKU. Very clear on what he wants from assignments, grades are fair. Hit the target time and watch your "umms" and you'll get an A. Uses the book for final and midterm, both easy T/F, MC. Only 4 speeches in 110 (instead of the 6 in 101), great for people apprehensive about public speaking.
Best Teacher I had out of all my NKU professors. He keeps it plain and simple, he is extremly fun and informational he teaches in a way everyone understands. Best teacher at NKU
He is the best teacher i have had so far. He is always willing to help, and give his time. His syllabus tells you each thing you will do everyday; and he will go directly off of it. I like knowing what i will be doing each day. He grades very easily on the speeches, but time is a FACTOR. GREAT TEACHER!!!!
He is probably one of the best professors at NKU. If you do the speeches like he wants them then you will do fine. He goes start off the syllabus which is awesome, because you know when everything is do. Class is mandatory. Since everyone has to take a CMST class try your hardest to get him as your professor, I promise you wont regret it!
Take him if you can get him! He made a subject that not many people like, bearable. I took it over the summer and I feel like I got so much out of it. I can not imagine taking this class over regular semester. Skaggs is great!
Best professor I have had at NKU. Easy grader on speeches, midterm and final were super easy. I finished them in less than 10 minutes and got A on both. He's very entertaining and keeps the class interesting. I'm a terrible public speaker and ended with an A in the class. I would take him for any class!
Go to class and get A.! love him :)
Easiest professor of all time. Really cool. takes off for saying uhm and uh. but other than that he is awesome, no tests but a midterm and final, can use your whole speech on speech day insted of notecards
I really love this professor. He has really taught me how to become a better speaker.
Skaggs is the best teacher I have ever had. I took him for race, gender, and the mass media and it was the best class I have ever taken. The class was so interesting and we watched a ton of movies and videos. He makes discussions super interesting. I would take him again, best professor at NKU by far. Easy, but interesting class.
Good class. Watched a lot of movies and videos which was nice, had to write an opinion paper after each one. Gave a 100% if you turned it in. Had a lot of good discussions. There is a research paperpresentation at the end of the course, and two tests. So it was an easy A. Takes attendance.
Best professor ever. As a foreign, English is very hard for me, and especially Public Speaking in English. However I got A in his class. This professor helped me a lot.
He is by far the greatest professor. He is extremely helpful. I did not like the idea of taking a public speaking class, and I was really worried, but I ended up loving his class. He is an inspirational man. He is also a photographer and likes to show his work to the class. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!
AWESOME guy. Absolutely hilarious and smart. Class is always fun and you really learn how to give a speech. Even if you are completely against learning how to give speeches you'll love this class.
I know public speaking is dreaded by many but Skaggs is an awesome professor! You do 4 speeches & he lets you bring your speech up to the podium. The midterm & final consists of 20 vocabulary MC & T/F. VERY EASY. He demonstrates how to properly give a speech which is extremely helpful. NO judgment zone & very caring. Tells many stories.
Skaggs is a good professor. He tells you what he wants and expects and if your listening to lectures, an A on a test is easy. He is an interesting guy, which makes class not crazy boring and actually quite fun. Our papers were relatively short and mainly opinion based. Would definitely recommend him for this class.
This class was a joke and a huge disappointment. All he would talk about was his photography or wife. He made us buy his photography book and write papers about it. The class was seriously just watching movies and videos that were 6+ years older. I learned absolutely nothing. The only extra credit was to go to his photography exhibit.
Skaggs makes all of his lectures engaging with many different stories. He lets you write about whatever you want as long as it fits the criteria. Great Professor, always knew I would come out of class laughing.
Skaggs is THE professor to take. If you have someone else for this class, I suggest switching because you will have way more fun in this class.
Professor Skaggs has to be one of the best public speaking professor at NKU. He's straight to the point, gives extra credit, always has inspirational/hilarious stories to tell etc. His finals are easy. Only homework is the speeches & a few 2 page papers that's easy. I totally recommend taking him.
Awesome Professor!!!!!!!! He is old and hipster. Kinda a tough grader but his lectures are just stories and his midterm and final are just definitions .
Pretty easy class although you don't get that impression from some of your speech grades. He offers extra credit and gives good feedback. He is a funny guy and great speaker. Midterm and final are just about 20 definitions. I think the $100 book and tangible workbook are pointless, but he uses the workbook so you are forced to pay the $100.
This was the first time Skaggs taught Photography and it was still a fun class. Each week we have a photography assignment due and we critique them during class. Be cautious, he will take up the whole 3 hours and it is very boring. Plus, you don't learn too much so you want to go into this class already knowing something about a camera.
GREAT CLASS!!! He is very funny and has a lot of interesting stories to tell. He knows how to make you feel comfortable during your speech.
This class is the easiest class ever. As long as you dont use filler words and maintain eye contact you will pass easily. You are allowed to read your speech as your present. Professor Skaggs is a VERY interesting man (good and bad) but you have to take the class to see why... His test are true/false and EVERY word matters. Use the book to study!
It's for public speaking, so just show up with a copy of your speech and then present it to the class. He is very kind and helps out people who have a fear of public speaking.
All we did was watch movies and write short opinion papers on them (100% every time), but it was very interesting. Skaggs is a super cool guy with a crazy life story (??). Definitely an easy class to get an A in. The only hard part is a speech towards the end.
Professor Skaggs was an amazing Professor to have. He really connected well with everyone and made the process of public speaking not as hard as people make it out to be. He made the area more comforting to everyone in the classroom and made the room a judgment free zone which is vital to any public speaking class. Would recommend to every student.
Never used the textbook or canvas, did not post grades until the end of semester, yet he is very kind and grades easy. His midterm and final aren vocab. Memorize the definitions verbatim. He gives 100s on all the papers, but none on any speeches. Its easy to get an A on your speech if you meet the time and quote/visual aid requirements.
All we did in this class was watch movies and then would write papers on them. You can finish them in like 20 minutes and he will automatically give you 100. An easy A class. He's super nice and has a great life story. One of the best professors ive had.
He is a great guy, but it is a diversity class, so it is hard to justify an old white man teaching about diversity. Regardless, he does okay at lectures and gives full credit on all papers, no matter the political opinion. There is a midterm and the final is a 5 minute presentation. Lots of 1-2 page papers throughout the semester.
Prof is a very nice and funny guy. He does like to express his opinion more so than hearing, but he grades fair. His class is super easy, you mainly watch movies and discuss. His tests are pretty hard, but nothing that you cant still get an easy A. There are several papers but they don't take long at all and they are very easy.
Professor Skaggs is easy going and keeps your attention in class. Hes an easy grader and will tell you what he expects.
Skaggs is unfit to teach in my opinion. He doesn't explain criteria/subject matter clearly, constantly wastes our time by having the same tech issues every week, & makes uncomfortable remarks. He pushes his (mediocre) photography work on us and the extra credit options are to go support his exhibitions. He's very boring & says inappropriate things!
Although Skaggs lectures a lot and tells many stories on his own personal life that can be lengthy his class really is an easy A. Follow the guidelines concerning each speech and show up and the test are super easy all of the answers are in the textbook.
Professor Skaggs creates a very fun and comfortable environment, which makes giving speeches less daunting. The guideline for each speech is clear and as long as you meet them you can get an A every time. The tests are based on the textbook and pretty easy as well. He tells a lot of personal stories and is always interested in what his students say
I had to take his public speaking class online due to covid, which made this class easier for me. I love him and he had the best stories. He never tried to sell any of his photography to us as other comments say. He was really caring. The bookwork is tedious though but other than that, just follow the requirements for your speech and its an easy A
He was amazing! I had different things going on in my life and he was super understanding. The speeches were not difficult, take his class!
Professor Skaggs is amazing! He is very knowledgeable, cares about his students, and loves to tell stories. He lets you pick all of your speech topics and gives great feedback. I highly recommend taking his courses. He was my favorite professor in my first freshman semester.
Professor Skaggs was a generally easy professor, he was very understanding and willing to work with me on extensions. There are a lot of papers but generally as long as you do them right and turn them in you get credit. He goes over midterm/final questions w/ the class but changes the wording so much on the exam it throws you off.
loved Skaggs! great professor and a pretty easy class.
Skaggs typically tells alot of his own personal life stories and he tends to be very understanding and easy going when it come to people giving speeches. He gives maybe 2 exams at best but the main grade is from speeches. study the chapters for the final exam and mid-term and you should be fine
Tells a lot of great stories, easy grader.
Very lecture heavy, but he adds a lot if personal stories to make them enjoyable. Easy A if you do all the work and meet the criteria for the speeches.
Skaggs is probably one of the best professors I've had. He makes class fun and enjoyable and always has a story. He loves teaching and loves his students. He lets you know what's on the test and they're all open note and open book. Every paper you turn in is an easy 100% as long as you meet the page requirement which is usually 1-2 pages.
My favorite professor this semester. Skaggs is an easy grader, there is 4 speeches that you have to do and one easy paper. The rest of the class is him telling hilarious stories about his life and easy online modules.
He is an interesting teacher with lots of stories (many boring) to tell during his mandatory classes. He mostly just talks about himself during class. The coursework is fairly easy, just do the ebook modules and don't mess up the guidelines of the speech. (saying uh or um) He is a pretty tough grader when it comes to speeches.
He likes to listen to himself talk about himself. His photography is not that good, but he does not know this. His book is self-published, so there you go!
Very nice and easy grading. But beware, most of the lectures are political rants and personal stories that he will tell several more times throughout the semester. He gives his side of politics and his side only. Very outspoken about his hatred against certain Presidents and holds religion in contempt.
Mandatory attendance and 6 total speeches. Easy grader on speeches, but the lectures leading up to speeches were brutal. Lectures were really stories he usually repeated, but they were very entertaining. Required to print a copy for him on speech day, but you could read straight from it if you wanted. 1 intro, 2 info, 2 pers. 1 impromptu.
super fun class and prof. lose points for uhm, like etc but this wasnt a big problem for me. 6 speechs, intro speech you introduce a random person in the class, 2 info 2 persuasive (any topic). last speech class picks topics and you randomly get one and have to give speech off top. there was supposed to be attendance grade be he didnt take it
He is really annoying, all he does is talk about himself, he talks the whole class period.
Professor Skaggs makes this class super fun with his engaging stories. While the lectures can be lengthy, the speeches are easy to ace. unstuck study was a lifesaver for speech prep alongside the free textbook.
Some of these comments are just lie about him. He's a good professor and his classes are easy. He does talk a lot but it's a public speaking class. He's going to speak a lot. Just pay attention.
Great Professor to have as your first public speaking class. He does tell a lot of stories during class. He has a easy grading curriculum to follow.
He talks about himself a lot, but his stories are interesting. He's not a harsh grader but will deduct points for filler words like 'um' or repeated words. You choose your own speech topics, and he lets you use your full speech when presenting unlike other professors who only allow an outline. I'd definitely take his class again!
