He is a good teacher. Gives lot of extra points and make up oppurunities. His class is fun.
he is very nice and willing to help you. he takes time to answer any questions you ask. if you study over the homework and do the practice tests you will do good on the tests.
OK teacher. You have to motivate yourself to do the homework, he doesn't care to check it. Statistics is a hard subject so I think it'd be better if he somehow forced students to read the book and do the homework.
fair, fast, personable. If you understand the material already this class is great. You will need to supliment the lectures with study however if you do not.
Mr. Smart does well explaining material to students who don't understand what is going on. He also has a policy that he won't tell you about until the end of the semester, but if you be an A on the final, the lowest grade you will get in the class is a B.
he's a cool laid back guy. pretty clear. younger so he relates well to students.
Jim Smart is a great guy. His class is not that easy, but that is just b/c stat is not that easy. He is always willing to help and clear things up if you don't understand something. Lots of chances to get extra points.
I didn't like Mr.Smart at all. He didn't explain things very clear at all. His teaching style is very different from what I had learned and didn't give me an option of doing it my way. Therefore, resulting in my taking the class over.
Mr. Smart is an awesome guy. Very helpful and gives extra points and lets you use flash cards for the tests. do the practice tests and hw. gives good advice too! :)
Taking him currently for lib arts math. Very dry, but friendly and young enough to "be on our side." Takes every opportunity to help!! GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Get on his good side! does not collect hw. will answer questions nicely.
very dry (could just be the class)!!! Helped at every opportunity, class material just sucked(tests 1 &2 you'll get A or B, but 3 &4 , have fun!!! Almost everyone failed. Stats and Prob and truth tables very unclear!!!)
Laid back and cool. he doesn't collect homework thank goodness and is very easy going. i hate math, but i didn't mind coming to his class. Very nice and young. but he sounds like ray romano!!! :-D
Good teacher. If you miss a test he will let you make it up with no problem. No homework and no quizzes. His tests are pretty easy, just study notes. I hate math, but his class was OK.
Mr. Smart is a great teacher. His teaching style is wonderful. Go to class and take good notes and you should have no problems on the tests.
Awesome teacher! He tries to keep you interested and is pretty enthusiastic and very helpful. Lets you take 1 out of the 4 tests home, I'd recommend it for test #3 or 4. No required homework, only for practice. Writes what you need to know on the board. Go to lecture and you'll do fine.
This guy is honestly the first math teacher whose class I enjoyed. The man really wants his students to succeed at a difficult subject and he goes out of his way to help you if you just ask.Best teacher ive ever had
It was the summer of 2005, and i had to take macc1105 Mr. Smart was hard at first, but i worked hard and made it i passed his class with an A+ wait that was my dream i passed his class with an C+ be is a great teacher take him
great teacher, made calculus kinda bearable, he is really good at explaining things, and somehow he made his lectures kinda interesting. very helpful, goes out of his way for his students, great all around teacher, but one warning, he expects you to know the material. his tests are no joke, but if you study hard and don't slack, it's an easy class
you will need a ti83 w/out it unless you are a great math person, you will have a hard time passing this course..especially in the summer term.
helped out as much as he could, dropped lowest test and 3 quiz grades and let you fix one test.do the homework and study for the test and show up for class because he gives you points if you come everyday.check out his tie collection.
good teacher, he explains the problems in class, and is willing to go over them with you in his office.
He explained things well and made math as interesting as possible. He is very nice and goes out of his way to help make sure the students are clear on the info and pass the class.
Good professor. Doesnt waste class time. Teaches clearly and covers everything. Very helpful and understanding. Was gonna allow me to make up a test that I called him and told him that very morning that i was gonna miss. I was able to make it, but shows how helpful he is when you really need it.
good guy, listens to whats going on, jus follow the rules and go to class and you'll be fine. pretty easy goin guy.. gators fan tho, its a shame
great guy... great teacher... explains well... very clear... if u have to take somethin like calculus take it with him the class will be hard anyway so u might as well have someone who knows how to teach
He's a great guy and explains well. But his tests are tricky.
He is not helpful at all!!! He claims he loves to teach and cares about the students, but he'd rather let you fail than see you graduate!! He is a liar so beware...he will tell you one thing in class and then in an e-mail it will be completely different!!!!! He gives way to many quizes and in my opinion is just an A** all the way around!!!!!
He is a good professor, he knows his stuff very well and he is very straight fwd. His test are tricky he wants you to think outside the box and he is very critical when it comes to grading the tests. To get an A all you have to do is pay attention in class, take good notes, write down everything he says the examples he does, HW and STUDY.
Awesome teacher! He is very helpful and clear on what he wants you to know. Although his tests can be a bit tricky, they are not bad at all. Definatley take him if you need math credits.
You would have to try hard to fail this class. Drops low 3 quizzes. Pick any one test and take it home. Extra credit for coming to class??? How can you lose? Not much of a BS'er though.
My first impression of the class was..."Wow. This is a pretty interesting class." This was one of the hardest classes that I have ever taken in my life...I would have much rather taken Chem. He gives too many critical thinking questions, and his test are extrememly hard. I didn't pass any or them....And I studied and did all of my homework!
This class was really easy, I got an A on every test and I really liked him, he made the class interesting and he explained things as many times as you needed. Take this class, he is really cool!
Mr. Smart is an awesome instructor with a great personality. I feel I learned a great deal from him. He is also very patient with his students.
AWESOME TEACHER! He was so helpful he uses My Math Lab which is really really a grade booster. Very patient and understanding. You get to take home one test (SAVE IT FOR THE LAST ONE!!) I definatly recomend him, best math teacher!!
best teacher ive ever had i actually understood math you can drop 3 quizes and take home a test hes the best plus attendence is extra credit take his class!!!
He is a good teacher, but he blows through the work like none other. Im terrible at math. I understood his lectures, but the tests were so nit picky that I completely forgot what I was doing and ultimately took the class over again.
hes cool as hell.he'll help u n if u still dont get it hell explain futher in depth for u to understand.
He's an awesome guy and is clearly very passionate about what he does, but I thought the class was really, really difficult. He moves pretty quickly in class but has a lot of office hours during which he is very helpful.
GREAT GUY!! has a great way to teach his lectures. hey is a gator though so make sure if you are a nole you bash on him... he likes to play around. you have to do all homeowrk on my math lab to pass or else you will struggle
Great teacher you will have to do a lot of work on Course Compass, but it is all worth it in the end. Very awesome guy.
Awesome teacher. Very helpful, breaks things down to everybody's level. Makes class very entertaining without taking away from teaching.
Mr. Smart is a sick teacher. His voice sounds exactly like Ray Romano and who doesn't love Ray Romano?? He's a really nice guy and I will definitely be looking to see if he's teaching any more classes that I need to take. I highly recommend him. Even though it was torture the last 6 weeks with all the work packed into summer A..he made it enjoyable
Great professor. Loved his class. Very simple. All his notes are online and you fill them out while he's lecturing. Everything is done on course compass except tests, but he lets you take 1 home. I recommend the 3rd or 4th one. Gives extra credit for attendance. He's great so TAKE HIM if you can!
He is a genuinely nice person. If you come to class and do the online homework there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and extended our homework deadlines multiple times.
Professor Smart is such a nice guy. His quizzes are all open notes, but his tests are pretty hard. Make sure you stay on top of the online homework. As long as you do the work and try it is not too hard.
Pretty cool, laid back guy. Quizzes are easy (open notes), all notes are online, webassign (online) and book hw for grade. Tests are WAYYYY hard. No study guides. Plan on doing a good amount of studying if you want to pass with a C or higher. <BR><BR> I had a 4.0 GPA until this class. And I've taken other 2000 level math classes...
I thought open noted tests were supposed to be easy, but not in his case. He makes things harder than they are and it was the hardest B I worked for. only take him if you are a hard worker.
5-day class for College Algebra. I took this thinking math isn't my best subject. But he explains a lot of techniques to solving a problem very clearly. No text needed b/c homework is on ML. He posts notes online for you to print out. If you're not there that day, you can print annotated notes later. But attendance gives extra credit for tests!
Do not take him! do not take him! do not take him! seriously he suck at teaching! As you sit through his lectures you see that teaching is not his forte!!He seem to be more excited when students are confused than when you know the material. it also seem as if he's ambiguous on purpose. trust me! forget about this guy, find somebody else please!!!!!
Reading through these comments makes me shocked! Professor Smart was my FAVORITE teacher of the 5 I had that semester. I got an A and I felt great about it. Not only was coursecompass a wonderful tool, but his teaching was extremely clear, in-depth, and elaborate. He had a great pace and he wouldn't progress until every question was answered. Best!
Trig is already a hard course to take, but the good thing about this teacher is he's very helpful in trying to make you understand -- IF YOU GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS and SHOW EFFORT. Quizzes are open note, tests are difficult. Ask questions during class or he'll roll right over the material believing that you understand.
Mr. Smart is a good teacher. He's pretty laid back and all but he's good at explaining the concepts and getting you to understand them. I also took him for MGF 1106 and made an A. You get to use your notes on all tests but if you don't understand the material that doesn't help much. But take him because he's really helpful! & g2 class!
Prof. Smart is awesome. i took the summer class and his tests are difficult, but he allows you to use notes on them. he's very friendly with extra credit and partial credit. stats are rough, but if you work hard, you'll def. pass the class.
Took online...terrible. I did pass with a B, but it was so very hard. Almost no guidance from instructor. Weeks before anything was graded. Was "MIA" for two weeks and didn't respond to e-mails or discussion posts from students. He may be great in person, but don't take him online.
Wonderful teacher! Extremely helpful whenever I had questions. He also tutors in the Learning Commons so he's available more than most professors. He expects his students to work and study but this is college so it's not an unreasonable request. Would love to take another class with him teaching!
Great teacher! explains everything and tutors in the learning commons if you have any problems. you can use your notes on the quizzes and the tests are from the homework/book. just do the work and come to class and you should do well in this class.
Took him for Algebra. He's awesome. He will explain everything and prepare you for the exam well. I really hate algebra, but he condensed it down to an understandable level. Passed with an A.
I loved Mr. Smart! He is a very good teacher and cares about his students. He works lots of examples in class so the homework isn't too confusing. Tests come right out of the homework and quizzes. You get 3 extra points per test if you show up on time every day! He really knows what he is talking about. I loved him!
One of the best math teachers I've had. I made an A, but then again I am very good at math. He gives tons of examples in class, and will stay after if you have questions. Attendance counts as extra credit, and he gives A TON of extra credit opportunities and allows you to replace your lowest test score. There is no way you can fail his class.
Does NOT follow his own syllabus. I did this class online. The first few weeks, he was real good about responding to questions and actually helping. Around Thanksgiving, he went off the radar. I emailed him SEVERAL times needing help, but never got a response. Only AFTER grades were issued did he respond. DON'T TAKE!!
Good teacher, took him during the summer A! gives extra points on test for coming to class everyday, can use cheat sheet on test, 2 cheat sheets on final and notes on quizzes. 1 easy research paper that you should get an A on. Dont need book at all. Attendance is mandatory, those extra credit points really helps out. Uses OLI for homework.
One of the worst experiences I've had at TCC! This guys class is EXTREMELY HARD! He gives open note quizzes and half the class still failed em lets you bring a page of notes to the test but even that doesn't make it easy. Gives a research paper that's about 40% of your grade. Definitely take someone else if you can!
I liked this class. I'm not a math fan but he explained everything pretty clearly. Make sure you come to class though or you'll be lost. Lets you use your notes on the quizes and a page of notes for the test. They're still kind of difficult but he is helpful if you ask. Also had to write a research paper which sucked since its math not english
He gives a worksheet and then just expects you to figure it out with class mates and if you ask questions he bullies you. Hated this class and had to spend hours with the tutors at the learning common.
Prof. Smart has got to be one of the nicest teachers ever -- you can tell he cares about his students and teaching! His class is tough it's true, but he's fair with grading and more than willing to help students. I recommend taking him, but not if you are not used to studying and doing homework. Great teacher!
He is very enthusiastic and passioniate about what he teaches. However, what he goes over in class is not the same thing that will be on the homework. He says he will give you stuff you never seen before. you have to spend alot of time memorizing that unit circle. but take him if you dont mind the challange
Mr. Smart is a great guy!! He doesn't teach you everything you need to know. He expects you to teach yourself certain things from the book. But hes more than willing to help if you need it. I'd take him again if I had to.
This class is very challenging. You have to spend a lot of time going over everything and preparing for the tests. He is a nice guy and a good teacher. We had three tests and a final, 8 quizzes, homework, and one paper. He gives extra points here and there especially for attendance. Again, nice guy...hard class. ( I am not a numbers/math person!)
This guy hands out worksheets and says, "work it out together". He explains absolutely NOTHING. If you ask a question he makes you feel dumb for not knowing the answer. I would never recommend him to anyone unless you love math and need not have an instructor TEACH.
Took online and was the hardest class EVER! I payed a tutor all semester and still barely passed! The tests are nothing like the quizzes and are also nothing like the practice tests! I am a A student and was overly excited that I got a C in this class!. I would not recommend this as an online class AT ALL!!!!!
This class is difficult to say the least and unless you are prepared to live at the learning commons to get help to pass the course... Then run and don't take this course unless you have to as a requirement...
This was a very challenging class and the Professor was very Willingly to give out extra points to boost up your grade providing you earn them while attending his class. The material is extremely difficult if you are not a Math Whiz. The Learning Commons was a blessing;spent countless hours there each week just to pass this class. It was worth it.
Homework and textbook are the keys to success. He says the homework problems are extra credit, but they are more than that; some of the problems appear on the test. The regular homework is online. Math, in general, demands a lot of studying so there really is no easiness (especially at this level). Put in the work, you will pass.
Not normally a fan of algebra, or any math, but he does a really good job of teaching. Really excited and absolutely loves his subject, and he makes sure you understand Why the math works, not a "here's your formula, just shut up and do it until it's memorized" teacher.
This is one of the rudest teachers I have ever had. He was very unclear and DOES NOT TEACH. All he does for the duration of the semester is give you a worksheet and tell you to do it. NOT WORTH THE COST OF THE CLASS.
Great teacher...kmow his math and really puts in an effort to make sure that you understand the material. Great sense of humor, nice disposition and very soft spoken. Best math teacher ever. If you need a one on one teacher, this is your guy.
If you're taking him for Calc next semester i'm sure he'll do better. It was his first time teaching Calc and our class was struggling and so did he, but we saw his progression near the END of the semester... Guess our luck wasn't good. He does know the material inside out and willing to help you, although his tests and final are extremely hard.
Amazing Teacher. You need to study everyday to pass, but you WILL know the material by the end
I had him for Calc I. He is an amazing mathematics professor. His notes are organized and easy to understand. You can pass this class and be fully prepared for Calc II with this professor. Obviously this is a difficult course, but you will pass if you go to every class and complete all the work assigned or suggested for you to do.
When I actually attended the class I did great. (the beginning) He teaches you on calculator so make sure you have one.
I do not recommend this professor. His expectations are extremely high and unrealistic. When visiting during his office hours to receive extra help, he puts you down and discourages you.
NOT HELPFUL AT ALL!
Mr. Smart has a great character, but not that of a teacher. Teaches straight from the book, suggests you do book work along with the online homework. The tests are nothing like the notes, so studying the notes is better off if they are cumulative of your entire math career. Super nice guy, will offer help, but super tough professor.
Took his Calc 2 class as a freshman straight out of high school. Was intimidated by this class but he made it so simple. He explains everything and does examples, I take notes, and have a quiz mostly every Friday. Only had three tests before the final, lets you retake one, and he understands missed quizzes or days. Never saw him in a bad mood ever.
Professor Smart is great at math that's obvious, but if your not quite a fast learner when it comes to math I would stay away from taking him. As a teacher should, he makes you think. And that's about the only positive thing I took from my experience Prof. Smart. He's more for advanced students who's done every math class under the sun.
Need a slow and clear walk through for College Algebra? Don't take him.
DO NOT take Precalc with this professor. He is all over the place with teaching. Might as well have taken an online class because I learned the material from Youtube. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Professor Smart is VERY nice and smart, but he can't teach. He would respond to our questions by saying "It's obvious." He would use the solutions manual when trying to help with hw questions. He had questions on his tests that he couldn't answer (did not penalize you, but you lost all that time). Very hard exams. Likes "tricky" problems.
Took the time to hold online sessions since we were an online class but it was hard to grasp the material since the book he had online did not match the book from the TCC bookstore. Spent most of my time goggling or on Youtube. Tests are 60% of the grade. Be prepared. 10xs harder than the homework and does not give partial credit.
Okay, so precalc is hard! if math is NOT your strongest subject do not take this course online or hybrid (that goes fro all profs.) anyways, Prof. Smart is very intelligent, but he is a fast paced instructor. Do NOT hesitate to go to his office hours. Tests are a little tough, but study the homework and pretests because they prepare you well!
