He will keep you busy with reading and studying, but if you don't fall behind the workload is not difficult. His love for music is evident and he really knows his subject.
He loves music but is not completely clear on what he expects on his "concert reports" and tests. If you take his class be prepared to spend money!
An interesting Chinese man who knows his subject very well. He loves music and plays piano. He likes those that attend class. Do the extra credit. Read text, take notes, do assignments (concert reports), tests are decent. Got a high A in the class.
His Class is easy as long as you pay attention, But I suggest you go with him, he's very clear and helpful when it comes to getting your H/W done, Be prepared for class, as long as you do the work you will do good on the tests.
Very interesting class-he is very animated and it is obvious he loves what he does. He goes out of his way to help his students understand the subject and to really learn and enjoy all types of music.
Super easy but VERY boring. As long as you come to class and take decent notes you'll get 100% on all the tests. You don't have to read the book or anything. Make sure you get a good partner for the concert report.
Nice guy, plenty of extra credit. He makes you attend 2 concerts though. Take this class to learn, but for the easier A take Ingersol who gives you an A if you get a C on both his tests.
not the most exciting teacher, but a great one. easy and informative class.
Really boring class. Hes really annoying, and boring. The class seems as though it is never ending. Too much work for a music class
i hate his class. its extremely boring. sure, he knows what he' talking about, but i can name more more than 30 people in my class who say they hate his class and think it's boring (and there's only about 40 people in the class).
This class is pretty boring many times i found myself struggling to stay awake. he is demanding: 2 concerts required, a huge composer report done with a partner, many unit tests. Tests aren't that bad but not easy, also i just found him to be irritating!
This class is very boring, and there is a lot of work. The tests are difficult if you don't study the information.
Way to much work for a stupid music class, he loves music so he thinks you should too its just supposed to be a class to educate us. He tells a story in the class about how many kids even graduate from college. Very motivating to hear from a teacher,NOT!
Way to much work for a music class. I have math, english and history this semester and this is the class i did the most work in. And he is extremely boring and annoying
you really have to work to get an A. Not easy very boring class
This guy knows his craft. Yes, you do need to work to be able to do well. Concert reports are easy, I just went for the first 20 min. and then wrote it up according to the program! Tests are difficult though, so again, you gotta work for those. Lastly, PARTICIPATE! Do these and you got your A.
A lot of work for a required general ed class, but easy if you follow directions. He is very particular on tests and takes off points for spelling.
Lots of extra cresit, test werent too bad
Song was awesome. One of the easiest classes I ever took. If you're not a complete moron, then you won't have a problem. Listen to the lectures and you can ace the tests. The concert reports were actually fun to do. I did the composer report the night before and got an A. Fun, motiviating, and easy.
The class is really boring. You HAVE to go to the concerts to get a good grade. Plays favorites, some students he liked got to push their presentations back, others had to go sooner because of those students. Don't take this class in the morning him + classical music ='s zzz's during class!
Hard Teacher, came into the Class with 6 years musical experiance and still could not keep up! lots of homework and very strict grader. recomended only for serious music majors. good luck with song!
Funny little asian man. Pretty easy class, just go to the concerts for extra credit and do the composer report and you should do fine. The tests are easy, straight from the material.
if you've had a little musical background it's easy, dunno about those who know nothing about playing notes. assigns homework, even does it in class, that's easy, material is simple.
Took him during the summer. The class could get boring since it was so long, but it wasn't too hard. Listen to the cd's that come with the book and do some reading and you should be fine.
I took Prof. Song a year ago, and i can tell you it was an easy class not to menshion fun. I looked foward to this class and listening to intresting new music. The eassys and concerts we had to attend wernt that hard, and i object to the other guy saying this class sucks. You just need to pay attention and do your work. And you will get an easy A. Its not that hard. I give him a 5/5.
sometimes doesnt realize that not everyone in his class knows music as well as him, i like him and think he is a good teacher but sometimes its hard because i dont know music EXTREMLY well and he thinks that everyone in his class does... but he is a good teacher and he cares!!!
Teaches his student respect if they get out of line. Good guy, I learned alot. Tests were easy, and reviews were helpful. Lecture style is ok, if not a little stale.
VERY BORING TEACHER. JUST DRONES ON AND ON. Makes you spend money on concert tickets, even when you don't HAVE THE MONEY. However, he gives no homework, and the tests are easy.
Not too impressed. Not disappointed though. Its just a little too much work for a music class. I did like the subject material though. Overall, I would recommend him because he knows what hes talking about, and hes passionate about music...
horrible teacher. once he has a grudge with you, he will not forget it. he wouldnt even let me leave to go to my grandma's funeral cuz it was gonna be my 5th absence (at the end of the sesmester) and i would fail if i left to go to my GRANDMA's FUNERAL. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. TAKE INGERSOLL
His lectures and homework are pretty useful, but the tests are difficult. It would be better to take this class if you already know something about music
Lectures are kinda boring but other wise he was a good teacher. There were a couple of HW assignments, 4 or 5 tests and one project, nothing too hard though. He gave a BUNCH of EXTRA CREDIT. I got C's on the test and go an A in the class. I would recomend this class for people just starting at Moorpark.
What a frustrating class! I enjoyed learning about music, but the class was too much work. The 5 tests he gave were the major portion of your grade, which is ironic when you consider he gave a 15 min. lecture on how he doesn't think tests are the best way to gauge learning. Also not very accomidating or interested in his students it seemed.
okay teacher. Means well but sometimes talks down to the class. Expects too much from people who know nothing about music. Tests are okay, just make sure you listen. If he covers something more than once it will be on the test. Sitting in the front and nodding your head like you're listening makes a good impression.
this teacher is soo boring! he talks more about history than music, and he is not understanding at all....dont recommend taking him
prof. song was overall a good teacher BUT he gets pissed off/annoyed easily. so dont miss class w/o emailing him first (that doesn't always make things better though) and participate in class. his tests are straight from the notes and he says to read the book but its not always necessary. if i got to go back, i would take ingersoll!!!
Do not take Song. He is a difficult teacher to understand and his lectures are so boring. If you ask a question he will humiliate you infront of the whole class. It's bad enough that he plays favorites but he makes you go to the concerts($$$) to get a good grade which at the end doesn't help you at all. Don't make the mistake that I did avoid Song
I highly recommend Mr. Song. He is a wonderful teacher. If you take notes and study, you will do well. I was not looking forward to a music class, but I ended up loving the class thanks to Mr. Song's enthusiasm and great teaching skills.
He made music appreciation boring, and too much work for a 3 unit class.
Professor Song was awesome. His enthusiasm for music history and appreciation of music was contageous. I am not a music student, but like classical music. This was a great class for me to better appreciate music and get a good grade. It's nice to be graded on other things than tests; the concert reports and presentation were interesting and fun.
classes were very boring, hard to stay focused. he was often condescending towards the class asking stupid questions but i don't blame him because the class was dull as well. easy teacher but you gotta do a presentation and go to some concerts.
Totally self absorbed, doesn't care about his students, and will openly criticize them in front of their peers. He is condescending, retaliatory, and vindictive. I learned nothing in his class and barely got through it and I am a music major! The worst music teacher I have ever encountered. RUN.
This guy is nuts! Why is he teaching college level, when he belongs teaching junior high?! I have never been bored to death. Is it too late to drop? I want my money back.
Worst teacher I had at Moorpark. I lose brain cells just listening to him talk. He is incompetent arrogant, boring, and impossible to know what he wants on tests and papers. Whatever you do, do NOT take song!!!
This teacher was a joke.
Mr. Song is an awesome teacher. He's always smiling and eager to help his students. Take good notes, and you'll do just fine. You have to attend a couple concerts and do a presentation. Other than that, he's great and easy! Plus he's really musically talented!
I'd rather be tortured than sit through another one of his classes...oh wait....his class WAS torture!!! The most boring class ever because Song wouldn't shut his face! He never lets you out early, and he makes you listen to his favorite songs for thirty minutes at a time. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS! HES THE WORST TEACHER EVER. EVER! HE NEEDS TO QUIT
very nice, good class. i learned alot and he's a great teacher.
If you listen and attend 90% of the classes, I think that anyone can pass. He repeats things many times (these things are almost always on the next test). I rarely used my textbook and took notes only on repeated material and got a B.
THE WORST TEACHER AT MOORPARK! WHY IS HE STILL TEACHING? HE GOT MAD WHEN WE ASKED QUESTIONS, HARD TO UNDERSTAND (TESTS ARE NOT RELVANT TO THE LECTURES), WE WERE FORCED TO GO TO ONLY HIS CONCERTS, AND WE DID NOT LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO RECOVER FROM HIS SARCASTIC REMARKS.
This class was really easy if you: 1) go to class and paid attention, 2) read and follow the syllabus, 3) do your assignments on time, and 4) study for your tests. Sounds like a regular high school class, huh? Yet many posters chose low ratings and this is a college level class. Thought you'd get an easy A in this class, huh? Welcome to COLLEGE!
I don't know why these other students don't like Song but I thought he was a great teacher. Is very easy going, gives you extensions on your reports if you need more time, offers a lot of extra credit. Follows the text with his powerpoint and nothing surprises you on the test. He is very passionate about music and it's cool he can demonstrate songs
Very aggressive, mean and takes everything very seriously as if you're music major. He thinks himself teaching a highschool class by teaching the students how to behave. Very childish and likes to comment on everything, He makes fun of any student who makes a mistake.
I am warning you, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He expects too much from you. His tests are really hard. Boring lectures, if you do not understand what he said, he gives you a werid look. He makes you go to his concerts, which by the way do not help out your grade in the end. I wasted my time and money taking his class. Please AVOID SONG, STAY AWAY!!!
This guy is amazing! Did have grumpy days, but usually very happy, upbeat, fun, and REALLY knows what he's talking about! Lectures are interesting. Gave pretty cool extra credit. I thought this class would be boring, but it was cool! Goes into the 'why' of things not just "book stuff". All in all great teacher! Hint: Pay attention+be respecful! : )
I really enjoyed Song's class and found it very interesting. However, I'm a musician and so a lot of the information is stuff I'd learned before so I'm sure that helped. But I found him to be helpful and nice as long as you take the initiative to talk to him and ask questions. Overall, I liked the course and the intructor.
I came to Songs clas with very good knowledge about music, but during his class I was totally lost. Unclear about what he expects, TONS of very difficult homework, hard hard tests. Very boring lectures. With that in mind, he's a nice guy. But I would avoid taking him if possible.
Encourages students to have a vision, to think out of box.
Wonderful teacher! Organized and intellectual. You must have average intelligence to take this class, or you will sound like some of the whining criticisms posted. If you have half a brain you should have no problems. I truly appreciated Songs passion and understanding. He is definately a university caliber professor!
If you read the chapters, you'll get an A on all the tests. Gives a lot of extra-credit. 4 tests,1 research paper, and a final(cum.)
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Boring lectures. He can't teach. Jumps from one subject to another. He makes you go to his concerts, which do not help out your grade in anyway. I wasted my time and money taking his class. AVOID SONG, STAY AWAY!!! You will regret it like we did.
I notice that a lot of the whining comes from those who thought it would be an easy class. He specifically mentioned that the class was for those with a real interest in music, for those who wish to major in it. Yes, the readings are hard, but take the time to study a little, do all the extra credit, and you WILL get the grade you deserve.
Excellent. Easy to follow. Requires students to pay attention & respect him while teaching. Follows book very close. No need to take notes, he teaches as the book is outlined. Does require you to learn of new music- classical/symphony. Highlighted/Bold definitions is what he tests on. If you read the assignments, you'll pass his class. I recommend
He can't teach, period. When I asked him a question, he got defensive and I ended up on his bad side. After that I felt like I was walking on egg shells. He made learning music like memorizing a book. I do NOT recommend Song. You don't learn about music and you end up getting a D, no matter how hard you study. Why didn't anybody warn me about Song?!
Worst teacher I've ever taken at Moorpark. He's irrational, rude, stuck up, and I can say much, much more. I would NEVER recommend him. I worked very hard for my A, but regardless he's a huge jerk. He is not a pleasure to be around. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
he is very annoying. his class is hard to follow. his class discussions only help a little for the test, most of the test is based on the text book and you reading on your own at home. u have 1 big report due and he wont talk about it at all until like 1 week b4 it is due. DO NOT TAKE HIM! ALL HE WILL SAY OVER & OVER IS THAT HE LOVES BEETHOVEN!
Do the homework assignments & study them for the tests. Take notes in class to help understand the material. Song goes a bit fast and doesn't always understand what you're asking him for help on. I rarely ever attended class, turned in my homework assignments late, barely knew the material and passed with a B. Class was fairly enjoyable.
Took him in the summer. I was taking one other class at the same time and working so I didn't do the concert report, but still made out with an A. If you pay attention and take good notes you'll be fine. Plus he gives an extra credit assignment.
Greatest professor I've ever had. If you are confused on anything, he will assist you. He does not require attendance, but it will help you if you are in the class. He will go far more in-depth than the book explains. I would definitely take another of his classes.
He is a nice guy with high standards. Large workload consisting of a few large assignments. I would only recommend 1 class of his.
Easy teacher. He makes sure EVERYONE understands the material before he moves on to the next concept.
Professor Song is one of those teachers that you either absolutely love or can't stand what so ever. However, if you're willing to learn and you put passion into all you do, you'll realize how much of an amazing musician and educator he is. People at Moorpark College really don't realize how LUCKY we are to have him.
Super nice. Really motivated to help you understand the material. Good teaching methods!
Holds a high standard which is good. I was NOT cheated out of my musical education.
This class is a breeze if you attend class and take good notes. He makes class interesting and is very clear. Doesn't respect those who slack off and expect an A. Multiple choice tests and 1 concert report. Offers tons of extra credit opportunities. Don't need the book if you pay attention to the lecture. Extremely passionate and overall excellent!
James Song is a great teacher. He is such a great part of the music program at Moorpark College and deserves a smiley face on this site and a chili pepper!! Such a great teacher who will always help you if you need it. He takes music seriously.
James takes this class way to serious for me. A lot of my other professors never really took attendance. He came at me after only missing two classes. Mind you I have been learning about music since the sixth grade. I knew all my major scales going into the class. I am a trained musician and I just think the music program is slowly going south.
It doesn't matter if you're a musician you cannot expect to pass music THEORY unless you can apply mathematics to music. I am not a musician but I can read music and passed with in A. Several extra credit opportunities were available and many students in the class were able to explain the material.
Best class ever! Im a bio major and never found anything interesting except science til I took Song's class. He is an amazing storyteller and leaves me on the edge of my seat. He makes sure you know the material by repeating the terminology and has EASY tests! And he gives out extra credit all the time. It's impossible not to get an A.
I read previous comments and unfortunately I took this class. I didnt fail but the only thing that I can say is DO NOT TAKE HIM. If u like have a class to fail it then go ahead and take it.
Prof Song was the best! Class was very straight forward and extremely easy. Attendance is mandatory but he makes it interesting because he is so passionate about music. Great class, definitely recommended.
Yes this is what allthe professors should be like, passionate, helpful, extra credit like no other professor i've ever seen, and even though this class was fast pace class, i learned so much! Highly recommend.
The hardest class I have ever taken at Moorpark. Who would have thought music appreciation could be this hard!!! I studied my notes, read the book and still the exams were impossible to pass. And to top it all off the class was a bore. If you want to fail and lower your GPA take Song.
he is a good teacher i took him over the summer in a 4 week class he gives a lot of extra credit but often times rambles and gets off topic overall he has a lot of passion for music and i do think he is a good teacher
lets put it this way, i got an A and have told any and all friends nott to take this class. its a decently passible B but A's are rough. his tests are about 30-50 questions, some of which you couldnt have gotten correct if you studied for 100 hrs, you have to read/study he texts on your own thats the only way to do well. his lectures arent helpful.
IF YOU ARE NOT INTO MUSIC DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! the people who got A's in my class played instruments. Tests are tough and the only saving grace is going to concerts. He is rude and will never let you out early, even if he has nothing else to teach in his lecture.if you like classical music then great, but dont take this class if you dont have to
Great teacher if you actually want to learn about music it is pretty easy and the tests are easy if you take notes. You can miss classes as long as you email him an excuse. I enjoyed the class and it made me enjoy classical music when I hated it before.
I was interested in music until I took this class. It's difficult and he is really rude. I would never take a class by him EVER again. He dropped me when I had a 63 and said there was no way to catch up, even though I had gotten an 83 on the last test. I would never recommend him to anyone unless they know what they're doing with music!
He is for sure difficult. I would ask him a question and he would have this blank look, like I should already know all this stuff. Not helpful at all and I felt like an idiot when I am an A student, go figure. I do NOT recommend him at all. Never ever I am taking any course with him. Heck NO!!!!!
Great professor. Nice, passionate about music, and he really wants you to succeed. Show up, pay attention/take notes, do the work, and you're on your way to a great learning experience.
Very passionate teacher. I took this class and really learned something. Not an easy A but definitely worth it. 1 extra credit essay, and extra credit on all the tests. Read the text book, do the listening activities, show up to class, and do the concert report and you'll do well and learn a lot.
He is extremely conceded and does not care about anyone that is not in the applied music program. He is very unreasonable. This was the hardest class i have ever taken at moorpark. You MUST read and study very hard to do well in this class. A minimum of 6 hours of reading a week. i do NOT recommend him for anyone who is not very confident in music
Very difficult class, but not impossible. If you are not interested in music, there is still a chance of passing with a good grade if you put in the work. Minimum 6-8 hours per week of reading and studying.
He pretty much gives study guides for everything. The final exam was easy except a huge 100 page timeline that I got 90% on. 2 in class tests, 1 take home test, 1 assignment from seeing a performance that you have to check the syllabus for the due date for. It can be a lot of work for a general ed class. You can get the 7th edition textbook.
Although I plan on majoring in music, I found him very reasonable as long as you are willing to learn, if you think that you can pass with out learning the information, you won't pass. Otherwise, I found him to be a great teacher.
I'm a bit biased since I am a music major but I enjoyed the class. Attendance is pretty important since new material comes up often. The homework is repetitive but helpful. He knows the subject well and he's willing to go over material until everyone understands. I highly recommend him if you're interested in music at all.
This TEACHER IS A JOKE!!! His class is easy but attendance is mandatory. I warn thee do NOT yawn in his class he freaks. No point in going to class just study the terms for the chapter and you will get an A. If he doesn't like you his grading on assignments shows it. Still got a B+ since I got A's on tests. BE warned you will HATE music after class
called me out for sleeping every class and using my laptop for everything but notes. What can you expect? everything you need to know is in the textbook! it's kinda hard not to fall asleep when he plays music the whole time and the music he plays is scientifically proven to calm an average human down. read before the test and do the extra credit.
Terrible. I understand basic music concepts, but he made the things I understand so confusing. He called people out in class and the due dates for homework were confusing despite having a syllabus. Didn't reply to emails. Didn't explain things clearly. Music should be fun, but this is my least favorite class. ):
Tests were hard.ALTHOUGH I thought he was such a great teacher. He made the material very interesting. If you like a challenge and would like to actually learn something I would take this class. He treats you like an adult. You give him respect he will give you respect and if you don’t the other comments are true he will call you out.
Overall, the class was a struggle. Have to read in depth the textbook, and take good notes. He is passionate about what he does, but goes off of tangents a lot. I got an A in the class, but it wasn't easy. Wouldn't recommend if you don't want to work hard.
VERY VERY VERY BORING, AND VERY VERY STRICT .
Very good teacher who is passionate about music. This is not an easy A, you will have to take exact notes but it pays off in the end. I didn't use the textbook much, but still got an A. One concert report that requires you to attend a live concert and write an essay. If you are looking to slack off, this isn't the class for you. I enjoyed it.
He's cool but is not very clear. He never helps you straight forwards but instead asks the class to assist you. I paid for a professor to help me learn not the class. I would have gone to my nearest church for that. Strict but for good reasons. I was really hoping to learn in class but instead had to lean upon outside sources.
Really unclear in his lectures. Teaches things that have no significance in the class and are not on the tests. Still an easy A, only because the subject matter is not too difficult to grasp at this level. However, I couldn't imagine how frustrating it would be to take this guy for any more-advanced/complicated material.
He's a good teacher. He know's his stuff. Very understanding and concerned for our future in a real college so he tries his best to make the class like an actual college class.
This professor showed no class. I had missed several classes and went to him because I didn't want to get dropped. He simply said, "see ya" when I began to speak. What I learned from him is that he did not appreciate a student who showed the respect to come and ask to remain in the class.
Attendance is mandatory, which is a shame since he will teach you maybe 1/20th of the information you need to pass his tests. If you don't read the book thoroughly you will most likely fail the class. He usually doesn't respond to emails, doesn't give clear answers to questions, and is sometimes quite rude. I'd stay FAR away from this class.
Don't take him for music appreciation. I was told by friends not too and I did anyways because I needed the class and I regret it.
Is not helpful or understanding. Was told by counselor I should drop the class, while I had time and I didn't. Now I regret it.
Do not choose this teacher.DO NOT CHOOSE THIS TEACHER. His accent and speech is extremely annoying after the second week, all the way through. He goes off and tangents and expects you to know whats on the test. All he talks about is Steve jobs, Iraq, and "thinking differently". The class average grade for tests is always 60%-65%. Horrible teacher.
Fabulous class. I am NOT a History buff, but he made it interesting & exciting. He is passionate & expressive, both in class & conducting. Grading: True, one test median was 65%: some students scored 100+ points, some scored below 30. Everything on test was from book, music disc, or lecture. No surprises! Lots of opportunities for Extra Credit!
I'm a total music geek, but Prof. Song made me love music even more. Music Appreciation was a pretty easy class. Just be a good student: read the textbook, go to class, and study. You should do well. He's nice, helpful, and super passionate about his course. He cares about his students and answers questions. I definitely recommend this class.
The most difficult class I have ever taken at Moorpark. I could not believe how a music class could be so boring and hard. To top it off the grading curve was ridiculous! His class lowered my GPA, what a nightmare. I would NOT recommend Song. Take anyone but him.
Does not teach his own class, he has the students do it for him. He is rude outside of class and completely unprofessional. The homework (mandatory) will take you 6-8 hours twice a week. Discourages memorization, you "should just know it." I loved music before this class, but because of him, I want nothing to do with music for the rest of my life.
If you like the idea of a traditional asian hard ass, then this is the class for you. He calls people out in class if they are not looking at the board. He will yell at you if you don't understand something. And, if you do not know what you are doing he will insist that you try to learn it before he moves on. He also doesn't believe in memorizing.
Professor Song is very thorough in his covering of the subject. He is helpful, considerate and very passionate about the subject. He goes through the material systematically and in a way that helped me understand what was going on. I loved his class!
The best advice I can give anybody is to not take his class! When I think of some of the worst decisions I've made in my life, taking his class is the first thing that pops in my head. He takes off points on the homework if a few answers are not correct! Its by far one of the hardest classes I've ever had to take and its music!
IS this guy for real ?? How many students lives has he caused problems. He has ruined students grade point average. On more than one occasion he has become frustrated and he gripes about how he is an aspiring composer and people don't respect his work. Not our problem buddy !!! He is the worst teacher I have had in my career. DO NOT TAKE HIM !!!
Info from textbook is MUCH more useful on tests than his lectures, which start off with a "you're music majors, don't you know this guy already?" kind of vibe. Kind of disconnects you from the enthusiasm when you're guilt tripped for not already knowing info that you're supposed to be learning for the first time. Great man, mixed feelings in class.
At most, 3 lectures. All other classes are having the students relay the information during class, which is very annoying because even though he highlights what he wants you to know, he won't straight up tell you the details of the facts. Start the timeline project at the beginning of the semester. Very dry. Not the worst, but not the best.
I had him two years ago. And after comparing him to the rest of my classes it felt like Jame's class was a 6 unit course rather than a 3 unit course. Get ready to work your butt off and learn nothing. The worst class/teacher I've had at Moorpark. Avoid him at all cost.
I read these reviews and still decided to take this class. Wow what a mistake. His class is very hard. He give a lot of homework. He doesn't know how to teach his class so he makes others to it for him.
This teacher is very passionate in teaching music theory and it shows. He makes sure everyone understands the subject proficiently and makes everyone pay close attention by providing feedback. He stimulated my interest in music theory.
Super passionate, he loves the material and knows it front to back which translates to how he teaches. He makes the content interesting and exciting, and covers so much it's difficult to retain, but that means there's a point to being there and learning. Great class.
The most difficult class I have ever taken at Moorpark! The grading criteria is brutal. The readings are not relevant to the exams. I had to pay for a tutor just to barely pass the class. My G.P.A has suffered because of this class. I do NOT recommend Song for any music courses.
I came into this class knowing most of the content he was teaching, this class was meant to be an easy A. It is, but for students who have no knowledge, it's probably intensely difficult. He's bad at explaining things. When students ask for help, he will lecture about being a bad student. He's very uptight and I wouldn't recommend him.
Do yourself a favor and take this class with someone else. The whole time it felt like he didn't want to be here teaching, just seemed so angry all the time. He is unclear about grading criteria and expectations. Very difficult to understand and condescending when you even ask a simple question. I am now retaking it again with another professor.
If you're the slightest bit interested in learning about music history (Baroque, Classical, etc.), you MUST take this professor. He a great lecturer (inspiring, interesting, grabs your attention). You won't be bored. 4 tests which are exactly the info from his lectures/study guides/book, a few short papers, 1 project. WOULD TAKE AGAIN, HANDS DOWN
Don't let the other reviews fool you. If you are serious about becoming the best musician you can be, take his classes. They are difficult, tedious, draining, and relentless, You will be forced to grow into the best musician you can be, but you have to put in the work. Song bends over backwards for those who want it. Don't bother if you slack off.
took this as a last minute class looking for elective credit and had a little theory knowlege so i thought it would be an easy A. wrong! wish i hadn't taken this class and ruined my 4.0 gpa. even my friends with more music knowlege struggled. gen chem was better than this class
Professor Song is such a sweet heart! I'm a bio major and took this class for honors credits. Professor does all he can to be fair to those who aren't music theory majors. Tests are word for word from his online quizzes. If you go to review day he tells you exactly what to expect for the exam. He's very passionate & I've actually learned a lot!
Hes such a good teacher and really cares for his students. Study a good amount of the material and youll do fine, hes very lenient and wants everyone to do well so just show him you care. Sweetest professor
I passed his class with an A !! But wow he is so arrogant and condescending. Horrible professor when students ask him a question he yells at them. This poor guy kept asking question and he kept yelling at him. How is he still a professor !!!
Professor Song is very passionate about his class and his students. He loves what he does and it's clear that he wants everyone to pass and long as you do your part. He prepares you for the exams thoroughly. Make sure you show up to class or else you may get lost quickly!
I wasn't a flake at all and I still think he is a bad teacher. Much like the other teachers in the department who are just bitter because they don't like they jobs. The whole time it felt like he did not like his job.
Worst music teacher I've had. I have played music for two decades, and am known for being able to pick up any instrument and play it. My biggest issue is his inability to recognise the importance of taking things slow, and has a clear effect on all the students. He seems to try to make up where he lacks through successful colleagues.
The class is either really easy or incredibly difficult based on if you read the textbook or not and any musical background. He is very sweet and extremely lenient with grading and assignments. It's a bit of work but READ THE TEXTBOOK if you want to understand anything bc his lectures don't help much. You'll do well on tests if you just read.
If you're taking this class expecting to get an "easy A" you're not going to get that here. Get ready to put in the work, do a lot of math, and be sure to buy the textbook. Professor Song is a very passionate and patient teacher as long as you ask questions and try your best. He genuinely just wants everyone to succeed regardless of their major.
The only way you can do well, especially in the beginning, is if you read the textbook. I am not a music major, but I read most of the assigned textbook readings and I did really well in the class. Also, Professor Song is an amazing professor and is super understanding.
Professor Song is an awesome teacher! If this is your first music class, it may be confusing at times but he is more than willing to answer any questions you have. If you have experience in music, this is the easiest class. He also has the kind of energy that just makes you feel happy and his piano skills are incredible. Definitely recommend!
I'm sure that Prof. Song is very knowledgable on the subject, but he is not great at delivering information. I found his lectures to be confusing and constantly had to look for outside sources of information to pass the class. Nonetheless, the class is not terribly difficult and he is a fair grader. Moderate workload.
if u submit ur work to him on multiple pages because its hard to see, he will only grade you on the ones that he will see on the first 2 pages, my grade has dropped down so far because he took points off because he thinks the part of the assignment is missing when its really not and its on the other pages of the pdf really frustrating
A good teacher who truly loves music, lectures are long but you can feel his passion for the subject making it better. Multiple easy quizzes a week, can't emphasize enough how easy the quizzes and tests are, able to take quizzes 2x to 3x. One big paper due near the end but other than that a great class to take!
He was passionate about the material and it makes a big difference in the classes, sometimes told inspiring stories. Handled a participation-heavy class in a respectful way. He cared about student success. During my time at the school he took a semester off to write a free textbook for students so it wouldn't be so costly to access music classes.
The amount of work was quite heavy at times, but the content itself was nothing crazy. Solid class
