The one and only JST! I did fine with his essays, but I know some other people in the class had trouble gettings B's or A's. However, he is extremely helpful with rough drafts, and welcomes them for early submission so he can comment and help you better your paper before its due. Class is interesting, really makes you think.
Take this man's class. Anything. Our class was on the Metaphysics and Ethics involving Death. He has a really sick sense of humor but you know that he really cares and loves the subjects you discuss. Be prepared for some shock-value comments, but he is overall a hilarious man. He's a brilliant man and you will leave the classroom feeling good.
He is IMPOSSIBLE! Hard to understand and is extremely hard to please. His papers are common topics but whatever you write he will question and disagree with. Average paper grade in the class was a D+!!
TOTAL HOTTIE!! Plus, he's hilarious, but in a way that really makes you think. The subject matter is pretty abstract, which I found disapointing at first, but he *really* draws you in. Tough grader, but allows rewrites and rough draughts. Oh, did I mention he's a TOTAL HOTTIE?? ;-)
Taylor's hard, no question. May be the toughest prof. at TCNJ. But he's fair, and he'll help you with your papers if you're willing to work. Yes, he'll disagree with EVERYTHING you say... but realize he disagrees with everyone b/c he wants you to learn to argue. If you don't want a challenge don't take the class! PS: Cute! LOL
VERY funny and interesting. Classes are challenging, but rewarding!
I had the pleasure of having Mr. Taylor for Biomedical Ethics. He is hysterical, fabulous, and entertaining. I promise you that you will not look at a bottle of water the same way after he tells you about starving Africans. I love this man!
Professor Taylor is an absolutely brilliant individual who has the ability to engage the class with his intellectual sense of humor. He is an expert on what he teaches and he will force you to question the ideas we blindly accept in everyday life. His class is enlightening and refreshing. Also, The guy is simply THE MAN. Straight up STUD.
I took Issues in Philosophy with him. The best professor/class I have ever had. The man is hilarious and a genius. He's a tough grader but if you work hard and take advantage of rewrites you can get an A. I can honestly say that I looked forward to every class. Highly recommended.
One of the best teachers I've ever had in my entire life. Brilliant, funny, and above all an excellent teacher. Not only was his class a joy to go to, the amount of knowledge that I learned, and will surely retain is incredible.
My first year @ tcnj I thought this prof was cute when I saw him around and maybe that came into play when I decided to take his class.Too bad I didn't get as much eye candy as I thought because he suddenly aged alot over the last year. It was still was worth it.He does have interesting ideas.Don't expect a good grade with zero effort. He is tough.
Taylor is a brilliant man. Classes consist of discussions which sometimes go off topic. Because of this, I often got confused. He is very harsh in grading papers, but he is very flexible and easy to talk to. He is very reasonable. Participate in class and he'll love you.
Probably the only man alive who can make Leibnez as interesting as all that! Plus, seriously cute, even if he is like 30!
Not a good teacher. Very tough grader, very sarcastic. However, whenever I emailed him, he was very pleasant. Also, he was nice to talk to outside of class time. But, during class time, he would often be too sarcastic (sometimes funny), and his teaching style was very difficult to follow. I would stay away from him if you are not a Philosophy Major
Prepare to drop a grade compared to normal as he is TOUGH. BUT it pays off--I took him about two years ago and the skills I learned in the class transferred to my other classes so well I know I'm doing better overall because of his teaching. The GPA dent will be fixed long-term and you'll do better overall.
He scares me but I love him!!
THIS GUY. His class wasn't too hard and he teaches by a mix of Socratic method and analogies. His sarcasm and dry humor are entertaining! He tends to lean towards act utilitarianism but if you defend yourself well, you will go far in his class.
This man..is HILARIOUS. Please take this class for the sheer enjoyment of listening to him speak. He is wonderfully sarcastic and makes philosophy interesting. Don't raise your hand for anything though, unless you want an epic logic battle, which you will lose. No joke, take this class.
I loved going to this class. Dr. Taylor is hilarious! He is a bit sarcastic, which I loved. The man is a genius; he has a response to anything you say. He'll argue with you because he wants you to learn how to argue. I've learned so much in this class and it's helped me to think in a different way.
Taylor is amazing! I was a history education major, but took his class anyway because of his reputation... it was totally worth it! I learned a lot, enjoyed his lectures, and don't regret this elective one bit!!!
Taylor was probably one of the best teachers I have had at TCNJ so far. Is is hilarious and makes his lectures go by so fast. I have never thought more than I did in his class and I learned a lot. I would take a class taught by Taylor every semester if I could.
You know that professor that's in all the Hollywood movies about school, the one's that hot in a geeky kinda way and just lives for the ideas and inspires you? That's Taylor.... Don't expect to feel good in his classes though--you will be SERIOUSLY uncomfortable at least once as he casually and sarcastically rips down what you thought you knew!
Do not take Professor Taylor if you want an easy A. The material requires a lot of attention but he is extremely helpful, do not get intimidated by his sarcasm in class.
Be warned--he's REALLY sarcastic, and if you don't know your stuff he'll call you on it. But I found he's always ready to help--grading three drafts of my paper was awesome! You have to WORK to get an A, but a Taylor A is worth it!
He is sarcastic and will call you out if you do not know what you are talking about. Prepare to have an argument for whatever you say in class because he will have reasons prepared as to why you are wrong (playing the Devil's advocate). Always try and send him rough drafts of papers, as he is VERY helpful in this aspect.
One of the best speakers and professors I have encountered. Extremely knowledgeable about the subject and never fails to make class entertaining.
A great professor. He is very sarcastic and teaches with analogies. His analogies are usually long and if you zone out then you will miss out as well. He gives a lot of extra credit and accepts rough drafts. He will force you out of your comfort zone and play the devils advocate when you raise your hand though. I I highly recommend His class.
He completely psyched everyone out on their first paper. He's not an easy grader though. If you apply yourself you should do ok. He gives you the opportunity to get extra credit and edit your papers even after he gives you a grade. The final was not at all what I expected, you had to know who's ideas were what which really messed me up.
Dr. Taylor is a rare scholar who is utterly dedicated to sharing his love for knowledge (specifically classical liberalism) with his students. His lecture style is throughly Socratic and for this reason students often are intimidated by him, as he always plays the contrarian. Take advantage of the opportunities he provides (IHS seminars) and learn.
Great professor!! Should be okay as long as you participate in class, send in rough drafts for your papers and take advantage of extra credit assignments. He is also very willing to help out if you ask as well
He is very passionate about the subject, but he is often away giving lectures or is ill, so that we do not learn as much as we should. He is not very organized. While the class itself is fun, he is vague and doesn't release grades often. There were things on the final we never learned about, but gives many extra credit opportunities. Be prepared.
Great class--some of the crits hes been getting are REALLY unfair! He always gave grades within a week--you only have to wait if you're not in class then. He was ill for two classes and gave Make Up classes for both. The Final only had questions on it about things we discussed in class. My guess is that the poster below didn't come to class much!
I have no idea why anyone would give this man a good rating. He was extremely repetitive, annoying, and worst of all condescending. His main goal every class was so make us feel dumb and unhappy. I do not feel as though I have learned anything form this class. He constantly singles people out. He also is a very tough grader. DO NOT take this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you don't want to be challenged. Srsly. If you're a snowflake Taylor will turn his 10,000-gigawatt brain on you and YOU WILL MELT AWAY AND BE SAD!
This is why I came to TCNJ! LOTS of feedback on papers (when you send in drafts, maybe not so much if you don't) and challenged to reevaluate EVERYTHING you believe... to see if you REALLY believe it or just think you do!
Originally I gave this professor a horrible rating, but I should have waited until the end of the course! He seems tough at first, but he really grows on you. His classes are beyond bizzare but are entertaining. He also gives great feedback on papers before you submit them. Stick with the class even if its hard in the beginning, you will do well!
James Stacey Taylor is an incredible intellectual and an awesome professor. His lectures are thought-provoking and rarely uninteresting. He is a brilliant polymath who will destroy any opposing viewpoint. A talented arguer, he could convince you of anything in a mere second. He is the ultimate philosophy professor and I am so glad I took his class.
Professor Taylor is someone who will destroy any opposing argument. He has a way of being so sarcastic that it could sometimes come off as rude, but it all comes from a good place. He is extremely intelligent and his lectures are thought-provoking. He challenges all your beliefs so just be ready to defend any argument you have.
This class was HORRIBLE! Not because of the prof but because so many of the students were so disrespectful--some days almost noone bothered to come to class and many just argued with the prof for the sake of arguing so we didn't get to discuss the readings. If I could get my $$ back and take this class with Taylor AND DIFFERENT CLASSMATES I would.
Thought provoking and passionate. Many people did poorly on his papers but he gave loads of extra credit opportunities. If you participate in class, the essays should be no problem at all. Would have been much more enjoyable if my classmates actually cared and put any thought into what they said. Be prepared to defend your statements.
An all-around awesome professor. He always challenges you to think, has meaningful things to say and is hilarious. He is somewhat tough on grading and can be unclear with why he takes points off, so you have to ask and he will clarify. But there are so many extra credit opportunities, so it's very fair. He is respectful of everyone.
Professor Taylor was not at all helpful. Majority of the syllabus readings did not correlate to the class's expectations. He would tell one student to write the essay a certain way and then tell another student to write it a different way and then grade illogically. Truly disappointed in this professor.
This class was an awesome online class. I got graded papers back in just hours with useful feedback and could revise for a better grade. There was a lot of multimedia made available to mix things up and so it wasn't just reading. The prof. really worked to make this a CLASS and not just something online. Would recommend.
Easily the best online course I've ever taken! Lots of feedback and opportunities to rewrite, and the professor posted responses to each comment in the discussion board every evening. He also made sure that there were multiple avenues to access the material--videos, papers, audio. Awesome!
Prof. Taylor graded harshly and with bias even when all the students from class attended and participated. He gave grades with no reasoning/feedback and would say to meet at office hours and still provide no reasoning for the grade. Example he wrote "perfect paper" on an essay and gave a B- and told the student he should be happy with it. AVOID!!
Do NOT take this professor!! His grading does not make sense. He goes on tangents throughout the class and does not teach the material effectively. If a few students miss class he takes it out on the class and grades the assignments even harder. Majority of the class ended with C's and D's in his class and his reason was because they deserved it!!
"Majority of the class ended with C's and D's in his class and his reason was because they deserved it!!" Seems like a legit reason.....
Very thought provoking lectures in his philosophy class. His British sarcasm can be a bit much but he is brilliant. Assignments are fair. Gives plenty of extra credit options. Does make you question things. Can even trick you and convince you of anything. Gives great information and resources for students to expand their minds. No books to buy!
Professor Taylor is extremely funny and intelligent. He challenges the class to think about hard topics and he gives tons of extra credit opportunities (take the opportunities). Despite what people are saying about attendance is not mandatory, that is not true! Show up to class and participate, you are paying for this class. Good luck!
I'm a senior taking this class for credit to graduate. I had figured I would take a 100 level course as it would be easy. While the course work isn't necessarily hard, he is a difficult grader. I feel bad for TCNJ freshman taking his course, it could be very disheartening within your first year to be graded so harshly.
I took this as an online course in Winter 2020. This was my first online course and I was worried it would be a lot of reading and writing with me working on my own. It was AWESOME! Videos, online discussions that the prof. was involved in, good readings, and LOTS of feedback on papers and plenty of re-graded re-writes. Best class at TCNJ!
Ok, so I was in the SAME FSP class as the kid who's leaving all the negative reviews--it's just 1 kid we ALL know who it is. This kid didn't do any reading and with 2 or 3 others ruined the class for the rest of us. He did a grade appeal (for his D!) and that got thrown out. I feel bad for Taylor for putting up with him. DROP OUT DUDE!
Taylor's class was the BEST in COVID semster!. Online was ready to go immediately--prepared ahead-and he gave Zoom meets whenever you wanted, adjusted deadlines, and emailed superfast The neg. comments below all look like they're from one class--a Freshman seminar 2 years ago! LOL some fresh babies weren't ready for college it seems!
Great online summer class! Lots of videos and audio as well as reading so you don't have to read all the time but can break things up. Super fast as responding to emails and grading. Very caring.
I took this as my first online class and it was better than I expected. Professor Taylor responded very quickly to my emails, graded my papers in hours, and offered lots of opportunities to rewrite. he also took part in the online Discussions and was very helpful there too! DEFINITELY recommended!!
if you're on the fence of taking a philosophy class with Dr. Taylor, this is the sign to take it. Flexible due dates, great lectures, and interesting examples made this otherwise bland class into one that I made sure I always went to. Open for office hours and all work is on canvas to do asynchronously.
Great Summer class! Not too much work (four short papers and a take-home exam) that you can re-do for better grades. Interesting topics with lots of videos and audio to supplement/use instead of the reading. Fun!
I took Logic with Prof Taylor online. It was great. He responds fast to emails, grades quickly, and lets you redo assignments until you understand them.
Take this class! Lectures are so interesting and there are no test just papers. If you listen during class and take some notes you will be good. He makes the material really enjoyable to learn and he asks many thought provoking questions.
Undoubtedly one of the most intelligent professors I have ever had. Class discussions were solely coming from his mind, he never pulled up a powerpoint or any information to lecture. No textbook required. Recommend going to class and reading his assigned readings to understand the material for papers and exams. Fair grader but his E.C. helps tons.
He's basically the Brit Indiana Jones of philosophy!!!
I took Intro to Logic with Professor Taylor. It was an online class; there are some readings you should carefully do, and the videos he posts are very helpful for the homework. Very accessible through email; always open for meeting if having trouble with the material. He truly cares about your understanding in the material. Always open to help you.
Nice person, and gives you a chance to correct your work for credit. Wish he put the grades in on CANVAS as you went, never got to see grades as you go. Online class started off easy, but grading made it hard to know if you were ever right or wrong. Left a little more confused than I started, but nice man nonetheless.
Great class, with lots of feedback. Can re-do assignments after he gives you feedback so you learn what you're doing wrong.
If you need to fill a spot in your schedule, this is the class to take. Dr. Taylor offered extra credit and resubmissions of papers to the point where I did not even have to do the final. Final and midterm were take home. Very easy class, readings online aren't really necessary. Lectures are interesting.
Taylor requires 15 pages of essay, and you can decide when you submit them. He'll give you a grade and comments on every paper, and you can re-write if you want to for re-grading. In class, you'll be expected to defend your views, so you should do the reading ahead of time. Engage, and you'll learn a lot and your writing will improve!
Lots of opportunity for Extra Credit and really cares about his students. Fast return of papers, lots of comments, really helpful. Does't use pre-prepared PPT as he doesn't need them. A Real Professor!
This class would have been better had more than half the ppl in it showed up and ppl talked instead of just staring into space. Only about four of five of us were in the class... the rest were just in the classroom. We should have a Rate Your Classmates site! LOL Taylor gave tons of feedback on papers--if you submitted them in time to get it!
I took this class two years ago. Why am I leaving a rating now? Because I only JUST completed it so I could graduate!!!! Taylor worked with me to get everything done so my personal problems in COVID didn't make me delay graduating. That's awesome. This is why I love TCNJ and am now A PROUD ALUM!
Great online class. Let's you re-do work until you understand the material. Great way to boost your GPA too!
Professor Taylor was the best professor that I had. I took his PHL 100 class in the summer of 2022 and it was all totally asynchronous but whenever I would submit the assignments to him, he would let me know what questions I got wrong and let me do the assignments over again until I understood what was wrong, and the whole assignment.
In this online Taylor has you email your work to him old-school style... and then grades it and gets back to you in minutes! Lets you re-do the logic exercises until you understand the material and is super-accessible by Zoom. AWESOME PROFESSO!
So kind! Let's you redo work until you understand it.
The best professor I have come across. His lectures are so interesting and thought provoking that by the end of class you will have left more confused and love the feeling. He offers a lot of extra credit and will allow you to redo assignments. This is a great class and professor to take. One of the miracles and gems of TCNJ.
Good online Logic class. Allows you to re-do exercises after getting fedback so you can understand and improve your grade.
Best LL class. Such a cool and smart guy. Only have to write a few pages and gives SO much extra credit. Smart, funny, easy, and British ... what more would you want.
It's a Logic course, so pretty basic. But you can re-do your exercises as many times as you like until you get an A on them, which is helpful, and Taylor gives good feedback. Also flexible on meeting by Zoom to explain stuff. Good class to take over summer to fulfil a LL requirement.
Tough grader on 1-2 page papers. Gives unbelievable feedbacks. Not a good Professor as people say he is. Don't bother taking him.
This was an online course. Taylor gives great feedback and lets you re-do papers. He expects you to think about what you read.
This was an online course and that made me worried as I am an experiential learner. But this course had lots of videos and video lectures as well as mulimedia and so it was't just reading and writing. Definitely recommend if you need a LL requirement filled.
Toughest grader in the world, doesn't give enough information in prompts and makes you rewrite papers over and over until you get it exactly right. Nobody deserves to go through this class.
Dr. Taylor is a great easy going professor. Papers aren't hard at all and despite what people are saying, if you put in 2 grams of effort you'll get a good grade. Attendance isn't mandatory and he gives TONS of extra credit. Final wasn't hard at all and the midterm was a joke.
You get out of Taylor's class what you put in. It's an easy A if you work through the semester. He lets you re-do papers for better grades after he has given you feedback on them. The Final is OK if you attend class and thought about what's going on. Don't skip class or hand in papers in the last week. Lots of kids did. Lots of kids failed.
He requires three 1-2 page papers for the class, an easy take-home midterm, and a final. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, go to every class because you will need it for the final. He lets you hand in the papers up until the last class but don't do this because you won't have an opportunity to revise them and will most likely get a C or less.
I'm not a philosophy major but I'm taking more philosophy classes because of this one. The class was super-interesting, it was relevant to real life, and there were games with prizes so we could experience the concepts. Grading was fair and you could get lots of feedback.
Easy A if you participate and hand in work to get feedback. Fun class.
This was an online Winter semester course. Taylor allowed as many re-dos of the exercises as you needed to get 100%. He gave lots of feedback and help very fast. Good experience.
This was an online Winter course. You could re-do the assignments until you got them right. Taylor helped a lot so you're not on your own like in some online courses. Recommended!
Professor Taylor is wonderful. He offers many opportunities for extra credit and for revisions if you don't do well on a project. He is a bit of a tough grader, but again gives you many chances to improve your grade. Classes are fun and we often play games for extra credit. He is very accessible and very fun to learn from!
Awesome fun class. Do the extra credit!
This is a pretty basic logic class. Not easy but doable especially as Professor Taylor lets you re-do homework until you understand it and get an A. Gives good feedback and available for Zoom meetings.
Good class but hard to catch up if you fall behind. Lets you redo work to improve your grade.
I took this class to get ahead but the assignments were actually hard compared to the handouts he gave us. I personally would not take this specific class ever again. I have heard great things about his other classes though.
This is a class where you should reconsider taking. James decides whether or not if your paper contains the usage of AI a lot and you can face possible consequences on the behalf of his mistakes. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!! SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME AND ENERGY!!!
Do not take this class. Took it thinking it was going to be an easy summer course to get ahead but he was super unhelpful. Did not provide good feedback on assignments so even though you can resubmit work until you get it right, the class was not easy and I would not recommend.
I didn't do the best in this class as it was like math but Taylor was super helpful and let me redo things. Good class.
This was a good class since it was a logic class but Taylor met a lot over Zoom to help. I recommend you take this class in person... so you can see him in person! ;)
I thought this class was going to be easy as some of the ratings said. I constantly got everything wrong and this class reminded me a lot about why I hate math. I was able to redo assignments and just BARELY passed but I heard he accused many people of using AI.
Taylor is BASED. Lots of great feedback so you're not on your own, meets by Zoom when you need. A real professor!! TAKE THIS CLASS!
My sister told me to take this class as she did and learned a lot for the LSAT. It was pretty easy if you just did the work and I learned a lot--now much better at thinking through logic problems. Lots of people complained during the course on Discord as they didn't want to do any work "as it's summer". Wise up. ITS A CLASS.
Lots of good feedback on four very short papers which you can redo for a higher grade. Doesn't expect too much reading for a summer course. Interesting topics. Discussion Boards were meh but that's not Taylor's fault. Recommended for a summer class.
Good online class. Takes care of a requirement.
Graded by four short papers, discussion posts which get participations points, and then three papers in the final. Gives you lots of feedback on the papers which you can redo for better grades until you get the grade you want. An easy A if you do the work and have half a brain.
This was the first college-level course I have taken at TCNJ. I'm a junior. There is no textbook; the readings and videos are all online. Taylor grades your papers quickly gives lots of feedback and lets you re-do them to improve your grade. He makes you argue for your view--you can't just say what you think.
Loads of helpful feedback. Not an easy A but you learn how to argue your point.
Good course. Helps you with comments and lets you redo work for full credit. Meets by Zoom to explain things.
Very clear guidelines for hos to do the exercises, lets you re-do things three times to get them right. Really good comments on exercises so it was easy to fix them. DEFINITELY take this online to get your requirements out of the way easily.
Take this class with Taylor. He let's you re-do things and gives you feedback before you try again so you know what to do. Also meets by Zoom to help. Kind and caring professor.
I took this as a summer class and I would say to avoid this class if you can. He's very knowledgable and does give extra credit at the end of the semester, but his grading is very very strict and he gives close to no guidelines as to what papers are supposed to look like. Class consists of discussions, 4 papers, and a final of 3 more papers.
Make you write essays, but doesn't give a clear criteria. Gives feedback that makes no sense, and after resubmitting, still not satisfied. Accuses many people ofmusing AI. Don't take him for summer. You're better off with some other class.
Dr. Taylor was one of my favorite professors. The class is a little complicated, but if you go to class and take notes, you'll do fine on the exams. Attendance isn't mandatory, BUT there are only a few readings and no homework/textbook, so EVERYTHING on the exam is from the lectures themselves.
He's literally amazing. No homework, plenty of chances for extra credit and he's absolutely hilarious. He's such a silly little guy. 3 exams and a final, all were easy if you paid attention in class. Only negative is that his feedback is vague but it doesn't matter. PLEASE take this class you won't regret it, he's one of my favorite professors!
Very nice guy. I ended up dropping the course as that is what he advised me to do since he said I was struggling. His homework is harder than the examples he gives, and if you need a bit of practice as most people do with a math-formulated course like this, he doesn't provide it. Definitely know Algebra & Calculus well before taking this course.
Philosophy and logic was the hardest class I have ever taken. I took it as a winter course and it was very very hard. It was easy till logical proofs came into the course and his homework questions were 100 times harder than the notes. He does email back fast, but the feedback was not super helpful.
Professor Taylor's class is no walk in the park, but with effort and the right tools like Unstuck AI, you can succeed. It's challenging but he provides great feedback to help you improve. Take it seriously and you'll learn a lot.
I really enjoyed this class. Teaching style was different than any other professor I have had. He can be kinda arrogant at times but lectures were very intresting. The class consisted of only 4 exams and one or two extra credit oppurtunities- nothing else. Exams are fairly easy as long as you attend lectures. Very interactive way of teaching.
very hard class to take online... beware he doesnt post grade in canvas ever.
A great class to get requirements done. Lots of feedback on exercises, done at home. Final was in person…. So you're screwed if you ChatGPT'd the exercises. Pretty evil but also cool.
If you took discrete and succeeded in the logic unit, I'd highly recommend this asynchronous class. There's barely any work (9 assignments total) with ample time to do it, and Taylor gives you 2 chances to fix your mistakes after submitting. Just use the resources on Canvas and you should be fine. No tests besides the final.
Grades aren't posted on canvas, when I asked to confirm what I had calculated I was ignored on several occasions. Uses youtube videos to teach. Lets you redo exercises but won't tell you what specifically to fix. In person final worth 35% of overall grade. No idea how I did on the final as that wasn't posted either. Big guessing game.
Doesn't post grades on canvas but tells you your score on each exercise so easy to keep track. Lets you redo things two times for better grade. Exam is in person but pretty easy if you did ok in exercises and don't use Chat for them.
Rocks motes, no cap. Super easy to talk to and makes time for you by Zoom whenever needed. Doesn't post grades but gives them to you. Let's your re-do things for credit so you learn. Definite recc as an online class for requirements.
He rearranged the class schedule to accommodate Yom Kippur. That's pretty awesome.
