He does have his favorite's. He will also tell you your speech was good then dismantle to piece then give you a bad grade. Other than that he is a good teacher.

Glad I took the class because it does teach you how to time a speech exacly down to the minute. His main problem is that he falls asleep while listening to your speech and then he might give you a bad grade even if he wasnt listening.
I'll bring up the favorites issue as well... it seems as though he gives you a grade based on how well he likes you or not.
Stewart is one of the worst prof. I've had in 4 yrs. He rambles in class and wants you to write your paper by repeating what he said with a personal example to prove that he's right. I will NEVER recommend him for any class EVER.
He is not that easy, yet not that difficult. He makes you think and expects you to use concepts and principles and relate them to your life. He gives you the final the first week of class. I like him!
I agree with these people. He has his favorites. especially those he eats lunch with at the Round Table. And what is his deal with the color orange?

Stewart is by far the worst professor at TTU. He assumes everyone is ****, unless you've spent time with him previously and become a favorite. And you better be praising Jesus or he will have no respect for what you say.
I like him. He lets you know what he wants to see. Yes he has favorites, and doesn't like orange. But if you put forth the time and effort in preparing your speech you do well.

I don't go to school to be witnessed to, I go to school to LEARN. You get a big ol' dose of Jesus in his class, whether you want it or not. Is not too helpful in criticisms--won't write down much of what you did wrong on your evaluation sheet.

I hated this class and I did not like the instructor. He has his on way of looking at things and if you don;t agree than you are wrong. He had his favorites and the rest of class was invisable. Very confusing and NOT helpfull.
If you're not one of his favorites you won't get an A. No matter how hard you study. Just a little advice,If you have to take him.. Keep ALL of your graded work that he hands back to you. He has cheated people out of their grades. He did it to me.
I hated this class with a burning passion. He doesn't have a fair grading scale. I found that it really doesn't matter what you say, as long as your timing is perfect. If it's not, then forget it....my first C ever! Whatever you do DON'T take him.
His basic outline for speech writing is the OPPOSITE of what should be done. He is unhelpful and, I believe, takes religious preference into a lot of consideration when grading, which is wrong.

Keep ALL work that he hands back to you. He has cheated people out of their grades. I learned the hard way.He cheated me out of a whole letter grade. I had no way to prove it because I did not save my work he gave back to us. He definately picks favorites
I thought that he cared about everyone who tried. I never had a problem understanding his directions. Further, I believed that his teaching style was very helpful. I did not make A's in everything, infact I made a D on one assignment. I studied more.
This teacher is a caring individual! if you care about your grades and talk to him about improvements that you need to correct then he will help you out in any way that he can! i loved his class !!!!!!!!
It's hard, but he's very approachable. Honors sections are not for the faint of heart.

Should never have taken this guy. He expects way too much out of an introductory speech class. If you dont have perfect timing for each of your main points, your grade is automatically bumped down. He sleeps in class due to too much southern comfort

He's horrible about explaining the assignments, he grades the speech outlines incredibly unjustly, he will give you a 0 for going 40 secs over your assigned time. Often hungover in class... You WILL want to skip his class a lot.
Written comments on my final speech: "Timing and delivery excellent, very informative and engaging. Very good work!" Grade on my final speech: C. When I asked why I got a C on the speech and my final grade, he said he couldn't remember, but that he had to trust his prior judgment. He's a joke.
Dr Stewart is a joke! He doesnt make any sense and he talks in circles. I dont know my final grade yet, but he is not conistant with his grading scales. He drives me crazy and i cant stand going to his class!
He is very confusing. I made good grades on my speeches but other people who did as well as i did recieved Cs and Ds. I dont understand the justification of his grading. He also hates it when you go over your allotted time.

Dr. Stewart makes inappropriate comments constantly. It is obvious he has issues. Also, I am a very outgoing person (I was president of my class, involved in student government, member of speech team etc. Never missed class and he gave me a D. Asked why? He "didn't know, exactly."
It's dead weak and I just gave my final speech. I asked him If I could get with him soon to discuss my final grade. He said he couldn't. He also refused to discuss my total speech time (he said I went over, but my stop watch said differently.
He is absolutely horrible! I did EVERYTHING HE ASKED and I would still get a B or a C. And if you ask him why you got a grade, he will say he doesn't remember. He also fell asleep during someone's speech. He's crazy, a horrible teacher, and HE NEEDS TO RETIRE.

On my first speech he gave me a D. He did not mark my outline or comment on my speech. When I tried to contact him he was either not there during his office hours or he would reply with condescending emails insulting my intelligence. Terrible.I dont like football so my opinion didnt matter. Never keeps class longer than an hour but in that time makes you feel stupid as many times as he can. Im losing my scholarship over this class, i told him this and he laughed at me, serioiusly. Avoid at all costs, id take a break from college for a year or two to avoid taking him again.worst

He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had I all my years of being in school. He changes due dates for speeches mid year, is extremely frustrating. Takes to much emphasis on the outline and not the actual speech. If you don't do your outline exactly the way he says he will make off at least a letter grade. AVOID AT ALL COST.
If you dont do the outline correctly than there is no chance of getting a C or better on your speech. But if you go to class than you will get at least a C. My advice though is take another Professor if at all possible!!
How can this man be teaching at a University? He just doesn't care. I think I am going to apply for his job. I made an A in the class but with no help from him. He is very confusing. I write this in hopes he will read it and change his sorry ways or Tech will read it and change him. I feel sorry for him.

Dr. Stewart is in no way the monster portrayed here. His class is interesting and informative. The class had great discussions after every speech given. I dreaded this class and put it off as long as possible. This was unnecessary because I thoroughly enjoyed it and got my A.

Helped make the book for the class but you dont even use it. Unless u are female, and are willing to cry during your speeches, dont take him. trust me

Yeah, he is ridiculous. If you are not on the football team, forget it you're gonna fail! He marks mostly on the time of your speech, but even when they're good speeches and within the time, he give you a D. Only C i ever got in college. When i tried to change my grade..he said i earned it , which is impossible since he has no set grading rubric.

For a class that seemingly all undergrads have to take, he makes it far too difficult. He never clarifies what exactly it is he's looking for. He'll feign interest in your speech while looking at you like you're an idiot, take off two letter grades for seemingly anything, and make you buy a textbook you'll never use. Need more room for elaboration.
This class was horrible. He slept during speeches, and graded based on religious content, regardless of the topic. If anything, it had a negative effect on my speaking ability. Luckily I had chances to refine my skills in other classes.
The real problem I had in this class was not the professor but rather the students. My classmates texted during lecture, did not pay attention, complained and whined, didn't prepare their work, and didn't do the assignments. So, where is the real problem. The individual students who want an easy "A" without doing the work!

He is very egotistical, but this class is not that hard. He will not give you your grade though, you must do the work the way he says. The speeches are not that hard. I just took the outline off his website, as he encourages all to do, and filled in the blanks. I did great

Sometimes hard to understand what he was wanting... as long as you do what he says, even when it seems silly, you will get a good grade. I followed instructions and got an A.
He makes you do a lot of pointless work...like find 50 sources. He softened up a bit at the end of the semester and ended up cancelling our final. If you do everything exactly as he wants it, you'll be fine. Be wary of your time. He fails you if you don't meet the requirements...
I didnt really like this class there really is alot of work that shouldnt be required for an intro class but just set your mind to it and you will do well. talk to him in and out of class if he gets to know you you will do better. i wouldtake his class again but only cause i know now what to expect.
Time management is key. If your speech is within time, you will do well. 1/2 letter grade for not missing a class. 4 speeches, including a group speech. Speeches count more and more as they progress. You have to work hard at the end of semester with speeches three and four. Overall, good prof, and he canceled the final.
This class was great and Dr. Stewart is an awesome teacher. At first I was scared because he is the head of the department, but I loved the class!!! He really did help me with speaking in public. Just keep you eye on the time!!!
Just about all of the bad things you read about him are true. He is so vague, it's not even funny. I made a C on every speech, and then he failed my groups' speech, which was total BS. I ended up with a D, so now I can't get into nursing school, thanks to him. If you aren't really great at giving perfect speeches, DON'T TAKE HIM! You will regret it
4 speeches. one informative. one demonstrative. one persuasive & then group project. TIME is key. you cannot be under time or over time or you will get an F. time is an automatic failure. Practice. Stick with it! and go to his office for help regularly.
Go to class; participate; be prepared to speak when assigned; stay within announced TIME requirements. Dr. Stewart is very helpful and makes himself available to his students. Solicit his opinion on speech subjects from the beginning of class and followup with one-on-one sessions, you'll be fine:)
Every negative thing you read about this guy is true. He has no interest in the class other than grading and when you go to him to debate or ask questions (which I did a lot of personally) he will always shoot you down even when he says he sees your point. He is always right and mentions everything though is extremely vague. DO NOT TAKE HIM PERIOD!
He is the coauthor of his book. Sneakily, he requires his students to buy his book by mandating his students to turn in an absurd info sheet (p 215) from the book itself. It cannot be copied, etc. He would make an excellent politician: he does not answer ANY questions directly. If you like semi-decent explanations and help, DO NOT take his course.
i got a C in his class and i have no problem whatsoever speaking in front of people. he will fail your speech if you are over or under by seconds. i don't know how he is still teaching.
I have never encountered a bad teacher; untill this one. He is very biased, and gives a pathetic excuse for your grade. I am a good student, and he gave me awful grades. My peers told me I was an amazing speaker, and did not understand my grades. I asked him about my grades. He gave me feedback for an A. I fixed them, and he gave me a D. Awful :(
Dr. Stewart is a disgrace of a teacher. He should not be called a teacher! A teacher is someone that cares about their students and wants to help them learn. He has no respect for anyone and does not care about the student in any way. Do not take this teacher he is awful and does not deserve to teach. Do not take his course ever! He is a jerk!
First off lets get this straight. He is suppose to be a speech teacher but he never teaches you how to speak at all. He teaches you how to make an outline his way, which is a ridiculous way. When I asked him where i stood in the class his answer was I don't know. And never gave me a clear understanding of what was needed to make a better grade than an F.
Although not extremely clear when explaining things he really was interested in his students' success. That isn't to say he doesn't expect you as a student to take responsibility for your speeches and work in general. By the way he isn't **** that is just people's way of putting their failures in his class on him.
Jazz is a great teacher! He states at the beginning of the semester what it takes to pass and what will be on the final. If you come to class, pay attention, and put forth an effort, you will pass. He always answered my emails and helped me whenever I asked. He truly cares about his students' success.
He's a hard teacher, but you must give him credit, he loves what he does. I worked really hard on all my speeches and it seems I'll come out with a high A...And it's cause i worked hard and didn't put my speech off until the last minute. He really cares and does good at trying to make you the best possible speaker you can be.
He is not a fair teacher. he told me I was one of the better speakers in the class and he really enjoyed my speeches. I still failed. He would not explain why and would not help me improve. He actually failed our entire class. Not one person passed. I give speeches for a living and still failed.
He doesn't follow his syllabus nor his website. He's entirely subjective on grading outlines and speeches. We hardly use our book, and he helped write the book! He loves what he does, but he doesn't use the speeches in a practical setting. Choose another professor if you can.

I strongly suggest not taking this teacher for speech if you care at all about your grade. He's passionate about the subject, but a terrible teacher overall.

Worst teacher at tech hands down. Failed 12 out of 16 in my class me and two other students got a D. Made A's and B's on all speeches but gave all groups 0 on 25% outline. Contradictory. Grade appeal. Failed. Very disrespectful in office visits.
Dr. Stewart is kind and will help any students who ask for it. I am expecting a good grade in the class, because I showed up, listened to his instruction, and asked for help. Time management is definitely an issue, but this is a skill that all college students should learn. I would only recommend him to students who put forth a great effort.
Please take this advise. Dr.Stewart's class is very difficult to pass. I went a minute and four seconds over on a speech and he failed me for the whole assignment. His explanation for failing me was I went to long on the speech. Dr. Stewart said it himself to the class. "I don't grade you on how right you are but on how wrong you are".

Dr. Stewart has a lot of wisdom and relevance. I asked for assistance and it helped. Once he saw that I was interested to know and understand he was invested in the outcome. I learned plenty because I wanted to.

By far the worst teacher at Tech, he does not make it clear what he wants and changes what he wants throughout the class. He "gives" you the final on the first day but it is very redundant and unnecessary.
This teacher is very opinionated and judgmental. He brings a negative attitude to class and it affects the way he addresses and talks to his students. He has many little rules that unless explicitly followed, result in severe grade penalties. The worst thing is that he is extremely unclear, yet demands his idea of perfection.
This man may seem like the worst professor at tech, but he is really helpful if you put in the time. He is really big on attendance if you are late it is okay because he sees that you tried to get there and won't mark off for it. The best advice I can give is always go on the first day of speeches!
DO NOT TAKE. I got A's on all outlines and did good on speeches but gave me a C in the end. Very unfair teacher. I'm just glad I passed. There was only about 7 left in the class in the end and 4 of those failed. The final speech is 21 minutes and I was 5 seconds under the 21 mark and I got a C.
He is great, go to his website EVERYTHING is there. If you have questions go to his office he is more than willing to help. The final is a easy A all you have to do is keep track of everything you did. He wants things done his way and if you just go with it you will do fine.

Not sure how to describe Mr. Stewart without the word ridiculous. Fails whole classes, his instructions for assignments are never clear, and grades stupidly. Do one TINY thing wrong and you're going from an A to a C, no exceptions. Also unrealistic deadlines for group projects that cost you a quarter of your grade.
Professor Stewart is uniquely strict when it come to the format for all speeches. A often-repeated phrase of his is, "If the outline is wrong, the speech is wrong." Which means that if the outline has a mistake you will receive and F for that assignment, despite the quality of the work being otherwise perfect. This is just an example.

Stewart says on the first day of class to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. However it is hard to do this whenever his directions make no sense whatsoever. He doesn't teach speech, he teaches you how to write HIS outline. His grading is ridiculous, counts off MAJORLY for tiny errors. Made A's on all speeches, and kept good attendance. Made a D overall. This man is ridiculous. I made a B on my first speech and A's on my second and third. He failed me on my final because I forgot one item. Then he decided that somehow counts as an F and I only missed two classes and he reported I never went to class. If you can't fit anyone else in your schedule and you have to take him. I am currently taking Jazz and it is the hardest class! On my first speech I got a B+ on what he called a "great" speech and on speech two I got an F on a "well crafted speech." DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He gives no clarity so you have no idea what to expect from him! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!!
He is basis on giving speeches and isn't clear on what he what in this class so his grading is awful
He's a terrible professor. He is never clear on what he wants but demands you do what he asks. He does not grade fairly on speeches at all. You can never read the notes he leaves on your outlines and he never explains what he wants if you ask him. He talks more about drinking his "southern comfort" than lecturing and being helpful DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Stewart is confusing about what he wants. He says that he gives you everything you need to know on his website. However his website is a disaster full of broken links and mis-information that he changes without telling the class. He just gives you whatever grade he wants on your speeches without explaining why. If you can don't take him.
Do not skip class. His grading is unclear. When giving speeches, he gives you the grade that he wants not what the rubric gives. He says his website is clear but its a disaster. Do not take him.
Professor Stewart is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I didn't learn a single thing from his class. If your outlines aren't perfect, then you will get a bad grade. His final exam calls for you to BUY A CD and make a CD that includes every single reference, outline, and citation that you used throughout your speeches. Who even uses CDs???
Prof. Jazz is an extremely tough professor. I would not recommend taking him. His website is messy and his grading criteria is unclear. 0/10.
Nitpicks on little things, doesn't care about the actual work you do as long as it's formatted the way he wants you to.
Best advice is to just do things his way and if you have questions email him, do NOT just assume things are ok. Very picky, but made 2 C's and 2 B's on the speeches, made a few A's on outlines and references, turned in a pretty perfect final exam, didn't miss class, and got an A. NOT a hard class unless you hard-core procrastinate and skip.
Jazz is unclear of what he wants 100% of the time. He contradicts himself and requires your final to be on a CD or DVD.. he is stuck in the 2000's. There are 3 speeches, and along with those speeches you are to create an outline JUST LIKE his.. but don't worry, if it's perfect, he will still mark you off for things he cannot explain. DO NOT TAKE
Heard him tell a student, yes, I graded your paper incorrectly and you shouldve received a higher grade, but the grades already in and Im not changing it. I personally received a D on a speech where the only thing missing was the motivation for the speech. Says he will listen to grade disputes, but its in one ear and out the other.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS EVER. I dont know why I didnt look on here before I took this class but its biting me in the butt for not doing so. This class is a straight up joke. Youre screwed if you take it
He has unfair grading. He does not give helpful feedback or teach the things that he is expecting. He does not "teach" he shows videos and then leaves class. He also has the tendency to pass out grades then refuse to discuss them with you.
Dr. Stewart's class is extremely difficult. Not in that there's a lot of work, but because he's such a tough grader. The speech outlines have to be perfect or else you won't make a good grade on it. He seems like a really nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend taking his class. He is, however, very good about letting people see him after class.
Contradicts himself a lot. Talks down to you. Unfair at grading. He told me my thesis to a speech was good, but then after he graded it, he counted it wrong. SUPER picky about the outlines. If there's one minor flaw he counts a lot of points off. Also, falls asleep to his own videos.
90% of the work is due after fall break. Does not go by the university grading scale. Says hes willing to work with you, but is very biased on speech topics and will give you a failing grade if you are just a few seconds short on your speech.
He encourages you to go to him for help, however, there is always something lost in the communication, he never understands you when you ask questions, you have to repeat yourself several times, and his answers are always extremely vague. He is very contradictory to himself, and an extremely unrealistic grader. Take PC.
Jazz is an extremely difficult professor. Although difficult, it is possible to get an A or a B in his class easily. The most important part of this course is regularly meeting with Jazz. He is extremely unclear, and thinks the worst of his students when they ask questions. Despite this, if you go to him for help, you will make an A.
I cannot believe this man is still allowed to teach! I took his class 10 years ago, and can see he has not changed a bit. Every negative thing said here is 100% true. He is the sole reason I quit college and went to nursing school instead. It is widely apparent that Tech does not care about teacher complaints. Such a shame.
Extremely hard grading and unclear explanation to questions. I always want to miss class on speech day because of how hateful he is on the day you present. Gives feedback on speeches in front of the entire class. DO NOT TAKE!

Dr. Stewart is a good professor. However, there are some things he could improve on that's not the point. He honestly does care about his students but wants them to earn it. I enjoyed his class, he could be comical sometimes. Show Jazz respect and he will show you respect back, it's important to talk to him during office hours too. Would take again
Don't procrastinate. If any of his online links are broken, notify him when possible. Meet with him if ever confused on anything (even outlines), or if you need another viewpoint. Feedback from him can help you pass; ask again if it is confusing. Good professor, but you need to put in the effort and not treat the class like a completely free pass.
Listen to the guy. He will say things like, "Say the title of your speech after your attention getter", "Don't read or memorize your speech", etc. Do what he says, and come to class (mandatory attendance) and it will be one of the easiest A's ever. Just don't expect to learn anything. He doesn't teach you anything at all! He's really nice though!
