He is okay
Can be a bit ho-hum when lecturing, but has great suggestions for writing.
One of the most interesting classes I have had at SVSU
I learned a lot about sociolinguistics in his class. He's fun in class.
Becomes disgruntled when students say Mr. instead of Dr.
you do a lot of reading each week, but it's not too bad.
only two tests and two papers for your grade. tests are TOUGH!
Nice prof, but lectures were unclear. Books were of no help.
He has the best reading voice.
WAy too much reading in that class. Talk about an anxiety attack evry time I went to class.
Sully is a wonderful professor once you get to know him. He's a bit scary at first, but I think it's a way to thin out the class. I would take another course with him in a heartbeat!

Learned some in this class but he was very rude to students and not very helpful
good teacher... kind of a coot thought
If you do the reading every week, not too bad. He made me interested in The Iliad.
Grades his papers way too hard, tests aren't easy either. I would take a different professor for literature if possible.
Nice guy, book material doesnt coincide very well with lecture material, midterm and final are difficult. first time i had to struggle in a class in a while! If you try and ask him for help, you'll do fine.
Horrible horrible horrible...I recommend taking another teacher. He has favorite students and he hates others and he makes them both clear... He is rude and cruel to some of his students. TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER!

Sully is great. He requires you to read a lot, but he always keeps you interested. Come on, he made reading The Illiad fun.
Horrible. Tests were hard, had nothing to do with anything in the text. Boring classes, meaningless lecture.
I found this class to be very confusing and really didn't like Sullivan's teaching style. English is usually one of my favorite subjects and I had a very hard time with the papers in here. I am just not a fan of the types of materials read in this class
If you ask for help he will, He's very laid back. The final project is a little difficult though.
I don't know what everyone is so upset about, Sullivan was excellent. 3 papers, 2 exams. Keep up with the reading and pay attention in class and everything else comes easy! He is very helpful, too!
Horrible prof. Told me on the first day that I did not need to be in his class because I asked too many questions. we had to answer 150 questions a week about the reedings. I would definitely not recommend this class for ANYONE.
Those who say he's mean or whatever need some help. I think he was a great prof. I didn't necessarily like the actual class, but he was a good prof. Made things very interesting. And helped if anyone asked. Just need to be prepared to do some work.
He seems nice but when you go in front of class to explain difficult things that you don't understand, he makes fun of you if you don't get the right answers and makes you feel like crying. I was very offended!
He is a great Professor! He understands that not everyone is going to be a Linguistic. If you do the readings and do your best you will have no problems. He has a great accent!
He makes no sense. He gives no instructions and is the worst question answerer that I have ever heard. There is no structure and he expects that you know what he wants. I highly recommend avoiding him if at all possible.
I am a 4.0 student, I tested out of English, and I was on the newspaper...yet somehow "I don't know how to write." He's very unfair, you never know what he wants, and he grades harshly. DO NOT TAKE HIM IN A CLASS WHERE YOU HAVE TO WRITE IF YOU VALUE YOUR SOUL!
Dr. Sullivan is a tough grader and expects a very particular writing style. If your work is not exactly in the style he wants, you lose big points. He is also not afraid to make people look like an idiot in front of the class. Avoid him at all costs.
For those upset about how he expects a certain writing style, you all should really try his method instead of just complaining. I do in every single class I take, and IT WORKS. Best professor I've had at SVSU, and I've had several good ones. He knows what he's doing.
very nice guy. All you have to do is: read the assigned readings on time and attempt to answer the questions, and you'll do fine. (the questions are actually a good reading guide). just don't fall behind cause it's hard to catch up. Not a bad class; I hate lit. but it was surprisingly interesting!
This class is very tough but it's worked wonders on my writing skills. He demands a lot from his students but as long as you follow the writing style he wants, you'll do fine. The best part is he's very open to all opinions, as long as you support it, so you don't have to worry about him being bias.
He's a great professor and the class is fun; the readings are very interesting. All you do is keep a log answering questions about the reading, write two super easy papers, and take two exams. He's funny and very smart, and open to all interpretations of the text. I'd recommend this class to anyone!
He is difficult. He wants a very specific type of writing.
I didn't do well in his class, but he has a real passion for teaching, makes learning an enjoyable experience, and really tries to give students his individual time when they need it.
Unclear in what he wants. Open to all opinions. Demands alot out of you. If you work hard and make the corrections he advises you should end up with a good grade. Tough class, but I learned alot. Not an easy A.
I will admit you have to be a decent writer to do well in the class. But he is a very very good teacher and is very passionate. I would take him again, just plan on practicing your writing skills and don't be afraid to ask him for help. What i liked is he will talk each of your papers over with you so you know what he expects next paper.
Very easy class. Two papers, one presentation. Failed one test and still got an A....not quite sure what that means, but I'll take it!
He was very scary the first day-made half the class drop the class b/c he was quite the trip. He gets better though- as long as you do the homework, read the book, and hand things in on time, he's pretty easy-tests are hard- VERY passionate about Western Lit.- overall good teacher
Overall a good teacher. At first he is scary, but the class is very easy. Just do the three essays and homework. It should be an easy A.
He's a GREAT Prof. Loved the class and found it to be extremely thought provoking and all around a fun class to attend. He totally rocked my socks off!
Don't pay attention to what everyone in the early reviews say. Dr. Sullivan is a great teacher!
Getting through the Dante questions and writercises took a looooong time! The first 5 weeks we spend on Dante and he basically read to us from the book and elaborated on certain parts. After that, we worked in small groups to answer the questions for the other books. Two papers that were fairly interesting to write, and the tests are hard as hell
He was usually 5 mins late for class even when he demanded we be on time. This class is hard to follow. The exam are difficult and he wasn't terribly clear on our final project. He knows what he's talking about, but the classwork is a bit difficult for what he's trying to teach. I'd look for another professor.
Stay away from this class!!!! Very hard material, especially when it comes to the tests. He is very unclear and intimidating. He even makes you look stupid in front of the class.
Professor who demands students to pay attention and participate in class. If you are the type that likes to mess around and do your assignments at the last minute.....you better skip this prof. If asked, is very helpful. Very good at getting student to take resposibility and LEARN. Recommend for the mature student.
Sullivan is a tough cookie. He expects a lot of you, demanding a boatload of reading and homework. On the other hand, he really does care about how you perform.
Expects you to read his mind when it comes to assignments. Extremely anal retentive when it comes to assignments, if they arent done the one single way they are wrong. Watch your step if you take him.
The class itself is pretty tough, lots of reading and homework. However, he does make pretty boring reading material very interesting. He has a different sense of humor that he fits right into the reading. If your a slacker dont take this class and it is important to have good attendance.
Very interesting teacher, hard class, difficult books read, but he gives short answer questions that help clarify the books a lot. Be sure to keep up with the reading or you will fail his pop quizzes! Class is boring, all he did was read us the books and clarify difficult sections.
pronunciation is awful. This is pretty tough class.
I took his James Joyce and Dante class when he taught in Italy and it was one of the best classes I took in college. The content is hard but he has a great passion for his teaching and really wants you to learn. One of the best professors I've ever had. His class is difficult but worth it! He made me not only love Dante but also understand it :-)
I really enjoyed this class! He has a very dry and quirky sense of humor and it helps to keep the class interesting. He goes over the material thoroughly before exams. He's very big on attendance and you WILL be marked down for missing more than 3ish classes. I learned a lot in his class and had fun doing so :)
Nice teacher and pretty funny. A little scattered when it comes to the notes, but it all comes together and makes sense. Tests are pretty difficult, but he usually has a curve. Will go out of his way to make sure you do well, as long as you show him you care about the class.
The class itself was not that great, but he didn't make it any easier. All he did was read to us.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He goes through the material way too fast. When I met with him for an office hour he listened to opera music and pretty much ignored me. He doesn't help AT ALL. Tests are tough but infrequent. He picks favorites and is a jerk to everyone else. Worst prof I've had.
Incredibly intelligent guy. If you don't want to do a good amount of homework (although it's fairly easy as long as you pay attention and read the books) don't take him. Super understanding and has a witty sense of humor. Exams are pretty tough- mostly quotations so you have to know the books.
This class was pointless. He had us read and write notes and then 2 hrs of his class was spent on him reading to us. Very boring. His tests are ridiculous, its 50?s on identifying who said what quotes...unrealistic and memorizing 12 lines. No study guide. When e-mailing him, he does not respond back. He is unclear on his grading as well.
You have to keep a handwritten log of short answer questions and short essays that you complete every week. The tests are almost unbearable unless you have an AMAZING memory. However, he has a great personality and that's what made going to class kind of worth it.
This guy is really, really weird. His odd personality really distracts from the class sometimes. He will literally ramble about one page of a book for an entire class. Most of the class sessions are totally pointless. He gives an insane amount of work and never tells you your grade in the class and doesn't use Vspace. He grades pretty hard.
One of the best professors I have ever had. In fact, Dr. Sullivan is one of the best people I have ever met! Is there a lot of work? Yes, but I understand literature better because of it.
Dr. Sullivan is amazing! He is one of the best people I have ever met. Thank you, Sulli!
Explains Iliad by chapter which is very helpful. Actually made the class interesting. Log questions are important, does pop quizzes so do them and be familiar with them. Tests are mostly over who said what quotes in the books and memorizing 12 lines, which is not difficult if you give yourself time. Expects good work/a lot of reading, but doable.
Great class, good professor, loved the teaching style. However you never know what your grade is in the class until grades are finalized. I am an all A student and received a C. Needless to say I'm not very happy. Did every assignment including extra logs and still almost failed. It's a risk taking this class, wouldn't do it again!
Loads on the reading and short answer questions right off the bat. You have 2 or so writing assignment which aren't to bad but he grade some what harshly. He talks about a lot of back ground information not completely connecting to the material. His exams consist of 50 quotes you must name the person who says it, short answer, then page long essay.
Dr. Sullivan is very old school professor. He doesn't use vspace and will not tell you your grade. There is a lot of work that comes with this class. You have to write a 1200 word paper then he makes you cut that paper down to 500 words. Its pointless! I personally hated the way he teaches the class. I will not take him again!
Dr. Sullivan is very intelligent and I learned so much in his class. There is a good amount of homework in the class but as long as you read the books and do the homework you will do well in the class. Quiz every week but every question is directly off of the homework log. Good class, learned a lot. I would take him again.
Nice enough but when you ask questions or try to answer his questions he makes you feel stupid. Difficult class, but if you pay attention to what he says in class, you'll be fine. Isn't very clear, you really need to listen. His biggest issue is that he needs to be more specific with his lectures and instructions. Lots of hw and quizzes every week
Be prepared for a quiz every week on the new chapters of the book. 4 questions sink or swim. Usually he made things clearer, but frequently he didn't seem to have the answers to his own questions. His grading of the quizzes makes no sense. You'll get out early a lot in a 3 hour class. Liked him, but it's a lot of reading and studying terms.
Lots of reading, lots of out of class work. Instead of traditional HW based on in-class lectures, you read from a book and complete at least 4pgs of writing a week to fill out logbook entries according to book material. Then, video lectures in class. Kind of confusing set up, but passable. Helpful, may offer EC, exams mostly short answers.
LOTS OF READING!!! Advice, downloading app that reads the book to you while you answer questions. He makes the class worth the reading.
Very knowledgeable and credible. A true scholar who isn't superficial or narcissistic at all. Over all good man
Sully is very approachable despite being old. He reads to you because the western classics were meant to be read and he does a great job helping relate the text to you. There is a lot of reading in this course and you must think critically, but I received a solid A without problems.
Personally incredibly intelligent, knows his field extraordinarily well, however not very good at communicating his knowledge of the field on to his students. Did have clean definitions of concepts for us, but expected students to understand. Quizzes every class on the ready, but before we had a chance to ask questions or discuss the information.
He might not be the best when it comes to updating our grades or letting us know how we are doing in the class individually, but he does care highly about how we perform. If you talk to him after class or email him, he will let you know where you stand in the class. He gives a huge workload and lots of reading, but he's always available for help.
Dr. Sullivan is a horrible teacher. You have to read from the story and given vague questions to answer. The next day, you will take a quiz on four of those questions. Also, he doesnt give a study guide for the exams, so youre unprepared. Hell ask about questions, and if you ask, he laughs and doesnt answer them. Drop it! Worst professor ever!
I really enjoyed Dr. Sullivan as a professor. You definitely have to read the material so you're prepared for the in-class quizzes, but you just need a basic understanding because he'll explain it further. His exams are a breeze and there are only two essays which he grades really easily. Read the material, participate in class and you'll be fine!
Professor Sullivan loves what he does. He reads a lot to you in class which is nice because you can understand the text better and he makes it interesting! He was also very helpful, compassionate, and flexible when I went through a family tragedy. I would take his classes any day!
He tries his hardest to keep people engaged but is hard to follow. He does not use Canvas and rarely responds to email, which is frustrating if you want to know your grade. Every class has a quiz that is based on some random, obscure thing from the book, and he does not give you time to write down notes. A lot of work and hard exams too.
Professor Sullivan doesnt use canvas. In my world Lit class he gave a quiz every week (questions off packet of assigned reading), gave a mid term and final, and every class was going through reading questions. Easy class, tough exams. I got a C on the first exam and wasnt sure on the last but ended with an A-. Extra credit is easy!
Nightmarish. I never at any point knew my grade (despite directly asking him). There is no online resource like canvas and worse he is terrible about responding to calls, emails, and even just showing up on time for his office hours. Quizzes are hard and homework is maddening. Should have dropped while I had the chance.
