Good overall prof.

Really hard teacher, but it will be good if you are an engineer or intend to take a lot of math. I would recommend taking Deis or someone but he is a smart guy and a new teacher who tries very hard and puts in a lot of effort. his structure has improved over the semester and I think he is pretty decent now.
Tough course all around. Will help if needed, amusing more often than not. Good luck.
this guy is the biggest **** in the world. He doesn't fully answer questions that people ask in class, and his tests are far off based from the material covered in class. He docks points on everything of work in which you don't show. Hope you like to show your work, including easy arithmatic, if you take this class.
I agree he is a okay if u have a lot of math in your future, but I wouldnt take him for any other reason. I think the last time I didnt get an A in a class was 2nd grade, but Im pulling a B/C in this class. He IS extremely helpful though, just too worried about giving away the answer at times, even on the homework. Tests are very hard.very hard.
The tests seem like a foreign language, have little to do with the lecture material. A regular "A" math student, I'm now getting a C or a D. Watch out, and show your work, he will take off points for not showing simple addition.
He is the worst math teacher ever. He lectures math, without variation. he asks if we get it, but if we ask a question he is unable to answer. the tests have very little to do with the lecture. Calculators are not allowed on the tests. homework every day, required. all we'd do is sit in a room for a hour in silence while he talked.
doesn't actually teach...
Better teching would help
I completely agree with most of these comments. He his a horrible teacher if you plan on getting a good grade. One of the strictest graders ive ever seen, and the first test was a nightmare. Doesnt like to give away answers to anything, and the guy is in love with proofs.
Super hard class. Is willing to help out if you go to his office during his office hours. Flexible if you need to take the exam another time. Gives graded homework almost every day. Lots of it. Lots and Lots. Spent 12 hours on one assignment more than once. Tests are difficult too. I was lucky to get out with a C...my only C in college. Hard class.
His lectures are hard to understand. When you ask a question he leads you around in circles or starts answering it but never finishes. The tests are very hard and include very little of the homework. TDQs are ridiculous, most people can't figure them out even though you "just have to open your book." Don't take him if u have trouble with math.
Very hard class,a very hard grader.Sometimes he would start answering questions & never finish them b/c he 'didnt want to ruin it'. i would not recomend this teacher. I always got A's in math & i ended up dropping this course after 2 months. also dont recomend for people who never took calc b4-makes it more complicated than it has to be.
calculus is hard enough as it is and he makes it way more complicated than it needs to be. can't seem to generalize new concepts and makes his notes confusing and impossible to study from later. ridiculously picky when grading homework and docks a lot of points which hurts your grade. do not recommend this professor.
I have no idea how he even got a job anywhere being a teacher. He doesn't teach you the material at all, he expects you to learn it on your own and he just talks about the same thing day after day. His exams are nothing like the homework and the homework is ridiculous. He takes a lot of points off for simple mistakes. NEVER TAKE HIM FOR ANYTHING
I only have one thing to say.... the class average for the final grade in his Calc I class was a 61%..... and thats with the bottom third dropping out, and with most having allready taken a calc class.
Don't even think about taking him if you just took precalc. Very hard to learn from and the tests are alot harder than what you understand in the homework. I had to drop with a W because it was impossible for me to pass.
Tough professor! If you haven't tried too many proofs or infinite series before he'll make it a REAL eye opener. The first half of the class was easy, but the infinite series is where he loses most of his classes. He pushes through the material too fast for most students. So if you have him for a professor, GOOD LUCK!
Very hard, but extremely helpful and cares about his students. Has a really corky kind of hummor, which made me laugh. His class is still very challenging and be prepared to sleep with your text book if you want to pass.
Just one word of advise. Do not take this professor no matter what. Go to the math dept and demand to get into another professor's class because you will learn absolutely nothing in his Swenson's class. I dont know how he got a TEACHING degree.
It was a miracle that I got a B. Class averages for tests were either F's or middle D's. The final was the easiest part of his class.
discrete math- notes are unorganized, then a cram for new material, has no idea how to interact or that we dont have 6 hours for homework.only grades three problems each time, then tears those apart. test are ridiculous and are harder homework questions. will not give a straight ansewer, im a math major and will not get even a c.
Tests have nothing to do with any examples done in class or the homework. Notes are ambiguous at best. No calculator on tests: what's up with that? It is supposed to be a math class. Very poor professor unless you are already a genius.
DO NOT TAKE, EXPECTS YOU TO TEACH YOURSELF, VERY HARD TESTS, POOR NOTES....TERRIBLE
Cares about his students, but is a fairly tough grader. If you know what you're doing you'll be fine. He's pretty funny sometimes too.
Good teacher. Yes his tests are hard but if you study the homework and book you CAN get an A. He loves what he teaches and explains it pretty well. If you show up to class, do the homework (not the night before) and all the TDQ's you can pass and probably earn an A or B. Yes he wont specifically answer a ? in class but he will help you along.
Good professor despite his rating. writes hard exams and grades fairly. office hour help isn't that great since he won't lead you right to the answer but makes you figure it out with helpful hints. gave me a c- when i earned a d+ so he isn't all bad.
People complain too much. Sure he is hard, but some of the best teachers here at UWP re the hard ones. This is Calc3 not algebra I, of course it will be hard. Just do the homework, study the book, and you'll pass. At least he tries to be humorous!
Despite his ratings, he is the best math teacher. Always cracking jokes and making sure that you understand the math before moving on. In his class you can ask a question anytime during the class period and not feel stupid for doing so. Office hours arn't that helpful because he lets you struggle before giving you a hint, so ask in class.
He was very knowledgeable on the material covered, which lead to problems. He didn't know how to present material in a way that students could grasp. Tests were a nightmare. One positive thing is his interest in student input and ability to make class enjoyable despite its difficulty. You left ready to explore the topics on your own time.
Math major's have him, its inevitable. Horrible tests with no notes, 3+ hours in class. 50+ takehome . Never gives a straight answer ever, unless you're his favorites. doesnt care about your grade, and will give no leeway, one point below a C, is automatically a D. talks either to the floor or the wall, examples are incomprehensible without a phd.
Horrible professor!you could probably teach yourself better than him. He teaches it his way, which is NOT the best way (especially when finding limits and derivatives). Ask him questions and all you get is babble and no answers because he doesn't know how to explain the material from the book.Don't take him if you already has some idea of the class
I don't think anyone in the class ended with an A. Quirky/funny personality, picky grader, need to use a tutor because book/class lack examples, 4 exams (45%) + final (30%) and weekly homework (25%). Was his 1st time teaching this class. Out of class 3 hrs a week to pass, 4-6 to get a C, 7-15 to get a B, 15+ maybe an A.
Avoid at all costs. Gives bad examples in class that will barely help you on homework or exams. His class average for the final was 44% That's saying something.
Awful.
Avoid this man! Tries to speak elloquently by articulating every word, resulting in a "round-about way" of teaching the concepts that need to be taught; not straightforward at all! Will never directly help you with homework if you have a question. Exams are brutal, as the homework questions are unrelatable. Better off teaching yourself from book!
Very helpful, he really likes to help students. Has lots of office hours and welcomes any questions in or out of class.
hardest grader doesn't help you and doesn't care to help you
I had him for Discreet Math. The class was definitely tough, but Swenson made it more fun than it would have been with most other teachers. He likes to help with questions, but he wants you to figure out the answers - he won't just give them to you without you doing some work first. He's definitely tough, but I enjoyed having him.
read the book, start homework early, ask questions and understand that it is your responsibility to learn the material. He is very smart and knows his stuff. Great lecturer.
Tough class. I thought i somewhat understood calculus until I took his course.
I would advise staying away from Swenson unless you enjoy hard test which you are likely to fail. Class average for the tests was 60%. He is a really tough grader, so beware.
My favorite professor at UW-Platteville. He is a great lecturer, and He is very good at preparing you for what he puts on quizzes and exams. If you show up to class and do the homework, you will do well in his class.
Great Professor. Hard grader.
He teaches math in a way that I can understand. Normally I suck at math. I even got D's in high school math classes. However in his Mathematical Explorations class I really felt like I could understand the things he was teaching. He's passionate about what he teaches and he does his best to make sure you understand the material he presents.
Great teacher, Calc is hard to begin with but Swenson gives good examples and proves why it works at the same time. He always stops and asks if theres questions. Very funny but doesn't get off topic with material. Never used office hours but he encourages you to drop in. Amazing professor, I recommend him highly for Calc
Extremely tough grader, will take off multiple points for tiny mistakes. I suggest not taking this course
A good professor if you're willing to put in the work. He has some interesting ways of teaching, but overall they are helpful and fairly easy to understand.
If you work hard, you will pass with at least a B. Utilize his office hours because homework is lengthy and difficult, and he will make you work to arrive at the answer. Exams can be tough. Go to class, ask questions, and study the answers frequently. He also leaves good feedback, and has a very dorky but interesting sense of humor. I liked him.
I've had Swenson for Calc 3 and for Diff Eq, and in both classes his style of teaching was very helpful. As for any math class, completing homework is a necessity to do well in the class. He is pretty helpful if you ask a question outside of class.
I had Dr. Swenson for Calc 1 and Dif Eq. For me, he seemed to be an absolutely fantastic professor. By reviewing the homework, I was able to get an A in Dif Eq. He tries to have an active class to keep everyone more involved and better understanding. Be prepared for many funny shirts, and some math jokes as well.
Awesome professor!! He obviously cares about his students and loves his job. Calc 2 is so hard but he made it more fun and a littler easier. He keeps lectureds interesting and makes you want to come to class. Funny dude. Make sure you go to class, and do the homework. Tests are hard but he's super helpful inside and outside of class. Take this man!
The difficulty of the class is not on Dr. Swenson. His grading is some of the most lenient I have ever seen. He gives a lot of partial credit. His exams are pretty tough and he grades homework every week. I enjoyed my time in Dr. Swenson's class.
Dr. Swenson is a great professor. I just wish I was better with math and memory.
I have had Dr. Swenson for three upper-level math classes (past the calculus sequence). I can't recommend him highly enough. His lectures are clear, his tests are fair, his homework closely aligns with the tests, and he is very helpful in office hours. He definitely cares about his students!
I had james swenson for calc2, calc 3, and Dif Eq and highly reccomend him. His lectures are fast but he always stops for questions. Homework similar to exams, all problems from the book. Hilarious and fun to be around, very helpful in office hours.
He was 1 of 2 teachers for the class. Explained some of the mathematics amongst other things. If you havent taken Calc 1 yet this class might be rough. Theres a lot of homework, not a lot of problems but time consuming. Be ready to go into office hours. In lecture they explain the math but dont give the students a chance to do it for themselves.
What can i say, he is a calc 3 professor. If you have a very hard time with math sometimes his wording is confusing. other than that is fine. a little picky for grading though.
This prof is always there to help you learn math. Discrete math is a difficult topic for some students and the course is packed full with various concepts and exercises to help you learn those concepts. If you take this course, you will need to put in many hours a week to ace it, but Dr. Senson is there to help you.
This was the toughest and most rough course I ever took. Sadly it seems in his classes that he focuses more upon concepts not relevant to what will be on your exams and does not prepare you very well for what is to come. The final was even worse since the majority of it took from stuff it seemed we never covered in class.
Never missed a class. The hw and tests are really hard. Gives examples but only the general ones, no application examples so when you see them again it's hard to apply. Utilize office hours! Office was often cramped with 5-10 students asking for help at once because people were confused and made it hard to get one on one help.
Very nice person in general, but makes his exams extremely difficult and any homework assignments will take you 2-3 hours at best. Many people in his office hours every day.
Terrible professor. Gives hard homework, but the exam problems are even harder. Definitely don't take if you dont have to.
Lectures never matched the homework and homework never matched the tests. Very set in doing things his way and he acts like a total snob.
It's true what everyone is saying about his homework not matching his exams at all. The exams are brutal. 10 questions, each with material seemingly unrelated to what was on the homework, which are seemingly unrelated to what was taught in class. Tough grader and when I asked for help he basically said he didn't like my tone.
This was the hardest class I have taken so far. Professor Swenson is a great person. However, I did not enjoy my time in his class. While he tried to make class more enjoyable by including jokes, the homework and exams were incredibly difficult and time consuming. Material covered in class did not help much with homework or exams. I don't recommend
I took this class when the school had to transition to online and it went smoothly, he was able to provide good lectures and was always avaible if you needed help. The course itself is hard but he makes it a little more enjoyable with his humor and how he delivers lessons.
Overall, alright experience. He will assist you outside of class when you need help. He makes you work for the answer. Course was online, however, he handled it very well. Each week was a new module. Not too bad of an experience. Would reccomend if looking for a Precalc professor.
I had Professor Swenson when this class went online. During the semester I was in his office most weeks. He always was great at helping outside of class. His lectures were fun and made sense. He assigned a lot of homework, but not more than normal for a calc class. The final he wrote was very difficult and the average was low.
Dr. James Swenson is a very nice man, and a very good teacher in class, but when it comes to grading he takes it to a high degree. You will have more homework in class than you will in any other, and he will quiz and test you over subjects that was never once discussed in class, and sometimes will not even be found in the book.
The only way he knows how to teach is by giving out homework, if you don’t get it right away, then it is gonna be a horrible semester for you. Would rate lower if I could.
I really liked his lecture style and he was always avaible outside of class to answer questions. I went to his office hours a few times and every time he made me feel welcome and was really willing to help. He didn't make me feel stupid for asking dumb questions. The one downside was he did give a lot of homework and exams were outside of class.
Why does UW platt have no good math professors.
Dr. Swenson is my favorite math teacher that I've had here. His lectures are engaging and well done, and his dry humor is fantastic.
His lectures are very informative and interesting, 25% of grade is homework and quizzes, and has good dad humor.
What people say about the exams not matching the homework are true. He's a nice guy and teaches ok, but the exams are brutal. You may go into an exam thinking you know what you are doing only to get a D or worse. The final was even harder than the regular exams and the average was very low. Proceed with caution.
Had to take him since he was my only option and calc 2 fills up fast... if I could go back, I would wait a semester to get a good professor. Homework is insane to "prepare you for the exam" but then little on the homework is relevant to the exams. Ended up with a good grade, but it also came with a lot of stress and self-teaching.
Absolutely my favorite professor I've had here. Has a good sense of dry humor. Expect to do a lot of homework. Really lenient grader, gives lots of partial credit. Very good at explaining what/how you did something wrong. Would love to take him again
The class was difficult as was expected. The Professor made sure we knew his office hours for each day and how to reach him outside of those hours. Always willing to answer questions. Accepted late work on the take-home quizzes, no late work for webwork. Very important to attend lecture, he doesn't post the examples we'd work on in class.
Good lectures. Goes through "famous" problems and into the history of the math sometimes which isn't necessary but is interesting if you are into that. Helpful during office hours.
He explained the material relatively well in his lectures. He provided lots of opportunity to get easy points for your grade. The exams are quite tough, a lot of them are 20 times harder than the endless amounts of homework assigned. Overall decent prof, just wish he taught differently and the exams weren't so tough.
Dr. Swenson is great professor. His lectures are clear and consise while teaching the concepts. There is a lot of homework but doing it teaches you the niche parts of calc 3. Office hours are a big help and he will always take the time to answer any questions. The exams and quizes are challenging but he is generous with partial credit on both.
