Very nice teacher, is very easy to approach
No Comments
very good anthropological stats teacher. extremely organized and willing to help.
Good teaching. Tests are pretty easy, so long as you at least review the work before going to take the test.
hottie!!!
An easy stats course. If you just put in a bit of review time, you will find the tests pretty easy.
The text book was handy, his notes were always on the internet, it was great. If you happened to miss you could always get the notes :) The class was useful and he was comprehensible
James is a great instructor he makes stats easy to understand. His assignments are really good review and his tests are fairly easy.He actually managed to make a stats class enjoyable.
He was a great instructor and very clear about all topics. He was helpful if you needed assistance and very approachable.
I am NOT a math lover...and James made this stats course so interesting. I actually understand everything now, more so than I did when I took stats in high school. His lectures are clear, he gives good examples and lots of practice questions for the test. Also, the textbook we used is extremely useful and serves as good practice. Overall, great.
I really enjoyed James' class. I am not a math person in any sense, and he made this stats class really enjoyable. I understood everything as he gives good examples and is very clear. Also, there are lots of practice questions in the textbook
James is a great teacher. For Research methods he is fair in marking and makes everything very clear. He is also good at explaining things if you don't understand. You do however have to attend class as he doesn't use a textbook (though he does put power points on blackboard they aren't clear enough on their own). I highly recommend him!
Worst teacher I have ever had. He is a nice person, but teaching is not his thing. I didn't learn anything from his this semester and when i asked for help he told me I need to figure it out on my own. He has a lot of slides, but they leave you confused and with more questions than answers. Not impressed at all!!
James is a very tough marker but if you learn from your mistakes on the early assignments it will get easier. His tests were solely based off of his lectures and slides, so you must attend class or you'll be lost! James went beyond guiding me in the course he really pushed me towards reaching my full potential academically.
James is a good teacher, he does explain things well but occasionally goes off on tangents. I find it a bit difficult to keep up with all of the chapter reading he does assign however. But what I do enjoy is he keeps the class motivated!
James Taylor is a very clear and helpful professor. He is always willing to help and always goes out of his way to make sure that we are aware of other things happening on campus. He always makes time for his students and makes sure that every topic is clear. I would recommend him every time!
I don't like stats very much but I did pretty good in this class. He makes it clear what you need to know. If you go to class you will do okay. You do need to put in LOTS of extra time outside of class to complete pre-labs which he does not give class time to do. This was frustrating because I was putting in probably 6 hours a week for this class.
Professor Taylor's notes are a little dull, but it obvious he is knowledgable about the subject. He went out of his way to help me in my degree, and is a very caring prof! Must attend class for his lecture notes because they are tested
James was not for me personally. I like my notes clean and concise and a textbook to reinforce the material. I did not experience these things and sometimes found him confusing and even aloof. He is extremely knowledgeable about the material so that is a positive and I've noticed he can be very helpful with university and career progression.
James is am amazing teacher though his lectures are long and a little dull, he does make it his best to make it interesting & knowledgeable. Everything he does is fair and ensures his students know what to take in the future, he cares about his students and it shows. But, need to go to class for his notes because it'll be on the test.
His teaching style wasn't for me. He's extremely boring not take if you like to participate in class
James is a great professor who has the best interest of his students in mind. His lectures can be long and boring but are helpful for the exams. There is no term paper for this course which is nice. James is quite approachable for additional help with the content. His exams are relatively simple as long as you attend class; he is a fair marker.
James is an awesome prof. He always stays on topic, covers what you need to know and applies the material to real life examples so its easy to remember when you are taking the exam. He does give "in depth" lecture material at the end of class so its probably best that you go to class because he adds a question per in depth lecture on the exam.
Good prof and clearly knows his stuff. If you study, read what he assigns and attend lectures then you will be fine!
Lectures were a bit long but he knew his stuff. The grade was based solely on tests and a bit of research experience. If you read and actually study, you'll do fine.
If you have James for intro psych, you might find it dry. I think that's just because of the content though. Any other class I've had James in has been great, he is very helpful and understands the material very well. He makes you work for your grade though, no slacking, which should be expected in any class required for your major.
no no for me
James is an amazing psychology proff, he ensures success for all his students by constantly providing personal feedback. He always quickly responds to any emails and answers questions respectfully and thourougly. Great proff, hopefully get him in some higher level classes.
He teach well in this class. I had research method with him and he was awful!! But he did a very good job teaching this class :) I recommend taking stats or intro psych with him
This class is going to be hard. So expect to work hard.. but for James, I thought he was a really good teacher, but it was hard because he always wanted you to look for help somewhere else, which is most likely expected in grad school. Though me and him did not really get along, I do think mostly for others, he is a great teacher.
Really enjoyed this class! He knows his stuff and likes seeing everyone succeeding to their own abilities. Lectures were a bit heavy, but as long as you know the material, applications and theory, you're good to go. Tests were a little abstract but if you value good marks, you'll know to study. Not a class to slack off in.
James is incredible! He cares deeply about his students, helping first years out with advice and future endeavours. His tests are all lecture-related and he has 1 specific question on each class on the tests, so you must go to class. He's super supportive and helpful when needed.
James is a great professor, he is very helpful and approachable. It is clear what he expects and he is very fair with his marking. Lecture heavy but still interesting to listen to.
James creates unreasonable test questions. Reading his slides and the book will not prepare you to answer his ridiculous midterm questions. While taking this class as well as 2000 level PSYCH courses, this class was the lowest mark with sufficient understanding and studying of the material solely due to his abstract questions. Horrible tester.
He tries to make classes interesting and worthwhile. As long as you attend class grades should come easily. He cares about student success and is up for answering any types of questions students could have. He's super approachable as well. One of my favourite profs this semester.
Such a genuine, kind person. Cares about his students and always open to chatting about concerns. Advice: do not miss a single class, take advantage of portfolio work to boost grade, learn from the tutorial quizzes (they are the hardest part and lowest part of everyones grade) and don't worry - advanced stats is not that scary!!
Want to be haunted by Stats? If so, take this class! Its like a horror movie on repeat. Lectures are confusing at best. James is nice, and helpful for personal issues, but its impossible to meet with him in person. The text is dreadful. Instead of scaling exams, he should make them reasonale. Everything seems like an excessive make work project.
James is a great teacher. He is funny and makes the class interesting. However, I found his test to be quite challenging. The multiple choice are super tricky and you have to know how to apply the topics to real life situations. There are parts of the textbook he doesnt go over in class and tests you on. You have to put a lot of work in.
Advance stats is the hardest course I have taken. Forget the quizzes no one does well but if you really work on the portfolios you grade will be fine. Midterm and final are fair but hard. James is very understanding and a nice guy.
Pros: Cares about students, gives advice about grad school, covers materials well, good at explaining things Cons: Test questions based on material covered only in class, very lecture heavy (but still pretty easy to listen to) Overall, would recommend him. He's a great guy, and the class was really good.
James is very knowledgable. He presents course materials in a very broad sense and expects you to be very specific when it comes to using/explaining terms with your assignments/projects and exams. Prepare to read a lot. He can be very nice but forces you to work hard for a good grade.
James is a clear and thorough prof. He's easy to understand and won't hesitate to re-explain things if necessary. It's clear that he truly cares about student success, which is something that isn't often seen in profs.
James is an exceptional professor and is very knowledgable in his field, however, his lectures were super dry (most likely due to the content) He is very caring and even congratulated me for doing well on my final. Another warning, he is a hard marker for written responses on exams. I'd often get a 90 on the MC but barely pass the written portion.
Personality wise hes good. But honestly hes one of the most intimidating psych prof here at mru. You can tell he is very intelligent and knows a lot about psych/stats. Just be ready to put in extra effort when you take his class. Do textbook readings.
Tests heavy
Read before class
James is the bomb. You just have to read the textbook and attend class. It's university, if that wasn't what you expected, why are you bothering.
Taylor is a caring professor and wants you to do well. But the class itself is lecture heavy and he includes things in tests that are part of lectures and not apart of the textbook. He likes to call them his "in-depths". You basically have to go to every class and read before every class.
he genuinely cares about his students but tests are 50/50 based on lecture material and textbook material so you basically have to teach yourself half the test material since he usually doesnt cover it in the lecture. just make sure you keep up with the material and do notes every night
used a free textbook which was amazing. clear about expectations on tests and work. exams are written and multiple choice. some multiple choice questions have funny choices which made the class so much better. good feedback. theres a major project, oral presentaion, and a survey project. tests and weekly quiz, peer grading mixed with his own.
he gives you chances to do better with his MANY writing assignments. he actually did a lot more than most profs with the online and he was always prepared with recorder lectures and i appreciated his organization most didnt have. literally if u dont read the text book, you wont do good. dont skip on the easy marks he gives w the little assignments.
There's a heavy workload in this class. However, it's clear that everything this prof does is to set you up for success later on. So take advantage of him as a resource, he's super caring and helpful. And do the assigned readings if you want to do well on the exams!
he was great but there were just so many writing assignments on top of all the studying you had to do online. it was definitely a lot because this was the first semester online but he did do a good job of staying organized. don't miss out on the assignments tho cuz you will regret it at the end of the course. just do the work even tho it's lots.
Insanely nice and caring professor. You have to watch all of the lecture videos outside of class time and participate in group discussions in class. If you do not read the textbook you will not pass this class! Does use a pass/fail system on writing assignments, but has a clear grading criteria. All-in-all he is an amazing professor.
I liked him as a prof! I think he's really helpful and a good guy. Weekly quizzes (at least pre-COVID), decently challenging. Group experiment project. Don't do the language topic it's more confusing than it looks.
This is an ADVANCED stats course and he's the only one who teaches it so good luck! This class is NO JOKE THE HARDEST COURSE in terms of course material and the amount of work you need to do to be successful. I spent about 20 hr/week on this class. Just make sure to keep up on everything and ask him for help and you'll do good. He's intense, beware
If you're going into advanced stats be prepared for the toughest course of your undergrad. James designs the course to challenge students and prepare them for grad school. He cares about students success and puts in a ridiculous amount of effort to helping us grasp the concepts. Basically, it's the best and worst course in the psych program.
PSYC4412 is by far the hardest course I've ever taken, but James tries his best to make it easier for us students. This course was taken in the Fall 2020 semester, and James took a lot of our feedback about how the course was being presented to heart and made changes along the way to reflect that. Lots of respect for students, and truly cares!
James is one of the best profs Ive had at MRU, hes passionate and cares about his students! Also, just a nice guy. Advanced Stats was the hardest thing Ive done (20hrs a week) but he is there to make sure you pass.
So because it's a 4000 stats class, it's really tough, but with Jamie, he gives you everything you could need to pass it. It's tough because of the content, not because of the prof, and he's super nice and really helpful. More than once, I've emailed him really late and he's responded. A really good prof for a hard course!
Hes very wanting to help but there is a lot of stuff needed to do for this class so be prepared. If you try hard he will see that and help or grade you accordingly.
James as a person seems to be nice, but trust me if you do not put 110% of your time in this class than your not going to pass. in majority of my other classes i have an 80-90% average they are all writing classes. he is extremely picky, as well as testing is on another level of stress. manage your time around this class. thats all i can say.
never disliked a prof more. Extremely long lectures but everything he says you never know if its going to be on the midterm or not so you have to listen to this agony for an hour and a half straight. picky marker as well. and if you think you are on track, think again an assignment he never talked about is due.
Advanced stats was my third course with Jamie, and it definitely was a challenge. Jamie knows the nature of the course and genuinely wants all the students to do well. That being said, it is an honors-level class and an honors-level skill set and work ethic are expected. Jamie is extremely bright and willing to help, so use him as a resource.
Jamie is a really solid teacher, his classes are not easy but he recognizes when you put in the work. Available for support when you need it. A tough but fair grader - if you disagree on something he is always willing to listen to you. Respectful and fair
I'm so glad I am not in honors & will never take a course with Jamie again. He's a pretty good teacher when it comes to content, but he's a hard, picky marker and the amount of work for a 2000 level course is insane. The class had more assignments than my other four combined. He is very quick to respond if you contact him, but that's it.
Since he's the only research prof, you're gonna have to take his course. He is extremely disorganized and posts content at random intervals, usually his extremely long and boring lectures. There are a ton of tiny assignments worth next to nothing that are easy to do well on, and then two exams and a group paper that he marks impossibly hard on.
Jamie is a very supportive and approachable prof. He is passionate about teaching and wants his students to be successful. Make sure you go to class and read the assigned readings if you want to do well. This course is a ton of work, so be mindful of that when making your class schedule.
This prof is obviously incredibly knowledgeable which adds a lot of richness to his lectures. I learned a ton that wasn't in the text and finished the class feeling properly set up for my degree. Tests are pretty hard but attending class and reading the text goes a long way. Lots of work but you'll learn a lot in his class.
I had beef with that guy
I've had Jamie for 3 courses throughout university and there's a reason why. I'm currently in his advanced statistics course and its hard. but the people complaining about him don't seem to understand WHY he's picky. he's picky because he's a professor trying to make scholars. not just students. you have to work for it. life's not easy
if you want to teach yourself most of the course cause teaches prob 5% of what you actually need to know. He is an unreasonably hard marker on written parts of tests and on written assignments. He is nice but overall do not recommend taking this class with him.
His tests can be hard but there's completion based stuff to balance it out. Lectures are interesting and he's clear about what he's testing for and the assignments actually help you understand. You can email him at 2am with a random question and he responds right away. He starts every class reviewing upcoming deadlines so you never get behind.
Jamie's class is really insightful and easy learn in. He structures his lectures well by reviewing upcoming deadlines as well as information to help us in the future outside of his class. Lectures are engaging, assignments are easy grades, tests were moderately difficult but he prepped us for them well. He is easy to reach at any time.
This teacher was the worst teacher i have ever had in my 3 years of university. the amount of work required for this class is unbelievable as well as his disorganization regarding quiz material is astounding. His lecture are some times useful and sometime just a waste of time. lecture material is not posted online so Goodluck. Lecture=dry.
Mr.Taylor has probably been my best professor so far. He gives good feedback, clearly communicates what he wants, and ultimately, wants you to do well. There will be some writing assignments but nothing to crazy. If you show up to the lectures, do the work, and read the textbook (there will be a lot of reading) you will do fine.
Very good teacher. Would take again.
Taylor is a good psychology professor with a clear grading criteria for every test including the final exam. Lectures are incorporated into the test so it's beneficial to attend. He also heavily relies on the textbook so make sure to read! Overall, a good professor that cares for student success.
This class was okay when it came to grading, but the worst part was the hard-to-understand lectures and the difficult testing. Once you figure out how he creates his tests it becomes easier to prepare for, but hard for a first-year course.
Professor Jamie is very kind and truly wants his students to succeed! His class is difficult and requires lots of textbook reading but it is worth it for his charismatic lectures and helpful advise regarding future paths in psychology!
Jamie cares about his students, is very accessible and approachable. His level of kindness, respect, lecture style, examination and grading are what we should all expect from a university. Highly recommend and I would be happy to have him as a prof for any psyc class.
By far the hardest intro to psych class out there but you really learn a lot. If you attend the lectures he explains every concept very well and answers questions great. Was willing to hop on a Google Meet at 1am to explain a question and very understanding (able to move deadlines & midterms). If you put in the work you will get a good grade.
Jamie obviously cares about his students, and he's a great person. As someone who is not a "math person", I was just happy I passed the course. Exam questions were hard to understand and thats mainly where my grade dropped. He has weekly quizzes that you get unlimited tries at which is a great grade booster. All in all he is a great guy!
This class was hard for me, but Jamie did do everything he could to help me succeed, and I do think he is a good professor. His tests are hard (more the written then the computer portion), and there is a LOT of material covered in the class, so showing up is crucial. He is very available through email outside of class, and is often willing to help.
Jamie is so great! You won't be able to coast through this class without working hard. Attend lectures and read the assigned textbook chapters and you can do well. I did have to study a lot for the tests, but if you're a psyc major it should be interesting content anyways. He tries to prepare us for the field which I appreciate.
