Great guy... his test are not that bad as long as you do the review... I love his teaching style... does not use book... tells history like a story... he is very funny!
Exxelent teacher, Long notes, only three tests per year,i Got a 56 on first test a 52 on second test and a 92 on final.Final replace the 52 (lowest) so it was like getting a 92,92,56. Easy assignments, i missed 12 days in his class and he just told me to get the notes from other people. Interesting
He is a great teacher, but very hard. His lectures were very interesting (I actually enjoyed history).
Terrible online experience - took his summer course (10 weeks). He'd go weeks without any sort of communication at all. Writing is my strong point, so I did well in the class, but many complained in postings that they were failing. No communication - he doesn't seem that interested in teaching.
EXTERMELY HARD!!!! Easys are really hard, teaches like its Harvard!!! Is not clear on his tests, and his lectures are not articulate enough to follow.
Online course- pretty simple with little instruction. Gives weekly assignments to read one chapter and do short reaserch for homework due at the end of the week. You must read chapters to pass the quizzes. Not so bad of an online teacher (regular 16 semester).
I really enjoyed this class.I had no problems getting help if I needed. He was a fast responder and if I really needed him I called and he was there. If I was confused with any assignment he clarified it for me and I was able to understand.Hate that we have to ask how are we doing grade wide.
If this is the teacher i am thinking of, holy cow, he is awesome. Hands down- best teacher i've ever had or seen for that matter. He is a motivational speaker, everyone is excited in his class. Incredible personality. You want to take him as a teacher. you'll love him
Very fun teacher. No homework but reader quizzes. Tests are hard. Multiple choice and matching is a breeze. Short answer and essay is the worst. Very hard grader on that. If you don't do well on those it really hurts your test grade. With the final grade being based off of tests and quizzes you really need to do well on them to get a decent grade.
This guy is hilarious! I always hated history but he makes the class so interesting. I suggest all girls take him. He makes history seem like a big soap opera. I really learned a lot!
If this is the teacher i am thinking of, holy cow, he is awesome. Hands down- best teacher i've ever had or seen for that matter. He is a motivational speaker, everyone is excited in his class. Incredible personality. You want to take him as a teacher. you'll love him
Online course was extremely hard, but Dr Thomas was very nice and responsive to all questions. Unfortunately I had to drop the course because I was failing. Very difficult to take this course online!
Lucky enough to have had him for both classes. Alot of enthusiasm for the material. Best lecturer I've ever had. highly recommended at least for the entertianment value. Tests are not easy, but not especially difficult. More emphasis on notes than the textbook but you won't be missing anything.
One of the best professors i have had at hcc and through out high school
Take his online class. All test are online and no essays. I LOVED HIS CLASS
he is a great teacher. i loved his class he made learning history fun, which is hard to do.
Dr. Thomas is a very bright guy who knows his material. His sense of humor and teaching style make history come alive. A note on his 1301 class-it is a "hybrid" course, meaning it has an online component. He gives you Fridays off for this. Campus: Westgate, Town&Country.
Great sense of humor. Tests are hard but other assignments helps you bring in a good grade.
Dr. Thomas has a great teaching style. It's all lecture, but he's animated and makes it more interesting than ever before! STUDY HARD for tests. And really know your essay info. One of the most friendly guys you'll ever meet.
One of the best profs at HCC. Attendance is necessary to pass the class, but overall very interesting. Tests are not very difficult if studied for, this includes essay portions. Definitely recommend this guy!
His online class was so disorganized. The quizes covered information from all over the book not just the chapters from that week but ones we hadn't read yet! He never responded to my emails and he openly admited that almost every quiz was defective. They were missing correct answers or the correct answer got combined with other answers.
he was not helpful at all. quiz had nothing to do with anything that we where currently learning about, they instead covered things that we didnt cover yet. test where hard, he came out and told us that we did horrible, but they did nothing to help us do any better. the study quide wasnt any help. he is awful, i dont know how he got any good review
Dr Thomas was awful. He was boring and arrogant. He contradicted the book yet we had to read it. I never knew who to follow.
Teacher sucks completely. never fixes errors, never replies to email, never tests on what he quizzes on, his mid term and final are on things we never even COVERED and his review is so poor, i can't believe he put ANY time into it.
His online class is not a walk in the park, but if you study for your midterm and final and do a good Powerpoint project you will surely pass. The quizzes were always messed up and difficult but he adds points back at the end of the semester. If you wanna make an easy A not a good class for you.
Never used the text book but did read articles from American Passages. Lectures were really fun and he is very friendly and is always good about clarifying if you are confused on something. Tests were mainly memorizing notes straight from lectures and lots of writing. 1301 was more chronology whereas 1302 jumped around it seemed on timeline.
great professor and awesome lecturer! but, his grading SUCKS!! he doesnt specify exactly what he wants on short answer but has fun taking off points when all the info is there!
Hey is very interesting and funny in class. Those who are complaining just dont want to work hard. He expects you do work for the class. (duh) He is not a bad teacher at all, but you should be willing to work.
Just a hard teacher
Regrettably I was forced to drop his class, but he was a great teacher! His class is like a big long story that keeps you interested. He gets really excited when he teaches making a boring subject like history, fun.
He is a great instructor. He tells a story and keeps everyone laughing. His only downside are the exams. They are extremely tough and require lots of writing. Other than that I do recommend this instructor for 1301 and 1302!!!!!
fabulous teacher!!! he keeps the class interesting the entire time. he jokes around alot, if you have any trouble do not hesitate to meet with him bc he will tell you exactly what he wants in his essays to the T. i loved this class!!
Absolutely horrible! his excuse for not being responsive to our concerns about class was because he had triplets and had no time for his online class. There were no lectures or notes, and his assignments had unorganized guidelines.
Very difficult teacher, third time to take the course. I do not reccomend anyone to even think of taking this class online over the summer if they can help it. If you work and/or have a family this is not for you at all.
his tests are very hard. most of the people in class get 50% on tests. he is funny but really hard. for people who english is their second lenguage this teacher is not the best.
AWESOME TEACHER!! I had him for 1301 and 1302 and he is very clear and understanding with the subject. keeps the class interesting with his jokes and real life stories and even makes jokes about the class material. essay and reading is a breeze. first class i didnt fall asleep in and i DEFINATELY reccomend him!
Leave it to me to tell you the honest truth about this teacher, NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND HAS A PROFESSOR MADE HISTORY SUCH AN INTERESTING AND FUNNY AS THIS MAN. Three simple steps to passin with an A 1) Take notes 2) do his internet assignments 3) study 4 his tests
this class is hard, I'm sorry but it is not going to be a breeze to get a passing grade in this class you will have to work but you will appreciate having a teacher like him because there is never a dull moment- this man is hilarious.. his tests are crazy the multiple choice are impossible and short answers needs to be essays but you will have fun.
This is by far one of the best profs i have had in my college career. Very enthusiastic and an awesome sense of humor. IF you dislike history..you will like it alot more if you take this guy.hes awesome. I got an A in this class. Its not impossible...its hard but if you focus and study youll be fine
This man is HILARIOUS, it is a ridiculously funny class!! But all dat aside, its very hard
awesome guy. awesome class. This quickly became my favorite class even though the topic was not originally something I enjoyed. Didnt find the tests hard or surprising. If you think this class is hard then every class you have must be hard. Enrolled with James for a 2nd semester!
Mr. thomas made history so much more enlightening, but I already liked history until he made he dred it because of how hard his class was. Seriously, his tests are RIDICULOUS. there are 10 mutiple choice, 10 matching and short answers and his essay. I would not recommend him, unless you are reallly good at writing essays on history. iT'S THE TRUTH!
I've never been interested in history prior to taking this class. He makes it very interesting and quite funny at times. I'd definately recommend this professor. His class is a bit hard if you're not a good notetaker. I'd recommend a laptop with good typing skills if you want to get thorough notes. He's very clear in my opinion if you ask.
this teacher is funny and he explains things well. but his tests are hard as hell and he grades very hard.
I was on here a year back because i commented on how funny/interesting/slash hard his class was. Now I'm here agsin because i took him 1302 n I got an A. Just focus, study, and you will do well
Very hard because of his tests and grading specifics. I hate history but he made it very interesting and enthusiastic. Great lecturer but you won't get away without studying you won't get away without verbatim definitions. I also got a C and disputed this with him because of an error on his part but got no response from him to have it fixed.
ok save yourself the money, don't buy the text books or novels, I got a B and usually I'm an A student, I'm not mad though because I really enjoyed his lectures and I feel so knowledgeable after taking both his classes, just know that multiple choice will not be your friend in this class and his essays are pretty easy if you're creative with words
I took this class online and (even though I didn't really study) I still managed to get a B. The exam reviews were super helpful when it came to both the midterm and the final. I finished both tests in less than 30 minutes as the questions were basically the same as the ones in the review.
Very good lecturer, but that is all he does. SO boring and he talks to fast. You have to know what he teaches like the back of your hand for the tests!
I would not recommend him unless you are a student, who can handle a layed backed professor. His tests are made to make you fail, even if you read and take good notes. He doesn't give you any credit on essays. He seems the type of professor who just excepts you to understand his relaxed, uneffective lectures.
He is awesome! It's hard and you have to pay close attention, but he's good with giving hints to test questions. His lectures are awesome, but the class seems soooooo long. He's funny though, and he never brings his opinion into things, he just teaches
Great Professor, very helpful. I tool his 1301 online class and he was very helpfull and understanding of technical problems. Would highly recommend.
very interseting class. i am an a student and ended up with a c... his test are worded terribly and if your essay isnt long and detailed enough you will not pass any test.
He is a very nice man, but a terrible professor. I struggled keeping up with his class. He grades very unfairly, he tries to squeeze way too much information into one class period, and does not help out students in any way. After taking his advice and pointers, I failed his class. He is nice, but he has no teaching ability. I do not recommend him.
This man reminded me why history is AMAZING. Without a doubt the most interesting teacher to listen too I have ever heard. His theory about history is that he is telling you a story he is passionate about, and it works. TONS of notes. The text is useless, write every word he says and study that. Reviews for tests are exact if YOU do the work.
He is a great teacher!! My advice: 1)take detailed notes..write down everything he says if u can..that's what the tests are about. 2)Don't buy all the books...the only one you really need is one that has articles (can't remember the name) bc u'll take quizzes on them. I passed his class with an A and that's pretty much what i did. Take him!!!
Very interesting. Kept the class upbeat and was never dull.
He is tough but passionate! I am grateful for feeling compelled to attend class!
AWESOME!!! teacher, is very passionate on what he does, i love the way he expresses, with faces, sounds everything in nice. Took him for Both Hist and it was really good. Must study for his tests, but as long as you take good notes you will pass.
he is a good man...he loves teaching...u have to take a lot of notes...if u dont take notes u will fail...the textbook is only for quizzes....he is not fair in the grades
great teacher, must take notes to pass class!
Notes notes notes and more notes! Covers about 50 pgs of notes for a 10 question test, plus 10 matching, 5 words to identify and an essay. Grades the essay extremely hard. There are only 3 test (including the final), and 5 quizes which one is later dropped an equals 10 points. If you can stay up with an hr and a half of lecture then take him.
One of the few AMAZING profs. at HCC. Took him for 1301 and 1302... never a dull class period. YOU MUST TAKE NOTES. But if you do that (and review them) the exams are fairly easy. Don't waste money on the actual textbook, just get the smaller one with the articles.
yes, he is super passionate about what he teaches, he gets very carried away with usless history stories you do not need for the quizzes, midterm or final. DO NOT RECCAMOND AT ALL! forget about getting a good score on essays or short answers or the whole test for that matter. loved history until his class :(
Took this teacher online. He is nice, but takes very long to reply back to emails he is hard. do not take him!!! Wont recommend him for an online class.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Fantastic class! Lectures are like story time. He's hilarious. He grades hard, but you'll get used to it! Totally possible to make high A's on his tests. Recommend taking notes on a comp, cause you'll sure need them! He's SUPER helpful and courteous. Take his class!! Lots of work only during test prep, otherwise just attend! :D
The tests are completely based on the notes he provides. Tests are difficult. Class is interesting, but VERY monotonous. I don't recommend him unless you have lots of patience and plenty of time to study notes, read, review, etc. Required more attention than any of my other classes.
SUPER HARD TESTS!!! Unless you love history and want to major in it, I dont reccomend him. He's a cool guy, pretty funny, but it's impossible to make an A in that class! You have 5 reader quizzes, 1 is dropped, and 3 tests including the final. All the tests have 5 short anwers and one essay which he grades VERY hard!!
Do not take him, I am an a student and I struggled with this class, he never gives you credit for short answer and essay questions and expects you to know way to much, he seem nice but he is a horrible grader, take someone else!!!!
If you take good lengthy notes, you should do fine. Dont need the text, just the article book. Quizzes over the articles are kind of wordy so pick the main idea. Tests are over notes only! Got an A, made hist interesting. Write essays over what he says exactly in class=easy A. Mult choice, matching are easy. Short ans find significance.
HARDEST PROFESOR EVER! His tests are like 30 multiple choice, ten short answer, and an essay and he grades insanely hard on the essays. You use the article book alot and have quizzes on it and you have to read it for sure because the 5 question quizzes are tough questions. I read, attended every class, and took strict notes and still failed.
Awesome professor! Makes history fun and exciting. Gives out more than just the basic facts of history. Grades tough on the essay, but with good notes you should be fine. Awesome Professor!
I hated history in highschool and expected the same boring routine, but this guy teaches very well I even get interested in the story he's telling and forget that I've been there for 2 hours! Overall the quiz is just to see if your read it, and the test is hard eventhough I took pages of notes... Over all he is a great teacher.
Awesome Prof! He makes history fun and enjoyable. Lectures are not boring at all. Just go in and take good notes. He gives out a study guide and lets you know what your essay will be, so you can prepare ahead of time. Exams consits of MC, Matching (His gift to you), Short Answer and Essay. He provides the scantron. Took him for 1301/1302!
I feel this class prepared me for REAL college. His tests are difficult but not impossible. For me I had to study my notes very thoroughly to improve my grade. That being said, I enjoyed his teaching style so much I plan on struggling through his Western Civilization class next semester!
He was a fantastic teacher! You HAVE TO take notes in his class, because his tests are based purely off lecture. He is very funny and makes the class interesting. I would definitely recommend him if you do not enjoy history because me makes it fun and interesting!
If you want to understand your notes a little bit better for any test preparation, I suggest getting his permission to record the lectures in order to do well on the exams.
Do NOt TaKE This GuY! He does not give clear instructions, his syllabus is bland, he does not return emails, promptly. He is unclear on what he expects. He gives assignments but the wrong chapters to look up. He has grades essays based on his opinion of what the answer should be.He is rude.
Very much interesting, fun, helpful ... Must attend and listen ... :D
Love this class! His lectures are interesting--he's funny and engaging. Any bad reviews are probably from those who skipped a lot or didn't take notes. His tests are from the notes. Write down everything he talks about and you'll do ok. He grades hard because he expects a lot from his students. I've never been this interested in history before.
He's nice and class is interesting, but makes everything unnecessarily difficult. Not for those who aren't majoring in HIST. His test are impossible to make an A on. Too much freeresponse/essay. He's not consistent with other sources of hist so I think he just grades history as he remembers it. If it doesn't come from his mouth apparently its wrong
I took this class online and it was not bad at all. His grading is tough but if you do all the work and turn it in on time you will be ok. He replied to his email very fast. He provided feedback on quizzes and projects. High recommended.....
He brings the topics to reality!! but he is such a HARD grader .. you must write everything he mentioned during the class and he does NOT let you record! a great guy and funny at times but everything that he says must be mention during the test !!! its really hard to recieve an (A) on his test !!
He's a nice and helpful guy, he comes off as a arrogant guy at first but he is cool. Makes history come alive, you will learn a lot. Just listen and take notes, you will pass. Test are fair with studying of good notes. Very possible to get A.
I took Professor Thomas Class Online and he is such a great teacher. There are 10 Quizzes 10 Tests 1 Project a Mid Term and Final all online. He responds to Emails extremely fast and is very helpful with the material. Definitely recommend him!
Tests are hard, especially the essay and short answers. His quizzes are easy. He gives great lectures. Learned a lot about history
Tough Teacher. I took him for 2 classes and I had to drop both. He says he goes from the notes but the notes are never clear and he goes on irrelevant tangents.
He's okay, good story teller, makes class interesting, but he's a hard grader and you have to learn alot of vocabulary for the exams, and reading is mandatory for the full answer questions on the quizes and exams. He's always there bright and early too. All together I would pick someone else.
Im a history major and I couldnt wrap my head around the way he taught. Tests are hard material is unclear and even with the textbook (which he doesnt really use) I was still lost
Textbook not mandatory except for the reader quiz. Study from your notes. His tests are HARD, especially the multiple choice, but you'll be fine if you do well on the essay. He's not for those that hate history.
Mr. Thomas has great lectures. However his test are beyond hard! His test are pretty much an analysis of all the notes you take. Attendance is a must! Missing one day is like an automatic C on a test. If you want to pass this class. Be prepared to come on time, take notes, read outside sources, and meet with him right after your first test..
The way he teaches is really interesting. But the test is hard to get a good grade. The quiz he said we read the Articles but actually the answers usually are not there. the test contain 4 parts : Multiple choices, Matching, Identification and Essay. What I hate the most is identification because don't know what information he wants.
This guy is honestly a great teacher. I knew nothing about american history prior to this class and I found it very interesting. He makes history realistic and funny. Your notes must be thorough, what he says is what he expects on the test-in detail. I'd advice not to go to outside sources. I found the tests easy-except for multiple choice.
Very knowledgeable about the topic he teaches. Very interesting class. The best HCC teacher I've ever had. Really enjoy the way he teaches - vivid Like watching a movie. Highly recommend this professor if you really want to learn history. Tests all come from notes. So take good notes and study hard. Easy A!
Going to his class was like story time:)Not bad to have as a morning class because you'll actually enjoy it.Getting an A is HARD but not impossible. His office hours suck(7-8am everyday)but go anyway and it will help TREMENDOUSLY.He also responds very quickly to email and i barely pulled off an A. DEFINITELY would recommend him though.Great teacher
He knows & loves history very much and is very knowledgeable.Taking thorough notes and attendance are key to passing. His test is 20 MC, short answer, and an essay. His essays are tough to score points on though- at least for me. He is a tough grader. 3 Test all semester(last ones final), and maybe 6 online quizzes. no extra credit. nice guy though
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!!! Extremely knowledgeable and I learned so much from his class! No textbook- just lectures. Tests are easy if you study and take notes! He is always willing to help outside of class. Highly recommend!!
Very good teacher, knows what he is talking about, but is a very strict grader. The exams MC is hard, but not impossible. But his short answer and essay are impossible. He barely gives any points if not zero. I would recommend if you love hist otherwise dont, hes too much of a hard grader
I loved his class. I learned more in his class than any class. He grades hard when it comes to tests but if you show up and take notes you will do well. Quizes are easy online over short readings he drops the lowest one. And the last test he will substitute with the lowest test grade. Great teacher and I feel like I learned something.
BAD CLASS EVER, NO POWERPOINT. ONLY TALK AND HE GRADES FOR THE TEST EXTREMELY HARD. THAT CLASS LOWER MY GPA.
Very tough, quizzes seem to be easy but the grade proves otherwise. The mid-term is hard. Assignments aren't too bad just have to do a lot of research. I'll be lucky to finish with a D, and I have never done this bad in a class.
A masterful story teller. I wanted to build a campfire in the middle of the room and hand out 'smores to my classmates...he's that engaging and interesting. Consider yourself lucky to have a professor of this caliber at a community college. I highly recommend this professor, take him, go to class, take notes..Easy A if you do..your toast if you dont
I don't like history & I enjoyed this class online. Take in person if you can, probably better. Read your chapters. Quizzes are only 5 questions! Midterm & final straight from quizzes except 2 essay questions which are in depth & hard. Put in a little time reading & understanding & you'll do fine. I could have gotten an A if I worked a bit harder.
This class was hard! Grades tests real hard and I write a lot for essay questions, still finds something you missed. Attend every class because u write notes EVERY class. he is real good about getting back to you thru email though. I got a B but had to study hard for it!!! Good luck you'll need it. I'm not taking his Hist 2 class, stressed me out!
It's true Mr. Thomas is a little hard when it comes to his tests, but he's a good professor. All you have is 3 tests and 1 final exam. Take good notes, and study your butt off for those tests. That's the only thing you have to do.
very nice & helpful somewhat strict about tardiness and doesnt like cellphones but explains everything clear. Very Hard testing though & constant reader quiz but class was good.
Very hard grader. There are 5 quizzes which have tricky answers and 5 assignments which he grades really hard on. The midterm has the same questions as the previous quizzes along with an essay question. I will probably be making a B but I currently have a C right now. I have made all A's this year. DON'T TAKE HIM!
He made the class super interesting, I could listen to this man speak History for hours and not look up at the clock once. The only issue I had were that the tests were a challenge. If you pay attention and take really good notes you should be okay. If you don't want to be bored and want an engaging teacher I would recommend this one.
Great class. I am not a history buff but i learned a lot. Exams are exactly from the quizzes. writing assignment every week
Online Course - HIST1302. Essay assignments and/or quizzes every week. Mid-term, final and research project. Do good on quizzes and half of your tests are already covered. For the writing tell the whole story do not answer just the question. His notes are more important than the book. Read them carefully! Tough grader; it is college after all.
Mr. Thomas, oh this man is absolutely smart, funny and truly knows his story! HCC has truly lucked out with a professor of this magnitude! hard grader, but he's fair, he replies quick to your messages and is always willing and available to help, do your reader quizzes they will help improve your grade, show up on time and to every class, take notes
One of the most passionate teachers, he loves history and now I love it too. (I USED TO HATE LEARNING ABOUT HIST) You can tell by how he teaches he cares a lot about history and his students. He is engaging in class and funny too! Exams/quiz can be challenging but he is 100% fair. I would recommend taking him!!!!!!!
I have failed this class but honestly its very interesting class, he is very knowledgeable. His tests are not easy at all, for mid term and final the tests are: 15 multiple questions, 5 identification questions, matching, and a proper essay.
Professor Thomas was one of the best teachers I've ever had he made history very very interesting ans he actually cares about history, but he grades VERY VERY HARD. I recorded his lecture and memorized what he said and wrote it down as an answer on the final and still ended up with a D. C overall. He IS a good professor though
One of the best professors I have ever taken, maybe THE best. I liked history before, but Dr. Thomas made it so interesting. He has been teaching 28 years, and it shows in the quality of his lectures. Not easy, but totally worth it!
Mr. James Thomas is the best History teacher I have ever worked with. I love history and he made it more interesting. I took this class online. There was one quiz, and one research question for every chapter, and if you read his notes and book you can easily get 100 on quiz. Mid term and Final came directly from quizzes. BEST TEACHER EVER!
Don't listen to all the reviews about how hard he is. I think his class is very much average difficulty. It does require effort, but it wasn't anything crazy. Just pay attention to lecture. He's a GREAT speaker, really passionate about history, and can be quite funny. He lights up when he lectures. Would recommend him 100%
This is mostly a lecture class.
Great lectures! His test aren't hard, he just grades SUPER hard. If you're not a good writer, you're basically going to fail every test??
I love this teacher! Did I say I love this teacher? He does not require that you have the text book but you must take notes and lectures are so easy to understand. If you take good notes and study them according to his reviews you will do really well in his class. Only test grades no papers or projects. EXCELLENT TEACHER!!!!
if you want to get a good grade, then do not take him.
One of the MOST stressful class I've ever taken. I LOVE his passion for history, he's an amazing storyteller but when it came down to testing, it killed me. WARNING: He's a HARD grader. He takes off points for not being specific enough so if you plan on taking his class, TAKE NOTES ON LITERALLY EVERYTHING HE SAYS, and recall it for the test. :(
Even God knows i tried my best in this class but i ended up with a poor grade. You have to take notes at the same time listening to his lectures. Very hard. I wouldn't recommend anyone taking this class because you write the best you can in the essay but he still grades you poorly It's really frustrating. Take him if you want a C in your transcript
He is really a good professor, he is always kind and patient if you really want to work and ask for questions. He got good history background and he is a person that definitely know history. If you want a easy A, do not choose him, bu if you want to really learn history, he would give you good helps.
Horrible professor! He only allows you to see assignments 3 days before they are due, and his instructions within the assignments were extremely unclear. For further note, the assignments did NOT corresponded to the assigned reading. He does not reply to emails and prefers his students play a never ending guessing game.
Mr. Thomas is a really good professor. However, I'm not saying he is easy... because he is NOT. You got to work your ss off in order to get an A. Anyways, he is reaaally funny, and he is ALWAYS willing to help you.
Thomas gives the best lectures money can buy. He makes a history lesson feel like your uncle is telling you stories! I never wanted the lessons to end. The class is broken into three tests and 5 short Homeworks. If you want to actually learn about history, or be shown why it is exciting, take Thomas for Hist 1301+1302
Very nice! Super helpful! No homework except to study and a few online quizzes. His multiple choice questions kill are veryyyyyyyyyyy tough but I learn so much! I'm going to take his history 1302 class!
Mr Thomas teaches with an incomparable amount passion. His lectures are good and they are basically him telling you a story. He definitely seems like he loves his job and is always more than happy to answer any questions you may have. On the other hand he MAKES you take notes and his tests are one of the longest and toughest I've taken by far.
Get ready to write! You must take notes on EVERYTHING he says. His tests are super long and hard. Tests consist of multiple choice, matching, open ended responses and of course the dreadful essay. Great Prof. He's very passionate, but a really tough class overall. Class consists of 3 tests and about 4-5 short multiple choice quizzes.
His lectures are really interesting and easy to understand, and he doesn't hesitate to listen to any questions you might have. He especially appreciates puns.
His lecture was inspirational and amazing, telling the story about the history. Bad thing is that there is no extra credit, you have to memorize a lot of information.
Took this class online. Weekly short essays(10 of them) but very interesting topics, No minimum or maximum words as long as you answer what the question is asking. 10 quizzes along with a mid-term exam and a final. Sounds a lot of work but spend 3-4 hours on this class weekly and you should be more than okay. Will take his hist 1302 for sure.
I took him for both my history classes and absolutely loved him. Write everything he says and you will be fine. His tests are long and somewhat challenging but he gives you a review. You only need the online book for the online quizzes he gives. I received a C for History 1301 and a B for History 1302. Would definitely recommend him.
DON'T EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU LOVE YOUR GPA. This guy will drag you gpa down. He don't know what he is teaching in class, he is not clear about any material on test! He is a very tough grader and NO EXTRA CREDIT!!! His lectures are long and boring and not related to stuff on test at all. SAVE YOUR TIME MONEY AND GPA. RUN AWAY!!!!
Good class with enjoyable assignments. Tip: Make sure you read the roll call statements from his each week. I would have received an A in this class if I would have done better on reading all weekly information. I enjoy History so wish I would have take face to face class to hear more about what he was teaching. Online is more self teaching
I don't know why he doesn't have better reviews. I took him online and I thought he was great. He was very clear about what he expected. He was really great about emailing me back right away if I had any questions or concerns. I'm taking him again for my other History class.
I'm not sure why he doesn't have better reviews because he knows what he's talking about, he makes the lectures very easy to understand. He's hilarious and clearly passionate about History. Now if you don't take good notes and you don't want to show up to every class or try hard at all then don't take him, he is a very tough grader.
He gives the best lectures ever. No book required except some texts for online quizzes. 5 online quizzes (5 questions) each 25 points, one dropped. Three tests each have 4 parts. 10-12 multiple choice, 8-10 matching, 5 one paragraph explanations and an essay. Tests are from his lectures so write whatever comes out of his mouth!
Professor Thomas feels like a family member by the time you lave his class. He covers a vast amount of history but makes it memorable by using personal stories and jokes throughout each class. He inspired me that I CAN graduate and I can climb to new levels with my education. This was the best class I have ever taken. He pushes you, it isn't cake.
Prof. Thomas gives good lectures. However his tests are hard and he does not explain them very well. He is very picky about what are on his tests and how he grades them. He does not give bonus or extra credit. Overall okay professor
Prof. Thomas is an absolutely GREAT Professor. His lectures are amazing! BUT, if History is not your strong suite, STAY AWAY. Get ready to write A LOT. Tests are extremely difficult and the review is not really a review. You really have to have a passion for History and a great memory to pass this class. Great lectures, just a really tough grader.
Dr. Thomas is one heck of a professor! I took History 1 over the winter and secret to success is really just to work. I attended class and took notes on my laptop and then after class I would rewrite my notes on paper. Did that for 4 weeks straight and got an A. Not difficult Final Grade: 2 Tests (25% each), 1 Paper (25%), 4 Quizzes (6.25% each)
Professor James Thomas in few words is such a great professor , he is great and made of the class an interesting one!
The professor is an extremely tough grader. If you think you can just look everything up online, wrong. You need to actually do the work but at the end of the class you learn something. The Mid-Term and Final are not hard if you done the assignments and quizzes prior.
Don't take this class if you want to make an A. His lectures are great, but his tests are hard. There's no homework. Grades are based on tests (3 during the semester) and quizzes (5 during the semester). He drops the lowest grades, but there are no opportunities to make up for a very low grade in any of the tests or the quizzes.
Dr. Thomas is a great teacher, smart, & I have heard he is great in person but DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS ONLINE. He is EXTREMELY unclear on assignments & it is a continuous guessing game figuring out what he wants on assignments the entire semester which sucked with my being a first time online student. I cannot describe how frustrating it was!!!!!!!!!
I took online History in fall 2016, and I was really shocked because I hardly got C. To be honest, professor Thomas used to answer every question I emailed him as fast as ninja. However, he is tough grader, a lot of assignments and quizzes which are confusing and unclear. This class was a nightmare to me. Don't take him online
I am taking History 1301 as online class and it is my first online class and this class is so FRUSTRATING I am on week 4 and have cried and wanted drop since week 1! His assignments are short but are so VAGUE tells you to read all these things and then quizzes you on unrelated topics. His essay Questions are all online research you cant find easy
Mr. Thomas is a very enthusiastic, informative, knowledgeable teacher BUT although his lectures are great, his tests are TERRIBLE! They cover alot that you aren't told to study or are taught, coupled with poor answer choices that contradict his lectures, and you have to prepare for 5 college level essays PER test. 4.0 student and hardly had a C.
Great Professor with AMAZING lectures. 5 quizzes and 3 tests. The tests are difficult if you do not take notes, write down EVERYTHING he says and study over it and you will do fine. I did not buy the text book. I would take again! Essay on each test so I would write an outline to study so you finish on time!
Professor Thomas is a very tough grader and he talks A LOT. He expects you to write down everything he says. His tests include things that he does not go over in class.
Professor Thomas was a really hard grader with difficult tests. He had three tests with multiple choice, 5 short answers, and 1 essay. He graded the writing portion with an unknown rubric and it was extremely hard to get full points on the essay.
Took this class in person over winter break. As long as your type up notes during class, you are going to do fine. He even emphasizes that on the first day to take as much notes as possible, and you will do very well. There was a research paper, midterm, final. It takes 100% commitment during class, but bare commitment outside. Ended up with a 95+.
I originally rated 4 weeks into my online class, My opinion has changed in the Beginning none of his assignments never made much sense but got easier as the semester went on BUT assignments and quizzes have nothing to do with the book all from extra literature he posts. SAVE your quiz answers they are the same for midterm/final pp project was easy
Great lectures, vey passionate, test content is easy but the test itself takes a while if you aren't the fastest writer.
Dr.T is HILARIOUS and his class is so interesting. He loves his job. He grades hard and the tests are mostly essay based. Use the study guide to focus on key points of his lectures. Write detailed and as much as you possibly can on his tests. Try and repeat his lectures. Don't skip any days or you will be lost. Everything comes from his lectures.
I don't why people are complaining about him. He is the best professor I have ever taken. Period. His lectures are specific and interesting. HOWEVER, you must take AMAZING notes! Study a few days before his tests because they are hard! Thanks to him, I realized my passion for history. I got a B in this class and I am a straight A student.
1 power-point project, 5 quizzes, 5 assignments, midterm and final exam. Assignments are so easy essays. Quizzes are little straight forward, you have to study, cannot google it. If you try a little you can pass this class with an A.
Taking this professor my online class was a big mistake. Save your grade and GPA and don't take him.
I can understand why people thought he was hard BUT definitely not unfair. I made a B & I'm taking him again in the regular semester. You have to write a lot of essays & do a lot of critical thinking. Pretty enjoyable for me though & I'm not big on studying.
Dr. Thomas is an insightful and thorough professor. Listen well and take good notes; his lectures can go by fast. However, he's usually willing to stop for questions, so pace shouldn't be a problem. If you're looking for an easy A, then Dr. Thomas isn't your guy. If you're looking for a guy who knows what he's talking about, then look no further.
Dr. Thomas lectures in a way that you can actually understand History and not be bored. My biggest problem was his lectures did not match the exams, he grades very hard on the essays, and the reader quizzes are 5 questions over 20-30 pages of reading on Pearson. I struggled a lot in this class which makes me upset because I loved his lectures.
Great professor. He emphasizes that the tests is based solely on lectures, so as long as you type his lectures verbatim, you will score very well on the tests. The essay was easy, along with quizzes. It is however to note that I go to an Ivy.
Protect your grades if you want a good GPA don't ever take his class. The wroooong professor ever met in my entire life
Avoid this professor!!! he says he is not a young teacher, so he has nothing to prove. He will ruin your grades. You will be confused in his class. You will regret ever picking his class. Do not be deceived!!! Appears nice, but will ruin your grades effortlessly.
He expects you to take notes of his lectures, but his notes do not teach you anything. You will need to use the textbook. He grades you poorly and unfairly when you do not write his words verbatim on the exams. I pity those students who would fall into his trap in the new semester. Do not be deceived!!!! Run for your dear grades. Avoid the stress!!
His class is very tough, even if you pay attention. His grading is not fair because he'll take off a lot of marks for a small mistake and he didn't even give us any extra assignment to do to make for our lost marks, despite the fact that we had Harvey. If you're not a morning person. don't take his class.
Got a B the first time I got him, but i know it was my fault. Easy A when you take good notes and study thoroughly. He is an amazing lecturer and explains everything in a very entertaining way. The class feels like story time. Pro tip: always answer What When Where What and Why a term is important. (I've taken him 3 times)
He is an outstanding teacher his lectures are entertaining kinda like a long story that he tells. There is no power points or anything he likes lecturing from the syllabus and speaks as he writes terms on the board. You will HAVE to take notes or you wont pass. He grades very hard on essays. STUDY.
One of my favorite professor of all time! He actually made learning history so much fun and interesting. Hes very funny and his lectures are so entertaining i actually wanted to learn more! He is a tough grader though, but he strictly states to write everything coming out of his mouth, and believe me you will need to.
He gives good lectures in his mini-mesters. They're in story form which makes it easy to remember. The downside to this is sometimes he'll make a joke, something like "he was beaten to death and they threw him on a ship" and colonial america you can't really say we never did anything like this. He corrected boat to ship, but he's a great professor.
I take his history class online and haven't had any problems. The assignments and quizzes are due within a week which is pretty reasonable timing to get everything submitted. This class is easy if you do what you're supposed to do.
He is a tough grader! Grades assignments like we are all history majors. His quizzes are hard so you actually have to read. 10 written assignments that have to be in depth and 10 quizzes. You have a midterm and final and 1 project.
I love this teacher! People say he is tough. Its college, he will not hold your hand! He gave me better grades than I expected! TIPS: for online- the documents he uploads that he types is what exactly will be on the quizzes & go back mondays and see the wrong quiz answers before locked- they will be on the mid/exam. :)
The professor is very knowledgeable and wants to share that knowledge with students. He wants you to not only read but also understand what you read and the significance of the event. Homework assignments are doable although they do take time. Midterm and Final have essay questions as well as multiple-choice. Power project on any topic you choose.
In my opinion he was a good presenter with his lectures but he has an unfair grading system. I have always gotten 90 plus grades on my writings but his were next to nothing with the points he gives you. I got a D in the class and had to retake history and got an A with a better professor. If you want to be graded unfairly go ahead and take him.
He is the worst to take. He doesn't use the textook at all. He goes on a tangent about all the historical places he has been to , and How he goes to disney world every spring break with his family. It's not useful in the class. Out of All of his lecture about 80 percent he talks about will wnot even be on the test. Along with no text reference.
He tells you to write down everything he says, and he means it. If you take good notes and study a bit the tests are fine, the toughest part are the essays on the tests. He likes some additional info, show you have learned outside of the class a little. if you takes notes an show up, you'll get a B. if you like history and learn, you'll get an A
Took Professor Thomas for HIST 1301 and 1302. First, you wont need a textbook for this class. All you need to do is pay attention to his lectures, past the 5 quizzes he scatters throughout the semester and you'll be good. Final is not comprehensive. His lectures are entertaining so you wont be bored. Just show up on time and NO PHONE USAGE AT ALL.
He is a very nice and respectable teacher. He has no powerpoint, handouts, all verbal lectures. The quizzes are fairly easy in a sense, the reading could be quite a bit. The test are extremely long and overwhelming. Too much writing on the test. He grades very hard. HE WILL TAKE OFF POINTS FOR ANY SMALL MISTAKE which really brings your grade down.
His lectures are entertaining at best. Taking good notes will not be enough to pass, going further on the info on your own will be necessary and even that won't ensure a good grade. The grades were 5 quizzes and 3 test including the final and there is absolutely no extra credit. The test are matching, mc, free response, and an essay every time. GL.
Great lectures, he made me love history. Don't skip any the class, you won't pass. Try to write pretty much everything, u will need that for tests.
He is a nice person. That being said, his way of teaching is through lectures. That is it. Your grade only comes from 3 exams (including the final) and 5 reading quizzes. You can not pass an exam with a 100 no matter how hard you try. I have gotten 70s on both my exams and I would have dropped out had I not wasted so much money. Really unfair.
Awful professor. Canvas is very unorganized and his expectations for the assignments and deadlines are always unclear. Makes you buy a textbook you never use and only gives you 10 minutes for each weekly quiz. The quiz questions are super cryptic and often contain typos. Also, he takes roll for some reason?
Thomas was a great teacher and his lectures were always entertaining to listen to. As long as you take notes, pay attention and come to class you will pass. Missing even one day can be detrimental to your grade as he covers a lot in the time span of one class. Overall I would definitely take his class again but keep in mind he grades harshly.
Good lectures, very interesting .. just very difficult grading and quizzes.
Like everyone else has said, he is an amazing professor! He's very passionate about history and great to listen to. But you literally have to write everything that comes out of his mouth. No power point and no textbook. After the first test got an F, and decided it was worth giving it another shot, but I should've drop it when I had the chance to.
A real gem at HCC, there are not much other professors like Thomas that have such a passion for what they teach that it rubs off on students. There are no handouts or slideshows, it's ole fashioned lecture and note taking. He gives very good analogies and examples to help your mind wrap around topics and his lectures are very captivating.
I took Hist 1301 online and If you take him you won't regret it. He quizzes and tests you off of EXACTLY what he teaches you. Questions and your answers are available to see once you complete your quiz so you can look and go back to see what you got wrong. There was one project, fairly easy, due towards the end of the semester.
Awesome guy, honestly. If you learn by listening and taking notes he is the professor for you. He is straight to the point and treats everyone equally. He is very knowledgeable and far from boring. His tests are a little difficult and you will be writing ALOT! But he makes the material very easy to understand. He made me appreciate history.
I liked his personality and he does a good job keeping you engaged but his TESTS very difficult. You have to write an essay and give historical significance which are a combined total of 50 points. He will give you 20/50 or even worse, he is very harsh grader, my class average for all the tests was a 55. Good guy, not the best professor.
I took this class and it seemed easy. When it came to the midterm i did well on the multiple choice part but when it came to the essay he did not explain what i could fix or anything. He just put a grade there. When it came to my final the same thing happened. He doesn't give good explanations or feedback so that you can pass. .
Mr. Thomas is a great professor and his lectures are interesting. He gives a different point of view of U.S. History and I really liked it. However, I think that I could have done better if we were in a physical classroom this year, but due to COVID-19 that was impossible. You just need to make sure that you read and study HIS lecture notes.
i only took him cause the professor i wanted was already taken and he was my last option. it was a huge mistake . he is a tough grader, his quizzes would have only 5 questions, which means you either ace it or fail. his tests where really hard, and he is a tough grader. take him only if its your last option.
poorly structured class, quizzes with only 5 questions so you fail if you get two wrong, little to no feedback on assignments, unclear instructions and expectations
Dr. Thomas is very helpful and will work with you as long as you raise concerns with time and try to go further than just mindlessly read the textbook. I learned a lot this semester and enjoyed the liberty of choosing our powerpoint project topic.
He is a great guy! You need to be really going over the notes you take in class or you will fail. The quizzes aren't structured well to be honest. you only have around 10 grades the whole semester 3 exams and around 7 quizzes. Each quiz is 10 mins long and if you fail you're actually screwed. The quizzes you take are based off articles u must read.
He offers almost no feedback on any of the assignments or essays so you don't even know what to improve on. And even after reaching out to him on email for feedback and doing what he says, he still gave me a low grade with no feedback. His quizzes are five questions too so if you miss more than two then you fail.
hardest class i have ever took, he does not care about you and will not help improve your grade, lectures are very boring as he just stands and talks occasionally writing on the board, this class ruined my 4.0 gpa and chances to get into a top university, avoid this professor if possible!!!
Do not take his class!! His grading is awful, 5 questions quizzes, not room for error. Absolutely no feedback. No communication, he brushes your emails off, will not work with students. His test questions are not clear. Be ready to fail or struggle in this class if you take him.
You must have good notes taking skills because the exam will come from his notes ONLY. Attend class because he hints essay questions and has great sense of humor. MEMORIZE your notes: 25 mark essay requires you to reproduce his notes. 10 minute quiz to answer 5 questions for 25 marks from reading an approximately 25 pages of the text book.
Dr. Thomas does not read through the assignments. I got a 5/25 on an assignment because he said my plagiarism tracker was 50%. If he opened the assignment, he would see all the plagiarism was from the pasted URLs under my references. It's like he didn't open the assignment or he would have seen that my work was original. Bad professor, doesn't care
Grades are taken from quizzes on reading material that he assigns. Notes are necessary for both midterm and final. Had office hours available and was helpful in clearing concerns or questions regarding material.
He made his lectures entertaining by including his experiences and making subtle jokes. He made History fun and I looked forward to his classes. The only Con is the Test, which includes an essay prompt, but the preparation time is enough. He also gives study guides for EACH test, including the final. Take good notes and attend all classes, crucial.
Professor Thomas' lectures are engaging, but the class is challenging. Quizzes and exams are tough, requiring strong note-taking and preparation. Utilizing Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can be helpful for study prep and staying on top of the material.
Dr. Thomas was honestly a good professor. His lectures are decently engaging, I just suggest not to take an 8am class, because all he does is lecture and you may be put to sleep. Quizzes are hard, and he grades essays hard, but as long as you study and show up to class you should be fine! No alternative assignments other than tests and quizzes.
Pay attention, take detailed notes, and stay focused—don't fall asleep, use your phone, or talk during class. Active listening is key. Extra credit opportunities are available. If you're organized and disciplined, you'll do well in this course.
I took him for US 1301 and 1302; both were entertaining & informative. His lectures are captivating stories, they're easy to remember. He's accessible outside & inside of class, he definitely cares, so for any questions or comments, he's very likely to be attentive and help out. I never thought history could be as interesting and enlightening..
I had Dr. Thomas in both 1301 and 1302 history classes. I would recommend him to those who are serious about learning, taking notes, and studying. It was strange to me when I would see people sleeping while he was teaching.
His class is easy if you do your assignments on time and quizzes. Every assignment is due on Sunday he grades pretty well you have to put enough of time on your essays because he is a tough grader but other then that, his class is pretty easy to pass
Professor Thomas is the best story teller ever. I really do get so immersed in his lessons and i think more history classes should be taught like this instead of being read out of a textbook. His lecture forces you to pay attantion or whatever you miss you would have to find from another classmate who wrote it down.
I took Dr.Thomas course back in 2024 and his lectures were very entertaining. Although, the only problem was that for his notes is basically everything that comes out of his mouth. He does not give any notes whatsoever and the class is based off of 3 exams and 7 quizzes. Just make sure to take notes and study hard.
He was a hard grader, and there were no textbooks available for us to prepare for the test. There were also no extra credit opportunities to help improve grades. He was very strict with students who arrived late, and if you missed a class, you were basically cooked. He never posted lectures on Canvas, and recording lectures was not allowed.
