If you are non-native speaker and poor in English, don't take his class. It's like torturing in his class for non-native poor English student.

his class is so boring. he dont really care how u did. he use the text book that he write. i don't think thats the class you should be take
His vocabulary is huge and a bit hard to follow. He tries his best to help and make one think so if u like a bit of a challenge go for his class.
VERY VERY BORING!!!!! Teacher doesn't know how to help students and again extremely boring!!!. And hes an a hole
ehhh...he's too picky about papers
This teacher is wonderful. Have him everytime you need an english class. In his defense, if you can't even use good english to type a rating out, what are you doing in an English 1C class? Start at the bottom and work into it.
His lectures are extremely boring and uninteresting. He lectures his points on topics and resides within his own stubborness on papers basing your grade on whether he likes you or not.
BORING! Do not take this guy! He grades unfairly Is very stubborn and if you have a great idea, he'll say you're wrong and hes right! I have always been an A/B english student and I 'earned' a C in his class. Boring topix n nobody likes to speak n clas
If you want to fail! take this guy
do not take ......he is not a good teacher....but...if you are a native speaker.....maybe you can pass.....

I love this guy. He is so cool and very helping i always get help from him. Very hot too. I think you have to be a girl to do well in the class. lol
Thomas is an okay teacher. His class gets so quiet when lecturing. I think that his class is hard for a non-native English speaker. Grammar is very crucial. That's all I can say.
I never had a good teacher til Thomas best teacher for english he taught me how to write a decent entences.i finaly conncted with the rules of english.Great help but a long way to go.Class is not easy much like english. This classis to improve writting which he does.I hate typing explains errors

WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM......VERY UNCLEAR, HARD 2 RELATE TO AND NOT UNDERSTANDING. BEWARE STUDENTS!1
Thomas was cool, would spend as much time as needed to help you with english. He has a good sense of humor too. I'd totally take his classes
he is very helpful and he doesn't like lazy students. I am not a native speaker and I passed his class tho!! He is great.
Thomas is one of the Hardest teachers I have ever had. He is well worth it if you are actually trying to learn how to write a decent paper. Highly recommended
WORST TEACHER..EXPECTS YOU TO UNDERSTAND HIS POINT OF VIEW. NOT UNDERSTANDING ON OTHERS POINT OF VIEWS. ALSO TOLD A STUDENT, "IT'S NOT LIKE EVERYONE HERE IS GOING TO A FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITY". WHAT KINDA TEACHER SAYS THAT? WORST TEACHER @ MT. SAC. BEWARE!!!!!
I took the nine week course... my 5th time taking Engl 1A and got an A! I tends to think his point of view is the "most correct" one and he knows the material. He is willing to work with you if you are having any trouble. Tough to understand, but cares about you getting your papers in.
i had him for 68 and took him for 1c, but had to withdraw because of work. he's a great english teacher. not hard at all, very easy, try taking Chris Ramos, now thats hard, but you learn. thomas is an easy A. 1c we watched movies and wrote about them.
Im taking Thomas now for summer, so far he is great. He will even go up and ask you if you need help.He will type out his comments when he grades your paper so it looks like he does take the time to grade your paper and find the areas u need help in.My summer class w/him starts at 7:30 we are all dead in there, but he still gives it all the effort.
Best english teacher yet. We watch movies and write papers on them. Not hard at all, like other teachers (McCormick). You wont regret taking him. unlike the other comment...he does not have a gay lisp, he is a cool guy.
he is a nice teacher just grades a little hard on the papers that we do every WEEK...and its really boring..but i think over all hes a good teacher with a little challenge
best english teacher i've had so far. the class is sooo easy.

This class is boring! We spend 2 hours talking about the book, movie, article, etc we read or watched the day before. The essays are complicated only because I never wrote in the technique he wants. Only take him if you love to talk and analyze work for 2 hours.
stupid liars who said he is good. he is so far the worst english professor in mt sac. yes, you get to watch movies, but you have to write a 2k word essay and relate those 50 years old movies to some philosophers 200 years ago. good luck
Do not take him! This class is very boring! We have to write crazy papers and listen to him talk for two hours straight! Like most people said, we do watch movies but we have to listen to a two hour lecture the next day about it and write a crazy paper. Do not take him!!
Dr. J. Thomas is one of the best professors I have ever come across. He makes the class very intresting and listens to your thoughts on the material discussed in class. You have to write 3 papers, take quizzes on readings (Extremely easy), and write journals(easy) I'm not going to lie and say its an easy "A", but you will learn a lot.
WOST TEACHER EVER. Don't take him, heed the words of the experienced!!!! He is not clear on what he wants from his students, difficult to please via essay(s). I love English, he just turned me off due to his teaching techniques & style. Movie watching, essay writing, hours of lecture joke. Don't take him, period.
The class was based on photocopied texts of various historical figures and some movies. While the class was challenging, it was in my opinion, and of a few others, easy for this type of class. Mr. Thomas is very good at making one think, and step by step helped us analyze respectable texts and form meaningful writing.
Mostly boring lectures. Doesnt seem willing to accept viewpoints that oppose his own, even if theyre well, or at least decently founded. Seems very liberal in his beliefs. Sure you watch a lot of movies, but after the first couple, you dont get any prompting for the papers. The movies are usually 75% boring as well.
I took thomas for 67 last summer and I just completed eng 1c in spring and I wouldn't have done well if it was not for J. Thomas. He is a good teacher and he cares about your grade but you do have to put in some work. He's not as bad as people are making him seem to be. if your looking for a class just to get by in don't take him.
I got an A in his class. The lectures can get a little boring but they can be interesting too. There are just three papers and the final. He's VERY helpful if you just ask and tries to get the point across as best possible. Nice, approachable, simple, effective. Not difficult, but a little uninteresting. Write well though and ask for help.
There are 5 essays of 2000 words not including final.4 out 5 essays are written on films. Yes u get to watch movies, but 65% of the material is not interesting. He seems to grade a lil hard on papers. No real hw, except journals that are a page long on the material read. We had no text book so saved money. Overall, hes a good prof, but u must try
THE MOST BORING CLASS IN THE WORLD!!!
Prof. Thomas is a great teacher. He forces you to focus on issues often deemed irrelevant or of little importance. Yes, he does grade kind of hard, but it's college. And true, sometimes class can be boring, but here's the thing, class is for learning; not for entertainment, you can't expect your instructors to keep you entertained the whole time.
He is the worst english teacher i have ever had. He talks about thing useing words that are so elevated that no one in the class can understand him. 4 essays based on movies that a horribly boring. If you dont share the same opinion as him on essays, you will not pass. Dont take him, i promise you will regret it if you do.
Professor Thomas is a nice teacher, but I wouldn't recommend taking his class. The class didn't feel like it had any objective. There are 4 essays on random movies and he does grade hard. He allows only one late paper and there are journals that are due almost every class meeting. Lots of students dropped. Take another professor!
At first I dreaded taking this class because of all the negative feedback on Prof. Thomas, but I ended up getting an A! This class is easy. ATTEND CLASS DISCUSSIONS after movies/readings. He gives you everything he wants on the essays. You just need to be able to regurgitate info, not be lazy, & write at college level!!!
Worst english class ever taken. Is unclear what he wants from papers. It's hard to relate to compare philosophers with movies that are old and boring. Lectures are very very boring. HE GRADES HARD! AND if you do not share his opinion or point of view he will not pass his class. If you can take another class. Save yourself the headache.
For everyone hating on Professor Thomas, SHAME ON YOU! Sure his class is not the most enjoyable thing in the world, but you get credit for going. The journals are a joke, the professor himself tells you HE WILL NOT READ THEM. HE WILL JUST GIVE YOU CREDIT FOR TURNING IT IN!! I Wrote on the Jabbawockeez for about 5 journals and got credit for them.
He is such a hard teacher. He doesn't make it clear on how he wants the essays written. I would avoid taking him for any English classes please avoid as possible
A lot of people thought the class was boring, but it is based on discussion... if you don't put in the effort to discuss, of course it's going to be boring for you! On the whole I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. He is kind of a tough grader, but fair (it IS a college class). Do the work, put in the effort, and you'll do well.
Professor Thomas was very nice, and the discussions werre very long, detailed and exhausting, but in the end you get something out of them. There are rougly 5 1500 word essays the semeseter, all of which I put little to no effort into and recieved B's. He's helpful with his comments and the only real homework is a one page class discussion.
took him for enlgish 67 and what a sweetheart. Very laid back and willing to help if you ask. Best friend is taking him for English 1A and says there is a lot of material involved and missing a day was crucial to her grade. He can be tough but he is willing to help.
You would learn a lot from him but it takes a lot of work. Hard teaher, yes he is willing to help, but doesn't really help at all. Remember to follow the schedule he gives you and you will be fine. If you want an easy A, dun take him!
I thought the class was great. For people pursuing English as a major, this is definitely the class for you. He gives you the freedom to write outside of the prompt. His topics are interesting and strike up great classroom conversation.
A Professor not for everyone. Requires a studious effort to write his essays. If you find English boring, then avoid. However, if you take an active interest in his subjects then you'll find that his reading and writing assignments are quite interesting. For 1C, you will be forced to discuss about subjects such as Relativism, Social satire etc
I thought he was a very nice professor. My writing did improve. Really helpful. Only had to buy a $6 dollar book, so it saved money. I really enjoyed his class. Eassy and great professor. I got a B in the class.
i love english and i love writing and i'm usually an a/b student but he hated every essay i wrote. i even went to the writing lab. and he just gave me c's on everything. he's kind of rude, he talks on and on. he's a hard teacher but not a good hard. he doesnt challenge you he insults you.
I tried taking James Thomas in the Fall of 2000 and was forced to drop the class. He was vague in his teaching and when I went to office for help he told me everything that was wrong with my paper but wouldn't tell me how to fix it. I went on to UCLA and now have a Masters. I have NEVER encountered a worse teacher. :( Do NOT take him.
I took his class for the summer and my writting has improved. I really enjoyed the class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I worked hard & didn't get anything out of his class. I have heard numerous complaints of him being biased when it comes to grading papers & I completely agree in that assessment. If you don't agree with him, then you are not going to get the grade you want no matter how good you paper is. He is also very vague in his directions.
Not a teacher for those looking to be spoon fed. Will help you improve your writing. Will help you if you go to his office and is clear about how to write and what he expects.
Really, really helpful. College level prof, but he'll give you as much help as you're really to ask for. Actually types up his comments for you on your papers and shows you how to do things correctly.
extremely helpful, took a 6wk course and he refined my writing and grammar skills in no time-he's a "real life" person, easy to relate to, funny, organized and doesn't wander or rant about non sense.
There's a TON of writing (4 or 5major papers and a few "little" ones), but he's fun prof. If you like writing then take him, you'll be doing a lot of that. I think I almost killed my printer last semester, but overall I liked the class. Take him.
Take ENGL 67 with Prof.Thomas. He is very helpful and knows how to teach you to write!I took this class winter 2011 and I'm glad that I did because I have more confidence in my writing skills. I learned so much from this class and from Prof.Thomas. His techniques are easy to understand. He is also knowledgeable and explains well. Great class!
So mr thomas is really nice and if you go to his office hours he will help you but not give you the answers. This is a difficult class dealing with difficult content. An A is attainable but it requires u to invest a lot of time on ur essays. 10% journals n reading quizes. 10% in class final. 80% essays. One rewrite. Find an easier teacher.
Professor Thomas is an awesome teacher and is really fair to students. He puts emphasis on his 4 major essays so the final can be dealt with easily making room for other finals. Put in the effort and visit him at office hours every now and then will get you an A. Id attend as much as possible because his lectures really help you with the essays!
To show how hard this class is, this might be the first B i get at SAC after 16 classes. Dont take him. HARD content and he doesnt really help u understand it. U meet him at office hours & he doesnt help much. He speaks to u as if ur a grad student and should know everything. Hes nice n lenient but this class is too hard. Dont take him, trust me.
Hard class. Some tips: dont need to buy they say i say book, use sparknotes translater for heart of darkness, read his packet on the movie/book before doing the essay, go to his office hours to ensure your argument is right, use 5 steps he gives u religiously,do ur journals, attend class n take notes or youll forget, and goodluck! Got an A.
He teaches really well and is clear. I took his class, not expecting to get much out of it, but I learned a lot.
I took his class in the summer and learned a lot! My writing has definitely improved. We only had to buy one $7 book. He quizzes on the book and things we read in class so don't slack off on assigned reading. We only wrote 5 easy, short essays and one final 5 paragraph essay based on the novel. Use the grammer techniques he teaches & you'll get an A.
I took his class this Spring 2013 and it was extremely easy for me. He only assigns 4 essays aside of the final and he allows you to re-do the ones you got a low score on. The final, you can do it ahead of time and copy it into your blue book during the final. he assigns boring books and movies but as long as you read/watch them you'll pass.
He is a nice and boring prof. Possible to get an A once you work hard. He is not a easy grader.
Best Eng 1C teacher. You can tell he really cares about his students and teaching in general.
He is a good professor but hard grader. However he lets you redue a few of the essays and will help as much as he can. I had a D for most of the spring semester but I attended every class and was involved in class discussion so he helped me tremendously by letting me redue three essays and bumping my grade from a 75 to 80. Overall really good.
This class was great. He is extremely thorough when going over the text which can be kind of boring but as long as you have your topic picked out and ask him about it his long discussion going over it is very beneficial. He is a hard grader BUT you can rewrite your essays at the end of the semester. Cheap books too.
He's an okay professor, but I would recommend him. I took him during winter intersession. Few quizzes and mostly grades on essays. Essay topics are ok. He allows students to use their technology devices for essays, which was pretty cool (ex: dictionary, thesaurus, etc.).
Honestly, i never felt confident about my grammar as i do now. Also, he's straightforward, and the novel required to read was rather interesting. I would definitely take his class again
Wonderful professor available for feedback. His lectures and topics are interesting. Papers on movies we watch in class. Truly a critical thinking class. A must take!
He's an ok professor. He's very thorough in his lectures but make sure to pay attention because you can use his ideas to write your papers. 4 essays count as 80% of your grade so if you're not a great writer don't take him. Tough grader. I'm a decent writer and was stuck with a C all semester. Must read because there are quizzes almost every class.
Took this class in the fall of 2015. This class was quite difficult, but I did learn. Take at one's risk because he grades to a certain style that former students of his know how to do. The class was assigned four essays (based on 3 movies and a book), a few journals, had some quizzes, and final was on a movie which was watched in class.
I took this professor for the fall semester the first essay he does not grade too heavy. But after that he gets really tough on grading. On two essays I "earned" a 68, yeah he becomes that type of grader. If you are a C type of writer do not take.
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR THIS SEMESTER. HE USUALLY TEACHES HIGHER LEVEL ENGLISH BUT HE IS SO PATIENT AND THOROUGH. VERY FUNNY AND INTERESTING. EXPLAINS OVER AND OVER UNTIL EVERYONE GETS IT. ALWAYS GIVES MORE TIME TO FINISH AT HOME IF NEEDED. DAILY JOURNALS AND 6 PAPERS. DAILY QUIZ ON NOVEL SO KEEP UP ON THE READING.
Great professor, one of the best teachers I've had by far. Somewhat hard on grading and attendance so you better be ready to work. If you're a -miss class about half the time- type of stupid you WILL fail. Don't slack on doing the daily journals and come ready to write. Nice and very respected teacher, but will not tolerate any slacking.
First semester back in college after 15 years and this man made me feel very confident about my future. Absolutely FANTASTIC
If you want an easy semester DO NOT take him. He makes you work for your grade and he is really tough on grading. If you are not a strong writer then you will definitely suffer the semester. There are 4 mandatory essays throughout the semester that are 80% each. 10% based on quizzes and final exam. As much as I hate him I learned from him though.
If you speak your mind in this class, the teacher will go after your grade. I had an A+ last semester in English 1 A (different teacher). I got a B with this teacher. I know it is not because of my writing. He picks very inflammatory subjects, and if you have a different opinion than his, than your grade will suffer. unethical , I wish I can say m
I took eng67 during winter it was an easy A. He is very caring and polite. Very helpful and teaches you how to write a proper essay. Definitely recommend his class
4 papers (80%) and 10% quizzes make up the entire grade, do the reading for the quiz. If writing isnt a strong point you will struggle, although he does give a choice on the final that brings up the worst paper score. He is really funny and I enjoyed the subjects we read/wrote about. Does not give clear feedback when proofreading drafts though.
Best tip I can give is start on your essays early( worth 80% of your grade)and see him for feedback and critics. Go to lectures bcs your grade on essays is based solely off topics discussed in class. Class requires extreme analysis of the quotes so if you are not a good essay writer I wouldn't recommend this course. Made me a better writer though.
He definitely doesn't hand you your grade, but he develops your thinking, helps you find the hidden inferences, and truly provides a relevant class discussion. You can email him your essay before its due and he will read it and give feedback. Participate in class and he will love you and be more inclined to help you. Loved him.
Was really reluctant to take Professor Jt's class considering this was my final semester at Mt sac but let me say this, Professor Thomas is really a diamond in the rut. He makes himself openly available and will try his hardest to ensure that you pass hiss class. Very rarely am I blown away how cool a professor can be but JT is an awesome guy.
took him in the spring semester, and dam, he is a good professor. Very respectful and always there when you need him. The only thing to worry about are the 4 essays. Also gave extra credit once, and was super generous on the last essay. he also doesn't pick on people to talk, if he asks a question to the class and no one answers, he'll answer it.
Changes the way essays are supposed to be written is so odd on how he wants his essays
Perfect teacher in every way. Will work with you and gives excellent feedback.
This was a full class and at the end of spring semester there were 10 people left, so...
Professor Thomas is super chill and helps a lot with papers. His readings are always interesting! There are a lot of writing assignments, but if you need help he gives great feedback to better structure your essays for what he's looking for. Participation is not required but it does show him you are involved with the class and understand.
He is a fair grader. Also really nice guy. Accidentally messed up a quiz online (totally my fault) during COVID times and he let me retake it. Super understanding and just wants you to succeed. He gave most books to us but you have to get one or two. Discussion heavy and a paper per book.
During Covid it was hard to get to some assignments and I couldn't attend zooms due to work schedule. Professor JT emailed me constantly checking up on me, and was very fair on my essays and gave great feedback. I definitely recommend him if you have essay anxiety, very sweet and caring guy. Made English bearable during these online classes.
I loved James Thomas. I love the books he used and he doesnt give out too much work you have 3 essays and final essay. He gives great feedback. Was excellent in pandemic and always replied really fast. I regret not reaching out to him but he was a great professor who used interesting books.
You will enjoy the readings for ENG1C! He gives extensive feedback and advice; he is very approachable and made it easy to ask for help. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I think some days he gets up at 4 AM and starts writing back to hundreds of his students! I would highly recommend his classes; be ready to work hard!
This is a critical thinking class, of course it will be harder than a regular English class. He really tries to help. My big thing is that for essays he gives lots of corrections but doesn't say how to apply them. Your grade is impacted by essays, don't know why I bother taking quizzes since it does nothing to my grade. Follow directions and GL.
Discussion boards every week, simple but requires effort. READ THE RUBRIC FOR THE ESSAYS, there's 4. All rubrics are clear, he even provided us an example essay. Most people don't do well the first time because he cares a lot about the structure and content of each essay section. Quizzes are easy; often about reading material.
I loved taking Professor Thomas's class for English 1C. He provided good feedback for essays and had office hours as well where he asked any questions I had. The class is interesting because he picks really good books to discuss.
Professor Thomas is a gem! Helped me improve my writing immensely. Always there for office hours. I recommend you constantly drop by during office hours as he gives great essay feedback. He replies quickly to emails and is always there to help. As long as you put the effort in, you can get a good grade in this class. He makes the class enjoyable!
This class topic is about civil rights. You can tell how knowledgable he is, he didn't lecture much, he always give a voice to student to share our thoughts. At first, his class could be intimating, but he always be there to help. He is always happy for you to ask questions, and he is very friendly.
In his class, workshopping on your discussions/essays is highly encouraged. He gives great feedback on your work, and cares about your success in the class. You put in the work for critical thinking and feedback to other students, you will get a good grade. I highly appreciate having him as a professor for this class.
Prof Thomas class is not easy. You need to be a very good critical thinker. But dnt worry, he helps you through it and really gives u good feedbacks on ur writings. Not as much homework, also he gives an extra day grace period. If u rlly put your thoughts into ur discussions and essays, he will definitely notice and give you a good grade.
Great professor! The only class that I truly learned from. Really challenging and a lot of reading. He is always there to help and truly wants his students to succeed. Grades are mainly based on the major essays, but a decent portion of it is covered by quizzes and discussions.
Professor Thomas is a great choice if you enjoy hearing professors talk for the whole class duration. I can't tell you how many times I dozed off in his class. His grading is heavily based on essays and the quizzes at the beginning of class. His handouts based on the reading were pointless since he does not give credit for answering the questions.
Professor Thomas has genuinely made me a better writer; his feedback is fantastic and very useful. I find myself applying the tips and tricks he gave me in his class to my other writing classes. Additionally, he is always available during his office hours and is there to assist the students.
I don't hesitate to say that I LOVED taking Prof. Thomas. Lectures were so enlightening and he was very good at getting critical thinking skills into my head, granted with some difficulty. He provides extensive notes on essays, even if positive, and really helped me understand his analytical process, and work on mine. Great post-class talks, too.
Professor Thomas is fantastic.
none of his feedback actually helped me. Marked down assignments for the stupidest things
terrible teacher. Makes me actively hate english class
He was an insane stickler when it came to grading. He would mark down a ton of points if you missed tiny aspects or overall just give you a zero on the entire assignment. This class seriously stressed me out and totally unecessarily. If you're not a really good essay writer, don't take.
I wish everyday that I took a different teacher.
Unclear grading criteria. Extremely meticulous grader acting like his class is actually relevant. This made me hate English. So many better teachers than Jim Thomas
If you're reading this review, just don't take. Save yourself the headache. There's other teacher it's ok. Don't take
I don't understand why Jim Thomas graded the way he did. Unless you are an English major, there's no point to taking a teacher who grades so strictly. This class genuinely acted as an obstacle in my education. Aweful
