By far the worst teacher ever. Cited facts not known to students he says that they are already obvious facts. Gives the worst instruction. I had him read my thesis statement and he said it was fine for my paper. After I turned it in he says my thesis staement does not fit, after I had him approve it before hand.

This class was a waste of time, I never skipped and I never learned. The class was too wishy washy. No lectures, just opinions from the teacher and student. Easy grade though, if you did all of the work. Creative final, not a test.

Lots of expensive and unecssary books that are REQUIRED but used little within class! Be warned he is a ruthless grader.

Was very excited to begin my very first journalism class, however I recall one day out of ten weeks where we actually focused on the fundamentals of journalism. Very upsetting. I literally opened my 90$ textbook once and we discussed nothing in the text book. All we did was talk about nothing in particular. It was a waste of time, money and class.

Where do I start? This teacher is a freak, hes a jerk and is so unclear on what he wants in an essay. I learned more about him and his personal life that I did about English. He picks favorites too. I had a one on one tutor and I still got a C+, I was expecting a B at least. He is totally rude and I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. HOnestly.

I don't believe the curriculum met the criteria set forth for 101. We didn't write a variety of essays, but many essays of one type: exploring our feelings about graphic novels. Analyzing the structure or execution of the genre (you know, thinking about HOW TO WRITE?) was discouraged. This class won't prepare you for college writing.

Do not take this class. The teacher is not helpful at all. I did not learn a thing, and in fact the teacher made me feel a little stupid. He does not clarify assignments for you when you ask he just tells you to go re-read the directions he has posted.

Hands down, this was the most obnoxious class I've ever taken. JT is absolutely terrible at answering questions, on top of very poorly written instructions for assignments. He gives the class a crappy 10 minute video of how to write in different forms- but doesn't do much to help explain further, leading to low graded assignments. I thought I was suppose to learn from this class- but instead I had a constant struggle with trying to figure out exactly what he wanted. Horrible professor.

If you're not the best writer out there do not take this class! Rather than help you improve on you're writing he simply grades you down and tells you that you didn't read the directions correctly and is a very hard grader.

Horrible prof! For a 101 class it is ridiculous. There is no learning curve when it comes to grading, your first assignments will be graded with the same standards as your last. At first it seems clear what is being asked for, then you get your grade back with very little explanation that doesnt seem to make sense. I got VERY little from this class

Does not make his expectations clear. Graded harshly, yet rarely engaged the class with anything meaningful. Kept saying "summary not analysis", did not understand the concept of using examples from the text to prove a point. During quarter he said he was "really busy" b/c interviewing new faculty hires - it came off bragging and pretentious.

James is so awkward is kills my soul. All we did this quarter was talk about stuff that has nothing to do with English. All of my essay's get C's and B's because I used examples from the book to back up my analysis. According to him, that is describing that book and not using my own words. So I can't even talk about the book in my essay. He sucks.

James is a really hard teacher for a 101 class. I feel like I haven't learned anything from him because we are always exploring the same type of essays. No matter what you do, you will probably receive one or two 100% scores throughout the quarter. I do not recommend taking him if you plan on getting an A in English 101.

This class was way too difficult to be a 101 class. My writing worsened because of James. Do not take especially if you have hopes of being a writer like I did...

I will just say one thing that should clear how little this professor cares about your grade. at the end of the class a 10 page research paper was due Tuesday night at midnight, Wednesday by noon I already had a grade back with zero feedback provided. In the business world this is called pencil whipping it. STEER CLEAR!

I'm going to preface this by saying James is a nice guy and more than willing to help students outside of class; however he is one of the worst English teachers I have had. We spent more time in class discussing social issues than anything else. In fact we barely discussed grammar at all. I cannot recommend him you will not learn or improve at all.

Let me just say that I turned in my final 14 page paper along with everyone else late on a Tuesday and magically it was graded and posted 12 hours later with no feedback given. Avoid this professor if you care to have your work actually rewarded.

Please for the sake of your GPA, stay away from this teacher. You will not learn anything, even if you meet with them in person. Im highly disappointed with this class. I have two A's and now one C. He isn't specific and will tell you the same thing over and over. If I've learned anything from this class its to not use the book when writing.

AWFUL! Attendance is required 6 days a week (you will be marked down if you do not post each day). Assigned reading is all graphic novels about which you can expect to write no less than the equivalent of a 5 page essay weekly. Grading rubric is frustratingly vague, and instructor feedback is grossly unhelpful.

I have a hard time admitting to myself that I have so much difficulty reading a comic book. So, I'm skeptical about the educational value of graphic novels. On the other hand, I believe everything I read on the internet, especially if it agrees with my own assumptions. So I came here.

I flunked out of three English classes so far. This was the worst one by far! I don't know why my mom keeps registering me for these stupid classes, but she always told me I'm not a loser.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! The absolute worst teacher you will ever have. Not very understanding, way to much writing and reading. Ridiculous and acts like a robot. Was no help in benefiting my writing skills. He should not be allowed to be a teacher. Every week is the same thing. 20 to 25 paragraphs per week and sometimes more. Just God awful.

Where do I start, eng 101 was composed of only essays, and in class was just you and the class talking about social issues. This class did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help my essays or grammer, the prompts are vague, use examples and your writing a summary in his eyes. Absolutely worst English teacher I've ever had. He keeps telling me the same things, and he doesn't use any examples either. This class is actually harder than my calculus class.

Does not do anything to teach you about any of the topics, and pretty much expects you to have the entire course done. His comments do not help me understand what he really wants, and are very unspecific. DO NOT take this professor, even if he is the last person available if you want to save your GPA.

I had to turn a certain paper in over 10 times and it caused me to almost fail the class because the teacher kept changing what he wanted me to do.

Never take this professor he will make you submit assignments over and over again in the ridiculous way he has you do them. He wants you to describe the book without using and quotes or paraphrasing. He sets the class to almost seem like you are destined to fail. Do not take him horrible professor

Only two essays, it is almost impossible to pass this class. If you are an English major, he may be great for you. For those of us who choose to major in something other than English, his expectations are unclear, and confusing. Pre nursing students DO NOT take his class. It can ruin your gpa and delay you from applying to the program. BEWARE

I signed up for his class online, IT WAS SO HARD TO SATISFY HIM. He has a 7 step writing process to turn in ONE essay. I didn't get passed the first writing step of the first essay for a month because he was so vague, one-sided and unhelpful. I dropped the class at the last moment to save my GPA and my life. don't take his class, you will drop out

Very strange class, the subject of study is comic books. You have to write essays about strange Iranian girl and requirements are very high, despite the fact that book is made of pictures with very little text. The teacher is extremely demanding with zero assistance and zero cooperation. He is checking e-mail once a week. Very bad class.

He wasn't very clear on what he wanted from me from the essays and when I went to my tutor to get help for the writing process which was really stupid they weren't able to help me after I went 5 times. It was a complete waste of my time and money. Don't take this class unless you want to fail.

Super vague, provides no real feedback or help with your struggles trying to understand what he wants. Taking english 101 and he provides no teaching yet expects english 101 level writing. Reading other peoples complaints I assume he has over assigned the same papers and now has a superimposed view of how everyone else's papers should turn out.

this guy should not be a professor for an English 101 class.. why are the English classes after 101 so much easier to pass? You have to do a 7 step process just to write an essay about the books he assigns.. it is so hard to pass those steps as nothing you write is good enough for this guy.

This professor asks you to express your own ideas, but then fails you because he doesn't like your ideas.. SO REALLY, he wants you to express the ideas HE likes. What a waste of time and money.

I never made it past the first assignment in this class. I would turn in my assignment and he would this prof. would say something is missing. I would then fix that missing thing, and he would say there's too much of it. I went down this cycle the entire year, (write, turn in, fix, repeat) and the feedback I would get, would all contradict itself.

Oh my god he is so difficult I wanted to cry. I took his class online I had to redo an assignment so many times because he wouldnt like the way its done. His instructions are unclear and make no sense and whatever you do hell never be satisfied. SAVE YOUR GPA dont take this class with this professor

Be aware that this professor is super picky and terrible at giving corrections. The class I had with him required we completed the previous assignment before being able to move on, and I kid you not, I re-did the second assignment 8 times before the class ended and I got an F. I paid over $100 in tutoring and it still didn't help. Awful experience.

James is a tough grader for a community college level English teacher. Throughout my quarter I questioned if I was a complete dummy for not understanding his writing needs. Nope! Even my family, friends and other English tutors didn't understand his comments. After a tremendous amount of brainstorming and writing, I nearly failed this course.

This is the worst professor I've ever had. The worst grader. Eng 101 is a requirement & I wasn't expecting an easy A either but the best grade I've gotten in that class was a 45%. I had to drop, he wouldn't help me at all. Left such rude comments on all of my work & not constructive at all. Seems like he doesn't care that we have other classes.

This is the worst class I have ever taken if you want to save your GPA at all in your early years, avoid this class! Prof is very unclear with his instructions and what he expects from you. Feedback is non-specific and generally repetitive. The way he talks to you and gives you feedback makes it seems he does not care about you or your grade. AVOID

I took this class because I needed the credit, but I was excited because I love to write. This man took my passion and stomped on it. Repeatedly. I couldn't make it past the outline stage because he continually gave me contradicting advice, and when I asked for more specifics, he said he couldn't read my mind and therefore couldn't help me. AVOID!!

Nothing that hasn't been said in other reviews. This professor is unspecific, difficult to read or understand. He will tell you he likes your ideas when you show frustration but will then be repetitive with his critiques. I had two phone appointments with him to understand his grading style better. This is my first English class outside of high school. I am only 2 weeks in and I have already cried twice. He gives no help. He is unclear. I go to tutoring everyday and spent too much money on professional tutors just to get a D. AVOID HIS CLASS.

I recommend this class only on the chance that you hate yourself. I have yet to see an assignment in his class other than quizzes that have an average grade above a C. He isn't just a hard grader. He's an impossible grader, who doesn't want a paper that makes the audience think and engage, but agrees with his ideas about the book.

He has a very specific way he wants you to write which is not clearly expressed on the essay rubric. He generally grades our assignments as if we're all incompetent; on one recent assignment, the highest grade he gave anyone in the ENTIRE class was 5/30. Avoid this class unless you have no other options.

What a frustrating professor! I learned a lot, but through many frustrated tears. He is adamant about getting YOUR thoughts and not summary, but will grade you poorly when YOUR thoughts arent the thoughts HE wants you to have. Loved the books he assigned, I had a phone call that was a delight and I heard his passion, but still, would not recommend

At the beginning of class, I had no idea what I was doing. I had many fails, but at least we had 3 chances to get a better grade in the assignments given. His feedback barely helped me improve in his class. It was until the last few assignments where I started getting good grades and understood what he expected from me.

Most difficult professor I have taken at BC. Save yourself from taking this class and take any other professor. He is extremely vague and unclear when giving feedback and repeats the same jumble of confusing words every time. His grading makes no sense and he essentially hands out Fs to everyone per the class average grade. Just don't take him.

I dropped this class 10 days in. I immediately felt like something was missing. There were no lessons, lectures, discussion, or much of anything to teach us about writing. He gave very vague instruction of what he wanted from us, and he grades really harshly. First assignment felt more focused on social issues rather than learning how to write.

Took this class back in Spring 22 due to Bellevue College swapping my instructor last minute, for the 2nd quarter in a row of trying to take English 201. Decided to give it a chance, and was on the road to failing the class within 2 weeks and withdrew. Retook English 201 with a better instructor (David Kopp) over the Summer and ended up with an A.

I am in professor Torrence's class right now and I wish I could drop it, but I can't. I like writing and am a good writer, but nothing I write is good enough for this him. He contradicts himself in his feedback and i get the feeling that he just wants me to write about his personal ideas instead of my own. I'm not learning or growing on any skills.

This Professor Requires his permission to do any of the work assigned to you and when you want to fix your grade he does not respond on ways to fix it for a few days then when you ask him to grade something he will reply with i "severly doubt that you fixed it" and wont grade it for a few weeks.

It feels like he wants you to be at a certain level at the start of the class and has no interest in helping you get meet his expectations. He wants to see something specific and if you dont meet this expectation he grades harshly. I still don't know what I am doing wrong because it is so hard to get in contact with him.

Unnecessarily tough grader for English 101. Expects everything to be done a certain way and if not, he insinuates that you for not even trying. Class average on brainstorming assignment was 5/30.

This professor only cares about what people have to say about the textbooks and their analysis since the intended audience is presumed to have already read them. This is what I've struggled with since I couldn't form an opinion or analysis without help. Even worse, even if I did work hard on the assignments he gave me, his grading was low.

If you want to learn how to write good essays DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. His grading was incredibly hard. If you have a few issues he gives you a straight F. His feedback is very vague and does not help at all with fixing your work. To get help from him is a whole other process because if you have questions you have to make them specific and concise.

Oof. If you want to pass, don't take this class. You will break your back trying to get a passing grade and barely do so. Vague feedback, conflicting feedback, cannot be satisfied by anything. Insane for a required English 101 credit. I am a straight A student otherwise and I got a D-. I have never in my entire life experienced grading this harsh.

Absolute worst professor I have dealt with throughout the entirety of my college experience. I ended up taking his same ENG101 twice and only passing with a C the second time I completed it despite working harder than I have ever worked in any other class. He offers a lot of feedback, but none of it is even relatively helpful at all.

James Torrence is an extremely hard grader and it is challenging to please him, His feedback is highly unhelpful, and talking to him is like him talking in circles. I would not recommend taking this class unless you want an extreme drop in your grade or GPA.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I kept getting horrible grades and felt like I was missing something or doing something wrong until I realized the ENTIRE CLASS was getting horrible grades as well. If you miss even ONE small thing, he will grade you below 50%. I worked extremely hard in this class and got nothing in return except bad grades and tears.

AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST. The worst professor. Nothing but F, D, and C- grades despite enormous time and effort. If you registered, DROP IT NOW. If past the deadline, WITHDRAW. I felt like there was no point in turning in a assignment in this class as no matter how hard I tried or communicated I would always get a failing grade. The worst professor I have ever had in my life. He is a nice dude, but his grading abilities are very confusing to put it lightly. The most miserable 3 months of my life because of his class. As a student, the experience with this teacher has been awful. The lack of any examples and contradictory instructions has made it extremely difficult. The feedback received is often vague and confusing. Just when I think I understand the assignment I'm met with an F and again vague feedback, leaving me extremely discouraged and confused.

IT IS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE THIS HARD FOR A ENGL101!!!! He will never be satisfying with anything. He will give you such a hard assignment for an English 101 class. His email this confusing and not clear at all. Take anybody but him if you dont want to get an F on the assignments.

Long story short, take this professor if you like ripping your hair out and find great gratitude in torturing yourself. If you need ENG101, wait until the next term.

An ENG101 community college professor expecting Stanford and Yale level writing, extremely unhelpful responses to emails, not to mention the horrible class policies and insane grading. Do yourself a favor and take a different professor, if there are no other professors don't take this class at all, for your own sake.

Seemed fine at first but what revealed was unreasonable expectations and even more unreasonable reasoning surrounding it. DO NOT waste your time and energy.

RS STUDENTS: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I went from getting A's in Honors and IB English to getting below or barely passing grades in this class. This is a required class for me to graduate and now I have to take it again so that I can walk at graduation. FIND A DIFFERENT TEACHER. Crazy policies, mess up once you're screwed for the rest of the quarter.

I wanted to quit at life during the duration I was in his class. After all these reviews, I'm surprised he is still employed. I am an extremely strong writer but I felt looked down on and ashamed because of him.

He makes you look for quotes and parts of the book, then when you write the essay and use the quotes you found, he takes points off and says "Too much summary". Horrible teacher, would not take it again. insanely tough grading, his responses are detailed but rarely helpful, and the course policy doesn't let you work ahead.

He asks for an unreasonable amount of work and does not provide any real feedback. He never replies to questions with useful information, and what he does tell you is often concordatory to any examples he gave. I ended up dropping the class as I couldn't take it anymore. If you need to take English, take it with a someone else.

Genuinely awful experience. I've been fantastic at English my whole life, I write for fun and enjoy the whole process. No matter what I did, I'd get knocked points like crazy, and he'd give essentially useless feedback. There were no examples making his goals completely incomprehensible, especially as someone with autism.

Went from a 4.0 last quarter, two nothing but f's. All of his feedback made no difference on the next assignment. It was all fail, no matter what I did. I decided to google him and found this and immediately dropped the class. I'm now on probation and owe money. I really don't know how he is still employed if everyone drops his class.

Horrible. Was sick for a good 2 weeks, and was unable to get out of bed. Everything went downhill. There are maybe 6-7 assignments per book we read, out of 2 BOOKS. And his expectations are of Ivy League level writing, not intro ENG101. Meaning getting a bad grade on one assignment drops you. Does not TEACH, just meanly critiques. Horrible teacher.

Super strict grader, I am a straight A student and his grading was insanity. His feedback is so vague and he will contradict himself repeatedly. Your GPA will drop if you take a class with him. I wish I listened to my gut and dropped the class as soon as I read his first super rude message to the class.. It was like he wanted you to fail.

James Torrence is genuinely the worst teacher I have ever had in my life by far. I did the same assignment 3 times trying to get a better grade. Each time, he gave the same, unhelpful feedback. Worst experience I've ever had with a professor. You cannot start the next assignment until the previous one is given feedback, the issue with this is that he often waits until 1-2 days before the next assignment is due to give vague, unhelpful, and contradictory feedback. Even if you follow his instructions and email him he will grade you unfairly

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM, the worst teacher I've ever had from BC. if you want to waste your time and money then go ahead..... he didn't teach, feedback was horrible, you can talk to him like going to get helped but no, he asked you your question back and make it even more complicated.

Made me feel absolutely inferior by how he graded. Criticized on a lot of things and set too much of a high standard for students. He expected for students to understand EXACTLY as to what we were assigned, but majority of his instructions were too vague then treated you unfairly if it didn't satisfy him.

He made me want to slit my throat. Took this class as an RS to get rid of my gen-eds in university. Well I'm stuck taking English again.

PLEASE do not take his class. It was literally the WORST class I have ever taken. His grading system was a joke, none of his feedback made sense, and he was anything but helpful. His class is a waste of time, tears, and money. Do yourself a favor and pick a different professor for ENGL101.

Extremely picky.

Don't take him! His class itself isn't hard, there's only 1 assignment a week apart from the first 3 assignments per book. But his feedback is terrible, it's so VAGUE & doesn't actually tell you what he wants. He's good if you are already a good writer and analyzer, if you struggle even a little bit, you will not get the grade you are hoping.

The worst experience I've had in a class in my life. His feedback is worthless, you will not feel like you're improving one bit. He also refuses to accommodate students or understand that someone may be impeded by something out of their control. If you need to take English 101, wait a quarter until someone else is available.

Worst teacher ever don't take it

The worst professor I have ever had in my whole life. Taking his class was probably the worst mistake I have ever made for my education. I do not really know how he is still teaching, and whoever says he is good, IS NOT TRUE.

I don't even have this professor for this quarter, but just having other english professors to compare him to make him that much worse of a professor. He is THAT bad, do not take.

First time during running start this year, and this teacher is by far the worst. I took it fall quarter 2025. You read 2 graphic novels, and wrote essays about both. Weekly assignments that build up your essays. Feedback is not helpful and grades super harshly on the essays, dropped my grade because of it. Do not take his class, big mistake!!

If your options are either skipping english this quarter or taking this professor's class, skip.

He is a very tough grader. And when asked for clarification, repeats what he already said. Does not actually try to explain in a different way. All instructions are vague and not clear. I would understand this type of grading if it was a higher level class. But this is a introductory to college writing class.

Such vague feedback and really tough grader, don't do what I did and don't take his class. No, just don't. Please. I beg you.

He has over 80 pages of course materials and his blanket reply to most questions is just "go read the course materials". Yeah. Very helpful. His answers to questions and responses to assignments are very vague and contradictory. His assessment of the work often differs from what he specifically outlined in the rubric. Not appropriate for a 101.

RUNNN AWAYY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!!!! Literally I edited my essay so many times and one time I even erased the whole thing and did it again but the feedback was the same thing, no real feedback on how to improve. I went from an straight A student to receveing C+ because of this professor. really tough grader & doesn't help at all. no extra credit T-T
