First of all, he made CALC1000 slightly unbearable but changing AM1201 during a pandemic was a terrible idea. Geoff and James really destroyed this course and the only thing keeping it afloat is Dr. Pattenden. To all future students, good luck.

Absolutely doodoo in calc1000 & am1201. Tyler is the sole reason we are passing and understand anything. Course was definitely super easy if taught right but they manage to make 1 + 1 the hardest thing in the world.

This course is very poorly coordinated. Uren and Wild do not listen to the students' concerns (especially about Mobius) and whenever you email Uren you get a very rude response in return.

So James Uren didn't do anything for Calc 1000. Except for sending out monthly updates thru email. You are forced to read a poorly-written textbook online with no real lectures. Looks like he's the "coordinator" for Calc again, I'd suggest staying far away from Uren.

All I'm going to say is 2021 October Term test. And also TA's being unable to grade for their life. Please, if you can avoid Calc, just take linear algebra. Harder, but from what I hear, it's more rewarding and more intuitive.

The worst teacher does not listen to student complaints about Mobius. The October Term Test was graded on most things we were taught poorly. Everyone I've talked to failed, and he tried to cover up by not posting the class average. He failed the students.

Mans should not be the course coordinator. Absolute dookie at teaching, coordinating and organizing the course. Delays giving us our marks and refuses to curve up the 1st midterm (probably will do the same for the 2nd) even though the average is a failing mark. This waste mans failed his students, failed his TAs, and even the course staff hate him.

My experience with Professor Uren's class has been the worst part of university. Uren's incompetence, the midterm was a failing average. He hid the midterm average from students, and after students tried to contact him on the help forum (our only form of contact), he took down the forum. The only form of communication in an online class.

As someone who LOVED MCV4U and got a 97, I absolutely HATED CALC1000. James' tests are so hard and he puts in content that wasn't covered in the syllabus. He is a bit disorganized and the textbook he makes us read is so poorly written ( I caught a good amount of typos and grammatically incorrect statements)

Avoid this class if you can. James Uren has made this one of the most disorganized classes I have ever taken. There is almost 4 hours worth of lectures per week through videos, despite the fact that we are only supposed to have 2 lecture hours per week. There is almost 16 hours of work per week, which is ridiculous to expect from a first year.

this guy made an exam that was so hard the average for the entire course was 50%, i used to love math now im dropping cs in general, thanks james.

Absolutely horrible instructor. The first midterm, majority failed and those who did not fail did very poorly. He hid the average of it for more than a month and finally posted an average but instead of ours, he posted the midterm average from the last year. Insane amount of work and none of the examples or problems assigned are similar to exam Qs.

Coming to Western for science? You better love calculus. James Uren and the instructional team are the worst possible people to teach this course. I did more work for this course than all my other classes combined. The final exam definitely had a failing average, but we will never know because James will hide it like he did for the first midterm.

For an introductory course, I've never seen so many students struggle alongside me. Uren was not consistent in emailing back, the lecture videos were horrible to follow along with, the material was rushed every week, especially the last 3 weeks which was the hardest and new stuff we have not covered in high school. Beware and avoid this man

Medsci had to literally change year three admission rules. They wouldnt curve 50% test avg, stating that theyd curve the final grade if need be. However, since many kids dropped the course after test1 (due to the rule change) the class average went up substantially, making it look as if the course was a success, while the true avg would be lower.

I learned more from Khan Academy and The Organic Chemistry Tutor than I did from the lectures, tutorials, and textbook combined. The online textbook was horrid and made learning any new little thing a chore. The final had questions that weren't even touched on in the lectures or textbook. May God help future students of him. Do better James.

Worst class Ive ever taken

James Uren is the sweetest professor ever. When I emailed him a question he immediately showed up to my dorm room to answer my question. Additonally, his lectures are so clear and tests were so easy that I got 110 despite failing all my other courses papa uren also assigns barely any homework and really motivates me to come to every tutorial

After being told 'the final will focus on material not covered on test 1 or 2' I studied integration extensively. Little did I know that only 4 integrals would appear on the test and theyd be harder than any id seen before. This was the most unfair final ever. James has spread the cheeks of the calc course and rawdogged it to the ground. gg

this course is unfair by all means. There are no lectures, but there are weekly assignments and quizzes, and midterms/finals that will make you rethink your life choices. No amount of studying can prepare you for this year's final, something needs to be done about this course.

Calc 1000 was meant to be hard, but James Uren makes it near impossible. The man makes no lectures and no effort to actually help students. on top of this, he makes the midterms and finals absolutely unfair. I have had no interaction with James, and I hope I never do. I feel as though I would dislike him on a personal level.

I dont understand how you manage to mess up two important tests. How are you gonna test use on things we never learned. We can already barely learn from those horrible lecture videos, but this man still decides to make the final exam COMPLETELY unrelated and really hard. Truthfully, Uren's course was far more difficult than it needed to be. The class median on the first exam was a 54. Fortunately, the quizzes and assignments were there to help boost your mark a little. His final exam was quite difficult as well. This class is doable, but Uren won't make it easy. If you're about to take Calc 1000, prepare for pain.

this class is psychological warfare against students. There is not even a possibility of doing well no matter how hard you study the 16+ hrs of work/wk bc the exam and course content don't align. Course is very disorganized, mobius is not reliable, and 'prof' is not accessible. If anyone is thinking of pursuing sciences, western is NOT IT.

Words cannot describe the agony that this man has invoked upon the students of Calc1000A. It was under James Uren's supervision that a generation was massacred in the quagmires of suffering that were the first midterm and the final exam. Like a disorientated soldier at Passchendaele, all us students could do was grasp at the illusion of salvation.

Doing the homework/quizzes, watching all the lectures, and attending tutorials ended up being the most useless thing ever when it came to the examination content. The exams felt like it wasn't even for the same class. The lectures ESPECIALLY useless, the class was directed horribly and was made to set students up to fail. Please avoid him & UWO.

worst grade ive ever had. if u dont have to take this course then dont!!! its so bad. test materials are 10x worse than what is taught in class so even if youre doing ur work, its not enough. prep101 helped but it sucks that i had to get help from outside rather than profs.

calcwas an absolute disaster this semester. hardest class I took last semester mainly due to ridiculously hard midterm and final exams. weekly quizzes and assignments were also very time consuming and stressful. Primarily taught this course to myself by reading textbook which added stress and overall just felt this class was overly hard/stressful.

Worst experience of my life, this course stole my happiness. The lectures are long and seemingly useless. Reading the textbook thoroughly and doing every SINGLE practice problem was the only reason I was able to succeed. His tutorials are fairly helpful, but the course itself has unrealistic expectations and extremely difficult tests/exams .

This was one of the most unorganized courses I have ever taken. Not only was there very limited communication from the instructors, but the provided lecture videos barely covered any topic. Basically a self-study. I believe that no amount of studying for this course could prepare you for the difficulty of questions on the midterm or final.

I actually enjoyed math up until this first year. Prof Uren has no idea how to run a class for first years who only have a high school level of knowledge in regards to Calculus. For my CALC 1301B course, I got tutoring from a masters student in mathematics and him along with another math prof both had trouble understanding certain assignments.

AM1201 is awful. james uren did not even take the time to give us lectures.

Uren expects too much from his students. Most are coming in with very little prior knowledge on these topics and yet the course is designed and taught as though we are at a much higher level of understanding. He lacks empathy, making the course even more difficult despite the learning gaps many of us have due to online school. Get prep/wize to pass

Every single test and exam was absurdly hard, the short videos explaining small things or examples instead of lectures are not helpful. 100% a self-study course.

This course was the most poorly organized course I have ever taken. The textbook is filled with a random assortment of upper-year math terms and is nothing like what is on quizzes or exams. As course coordinator, there was no coordination in terms of the content being graded versus "taught." Do not take this course.

Uren was a nightmare. Not only was he a horrible teacher, his grading makes me want to toss bits of my corpse to the geese on campus. He refuses to curve our cruel and sadistic final, and apparently doesn't care about students at all. Please avoid. Him and Geoff Wild together have permanently destroyed a piece of my soul :)

I had him in CALC 1000 and had the worst time ever. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced and I definitely will not be taking a class that has anything to do with him again.

Most useless lectures ever! Go get yourself a tutor and learn the entire course by yourself because anything he teaches you will be completely useless during the tests and exams. If your thinking to take calc 1000 with james... dont. Theres no lectures he posts "videos" that he gets off youtube. The exams r ridiculously hard, insane amounts of homework each week. He didnt even tell us how many questions were going to be on the final. He doesnt answer emails, or really speak to his students.

Course work is fair, put the work in and you will get good results. In terms of emailing Dr. Uren, just put any expectations you have out the window. 1) Takes forever to reply and 2) Very useless responses from him. Most of the time he will criticize your question instead of actually answering it.

I am writing this for Calc 1301. Do not take this course unless you 100% have to. I am good at calc, getting a 92 in Calc 1000 but this course is hard, and taught very poorly. Every teacher has a thick accent and cannot teach well, and the exams are way harder than any practice questions. This course will kill your GPA so take applied math.

Uren's lectures are not needed to pass the course. In the time he completes two example questions, you can understand the entire unit by watching separate videos. Do not take a course under Uren unless you absolutely have to. Should be a last resort.

Calc 1000 final was crazy

Calc 1000 was one of the hardest courses I have taken in University. The final exam was nothing like the practice finals from any of the years. Got eaten up for breakfast lunch and dinner plus snack by the letter e.

Quizzes are easy, and assignments are tough, but 25% of the grade is "free". You don't have an actual prof delivering lectures, Uren doesn't do much but give out the same assignments each year and create variations of the same test. Honestly, my least favorite prof ever, the effort he puts in is minimal and it's disappointing. Good TAs though!

I dont know where this man gets his exams from. All the courses he supervises are the worst, most poorly taught and managed courses offered at western. His exams are very brutal and he never curves. Horrible

It's been three years since I took Calc1000/AM1201, and this man still haunts me.

Bad prof terrible exam

The Calc 1000 final was HORRIBLE. I swear to God he made up his own theories. Genuinely think I got a 10%. He sets his students up for failure with difficult assignments that should be grade boosters. This man seems to forget we're still first years adjusting to university exams. I hope I never have him ever again. NEVER TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!

The course overall had many inconsistencies in grading and was just a mess. It was like the professors teaching the course had no idea what content was on the exam.

Calculus 1000 was and still is the worst and hardest class I took in undergrad. The exams will obliterate you no matter how many hours you put in. James Uren is my #1 enemy and made my life a living hell. He single-handedly started the sassy man apocalypse. Unreal levels of attitude from him. This class will haunt me for the rest of my life!

Uren was very rude and stand-off-ish. I was trying to explain the difficulties I had with taking the weekly quizzes online, he accused me of cheating and trying to get out of the taking the quiz. Would not recommend him as a professor. The year I took it, almost everybody failed the first test and the students were blamed.

rate my prof should make a RateMyProf uncensored version and you would get more accurate ratings on this guy. btec santa seems like a sociopath who gets his power trip failing students. he teaches well, but hes a weird guy in the way he communicates with you.
