he is good and nice just goes a bit fast . must know everything, details details details you need to take time with this so be prepared
Survey of Human Disease. Not easy, but very interesting. He goes over information quickly so you need to take time to study for his detailed tests. He is fair. Teacher is a walking encyclopedia.
Survey of Human Diseases is a great class and my favorite at USF. Dr. Van Elswyk is an EXCELLENT instructor and is willing to help his students. The material is difficult but very interesting. Survey has 4 tests, 4 quizzes, and a final. I HIGHLY recommend taking this course with Van Elswyk but be prepared to study hard for a good grade.
V.Good class, but be prepared to work V.HARD. Exams aren't short, 60 questions MCQ and TRUE/FALSE, usually covering no less than 5 chapters, sometimes more. And they are worth 60% of your grade. Quizzes are 10 T/F, but only 20% of your grade. The 150 Question Final is worth 20%. There's a curve but it's not much (10-15%). You WILL use the textbook!
Dr. Van Elswyk is one of those professors that truly cares about his students. He wants them to do well, but be prepared to study for those exams! They are not hard once you put in the time. Great class, and great professor!!
On of the best classes that you might take. just be ready for the test. study hard, really hard and you will be fine.
Medical terminology is the best class i've ever taken. The class is easy, but you really have to study for the final. I crammed with a group of people for two nights before it and we all got A's. If you are planning to do anything in the health field, take this class!
I never got to know him b/c MEDTerm is an Online class. The class is easy, it one of those class where you work at your own pace. The online stuff is 60% and the final is 40%. WARNING: TAKE THE FINAL SERIOUSLY, 60% of the classes get a B because they dont study for the final
This course was much more difficult than necessary. I am a straight A student and I withdrew because I was barely pulling a C. Be prepared to work very hard.
Online class. extremely easy if you do the work. The online interactive book is kind of repetitive and still costs 100$ even though its virtual. MUST study for the exam. If you get a 75+ you earn an A in the class!
As long as you study for the final, you should get an A. The class is online at your own pace. I would recommend this class to anyone who is pre-med or any health science.
This was an online class, so you can work at your own pace. The final is extremely important- study the prefixes suffixes and core words. You only need a 75 on the final to pass the class with an A. To do the online part of the class you listen to (or click through)all the slides.
easy class. learned more than i thought i would. dont wait till the last minute to do your work, its dull and a pain. work at your own pace. study word parts and the quizzes for the final and you should get an A
Med Term is a useful class for anyone who ever plans to be alive. It's very easy & I finished abt 80% of it in an afternoon/evening. The hardest part is the 1000 flash cards where you have to type the exact definition listed, which disappers when you start typing. Copy paste does not work either. The final is 200 q's, 115 of which are word parts
Really nice doctor, keeps your interest in medicine alive. Notes and tests are straightforward and consistency in the class. Takes a long time to answer e-mails and sometimes makes mistakes on the tests but he will eventually fix it if you argue it. I would definitely recommend to ALL Pre-med majors!
You are FORCED to get all 60% of your course grade as you must complete everything in the online book correctly in order to take the in-class final. Study the flash cards and the quizzes for the final. Take a week before the final to start studying. All you need is to answer 150/200 questions on the final to get an A. Easy IF YOU STUDY!
Online class, dont really need the teacher, study for final if you are really good at prefix/suffixes you should do fine since most of the test is prefix/suffixes and if you know those definations you should do good on key words part overall easy A in my opinion
Everyone pretty much gets either an A or a B. No one gets lower than that. BUT.... it's really hard to get an A. I'd recommend oceanography or something.
Study two weeks before the final and you'll get the A (i got an A), its NOT hard its 200 questions, 115 T/F 85 quiz questions. First 115 come directly from notecards, other 85 from quizzes. If you're looking for an easy online A, here it is. you dont need to be super smart to get an A either.
easy A, study everything 2 weeks before the final, guaranteed A. you do not need to be super smart for this course, but make sure you study everything. final is composed mostly of note cards.
AWESOME TEACHER! MED TERM AND DISEASE ARE MADE INTO THE EASIEST CLASSES IVE EVER TAKEN BECAUSE OF THIS TEACHER! THE TESTS ARE NOT HARD, NO REASON TO STUDY!
This class could be a little more challenging.
This class stressed me out a lot for no reason! I made 1000 notecards on all the prefixes and memorized and aced the test. It is not difficult at all. This class can be taken with hard classes because it is really easy. I got an A and so did over half the class. Not hard. The teacher is kinda short in emails but overall pretty helpful.
Should be easy BUT I took in-class lecture and wasted money on a book not needed for the tests-it's all from the supplementary PPTs and your lecture notes (basically whatever in his head). Lazy professor, does not provide review, nor indicate important points for tests. Try online class if you can it probably is a stupidly easy A.
Good teacher. Took Survey of Human Disease with him. This was in 2006, though, when Survey was one of the hardest courses in the University. Was difficult but extremely well presented and allowed for mastery of material.
This is an online class. All you have to do is click through slides online and take tests that you have to keep doing until you get 100%. The only hard part is the final which is mostly from the chapter tests. Very easy A if you study for the final!
He is amazing. The material is easy, if you dont get it then your simply dumb. He does not give reviews or studyguides but then again we are no longer in high school. His testes are easy just study his powerpoints. You must take his class!!
Made an interesting class boring. He is lazy and reads directly from the slides (that he did not make). I took this class as an elective because it seemed interesting, it isn't, he does not care, syllabus was outdated. Waste of a class.
What an awful teacher. Not only does he read from slides that he did not make up, but he adds his own anecdotes on meaningless things that you will be tested on. As an A student, I got a B. This is my first B at the university after studying for three years as a microbiology major. Do not take this class in person, take it online.
You need to attend every lecture since he gives out info that will be on the exams. There are 6-7 exams and 1 paper and 1 short online assignment. If you want an A, ATTEND ALL LECTURES AND READ THE SLIDES, he uses the book too so you will need it.
Online class, you can do everything at your own pace. The exam had 200 questions, you can get an easy B if you don't study. There is A LOT of information, you will need to memorize around 1000 words.
Memorize the flashcards, memorize the quizzes, and you'll get an A on the final
Didn't have too much interaction with him. The course was fairly easy. Study all of the flash cards and chapter tests and you should be fine. I finished the course within a month and waited until the week before to study. I wish I had done the course later so the information was easier to retain. But it isn't difficult! Definitely recommend.
Medterm. Took it online. Print the tests, prefixes, and suffixes. Memorize as much as you can and you will get an A. Good class to take if you're pre-health like me.
He is horrendous, the man is a lazy professor. He shows up to class late, and reads off of power points slides. He doesn't even make up his own exams. This material is so interesting but he doesn't care. He doesn't care about his students, he doesn't care about his class, and it is sad. AVOID HIM. RUN AWAY. WASTE of my time and money.
All he tells you to study are all your notes, powerpoints and everything in the book. If he cared at all he would teach the material not read it. He's there for easy money nothing else. I wouldn't advise anyone to take him.
He is a walking dictionary! He knows his stuff. reminds me of Tim Gunn from project runway. PH is starting to moderately diffcult. show up to class read textbook. i suggest getting a voice recorder- that way you can keep up with him!
If you need somewhere to take a nap twice a week head on down to the public health building and attend his lectures. he will read the slides as a good night story and then expect you to memorize them so you can pick "which answer is incorrect" on his whole exam. save yourself the time and take survey online. youll thank me later
He was arrogant and rude. His tests were awful.
I'm going to be honest, his tests are very hard and you NEED to pass his tests in order to pass the class. No exceptions! He gives no study guides and he will tell you that up front. Textbook was barely used, just study lecture notes. Prepare yourself! This teacher is tough.
You definitely need to study, it's a lot of information and the final is cumulative. Super easy research paper, only 1000 words and if you follow the rubric closely you'll get an A. He is very knowledgeable and helpful, if you go into his office he'll let you look over your test and give you tips on studying/note taking.
Worst class in a while. The exams did not seem to come from the notes or book. I studied and read all the chapters and still did not do well on the exams. I actually ended up withdrawing from the class because it was too stressful and too hard. I wish I would have taken it online!!! He rambles in class and expects everyone to know everything.
Like a grad program class, goes over ppts & tells you whats not on tests. Brings up stories about his practice or when he was an intern. 5 exams, comp. final, 1000 word paper. Very vague about the paper, emailed him about 10 times with quick responses (not weekends) and no attitude. Study after every class and don’t get behind. Good sense of humor.
This would be a interesting course if it were taught by anybody but him. You have to do A LOT of studying and even then that won't insure you a good grade. There are 5 tests, 1 paper, and 1 online assignment. Good luck if you decide to take him.
Although the class is challenging, he is a great professor. It really helps to go to class and take notes on the lectures. There is a lot of info for this course so be prepared to study but it is very possible to do well. He is very helpful and fair with grading. Great professor.
I took the whole class in 3 days and got an A. enough said
Be ready to study. Doesnt even hint whats on exams, just random slides not to study (5 out of about 50 slides per chapter) Expects you to retain 4-5 chapters of information for a 60 question exam. Exam questions are EXTREMELY minute. As a bio major, this is by far the hardest course ive taken (with this prof) and ive taken classes such as org chem
Challenging class! Study, study and more study if you want to pass those tests! There is an easy paper and web search to boost the overall grade.
Challenging class! Study, study and more study if you want to pass those tests!
For the love God, please take this course online if you can!! It is soooooo much easier than what this professor makes it to be in class!! Online easy A, otherwise u must study like crazy and know everything inside and out!! I dedicated hours to this course and only got a B. Professor is really nice and has a lot of knowledge, but avoid if you can
online work at your own pace, lectures are not his, a Dr. Siegfried Fagerberg. Sometimes hard to follow the lectures don't flow together. Just have to work through all the modules, 1000 fill in the blank flash cards and final exam. Lots of information to memorize.
He is a very interesting man, always telling stories about when he was still in practice or about his personal life. Didn't interact much with him personally. He really knows his stuff, but the class itself is extremely hard unless you spend most of your time studying for it, which I did not. Take the course online if possible, save yourself!
This is a very interesting class, and the professor is knowledgeable, but it is very challenging. He covers 22 chapters over the course, you have 5 quizzes, 5 exams and 1 cumulative final(there are other small assignments.)I recommend attending class because he tells you what is important for the exam.I also recommend taking online.
For his online Medical Terminology class there is literally ONE grade for the whole class and it''s the end of semester exam. If you fail your screwed.
Everything is done online. The class is very easy and is taken at your own pace but don't wait til the last minute to start the work. Everything is pretty dependent upon the final exam which is easy IF YOU STUDY and take it seriously.
Very interesting class and Dr. Van Elswyk really knows his stuff. He relates a lot of the material to things he experienced in practice. Go to class because he tells you whats important and what you can skip over studying and really clarifies the material. Overall would recommend, there's a lot of material to go over, read and go to class
I took Professor Van Elswyk's medical terminology course online. I never spoke to him or received any feedback from him. The course was very straight forward. View presentations, make flashcards, and take exams. The only grade that actually matters is the final. Super easy class, guaranteed A. Don't have much to say about the Professor himself.
Medical Terminology was the easiest class I've ever taken online at USF. I finished the class during the first week of the semester with an A+. The final exam is worth 100% of your final grade, so you can easily blow through the lectures and assignments to unlock the final exam. The average final grade for my class was an 89!
Ignores challenging questions or questions that are irrelevant to his experience. Some of his lecture materials were incorrect. Some how because of his OBGYN experience every test managed to have questions related to that subject. He is a professor who gives grades he deems acceptable and is proud of it.
This is tough class, but it is a GREAT class! The tests are tough, even though they are all MC/TF. He really knows what he's talking about and has worked in the field for many years. Arguably one of the most beneficial classes you could take if you are considering going medical. It may benefit you to take anatomy before taking this class, though.
Will not provide exceptions to whats on his syllabus. Even if it determines whether you pass or fail.
Professor Elswyk is a great teacher, however, the class is difficult. I would definitely prefer him over the other professors. We had other professors guest lecture our class and they were slow and difficult. His classes go by quick. Get the required text and READ! Start reading a week or two before test & you will pass. Pop quizzes and annoying
Medical Terminology was the easiest class ive taken yet. I took it online and there is only one grade: the final exam. The exam is 200 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours. The questions are straight-forward. I barely studied the course material and got a 97% on exam. 90 above is an A.
Dr. Van Elswyk is a great professor. He's genuine and truly wants you to succeed but you have to put in the work. Never got the textbook just follow review guides and study lecture slides, I got an A. Great class you will learn so much more than other professors because he was an OBGYN for 20 yrs. He tells interesting stories and engages students.
Great teacher who knows what he's talking about. I hardly used my book. He makes you follow him on Twitter to read articles, and exams contain questions about those articles. 6 exams and 1 final7 exams. Tests about every 2 weeks. 1 paper. 5 pop quizzes. 1 dropped test and dropped quiz.
His lectures arent boring, he's always giving examples and telling stories from when he was practicing which makes you very interested. His tests are a bit hard, but really all you need is the lecture and power points. I asked him what to study he said just focus on those two. So make sure you study study study those pp's and you should be good.
He is a great professor but the class is very difficult. I recommend using his office hours to go over past exams and discuss what ways here recommends you study!!
for survey of human diseases- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS it is very difficult, exam every other week. he is a great teacher but not a class i would recommend ever
Professor Van Elswyk makes the class fairly easy. I have had an A all semester and I have barely studied. There are in class quizzes to try to get you to class, six exams, and a research paper. The paper is more about format than content. Pay attention in class and you are guaranteed between an A and B.
Professor Van Elswyk is an excellent communicator of course content. I completed all of the required sections in the online textbook, and was graded entirely by one final exam. There is a lot of repetition throughout the course which helps with reinforcement. Practice tests and flashcards in the online textbook helped me prepare for the exam.
There are pop quizzes. He is an amazing professor and is very passionate in this subject, however there are a lot of exams, some every other week and the material can be a lot to study. If you study ahead of time, and do the study guide early on there should not be a problem. Exams do have a lot of T/F questions so beware. No +/- scale
The tests are straight from the lecture. Go to lecture, take notes and study and you'll be fine.
took medical terminology online. SO EASY. just race thru the lectures & study the flashcards for the final exam. good class if you're looking for something quick & easy to finish.
Worst professor I have ever had. You can memorize slides and study every day but it doesn't matter. He doesn't care about you or your grade, his tests are designed to fail students and trip you up, with unclear T/F questions and choosing the correct answer out of complex options. His tests include 75% of info from ppts, and 25% from his head.
Very knowledgeable man but he uses pre-made lectures that are only 50% relative to the material that you actually need to know. He will rush through slides that you need to know and spend time on ones that are not on the exam - of which you have one every other week, and a pop quiz in between. There is 1 paper on a disease of your choice.
Use the final exam study guide for test preparation. This is the key to passing the class. Otherwise you are studying material for 4-5 chapters and a test with only 50 questions. He reads right off of the powerpoint slides and adds in his experiences as an OBGYN. Nice guy. Record his lectures and listen to them for test preparation.
Professor Elswyk is very knowledgeable due to his past of being a surgeon and OBGYN. He doesn't take attendance, but he does have pop quizzes and gives specific information that isn't on the PP slides. If you don't participate in class and pay attention 100% of the time, he won't be leniate with your grade. 6 exams, 1 final, 5 quizzes, & 1 paper.
Professor Van Elswyk relates a lot of his back round experience as a doctor to the class which is both interesting and helpful. If you are going into the healthcare field this may be one of the most relative classes to take. His test are difficult but do able. If you study hard you will get and A and learn. Test are about every other week on 3-4 ch
Amazing professor. He is obviously very knowledgable and passionate about teaching. This class was extremely hard. You have to put in a lot of time studying to pass his pop quizzes and his exams. They are made to trick you with half of the exam being true/false. Attendance is necessary to figure out which information is important for the exams
Telling the material is not the same as teaching. Dr. Van Elswyk does the former. Study hard and you'll be ok.
I am not the biggest fan of this professor. I have experienced a side to him that made me feel that he is "superior" or arrogant and only cares about himself. His class is not "hard" it is just A LOT of studying because its definition based. He does teach off the slides but tends to let you know things you need to know/don't need to know.
I took this class online and though it was difficult, I learned a lot. I suggest taking the class by itself if you can because it does require a lot of studying time if you want to do well. He makes it very clear what he expects and even though he may seem too strict, he is there to help his students. If you want to do well read the textbook!
This class was tough. There's a lot of information that's thrown at you, but as long as you give yourself an adequate amount of time to study all of the slides from the powerpoints and notes from class you should do well. The only grades in this class are quizzes, exams, and one paper. Definitely make sure to go to class and study.
His class was fairly easy if you have the notes which he only shares in class. I recommend taking pictures of the slides because he moves through them quickly. There was one paper and if you follow the rubric he is a very easy grader. His tests aren't very hard but everything is online so make sure you don't miss an assignment
The only grade you have in the class is the final exam which you can complete anytime throughout the semester. you're very limited on time you have 2 hours to answer 200 multiple choice questions. wasn't very hard, the exam is online not procured
This class is a joke! His lectures include his own slides that he doesn't share and then his tests are based on material in the book that isn't covered in class and conversations in class. He shows up late every day, if he shows up. A lot of classes were canceled last minute. If you aren't familiar with anything medically then plan to study a LOT!
The grading scale is ridiculous (only based on one exam). There is no "+/-" system, so if you end up with an 89.5%, it would be a B (same as someone who got an 80%)! Doesn't care about students (replied to my e-mail in few words).
Make sure you read every chapter and pay close attention to his slides that he makes. If you do this, you will pass no doubt. Easy 100 on the paper if you follow the rubric exactly.
Finished the class in three days; the final exam is 100% of your entire grade but it isn't too difficult. You have to buy the online book to do the lecture and final exam.
Lectures start late and end early. If you're anything like me and did not have a decent understanding of the human body prior to taking this class, I would recommend waiting because he does not really teach you well. Tests can be done at home, but I averaged a C on each one. I recommend the online textbook and a lot of google to help pass his class
This should be a pre-med only class. You have a mid term and final exam only and if you underestimate the mid term you will never do well enough on the final to pass unless you have a strong medical background. Professor is hands off, listen to the lectures and study every day. Do not count on the practice test questions to be on the graded tests!
For this online course you have buy a program for and additional $100. There are only two test, each worth 50% of your grade and lectures for each chapter. The test are extremely hard. Seriously do not take him.
He isnt welcoming, Ive never encountered a professor that didnt care about their students. He makes you purchase his $100 book to take self tests that arent graded, and they consist of 62-180 questions each. Stay away.
This was by far one of the hardest professors Ive ever had. The course was online and your grade was 50% the midterm and 50% the final. I was lucky enough to finish with an A after endless hours of studying and memorization. He wrote the material himself, errors and all. Does not care about students in the slightest. Sadly this is a req PH class.
I took his class in the summer online and my final grade was a 68% and he refused to do extra credit or even work with students . Like I was two points away from a C now I have to take class over again and I was supposed to be done with school in the fall. But nope I have to stay one more semester alllll bc I failed by TWO POINTS !!!!
I took this class in person. He goes through the slides very quickly so I found myself going home and making notes myself from the online book. The tests cover a lot of material but if you study you'll be fine. There is one paper and 5 pop quizzes. Make sure you go to class because the pop quizzes really affect your grade!
His online class is not beneficial at all. Its basically a robot talking to you, all the answers are online and you don't learn anything. the book is 200$ for half a semester and it's required to take the course. I had an 88 and he refused to round up the grade whatsoever. He's super rude when replying to students and gives no real feedback.
Asks extremely difficult medical questions on tests that were never covered in lectures nor text. He acts like we 're in Medical School. Does not seem to care about the students. Too bad this is a requirement. Wish they had a better professor. May bring GPAs down drastically. Do not take him if you can help it. He is intimidating.
I don't know why there's complaints about him. Buy the textbook: tests are basically straight from it. MyHealthLab/lecture content supplements anything the book doesn't cover. Pay attention to assignment due dates. Classes are short, but still show up because there's pop quizzes. Willing to explain any subject. Interesting overview of diseases.
Class lectures were beyond pointless. The only reason to go was for the 5 pop quizzes he gave in class, which could severely hurt your grade if you do poorly on them. Exams were essentially straight out of the book and lectures did not prepare you for them at all. He flew through lectures and doesn't use a mic so its hard to keep up. Google is key.
I took this class over the summer online, and its pretty tough. You must be very dedicated to taking notes and not get behind. If you forget to take a Chapter Post Test, he wont allow you to retake it, learned that the hard way; he is not lenient. Basically, dont take this class if you want an easy A, study lots, and dont slack off.
only took this class because it was online, other prof in-person. do not make that mistake. he isn't very considerate, his tests come straight from book + modules, so BE SURE TO BUY THE BOOK! Pro tip: buy the pearson course WITHOUT the textbook, buy a PDF online. pearson is garbage and doesn't let you search the book by control F. chs are LONG.
Im halfway through the course so far. I thought I could handle it by reading the text book and ignoring the reviews, thats a lie. This class an elective for me and Im probably not getting an A. Lectures are useless. 6 exams and a final, a paper, 6 pop quizzes and 14 chapter quizzes. Avoid if you can.
I am a straight-A student and this is the most difficult class ever. I have taken AP1 and AP2 and they weren't this bad. He makes the questions very tricky. My grade was an 84 and dropped to a 74 because I missed an APA formating quiz. He would not let me retake or offer extra credit. Very inconsiderate and rude. Worst professor in COPH building.
I read the reviews and believed that if I just read the book and study my notes I will do good That is a lie I worked so hard for this class that it would give me anxiety just thinking about it i had a 4.0 GPA and this class has ruined it. 6 exams and a final. 5 Pop quizzes, poorly worded, and a paper which wasnt bad and LOTS of homework DONT TAKE
TAKE ONLINE!! Class is cakewalk online don't take in person. The class self-paced online and if you do the assignments (Flashcards, SELF TEST, lectures) YOU WILL GET AN A. If not go back to get a degree in underwater basket-weaving you should not be in health science. There is no reason not to get an A in this class. Finished class in 4 weeks.
If you're taking medical terminology, take it online with this professor. You can finish this class whenever you want and it is an easy A.
Easy A if you take online. You get to go through the entire class at your own pace. I was able to finish the class in a few weeks. It is a nice class to fill your schedule and doesn't require a ton of work.
This professor is abysmal. The whole class is accessible but you must finish everything before hand to get to the next section. I had an A through out the entire course and when trying to get to my final had an IT issue. IT was not available for final exam and the Professor nor assistant were willing to help. He failed an A student because of ego.
very simple course. it will be an easy A if you pay attention to the "self-test" questions since they will get asked again on the graded quizzes, midterm, and final (none of the exam questions will surprise you). you can complete this course in less than a week if you just put in some effort.
Took online during winter. At your own pace. Midterm 30% and final 40% of final grade. Only other grade is chapter tests. Test questions come straight from the self tests you have to take and get all questions right before taking the test anyway. Can be done in literally 2 days. Easy A. No +/- scale. A is 93 and up. Finished with a 98.
The final exam is 40% of your grade. 200 quesetions, two-hour limit. The midterm is 30% of your grade. Rest of 30% is the chapter quizzes. I finished this class in 6 hours in one day. It was hard word, but worth to finish it in a day. All in all, I got a 100% in the class.
So, this class is an easy online class and elective for students at USF. You can easily pass the class by taking the practice tests before exams. The class has no due dates except for the final. However, the professor's involvement was very minimal and not very helpful. Granted, you don't really need them to do well in the class.
Went into this class hearing it was one of the worst classes, definitely not. As long as you pay attention and read youll do fine. Exams were proctored, but not difficult if youve read the materials.
I really liked this class. The course material was tough but it was very interesting as someone who wants to go into a medical field of some sort. It wasnt necessarily easy but you will learn a lot and he is a very accommodating professor.
I took this class online over the summer. Some people say you can finish in a week but I am not a medical/nursing student and I wanted to take my time going through the lectures. The professor himself literally does nothing. He sent out like two announcements but all the homework is on Caduceus and then inputted into canvas. Pretty easy.
Med terminology was so easy. His course didn't have proctorio and you could do everything within a week. There are a lot of assignments, but they don't take up too much time. Pace yourself accordingly, and the course will be super easy.
Tough grader, would not recommend taking his medical terminology class over the summer.
Literally told a student to take notes during POST TESTS because he wouldnt open them for reviewing before test dates. Kind of inconsiderate and barely even lectures himself.
Before this class, I had a 3.9 GPA, and after this class now I have a 3.0 the test does not have any questions from lectures. The grade is the tests. I hated this class, the only and first D I have in my entire bachelor's degree. I am a senior. Not easy class.
I took Dr. Van Elswyk's class online because of COVID and he still managed to be a wonderful professor regardless of the many changes he had to go through. His lectures were very important for the tests- he highlights key details that will be mentioned in the test.
Textbook is expensive and extremely dense. Lecture videos are next to worthless. Tests are a nightmare of "gotcha" questions instead of actually testing your knowledge on the material. Sometimes it feels like questions are asked that weren't covered in any of the material. Tests cant even be reviewed afterwards. Avoid like the plague.
I took him for medical terminology. The entire class is self paced, you do the lectures and quizzes provided by the textbook. There was sooo much information that it was nearly impossible to learn it all. Every single quiz and exam (including midterm & final) are online, so you CAN pass with an A, but you won't learn much.
Easiest online class and now is worth 3 credits. An ideal filler. Knock it out in one day bc self paced. Midterm and Final aren't bad at all due to the plethora of resources available outside of the class.
Easiest class you will ever take in your life. You can easily get the class done within a week or so. That being said, you are only graded on a few things, so make sure you do well! Professor sends out multiple reminders to get your exams turned in before the deadline.
He's not understanding at all. Let's hope that no one in your family ends up in the hospital the day of the exam because DOCTOR Elswyk is condescending and will imply that they were overdramatic/shouldn't have gone. Even during a global pandemic! It's no excuse for you to miss an exam, because his class should be top priority, even over loved ones!
Self-paced. This class can easily be done within a week. Easy A!
The textbook is expensive and mandatory in order to complete the quizzes. Other than that, easy A since it is also self-paced.
This class is honestly total B.S To get an A in the class you need a 93, 92,91,90 is considered a B which makes no sense at all. The final exam is 200 questions and isn't a lot of time. He's very rude as well Sent a respectful email to him and he was extremely ignorant. I Would try and find another med term teacher if I were you
Straightforward, it is a lot of information though, but otherwise, not a good or bad class in my opinion, if you want to learn you will
I never actually met the teacher himself, but the course online was super easy as long as you get it done. I took medical terminology with him as the teacher and it was completely self paced and the easiest college course I have ever taken.
The class itself is very straightforward with lectures and practice tests. The prof isnt actually teaching the course as its completely through an asynchronous 3rd party software thats mandatory to buy. The few times that the prof posted on Canvas he seemed unforgiving to situations that may warrant deadline extensions.
I took this class online - was the easiest class I have ever taken. He doesnt really teach himself, its the text book online that does but it gives you all the information you need for the exams which take up the majority of the grade. I could have probably finished this class in a week. Take it online.
Its pretty easy, just a loooooooot of lectures
This class is very fun to learn, you learn a lot. However, the test is a lot and its every 2 weeks. The test contains about 3 chapters and there is a lot of information to know. The lectures are recorded. Do not take this class if you are lazy. you have to work hard for a decent grade. The test are ehh unless you study. take another class
I havent met Dr. van Elswyk so I cant attest to his personality but this class was baptism by fire. I was premed up until this semester but apparently I hadnt learned anything. This is med school level stuff. Read. EVERY. Sentence. He gives trick questions.
If you want to get an A, do not take this class. Centered around the tests and they are EXTREMELY specific questions! It's bad enough that to get an A you need a 93% in the class. As prepared as you think you are, you aren't because even on the test there will be information that can't be found in the lectures or the textbook. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE!
Hes not the worst, but definitely not the best. His tests are difficult. Dont bother studying off of the lecture just read the book. I would not have taken him if I knew what I know now honestly. Try finding a better professor, if not hell do just make sure to put in extra work because this class is not an easy A.
He was an overall good professor, his lectures are recordings of past lectures and he gives the same exam for in class and online students. That sucks because sometimes he'll say something in person that will be on the exam and online students will miss it. I recommend studying only his study guides and the power points. Don't waste time in book
A's are 93-100, which is my biggest complaint. Took this online & had a lot of lectures but it was self paced. I put this class on the back burner when I had busier weeks. If you aren't good with time management I don't recommend a self paced class. Minimal effort for an A. didn't have much interaction with the professor at all,
Took the winter intermission. Class is self-paced and all the materials are found in the online textbook. He was good at sending out reminders and etc. The class in general isn't bad; just a lot of memorization. If you skip over the lectures, memorize the flashcards /self-tests, and prioritize your time you'll be set.
This class isn't as bad as people make it out to seem. Just be ready to study about a week before the tests.
I have taken two classes with Dr. Van Elswyk now: Medical Terminology and Survey of Human Diseases. Survey was in person and was much more difficult content-wise. He gave concise lectures and posted the slides on canvas. I liked that he was utilizing his experience as a physician to teach, rather than a typical instructor approach.
to get an A you need a 93, no extra credit, no rounding up, and everything is proctored. if you want an A in this class be ready to study HARD
As someone with prior healthcare experience, I personally didn't find this class to be very difficult, but there is a lot of content so you will need to dedicate some time to study it. Dr. Elswyk keeps his lectures concise and they are easy to follow. Make sure you read the textbook and the supplemental articles as well and you should be fine.
Best class ever! Easy A, literally waited til the last possible minute to even start the class 5 days before the deadline , and finished the class in 5 days with an A. Focus on flash cards and self tests, its mostly busy work and the rest isnt hard to memorize for exams.
Van Elswyk is a great prof, you can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching. The class is not easy, there's a lot of content. However, his tests are not tricky, they come straight from his lectures and slides. So he prepares you well fth Overall, I believe the class was very interesting and relevant.
Asynchronous course. 10/10 recommend.
The class is so easy. Mainly focus on the self tests and word fracturing, since it'll help understanding the vocabulary. The lectures aren't too bad, they seem like a lot but the content is straightforward and easy. Great class to take during winter break. Easy A.
I loved taking med terms! VERY EASY I finished the entire course in less than a week and learned a lot. I highly recommend if you are majoring in anything healthcare related as the terms learned in this course helped me do better in my nursing pre-requisites. Dr. Van Elswyk is also very accessible and helpful.
I've never actually interacted with the professor, but the class itself was very simple. Lots of memorization, grading only on proctored exams. While proctored, every question is in his reading material, so the exams are very passable if you put in the time to memorize the terms. I'd recommend it!
Class was self-taught and super easy to manage. I took the class during the winter-session and finished all the content in a week. The class really just relied on memorization.
My favorite professor. Very knowledgable of the information he's teaching. It isn't an easy course but he makes it more interesting in my opinion. Has an MD and uses his experience as a physician to explain ideas and concepts. So good I took his medterm class as well.
Easy class, finished in 2 days, took the final on the third day. Professor not attributed to the course, no contact w/ him, nor does he grade anything, since everything is automatically graded by canvas. Great course to take for upper level elective (3000+), highly recommend.
The course is completely self-taught and self-paced with a due date for the exams at the end of the semester. There is little to no interaction with other students or the professor. Exams make up the majority of the course's grade with there being two 100-question exams and a 200-question final.
Professor Elswyk is very hands-off when it comes to this course, it is mainly up to you to teach the material to yourself. That may sound daunting, it really isn't as the two midterms and final all include questions found in chapter quizzes. As long as you memorize the questions from those quizzes the tests aren't terrible. Easy and worthwhile clas
I took this class for the summer, before you take this class please know that an A is 93-100. I got a 91.64, therefore I have a B. The professor doesn't offer extra credit, retakes or make-ups so there is no way I can raise my grade the 1.36 percent needed for an A. Take the self-tests as much as you can. Overall good class.
Post-tests are due each week and six exams in total. This professor is not forgiving in any way so make sure you're on top of every due date. The information is tough and a lot but if you focus on the slides and lectures inside of textbook, you will be fine. The tests were direct with the lecture slides, study guides didn't help much.
Did really like his teaching style. the class was hard and he didn't really explain anything well in his lectures. His lecture videos were really fast and basically you would only pick up a few things and the exam questions are really specific.
14 quizzes, 2 proctored exams and a final. Study all the flashcards and self tests + understand what you are reading and you will be all set. You will have advantage if your work in a clinical setting. Everything is at your own pace. Great class to manage with difficult sciences.
Very passionate about what he teaches, and very friendly. Presents information in a clear and direct manner, Easy to communicate with and responds to CANVAS messages quickly. He is always open to meeting outside of classes; I personally met with him after all 6 of my exams to go over missed questions. Definitely deserves a 5/5 rating.
very easy online class, would highly recommend
I would not recommend this class, he makes you pay for this unnecessary program, & that is basically where everything comes from. Your quizzes and exams are related to the program. The program has so many videos that go rapidly fast, the professor does not respond to emails on time, & the professor also doesn't teach the class. He's like a ghost.
Not much help
Easy class to take while taking other difficult courses. Class is managed at your own pace and self taught. I finished the course in less than a week. Would definitely recommend taking Med Terminology w Dr. Elswyk. Easy to communicate with and responds in canvas quickly. Assignments include 14 quizzes, 2 proctored exams and a final
signed up for this class for the spring semester, but it started during winter break. the material is easy but its very time consuming. there are these flashcards you have to create that are annoying and very specific.
took this online in fall '23. all assignments are through an online textbook. the end of ch. quizzes aren't proctored only the exams. as long as you do the practice tests youll do good on the exams. nothing is due until the last month so you can work at your own pace
Didn't talk to the professor once. you pay like $150 and get access to a bunch of long videos and stupid flash cards where you have to type the word perfectly like 100 times. then after that you have 3 proctored with camera exams that are you main grade. majority of people just waited till last minute and did everything. overall just a fill class.
You go at your own pace for this class which can make you fall behind so stay on top of it. A 92% in this class is a B which is ridiculous he does not round even if you are at .98. The exams are about 100 questions each and the final is 200. There are flashcards, quizzes, and exams.
Online, so not much interaction with the professor (not one word). The course is consistent entirely on the textbook, and RELIABLE study guides can be created by the SELF TESTS and QUIZZES. Get good grades on the proctored tests, and try your best on the unproctored quizzes. Lots of studying (word for word), but otherwise not much busy work.
What can I say? This man is consistent in all his classes in how he gives his tests. 100 ?s for 1hr., final 200 ?s for 2hr. You dont have time to blink. Self paced class, took it for Maymester with 2 other classes so i may have some gray hairs. He doesnt interact with the class and good luck asking him anything. And an A is 93 smh, so I have a B.
Professor didnt say a single thing to us or teach us an ounce of material, its all from this $150 online program.
100% online and self paced, graded on 3 exams and the self tests at end of lectures. zero interaction with professor, class is completely on an overpriced online program. exams are memorization of all the self test answers and uses honorlock. can be very time consuming, good luck getting an A since cutoff is 93% and no rounding up or extra credit.
Finished class in 3 days, purely memorization. Tests mimic practice tests from textbook. Hands off professor, only have 3 proctored exams and non proctored quizzes you are graded on. Memorize, Memorize, Memorize!! and you'll be fine. Tests are 100 questions each and final is 200.
Terrible class format. Designed to be frustrating and difficult. You are required to go through ~500 questions and memorize all of them to take the proctored exams. No room for a single mistake. Exams also include questions that come from nowhere. Don't take this class expecting an A. Pretty much impossible. AVOID.
The class is self-paced, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Definitely use unstuck ai or other study tools to stay on top of the material. Exams are tough but manageable if you put in the work.
i really enjoyed this class. it is self paced so as long as you are on top of it you will be fine. i actually learned the material and i got As on everything so if you don't learn it or pay attention to the material you wont do good because its on honorlock. i honestly really liked him.
Payed for an overpriced online program, about 14 chapters each have lectures, flashcards, hear and says, self tests, and a quiz. not too hard but you only really get graded on three exams and a article critique. no room for extra credit or any kind of extra work to help your grade. no word from him the entire semester. strictly self paced
Amazing class and super fun!! Loved it. I used the self tests and flashcards to prepare for the first 2 exams, and went through all self tests + old exams to study for the final. Quizzes are directly related to the self tests and materials learned from the course and are also super easy. The human body is one of my favorite subjects to explore.
This course makes you buy the ‘cadeceus' course which was like $150. There are 14 chapters, but only the chapter quizzes (25%), the 2 exams (20%), article critique (5%), and the final exam (worth 30%) are graded. Each chapter takes like an hour to get through. I slacked off and finished the course in 2 days (but dont be me lol). Overall easy A!
You will get an A! The course is so easy you can just click through and absorb the info especially with the follow on assignments! Tests are long with 100 questions and 200 on the final. The course is entirely self paced (nothing due until end of semester). Two exams+Final are majority of grade.
Not an easy class. Requires you to memorize 500+ terms for each proctored exam and 100 questions. Need to do rigorous studying before an exam, so you need to have very good short-term memory. Quizzes are easy, but 3 exams make up 70% of your grade so there's no room for error. You will have to work for an A.
Just take one full weekend to watch the lectures and do the assignments. Put all of the self tests in a quizlet. Took maybe 7hrs to memorize all the self test questions. Take the exams. Also, exams have a few self test questions from previous years that won't be on your self test so just study past years quizlets as well to be exposed to them.
The class is at your own pace which is nice when you think about it. You can fall behind very fast. The lectures are long and have a lot of material. The quizzes are really easy. So are the exams. Strictly memorization. Dr. Van Elswyk was bland when responding to emails as if he didn't care. Easy class ehh professor.
This is quite possibly the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. He was rude, unhelpful, and inflexible. I don't have enough characters to explain why you should never take a class with him so just take my word. P.S. You know that TikTok sound that says "I can't give you a zero so I give you a 1"? That's how I feel right now.
Terrible grading system and not at all understanding.
Has a BS grading system where anything between a 92.99-80 is a B and does not offer +/- grades and says its because the COPH doesn't offer them but I have had other instructors who have. Only 3 exams whole semester that make up all of the grade, each being 100-200 questions. Not professional at all with email responses. Would not take again.
Honestly, I feel like a lot of these comments are people who are giving more hate to the professor because of a poor grade. This entire course is self paced and you basically work with a textbook. It's great because the exams are literally the self-quizzes at the end of every unit and you can find quizlets to study online.
If you are great at memorization, then this class will be a breeze. I respect the fact that his grading scale and course rules were firm since it is a 4000-level class, just wish he could have been a little more lenient about certain aspects and easier to reach out to. 6 chapter exams and a final. No dropping exams, no curves, no make-ups.
Tedious as hell but you can get an A if you dedicate some time. I did this class in its entirety during spring break. It was very hard but its basically a free 3 credit class, just memorize the terms (will take time) and just memory dump. Exams are all online with honorlock, so you can do it at any time anywhere.
Med term is a straight forward time consuming class. It can be done in a week or over a weekend if you devote time to it. I wouldnt say I learned very much, just studied the practice tests. Good for scribing and you do learn the basics of terms. Assignments are easy points.
Anything less than a 93 is a B. You literally stress yourself out for a week and then forget everything. Online honorlocked exams count for like 75% of your grade. Around 750 questions for you to remember. He changed like 10% , of them for the final though which threw me off. Completely self paced though. DO NOT LEAVE IT FOR THE FINAL WEEK.
took this as an alt calendar class( 6 weeks) i was able to work ahead and be done with almost everything by week 3, and took the final a few days before it was due to give proper study time. not hard at all but it is a lot of stuff to go over and memorize. he was kind of hands off but if you had a question he would respond rather quick.
Honestly worse professor due to his strict grading. An A for his medical terminology class is a 93. Absolutely atrocious. Don't round and I ended up having a 92.9 in the class with many other students also reaching out to him about rounding up as well. Overall, it's an easy class with ATROCIOUS amount of memorizing to even pass the class!
The professor had done nothing to help make the course easier. 93 for an A, Nothing else matters except for the exam. Course ended at 4pm iand not 11:59 like all other professors I had so everything auto-submitted when I barely started on the final exam, which resulted me in a D. And need to purchase the book from him for over 100. Not worth it.
The class is basically just memorization. There was a lot of information covered, but it was a very straightforward class. The 3 exams that you take make up most of your grade; however, the questions on them are just a copy n paste of what's on the self-test practice. No + or - grades, no extra credit, no roundings. $140 online textbook required
Professor dropped me second day of classes. Was an online class with no meeting time, I was caught up in another issue on campus the day it was due. The syllabus quiz was due at 6 pm second day of classes, I emailed him 30 minutes after the due time explaining this, with no response he dropped me from the class.
Pretty easy if you're good with recall, quizzes and exams were multiple choice. Studied 400ish terms for each midterm and got A's, its daunting but quizlet made it easy! Self paced and he's hands off so you could honestly have it all done in the first month (DO NOT PROCRASTINATE). Keep in mind he only grades on the module quizzes and 3 exams!
This is a self-paced class. You have to do everything BEFORE the end of the semester, or everything will feel heavy because you waited so long. My main problem was that the professor would answer maybe 2-3 days later to a question. Also, he only gives a sentence answer to your email.
Med term is a self paced online class so I never really interacted with the professor. However, he is extremely strict with grading and will not round/give extensions at all. The grading scale is also a bit wacky as a 92 is a B. The class is super easy but just make sure to do well on the exams and tests as they make up a HUGE part of your grade
Anything below a 93 is a B but do not be alarmed an A is easily attainable. Course work includes lectures, flashcards, self tests, timed grades quizzes, two 100 question exams and a 200 question final. The exam questions are almost entirely the self test questions with a couple random questions that can be answered by understanding the material.
There's 6 exams & gets overwhelming. He NEVER rounds up, no EC, no grades dropped. His lectures are great, but he doesn't post videos so if u miss class ur genuinely screwed, bc his slides have nothing useful he js talks. I rec taking a&p first, bc u will need to learn how each organ looks, functions, & then understand diseases of each organ/system.
