Knows his stuff + helpful. When he previews test: PAY ATTENTION or it'll hurt u.
So Funny. His teaching ability is amazing
Remnicient of Dr. Evil : Riiiiight.... Funny funny man...
You will learn a lot in his classes but his tests are very hard.
Excellent instructor, one of best at UNC Charlotte
Really cares about students. Hard prof but u learn alot
Tests are 50%,50% so go to class! He makes it entertaining, so you won't dread coming. He's also very understanding so don't hesitate to ask for help. He's one of the best professors I've had & would definitely recommend taking him.
Great teacher. Boring at times but livens class up with his dry, sarcastic humor. Only 2 tests so go to class. Pay attention and take notes and you'll be fine.
Funny guy, definately knows his stuff, ask a question and he will answer it. Need help e-mail him, smart guy, if you love pols you'll love Walsh. daaaa word.
Great professor! Funny as hell! GO TO CLASS b/c there are only 2 tests-midterm and final.
Great professor, enjoyed this class. My only problems came from me missing class, if you go to class you should have no problem getting an A.
Agree is great prof and learned soo much. But not too easy so beware. Nice.
Great professor and sexy to boot. Very intelligent as well as very funny. Knows his stuff-seems to lecture without notes. Very fair and nice-won't humiliate you if you answer wrong in class. Study like crazy and go to all classes and you will do well.
smartest poly sci professor at uncc, very helpful and knows his stuff, very dry and sarcastic which can liven up class. if you don't go to class you'll miss out big time on crucial info
I ENJOY HIS CLASS . HE MAKE EASY NOTE AND ALL OF HIS IS BASICALLY ON THE MATERIAL FROM THE CLASS. IF YOU READ YOUR BOOK SOME AND GO TO CLASS . YOU WILL MAKE A GOOD GRADE. VERY FUNNY AND MAKE CLASS FUN
Really funny, You'll look forward to his class. Makes you understand things through everyday examples. As long as you pay attention (and go to class) and read every once and awhile you'll do fine. three tests and a final.
Great professor! Very funny. Don't need to read anything in the book (just go to class). Don't even bother buying the book.... Study notes from class and you'll do well. I would definitely take his class again.
Great professor. Makes class interesting and enjoyable! Take good notes, read most of the material in the book and study for tests and you will have an A or B easily.
He is a great prof but don't believe what others say about being easy...I bombed the exams cuz I didn't do the reading...
Walsh is great. Sarcastic but tells you in the most basic way possible if you ask for it. Makes it ten thousand times more understandable. Don't have to do the readings but definitely go to class if you dont!!!
Excellent professor! Very smart and witty. If you do what you are supposed to do, you will do well.
Very witty. If you always go to class you will do well.
My favorite poly sci professor! Even though his exams are tough he still explains the material clearly and is extremely helpful. Knows what he's talking about too. Also can be a smartass which is always a plus!
I did badly in his class b/c he is tough but he is still a good prof
I learned a lot in this class. He is a great professor but can be very sarcastic. I hope to have him again. He has four tests - the multiple choice ones come mostly from the books and the essay ones come from class. Not too hard but not easy.
GREAT professor, took for Euro Politics, great stories during class, related the material so that you could remember it easily, only a midterm and a final with an option of a political report. Not easy, but an A's not difficult if you pat attention!
This is one hard professor! Only four tests, two multiple choice and two essay. Make sure you read the book as most of the questions on tests come from there. No extra credit. Try to participate in class to help your grade. No attendance policy.
Love, love, love him! Have had him for 4 classes and while he's not easy, he's a great teacher. Definatly knows the material and manages to make boring stuff interesting most of the time. He's my favorite pols. professor.
I LOVE Dr. Walsh! He is without a doubt the beest professor I have come across. He always knows the material and makes it so interesting. Amazing sense of humor. Make sure you study and participate and you will do great with him.
Walsh is very funny, classes feel five minutes long. His lecture style makes the material so much easier. Very personable as well.
He's great. I had him for 4 classes. Ask questions during class if you get confused and he is very willing to help you after class. As a Poli Sci major, I learned the most in this field from Dr. Walsh. Know your notes from class and read the book. He is a really clear teacher. I liked him a lot.
Excellent Teacher. One of the best classes I have taken. Make sure you do the assigned readings before the class b/c he will ask for class input.
My advisor and by far my favorite teacher. This guy makes the complex, tedious field of political science very interesting. If this is your major, take as many classes with him as possible. This is the first and only prof. I have rated, as he is the only one deserving of the time. TAKE JIM WALSH
Not an easy course. Do a lot of reading so make sure you take notes on the book. Also take notes in class because thats where the short answer questions on the test come from. If you make an honest effort to do well in his class, he will help you.
Definitely take this class with Walsh--it is required and not easy but he will give extra assignments and help you get a god grade
I didnt learn anything in this class. Everything he talks about in class is briefly what is on the test. I failed all of the 3 tests but he gives you so much extra credit I ended up with a B.
LBST w/Walsh was hard but he gives you lots of material and guides to study so I did ok. Great teacher and speaker to the class really enjoyed the lectures

Can be a little hard at first if you are not a POLS major, but is still a pretty good course to take. Very funny and makes the class as interesting as possible. There is an attendance policy.
Good professor. Essay tests straight from the notes and study guide. Attendance policy, but posts notes online. Helpful and makes the class interesting
Better than any of my teachers at Chapel Hill.
Great prof. he is very helpful & notes are very clear, exams are fair & straigh fwd. A lot of reading but if u attend class daily u don't have to do it all, u can skim it. 1 grp project..if u don't have a grp then he choose it for u so make sure u choose ur grp wisely. I have already had him for 3 classes & am planning on taking more classes w/ him
Had him for many classes, great professor. Don't piss him off, go to class, take good notes, and do the readings (skim it if necessary) and you will be fine. Best professor in the dept. Very diplomatic about things, so just be honest with him and he will help you out. Take as many classes with him as possible, he knows what he is talking about.
He's one of the best in pol. sci. dept. Tests are straightforward and from his notes & lectures. He likes to crack jokes and make you feel at ease.
totally in love with him- brilliant man, great sense of humor. probably the greatest professor i've had in over 2 years of college. take his courses!!! ;)
James Walsh is probably one of the best teachers on campus. He explains everything clearly and has a very interesting way of teaching. His Politics and Film class is one of the most interesting and best classes that I have taken during my time at UNCC.
POLS.Funny funny man but class sucks...70% jokes, 30% lesson..does not go over anything in the book, lectures from brain..but bases tests on books. tests? his quote "i make the tests harder to filter out who really is not doing the work and who is doing the work." problem..no one does well on his tests he gives 25 point curves..u be the judge
He checks every class period to make sure that you are there. Follow along while Dr. W teaches! Although he explains his notes in class, there are some very important things that you will need to make note of personally. Ask (smart) questions! It will boost your grade.
Not a good professor. Spends more time on jokes than on the lecture. Tests are graded unfairly, although he gives a 20 point curve most of the time. He jokes most of the class period, then says, "oh, this is what you were supposed to have learned today" and tries to fit the lecture in in 5 minutes. Nice guy, bad professor.
I really enjoy this class. You definitely need to study and go to class, but the tests and quizzes are straightforward. He encourages a lot of discussion, which makes the class interesting. He's obviously very smart.

Great teacher, probably my favorite I've had. Tests really aren't that hard, they are long but they're pretty easy. I thought this class would be stupid but I actually liked it and it's interesting.

Walsh is a very interesting professor. Sure.. he makes a few jokes in class. But it's to keep you awake. He clearly makes his point and helps you to absorb the information. Very open-minded to comments and opinions in class. Tests are hard, with 3 short answers and 15 multiple choice, but he does curve. Very good professor for LBST.
FREAKING AMAZING! BEST PROFESSOR EVER! INTERESTING, FUNNY and ridiculously INTELLIGENT! MOST HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
great teacher w/much enthusiasism. class is tough but learn alot.
You have to take this class. Take it with Walsh. He really wants you to learn and shows you why this stuff is helpful later in college.
will you teach a wretch to live straighter than a needle
FREAKING AMAZING! BEST PROFESSOR EVER! INTERESTING, FUNNY and ridiculously INTELLIGENT! MOST HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
great teacher w/much enthusiasism. class is tough but learn alot.
Good class for senior seminar
Walsh is an a**. I have the guy for methods and I hate it. His lectures are ok, but god forbid you try to get extra help. He only teaches one class this semester but his other duties to the department make it hard to get a hold of him, which is why he passes you to his assistant, who is worthless. Don't take him if you can avoid it.
Good for political science methods class.
FREAKING AMAZING! BEST PROFESSOR EVER! INTERESTING, FUNNY and ridiculously INTELLIGENT! MOST HIGHLY RECOMEND!
Walsh is awesome. He is very sarcastic and keeps you into the lectures. He was very helpful and often answered my emails less then thirty minutes after I sent them. If you put in effort into his class you will find that he will be willing to help you.
Dr. Walsh is excellent...he makes the class fun and interesting. Take him, you won;t regret it.
Ridiculously Hard class for an 1100 level, what he lectures and what he provides on powerpoints does NOT coincide with his tests. Test questions are tricky and 3 of the answers could be correct!Definitely have to read otherwise you won't pass. I advise a different professor for this class!
HARD! DO NOT TAKE HIM. Gives you a study Guide for the final and tell you if you study it you will not great, but he is a damn lier! ONLY 1 damn question off the study guide was on there 2 at the most!!!!!
Very good class, make sure yo attend class, makes topic interesting
Walsh is funny, maybe his tests aren't as straightforward but why would you take int'l poli unless that's your major? If you can't understand his tests, reconsider how intuitive you are considering pol-sci requires intellect. He curves his exams beyond imaginable, to fail his class or receive less than a C is ridiculous... He is very entertaining.
Even if you don't go to class, just read the book. READ the book. READ THE book. READ THE BOOK. if you readthebook, you will not receive less than an A. If you don't READ THE BOOK and do poor, shut up, it's your own fault.
Lot of reading, and take good notes. If you take good notes you will make an A. I think most the people around me made a "C" or better. I made an "A" simply because my notes were better than theres when I compared them. Fun class. Class mainly consisted of quizes and that was it, take homework was just reading.
Wish I would've known about him earlier. Took his class in my last semester. It's not an easy one. Come to class, take notes, read the textbook and you should do fine. I took my own notes when I read each chapter and went to every class. He is hilarious and keeps the class interesting. Highly recommended.
good class learned a lot but is difficult
This teacher is AWESOME, went out of his way to even help me out of class with some other problems I was having, I would take him anytime.. His test are challenging but no homework, and as long as you pay attention you'll be fine.
He is really funny and keeps his lectures entertaining. His test can be a little tricky but if you study your notes and read the book you should do fine. Wanted to take him in the Spring but couldn't find a class he was teaching other than what I already took.
Intl. Politics class. Let me start by saying that when you try to ask him questions, he never responds to emails. I do my best in class, coming every day and he's a fair teacher; but I request that you do not take a teacher that doesn't respond to his students's emails when it comes to asking questions about assignments or help in general.
I'm only in my freshman year, but Jim is my favorite so far. He explains everything through a lecture class with serious topics but throws in a lot of humor. Textbook based, read the book and attend class if you want to do well in this class. He does not take attendance, but BE THERE if you want to do well. Tests are tricky but he adds curves.
I took Inter Politics. Uses textbook a lot. Papers with m/c exams. He is a hard grader on papers. Tests are tricky. He wasn't very helpful outside of class. I don't recommend him. Take someone else for this class.
I took Inter Politics. Uses textbook a little. Papers with m/c exams. He is a easy grader on papers. Tests are not tricky. He was very helpful outside of class. I recommend him. Don't take someone else for this class.
I had him and he was not very helpful of all. He tries to crack jokes in class and does not budge on grades he gives on curves when he fells they are necessary. He makes his first couple of exams easy and waits until the final to give you questions that are very wordy and tricky, which he knowns no one will pass. Be wise and not take his class!
His powerpoints are useless. He is very drawnout and likes to make things more complicated. He only gives curves when he feel they are necessary. He makes it clear there will be no extra credit and your grade is your grade. His first couple of test are easy and straight forward, but the final is the opposite very wordy and complicated.
His powerpoints are useful. He is very clear nd likes to make things less complicated. He gives curves when he feel they are necessary. He makes it clear there will beextra credit and your grade is your grade. His first couple of test are hard and not straight forward, but the final is the opposite.
Excellent
Easy class as long as you do the work.
Great prof. Class very hard but he gives all the help you need. Work hard and learn a lot and do well.
Great Class. He responds to emails quickly and is more than willing to help.
Class was once a week. He has a great sense of humor that makes class interesting. He uses a point-system as a grading scale. All quizzes are online and youre guaranteed a 100% on them. Any extra credit he gives, DO THEM. it will help your grade. Downfall is his exams, they can be a little tricky.
Do the weekly quizzes! It will help if you study those when preparing for tests. He adds a curve on tests too. The final was not complicated even though it was cumulative. Extra credit points will really boost your grade in the end.
Great Professor. Took an online political science class with him over the Summer. His voice over slides are helpful and he made the topics really interesting. Just wish he would teach more classes.
Professor Walsh's test is far from the guide he gives you for the exam. This is not a class to take if you don't enjoy reading because he assigns a ton of reading. He grades tough even if you do the work don't expect a guaranteed C or higher because that is not the case.
great teacher. His powerpoints were somewhat long but were extremely useful when it came to studying for his tests. He also makes video of the ppts explaining the info in it. Do take the weekly quizzes because they will help you study as well. His tests are pretty straight forward, reviewing the ppts and the quizzes will help. skim thru the book.
Go to class! He does in class activities that counts for participation. There are online quizzes (very very easy) & an online homework question due at the end of the week (also easy bc he goes over it in class) He keeps the class somewhat interesting with videos. Also posts his powerpoints online. Tests are okay, sometimes tricky
Great Professor. Reasonable and helpful. Does an excellent job of relating his topic to the real world.
James Walsh is the man. I wish all of my professors were this cool. His moodle page always has a ton of useful information and his tests are are information from classroom assignments, flashcards he gives you, and the quizzes, which you can take as many times as you need till you get a 100. Just show up to get a B, study to get an A.
Walsh is a great professor and his lectures and assignments are very interesting. The grading scale is very clear and the test are fair. Classroom activities count for you participation grade so GO TO CLASS. If you apply yourself you should come out with a B or and A. The only reason I received a C is because I was a total slacker.
HI-LAR-I-OUS. be prepared to laugh through most lectures when talking about int'l politics. BE CAREFUL not to miss any online quizzes & to keep up with them because they add up. DO the reading but beware sometimes the multiple choice questions are tests are a little tricky even if you studied so be prepared before exams. But I'd def take him again!
Jim is an awesome professor. This is a senior level course and he treats it as such. He doesn't lecture on the readings, but helps facilitate discussion. Do your readings and participate in discussion because it matters for your grade! Provides a lot of good feedback on your research paper throughout the semester. Great, sometimes sarcastic, humor!
Walsh is a funny guy and he makes the information suck less. His test are easy and the class is relaxed. I would take him again because he's a good elective class to have. His homework assignments do suck though, they are due at odd times and they can be tedious.
For a 1000 level class he sure does assign some pretty loaded homework questions-free response questions that he expects sources and multiple paragraphs and not easy to answer. Tests are too difficult with low class averages. No wonder this class never fills. Felt more like a 3000 level class the way its taught- take something else for an elective
This being my first online class, it went very well. From what I could pull from emails Professor Walsh seems like a very humble guy. Four exams, five papers, and a final exam. Tests are sometimes tricky, literally 95% will come from the book SO READ! I did not use the power-points, but copied them just to be safe. Overall great online class.
The tests are all multiple choice but can be a little tricky. You will have a weekly assignment to turn it but you go over it in the class before each one is due. Also have weekly quizzes that are online and multiple choice. Best study guides for the tests are the online quizzes! Also he is a real character and a stand up comedian.
Professor Walsh doesn't take attendance but your grade will surely show it. If you miss an online test or contemporary application your grade takes a big hit make sure you pay attention to those. Don't bother with his office hours or emailing him; his syllabus makes it clear that he pretty much doesn't like human contact.
Doesn't take attendance, but sometimes will do assignments in class that give extra credit
Prof Walsh is awesome, super funny guy and knows his stuff. There's online quizzes and short essay questions every week, but the essay questions are graded lightly and you can retake the quizzes till you get a 100. Tests can be tough but if you study the book and his online resources you'll be fine. I barely went to this class and made an A.
Prof. Walsh was pretty relaxed. The class I had was a hybrid so the lectures and homework were online, and the class was pretty worthless. Overall, it was an interesting and easy class if you need some general elective classes.
As someone who hates international politics, Professor Walsh is a wonderful teacher. I took this course as a hybrid but I looked forward to his class every week. My course had two homework assignments, a quiz and short essay response. Both very easy. His exams are very easy if you come to class and watch the online videos.
He's funny. His lectures are optional but you should go to hear what he has to say about the weekly assignment. There isn't too much work. He had extra credit, unlimited retake questions, short pass/fail responses every week, and six tests. Tests were MC and mostly easy-moderate. I'd take him again. I went to his office hours and he was nice.
Honestly What a man. His class is not that bad just read and take the quizzes. He gives you the answers to the CA question in class and if your not sure about your answer you can email him and he will basically give you the answer. Go to class tbh we got ten points one day just for coming. Test aren't bad. Honestly best professor Ive had so far.
I can honestly say that I genuinely look forward to this class every week!! Walsh makes the info interesting, and helps you form your answer for the short answer assignment due weekly, and the short quizzes are all on quizlet. The exams are easy peasy, esp if you go to the review. I attribute my 99.5 in the class to his great teaching! He's v cool!
Walsh was a good professor. It was difficult to do well on the Contemporary Application questions. Each week, over the half of the class time was spent discussing how to answer the question, and yet students still struggled. He offered enough extra credit to equate to almost half a letter grade, though. Would probably take him again.
Dr. Walsh is an Amazing professor. His lectures are easy to understand and he makes it fun to learn. Although attendance is not required still show up, he gives a crazy amount of extra credit!!! TO do well on the test just go over materials and try to make it to the test reviews.
Best professor I have had to date. Hilarious. You have 5 tests and that makes up like 75% of your grade or something. Makes the content interesting. I did not take very many notes, but got an A. Dr. Walsh has a gift of making the content naturally retainable.
James Walsh is a funny and great professor. We only met once a week since POLS1150 for him is a hybrid course (half online/half in person). You only get graded for the exams, CA assignments, and quizzes but if you pay attention to the book, you can easily get good grades for it. Professor Walsh also randomly give out extra credit.
Dr. Walsh's International Politics course is a pretty easy, introductory course. It will not require a lot of work each week. Make sure to study a little before the test and you will do all right. If you are unfamiliar with the material beforehand, take the time to delve into the material - it is interesting content!
my class was converted to online which made the class a lot easier. Every sunday, we had an essay due, the essay prompts weren't hard. The prompts were based on what we learned in class. Coming to class is mandatory because he uses it for extra credit at the end of the semester. Overall great teacher, like you won't have to stress out aboutHisCLASS
Great professor!! Really cares about students and you can tell through class discussions. Very great connection to have and provides very good insight. Definitely someone you want to keep in touch with in the long run.
Great professor. Class is definitely an easy A or B. One quiz a week, unlimited attempts, and one application question each week. Grading is lenient, him and his TA want you to have a good grade. The tests are more of a time crunch with pretty much 1 question per minute but he opens the exams for the whole weekend, easy to fit into a busy schedule.
online which made the class a lot easier. Every sunday, we had an essay due, the essay prompts weren't hard. The prompts were based on what we learned in class. We do quizzes and couple tests. Extra at the end of semester. But he sure takes his time putting the final exam in canvas.
He's so nice and so lenient. Every week there is a quiz and a 500 word essay due but they are both very easy and open-book.
I looked forward to coming to class every week because of the dynamic and engaging lectures and activities we had in class. I learned so much and I really appreciate the professor's teaching style. There is a fair bit of reading, but as long as you do it, the class will be very manageable. I would highly recommend it!
Dr. Walsh is a pretty solid choice. Half of your grade will come from one page essays that are easy As and the other half from 2 test. To pass these test you must do the reading which is a lot about 50 pages per week. You should do notes as the test is open book. You will work for it but totally possible to get an A.
Professor Walsh is by far one of my favorite professors! If you apply yourself and attend class, you are going to do great. He is great to talk to, and very kind.
Dr. Walsh is just a stand up guy. This class is pretty easy but it is heavily graded on a group project. If you have to carry your team it is pretty long but if you are balance you will be fine. Highly recommend to go in with a team strategy the first day of class.
Very fair and reasonable professor. Wish I could take him for all my classes
