This is the BEST astronomy prof! He was so nice and REALLY good at explaining everything. You can just listen on his lectures and you'll do good along w/ some notes. His final isn't cumulative and he was always willing to help/answer questions. This is one of my fave prof's.
One of the best professors ever! He's so nice and so cute. He's a hippie that wears astronomy Tshirts and he even brought his guitar to sing astronomy and Jimmy Buffet songs for us. His class is also very interesting and he makes everything very easy to understand. Take this class!
I LOVE PROFESSOR WEBB! He's such an adorable hippie, and he sang us astronomy songs for a kick. [quite well, i might add.] He's very clear, and willing to help academically. Take astronomy, you won't be sorry!
GREAT professor. Doesn't kill you on the tests, makes lectures interesting... GREAT class. He makes his class about learning, not about grades. Even if you aren't into physics/astronomy, this is a professor worth learning from. There are few good ones left- he's the best.
Excellent professor! Lectures very well, brings in gadgets (and even a guitar) to make learning fun in his class. He posts review notes for his exams that really help out. A funny and really cool person. I highly recommend him.
HIS LECTRUES ARE EASY TO UNDERSTAND. DON'T NEED THE BOOK. JUST STUDY THE NOTES AND THE REVIEW (WHICH HE POSTS ON THE WEB). HIS TESTS ARE MADE UP OF SIMPLE QUESTIONS. IF YOU STUDY YOU WILL GET AN A.
The best teacher I've had at FIU. He makes everything so interesting. I strongly reccommend.
This is an amazing professor, for sure one of my best so far at FIU. He made it interesting and he really knows his stuff. He's organized and is very fair on his tests and grading. He puts out study guides and curves the tests. He even brought in a guitar and sang songs about astronomy and brought us all 3-d glasses to look at some slides. Awesome.
Great professor with a profound passion for the subject, which makes the class all the more interesting. He brings in gadgets to demonstrate concepts, and keeps you interested. tests are easy.
hes awesome, class is easy, everything about him is positive. TAKE HIM! hes good =o)
He really likes astronomy alot. Only 4 tests. He really likes teaching
Very passionate. Wears NASA shirts every day. Reminds me of the crazy scientist in Independence Day. Class is very informative but not hard. If you want an interesting and laid back class, take his. He is a very nice person and makes the class fun. Be warned about his enviromentalist preachings!
Extremely condescending and uninteresting. The study guides up on his website have nothing whatsoever with what is on the test, you would be best off reading whole chapters and memorizing every minute detail about the subject.
His class isn't easy, but he does give you oppurtunities. As long as you show up for his class on a regular basis and make an effort to study for the tests it won't be hard. And sometimes, with a little bit of luck he gives extra credit.
This professor has a passion for the class and his teaching reflects his knowledge. He is very hands on and makes every effort to make you understand the concepts and ideas he presents. Exams are not difficult if you study...
I CANT STRESS ENUF U HAVE TO STUDY! his grds are based on tests n u take about 4. if u fail his class its because u didnt study. his class is easy as long as u show up pay attn n STUDY!!
very passionate about astronomy but his tests are kinda hard.
His class is not hard just plain borring at times specially me taking it at 8 am.. omg i will fall asleep. His test are HARD! i will read the book and still did bad. Do go to class to understand whats on the book! only 4 test. If you fail 1 you already got a b-, two and you failed!
He is the best teaacher ever, he even played guitarra and the songs were very funny, he is really cute:) and he loves his class
He's super adorable with his NASA shirts and plays songs for you on his guitar, down-to-earth teacher. All he does is lecture every single class for the entire hour & 15 min. Reading the book helps a bit for tests, but go to class and take notes, thats my best advice! Dont take at 8 AM though like i did, you WILL fall asleep. Pretty easy class.
He is one of the best professors I've had at FIU. He's so knowledgeable in it's content and he makes it really interesting. If I were better at physics I would have majored in Astronomy. Beautiful subject, great teacher.
Very fun class!!! The tests weren't bad if you read the book and studied notes! Studying class notes I think was more helpful than reviewing the book however, as some stuff taught in class differed from what was taught in the book. Overall, it was a pretty good class and the professor usually gave a little bit of a curve on the exams.
Very, very nice teacher and very helpful. Has a passion for the subject and knows what he is talking about. No homework ever, just 4 tests a semester. Puts up a review online for each test. Grades test on a curve. Go to class to take notes, study notes and online review and you're guaranteed an A.
Dr. Webb is a great professor with a great passion for what he does. I think most of the students in my class ruined this class for me. I have come into contact with a lot of ignorant students who are disrespectful to Dr. Webb. He's awesome. He teaches well. You must study for his tests, and he gives good notes!
Great professor, he is really passonate about the subject. It's a shame he doesn't teach more classes than he does. Because AST2004 is a lower division science course you have a lot of young kids that spoil the class with excessive talking. Their loss, one day they will realize what they missed.
Best professor ever. Dr. Webb makes the class fun and easy to understand an otherwise complex subject. Test are easy if you study the Study Guides. I recommend him to everyone.
HE IS SUPER NICE, IS REALLY INTO STELLAR ASTRONOMY. KNOWS HIS STUFF, THERE ARE 3 TEST, NON COMPREHENSIVE, THERE IS ALSO A STUDY GUIDE, HE IS TO COOL YOU CANNOT FAIL THIS CLASS~
One of the most passionate professors I have met yet. He has a vast knowledge and understanding of physics and the universe. He teaches extraordinarily well and always has fun when doing it, while making jokes that are either hit or miss. He makes the subject very exciting and can stimulate interest in that field of study.

he loves what he does and it shows. the tests come from the lectures.
EXCELLENT professor.Knows EVERYTHING there is to know about Astronomy. He even wears Einstein shirts.I really found it refreshing to find a teacher that loved teaching and loved the subject he taught.
I would not recommend Stellar Astronomy as an easy science course. I am very bad at science and was wrongly told this would be an easy class for me. I got an F. Webb is an good professor and he REALLY cares about astronomy, but you definitely have to have an interest or drive to do well in this course. Don't take this if science isn't your thing.
Dr. Webb is a really knowledgable professor. He knows his stuff and he loves to transmit what he know to students. He plays guitar too, and one day he brought his guitar to class and played songs the entire class. It was fun, they were all related to astronomy. There are 4 tests in the semester, just gotta class and copy good notes.. take him!!
Great teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable, tries very hard to be funny, and clearly enjoys teaching. His class is interesting and the exams are more than fair. I will definitely take him again.
Besides the useless labs and terrible TAs. This class is well worth taking. Dr. Webb is very passionate and extremely knowledgeable. You will learn alot and most likely enjoy the subject. Take notes and study those as well as his study guides online and you should do fine. There are some trick questions on tests that come out of no where though.
This guy is awesome. He tries really hard to make the class interesting and does a pretty good job. He's a funny, cool, and very fair professor. It is fairly necessary to read the book and the online quizzes are very helpful. The tests are based on both the lecture and the book. I actually learned in this class. I would definitely take him again.
Warning: This class was more along the lines of Physics 101, than Star Gazing for dummies. He's an awesome professor, very funny. I would recommend you take this class if you have a strong foundation in basic chemistry & physics, you'll find it a lot easier.
TAKE HIM. HE'S AWESOME! Definitely worth waking up early for the 8am class. Very Passionate. Funny & adorable. Not exactly an easy A. Doesn't provide a lot of extra credit. So if you do bad on the tests, you're stuck. Gives a study guide, a bit helpful. But you must STUDY HARD. He even has a concert class :D! Lab sucks, but worth it for the lecture
This class is very interesting. It is a lot of information and takes a lot of studying. Dr. Webb is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and has some really good slide shows. The tests are multiple choice and easy if you study. Attendance is mandatory and reading is recommended before class. The labs and the T.A. really are terrible though.
A very hard class. But, the teacher is really great. I didn't do well, but I didn't try either. He is very passionate about what he does and it shows. Tries very hard to get everyone awake for the 8am class. It's not what I expected, lots of memorization and math. The lab is really boring too. He's so cute though, he will play his music for you!
The best prof ever!!! Tests are simple if you make notes and read the book, you can get an A only if you study. No final test, just 4 non-comprehensive ones.
A really good professor. He very knowledgable about astronomy, obviously since he has a Ph.D in Astronomy. Very enthusiastic and funny. Makes the course very easy. I would recommend this class to science and non-science majors.
He's very passionate, and does a good job at waking you up for his 8am class. He gives good lectures and his tests are easy if you show up, pay attention in class and read the chapters. He's super fun.
Aw, he's a super sweet man. He knows what he's talking about and tries his best to keep everyone awake for his 8 am class. He makes simple analogies for difficult concepts. He also gives reviews online, but going to class is your best bet at an A. All in all, he's a great guy! OH, he also write songs about Astronomy which is super cool!
By far the most interesting science class you can take. Great lecturer, extremely passionate about his work, and makes even heavy topics comprehensive. Even has a concert class and plays songs with his guitar! Fun, interesting, and pretty easy. Study your notes, use his study guide, and read the book. You can get an A.
He is really nice. The class wasn't the easiest but it was bearable. You just have the read the book and it helps to pay attention. Attendance is mandatory. The lab is really easy. I would recommend him.
NOT an easy A! You will have to work for your grade. Buy the book and study at home and you will get an A, specially if you download his study guide online. 4 exams, 25% each. He's a really nice guy but Astronomy is really boring at 8 in the morning. It's not impossible to get an A but you will have to study for the exams and take notes.
This is an easy A, but if you go to class and at least skim the chapter you're guaranteed at least a B. He's really good at making sure lectures aren't boring which is important for an 8 am class. This is the perfect class to fulfill a UCC or just for fun.
This guy is really laid back, almost like a hippie. He loves his music and astronomy. For an 8 am class, he tries his best to make it interesting. The class overall is very easy if you just keep track w/ the chapters and study for the tests. No HW or assignments.. just STUDY. The tests are not hard at all & he gives online study guides.
Great teacher. Explains everything in layman's terms. Study guide is online for all 4 tests. Non comprehensive final. Really laid back guy. Easy class, do not really need book if you go to the lectures.
Awesome teacher! Truly changed my perception on the universe and spurred my interest in astronomy. This man cares about his students and wants them to do well. Great guy and he loves his job!
He is so great! Really passionate about what he teaches, you can tell he loves what he does (he even sings songs about astronomy). Go to EVERY class, do the review and you'll be fine. Totally recommend him! He's that teacher everyone should take at least once in college, really changes your perspective on things.
Professor Webb is an extraordinary professor. He does his best to make sure his students learn and aren't just lectured. The class can get a bit dull at times however he is very passionate about his work. I got an A in his class. He has 4 exams for which he has posted reviews online. He also curves his tests making it impossible to do bad. TAKE HIM
INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR. He really cares about his students and truly wants you to learn. Don't buy the book, just go to every lecture and you'll know everything you'll need for the exams. Makes lectures really interesting and really helps you understand the content. Plus he plays a few songs about astronomy at the end! :)
AMAZING PROFESSOR! He truly loves what he teaches and makes the material easy to absorb. I had never studied Astronomy until this class & Dr. Webb now has me feeling like an astronomer myself! You don't need the book, just attend class and you'll learn loads of new information - TAKE HIM :)
He's a pretty nice guy, but the lectures aren't that exciting. Use the online study guides that he gives, and you'll get at least B's on all the tests. The final isn't cumulative, so that's a relief. 4 tests overall. He really does care about his students and wants to help them succeed. Would definitely recommend for an easy class.
Very inspirational, very smart, great guy, love him to death. Impossible not to love him, lectures are long but the study guides have all the info.
Taking this class in the fall of 2014 I found the class interesting because of the subject matter not necessarily the teacher. There are ONLY four noncumulative exams and nothing else. At first, this may seem like student paradise No work to be done, just Study but its not! Your grade is solely based on your test-taking skills! Not Good...
This man knows his craft. Amazing physicist.
The first destroyed me, but after that I learned how to study for them. Study guides and lectures are EXTREMELY helpful. He is really nice, and always ready to help via email or office hours.
For introductory courses, Webb is great, but once you get to higher level courses it becomes significantly more difficult. If you're taking Observable or Astrophysics your math is already plenty good, so you'll get by. Webb flies through material and hardly explains it. The book he uses is no help at all either. You are going to have to work for it
If you have not taken Modern physics 2 I highly advise you not to take it. The course is very arduous and the homework has no solution manual. You are very in the dark about knowing if you're doing something right. Webb has very high expectations of his students and expects you to be an astronomer by the end of this course.
Great guy. I hated that the hw had no solutions manual. There was no way to check my work. If I wanted to correct any questions I had to go to his office to ask for his solutions, and since he knows what he's doing they were vague. Final is a compilation of the exam The exams were easy, but occasionally they asked for specific detail. Fair grader
Does not use blackboard so to know your grade you have to go see him at his office hours As he will not give you your grade over email. The book is way easier than what he lectures. Teach your self.
This professor was my all time favorite. He actually enjoys what he teaches unlike other professors. This guy was an amazing professor. He would conduct a review during the first half of class, before the test! like seriously, if you study a little, and listen to his lectures, this is an enjoyable class and an easy A. Very clear, and very kind.
He was really great! He really cares for what he does and wants everyone to pass. He provides A LOT of extra credit, but I'm sure it helped some people. His class is lectures, and he covers everything you need to know. I only looked in the book if a concept confused me. You should come to class though if you want to pass because the book is wordy.
His tests are 25 questions based on videos and pictures he shows in the weeks between tests so good luck. His lectures sound absolutely incoherent, though he knows the material he doesn't know how to teach it. He gives extra credit but not enough to save you from the tests that are riddled with questions about nonfactual statements he says in class.
He is a really nice, sweet and funny guy, who is extremely knowledgable and passionate about this subject but class lectures can get boring easily and his tests are very detailed oriented. Overall not a bad class but it helps if you really pay attention in class.
His lectures are long and detail-oriented, but as long as you write down all of those details, you'll pass the class with flying colors without needing to read. He gives huge curves and extra credit opportunities. He's very knowledgeable and the class is interesting. 4 tests total. My tip: actually pay attention in class, and you'll get an A.
Professor Webb is a charismatic old guy, he tries to make the class entertaining by interacting with the students. The lectures get long and boring but he loves his job and it shows. He has study guides for all his exams, and they cover all the material that will be in them, so make sure to read those! His tests are passable and he helps with bonus
Professor Webb is a professor I would definetely take again, and he does not give any homework. Your grade for the class is based of of 4 test, which you will do well on if you take notes in class, pay attention, and study. You are given some opportunities to gain extra points on exams if he has an event going on.
The class is tough if you don't like the material, but I highly recommend it if you're interested in Astronomy. Very good introductory course into the field. Exams are simple if you do a bit of reading. Reading is highly recommended, almost a must to do well in the exams. Dr. Webb makes the lectures fun.
This teacher is very passionate about what he teaches, if it were not for his passion to have us learn, I would probably have failed. He makes class interesting and he is the sweetest. Sit in the front because class tends to be full of students and it is hard to listen well from the back. I recommend him. You do need to study from the book!
You have to pay attention to the lectures he gives or you won't pass. He gives you study guides, but they're only enough to get you a C in the class. Your grade is solely based on your test taking skills which I'm horrible at so if your not good at taking tests and depend on homework to help balance your grade DON'T take him.
He is really passionate about his stuff.
He doesn't give homework but he gave our class 4 exams , including the midterm and final. All are non-cumulative, but if you're not good with tests, I wouldn't recommend him. He is really lecture heavy and there's like 4-6 chapters in each test. No extra credit except for his "Star Party" which is a lecture on stars, but it's only worth 5 points.
Dr. Webb is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He really knows his stuff, he is passionate and shows his interest when he teaches. You have to study for this class! Only 4 tests, each worth 25% of your grade. He will help you if you need it! Unfortunately a lo of people didn't come to class. That was sad! gives a 10 point curve each test!
Professor Webb is such a nice person and does care about his students. You can tell he knows the material well. Your grade is based off of 4 tests. He does have study guides but they aren't enough for the tests. Pay attention to his LONG lectures, take notes, look over the book, and you should be fine.
Take Dr. Webb, he is amazing! He is really nice, go to his office hours to go over your test or learn more about the universe! This class has been one of the most interesting courses I have ever taken.
He is a great guy but SUPER BORING! attendance is not required and he tries to make the class interested but he is very monotone. He only gives 4 test and requires to attend a night lab. the class was ok but I wouldn't take it again
This professor is really passionate about what he teaches! Lectures can get boring but the class is very simple. Take lots of notes! I made quizlets for most of the tests (search the class code) Try not to miss too much class because he makes questions for tests based off his lecture. Lab for this class was super easy as well! Great class overall
Worst class I ever took. If you arent good with lectures that are 8am in the morning and boring as hell DONT TAKE HIM. You only get graded on four tests for the whole semesters. No hw. No extra credit. During the test people are just cheating cause its that hard. Hes good and kind but teaching is bad.
His lectures are dense. If you don't take notes you definitely won't pass his class as his tests are mainly based on that. I only missed one class and I still struggled with the tests. The grade is based on 4 tests that are not easy. He did give to extra credit opportunities but I never got it added to my grade. He is passionate about astronomy.
This class is not too bad. He has 4 exams throughout the semester no homework or extra credit but he does curve. He is a sweet man and is very passionate about what he teaches and wants to help you. His exams arent hard. As long as you take notes. He does provide a study guide on his website and his exams is straight forward. Just attend class
Dr. James Webb is a kind-hearted individual who shows his passion for teaching. He even makes music about Blackholes lol. I love the simplicity of his class structure, 4 tests with some extra credit opportunities. The tests only require a shallow understanding of the material so they are easy if you study. I will be taking him for AST2003.
Prepare to listen to him lecture the whole semester. Overall there are only 4 exams, so make sure you study.
Although Professor Webb is a sweet and passionate man, his class is way to hard for a intro science class. His tests are not always accurate to his study guides and class notes so it was very difficult passing this class. He does curve the tests typically 5-10 points & provide a couple out of class extra credit opportunities which I did appreciate.
Takes his class, he is a really good teacher that cares about astronomy. You will get a lot of extra credit as long as you show up.
Although Dr. Webb is passionate about the subject. Please dont take his class if u cant handle a lecture heavy professor who is extremely boring . He only gives four exams and his study guides arent always accurate.
Dr. Webb is a great professor. He is super passionate about his work, and he shows up energetic to class every morning. He taught through lectures, and we were only graded on 4 tests spread throughout the semester. he passed around an attendance sheet. but attendance wasn't necessary. He is super friendly and funny. You can always ask questions.
Professor Webb is kind and passionate about teaching, but the class is difficult if you are not good at science. His lectures are boring and most of the information on the exams he does not cover in detail. You are only graded by 4 exams, so if you bomb one it's almost impossible to get an A. Also, do not take this at 8 am, you will not learn
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. If you don't go to class you won't pass the tests, and they are very specific and pretty long. Be ready to work.
He has a great personality as a person, but as a professor his lectures are boring and dragged on forever. Stopped going, just read the textbook at home & still passed every test. Emailed us about not showing up & still didn't show up. The entire semester is based off only 4 tests, ^ you only need a basic understanding of astronomy to pass them.
Dr. James Webb's class was very easy. He tries his best to make the lectures entertaining, so if you are interested in astronomy, I highly recommend this professor. He explained things extremely clearly and the things you learn are brought up for the rest of the semester. Everything on the tests is discussed in class. passing=easy, txtbk not needed
There is no reason an introductory science course should be this hard. Not only are Webb's lectures incredibly monotonous and boring, they also have very little to do with the tests that determine our entire grade. If you respect yourself and your time, do not take this course and take something like biology instead. You will regret taking this!
Dr. Webb knows his stuff however his lectures are incredibly boring and his exams are not even based on what he teaches. This is an intro class, not a full-blown physics class. DO NOT TAKE HIS 8 AM CLASS IT'S POINTLESS.
Great professor. Clearly knowledgable on the material taught in class. If you show up to class and are present then you will get a good grade.
Your grade is determined solely by 4 tests. If you miss two or more classes before the next test, you won't get the curve. While studying for the 3rd test, I realized he had the wrong textbook on Canvas. When I asked him about it, he said "I know" and that he just didn't feel like correcting it. It hindered my studying the whole class.
Dr Webb is very passionate about astronomy but he teaches it as if you already know some of the more complex terminology. I don't recommend taking his 8 am class because it will be super hard to stay awake. Very non-engaging. He offers EC opportunities if you go to his night lectures but besides that, your grade is solely based off of 4 exams.
Professor Webb is very passionate about astronomy and really tries to get his class engaged. However, his lectures can get long and boring. He is a very respected man and its willing to answer any questions. He only grades based on 4 tests and attendance. He also offers a few extra credits.
I hated astronomy, and I think that this professor was not very good. He is very passionate about astronomy, but his only class is 8ams. Also his lectures were extremely boring. He gave a textbook to go by and the chapters in the textbook did not correlate to the chapters we went over in class. I went to go discuss it with him and he didn't care.
You can tell he knows his stuff and is really passionate, but that man does not know how to teach. The whole class is failing and somehow he doesn't see he is the problem. The grade is based only on 4 tests so I would think twice before taking his class, plus they are only 8 am.
Save yourself from having to experience the most boring lectures you will ever encounter. All he does is copy his own notes on the board which are all out of order, with little to no explanation. There are only 4-5 students left cus everyone dropped. Gives no partial credit on exams even if you understood the main idea/purpose of the problem.
I would not take this class again. He only grades by tests. He lowkey gives attitude to his students. And he has really long boring lectures. His voice makes you wanna sleep. He should give more extra credit and homework to help his students pass.
To start, Professor Webb is a really nice guy and he's definitely passionate about what he teaches. However, the whole class is his PowerPoint lecture and it's extremely boring. There is no homework so if you want to do well in the class you have to pay attention for the whole class and study a lot, which is hard bc his voice is rlly monotone
Great professor super nice, and he truly enjoys teaching. But if you don't enjoy taking tests do not take this class!!!! He only grades tests, there is no classwork or homework and his 8 AM class will put you to sleep.
You can study for weeks and still only get a C. I tried every study method, and the best I got was a B. The exams are extremely difficult—you need to know every detail. Extra credit isn't worth it, and this professor can hurt your GPA. I recommend finding another class. Take it at your own risk—your GPA won't thank you. He is nice but is too hard
DO NOT take this professor. It was challenging to pay attention to his monotone voice. He offers a little extra credit, but it barely does anything to your grade. He has four tests, 25% each worth towards the grade, no HW. He takes attendance, but it isn't mandatory. He is very smart in what he does, but he just isn't good enough to teach it well.
Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's a lot easier to understand the material enough to pass his class irl with notes. He does have a tendency to read off a ppt but his passion and examples make the class all the better. The class does consist of 4 exams that are 25% of the grade and gives very little extra credit. For the credit, its worth it.
This guy should not be teaching he is very passionate about his subject but sucks at teaching tests are nothing like the study guides
He is passionate about the topic but he can't teach properly, voice is too monotone & his notes & study guide don't always align to the test. The tests are always more complicated then it should be. 4 whole tests is what you're graded on and his extra credit does absolutely nothing to your grade. I'm a straight A student and he just tanked my GPA.
All students cheat in this class, that's how they pass. He refused to change curves for his 4 exams when cheating was reported. Study guides weren't updated with current teaching materials and he doesn't tell students that. He refused 2 change my grade at the end of the semester from 78.75 to an 80. Its his decision to do that, but most profs would
I am a non-science major taking his class to fill my science requirements. Dr. Webb is great at being an astronomer, but he is not good at teaching it. He speeds through everything in the lectures and leaves lots of information out in the study guides leading up to the tests. He also teaches about %30 of the test material the day before the test.
