This was by far was the worst class I have taken at U of H. I took this course online during the summer (10 week course) and even though it was calculator based, the style of teaching was horrible. Look forward to teaching yourself this course! Good Luck!
I took the online class. Professor West was great and he has a genuine interest in helping students. 1 online test, 2 midterm, 1 final. Replaces the lowest midterm with the final if higher. HW's are short and to the point. Quizzes are a bit harder. Tests were straightforward and over pretty easy problems. This class made me love online classes!
This class was taken online. Professor West is very helpful and will create extra online classroom times (usually at 9:30 pm) to help individuals on specific math problems. Homework and tests were easy, if you are good at math. Quizzes are harder. There are several opportunities for extra credit (up to 10 points added onto each test score).
Mr. West was an excellent online instructor. He will however, spend minimum time on subjects due to online class time constraints, so you need to ask if you are lost, because you will quickly be behind. If you struggle with math I would not recommend online, however if you have self-discipline and a good math background you'll do great.
Professor West is a great teacher gives out a lot of work but it all benefits you and preps you for his exams. Trust me if you do everything he gives you to do, you will make an A, the tests come straight from the work. His class is by no means easy, but work hard and you will be rewarded for your hard work. He does give out test reviews.
REALLY hard class, but I a great prof, he really tries to help you when youre lost, dont take this class online unless you have a lot of self discipline and a strong math background
Professor West is a great teacher and very helpful. The class material itself is not the easiest but the test are just like the problems he goes over. He also gives you the opportunity for 10 bonus points on every test and final and submits review videos before every exam.
Great Professor!! Very straight-forward tests aren't so bad if you pay attention and keep with everything. Should be able to receive a A-B range.
This guy is awesome! One of the best I have had, him and Balthazar. Really helpful and cares for his students. He will stay up late and do extra help sessions and will not stop until he sees you understand the material. Real cool, down to earth guy. Take his online class, its not bad at all. He responds to all emails gives lots of extra credit.
Just an overall amazing teacher! The class itself is not easy but your best bet to pass Cal3 is to take his class. If you do your part and take enough time to study and practice you will pass his class easily. If you have any questions during lecture he will stay after class and help you with a smile. You wont find a better math teacher at U of H!
He is very willing to help you, however he wants to help everyone so much that he often runs over the allotted time by 30-90 minutes. Sometimes he over complicates subjects. However, he is the best option for Cal 3 this semester. Very nice man. I would recommend him. Just make sure you understand the examples in the notes.
By far the best class I've ever taken at UH.Material is really hard, but if you keep up with the online quizzes, the emcfs, and the homeworks, you will not have problems during the semester. 100% recommended.
Gives lots of work but it will pay off. EMCF's, HW, online quizzes, recitation quizzes. Tests are in casa and super easy. Prof west is the most clear teacher I have had and gives tons of bonuses but I won't spoil them for you ;). As long as you do the work properly, you will easily get an A.
First time taking an online course. If you can keep yourself on track, this isn't bad. If you're lazy, not good at calculus, and unable to sit and watch lectures for 3 hours-don't take this. West is a good professor, last two exams are harder than first.
Prof West is great, very clear, very straightforward, very concise with his lectures, works test question examples and answers questions. Highly recommend.
I'm still a little bitter about people saying Cal 3 is easy, os take mine with a grain of salt. Cal 1 and 2 are easy and 3 is hard. I did find him to be a hair condescending sometimes. Anyway, I worked hard and got an A. Don't fall into the trap of using old homework answers and chegg. I did it and I had to muddle for my A and I didn'tlearnitwell.
Good class,Professor West was very interesting. Class had a heavy workload but it became a routine and he ends up dropping quite a few grades at the end.
Professor West is easily the best Math Professor I've ever had. He's always available to answer questions and help you and genuinely cares if you're understanding the material or not. I had a hard time on one of the concepts in the class and he took almost 2 hours out of his day to make sure that I completely understood. Take him.
Professor West was an awesome when it comes to teaching and he helps you to understand the content. At the same time he is not what you call an easy "A" professor. He does give out alot of work for you to do outside of class but he has a reason so that you can practice. He also has review videos to watch. You will love this class.
James West is a great professor who cares about his students. Took him online, and we would end up staying 30 mins late because he would move one when everyone understood the material. Work load is high, but his notes and videos are helpful. Test were fair and similar to review questions. Just keep up with the lectures and you should be fine.
Great prof. Took it online. Made Calc 2 a lot easier than it should be. Weekly homework and quizzes, extra credit opportunities for every test. The three hour lectures were kind of unbearable, but that's not his fault.
West is a cool guy he knows his material. The class I took was a one month mini session. The class was tough because it was a semesters time of work in one month but I was able to make it out with an A-.
Very good professor. I would take him again. Do the practices test he gives and the online one and you should pass his tests. Quizzes and homework should all be done too.
Decent teacher
Great professor. Explains everything very well and will answer questions with great clarity. Emails are returned quickly. Would definitely take again.
We have 3 exams, and 1 final, popper questions(multiple choice) that are graded towards your attendance grade. His lectures are live online lectures but if you miss any or do bad on poppers, you can do the alternative assignment to replace your popper questions grade. About 1-2 quizzes, 1EMCf(multiple choice Q), and 1Written Hw due each week.
Gives lots of chances to get homework right, lots of practice for tests. If you get the material, you don't need to spend tons of time doing homeworkprepping for tests.
Professor West is an excellent math teacher. He makes the material clear and organized and always helps with questions. As long as you understand the class notesexamples you will do good on tests. Also gives bonus opportunities. However, test grades are slow and homework is posted less than a week before it's due. Still highly recommended!
Professor West is amazing! He takes difficult material and makes it so easy to understand. He is helpful, and he is respectful of his students. He's also really funny so it's easy to pay attention. This class is a lot of work with homework, quizzes, etc. but the extra work allows you to better learn the material. I would definitely take him again.
Professor West made tough material easier to understand. With all his lecture recorded and posted online, missing class wasn't devastating to your grade like most math courses would be. HE DOESN'T SKIP STEPS. This is a huge thing with me and college math professors. He doesn't just assume you know. He's an awesome prof.
Professor West is a great professor. He provides clear lectures to the material and makes sure we understand the material. The problems he went over in his lectures really helped us understand the material more and helped us review for the exams. My advice is to attend lectures, do all H.W., all quizzes, and study hard for the exams.
Great prof, probably the best at UH for lower level maths. Always on time, very clear explanations. If you attend class, there's no reason why you shouldn't pass. Wish he taught Cal 2 and 3.
Have nothing negative to say about Mr. West
Prof. West is very good and he explains things very well. He is organized and works example problems step by step to help you understand. He gives online quizzes, written homework, poppers and emcf. Attendance is not mandatory, but you have to show up in order to turn in poppers and get credit.
Class is difficult and the homework load is HEAVY. If you did well in CALC II then CALC III won't be all that bad. Classes are recorded and videos are posted on the calendar website, but there are poppers so go to class. Do the HW, QUizzes, and practice Exams.; IT WILL HELP!!!
HE'S AMAZING! Very thorough, on time, organized, punctual, helpful and the list goes on. He's very knowledgable and always willing to help. There is a lot of hw for the class but do it as it is good practice & will help on the test. He posts lectures online but be sure to show up for poppers. I wish I could take him for more math classes.
One of the best professors you can take at the University of Houston for all of the Calculus levels. My only fault was not putting in the time and effort. Totally regret it because he really great at teaching these courses. Take him. You can't go wrong with him. Bekki George is too fast. Almus is too slow. West is always right on track. Easy choice
Too specific during online lectures. Doesn't specify how things are graded nor does he believe us knowing are grade helps us. You're left clueless till the last second.
Choose this guy, it wasn't hard, I got an A. Also, I'm a B student, so if you want a good grade, choose West and put in some effort .
I've already had a background in Calculus and everything was pretty simple to me from the first week on. He does a great job at teaching the subject. If you do not understand the subject, i recommend you go to CASA the day before the test and just review. If you have a question on a certain problem just ask and they'll explain just great.
He's a decent professor, I didn't really do any of the homeworkquiz but i did review and do practice test before every test and manage A's on all of them. If you are decent at mathcalc you will be fine.
He is the only person to take math from ad UH. He is clear, helpful and wants you to succeed. He also wants everyone to get an A, he gives extra credit (replacing lowest exam score with final) and some other extra credit bonuses here and there. Course was really hard though, but your best chance is with Prof. West.
I think he was an okay professor. Always go to class, always do your written HW, electronic HW, CASA quizzes, anything that is a grade. Also, do all the reviews (electronic and written) and you should be fine. In all honesty, compared to the other Calcs I thought Calc. 3 was the easiest. Though, I HAD TO REALLY WORK FOR IT! Was worth it at the end.
Professor West is awesome! He really knows how to explain the material really well. He is there to help, but one should keep up with the material, quizzes, and homeworks. Calc 2 is a hard class itself, but West makes it easier.
Definitely a good professor, but taking this class online was a huge mistake. Online class times aren't posted on enrollment and the lectures are generally long.
Definitely the easiest of the calculi. This class is basically cal I with a third dimension. Homework can sometimes be tough but it's doable. Tests are extremely easy in comparison. Friend of mine had a 50 average on the quizzes and still got As on the exams. You can make an A IF you put the work! Don't fall behind in this class or you'll do bad.
Just do your homework, quizzes, and the practice test and you'll do fine. He even post lectures online so if you miss a day of class.
I must say this professor is amazing! I didn't rate the easiness column 5 star because you cannot easily make 100, but it's really easy to make an A in his class if you attend the lectures and do the hw. I took his online class and all his exams and homework were highly related to his lectures. I'm really glad that I took his class.
Awesome professor.
Great guy, good teacher, and hard class. Would not take online.
I took cal 3 with him and he is super helpful in his lessons I usually understand everything, he also give u examples and practice exams, I would definitely take his class again if I can
Has a gift for lecturing, and his notes are meticulous. Very easy to follow and understand. Excellent professor, take him.
Professor West was great. I took him online for Cal III and it was pretty easy. He explains the material in a way its easy to understand. There is homework but its really not that bad- all Cal III classes have homework. Online quizzes that all Cal III classes have. Online class wasn't mandatory- there was a make up assignment for poppers.
He is an okay teacher. Nothing extraordinary, but not bad either. He is very willing to help though. Easy class.
He is a good professor, don't procrastinate the hw, he really wants his students to succeed and is very sincere about it.
Professor West was not for me. I got tutoring, but most of my tutors had no knowledge of cal 3 and could not help me much. I took Almus for cal 1 and 2 and made A's in both classes. The professor really makes or breaks you (when it comes to your GPA). I would choose someone else who explains things better and is less confusing.
Amazing professor! The only online math class I recommend. Provided online live lecture twice a week (like a face-to-face class), which were so helpful. The amount of homework we get (EMCF, written, quizzes) is more than I expected, but it helps so much for the exams.
West is a great professor. You will do very well if you stay engaged and keep strong, and he will give you EVERY opportunity to make sure you pass and/or meet your goals if you put in the work. He gives a lot of grade savers and extra credit. I gave up and didn't take those opportunities. I will have to retake this class with another professor
Will help you understand the material and break it down Barney style if need be. It all comes down to you though, this is a class where you have to do the homework. If all you do is attend class, you will fail. You NEED to put in the time outside of class.
His lectures are long and a little drawn out but very informative. He gives a lot of homework and a little bit of extra credit compared to the other teacher.
It is an easy A if you put in the work. He cares about the student's success in the class but you have to be willing to do your best.
I don't like his teaching style. He is very into going over the formulas and symbols for everything, which is alien language to me. I personally learn better with examples. He does do examples, but he rushes through them and there's not many of them. He cracks jokes from time to time and is makes sure he is available for office hours.
I got a 5 on the BC calc test and genuinely enjoyed mathematics before this class. West is a poor professor who will make mistakes in the practice problems, give half the extra credit of other professors and assigns double the work for the same credit, along with having an extra hour of class per week. I regret taking West for every possible reason
UH math department is pretty solid so if you don't HAVE to take him, consider taking other professors. He goes through his lectures fast, and does a couple of simple examples in class then ask difficult quizzes, even the TA mentioned that he was teaching too fast. Also the math dept all have the same test but what matters is if you understand.
Can't really teach although he goes through the motions. I get calculus less after taking it with this man.
Professor West is extremely boring to listen to, you'll want to be on your phone the entire duration of the lecture just listening to him. He skimps out on examples that are actually needed to solve the quizzes often. You'll find that using Youtube videos and other online resources are going to help you way more. Take George for Calc II.
Solid lecturer. Large quantity of weekly hw (it does help prepare for exams). At times, unfair test questions. Tough grading. OVERALL: Nothing crazy special, but not bad either. Work hard and get an A.
West is a good lecturer but sometimes goes a bit fast, very willing to clarify and answer questions of asked. There is alot of work but its helpful and if you do well on the tests you can make up for low homework and quiz grades. Makes you earn your grade.
West is condescending to those that don't know their material. He goes really fast during lecture and always gets upset when no one answers his questions. There's a lot of quizzes and homework to do. The examples on the notes are a lot different compared to homework so it'll be hard if you don't understand the concepts very well. Really boring.
I have taken cal 2 and cal 3 with West. I don't love him as an instructor personally. Sometimes he skips steps when showing work and isn't as organized as other instructors. Treats students with respect and expects respect back. kind of monotone and boring. Take cal with a different instructor if math isn't one of your strengths.
If you have taken Calculus before(like in high school) you should be fine in this class, majority of students have typically. But if you did not- do NOT take him. He goes through things assuming everyone has had the course before and goes through examples super fast not going into much detail of working them out. Take someone else if you can!
He's a great guy, he always keeps you updated through emails about due dates for assignments and opportunities to get more involved in the class. He gives great notes for students and he's always open to questions among students. There should be no reason why someone would fail his class.
Does not prepare you well for exams, and doesn't teach the course well being that he acts like everyone has taken calculus before... find someone else!
Professor West makes you work for it but the A is easily achievable. Get a 95 on the final and its an automatic A. Get a 70 on the final and its an automatic pass.
West is very straightforward with what he is presenting. Lectures are quite boring but so is calc. I suggest attending the labs, they help immensely and if you are failing by the end of the semester get a 70 on the final you are guaranteed to pass.
Very Rude.
Very funny, but tends to be condescending to his students. "You won't pass if...", "There is no hope if you...", etc. Cal 3 isn't that hard, just study the quizzes and practice tests and you'll be fine.
He is really condescending to the students, but tries to play it off sarcastically. He has really good notes and gives you access to them online, but he goes too quickly in the classroom for you to retain much of anything. Personally, I don't think he has the intentions to really help you and he would rather talk about how disappointing we are...
He is a funny, compassionate teacher who cared about his students understanding the material. He always makes time for questions and encourages you to see him during his office hours for any additional questions. He takes constructive criticism very well and only improves his lectures. Would definitely take him again. Such a good and funny prof.
Dr. West is truly a great person. He is caring and will do anything to assist students. I have never actually seen him be condescending. He might go in too deep while explaining some really simple stuff but, eh, I guess it's fine. He still explains stuff well. He has poppers, though. The tests are really easy, just DO the practice tests.
Professor West is extremely boring to listen to, you'll want to be on your phone the entire duration of the lecture just listening to him. Skips examples. George is def better for Calc 2. Very rude as well, clearly not happy with himself.
He's a character for sure. Lectures can get boring but he tries to make it entertaining. His handwriting is just amazing and all lectures are recorded and PDF's are uploaded. There is no reason for you to fail with the oppurtunities he gives you!
i found him to be complete opposite to my previous math teachers in a college , where they keep saying not my problem for any questions relating to issues you have. one of my friends missed his mid term test, and he approached the dean to help the student get a new spot, HE ALSO POSTS THE LECTURES ONLINE SO YOU CAN GO RE-ATTEND THE LECTURES.
Professor West is the most straightforward math professor I have encountered yet. If you want a professor that can communicate effectively while being thorough, straightforward, some-what strict, and caring, West is your guy. If you're a baby that blames their horrendous math skills at the teacher, don't take him. Use the book. HW. Be resourceful.
Doesn't elaborate much in class, and when you ask questions he's very condescending and makes you feel stupid in front of the whole class. Expects you to memorize the formulas after looking a them once and doesn't even explain what it does and how to use it.
College algebra. He's straight to the point and sarcastic which makes class entertaining sometimes. He seems like he hates life but you can tell he enjoys math when he starts teaching it! Great guy! Just show up to class to see how to work out problems and you should be good. Practice tests are just like the real thing. Tests easier than quizzes.
Professor West is a great Cal 1 & 2 professor. He is very straight forward and funny, which makes the lectures easy to follow. He records all his lectures and posts them online with his notes. Best way to study is to keep going over problems and doing the homework assigned, but overall the class is fairly simple as long as you keep up with it.
Professor west is a great professor he teaches and explains everything during lecture and you could even ask him one on one ,he will help you. What I find also interesting about his class is he records his lecture and posts it on CASA so that way if you missed class , or you didnt understand some things in class you could watch the lecture.
Terrible professor. Not really trusting, caring or reliable. He rambles to much in his videos and they are longer than they should be. You're better off self studying for this class than to use his resources.
James David West is a solid pick for Multivariable Calculus. He is thorough in his notes and examples and posts all lectures online. There is ample opportunity to save your grade if you are not doing well and his office hours are effective. All notes and lectures are posted to CASA so if you miss a class you aren't doomed. Great pick!
Professor West knows math and you do learn a lot, but his behavior is not reflective not only of a professor, but a man his age. You do learn R Studio but it is not worth so much effort. Efficiency could be better by getting better software and lowering the level of difficulty of the exams by allowing a code cheat sheet.
Professor west can be quite confusing in his online lecture videos, he skips some steps saying we should know how to get there by now and can come off as rude unintentionally. His grading scale is terrible, no + or - just flat letter grades A or B so an 89 is a flat B. Harsh grading on FRQs, got points off for bad handwriting. Mediocre at best.
I'm going to be brutally honest and save your grade. He goes EXTREMELY fast when solving problems and assumes you know everything. He ridiculed me in his office hours and made me feel stupid when I asked him the definition of relative frequency. He claims he cares about students on the first day of class but it's a lie. I am saving you, AVOID him!
Only take him if he is your last option. His voice is beyond monotone and his lectures are very lengthy and boring. The only thing that will help you really learn is practice problems.
Lectures were pretty boring and lots of homework. Don't recommend unless he's your last option.
Explains his lectures in details & WILL explain further if needed
West is a great prof if you already know what you're doing. He moves VERY fast, you barely have time to write down notes. If anything, pay attention as much in class, then take notes after he uploads them online. He comes off very rude in office hours, makes you feel dumb. However, he is VERY organized and its easy to contact him/know due dates.
Dr. West is a good lecturer and is an effective teacher. However, he can be really intense and sometimes comes off a bit rude. I dont know if this was just my experience because the class was online or if this is how he really is. But overall, he did a good job teaching me calc 3. I thought his notes were good and he taught the subject well.
I personally think West has one of the funniest personalities in lectures, but I'm pretty sure that's not the common opinion. If you're a math major then I think he's a good pick for in-person classes.
Terrible professor.
When emailing him with questions don't expect him to answer you on the same day or even that same week. There are only two tests in this class. While the midterm related to the material, the final did not. He introduced new material on the final that we didn't go over in class or on hw. He continually insisted that we were all cheating.
So west was basically the only option I had, if not I would have to wait for the spring semester when Weber might teach to but that would set me a year back. His test is nothing like the review and he does the easiest examples in class and when it comes to the hw and quizzes he gives you hard examples. Doesn' give enough time for the exams on 60min
West does NOT care about his students. He always puts you down for asking questions and makes you feel dumb for not knowing something even though you're paying him to teach you. I passed cal 1 and 2 no problem but he made it so difficult to learn. His exams have questions he's never taught before. Don't waste your tuition money on this guy.
If you can, avoid him. He's condescending and went on an hour tangent in live lectures just to blame the students for having a bad test average when the exams were nowhere close to any quiz, hw, or practice given. He blames us for not trying hard enough and is even randomly accusing students of cheating. I get covid is tough, but this is just no.
DOCTOR west ( don't ever call him professor) actually sucks. Worst math professor I've ever taken. His exams feel like brand new material because he won't actually teach the same stuff. This is that class that makes you want to cry to sleep. I got A's in cal 1 & 2 but feel worthless when watching his CRAZY LONG pointless lectures! AVOID HIM PLS!
Very unforgiving grader. No real help to students having difficulty with the material. Brutally difficult tests. Just avoid and take another professor.
HWs and quizzes are not representative of the exam. The recorded lectures are lackluster, long, and are best replaced with Youtubers like Khan Academy/Professor Leonard. Expect little care to issues faced during exams, he doesn't really care. Only pick this guy if you are confident in your ability to self-teach yourself. If not, pick elsewhere.
WORST DOCTOR EVER. He is not passionate about teaching. His lectures are heavy, confusing and difficult. This class is a waste of time and money. Quizzes and tests are difficult and he only gives one hour per test.
Honestly one of the worst professors I have had. He does not teach and his lectures and notes are useless. 60m for taking the exam and always tells students that they are cheating. Do not bother emailing him, it's very rare he will answer. Honestly, I would take my chances in an extra semester. Your GPA and mental health is not worth this class.
Horrible professor. He does not care about his students whatsoever. Blames the students for not working hard enough to get good grades when in reality the students reach out for help and receive none. I honestly do not recommend taking him unless you are excellent at teaching yourself material.
Hours of vague lecture every week, plus live sessions where he criticizes students for not doing good enough, plus lab sessions that take up more of my time. Assignments come quick, if youre not ahead hell say youre behind. He doesnt like answering questions.I wouldnt ask him for help because hed probably belittle me for not knowing.
lectures are too long and vague. Test questions are harder than the ones presented in quizzes and homework. Simple examples in lecture. Doesnt like answering questions. Will make you feel bad for not knowing. He spends his live lectures telling us how bad we are doing as a class. Wont see grades for assignments until weeks later.
Ya gotta practice and do homework outside the lecture. Calc 2 is a tough class, and always perpare for the worst on tests. Make sure you have integral calculator bookmarked on your browser as you will refer to it to help you solve hard problems. There is a lot of work in this class so perpare for the work load.
Examples from lecture do not come close to exams. Not clear or concise in explanation for examples in lecture. The class did dreadful on the first two exams so therefore, it's not a reflection on the teaching, but rather that the students are idiots.
Lectures don't help. Tests are way harder than they need to be. He assigns too much work. He doesn't care about his student, even after knowing everyone did bad on the tests, he chose to blame US for it. Time limit is tough on tests. Too long/vague/poor explanations during both live and recorded lectures. I can keep going. Trust me, don't take him.
James West, he's the best!
His prerecorded lectures do not help at all, neither do his live lectures. He blames students for not doing good enough .Also, he gets mad if you ask and make you feel dumb(he really does not like teaching). Also, too much formalities (must call him "DOCTOR"). Unless you want to be listening to a frustrated person every lecture, take him.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! He is very condescending towards his students and blames us for not learning the material well enough. His lectures are horrible and confusing. Even when the whole class is doing poor, he still blames it on us. I made an A in both CALC I and II and I might actually fail this class. It's best to take another professor.
this man is the most condescending prof ive ever met. he will make you feel stupid in office hours, and blames students for anything bad in the class. doesnt cover concepts well enough. expects you to have all the hw done well before the due date. also, halfway through the semester he reduced the time or quizzes but didnt change # of questions.
This man possesses astounding mental gymnastic abilities. He loves hearing his own voice talking, which is why he rambles for over half the duration of each lecture. He is disrespectful, pathetic, immature, cannot handle criticism about his assignments and tests, does not respond to complaints or questions and will ridicule you for asking questions
Please do not take this professor. His lectures do not help at all on anything, so you'll have to rely on outside sources to learn. Tests are hard and not represented by the homework and quizzes. He's also not very good at any accommodations if you have any sort of problem. Just do yourself a favor and take someone else if you have the option.
He definetly knows his material, however he is not the best at teaching the subject. His lecture videos are excessively long and it becomes difficult to grasp the concept with all the random information he throws. Also, he is very tough on grading free response questions. Not a bad professor, but take someone else if possible.
I took Calculus 3 with Dr. West online due to COVID. While the class is quite challenging, Dr. West does his best to provide the tools needed to do well. To do well it is important to keep up with the work, rather than wait until to due date to start. Make sure you understand concepts, not just how to do a single problem type!
Lectures ramble on and do not include relevant information for the tests, homework, or quizzes. Not accommodating with anything involving COVID, technical difficulties, or other things of that nature. Complains about getting emails and questions and emails over the weekend when that is when the majority of tests and assignments are due.
His class was asynchronous, but he still had live lectures at a random time where he rants about how horrible the students are for 2/3 of it for not doing homework a week early, doing badly on his off-topic tests, or saying prof > dr. Participation grade because not allowed to say attendance. Doesn't answer emails. Take this class if you're a mat.
Personally, I started this class dreading the difficulty I was about to endure, however Dr. West is very detail oriented and organized. Explains the concepts in detail and covers the special cases you might encounter. If youre willing to put in the work, then hell do everything in his power to help you succeed.
super rude and annoying during every live lecture. doesn't like being asked questions. exams are nothing like the practice tests and are way too long. extremely condescending for no reason. glad this class is almost over. worst professor I have ever taken I am over him.
As per the trend shown below DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR WEST *Doctor
worst math professor i've had so far.
He is not the best professor and always accuses students of cheating. Very condescending and unwilling to reason with students. During COVID, he gave a lot of HW and was really rude and not understanding whatsoever. I would not recommend taking him.
This professor is the perfect example of a professor who is genuinely bad at teaching. He's good at organizing the materials, updates, uploading lectures, etc. However, he is a really bad teacher and his lectures do not prepare the student for the exams well. He fails at explaining the fundamentals of the topics and just wants to do examples.
Hes absolutely horrible. Honestly should be fired from the way he treats the students and how little he cares. Worst professor yet Ive ever had
Most people in this class have done fairly well in Calc 1 and 2, so were not bad student for him to blame all the failure on us. Not only does he blame the students for poor performances, but he just doesnt care about our concerns. Prof West, you are the problem, not us. Online makes things harder already, and you chose to make things even worse
not caring for students during a pandemic is unacceptable.
I honestly think some of these positive reviews are fake, or are written by himself and his TAs. I honestly cant think of one good thing to say about him. Hes that bad. Not just the worst math professor, but just the absolute sort teacher Ive ever had. Middle school teachers are better than this guy smh
I am not even mad about the amount of homework or quizzes because that stuff is expected in math classes. My biggest complain is how ineffective his lectures are. The fact that the entire class scored terribly on all the tests should be enough proof about the professor's teaching. Quizzes and practice exams do not prepare well for the tests either.
I did pretty well in Calc 1 and 2 but no where close in this class. This professor does a pretty bad job at teaching especially online. This course is very homework and quiz intensive as well as time consuming due to very long lecture videos (at least online). I wouldn't mind all the work if the teaching was effective, however it isn't.
There's A LOT of weekly work, but my main issue is that when my grandmother passed away and I provided a letter from the funeral home as proof, he would not give me any extensions. He's not lenient in any way, even for university excused reasons.
Dr. West was an extremely great professor for Calc 1 and 2 but online Calc 3 was a whole different story. The test review and practice test would only cover half only half of the test. Live lectures constantly consisted him berating students for being lazy and not putting enough work in. To summarize, Calc 3 is a hard course but West made it worse
West simply showed that he did not care during the pandemic. Getting onto students for not doing their quizzes days before they were due, moving the practice tests to show who is "paying attention and who really cares", and the treatment of students, in general, showed that he didn't care. The material itself is hard, but he made it worse.
My main problem isnt the work load, which is a lot btw. Its how little he cared about us. Even after half the people failed the tests, he didnt do anything. He was just like, try harder. Which sucks cause tests were way harder than they needed to be, ESP with FRQs and harsh grading. Test material looks nothing like class stuff or precise stuff
Avoid at all costs. West was beyond apathetic in all aspects. On a Monday, he would be angry if most students didn't already watch all the recorded lectures for that week. He's unapproachable and constantly blames students for the majority of the class failing. Tests look nothing like reviews or practice. I've never stressed so much over a class.
Hes the best at being the worst lol
Just really bad at calculus 3, take this class online or find somewhere else to take it than UH. UH is not the place to take it, especially with this bad teacher. And I dont like to be mean when calling people bad at something they obliviously teach but for him its just obvious. The test are nothing like reviews so its hard to achieve an A, SADLY.
I would recommend a different professor. Unless he suddenly curves the final grades and many people actually pass with a decent grade, which hasnt been happening btw, my rating will stay the same. Cause half the class failed the tests and he didnt even care. He just blamed us for everything. Not understanding, tough tests, bad lectures, etc etc
My problem was how little this professor cared for students and kept blaming US for not understanding his lectures. He knows what he's talking about, but either overexplains or underexplains. Even if you try to email him or schedule separate office hours he won't look at it so don't bother. Tests don't reflect practice, quizzes, or reviews either.
Hard tests, lots of assignments, low key kinda rude. The only reason why Im giving a high score is because he decided to give a ton of extra credit at the end and I think he curved. Really came in clutch after such a difficult semester. It seemed like he didnt care about us, but Im glad he clutched at the end and was considerate
Everyone was doing so poorly on the tests and he wasnt doing much about it. And we al thought we were screwed. But he curved everything and put a ton of extra credit at the end and realllyy helped us out. It was nice of him to do. I just wish we knew he was curving so it would be less stressful. Since we didnt know that we all woried/struggled
Tough class, many assignments, time consuming, and many of us struggled and were scared about the final grades. But I guess he curved it at the end and Im sooo glad he did. Really helped with that and all the extra credit stuff. This ending ig is y I rated him so high. The semester was tuff, but glad he was understanding towards the end
I think hes like a 3, cause class was tougher than it needed to be imo. But hes goated because in the end of the semester he gave extra points. He really gave a lot of opportunities to improve the grade (at the end not really during the semester) which was such a relief. With these points and curve, I no longer mind the tough tests and the hw
I wrote a bad review earlier about him not caring about us and such, but I take it back. In the semester it didnt seem like he was understanding and didnt seem like he cared at all, but guess I was wrong cause he helped everyone at the end with extra points and even curved it somehow, or lowered the cutoff or something. And I Passed
I think he didnt tell about extra credit/ possible curves cause some students may not try as hard. Ngl it did cause some stress but glad he helped out with that in the end. Tough tests, lots of hw. Tho I didnt exactly enjoy the course too much bc of the tests/work, Im glad to see he was more caring/understanding than I initially thought
I thought he didnt care about us or our worries, but ig we were wrong in the end. Looking back, tho I didnt enjoy the course cause of tests/work, but he did more than I initially saw. Lots of resources available, live/recorded lectures, tutoring. Emails were a bit tough to get through but probably since he teaches multiple courses. Good choice
Its like the Thanos meme where its like perhaps I treated you too harshly cause I think he eased up on us at the end with the extra points and stuff, especially since over half the class did poorly on tests and struggled throughout the semester.
Dr. West wants you to succeed; he just expects you to reciprocate the effort he puts forth. The structure of his class was pretty organized, and he always encouraged questions in the live sessions. His lectures were fantastic and he uses tools like geogebra to help with visualizing in 3D space. Doing HW and asking questions early helps a ton.
Does not care about his students at all.
Look at the dates of the previous reviews. Notice how the best reviews happen after the final exam (past Dec 22) and the worst reviews happen when leading up to the final. Students in this class care more about their grades than they do respecting Dr. West as a professor. Please acknowledge that Calc 3 is a challenging class to learn and to teach.
James West is the best. Any bad report didn't put in effort to learn. James West carries calculus for UH and creates easy to use notes that the other professors use from him. His notes are useful and he does not assign that much work.
James West is the best. Hands down.
James west is THE best calculus teacher.
James West's notes are super helpful and his lectures make me understand calculus.
In all my 4 yrs of study, I never meet such an arrogant and uncaring teacher. He had little to say when 60%+ of his students fail his second exam. He claims learning Calculus requires pain! Expect to take 2 quizzes and lots of homework every week. It's also mandatory to attend 7hrs of labs, help sessions, and prerecorded lectures every week!
He's a good professor. Most people don't put in work or math isn't their strong suit. You get lots of homework, many pop questions (due at certain dates, 5 per chapter, found in recorded lectures), relatively difficult tests, which seems to all come from the department and not him. Not quite a class you can wing, he teaches good to my liking.
very rude, gives out triple the work of other teachers teaching the same course and consistently has lower-class averages throughout all his exams. it is an asynchronous class, however, he has 4 live meetings a week, which overlapped with my other classes, forcing me to play catch-up the entirety of the semester because I couldn't attend
He is the worst . DO NOT take him.
James Weber is the best teacher ever. Whenever I was confused he would help. Lectures were organized and he was reliable. I cannot recommend Dr. Thomas West more highly.
Dr. West is a solid choice for Cal 2 & 3. I had him for Cal 2 and I got an A and am on track to get another A in Cal 3. He understands the topics very well and goes into detail on his live sessions and in his lectures. If you can't make it to the live sections, he does record it and I highly recommend putting in any questions you have for him there
I have taken the course online this spring semester. I do not come from a strong math background and his classes and live lecture sessions were unhelpful. Practice tests were nothing like the real test and unless you know Calc 2 like the back of your hand you will fail. Do not take this class. Your GPA will suffer.
Professor West shouldn't be a professor. Students can't get a hold of him by email to save their lives, he is monotone and almost angry when lecturing, and he doesn't follow his syllabus. A classmate of mine was in a devastating car crash and missed a test, which Dr. West should have been understanding of with his syllabus. He was not. Do not take.
Though it's online, participation matters, 7%. And nobody was clear how he graded our participation section. SUPER heavy workload, 2x more than others teaching the same course. But he is very organized, an excellent Instructor. He is the best choice for those who love Math. For those who must take it for credit, consider other options if you have.
Assumes his students have a perfect life: no job, no other classes, no emergencies at all, so he expects you to make your entire life revolve around his class; DOES NOT drop any grades at all Weekly workload is A LOT Over explains a lot of the contentconfusing He doesn't have a monotone voice so lectures are okay. He's like this in all his classes
I think he was an ok professor for summer but be warned that this class will require crtical thinking compared to other professors. West really makes you work for your grade and understanding of calc rather than here's the method and execute like in previous math classes. his lectures were decent but I would prefer if he went over one hard example
So far, I have breezed through every homework assignment and quiz averaging around a 92 for these assignments. I never had to look at my notes, everything made sense to me and then I gook the test. I dont understand why it was so hard, but I got a 33. The average was a 40something, and 75% of people failed. If youre signing up for classes AVOID.
Professor West made the subject of Calculus pretty hard to understand. If it weren't for outside sources on YouTube (Thank you to Professor Leonard and The Organic Chem Tutor) this class would be impossible. Class averages for majority of exams fall below a 40. You should probably want to look for other professors if you want to learn Calculus.
I took this class online and as a super senior I definitely slacked off and did not keep up with the lectures so thats on me. There is a lot of quizzes and HW and poppers, but as long as you keep up with the lectures, I'm sure you'd do fine. I personally do not like the way he explains things, overcomplicates it so I suggest other videos.
Honestly, Dr. West is a decent professor. I don't understand why there are so many bad reviews. His lectures are informative and he goes over many practice problems. He explains the use of R quite well, I learned all the codes for test 1 in a day thanks to his tutorials. The class is VRY test heavy, only 2 midterms & the final. Study for the exams!
Dr. West does not care about his students. He acts as if the world stops moving for calculus. He is one of the most inconsiderate, uncaring professors Ive had the University of Houston. He does not like to listen to what you have to say, he only likes to know he is right. Do not take this professor if you want a good grade.
he's a good prof but he assigned way too much work and read straight off his lecture slides. his exams are okay if you study. he doesn't reply to emails. isn't very understanding of personal issues. you definitely have to keep up with his lectures every day to do your assignments and practice to grasp concepts.
He gives an unnecessary amount of work that doesn't even reflect whats on the test. The FRQ sections were always ridiculously hard. He also acts really condescending sometimes and doesn't respond to emails. If you wanna have an easier time take another professor. Only saving grace was the extra points from the practice tests.
Great Professor. The class is basedmainly on the lectures and note-taking. If you don't understand something you can ask questions in the help sessions. Overall, it is a great class once you get the concepts down and practice.
He gud.
Professor. West is very rude and condescending, another review that I completely agree with stated that he expects you to have a perfect life, meaning no emergencies, no job, and that your life revolves around his class. He makes concepts so much harder to understand and I would highly reccomend staying away from his class.
Very complicated explanations of course content, difficult class if it's been a semester or 2 since you last took a calculus class. I felt like he expected you to just know and understand the information right off the bat. If you are like me where you need to understand info thoroughly, he won't be the best teacher for you.
This guy sucks at explaining anything. Where did he even get his math degree?
Dr. West is one absolute joke of a rude, condescending, and belittling Professor. Contrary to what others say there is absolutely no curve despite the avg's being around 40. West will NEVER reply to any email despite requiring a laundry list of things to include in the subject line and body. The FRQs and homework will drive you insane. STAY AWAY!
If you value your grade do not take this professor!
Stay away to save your GPA.
This professor is horrible. If you want to keep your GPA its best to stay away from this man and wait for Prof May or Prof Irina to teach Calculus. There's not enough characters on RMP that would allow me to explain why he's horrible. Lets just say his class average on all tests is below 50% and he openly blames his students for being dumb.
RUDE. I emailed him during midterms b/c I was concerned about all the work he had left during exam week (I mentioned that we had other exams to study for too) and he announced my email to the entire class bringing up how I probably couldnt handle the course and that my grades were a reflection of that. I never felt more embarrassed.
The amount of material was sufficient for the course. If you know how to do the assigned homework and quizzes as well as the optional reviews you should do fine on the tests. The review sessions he held for each test helped me grasp the material I didn't know heading into test week.
I took calculus II over the winter mini with Dr. West and he was great. The lectures were clear and simple and he was also funny with dry humor. He's very matter of fact which seems mean, but it was refreshing. The class was a lot of work with multiple daily quizzes and lectures, but it prepared me very well and I feel like I actually learned.
He is a very good professor. He might be a bit condescending, but he really explains the material well and he does want everyone to pass. Very funny too.
Goes by a confusing point-grade system. Good luck calculating your standing grade at any point in the semester. Unrealistic amount of workload. No grades are dropped. No extra credit. He seems to be the kind of professor that prides themselves on failing students. Visit Cougar Grades io for more relevant information on this "professor".
Terrible Teacher, one of the worst professors I have ever taken, he does not take the time to explain, his lectures are copied and pasted textbook inserts, doesn't reply to messages asking for help seeing as this was an online class, you were set up for failure from the beginning.
Terrible professor. Everything stated in previous reviews are accurate. Wish I would have read this before ruining my GPA. PLEASE AVOID !!!!!!
has 3 hour lecture videos and barely explains what is going on, puts lecture pops in them. You cannot make up any tests, the only way you can is your final will drop your lowest test grade. Does not communicate well, I emailed him twice to talk about making up a test and he did not respond. Your GPA will drop do not take him!!!!!
Do not take this class your GPA will tank, you cannot make up any test at all. The only chance is your final will replace your lowest test grade, he posts 1-3 hour lecture videos where he does not explain anything that he is doing. He does not communicate at all I sent him two emails making up my test and he didnt even respond. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
I took this class online and did surprisingly well, but it's a lot of work regardless. He sometimes skips steps or doesn't explain something in its entirety but overall he's not terrible and I highly recommend taking good notes. I wouldn't bother asking/emailing him questions so just look at youtube videos and if you miss a test there's no leniency
Dr. West is very to the point which makes him seem rude, but his lectures were good and I understood everything. A lot of assignments and 2 midterms + final for grades. Keep up with lectures and attend the online meetings for help.
I honestly do not like this man, he is so rude and he only thinks about himself and not the students. Why be a professor if you're just going to have a bad attitude towards people who genuinely want to learn and pass this course??????? And he does not know how to teach, test are in-person, and practice tests are barely similar to the actual test...
videos are 1-1.5 hours + exams are in person, 2 quizzes and 1 homework every week. you really do have to study to do well in the class. practice tests are similar to the exams. he sounds annoyed during live sessions but if u attend regularly and ask questions hes more patient with you. he would sometimes take shortcuts that werent clear sometimes.
I took Professor West for Calculus 3 asynchronous. I do not recommend this professor, a lot of homework every week, did not post an exam review at all. Exams were hard to study for since he gave no resources. FRQs took over a month to be graded at times and he did not post grades until the very last minute they were due.Rude when contacted by email
I do not recommend this professor, it seems like he doesn't care about students learning but himself. The online textbook helped me out more than him. Many struggled during this course, I don't recommend him at all! #saveyourgpa. He always gave students an attitude and takes forever to put in grades. It was hell dealing with this professor like fr
This professor is a bit rude and gives abrupt responses. I have scored amazing in all my other calculus classes because i had taken different professors. He does not give partial credit in his free response questions at all. The practice are extremely easy whereas the actual papers are very diff. The lectures dont always cover the exams
Pace of this class is insane. Covers 4 sections/week. Expect 2 lecture videos, 2 TA Sessions, 1 Professor Session, 2 quizzes, 1 multiple choice hw, 1 written hw, and 2 lecture pops a week. Expect to put in around 10 hours minimum a week just to pass by. I recommend getting as far ahead as you can and asking as many questions to your TA as you can.
This class was easy to keep up with since Dr. West gave enough time to work on the quizzes and homeworks, but make sure to understand them. I found it easy to fall behind on lectures but at the same time it was easy to catch up. I found the lectures boring to watch so I just put them on 2x speed lol.
There was a very big difference in taking MATH2415 with Dr West and MATH3321. The gradinf criteria and point system in this class is terrible I didn't know exactly what my grade was in the class until I checked the grade center half an hour before grades were due. Don't tale him for MATH3321 take any other prof. no extra credit, no dropped grades
I'm a terrible math student & had a really difficult time in this class. Idk how he is in person but my online experience was terrible. I found his lectures, homework & exams to be extremely difficult. I did my best to utilize campus, course & outside resources to help me but it wasn't much help. Take this with a grain of salt though.
Ruined me for other Math professors! I literally compare others to him and find them lacking. West is organized and easy to understand. People trying to breeze through fail, so suck it up and put in the work. All that homework helps you learn. He's blunt but genuinely cares about student success- go to his office hours and trust he'll help you.
While the professor's teaching style didn't work for me, unstuck ai and other online resources helped a lot. Still, be prepared to put in serious effort to succeed in this class.
This dude is the epitome of "I didn't succeed in obtaining a job with my degree so I chose to become a professor instead, without having a single bone in my body filled with passion to teach." I hate his teaching style. I have always been an A+ student in calculus. Will update with my grade at the end of the year.
I had him for both calc 2 and calc 3 because he was my only option. His explanations of concepts are convoluted and hard to understand, I have a much easier time learning the same subjects outside of lectures from different sources. Only does extremely basic example problems in class and doesn't prepare us well for exams. Take literally anyone else
So about Dr. West, I feel like he's actually pretty misunderstood among many students in this university. I view him as being pretty fundamental about the course. Calulus III here is actually more like Algebra 5 in my opinion. The large amounts of homework though, is a huge issue as he did give us a 35 question homework the other day.
He is not misunderstood, he is detached from reality. He has always lived in his own bubble, look at his linkden profile. He would be a good YouTuber for math but as a professor he cuts corners. Takes forever to grade MONTHS actually. If you want more for yourself beyond being a UH student I suggest taking someone else. West will drag you down.
Take a different math class if you don't need this course or have other options available. This class is a massive time sink to the point where it's hard to focus on your other classes or life. Avoid like the plague.
This class in general is very difficult and time consuming. It also doesn't help that Professor West is in a hurry to finish the notes and goes on occasional tangents. He uploads the lectures, but not completed notes. Avoid this class as much as possible and if there is an alternative course take that one to save your gpa, time and sanity.
This is the hardest calculus imo because of it dealing with 3 dimensions. Dr. West also has a way of making the concepts super difficult to understand. I stopped attending lectures and watched youtube videos on Calc 3 because he made everything so hard to follow and understand. And no he is not misunderstood he is just not a good professor.
40-50 total problems between HWs and quiz alone WEEKLY. Doesn't drop any grades. Weird point system makes it impossible to determine your grade. Attendance is part of grade. Lectures are too fast and he makes concepts hard to understand. Gives unrealistic amount of time on exams and grades exams harshly. Avoid at all cost if possible!!!!
I created an account just to write a review. WAY too much homework. Incredibly condescending tone and mannerisms. Concepts are poorly taught - Be ready for a Chegg subscription. HW and quizzes are wayyy more in depth than lectures and go FAR beyond the scope of the concept you need to know for the test. Avoid at all costs.
The people complaining are just lazy. Math is cumulative, & it's not the fault of West that you forgot the prereqs. He shows genuine care if ask for help during office hours. Class is organized, lectures are clear + easy to follow. Exams aren't hard and no trick questions. Homework every week though. Class is a little surface level & not rigorous.
He moves quickly because the class is very large. You will learn better whenever the TA goes over it in lab so don't skip the lab. He offer 5 points extra credit for every test if you get a 100 on the practice exam. He will replace the lowest test score with the grade of you final exam. Don't leave any points on the table.
Serious, but chill, dude. Getting an A is possible, just get ready to put in a lot of effort, even if you consider yourself above average in math. 2 exams and 1 final sound good on paper, but new content not previously tested on will show up in the final, so expect that ig. HW is manageable but time-consuming if you get caught slacking.
I got A+'s in Cal I & II at CC. I was not expecting the fast-paced change. Super time consuming homework, quizzes, etc. Do not get caught slacking, not even for a day. The examples he goes over in class are simple compared to what shows up on homework and quizzes. I was humbled on exams 1 and 2. I'd prob take him again. I bounced back on the final!
It was an easy class since almost all the questions in the quizzes/tests in CCS were similar to the math problems in the recorded lecture videos. Most students misunderstand the teacher, & obviously, it's not the teacher's fault for them not knowing the necessary concepts from prior math courses required to solve the problems in this class.
I was told about Pr. West as a very bad professor before cal 3, however after taking him, I can honestly say it was understandable on how his tests are covered. Meaning you may think you understand and study everything just to be humbled on his exams, mainly test 1! However Test 2 and final are easier with outside help and study adjustments.
I got an A in Calc I with a different professor so I thought I was fine taking a minimester, but that was the worst decision I have ever made. The first day of class he told us we had to eat, sleep, and breathe calculus. I didn't leave the house days at a time and still didn't pass. The exams were much harder than any textbook problems. DONT TAKE!!
Not accessible. He's snappy and gets bothered that after one example you don't understand. Notes are vague and expects you to figure it out after one walk-through. He only teaches online because it's easier than facing the students he couldn't teach properly. For reference, I had A's in Calc 1 and 2.
Dr. West is not going to be your best friend, in fact he's pretty rude, but he is a great professor. He gives great examples in lecture and the test reviews are good practice for exams. He records lectures and allows for questions to be submitted for review before exams. Go into the class with an open mind and be prepared to put in the work.
Lecture ex. are very simplified compared to assignment problems. Way too quick when going through the lecture and assumes everyone can write and understand with the pace he goes over questions. He uploads blank notes to fill out, however he doesn't provide enough space so you'll be finding yourself writing on the edges. Had high A's in Calc 1 and 2
Compared to other teachers, this teacher gives a lot of homework, the lectures are around 50- 90 minutes long, sometimes even going as to nearly 2 hours long. His lectures are not helpful as he only covers the easiest topics, and on the quizzes, homework, written homework, and popper quizzes, they are much harder examples.
At first, I thought Dr. West's class was too fast and unfair, but I realized his grading is generous—he drops assignments, offers extra credit, and replaces low exam scores with the final. I skipped labs, but he gave alternate poppers that increased the lab quiz grade. The class takes effort—don't blame him, blame your work ethic.
Professor West was eloquent with topics covered, allowing students to understand them fundamentally during lectures. His curt and no-nonsense attitude fed into a very clear and precise manner of teaching. Homework is comparable to other STEM classes, so just pay attention in lectures and be prepared to study *some* of the material on your own.
Can't speak on the things I've heard about him as a Cal 3 professor, but for Engineering math (3321) his lectures were comprehensive and he would take the time and effort many times to show proofs and how formulas were derived. I found him to be a very effective instructor.
On everything I love please stay away from this man. To those who say he's not that bad for calc 3 are d1 glazers or out right sped. James West will make you hate calc for the rest of your life. The amount of hours and hard work I had to put in just to get an A is ridiculous I found Calc 2 easier than Calc 3 that's how bad James west it.
West is the definition of busy work. An average week consists of 1-2 hws, 2 quizzes, and 2 1.5 hour labs with quizzes. The material itself has its highs and lows similar to calc 1 & 2, but is passable with lots of studying. TAs were hard to understand, and they rarely communicated with West, who saw them more as his workers rather than assistants.
Okay professor. Lecture notes were good enough to understand material. MC questions on midterms were almost identical to practice tests given, make sure to go over them multiple times. Weird point system where you do not know what exactly your final grade will be. Professor is rude in emails but straightforward.
I liked his lectures and slides, they were really straight forward and always similar to the homework, quizzes, and tests. Outside of office hours, he also held an extra meeting online for class announcements and students who needed help. Not as bad as everyone says he is, I enjoyed his class.
For Calc 3, it seemed that Dr. West didn't want to be teaching and was often very short with students and didn't want to answer questions. There is homework every week and about 2 quizzes every week. These are relatively easy compared to tests. The tests are difficult, but he does give bonus points. I would take someone else.
Course load is quite heavy with Dr. West. Expect two lectures, two homeworks, and one quiz a week. He gives no more and no less than what is needed. Explanation of concepts are a bit convoluted, but the lecture example problems are straight forward and are the types that will be on quizzes and exams. Plus, bonus points are offered on every exam.
Dr. West is a professional in the highest sense of the word. He teaches with a rigor and precision that is uncommon in lecture settings today. He knows the material well and is able to communicate it very clearly and in multiple different ways. He was able to respond to every question asked during his lectures in a competent and coherent way.
While I personally don't believe that James West is the best teacher (very little time is spent on helping students conceptually or intuitively understand material), looking back on the course, he is extrremely fair and offers many avenues for bumping up your grade that I believe make up for that.
He wastes a lot of time at the beginning of the class, which leaves him with little time to cover the material, which he ends up rushing. I honestly would've taken any other professor, but he was the only option I had this semester.
Dr. West delivered the material very well. I thought he was very competent and fair when it came to his tests.
I'm not even Christian but Jesus. You have 3 different assignments every week on top of the lab quiz, tests are in casa so goodluck. His lectures are EXTREMELY fast paced, you wont even be able to take notes so if ur not the flash i dont recommend taking him.
He has a bit of an attitude, but other than that, I thought he was a very good lecturer. He does a good job breaking down complex concepts. This course is very work heavy, so be prepared to spend time doing homework.
He did a good job explaining concepts and his lectures were easy to follow. My complaints are the workload was too heavy, and he was hard grader for the test.
Took this class async. Pre recorded lectures were a bit hard to understand. Expect EMCFs and HWs due at the same time every week. No exam reviews unlike other calc profs. Overall class is not too difficult, just do practice test over and over again.
