Great professor! Tries to make things as clear as possible. You can tell he cares about how well his students understand the material. He uses overheads to draw structures which is helpful and he posts everything he writes!! Class still requires some work, but it's not that bad at all.
He can definitely be pretentious to the point where he won't help you, so watch out!
whitesell's tests are pretty easy on the whole. he takes the questions straight from hw problems and puts his lecture notes online along w/ the audio, but if you don't know what he's talking about, it's difficult to understand. i suggest going to lecture as often as possible.
This is the easiest teacher. All of his problems form the first two midterms were all exactly from the book..EXACTLY. and the final took half of the questions straight from the other midterms...hes a good teacher ..he always says random interesting facts throughut his lectures
I think that Whitesell means well. Yet, doesn't explain material as well as he could in or out of class. Tests are representative and fairly simple if you've studied b/c he uses homework problems.
Nice guy but impossible exams.
His test was just like the homework, and show up to class because he would give hints to what problems were on the midterm. The final had a couple of major problems pulled from the midterms. Overall a really good teacher i enjoyed him and really hoped he would be teaching 140B.
this class is a joke....those guys who said it was hard must be the most retared people. MOst of his problems...literally like 70% are from the book..the ones he assigned and he only assigns like 10 problems a chapter..its a joke i never went to class...these guys are idiots..if u cant get an A in his class have fun with the 140 b and 140C teachers
I was scared of OChem until I took this class. His tests are 70% homework, plus he gives lots of hints. Do the reading and keep up. The key to this class is understanding, material builds upon itself. Best teacher at UCSD.
he is by far the most helpful professor at UCSD. he provides audio recording and lecture notes online. His exams were extremly fair because hints are given. Do assigned HW, read book, and understand lecture and it should be an easy A
he is sooo...random, the exams are random and he is kinda mean about regrades and he will take points off. He won't give them to you if he gets annoyed.
after taking him, I felt sooo....screwed over for 140B and it turns out I was right. He doesn't really teach you what you need to know for 140B and C. In 140 B I was totally clueless about what was going on which really screwed me over. I recomend taking a teacher who will actually teach you the material so when you get to 140B it will be easy.
Good guy. Fair as hell. If you do what he says, you get the grade and the knowledge. Just be careful and despite the easiness, don't take the class too lightly cuz the avg is high. Just pay attention.
His class is supposedly the easiest Chem140A class, because he teaches you just what he wants you to know. I got an A in the class by studying his lectures, doing the assigned homework problems, and working out the practice midterms.
Lectures are not too easy to follow. Midterms and final are pretty easy, b/c he takes questions directly from the homework that he assigns and puts them on the midterms.
almost insultingly easy. may need to put extra effort into 140b and 140c because there are holes. listen to your TA, they will fill in the gaps that he makes.
Whitesell is ok. He records his lecture puts them online as well as lecture notes & has a discussion board but i think its all so he doesnt have to help you if you ask a question. he just says refer to lecture online etc.Midterms piece of cake, final is killer, only teaches what he wants you to know...im just glad its over!
The key to this class is good notes and homework. Having great notes minimizes the reading time and therefore more time to practice problems. Do all the problems he assigns. Make sure to get an organic chemistry drafting template to help you take notes faster especially when learning the chair conformation. I got it at www.ochemplate.com
He's a really nice guy. But the averages in his class are pretty high, so don't bet on a curve. Relatively easier than other professors.
this prof gives you easy A for 140A but you have to study hard for MCAT and B and C...Do homework, attend the lectures and you will be fine. Final is homework and previous midterms basically.
Extremely easy class! If you can't get an A then good luck with upper-division bio/ochem classes, doesn't get much easier than this.
I took the class for an easy A, missed it by 4 points- if this happens to you often then expect it happen to you again, regrades are a joke- he really won't look at them at all. You make one tiny mistake on a question then minus 10 points on that one and your are at a 90/100. NO CURVE NONE, and no B+, watch out this is a fair warning to all
He provides resources such as recording for his lecture and notes online. Do all the assigned HW. because 60% shows up on the midterms/final and the rest is from his notes. I also found that the ochemplate helped for learning to draw chair conformation and its proper orientation. I got an A by doing hw work and listening to his lectures online.
He is quite easy compared to other professors. Remember the pKa of water. I had a copy of the midterm from the previous year, and 95% was exactly the same when I took it. In short, he's an easy professor who recylcles questions, but you end up suffering in 140B.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! YOU WILL LEARN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Most of the people that I know took him and got B's in his class and ended up getting D's in 140b. He puts you at a huge disadvantage for 140b and its a hole that will be extremely difficult to climb out of. Doesn't prepare you well at all.
He recycle the tests. Class is easy, but no curve, so if u make little stupid mistake u r pretty much done.
Easy professor who recycles his old tests. Just get copies of his old midterms and finals, and memorize them. I would not recommend him overall tho, doesn't really teach at the difficulty he should and seemed kind of pissed off when responding to students on his message boards.
This class is either a Hit or Miss. You either get that A or you miss it. Good luck with him.
Very straight forward professor. He is easy but it gives you the freedom to learn the reaction very earlier and to start memorizing them. def do the HW and use the ScienceAide reaction tables from the UCSD bookstore to learn reaction for the final
Horrible professor. If you want to learn anything, avoid him. Horrible lecturer, doesn't explain anything well at all (even TAs agree). Just get copies of his old tests, reuses questions but throws new ones in too. You'll come out of the class knowing nothing though.
horrible professor. learned everything on my own. should have transferred out of the class when i had the chance.
He doesn't show any interest in you or care about you. Horrible professor. Did not attend lectures and learned everything from the textbook and by going to Ternansky's lectures. Should've switched out when I had the chance, prolly would've gotten a better grade in Dr Bob's class, too... *sigh*
By far the worse teacher at UCSD no freakin curve..Mad that everyone in the class has cheated..Go to a better teacher that will actually teach the class. No use in the book u have a high chance of failing due to unfair people RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.
He is the worst teacher ever... you can not follow his lectures and they are useless, just do home works and you'll be fine for midterms. final is hard and 50% of your overall grade. his curve is stupid. do not take the class with him.
Whitesell is a good professor. His midterms aren't too hard, it is written in a fair manner with most of the material from his lectures. Take advantage of his office hours to clarify concepts and questions, it helped me a lot.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. It is impossible to follow him in lecture, the TAs saved my life. After each midterm he spends the next class going through each problem and basically telling us how stupid we are for not getting the right answer. He can't answer a question simply, he will go out of his way to make you feel unintelligent.
does anyone know his past grading distribution?
Horrible teacher. Took him for for A, received a low grade and thought I could do better in B, Wrong. He is not helpful, picks ridiculous questions he mentioned for 3 sec in lecture for exams. You can't even try and be nice to him because he still finds ways to condescend you. You don't learn.
Whitesell sucks at teaching and he does not give out ?+? and ??,? thereby hurting those who are supposed to get B+ and C+. There is no point in having an easy professor if you cannot learn. Whitesell does not cover the material well and his lectures are confusing. He belittles you when you try to get help. Do not take this professor for any class!!
WARNING- do not take his class! He is a horrible teacher and you won't learn a thing. If you want to succeed and understand Ochem take someone else, otherwise you'll have to learn/understand the material on your own.
He is a good professor and I definitely recommend going to class. His tests aren't based on old exams, maybe they were at one time, but now are based mostly on lecture examples. He breaks the subject down and teaches at a slower pace. Good teacher!
My experience in this class was very positive. He was very clear about what was going to be on exams and as long as you make flashcards of EVERY reaction he writes in lecture you will be fine. I did memorize a huge stack of notecards but this is OCHEM! What I liked about his course is that you always knew what to expect from the exams.no tricks!
Really liked this professor. He is very helpful, and explains things well. Warning: Tests are NOT based on old tests anymore. But still, very nice and helpful. Would take him again in a second!
Objectives are crystal clear. His lecture style was great--despite an 8 am class, I was kept awake and interested. Exams are straight-forward and reflect lecture material, particularly when he says things like "THIS WILL BE ON THE EXAM." If weirdo chemical theory from outer space coupled with self-esteem diminishing exams is your bag, DONT TAKE
i hated his class. i felt lost throughout the entire thing. his lectures are not clear; and like previously stated the only person that helped me even pass the class was my TA. if you ask me SHE should be teaching the class. i went to EVERY LECTURE and the only things that helped me were previous exams and discussions.
Definitely the worst professor I've taken at UCSD. He doesn't give +'s or -'s. Also, his tests are unclear and he'll grade you on what he meant to ask, not what he asked. He's easy to follow if you're slow, but if you have any sort of intelligence, the class is super boring and the tests are based on if you can pay attention in class (you can't).
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had! You are better off just studying on your own from the text instead of trying to learn from his lectures!
He said if you use podcast lectures, it will be just like being in the class. he said it is OK to stay at home as long as u listen to podcast regularly. but then, he accuses people abt not coming to the class. he covers the microphone so that ppl at home wouldnt get information. I dont know why he pretended to be so cool about podcast users
I really don't think he's so bad if chemistry isn't your primary interest. I have to take if as a bio major and this class is easy and good for my GPA. He also comes off as pretty hostile but I've found from going to his office hours that he is really nice and helpful. If you're interested in chem and want to learn, take someone else.
First of all, I really hated how he scheduled the second midterm the monday after thanksgiving break. But overall, Whitesell is NOT the teacher you want for ochem...he skips a lot of material in the book that you need for the other ochem series classes, and your tests really don't reflect how well you know ochem. He was pretty disappointing.
Doesn't post up the tests anymore. 50% of exam similar to previous tests. Exam reflects largely on notes; however, there might be 1 or 2 questions from homework. He is not very clear during his lecture, and covers his mike to punish people who do not go to lectures.
Exam material wasn't too dense compared to other 140A classes, making them easier, which mostly all of it comes from his lectures, including his examples. Lectures are on Podcast. Answers questions on WebCT discussions, but sometimes not clear/straightforward. Doing problems from the book helped a lot. Available after class.
I don't know why people hate him so much. I learned a lot and felt good after taking both 140A and 140B with him. He teaches you things relevant to your academic studies, not straight from the textbook, and the exams are really reflective of the lecture material. If you want easy classes, you shouldn't take ochem in the first place.
He teaches well, but not clear sometimes. Exams are directly, or sometimes indirectly from his lectures, since he wants you to think. He encourage people to actually attend his class. I like how he replies on WebCT and he is actually extremely nice. Homework are for references, since some of the homework he assigned are just not doable. Good overal
Honestly, he is horrible at explaining anything. Seriously lacks the ability to be able to present organic chemistry in a way that is comprehensible to students. If you're just starting organic chemistry, which is already a difficult experience as it is even with great teaching, don't take him. He'll leave you confused for the rest of the series.
Prof Whitesell does not present ochem in a very organized way and it makes it kind of hard to follow. I strongly recommend taking Oasis if you take his class. His exams are pretty easy and it is not necessary to attend class because everything is video podcasted! Although lectures are boring, he tells funny stories sometimes!
Worst professor to take for the OCHEM series. I regret taking him because I feel like I'm screwed for 140C... If you want that easy A, take him but not so lightly. He has some tricks up his sleeves. I can't stand his voice! His teaching method sucks, it's not easy to follow but based on his test, it's all you need to know to do well. AVOID!!!
Easily the worst professor on campus. Encourages students to NOT come to class. Doesn't explain WHY anything happens. This class is easy because his tests are recycled so it comes down to memorizing rather than learning, but you're hurting yourself in the future if you're planning on taking the DAT or MCAT b/c 140B is VERY important TRUST ME!!!!!!!
He is actually a really nice guy. Sure he's easy but some people don't need to learn that much about Ochem. Environmental Engineering for example only needs 140A. Everyone also deems him incapable of teaching but this man came from HARVARD, so I'm sure he's looking down upon us lol
He was a pretty easy teacher with straightforward tests as compared to the other ochem professors. However he's not good at teaching the material. Personally whenever I went to lectures I couldnt understand what he was saying... For both the midterms and final I relied heavily on the tas.
Really clear lectures and he videopodcasts, so attendence isn't mandatory. Easy midterms and a more challenging final. He posts past exam keys, which is really helpful. Just don't fall into the trap of not going to class and trying to cram all the podcasts in the weekend before the exams. I really liked the class and feel like I learned a lot.
This class was very easy in the beginning and gets progressively harder towards the end. The professor podcasts his lectures which is VERY helpful for review. His lectures were relevant to what he expected us to know on the exams. I had to put in a lot more time to study for this class but it paid off in the end. Great professor! Taking his 140B.
People that complain about Whitesell not teaching should really learn how to read their book and teach themselves. He tells us what sections to skip, he podcasts, answers questions promptly on TED, fair exams.. what more is there to ask for? I failed both exams.. aced the final and got an A in the class. My fault for bombing the first 2.
Easy A kind of. If you can remember all the random reactions he wrote in lecture, then you're guaranteed an A. Seriously his questions come straight from lecture and you'll probably see the same reactants and such. Just look up his podcasts. He doesn't really explain things well but that's what the book is for.
Hes a great guy who really wants you to learn!
Professor Whitesell is the most intelligent organic chemist on earth, and is Master genius of the art of pedagogy. He has an amazing ability to spellbind his audience with phenomenal lectures filled with vivid analogies permitting even the least talented student to firmly grasp the complexities of the subject. UCSD needs more professors like him.
Simply the best!
Professor Whitesell is who makes UCSD great!
I love Professor Whitesell and the truthfulness I can express here on Rate My Professors, the only truthful website in the Universe!
Professor Whitesell is the best teacher in the WHOLE WORLD and he's a really nice guy who loves ALL his students and gives us all As because he is such a nice guy and so smart and handsome and the best Professor in the WHOLE WORLD.
Professor Whitesell was anointed a Knight Tempar by the Queen of England because he is SOOOOOOO SMART!!!! He loves his students! Yeah1 I'm so lucky to be in his class! Woo woo!
He teaches us students everything we need to know to ace the class and get into Harvard med. He's the greatest.
Best prof ever
Follows the book perfectly.
Professor Whitesell is the Jim Carey of ochem. Reminds me of Santa Klaus without the beard or hair. Really knows his stuff. He's better than all the other profs cuz he says so. I love SantaW cuz he give us such super easy exams and lets us sleep through class. Why don't we have more UCSD profs like him? SantaW is the BEST.
easiest A i ever got
This guy is tooooo good! It's good people like him that make UCSD so reputable and amazing.
This guy is god! He is absolutely phenomenal in teaching bored, and lazy students about organic chemistry. Whitesell always tells us to believe in the you who believes in yourself, and with that we will be able to piece the heavens.
Professor Whitesell taught me so much ochem that all I can do is think about electrophiles going into benzene rings whenever I poke holes in my donuts for breakfast. I agree that we should dump the current book and replace it with Whitesells and was the first to sign the petition for his book to be the official book for the whole UC system.
Harvard graduate Professor James Whitesell, Ph.D. extraordinairre, is the most outstanding professor at UCSD. Being uniquely gifted, and using solely his superior intellect, he has ushered a dynamic pedagogical revolution at this up and coming university whose entire reputation is derived exclusively from Whitesell's genius. Nobel material.
Never went to class and didn't study and showed up jus for the exams and got an A going into this joke of a final. Easier than high school cuz Whitesell makes it so allya gotta do is put your name on a back test. Great prof for premeds everywhere!
Whitesell is best for a easy A but yA gOt tA tAkE hIm FoR eVeRy CoUrSe So yOu CaN pAsS. Doesnt care if you cheat so thats reel good. If ya got the back tests then ya got the midterms so ya know the answers before ya get to test. Best UCSD chem prof for that easy A specially if ya want it for just doing no work at all. Hes the man for chillin!
All of the great comments below do not do the Wonderful Whitesell...he is simply so good that words cannot describe his superb pedagogical skills. His most famous inspirational quotes to encourage students is to "Believe in the you who believes in yourself, and with that you can go pierce the heavens."
He taught me that when ochem seems tough, and you just feel like giving up, remember: Don't Lose Your Way.
Professor Whitesell was not an excellent professor. His class is definitely doable-in part because there is a curve. He glosses over topics he expects you to know thoroughly and he is really boring. He video podcasts classes so you don't have to go and his quizzes are easy. Its doable but you are kind of teaching yourself.
The most boring class I've ever had. I had trouble paying attention or following what he teaches in class. Don't take chem 140a with him if you care about actually understanding organic chemistry. He will not give you a strong ground for 140B. But, this is an easy A class for some people, not for me though.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. One of the worst professors I had at UCSD. Extremely confusing :(
I do NOT recommend this professor. He seemed clear in lecture, but didn't cover things near as thoroughly as other professors. His exams were difficult, and points for wrong answers were often SUBTRACTED from overall, instead of being given 0 points for a wrong problem. Take another professor!
If you want an easy A, take him because his midterms and final are basically based on his lectures and whatever he writes on the board. If you wanna understand the material and do well on subsequent classes or even the MCAT or DAT, then DO NOT!!!
If you actually need to understand chemistry or take future organic chemistry classes, you'll regret taking it with Whitesell. No "superior pedagogical intellect" here, just a lazy dude collecting a pay check.
First of all, don't bother going to class as all you need to do is skim the podcast he makes. Second, your TA and the book is your best friend because he will not teach you anything, period! Exams are recycled and take about 25 minutes to complete. The course material is great, though! Basically, you need to learn everything on your own. Avoid!
He's a terrible person. Easy A though.
He's actually a pretty nice guy, unlike what most of these comments here state. You will either like his class, or not (although 10% of people go to lecture, so what' the surprise when you do bad?). Pretty easy tests, just look at the lecture materials and past midterms; if he doesn't talk about it, don't worry about it.
This man is a living God. The people who hate on him are those who couldn't make it off the wait list. The best professor, by far.
If you're looking for an easy A, take him! If you wanna understand Ochem and have to take consecutive classes after, then don't!
