not sure about his 'easiness,' as we haven't handed anything in yet, so i just picked the middle number :P anyways, he's pretty cool. his lectures are interesting, and he's funny.
He's very eager to help his students. He incorporates many different resources into his lectures to keep students engaged. And he seems very fair and easy-going, although we haven't had anything marked yet.
One of the best professors at York. He's young and eager to teach his student about a subject he actually enjoys talking about. Always ready to help his student, and will respond to any of your question by e-mail in less than two hours. The last class before the exam, we took an hour just asking him any question we had, and he was always helpful.
He is very helpful and enjoys teaching this course. Also, keeps the lecture topics interesting
Prof. Williams is great! He's not bad to look at and always uses current media examples that people can relate too. I would work my schedule around him to have him for other classes.
Good prof, likes to teach his stuff, knows what he s talking about. His essay topics& exams arent hard-just gotta study, and it wont be too hard to get a good mark.
TA's suck in this course, but prof williams is awesome. He's soo nice and really helpful. He's so passionate about the topic and tries to make classes as interesting as possible.
Williams is bomb. He likes to teach and his lectures are actually exciting. He always has something cool to show us and he's fair, helpful and a little stud muffin. go williams go
AMAZING PROF. HIGHLY RECOMENDED. IF YOU DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO, ULL GET AN A, I DID, AND SO DID MANY OTHERS. GOOD JOB WILLIAMS. ONCE AGAIN HE IS AMAZING, TAKE HIM.
My favourite Prof, HANDS DOWN. I havent missed one lecture all year, they are so interesting and he is very approachable and an overall good prof. He made me love this course. The person above is right though, the TAs suck.
so passionate, love his teaching style. plus he's hot ;)
Awesome prof! He was very clear in his lectures and they were interesting! He also was very helpful and always involved the class. However my TA for the class were horrible (Joanna). She is unclear, rude, and wastes class time by showing you videos on physics?? Also I found her grading very unfair and she didn't respond to my emails about it.
My FAVOURITE prof to date. He is clear, orgainzed and very helpful. I loved going to his lectures and learned a lot from him. But as many have said before this the TA's for this class sucked big time (Blayne was horrible). But Williams was amazing so if you are looking at this to decide if you should take his class YOU SHOULD! :)
unbelievable prof, very clear, excellent lectures! the reason i am majoring in criminology. TA's suck, mainly cuz there isnt much to talk about for 2 hours, but they are easily approachable for extra help.
best prof I ever had. This man is amazing! His calm, amazing, smart character just inspires you to do more. It's too bad that he didn't teach the tutorials as well. I just hope he will still be in York for my fourth year :))
Very clear and precise. Easy to follow and take notes. I actually look forward to his lectures because he mixes it up with videos, articles, discussions, etc.
LOVE THIS PROF. he is amazing!!! so easy to follow his lectures! he always mixes current events with course material which is so helpful! he is funny and an overall nice person!!! if you are interested in crim try to get in his class! you will not regret it!!
hes an amazing prof..his lectures are very interesting... The only thing is that his multiple choice on the exams are IMPOSSIBLE!
this prof knows his stuff and he is very clear! Multiple choice questions on exam might be a little confusing but short answers are pretty easy!
Williams is absolutely amazing! my fave prof. hands down! i havnt missed one class all year. he is so clear and organized, you will never fall behind in his lectures! just go to class and pay attention and there is no way you will not get an A. as for the TAs, if you want a good one take Peter Kiatipis!
In love with him. Absolutely wonderful, charming, funny, and ever so sweet. His lectures are never boring and he uses a variety of mediums. TA was fantastic. He is fair in his tests and tries to be accomodating. I looked forward to his lecture and him. It was the only class I have had where the students applauded a professor on the final day.
One of the most amazing and intelligent Prof I have ever had.
One of the best Crim. Profs at York. Very clear, concise and engaging. Course material is interesting, I learned alot in this class. Always willing to help his students.
He's a really nice guy who loves to make jokes about trips to Honolulu and Hawai. His lectures are very clear and concise, and we watched really interesting movies that deals with the study of society and criminology. Great first year prof.
He thinks that we're supposed to know the things that he does- we don't have our phDs so there is no way we'd know the tiny little things he wants you to get. really hard to the point of brutal when marking written work, yet gives ppl that do presentations really good even if they're not that good. avoid having him in a seminar class
Very good, smetimes terms go over your head, bu thats what TA's are for. wouldnt change a thing about this course
Now that i just completed 2nd year criminology, its made me look back and realize how great professor williams is and how much he taught us and inspired his students in 1st year!...he is one of the greatest crim profs at york, by far! if you have his class, consider yourself blessed!
He is a great prof. By far one of the best I have had all year. He is very clear with all lectures and questions and has very good examples in each class. An awesome prof for an introductory crim course
He is my far the most amazing professor I have ever had! He is extremely helpful, clear, and an overall great teacher! Definitely LOVED his class!
Professor Williams is amazing! His lectures are very interesting and clear. I have learned a lot in this course. He is one of the best professors at York. I had the BEST TA Brigitte Cecckin, she is amazing and very helpful. With Brigitte you actually look forward to tutorial, she?s always available to meet with her students. This was my favou
I am now in 3rd year and looking back through the year's I have been at York, Professor Williams is the only professor who sticks out in my mind. I had him 2 years again for crim1650. If you are debating whether or not to take a class with him, definetely do it. He is the most inspiration prof and makes you want to learn. Number one in my books!
Great Prof, we applauded him on the last day lol If you get a chance to take a class with him, go for it!
Prof Williams is an amazing first year CRIM prof. He makes the course very interesting, and makes the concepts really easy to understand. He uses Webct, and posts thorough powerpoint slides online to make it easy to refer back and make good notes. All in all, extremely good prof, highly recommend taking a course with him :)
Williams is one of those proffs that you will remember for the rest of your studies at York..He is by far the best professor I ever had (I am now in third year criminology at york)..He is phenomenal! Take up any chance you have on having a class with him..
Dr Williams is an awseome prof. He takes the time to explain and relate topics to current world issues. He has a great sense of humor, which helps get through the dry criminology theories! If you have a chance to take one of his classes, DO IT!
Proffesor Williams is by far the best prof at York!! He is so clear, you'll understand everything in his lectures! I actually looked forward to my Crim lectures- his slides get posted online but make sure you take notes along with it! If you have him, consider yourself lucky! :)
Awesome prof. Really knows how to engage the students in the lectures. Uses many examples to clarify concepts. Always makes an organized study outline for students before exams. Easy going and wants everyone to do well.
best professor I ever had at york so far, he's clear and explains with examples. Good pace, randomly funny and is very helpful:) oh and he's cute! I want to take the course again just for him take this course!
This prof is by far the best prof I ever had, high school or not. If you have the choice to take a class with him, DO IT! He's VERY insightful and helpful, very prepared, (take notes btw), and prepares great study notes! He always makes awesome connections to the real world and his class CRIM is by far better than I expected it to be,TAKE HIS CLASS
This is an amazing prof and he makes learning interesting. It really makes you want to go to lecture and be part of something special. Very funny and likes to keep the class motivated. Highly recommend taking the class with this prof because you will learn a lot and you really wont regret it.
Class average is right now a 65% and he says you need a B to go on in Criminology. I have an A so far and don't like the course. Planning on switching majors anyways. Not an easy course and information is limited.
Incredibly difficult course required for first year criminology majors.
This is the first year required course for Criminology majors. It is extremely difficult and only a quarter-half the class is able to continue. Professor lectures clearly but has high expectations, as do his Ta's. Class average was a 64% and you need a B to continue. I got an A but changed majors. Didn't like the course/program at all.
Alright, incoming first years. Most people don't continue on in crim. It's hyped up and overrated. Hard course and monotone prof. Avoid and change your major.
the class average is a 65% and you need a B to get into second year which is absolutely ridiculous, i am switching majors to sociology, just because sosc is the foundation of criminology and you can do the things you wanted to do with crim with sosc as well ... hard course TA's are hard markers
Professor Williams is a great course instructor although the course was changed from a 9 credit to a 6 credit, meaning the tutorials were changed from 2 hours to 1 hour. This is the first year it has happened and many of us are struggling to get at least a B in the course and the class average is less than that.
Hard course. Monotone, boring professor. Class average 60s. Turned me away from Criminology forever.
What a brutal,incoherent, pointless course.
Great Prof. Very clear and on point during lectures. Displays interesting information in relation to the course. Attending lectures and good study notes can get you B+ to A. Only the course kit is necessary to read especially for the exam as he asks you to make connections with the readings and the documentaries shown in lecture. Amazing course!
I got an A! But it was hard. Class avg was in low 60s.
Good prof and good at explaining things but the course is just hard. Exams in particular multiple choice is very difficult and marked harshly. Cram sessions by crim society are really helpful though
Prof. is great. He teaches very well and enjoyed his lectures. but,, Please change your major to something else. CRIM1650 is way harder than Schulich. people in my tutorial class got 50 to mid 60s for proposal except for two of them. You may not be able to get B if your high school average was mid 90s.
The worst professor/course ever. Definitely changing my major next year, not worth the stress at all. I used to love criminology until this course happened. Avoid it at all costs.
I'm probably one of the only ones who got an A in this class. It's very hard.
definitely a hard class, lecture attendance is necessary to receive a B
James is the best! I was Ill for most of the year. I strongly suggest you talk to your professor or TA if you need any help or have problems they can be very understanding, accommodating & helpful. If you miss a lecture get the notes their extremely important!!! Can't pass without them. This course was overall a great course!
The best prof ever, i always look forward to future required classes in the program of criminology being taught by Professor Williams. Hope I get to sit in one of his lectures again!
Switched to a different major after this course although I got an A. Very boring and hard. Professor is lacking.
very hard to do well in.
Awesome Prof, If you attend the lectures you can do very well.
I enjoyed Professor Williams alot. His presentation were clear and useful, I not once felt that his lectures were 'pointless'. There was not 'fluff' or 'B.S' in any lecture notes, all that he taught was useful towards the final exam and further knowledge in the program.
Be prepared to be challenged. Don't even think you'll get away with BSing it through, he'll call you out on it quickly! Very respectful prof, and was extremely helpful whenever you needed him. Make sure to use office hours if you're confused, he will help you. Easy A if you do your work.
1 of the most fundamental seminars in my crim degree. weekly readings were heavy & intense, but lecturesstudents helped me make sense of all the info. By the end I enjoyed the challenge, & used a lot of the info as conversation starters in my personal life. He WANTS you to get his material, but YOU have to be willing to do the work. He's awesome!
His good but his multiple choice are tricky
Prof Williams is amazing & knowledgeable. His exams require you to do all your readings because his questions encompass the whole semester. He is there for you whenever you need him & explains concept very well. I remember it took me forever to learn social impact bonds. This man is not only funny(tends to laugh at his jokes) but he is good looking
Prof. Williams is the BEST prof I have ever had. He is VERY intelligent & his lectures are engaging. He TRULY cares about his students & wants them to succeed. He is very encouraging & motivating. Attend his lectures & tutorials, do your readings & you will do very well. To sum: Prof. Williams is truly a class act & an asset to York University!
He is an amazing prof! Remember him years after graduating university. He gives York an excellent name. His classes will challenge you but he wants you to understand and do well.
can honestly say he cares about his students and their progress. sometimes can be monotone. very good at explaining the concepts and themes
James is a great lecturer, knows the course very well, and is very good at illustrating course concepts through videos and examples. I enjoyed the class as a first year student but watch out for his multiple choice on exams! And don't use your phone in class, he'll call you out.
Professor Williams is a very good prof. He knows the material very well and is good at explaining it. Lectures tend to get boring because his voice is monotone. The course is filled with lots of readings. The exam is difficult due to the multiple choice questions. Best advice would be to do all the readings and go to every single class.
Professor Williams is a very good prof. He knows the material very well and is good at explaining it. Lectures tend to get boring because his voice is monotone. The exam is difficult due to the multiple choice questions. my advice is attend every lecture. do readings if possile. and ask questions.
Most of tests based on lecture (eg. examples) so just reading won't suffice. Uses slideshows in class but he expands on them in class so if you miss class you won't be able to understand section just based off slideshows. If you use your cell phone or try to leave class early he'll call you out. Likes to use videos to emphasise topics.
Took James's class in the Fall 2016 term, It was because of this course and the efforts this man invested in me during office hours that I was able to manage an A in this class and become a significantly more dedicated student. Though his course is relatively difficult, he will equip you with what you need to get an A in 4000 level seminar courses.
Unless you're required to take this class for criminology, don't take it. It way too hard for a first year course. Although James as a person is a really nice prof. His M/C on the exams are killers. James is very approachable but his lectures are dry!
You will do well in this class if you attend all the lectures!! His notes and grading criteria are very well organized and clear. Study hard and you will do well.
Loved this prof and the course as well. I strongly believe that he is one of the best profs at York University. He is well organized and he clearly has a lot of knowledge of what he's teaching.
Professor Williams is an excellent teacher who has clear, structured lectures and a very coherent and eloquent style of speech. His exams are not difficult if you study very intensely, but you have to make sure you are soaking in the material and take very good notes.
Tests ridiculous
Professor Williams is my favourite professor within the Criminology department so far. Lectures are structured out very well, and he emphasizes what you should know in terms of course material. Readings are important, definitely required to do well in the course. Would definitely recommend taking professor Williams if possible.
James is a great professor. You can tell he really does care about the success of his students and wants you to pass. His lectures are most important to passing his class - he goes overs topics and terms that are not covered in the readings, and most of his exam questions and ideas are taken straight from lecture. Would love to have him for 2nd yr.
The slides are very vague which he does to force you to go to class, but if you go and take detailed notes you will do well. Very big on respect and wanting the attention of everyone, hates phones and will call people out if they are on one.
Exams covers lots of content! But overall great prof and lecture.
Proffesor James is one of the most smartest and amazing proffesor I have ever seen. he knows what he is talking about. lectures are amazing and each is filled with so much information. If you love criminology, then this dude will make you love it even more. He has something about the way he talks and teaches that makes you want to learn more.
Prof. James is what you would call sophisticated and complex when it comes to teaching, but if you attend all his lectures, I guarantee he will fulfill, if not exceed, your expectations. Just like all good things, there is the bad, his exams and assignments could be hard, but hey, isn't that life. But fret not you won't have lots of assignments!!!
Can't say James is the best teacher, but after writing his-mid year exam this week (December 2019) DO NOT read the textbook. everything on the exam is from the lecture. Honestly that's fine because i'm sure I did very well, however the load of reading they give you is insane and I feel like I wasted my time. Lots of memorizing in this course tho!
does. not. give. breaks.
Professor Williams is my favorite professor within the Crim department. Extremely knowledgeable when it comes to corporate crime, which made this class very enjoyable. He provides you with the necessary resources to succeeds, and genuinely wants you to do well within his course. I took him for 3 years at York, and always enjoyed his courses.
I took this class during the 18/19 year. If you just write down everything he says and just review that as your notes for the exam, then you can pull off a good grade. I didn't do any of the readings. The research essay isn't too hard either.
Prof. Williams definitely knows his stuff and you can learn a lot from him. His lectures are incredibly monotone with no breaks so expect to be bored. Readings don't matter in the slightest the exams are only based on lectures. Slides have 2 words on them go to lecture each week and you'll be fine.
I took this in 2018, he is one of the best. He's kind, you only have like 1 or 2 assignments and he gives you the space and resources you need as well as having 2 exams. I'm sure his 4000 level course is similar. It won't be a bird course but as long as you pay attention, make sure you understand concepts as you'll need them in the future
Best professor in the CRIM department hands down. His lectures are very informative and he really understands the material and explains it thoroughly. He's also very understanding based on your circumstance. God bless this man.
Absolute amazing professor. He really does care about his students and I actually enjoyed everyone of his lectures. People say he's monotone but that honestly doesn't change anything. He made first year online university enjoyable. Definitely going to take him again in fourth year for Crime and Corporation. Would definitely take him again.
this prof is very nice and helpful. Make sure to focus on lecture material. It is very important
Some of the TAs mark too tough but he is a great prof who teaches well
attend classes and pay attention to detail, but overall genuinely enjoyed it
honestly guys, this is the most kind well rounded prof he deadass cares about his students he is so understanding and will go above and beyond for you... best prof ever period.
James is my favourite Professor in the CRIM department. He is very passionate about the material and genuinely wants you to succeed. Attention to detail is key and never be afraid to reach out to him for help. While he has high expectations, he helps you along the way to meet those expectations. He definitely made the CRIM program worth it for me.
Professor Williams was one of the best profs I've had during my first year! His lectures are engaging and he is very passionate about the topics discussed throughout the course. He is always available for any questions or concerns and is incredibly reasonable. I'd definitely take a course from him again.
I absolutely loved crim with professor Williams. He is passionate about what he teaches and never fails to show it during lectures. Despite being online intro to crim was definitely my favorite class (and therapy lol). I'd take another class with him if given the chance.
This was one of the best classes I have every taken. Prof. Williams is a great professor and so are his TA's make sure you go to lecture and take detailed notes. Readings aren't as importent. When I took this course it was online so it was really nice and professor Williams was really accommodating.
I loved this course and professor Williams. Him and my TA are very accommodating and considerate. He is very passionate about what he does. If he had another class available to take I would take it instantly.
I had Prof. Williams in my 1st year (last year), and let me say that he's one of the best professors at York. Truly grateful to have had him as a prof and now as a mentor. Genuinely cares for his students, and provides much support and guidance. Lectures are crucial - never skip! If another course of his comes up, I'll be enrolling in a heartbeat.
I had professor Williams for CRIM1650 and he was an amazing prof. His lectures are quite interesting, however, this doesn't mean you should skip them. There are about 2 readings every week so be sure to stay on top of your readings, a mid-year exam, final exam, and a paper at the end. Will hands down be one of the best profs I had ever had!
Prof Williams is very good, as long as you take notes, go to the lectures and take the class serious there's no reason for you to fail. Unless you have a horrible TA
I had Professor Williams for my first year and he was amazing! He's super passionate about his lectures which make them so much more interesting. He teaches very well and uses many examples to ensure students are able to relate course content to real life. I would 100% take another course of his in the future! he truly does care for students :)
Prof James is amazing, he truly cares about you, he answers emails quickly and efficiently, if you take everything seriously you'll be fine. BTW if you don't do good in the first half like me, don't worry about it because you'll do better. I got a C minus for my first paper and an A+ on the second one, and I ended up with an A overall
W Professor Honestly made learning Criminology interesting by including documentaries (that are important to take notes of)
Amazing Professor, if you wanna pass make sure you attend lecture and TAKE NOTES. Do the readings but can still pass if you didn't do them. If he repeats something it WILL be on the exam.
really nice and caring
