Awesome professor!
Horrible! I skipped half the classes just cause I couldn't deal with the guy! He didn't teach us anything and we never got to discuss ethics, which was the freakin' point! Avoid him even though he is pretty easy if he likes you.
this class was treated as a philosophy class and we never discussed ethics. plus he gives more papers than any other ethics professor.
I enjoyed the class, discussions, and direction he gave. Good books. I wish it were possible to make more conclusions in the class. Requires an average few hours a week, mostly reading. Don't take philosophy if you aren't interested in it.
Trys to be helpful. Gives very hard readings. It is unclear what he wants from the things he assigns. Class wasn't even about ethics...try to take someone else.
this is supposed to be ethics, but its not. its philosophy. so while other ethics classes are debating abortion and gay marriage, we're writing impossible papers on nietzsche. get a different teacher
I hated this class. He taught his opinions on philosophy, not a single thing about Ethics. He isn't clear at all about what he wants you to write about in the papers. Try to get someone else!
i really enjoyed his classes a lot. i learned a lot from him about ethics and philosophy. he is great with the students and he is very open to different opinions. inever missed a class and loved talking to him outside of class. he is very helpful and just a wonderful guy.
for an ethics teacher, he is horrible. a petty academic bully.
If you're liberal, you'll love him. We did not discuss one thing about ethics, but how evil corporations are and how Bush doesn't know what he's doing. It's unclear what he wants you to write about in the papers, but if you are good at BSing you can at least pull off B's.
Winchester was great! I really like his method of teaching and his discussion are interesting (if you read your book). He definitely opened my eyes to a LOT of different views of present- day situations. TAKE HIM!!!
I really enjoyed this class and the dicussions that we had.The class seemed more focused on philosophy, but he is always willing to help with the papers assigned and the readings given. The class was rather easy for me,but if you don't like writing you're in trouble!
THE MAN'S A GENIUS!
This was one of my most interesting classes, and I'm a junior now. You can get an A if you read everything, do all your work, and really pay attention to the discussions.

interesting class. not always clear though.
He sees his job as an opportunity to change other's opinions to his own.He does not allow any opinions different than his own to be expressed,as soon as someone speaks out he finds a weak argument as to why it's wrong with absolutely no evidence.Grades based on his opinion, not on academic ability.Extremely liberal with no knowledge on how to teach
He stole our professors job. He's an ****.
I don't believe Dr. Winchester tries to change anyone's opinion at all. I had him for aesthetics and he was very open and interested in what we had to say. He even welcomed analysis of his own book. He always told us that the way he sees it does not mean its the only way. It was a difficult but very interesting class. and Winchester is hot.
DO NOT EVER TAKE HIM if you have any knowledge, are religious, have any sort of political opinion that is not flaming liberal, or actually like things like success or America. O yea and 1 more thing, if you don't regurgitate his opinions you get a C or worse.

He is a good teacher. For one, he does not hate black people or conservatives. I am rather conservative and still managed to enjoy the class. If you fail his class it is pretty much because your brain isn't working properly. Easy.
very bad teacher
Great teacher. Very involved and interested in his class. Extremely liberal opinions, however he will listen to other viewpoints when they are presented. As long as you back up your arguments with reason, its a fairly easy A
If you want an A, puke up his views and put it on paper. This class SUCKS, if you're religious be prepared to back it up to a man who essentially hates America.
good teacher. you have several study question/short essays to write so you have to read the text. some of the text is diffucult but he is willing to help you understand. logics portion is difficult as some test questions are ambiguous. overall easy class.
great teacher. very good to his students. very open
he likes to tell people that they're wrong, with no evidence to back himself up.
Best professor yet!
If anybody finds out if he really does have a tail, tell me please.
Student: "In my opinion (insert viewpoint on anything)." Winchester:"Well, um, you know, I see where you coming from, but you're wrong." Last time I checked we were entitled to our own opinions, but I guess I'm wrong. He only gives good grades to the people who spit his ideas back up on a paper.
hate winchester. the class was pretty easy, but the material is so boring. and if you don't write exactly what winchester wants in your paper, then you don't get an A. i hated the class. don't take it if you don't have to. (and so you know, you can take world lit instead of this class) class is bearable.
He was dreadfully boring, could never keep the attention of the class unless we were all arguing against him. He assigns a paper every other week and one class presentation(same requirements as his other papers). I pretty muched B.S.ed every paper and still made an A. Alot on the economy, not enough on ethics, but i recommend him (trust me,easy A)
I don't feel that he was abrasive in his opinions, but I can see how those leaning toward the Right would find him harder to bear. Debate is only as good as students make it. Do NOT make generalizations in papers. Tactful in getting grades back. Has interesting information on world issues, you just have to ignore the occasional utopian ideals.
Dr. Winchester is a great teacher. He tends to have very liberal opinions. His class is mostly all discussion based on the reading assignments. He loves debate and will make you think about some highly controversial ethical issues. Great class! I loved it!
Really an inspirational teacher to have. Any inkling of passion one might have for philosophy will germinate in this class. He does a great job of encouraging people to speak up, form an opinion, and still respectfully consider alternate views of an issue.
Contrary to what others have posted, I found Winchester to be overly conciliatory towards his students' opinions. He was amenable to arguments that deserved absolutely zero consideration. He is so bright and knowledgeable, but he needs to be more assertive. At times, this attitude made him seem like a weak philosopher, but he really knows his stuff
Likes to make you read a lot (2 books per essay) and critically analyze what you have read and compare and contrast the two books together. Do the reading and the essays and you should at least make a B. No midterm of final. Very nice guy :)
Jim is the man. He is a great teacher and does not mind reading your essays before they are due to check the quality of them. Easy B and with a little work it's not hard to get an A.
He is in love with the authors of the books he assigns. He will back up their opinions with the intensity of 1000 suns.
He was definitely not my favorite teacher, but his class was pretty easy. No tests, just sets of study questions from the books. The books are kinda boring but they're not hard to read. I would take this class for the grade. He let's you bring copies of your work before-hand and he will tell you everything you need for an A. Overall, take him.
He's a pretty interesting fellow. Quite liberal. Kinda boring sometimes with discussions. The books were alright, just really gotta use your noggin. But he's easy, not too harsh on grading.
Winchester seems to be a staple of the campus, everyone knows him and has an opinion on him. Intro to Philosophy is an easy A for those that come to class, participate, and reread their papers before turning them in. Hes opinionated but doesn't push his opinions on people and he likes to play Devil's advocate when discussing. Really nice guy too.
His laugh will crack u up.He loves his job and the books he makes you read. You sit in a circle and discuss what you read.Participate in discussion.Take a lot of notes, especially on his opinions and the quotes he points out.Go to class, take notes, and let him read over your essay before it is due and you will easily make an A.
He's such a sweet guy and really knows his material. The class isn't too difficult as long as you read A LOT! The tests are take home exams and are difficult so bring him a draft. Overall, he's a great teacher!
This class isn't too interesting but it isn't too hard. You read ton in class and have many discussions in class, sometimes it's tedious. However, Jim gives out easy assignments. If you read some, you will do well on reading quizzes. For his test, they are long papers. I would highly recommend visiting him, he will help you to write a good paper.
I've taken many of Jim's classes and I really enjoy them. They are philosophy classes so yes you will need to know how to read, write, and think, but that should be expected. He is a great guy and will help you out whenever you need him.
I did the Bridge Scholars Program over the summer and he is probably the best teacher I have had. His discussions are very helpful when it comes to understanding the text. He also will make time to read over your paper before the due date. I HIGHLY reccommend him.
Jim is so invested in the well-being of his students. Even when students offer questionable opinions, he readily accepts them and keeps the conversation going. He is so easy to approach for help, and now we are friends! I got an A because I read, thought, and wrote. Which is why we're in college. Take his class and soak up the IQ points!
One of the nicest people. Instead of just talking about books or pieces of work, he'll pick out little bits of it and relate it to the real world. Class discussions are an every day thing and are super fun if people actually participate
Dr Winchester is very kind and understanding. This class is discussion-based and can be extremely interesting. Do the work and you will get an A.
The class was difficult but very interesting and the prof was extremely helpful in making sure we understood the material.
Very fun and interesting. He cares about his students. I honestly don't have a bad thing to say about him. He pushes you to think critically about the real world, and to stay up to date with the society and international societies. I loved his teaching style. He wants you to engage in class discussions and listen to other people's comments. So nice
Dr. Winchester came to class every single day with a good attitude. He was open to all opinions & encouraged class discussion. He was very kind if you missed an assignment. If you didn't understand something, he was more than willing to clarify anything you needed. I would take his class over again in a heartbeat. Nothing negative to say about him.
You have to read a lot of confusing texts. There are no tests, but there are random reading quizzes that can be difficult if you don't keep up with readings. He isn't too tough on papers, but class is extremely boring.
It's a philosophy class; you're going to be doing a lot of reading and writing. Read the books, attempt to talk in class, and go to his office when you need help. He basically writes your paper for you if you talk to him. Fun guy, not always the most interesting lectures. If you try you won't have any problems.
Winchester is the sweetest man. He encourages class discussion. You do have to read a lot and he makes sure you do with pop quizes. My class had 3 papers and 2 oral reports to make up the majority of the grade. The papers are long and you really have to know the material in the books to write them.
There is a lot reading. Majority of the books were boring and hard to understand, but as long as you read and participate in class you will do well. There were 2 paper test, 2 final exam papers, 2 oral reports, & 5 pop quizzes. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He will rewrite your paper for you. Class is a circle discussion. DO THE READING!
He's a really nice guy. Super eager to help you learn. Every class is discussion, which can definitely be boring, but he helps keep things somewhat interesting at least. There's a lot of reading which can be confusing but he helps you understand. He'll help rewrite your paper if you come to him before it's due.
Right when I stepped in did I fall for this man. His lips were the petal to my heart. Never have I ever really felt how romantic philosophy was because of Jim Winchester. He teaches of old men and young men relationships and I just wanted one with him. I can't imagine how experienced he must be. He truly is the good life.
Jim is super passionate about expanding the minds of his students. Each class is a discussion that revolves solely around the reading, and his tests (long papers) are super in-depth with the book. It is refreshing from the typical lecture style class; I would definitely take another class of his if it related to my major.
Jim is a really cool guy but his expectations are crazy high. When an assignment says to analyze a passage, it really means just rewrite the passage in your own words without quoting.
Jim is a great guy who truly cares about the work he does. The material may be uninteresting, but the professor's enthusiasm will compel you to work hard regardless. To be honest though, a crafty student can still get a good grade and not read all of the texts assigned, but watch out for the occasional pop quiz
I took Jim for GC1Y Phil & Social Justice. Jim is very passionate about social justice and his classes are a circle discussion type, instead of a lecture BUT get ready to read A LOT. We had 5-6 books assigned, daily discussion questions, 5 pop quizzes, 2 oral reports, & 3(?) lengthy written exams. Very strict on attendance. Great with office hours!
Dr. Winchester (or Jim, as he'll insist you call him) can get grating. The workload for his Social Justice class is appropriate and manageable, but likely annoying if it's outside of your major. In classroom debates, he'll insist on neutrality, but given that he's the only one who knows what he's talking about, that can be frustrating.
Jim is honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. His class is just reading different books and having an in-class discussion about what you had to read prior to class. Very manageable class with a very likable professor.
Professor Winchester is a nice guy and means the best for his students. His classes are based heavy on outside reading that can get pretty rough at times. Though with that being said the daily homework may take a total of 5mins. He has his own specific way of how he wants papers to be written. If you go to his office hours you will surely get an A.
Jim catches a lot of flack, but he's really a very easy professor if you do your work. His class is discussion based and you'll have assigned readings every class. If you go to his office hours with any of your drafts, he'll probably give you an A. Jim wants to see that YOU care and will actively participate in daily discussions.
James J Winchester will forever have a special place in my heart. Although his workload may be strenuous at some times, he will be one of the greatest teachers you will ever have. He will make you closer to your fellow peers and teach you things about the world that you could never imagine without him. I am in love with Jim and his beautiful self.
Dr. Winchester is a great professor! He is really into his class which makes it more interesting for you. It is a lot of reading and work but its a great class. Pop quizzes do get annoying but the tests are all take home papers that he helps a lot on if you go to his office hours.
You have an assignment to turn in every time you go to class, but he doesn't overload you with work. He's a fair grader and wants to see you succeed.
He is a nice person but VERY opinionated. My class got in a bunch of arguments with him about these specific topics. He does not listen to what you have to say, you are automatically wrong if he doesn't agree with you. You have to read about 50 pages per class. It's a lot of work and a lot of money to buy all the books and print out papers.
I love Dr. Winchester! There is no doubt that he is well-versed in his expertise and passionate about his job! There are quite a bit of papers, but if you go to his office hours, he is always willing to help you out in any way you can! Not to mention, hes a fairly easy grader and its not overly difficult to get an A in his class! Take him!
Jim was easily the worst prof I've every had. If you miss too many classes (excused or not), he will hurt your grade and won't help on assignments. He's super opinionated, too. the class has a lot of heated discussions, and if he doesnt agree with your opinion, your wrong. its a lot of readings, and some are easy, but some are very confusing too.
I had Dr. Winchester for my first year academic seminar, a 1 credit hour class. This class was very much "show up and pass," but many of his other classes are not as easy. He truly cares about his students and loves what he teaches. I am already signed up to take another one of his classes in the future!
I was supposed to take this class in Paris for Study Abroad. Due to COVID, we had to move the class online. Dr. Winchester did an amazing job of moving the class online. It was a lot of reading, but it was interesting. He seems to be an easy grader. If you do the assignments you should not have a problem getting an A.
HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. I had an urgent family emergency so I couldn't turn in an assignment on time and he straight up didn't even respond and gave me a 0. He knows what he is talking about but is very opinionated. Wouldn't recommend taking his class.
Jim Winchester is a really good professor, especially for his critical thinking courses. It's mainly a lot of readings and then lectures in class but the assignments are easy and when you have to write papers he makes the guidelines very easy to follow and doesn't ask for an introduction or conclusion paragraph. He also only made class once a week.
Jim is one of the most caring professors I have ever had. He really cares about what he teaches. There is quite a bit of reading, and 5 reports but they are super easy! If you go to his office hours, he will read your drafts and fix it to his liking. After that you are guaranteed an A.
For a GC1Y this class was way too much work! He is super sweet but also gets petty when students do not put his class first. Expects everyone to go to office hours. Made us buy 5 books that were not cheap. So much reading plus long complicated papers.
James Winchester is one of the most caring professors. I am taking his critical thinking: Friendship class. It is a decent amount of reading but it is really easy to spark notes your discussion posts and there are no tests and you only have to do 5 pretty easy reports. In class you get into some really interesting conversations
Took his gc1y, and I really enjoyed Jim and his class. He was lenient on attendance due to covid and let the class lead the discussion a lot of the time. There is a lot of reading and two discussion posts each week, but he's a pretty easy grader and cares about what he's teaching. I'm taking him again next semester!
Dr. Winchester is fine but rambles without a real point. He always manages to skew conversation to covid, climate change, abortion. He always promotes his political beliefs, no matter how off topic they are. He is an easy grader, though you have to write one essay a week. But if you do all the essays and read all the books, it's relatively easy.
I took Jim for my first year GC1Y on friendship. While we did have to read a ton, the papers and discussions are pretty simple. This class overall isn't too hard, you just have to spend some time writing/thinking about what you read. Class discussions often helped me gain new perspectives because I heard other people's opinions.
As long as you take the time to read each book and actively participate in class, the class is easy. He does a wonderful job at allowing students to speak their mind and engage in meaningful conversations.
I took Jim for my GC1Y Critical Thinking class. There are a couple of books required, 2 discussion posts every week unless you had a report for one of the days. We each had to do 5 reports, but he grades easy and wants you to get an A. Discussion and participation are the main things he wants from class time, most of the topics are interesting.
He's not a terrible professor, his classes just seemed so long because he would drag them out. We had 5 papers throughout the course and if you didn't have a paper that day you would have to do a summary over the reading. He is helpful with the papers, but you get in trouble if you site the book. He is a tough grader when it comes to the papers.
I LOVE JIM! Overall an amazing guy and makes class entertaining. He doesn't grade super harsh and actually cares that we learn instead of just doing work. He assigns reading every night and discussion posts, but its not super difficult. Theres 5 reports through the semester but if you put effort into them then they are an easy A.
mr. winchester's class was fine, but he can be a bit boring at times and even a bit hard to understand. his seminar should be an easy A for most students. grades consist of attendance and three 600-word essays. what got on my nerves was that he gave me a 95 on all three essays, but did not tell me anything was wrong with them depriving me of a 100
Jim is an extremely kind and understanding professor. He definitely encourages participation, and as long as you turn in your work and show up to class you'll get an A.
I'm usually not picky about classes but I did not really like this one. Participation is mandatory in the class and if you have not contributed to the discussion he will have you contribute at the end of class and drags out the class to the last second. Jim is a nice guy I'm just not a fan of how he runs his class.
Jim is nice, but I feel he has a lack of understanding when it comes to how much course work he assigns. Having other classes and any extracurriculares will definitely make his class difficult as I have had him a couple of times now and the course load has stayed the same with the classes set up identically. He also has some outdated views.
It is required that you buy 6 books that you will read through the semester. Your grade will consist of five oral reports (equivalent to a test or essay), about 25 disussion posts, and your attendance. He is very nice and the workload is manageable, but you have to be able to find time for it. Lot of discussion in this class.
Dr. Winchester is by far the most inspirational prof I've had the pleasure to be taught by. Classes are mainly group discussion and he has a regular schedule of two readings a week with one short essay a week. I've rarely had an essay I didn't like writing or a discussion I didn't enjoy. Very great classes if they fit your learning style!
A TON of reading is required along with a TON of homework. If you take this course get ready to have homework every single day before a class and not get out a minute early.
He is a very kind man, and he gives excellent feedback for reports. There are 5 you write per semester and are easy to do. you have to submit a discussion post before each class. He genuinely cares about your view on your reports and discussion posts. He cares if you are absent! I would take one of his classes again if I could!
I loved this professor and thought he was a great guy. The actual work isn't hard the reading is just very time consuming.
This class is not necessarily a hard class, but it is very time consuming. You will read around 4 books all the way through and will have to write discussion posts for every reading assigned unless you have a report due. The actual class is basically just talking the whole time about what you read and then reading reports. Professor is super sweet!
At first, Jim seemed like a nice guy, but I soon realized that I was very wrong. Jim assigned me 5 essays that I had to present to the class and 26 discussion posts that were all mandatory. All in all, Jims class was a traumatizing experience that created an awkward leaning environment.
Prof. Jim runs a engaging class with interesting discussions. While there's a lot of reading, he's a fair grader and understanding. unstuck ai's tools were a big help for studying and preparing.
Professor Winchester seemed very nice at first, but I was quickly proven wrong. He picks favorites, and overall it is a very uncomfortable and boring learning environment.
Jim's made a fun environment and allowed us to transport to various locations based on the books we were reading. Though we had to read a lot, it was fun to talk about the books and most of them were good reads- coming form someone who does not read much.
Jim's class was a lot like a book club with homework. The books chosen were interesting, and there were no tests, only reports. He created a great learning environment to discuss a wide variety of topics, and as long as you stay on top of the reading you'll do fine!
2 summaries every week and 5 papers total for the whole class. He also doesn't believe in 100s. Very nice guy and will be lenient if you communicate with him.
Lots of reading and discussion posts. 5 700+ word reports but no tests. Read your reports out loud in class. He tends to go on tangents. Not really a hard class just had a big workload that was often overwhelming. Points off for missing class and discussion posts.
