Is this guy for real?? I wonder who at MSU gave this guy a job! This guy seriously does not know a thing about teaching and gives nothing to the students to look forward to! I don't think the students nor himself has any clue what is being discussed in class! I would so drop this guy's class if I wasn't graduating this semester! aargghh!!

The class was no walk in the park, but it is a Senior level course. Lectures were a bore and a lot of students dropped the class. Those who remained found a professor that truly opened up and showed he wasn't so bad after all. You have to hand in a 4pg reaction ppr every other week. NO MIDTERM OR FINAL! Just a 14pg+ term paper.
Excellent teacher! He knows his subject very well and quotes from primary historical sources. He is also fair and attendance is not mandatory. I wouldn't recommend missing a class as the notes are imprtant. The tests are fair just make sure you put together a good essay. He speaks slowly which some find dull but it helps when taking notes. Take him
worst class i've ever had and worst professor i've ever had! sooooooooo boring. he talks so slow and paces back and forth and it is so distracting no can concentrate on what he is saying.
He is a fair grader. Make sure that you organize the essays for the exams. Although there was no required textbook, it is important to attend class regularly and take good notes.
Attendance and participation not mandatory. His midterm and final comes directly from his lectures, and he does that a lot. Take down what he says in class, and go often and you should get a good grade. He is a fair grader and a good professor,Good class to take towards History majors because you will actually learn something. Textbook usage is low
If youre into 2 exams being your entire grade then hes your man. He doesnt take attendance but if you wanna pass the class you better plan on going, unless you yourself already know the history of Latin America. Smart man to say the least but lectures make me want to jump out a window.
He is extremely demanding in expecting you to focus all your attention on his class and his only. He assigns alot of reading per week also.
OK I would not reccomend this teacher to anyone He rambles on the whole time and all you are doing is taking notes that are all over the place!he only gives 3 grades a quiz midterm and final..50 %of you grade is the midterm its CRAZY and the final is cummulative! So do urself a favor and take another professor. He might be goodlooking but who cares
He knows history, but does not know HOW to TEACH it. He's very unorganized and goes from one topic to another.
Do not take this professor doesn't know how to teach. He is rude to his students. If you want your GPA to go down then take him.
Knows his stuff but has difficulty conveying his own excitement for the material to the students (aka boring). Attendance isn't mandatory so you're best off just reading the book and showing up on key days (quiz/test reviews and days of quizzes/tests). Pretty easy class overall. Would not recommend for non-history majors.
ugh. the guy is smart, ill give him that, but he shows very little excitement while presenting his material. i almost fell asleep every class [im a history major, too!] and the final was cumulative. i didnt buy the book, there's actually a partial copy on google books that gives you a good amount of material. take it only if you need to...
how can i say this without using foul language, he sucks, boring and is just a waste of a semester. if you like to sit there and take notes for the full hour and 15 while at the same time try hard to stay awake then be my guest. only 2 tests and 1 quiz, 2 textbooks, and some maps to look at. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER!
WORST TEACHER AT MONTCLAIR. This is my final semester and i must say this guy is TERRIBLE. I have never had a teacher or a class that was so boring and out of touch with reality. Does he actually think anyone cares about Latin American History? Its a 100 level class and he makes it a 400 level class. He laughs when he says how many people are
Basically everyone else is right. Boring, long lectures, 3 grades the whole class. Don't know how I got him in the first place, I think my teacher switched. Would have NEVER taken this guy. This is a 100 level that should be easy but it's hard. So hard.
The reviews that are on here are clearly from students who walked into college expecting it to be a breeze. If you want to learn something you have to work. Woodard isn't easy, but he is extremely fair and wants to teach his students something. I've gained a great deal from this man and definitely appreciate it. I took him twice and recommend him.
Woodard is okay. He's a tough grader and doesn't always look at your content versus your grammar. He's not that bad if you have to take him, but if you can avoid him, I'd try for something else. Absolutely don't take him if you have a heavy course load on top of this.
I don't know what these people are talking about. Woodard is THE MAN. I took him for History of Brazil, a 300s class, and I thought the workload was very fair. he's really cool and easy on the eyes, haha. I'm taking another class with him this coming spring. btw his upper level classes get a nice surprise at the end of the semester :)
Good class if you're interested in the material. It is a level 400 history class, so there is a lot of reading. Anyone who just wants an easy A shouldn't take the class, but you will walk out actually learning something. It isn't that unbearable it took 4 other upper level classes with this one and walked out with a B.
wow. this guy is the worst. wants a class at MSU to be like harvard, well its not class attendance not mandatory, but he doesn't post handouts or other necessary study tools, retarded POST IT dont waste paper also snow day with my other 3 classes canceled, this guy is here in knee high boots had to come bc he is giving study guide and he WOULDNTPOS
I am a history major, and I must say that this class is somewhat more challenging for me than the 400 history class I am taking.Attendance is not mandatory and if you are not motivated to go,this will having you skipping class. But it is as if you have to be there since the lectures he gives are necessary for the exams. I hope I get at least a B-
Extremely helpful and intelligent. One of the best courses/teachers that I have taken in my lengthy college career. Lots of work and independent study required. If that's not your thing, then don't take his course.
This Dude, where do I begin..BORINGGGGG OMG I should have listened to my fellow friends when they said not to take him with capital letters NOT. His test are crazy, he doesnt really tell you what to study for.. awww man Im so angry I took him!!! LATIN AMERICA.. who cares NEVER TAKE HIM
This guy is really into Latin American History. I can respect that. BUT, his teaching methods and expecatations for a 100 Level course are WAY too high. He teaches it like a 400 Level course. Nice guy and a Mets fan too, but way to serious and unclear for a Introductory 100 Level course.
This class was by far one of the most challenging classes I have taken, but I couldn't ask for a better professor! Professor Woodard is extremely intelligent learn & u will definitely learn a lot from him! This class is very demanding, but honestly if u can't deal with it, then what are you doing in college? Definitely a great class and professor!
Although he is good looking, he definitely has some smarts. When I am in his class I feel like I am at a party where they are speaking in another language. There is no need to use such big words all the time. He takes time to think of bigger, smarter words to sound smart. This class is deff a challenge. I would never recommend it to anyone!
Overall,he's a cool professor. He's passionate about Latin American history, and gives a laid back, calm feeling to the class. You don't have to show up all the time, just know a lot about the course you are taking, cuz passing the midterm and final is what counts. He even handed out candy one time to all of us one day. No research paper at all. Cool.
Good teacher, pretty difficult if you don't attend class, but not impossible. Fair grader, will not cheat you out of a good grade or fail you for no reason. Actually made the subject interesting and somewhat fun to learn about. Nice, funny, intelligent. If you must take a non-western hist class, take this one.
Those who take Woodard's lower level class have to keep in mind that he is working with 100 or so students who are mostly there to fulfill a gen ed requirement and couldn't give a damn. He is extremely knowledgeable, which may make him seem aloof but don't let this discourage you. If you are willing to put in the work, you will gain so much.
Very hard but also very helpful. he gives you the essay topics for both the mid-term and final. attend class let him know who you are and you'll do good
def. a smart and great professor. Yes, he is hard but he does give you the essay questions(which are 60% of the test) before hand. If you're passionate about history and learning, take him. If you're looking for an easy A do not.
He's Okay, I would not recommend him to anyone. He is very very boring and he takes the time to think of bigger words to make himself sound smarter. The downside to that is that he loses students. The essays are given but he will give you 8 essays and only 2 will appear on the exam. Even then he grades harder than he should. He is very nice though
it was just funny to listen to him teach, so he wasn't a good speaker. he's approachable and nice but the work/tests were semi-hard if you didn't pay attention in class. made us buy two books and we never used the second one.
This class was definitely harder than I expected but by no means impossible. If you go to the lectures and ask questions you'll do fine. He can be a tough grader at times but he is fair at the same time. Only 3 grades being a map quiz midterm and final but you get the essay questions ahead of time. If you're ready to work in college take this class
Nice guy, good teacher. Keep on top of the reading, take good notes during lectures. He talks slowly but it's helful for note taking. 3 grades: Map quiz 10% Midterm 40% Final 50% If you read the books and paid attention, the tests should be cake. Work on the essays he gives before the tests since theyre worth 60% Not an easy A but still achievable.
A tad on the pedantic side with his lectures. Constantly called me by the wrong first name... got an A to spite him and his course
There is a large amount of reading which you must stay on top of because you discuss it every class. Got a bit boring because it focused on politics which is his forte not mine. I hated the book review which was very unclear and the style is not for UG students since we don't really research historians/writers persay but all in all it wasn't bad.
he was hot, but that's about it. he talks sooooo slow ! i fell asleep almost every class i went to-not many. reading was very important and note taking. required like 4 books for our class -_-. i withdrew, it was way too much for me especially since it was my 1st semester of freshmen year. smh don't take him !
Woodard is Legit, I might be the only one who thinks that though!! If you know what your doing he's easy and the man sweats like its his job!
I do not like his class at all. He takes five to ten second breaks between sentences. He only has three grades throughout the semester: a map test for 10%, a midterm for 40%, and a final for 50%. You really need to read the texts to pass the class; his lectures alone won't help you unless you take excellent notes. PS - He sweats like it's his job!
Woodard knows his stuff, but he talks wayy too slow and never finished lectures on time. By that I mean that we're way behind on the syllabus. He knows his stuff and he answers questions, but he answers them cryptically and he doesn't care for his students whether it's grades, or issues. Won't excuse you unless you're dying. Tough grader too.
he talks very slowly and it is hard to not fall asleep in his class. three exams and they are the only grades in the class. he tries to be funny, and it sometimes works. he knows his subject area very well and if you have a question, he tries his best to explain it, but it doesn't always help
The class consists of 1 map quiz, a mid-term, and a final exam. At first, it seems like a straightforward class, but Woodard is a mundane guy that lectures on stuff that isn't on the exams. I highly encourage everyone to avoid taking any of his classes.
Woodard is a great professor but the workload is insane.. But then again it's college not high school. The one sucky thing is that u have to get a million books for his class
this guy is out of his mind. a ton of books and work. he's actually a nice guy but dont take the class if you plan on being lazy. if you want a challenge then take him, if not then stay FAR AWAY.
I loved Prof. Woodard's class. He is challenging, but considering that I want to go to law school in a few years, I really appreciate the class. He talks to students like we are his peers, not just some idiots that he is forced to teach. I met him for extra help a few times and found him to be very receptive and helpful. Take his class!
Please do yourself a favor and do not take this class. His lectures are SUPER boring and never have to do with what is going to be on the exams. He requires 4 books and your final is 50% of your grade with only 2 others tests for the other 50. Exams are based off of readings and the map quiz(10%). NOT HELPFUL and totally boring.
Be prepared for a challenging class with a lot of reading, studying, and hard work regarding the history of Brazil. Woodard is a pretty strict (assignment/policy wise) and straightforward guy who doesn't take anybodys crap. HOWEVER, don't judge him solely on his classroom demeanor. He's an all-around good guy who WILL help you if you reach out.
From the beginning I knew this man was not taking no body's crap. If you are looking for an easy way out, NOT POSSIBLE. DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! HE IS A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR! Boring, not easy, and certainly WAY TOO MUCH WORK is Given. STAY AWAY STAY! STAY AWAY!
SUPER BORING CLASS! he repeats himself most of his lectures and puts you to sleep. attendance isn't mandatory but you do have to do readings for the midterm and final. Grades are accumulated by a map quiz, midterm, and final. He is no an easy A, an average student may be lucky to get even get a C in his class. DONT TAKE HIM!
Get ready for a challegning class. The workload is imence and he requries about 6 books for his which you all use. He's very good looking and knows his stuff. Lectures are very interesting but he's tough. Don't come to class unless you did your work because he will call you out and throw you out of class. Studying is a must.
The ABSOLUTE worst class I've have taken in college. Boring lectures, puts you to sleep, and he makes you buy like 5 books for his class including his own published book trying to make money off his students. Class only consist of a midterm and a final which is 5050 and they're both difficult AVOID AVOID AVOID
Lectures are really boring but important to the tests. Attendance is not mandatory. A lot of books are required. One of the most difficult classes I've ever taken but I ended up with a B+ and I'm not the best student. I liked the professor but probably wouldn't take him again unless it was the only class I was taking that semester.
Extremely Intelligent Man. Great Respect for this Professor.
This is the worst Professor I have ever had. First of all he does not actually seem to like or even want to teach and it clearly shows. The reading quizzes are only 5% of your final grade but if you fail 3 you automatically fail the class. Do not take!
Pretty awful teacher. Doesn't want to teach and fairly rude to the students. Gives pop quizzes (if you fail 3 you fail the class) and you have to lector the class yourself as as he doesn't.
I really respect this man because he really knows his stuff. The pop quizzes are extremely easy and he is really funny. New York Times bestseller author.
A fairly poor class. While he seems like a cool guy personally his class is ridiculous. Half of our class dropped! If you fail 3 reading quizzes you fail the class no questions ask. You will also have to buy many books he had a hand in writing. Someone in our class even had a break down due to this class. Would NOT recommend.
Professor Woodard's class was very informative, albeit a bit boring. He knows his stuff. The class is in lectures and it is HIGHLY recommended to take notes. Most of what he says in lectures can be found one of the textbooks. The class consists of three grades: a map quiz, midterm, and final. I barely used the textbooks and managed an A-.
He knows what he is talking about, very knowledgeable on Latin America. But very very boring, I would not recommend taking him unless you have your own interest in Latin America. He lectures the whole time and his voice is very monotone.
Probably the most boring lectures but he knows what he is talking about and he cracks jokes once in a while. Take notes, pay attention, and study and you should be fine.
Nice enough person but terribly boring lectures and way too many textbooks. You have to buy four textbooks and finish one before the midterm. Something I found out the hard way: you have to do 90% of the work yourself. I found it very difficult to take good notes in class and learned more studying on my own. Take this class only if you need it.
Lecture heavy. Monotonous. A solid professor. Knows his stuff. Would not recommend if you're not interested in history. He's a friendly guy and cracks cheesy jokes no one laughs at. Overall, I would take again.
Probably the worst class I took in my college career so far. He expects you to just know everything for the tests and does not really go over what is important. He basically just tells stories the entire class instead of making it engaging. The class is very hard. It is not worth it if you do not have to take it. Only 3 grades too. Stay far away.
Avoid if you can. Woodard is very knowledgeable of the subject matter but the class is very boring and he is strict on the readings because he gives you a quiz after every one of them, if you fail three reading quizzes you fail the class. He is a fairly tough grader. You really have to work hard to get a decent grade in his class.
STAY AWAY!!! SERIOUSLY. He is the reason I am behind on credits. Had to drop his class because he does. not. teach. There are only three grades so if you do bad on one you're pretty much screwed. He talks to the class like we know what he is saying, even if we have done the reading. It's clear he has no interest in being an engaging professor.
He's a really bad teacher. You get 3 grades all semester, 2 exams and the final. The lectures are really boring and it is really hard to stay awake. The only way to do good is to watch videos or read the textbook. You are on your own in this class and I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you have to. Attendance isn't mandatory.
First of all Professor Woodard is very knowledgeable about Brazil and its history, however, his expectations are extremely high. He only has a few grades, if you fail 2 things you fail the class even if your final grade was a C. You MUST read the 2 text books or you will fail. He gives very little direction so you are pretty on your own.
So he's a nice enough guy, he just lectures a lot, no homework or quizzes or classwork, just map quiz at the beginning, midterm, and final. Makes you read his own book, not sure if he's an egomaniac or just trying to make a quick buck. Take him if you wanna read and make sure to get a goodnight sleep before class and bring a redbull.
Nice person but a horrible professor. I am an honors students and I can barely find the will to deal with this class. Monotone early morning lectures, excessive reading its not worth it. The final is worth half your grade and his grading is horrible. You cannot afford to fail anything.
He has to be one of the worst teachers I have had while at school. A very bad grading system as there is only 2 exams and the book review. He is very smart but he expects you to know all his knowdledge in 3 months. He also makes you buy a book he wrote and makes you take 2 quizs. We have 3 in a semester and if you fail 2 you fail the class. Avoid!
There is only 3 test he gives. 2 actual test 1 is a map quiz. That's it, I think it's a bad grading system. Ok in the lectures interesting topics, but sometimes can be boring at times. He requires reading, but I didn't really read much and got a B-... so yeah good luck
If you ever have a hard time falling asleep go have a conversation with this man. The problem with him is he looks very uninterested in teaching, there is no enthusiasm, he sounds like he's reading out of a book with no explanation. There are 3 assignments in the class. a map quiz a midterm and a final. his exam questions are like riddles.
This class is a drag, all you talk about is brazil, you have to have read the entire book by midterm, and you'll want to drop the class/ withdraw after the first class.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Very challenging for anti intellectual diversity crowd. But if you actually want to learn something take his course.
For anyone on campus that still has a working brain, I strongly recommend that no one should take this guy. There's only a map quiz, a midterm, and a final. He gives absolutely no help for the class and expects everyone to read ALL of the textbooks like we have no other classes, live on campus, don't have jobs, etc. Seriously, stay away from him.
DO NOT TAKE this professor. While he didnt assign any homework or take attendance he should not be teaching a level 100 course. He assigns different books for you to read (1 being a book he wrote). Gave a study guide 2 days before the test which was USELESS. 1 map quiz, Mid-Term, and Final and they are pretty impossible to pass!
Do not take you will regret it. May be a nice guy but he does not teach and for an intro course his expectations are not realistic. Expects too much written work for his exams 5-6 paragraphs for one essay. Only 3 tests and if you fail 2 you are done. I went to every class although he doesn't take attendance. Ruined my GPA Ridiculous
He assigns 3 books to read at the start of the semester and will make the midterm all about it. Study guides arent well enough. Wont tell you what the midterms are about all they say is the type of questions. Dont take him.
V knowledgeable of Brazil, but If you can avoid this Professor. He refuses to use canvas, his lectures are just a monotonous ramble. Rarely do the power points have any useful info & Study guides are useless. Maybe i just take it the wrong way but seems very condescending when you ask him questions. In all honesty his teaching methods are lazy
He gives A LOT of work. Pay attention to the very very boring lectures, take notes, engage and ask questions and you should be fine. Take this class if you enjoy : mostly boring lectures, DENSE readings, the feeling of taking a level 500 class at level 300, low classroom energy, not using canvas, useless study guides & unpassionate teachers
Only lectures. Doesnt use powerpoints. The entire grade is based on a test, the midterm, and the final.
Really dull and boring. He could be quite rude at times. Always made you feel dumb when answering questions, even opinion based. The timeline was all over the place and very confusing. Expected our written work to be like grad students. Always late (30 minutes late on final day). He expected us to know a lot of Brazil's history already. Bad prof
HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. He is a piece of scum. He does not use power points and he does not even lecture. He forces us to read these boring assignments. Nobody in the class participates because he is boring. I hurt my ankle and couldn't come to class and he was like he doesn't care. Don't take this piece of garbage class. He is very rude.
Expects you to read a Whole book in like one day for an assignment like people do not have other classes to take. Plus his breath stinks.
LAME, BORING, no lectures, no power points. He is horrible. I don't know why he didn't get fired.
I hate his guts. NOBODY in the class ever participates because he is SOOOO boring. I promise you he be talking to himself in class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. IT IS NOT WORTH UR MENTAL HEALTH
He is horrible. WHen I asked him a question because I didn't understand, he called me stupid. Plus he is very boring.
This has to be the worst professor I have ever taken while being here at MSU. He is legitimately mean to his students, and I truly believe he enjoys assigning an obscene amount of work because it was done to him as a student. He is never prepared for class, looks for students to read a book in 3 days then write a paper,15 pg final paper too! INSANE
The following review is mostly for History students. He's good if you care about History as a discipline. He works with you if you put in the effort and willing to help during office hours. He's dry and is an academic, not a teacher. But if you truly want to challenge yourself, read more, and improve your writing, take his course.
super lecture heavy & only had one quiz and two exams. if u fail them theres no way to get grade up. he talks super slow and overall kinda boring but the content was interesting. if u pay attention & take good notes youll be fine. try to participate in class so its not just a lecture. assigns textbook reading but u dont really have to read.
There is a book you read for the semester, you can find it online for free. Lectures can be tiring, don't come sleepy, attendance is not required but he shares helpful info for the exams. He notices if you don't come xD. He is not rude & the class is interesting!! No homework assigned. Try to keep up and do not procrastinate readings, they help!!
The discussions in this course were interesting and thought-provoking, but the teaching style and small class size made it uncomfortable. The readings were lengthy, and speaking up was intimidating if you had nothing to contribute. Additionally, no matter how hard you try (without guidelines or rubric), your papers are going to be graded harshly.
Confused professors. Ignore this review.
The lectures can be a bit dull, but if you stay engaged and use resources like Unstuck AI for exam prep, you can do well. Attendance is mandatory, but the workload is manageable if you don't procrastinate on the readings.
