Excellent prof. Always willing to take some time out to help you with any questions. Very helpful and understanding in the lab. Explains everything you need to know, plus more.
great prof, very willing to answer any and all questions and explain labs, very patient, always has time to help
HES HOTTTTT
-very confusing at times -teaches unrelavant material -does not go over example questions in class
Really good. easy to understand. funny, always ready to help. definitely recommend
Great Instructor, especially for labs. Very laidback and understanding.
This professor takes the time to help you out. There is no arguing that. However, his lack of expirence may change your grades dastrically. Be aware, and do not take his structuring and modelling class. Take others in which he may have more lee-way with. Very nice man! Unfortunatly, very unexpirenced with the course.
very helpful and understanding
Very nice professor, very laid back. He will let you hand in a lab 1 week late if you have a good reason. He will let you print labs in his lab. If you don't understand the lab, just go ask him, he will explain it to you step by step. Most of the stuff on the lab report he composed are straight forward.
Doesn't show examples in class, kind of unorganized and seems to jump around alot in the lectures
Really funny guy, likes to use "shitload of molecules". Good to get help from too. Obsessed w/ his Mountain Dew!!!

He's funny and has a relaxed style.
great professor, but not many examples shown in class. when a student corrects him, he always seems to use the excuse " its monday morning, its tuesday morning, its wednesday morning.." and so on. but a good prof!
Lecture notes are all power point. In lectures he doesn't show many examples as needed. He also seemed unorganized.
I think he is good prof. He is approachable, and answer's questions that you e-mail him very quickly.
He's alright...teaches 2 lectures at the same time, 1 from powerpoint, other on the chalkboard, hard to follow. If you read the textbook and take rough notes of his lectures, you should do fine. Funny guy though.
Really nice and helpful guy.
He is a very good prof, the best one i've had so far. He makes his classes interesting and makes you want to learn more. He is a very friendly teacher who enjoys what he does for a living and really cares about his students. He is super helpful and will go out of his way to make sure his class succeeds, also he is very easy to follow and understand
Excellent prof. Easy A+. Very knowledgeable in his area and extremely friendly and approachable. He is also hilarious and does a great job of explaining things. Anyone who bad mouths him is lazy and stupid. The only way you could fail this course is if you have a learning disability.
He is an excellent prof. His explanations are very clear. Also very helpful outside of the classroom. He is very concerned about the success of students and even added an extra review day for the final exam.
The Man. Very easy going nice guy. Very Helpful
Great Chemistry Prof. Very clear, courteous explanations. Makes going to class somewhat fun and very worthwhile. The success of his students is a priority and would go out of his way to help students. Highly recommend taking a class if he is involved.
VERY GOOD prof. Easy to understand, knows the course content very well, great 'real-wordl' ananologies to explain concepts. Funny, laid-back and likes say 'big ass electrons'. He also loves his energy drinks.
Made chemistry interesting! Of all the Chem 1300 profs he's by far one of the best. The final was brutal, but thats not really xidos's fault. As a lecturer, he's great, answers all questions and gets you thinking!
Great chemistry professor; really interesting and knowledgeable regarding the subject matter. Will definitely recommend!
He made a class of over 200, in a really uncomfortable lecture theater, enjoyable. It was great to have his notes on line so you could just add to them during class. The iClicker was helpful in engaging the class as well. You could tell he was really pumped for the course. Strongly recomended!
Xidos made chemistry interesting for me! He cares about his students, has a good sense of humour, is friendly, and has good online notes. He explains concepts very well and doesn't rush thru things. He also did a little bit of review at the beginning of each class about the previous lecture, which was very helpful! My fave prof so far!!
Awesome Prof! Makes topics easily understood! And he goes at a great pace!
Holds attention with funny jokes. Great explanations and very helpful
Great Teacher! took chem in the summer, extremely helpful in and out of class. Easy to approach. Fair exams, study notes, refer to textbook if you don't understand a topic, and the exam should be straight forward. No tricks involved. Keeps class entertaining. HIGHLY recommended!
absolutely wonderful prof. makes class enjoyable and easy to understand the material that he teachs. i highly reccommend him
AWESOME prof! Great review at beginning of each class, clicker questions, and teaches at an easy understandable pace, not to mention his humour! Probably the best CHEM1300 prof!
Best chem prof i've had
By far one of my best profs! really clear with everything, funny as hell, and helpful. I sat in his office from 6 to 8 pm the week before the midterm, just talking about chemistry and related topics. Just a cool guy!
Great Prof! easily the best ive had and his dirty mind crops up jokes at the best of times, just wait for penetration and shielding! I would highly recommend him!
He made applied chemistry for engineers a straight forward course and made it understandable unlike Cullen.
Good instructor!
Very nice guy! Clear explaination! Good instructor!
I love this guy. Great prof, knows what he's talking about. Really funny too. Pops open an energy drink at the beggining of every lecture. Highly recommended!
One of the best profs that I had for first year courses. He taught the concepts well, kept the classes entertaining, etc. He genuinely cares about his students, and he's very helpful.
His pace is kind of slow but it was good for the harder material. He held a final iclicker session after classes ended in prep for the final which was nice of him. His voice is kind of quiet though and he doesn't get irritated by loud talkers which can be annoying when you try to listen.
He was a great proff! I'd deffinitely choose him again. Very approachable and helpful. Does speak quiet, sit close to avoid being distracted. Uses great real life examples that help you understand the concepts.
He's a pretty funny prof and you'll never see him without one of his energy drinks. He's very helpful out of class, whether or not your questions are relevant. If you follow in class and do the suggested problems, you shouldn't have any problem achieving the grade you want. ICicker questions are worth marks, so make sure you attend class.
Even though it's a first year course (and I'm almost graduated), I was so grateful to have him as a prof. Interested in lecturing, notes were excellent, very fair, and very helpful and approachable. Dresses like a hobo, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better prof anywhere!
great prof. very easy to understand, funny, keeps you interested, and EXTREMELY helpful. he loves to help and is always available. the only thing I didn't like is that the exams seemed so much harder than what we did in class (same exam for every section). he made me like chemistry even more though. A+
Helpful, makes time to answer questions even after class. Funny, uses real-life examples and will go over things slowly if you don't catch it the 1st time around. Open, honest, encourages students to keep trying when they may otherwise give-up. Awesome. Too bad he doesn't teach Chem 2210.
Dr. James is good at what he does but he rarely has any office hours and when he does, the ours get canceled 9/10 times. Final exam was chaotic, when they say study older final exams, they stand nowhere near to what the last exam was. Every year they change drastically so it's pointless to use older exams (1-2 years before). Not good.
To be honest Dr. Xidos very nice person and even as a Proff but at the past 2 weeks its pretty hard to find him and other proffs, at this time most of the profs should have extended office hours. So most of the students were stuck by being getting no help from anyone.
Don't take him. He is always busy with something else, students come last. Doesn't answer to emails, doesn't stay after class to answer questions, almost no office hours, and very ambiguous.
James is one of the best profs I've ever had. He's easy going and very dynamic in class. Sometimes he runs off on tangents but he knows the material very well. On occasions it is a little difficult to understand what he's trying to say, but if you go ask him personally he will clarify things. I liked that we could submit all our assignments online.
Dr. James always says "we are here not to trick you" but look at the last final exam and ask this question yourself. It was tricky and some of the material and examples was not covered.
I truly enjoyed having Dr. Xidos as my professor he is very nice and also humourous. Although it was annoying having the notes posted last minute each day as well as he only went over examples straight from the textbook. The final exam was extremely hard compared to other first year courses. I wouldn't be surprised if the average was around 40-45%
best prof i have had here. clear, helpful, and knows his stuff. def recommend for first year chem and any other class u can get him!!
he's really good at what he's doing. He explains it really clear. his i clickers though are somewhat unfair since he might do 10 iclicker today then none tomorrow. my advice then is always come to class ON TIME. you need textbook to get Aplus, and you really need to take a seat near him since he's not so clear and boring when youre so far from him.
Great prof. Cares about your learning and helpful outside of class. The course is no walk in the park but its chemistry. Use the student study guide and online solution manuel and do plenty of practice problems and you should be fine.
I thought he would be a good professor because he had good reviews but I can honestly say that he is very much disorganized during the lectures. His iclickers has mistakes on it and so you have to keep changing your calculations. People say he is good but I think he is okay...not the best one out there.
He was funny and very nice, however super hard to get a hold of outside his office hours. His notes were posted last minute (hour before lecture) and his examples were rushed and not well explained.
An extremely enthusiactic professor. He explains things throughly, and his notes are practically all you need for the exam (I only used txtbook for practice problems), and he takes his time going through slides (so you can keep up if you're writing in class).Occassionally makes mistakes but is happy to admit mistake when corfrected by students.
Great Professor but quite disorganized. Has some favorites and never tells you the answer, rather goes into tangents and to other dimensions. Has a weak control over large audience of students when some students start interrupting the class and making noises, he simply doesn't care, even though it distracts those that want to study.
Very helpful. He is kind to students, explains the course material very neat, easy to understand his lectures. The exams are hard though. What I like the most is that he knows exactly how to help you because he knows how you have gotten the wrong answer. He's just wise and humble, the best! And knows really well his stuff and how to explain it simple.
He's one of the better profs, but this is a hard class! Waaay harder than chem 1300. Previous exams were veryyy different than the one we had to write. It helps to have a good background in math.
He is a good prof, but way overrated! He was helpful and clear, but I just really did not enjoy the material in this class.
This is my first year of university i took this profs class from recommendations from friends Hes an excellent prof loves students great at teaching really good examples and notes which he posts online iclicker questions are fair the class is not super easy as no university class is Recommend reading the textbook and notes and following his lecture
Great proffesor. When I came into university I absolutely hated chemistry but he completely changed my mind. This is one of my favourite classes now. The course is hard but he knows how to make a class interesting and relevant.
The thing with his classes is that for the assignments you have to figure everything out on your own because you will not finish the content of the assignment before the due date. Also if you ask him questions he will not give you a clear answer he will give you very useless "clues". And well he might be a good person, but not a good teacher.
not a very good teacher, very boring. he did way to many examples of the exact same thing. he would go on and on about something you didn't even need to know so you would be taking all these notes and have to scribble them out cause there was no need for them. assignments were hard, he never finished material on time. do not recommend, choose elena
A very good prof who explains everything very well and quite thoroughly. The assignments were actually easy so long as you spent some time to learn the material on your own in addition to what you learnt in his lectures. His lectures were very clear, funny, and quite thorough, and he was always happy to help students after class.
I took 1300 and 1310 with him, if you need to get through chemistry this guy is the best!! His explanations make perfect sense and would stay after class and answer everyone's questions even if that meant staying an extra hour. I can't say enough good things about him, take first year chem with him if you can!!
Excellent
i miss his classes, and lecture notes, they were very concise and clear...
Had him in 1300 great professor one of University of Manitobas finest chemistry professor. With having that said i'm currently in 1310 I was unable to get Xidos this semester but I still attend his lectures hes really that good. In both chemistry 1300 and 1310 reading the textbook is mandatory. Xidos lectures and notes clarify any misunderstanding
He is a good professor, but I am sure the chemistry department's main goal is to make students fail, their motto "to weed out dumb students". No wonder The University of Manitoba is one of the worst in Canada. Students should be there to learn and to apply knowledge, not to learn new concepts during the exams. Shame on you...
Xidos is probably the best prof for chem 1310, but the course is still torture no matter how great your professor is
Best chem teacher the school has got. The course was just brutal, same with CHEM 1300. He made it more bearable, and all my friends read the notes he gave because they were the most helpful. Get him if you can!!!
If you can, take this course with him. Chem 1310 is a brutal course and without a good prof I probably would not have done half as well. He always stays around after class to help kids out with questions they have about the course or even with the lab component. Funny, energetic, cares about the students... what more do you need!?
Very difficult class, he does not make it any easier - he doesn't dumb down concepts, but he's very clear and caring so if you pay good attention and attend lectures you will succeed.
Decent at best
Out of all the chem profs, hes probably the best. He wont give you hints as to what may be the exam but he covers content and hes kinda funny and a really cool guy. I find it hard to listen in class when theres 256 other people around me so I used my textbook hardcore, but if you can listen in class I don't think you'd need the textbook.
Excellent prof, knows his stuff really well and will help you understand the topics as much as possible. Drinks too many energy drinks, so it can be humorous in class when he gets wired on the caffeine.
He is a really good teacher always available to answer your questions. He won't give hint on what on the exams but overall he is really good. He also did a 4 hour review session after last class where we just did Iclickers that was very helpful. It is a really hard course but just look at text and work though problems.
He taught in tandem with Gough when I did the course. The lectures he did were light years better than hers. He wrote the assignments and the bulk of the labs, so even though he rarely lectured, he was your go-to guy for any help. Pretty sure he helped me significantly on every lab. Always a bonus in any prof! Recommended!
professor Xidos cannot manage the class and his class was always chaos and also his PowerPoint was not clear and he is not available for his students
Excellent professor.
Best chemistry prof, hands down. :) Provides very good examples in-class for material that I would not be able to understand with just the textbook itself. Prepare for his iClicker questions!
Great prof! I had him for both chem 1300 and 1310. He was very helpful and the notes made sense as long as you go to class. I would recommend him to anyone taking first year chemistry.
Best prof for chem 1310. should take it with him. he helps you with the online assignments and lab. just be aware that he has a soothing voice and can put you to sleep. sit in front as possible to avoid distractions. voice can be hard to hear sometimes. overall, very helpful in and out of class! textbook wasnt helpful for me tho
Xidos is the best prof for Chem 1310. He always helped out students for labs especially. He is the most helpful prof to ask for any lab questions outside of class. The best time to see him is during the Chem help hours. I also recommend going to SI sessions if the TA is helpful.
cool dude
friendly to everybody
easiness
kind and interesting
kind and easygoing
very kind professor
One of the best and easiest to understand for this class. Cares about his students. Seems to enjoy his job and sometimes looks excited when talking about chemistry. Only down side is his voice can put you to sleep if you're not fully engaged in what he's talking about.
Awesome prof! Lectures are pretty clear and he is very enthusiastic!!!
Good teacher, not very clear because he rambles off on tangents sometimes, not very clear as to what is important in the course
I believe he's the reason why I did really good in this class. I always sit in the front and I recommend you do the same. He also has a pretty good sense of humour and explains the topics very well. I only had to read the book for the last couple chapters.
Very good prof! knows his stuff like his 5 fingers! doesn't read directly from the slides, clear voice, classes are long but he makes it more interesting be prepared for his iclicker questions. Easy B+ - A in this clas. highly recommended. got the textbook haven't used it once, textbook is useless and theres no need for it.
A great professor! His notes are very clear and easy to follow. He keeps his lectures interesting and does a great job of covering the material.
He kept the class interesting and engaging. He provided fair lecture notes, make sure to do practise problems in textbook and refer to it
Can be pretty funny, but his voice is so hard to listen to. Class can get extremely boring. He uses slides, which are good, but his examples on the over head are a mess and impossible to follow along to. I found I had to teach myself the material at home rather than from him in class. Textbook is also the biggest waste of money and isn't touched.
Definitely knows what he's talking about. Funniest prof I've had so far, really wants to help students outside of class and even sits with students right after lectures to help. Only issue I had with him was his examples in class, they were all over the place and weren't organized but wasn't impossible to follow along to. Great professor overall.
He speaks so softly and he makes mistakes frequently when he was demonstrating how to solve the questions which made me feel annoyed.
one of nice friendly professors I have met in my first year. He helped us out by answering our questions days before midterm and final exam. He is always willing to answer your question if you catch him after his lecture is done or in the help centre in Parker. Strongly recommend u to take his class
I found his class easy. I wasn't in his class originally but decided to check it out since my professor wasn't that great. He explains the material very well with a lot of detail. For the most part I thought chem was really hard until I went to his class. He includes the smallest detail which helps you understand the content overall.
I really enjoyed his class. A few of the lectures were pretty dry because of the content, but for the most part he made things entertaining. He's approachable and very helpful.
My HS chem didnt prepare me for uni level at all so i barely understood him in class. i rec watching YT vids (TONS--i rec khan) in advance bec he uses complex words at times during lectures. Got a C on my midterm so did more prac Qs, went to his office hrs at chem help. Hes very willing to help tbh but not always avail (NEVER found him in his offc)
Dr. Xidos is a great prof. His lecture notes and examples are basically the questions tested on the exams. Following his class examples are key to success.
Dr. Xidos was a really great prof and was very enthusiastic about teaching and also very funny. However, the lectures were very long and the content was difficult. I don't think Chem 1310 with any prof is EASY. By far the most difficult course I've ever taken.
James Xidos is honestly the best prof at the u of m. I wonder if he still drinks a nos energy drink every class? he's hilarious!
Very good, highly recommend for intro chem courses!
His hours at the Help Center saved me!
I found him to be all over the place in his lectures, I don't think I would have gotten anything higher than a B if I just learned from his lectures. I don't think he is the best professor for CHEM1300, but he is a funny and kind man. Accessible and easy to talk to, not condescending like most professors are.
Always made sure to answer everyone's question. He made accommodations for students who wanted to see him outside of lecture/lab too, which was nice. I don't like chemistry but he made it bearable. Would say he's the best option for a first year chem course!
Easily the worst professor iv'e had, horrible. Doesn't care about students.
One of the best profs I've had. He makes lectures interesting with the use of props and jokes. He just went out of his way to send me a scanned pdf of my white data sheets from a lab after I got home and realized I couldn't read the yellow sheets. He is very willing to help outside of class and cares about his student's success.
Class lectures are useless.
James is a very good professor for me who explains clearly and gives examples. However, it is the student who has to work to get good grades since CHEM 1310 is one of the famous hard course to deal with. Sitting in front of the class, practicing questions, attending SI sessions and going to his office are key tips to succeed.
I personally find him overrated. The midterm and final were brutal. His lectures do not prepare you at all for the exam. He spends a lot of time on very simple concepts and does not go into much detail w/ some of the harder material. The textbook is your best choice for studying.
Dr. Xidos is one of the best first year chem profs. You still have to work hard, but he is an excellent explainer.
Was a friendly kind prof that got key concepts across. He was accessible and easy to approach for questions.
WOULD GO BACK 15 SLIDES BEFORE EVERY LECTURE TO REVIEW, SUCH A WASTE OF TIME, RAMBLES ON AND ON, VERY BORING
He goes back 12 slides per class so we just sit there for 15 min listening to the same thing. Kinda boring
Really funny, really nice guy. Explains concepts very thoroughly, and explains each step in his examples. The lectures do tend to get pretty dry, and him reviewing concepts we already went over for 15+ minutes at the beginning of every lecture only adds to the dryness. But overall, a pretty good prof.
He is a great prof but still not enough for the intensity of chem 1310. His examples are too easy and so are the textbook questions, SI is a must for this class to know how to do questions. He answers questions and takes time to explain hem which is really nice though, but overall this class is just very difficult. He is the best prof for this class
Amazing prof. Very helpful if you communicate with him through email or use his office hours.
He is extremely boring. Hard to pay attention to, and I find that just reading the textbook explained the concepts better for me. Also, the labs he made for this course don't seem fair- too much to do without a partner in only 3 hours. If you can take this course with another prof, DO IT.
Very nice guy and always accessible if you have a question. He moves very slowly however, doing repetitive examples and therefore makes it hard to focus in his class. He also has a tendency to ramble. That being said I think he's overall a good professor, especially if you like the prof doing a lot of examples.
worst experience with a prof I've ever had. He went through the content of the course extremely slow, about three slides from a powerpoint every lecture, and the last month of the term was him cramming multiple units into far too little time. No calculations were done in lecture, even though tests were 90% calculations. would not recommend.
Dr. Xidos is a great guy who really cares about his students success! If you have a question he will make sure to go through it thoroughly so you not only understand the answer, but the concepts as well. I would most definitely recommend him as a prof for CHEM 1300.
Xidos is a great guy and super funny but is an incredibly confusing professor. He over complicates nearly all concepts and teaches you more than you need to learn. You would think that would be an advantage but it truly is not. Spends countless lectures going over meaningless information and skims through important stuff. Take with smirnova!!!
it's very easy to tell that he loves to teach and is very passionate about chemistry however the lectures can be extremely boring from his slow pace which bores many people. Although the man puts in 110% effort to clarify questions students may have so your use of him mostly comes from there. Next best thing if you cant get smirnova
Super kind prof and you can definitely tell he's very passionate about chemistry, but his lectures can be quite boring as he's very slow paced and takes 10 minutes of the class reviewing what we talked about last class. Unfortunately, he doesn't give many examples. He has very good powerpoint slides though!
Pretty good prof. Super funny guy and clearly loves chemistry and teaching it. Probably the best choice for chem 1310
Dr. Xidos is clearly excited about the material he teaches and makes it understandable for students. While CHEM1310 is by no means an easy course, taking it with Dr. Xidos makes it manageable and fascinating. His students are his first priority and he does all he can to help them. I highly recommend taking first-year chemistry with him if you can.
He is a nice person and funny guy but as a prof, I can say he is just a bit higher than the average. His standard is high, thinks everyone knows everything on final final is hella hard. But I dont regret having him as my chem prof.
The best Chem prof forthis class hands down. I recommend taking James Xidos he is a nice a funny guy.
chem 1310 is a very difficult class no matter what prof you take it with but im glad i had it with him. he does lots of example questions and is always available for extra help when you need. the final was nothing like the midterm and they dont curve grades at all anymore. take this class with him but be read to die anyways chem 1310 is hell
chemistry was hard , xidos knows his concepts but is not so good at conveying them! FInal was hard, and made no sense and nothing we'd seen before. It was worth 60%.
This course is very hard, no matter who you take it with. Hes not the best prof but hes definitly not the worst. He can be monotone at times but tries to be enthusiastic. Go to class and SI, trust me itll help. Hes also very accessible after class time if you have questions.
I got an A+ so Im unbiased. So boring, fell asleep every single class. Not a passionate prof; take it with Kuchison. He brings an energy drink to every lecture because he puts himself to sleep. He can't explain concepts, and goes through unrelated calculus b/c hes "nerdy"; seriously, he needs to stick to the material and get a better way to explain
He seems to know the material well but can't explain it in a way that actually teaches anything. Isn't very clear on what you have to know and what you don't because he keeps talking about more advanced things. Teaches in a very slow boring manner. I started going to the other lectures which was the greatest decision I made for the course
This guy is a big time nerd. His teaching methods are really lazy. He does not give you the tools to succeed. Just figures people have unlimited time to study. Often rambles about stuff that doesnt matter. Tests you on stuff that isnt required for the course like organic chemistry structures. Take chemistry at the u of w.
Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I personally do not like his teaching style and there is material that he never covers in class that are on the tests. I learned more from Khan Academy than I did from him.
Chem 1300 is super hard, and I think thats by design as a huge demographic needs to take it in their degree. Xidos was friendly and went slow, and gave solid advice about what was important and what was not.
He gets boring very quickly. Didn't go a week without falling asleep in one of his classes. He explains some stuff really well, but straight up doesn't cover others. He spent 2 classes on Schrodingers equation which didn't show up on any tests. I respect him for trying to be interesting, but not everyone finds chem as interesting as he does.
Chem 1300 is a really hard class and Professor Xidos does a great job of explaining the theory part of the course. - Passionate but sometimes rambles/is boring - Does not spend enough time on the math questions- which are the majority of the test questions - Easy to understand - Read the textbook and attend every lecture or be lost - Posts Notes
Not the best teacher. He rambles in lectures and rarely does example questions. At the U of M, first-year chem students aren't important.
Xidos was a really good prof, he related a lot of aspects of chem to the real world and showed many physical examples of theoretical stuff that was hard to visualize.
Boring. Monotone. Lifeless. He is very nice but the combination of the depressing Armes lecture halls and his teaching skills - not a good combination. I found it very hard to understand his elaboration of the course content. Never answered my questions properly and had to seek help from other profs. UM Chem department faculty is the worst
Would sometimes go off on tangents that weren't on required material.
Very boring, goes way off topic, hard to listen to. Don't recommend.
Theres no lectures to teach you what to do. During those time slots, a couple examples are gone over. Youre expected to read the textbook and understand what to do. Very discouraging
Xidos is an exceptionally skilled professor. He knows his material extremely well and handles the 300 student online lecture with ease. He brings humor into lectures and is extremely patient with students asking questions, even when they are basic or tangential. CHEM1310 is a notoriously difficult class but his presentation makes the content simple
Nice guy, but shouldn't teach. I've never had a professor that gets distracted and goes on long-random tangents like this man. We 're talking 20 minutes per lecture of explaining things, not part of the course. I think it makes him feel smart. He also does no examples, literally just reads out formulas. He's all about the textbook, teaches nothing.
You really need the textbook if you're taking him since you'll do a lot of the learning yourself. However during class time he'll go over the textbook and give a bunch of examples and explanations to better help you apply what you learned. He has a great energy and his class feels relaxing, I barely stressed the whole semester.
Dr Xidos is a great professor and person, i feel as if the online learning did take a toll on his teaching though, we seemed to do a lot of iclicker in class and although he would go over topics sometimes it would be a little unclear as he would rush sometimes. overall he is a very fair teacher, his quizzes are tough but fair
Dr. Xidos is a very good prof! He was really good at explaining concepts and engaging the class. He had lots of office hours and extra class time which gave ample opportunity to ask him questions. Quizzes and exams were fair and similar to the examples done in class. Overall I would recommend him to anyone wanting to take this class.
Really made online learning fun and somewhat manageable
Chem 1310 is a difficult course, and Prof Xidos did a very poor job teaching it. His lectures went over concepts while the tests and exams were math based. I found that i had to teach myself the majority of the material to pass. Reading and doing practice problems from the text was a better use of time than going to class! Nice guy but meh prof.
James is a good guy but kind of a mess. He makes quite of few mistakes but at least he admits it . Ultra sunrise flavored monster is not a replacement for sleep.
Dr Xidos is one of the few options for early chemistry courses. He cares for his students, and grades exams very fair His lectures were not very interesting to me personally, he has a monotone voice, and makes many mistakes, but he is swift with emails, and is clear for materials on exams, and assignments. Study outside of class and you'll do fine
Never replied to a single one of my emails over the entirety of the course so finding answers to questions was pretty impossible
Dr Xidos is awesome. He's able to explain tricky concepts in simple terms and is super helpful responding to emails! He made online learning really fun. For online learning, class is mostly practice questions, so I had to do a lot of prep but it really helped me grasp the content! You can tell that he wants his students to succeed. :)
Great at explaining concepts, gives good examples. He is organized and his classes consisted of iclicker questions. Every single class - iclicker. I read the textbook to prepare for them. The textbook used for this class is the G.O.A.T. Super informative, problems done are super clear, very easy to read, lots of pictures. Textbook helped me alot!
Dr. Xidos is absolutely fantastic! Chemistry 1310 is not a super easy course, but Dr. Xidos has a way of explaining concepts and breaking things down. His office hours are super helpful and really made a difference for me, so I highly recommend attending them when you can. Definitely a solid choice as a first-year chem prof!
Xidos is a fine prof. He's one of the best in first year chem, but that's not saying much. His teaching style is loose and casual. I enjoyed the lectures. He's friendly and will try his best to explain a concept to you after class if you email him.
This professor is clearly very knowledgeable, and appears to really care about being a good teacher. The only issue is he struggles with communication sometimes. Aside from that I enjoyed having him as a prof
He's good at explaining the course topics and is funny at times so lectures aren't terrible. If you need help outside of class he's not bad at it, just takes a little while to respond to you. For a chemistry prof he's one of the better ones imo.
Dr. Xidos is a very knowledgeable prof and a funny one at times. He does care about his students and wants them to do well. He is a bit slow at responding to emails but he is accessible for office hours. Overall Id say hes one of the better first year profs in the chem department, but thats not saying much.
Chemistry is such a difficult course and Xidos made me really it. He clearly cares for the students and wants them all to do well, and can be pretty funny at times. I highly recommend taking the course with him.
Professor Xidos is a great first year chem prof. He stays back every class for more than an hour to answer additional questions, and is always willing to help during office hours. Sometimes he can tend to go really slow explaining a concept because he goes beyond the scope of the class explaining things we dont need to know which was annoying.
James does a great job of explaining the material, thats why you shouldn't skip but he also uploads a video of class so if you cant avoid missing you dont miss much. i really recommend keeping up with the textbook readings so you have your questions ready for class. He will stay as long as you have questions
G.O.A.T.! Accommodating, cares about his students (he apologized to us since the course was affected by the strike) and gave really amazing lectures (he even uses balloons to explain molecular geometry and it's more understandable). He's also willing to stay after class for questions. Looking forward to taking CHEM 1110 with him this term!
Was hard class, James tried hard to teach and was pretty good at showing us math stuff, but since material is just hard it wasnt easy. He was probably one of the best out of the few profs teaching, so if your required to take Chem 1100 you should probably try and get him.
Dr. Xidos is a great prof. He stays after class for any extra questions. Definitely the nicest prof i've had all year. Mastering assignments along with textbook questions are assigned for practice. Very well-organized course.
Dr. Xidos and Dr. Kuchison are great choices for intro chem. Dr. Xidos has a real passion for trying to get us to understand concepts, and puts a lot of work into ensuring we have everything we need to succeed. He is always trying to come up with new ways to teach things, and even if you hate chem, at least you will have a nice prof :)
I love his personality and enthusiasm for what he teaches. He was very generous with his time when answering questions after class. Marks were given generously. The course, however, was annoyingly organized and a lot of work. Sometimes Dr. Xidos would get carried away talking about a topic not on the exam. A lot of his lecture went over my head.
Dr. Xidos is nice as a person, but I don't think he is a great lecturer. This is because his lectures can get very slow (as in he speaks very slow) and uninteresting. As well, his handwriting is barely legible and his lecture slides are difficult to follow. I recommend taking CHEM 1110 with an energetic and organized instructor instead!
Dr. Xidos gave great lectures and was really easy to understand. His grading criteria is great for those who don't necessarily test well and he was very accessible outside of class and loved answering questions. I would strongly recommend him for someone taking university level chemistry for the first time.
Had the chance to take CHEM 1100 and 1110 with him and always made me understand chemistry more than ever! Lectures were crystal clear and his pdfs were accessible before the lecture so you can print and read them in advance. Almost answer all questions in class and stayed after class almost every time for questions (sometimes more than 2 hours).
Chicken scratch handwriting and super messy. Had this class on WebEx due to COVID. His doc cam was super bad quality and blurry. Mix that with him writing with his fist. I just stopped attending the online lectures and read the textbook instead.
Chicken scratch handwriting and super messy. Had this class on WebEx due to COVID. His doc cam was super bad quality and blurry. Mix that with him writing with his fist. Couldn't understand a thing. I just stopped attending the online lectures and read the textbook instead.
I am not the greatest at chem, however... Reading the text and doing practice questions is a must you will not pass if you don't do that kind of stuff. His lectures are ok... he wears a mask the entire time which makes it really difficult to understand hat he is saying even with his mic on. His examples are useless bc his writing is illegible.
A decent prof, he knew what he was talking about. Lectures could have been better since he mostly read off his slides, but was very helpful when going over examples on WebEx. Although homework is optional, DO IT!!! Final and midterm were hard, but not impossible. If you do your homework and go back over it when he posts it you'll be fine.
He's a great professor, but his voice is so soothing that I found myself on the edge of falling asleep each class. He does study halls, which is very helpful. I really recommend you go to them. However, this was the first class that I did that I didn't get an A so try to listen as best you can in lectures and do the textbook questions!!!
SUPER boring lectures, but occasionally the things he says WILL show up on the exam. I almost fell asleep one time.
He is super passionate about chemistry. I wish I could take his course again. He has study hall every week and you can always ask questions there. Even if you did not attend, he records all the study halls. He even made a study hall to go over all the midterm questions. He is amazing!!!!!!
HAS STUDY HALLS WHICH ARE MOST USEFUL FOR PRACTICE. He may be boring to listen to but he explains chemistry in a way that you will understand it forever. I do agree that you will fall asleep in his class but he teaches so well and detailed that you would not want to miss a thing since 90% of things he says in class come in the exam! Pick him.
Great prof, had study halls twice a week which were goated for learning how to answer questions and securing a good grade. While his lectures may have been a bit boring, it was just the material. Lots of students who didn't pay attention in-class and probably were salty due to the incoming bad grade are the only type to rate this great prof poorly.
Hard to understand during lectures and often gets off track with information that is not testable. HIS NOTES ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE EXAM. Neither are the assignments. Even if you do everything you are supposed to and work tirelessly, you still will have trouble on the exam. Not many other choices for profs so good luck.
Very knowledgeable but was very hard to understand the material during lectures, he always would go off topic with things that wouldn't be on the exam and would never explain CLEARLY how to perform certain calculations and course theory. Exams are nothing like the material you learn in lecture.
LOVED HIM. He was a very fair and considerate professor. Did an excellent job explaining concepts, and covered all the material in the textbook in his lecture slides. However, I would still recommend reading the textbook, as it really helps reinforce a lot of the concepts. Tests are fair and pretty easy IMO. Wish he taught 1110 as well.
Professor Xidos elevates CHEM 1100 and 1110. Engaging and humorous, his teaching shines. Exams manageable with effort, but textbook reading is vital. Occasionally, mask affects clarity. Overall, knowledgeable and engaging chemistry prof.
Unlike Angela K, he is literally the best. I love him so much and he really cares about every student. Take your courses with him !!!
James is by far the best option for someone looking to take chem 1100. His midterms are fair and he prepares you well for them. Of course you will still have to put in effort outside of class, If you pay attention in his lectures and do the assignments you will be fine.
Xidos is very good at teaching this chemistry course. His lecture were very knowledgeable and answers any confusion you may have without even asking. The tests were fair and directly based on lecture and textbook. Overall prepares you very well for the exams.
Dr. Xidos's lectures sometimes made me fall asleep since his voice is so calming. Despite this, he is very knowledgeable about chemistry and would provide clarity in study halls!
I took CHEM 1100 during covid online. James's writing was often illegible and his lectures were often boring. Not a bad prof overall, just his writing was chickenscratch
You can tell while hes teaching he really cares about the material and is actually interested in it which made it more enjoyable to come to class. He is super good with answering questions in and outside of class and it really approachable. I found the class easy to follow along with and moves at a good pace!
Great guy that genuinely cares for the students and about the material he teaches. Partly biased because I'm a chem major, but he's seriously one of the best the department has to offer.
Best prof for intro chem Very great teacher Didn't even study just attended his lectures and passed with a C+ Great attitude
Professor Xidos may have a calming voice, but his lectures are packed with valuable chemistry knowledge. While attendance is mandatory, the study halls are a game-changer. I found Unstuck study super helpful for exam prep alongside the textbook.
Absolute legend. So enthusiastic about chem and all things. Tests are made according to slides and topics covered in class. Love this guy.
Doesn't actually teach, he just reads off the slides Doesn't explain how to do problems or even help prepare you for the tests or exams I had to drop the class because he was so horrible
He is extremely accessible outside of class. The study hours he hosts are informative and especially helpful for preparing for tests. Brings in visual examples to better explain, not just reading off slides. Many assignments to boost your grade, wants you to succeed in his class. He is a bit monotoned, but overall he is a great professor!
Cool guy, always had his zero cal energy drink with him, pretty approachable.Had 3 tests, 6 assignments and 6 self reflections. I mean the assignments were literally free marks if you had the general concept down. In terms of teaching, was pretty good at explaining everything, although intro to thermo was a bit iffy.
He is obviously very passionate about what he is teaching which shows in his lectures. His writing is incredibly difficult to read, and includes a lot of extra notes that aren't in his lecture slides. He often goes on tangents drawing other diagrams and trying to explain things that aren't in detail in his slides so attendance is very important.
He was easy to reach outside of class and explained topics from lecture in depth. Overall great prof for a difficult course.
James is super passionate about chemistry and explains things in such a way that makes sense, even for difficult concepts. He hosts study halls near exam time to help prepare his students and provides lots of resources for studying. Pay attention and come to lectures and you will have no problems. Xidos is the goat!
James is the best prof for this course. He hosts study halls each week, and they are extremely helpful. Attendance is not 100% mandatory, but his lectures are very helpful and he does lots of examples
Was an awesome prof, clearly cares about his students understanding on subjects. Always would let us know when things were actually relevant for exams or not. He used ALOT of in class examples, though, so if you miss one class your screwed (he also doesn't record his lectures so you have to be there.)
Really nice man. If you take him just make sure you take notes in class
Dr. Xidos is amazing! If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it! He is well prepared for class, always has notes/slides online, has a great sense of humor, and is very caring. He responds to emails very quickly, and with detail. He has a great passion and understanding of the content in his classes. I would 100% take his class again.
He posts his lectures but the course was pretty lecture heavy so definitely attend class. He's entertaining and good at explaining.
He's known as the best chem prof at the UofM. Course is structured in a way where it's very easy to pass, like if you fail change your degree. Midterms were straightforward, final was hard tho. Very hard to reach via email.
Very difficult class in my opinion, sometimes felt lost during lectures. Dr. Xidos is very helpful and relates to students but the format for the class just wasn't my favourite. Heavy course load, but lots of ways to bump up grade easily.
He's nice but doesn't really give many examples style questions.
Has amazing office hours (especially review sessions before exams). Great at explaining! Text book questions are great practice for the class. And loves his orange monster energy drinks lol.
He was good, I had him for both intro chems. Beware he is a bit unorganized and kinda freestyles it. For this course everything was doable (2 midterms, 15% each. Free assignments and extra stuff for the rest), but the final exam was just way too hard imo.
imo the best first year chem prof! Very passionate about his field and eager to help answer questions outside of class. He even let me join some of his lectures for chem1100 when he wasn't my prof! Very glad I had him for chem1110, he does many examples in class and summarizes topics very well. A lot more open to questions than the other chem profs
Highkey best teacher/prof i ever had
He is hands down one of the best profs Ive ever had. He makes lectures very engaging which helps with learning. very approachable and silly. I actually look forward to this class because of his energy and passion for the subject. loves his energy drinks (esp orange monsters)
He is so sweet! One of the best profs I've had so far. I loved coming to class because of the way he teaches. I found his lectures to be very entertaining. You could tell that he loves teaching this subject. I usually find chemistry to be somewhat difficult but he made it easier. Overall, very happy I took this course. :)
James Xidos cares about his students. A policy of his is that if you outperform your overall midterm average on the final, your final grade overwrites that of your midterms. He really knows his chemistry but sometimes he gets too carried away/excited, which is confusing. The first test is the hardest. Overall great prof!
James is truly one of the best profs i had so far but the final was tuff but fair tbh. He's very understanding and summarizes what he's saying really well. He also goes over and reviews the chapter and is always open to questions. Just make sure you review the content before class because it really helps
Very nice guy, tests are straight forward, first one is harder than the rest.
Rarely showed up to class, but tests felt fair and he prepares you well for each test. The first test was the hardest from the rest as it contains a good portion of the material. Still received an A.
Super awesome prof, cares about his students as much as he cares about his energy drinks if not more; and let me tell you he goes driving around Canada looking for some of his fav energy drinks. Course layout is in your favour. You will succeed with flying colours if you put in the work.
He da goat my grade tanked because of the final exam but if u do good on the final exam u will do good in his class.
Pretty light class. Slept through most of his lectures tbh. Great guy fr.
he cool but lectures get lowk boring sometimes
he was good, tests and final exam were fair
makes pretty much any topic intuitive and easy to understand. pretty much impossible not to get 100 on assignments cos theyre rounded up so much, tests and exams are all multiple choice. only thing is the textbook is mandatory. overall pretty bearable even if you dont like chem
