A very good teacher and instructor. Generally fun, very helpful, and clear. The course requires a great amount of work and studying, so attendance is mandatory.
She would not be clear in what she is talking about not willing to help got mad and made a huge speech in class because someone sneezes and some one else said bless you.
I really liked Beavers a lot as a person! But her teaching style didn't work for me. Her exams were very hard and you basically have to read the chapters word for word to do well on the exam. The final is ridiculously hard as well. She's really nice though and very helpful if you go to office hours. This class is also VERY time consuming
I had Beavers for lecture. Read the book. Know the book. Pretty much all you see on the exam is word for word from the book. Memorize it. Make it your best friend. You'll get an A. Come to class so you'll see the genetic disorders that arent mentioned in the book (she asks about those on the exam)Anything she writes on the board is on the exam.
At first I thought she was pretty bad, but after this semester I realized that there's nothing wrong with her. You just need to know the material inside and out to do well on exams and practicals. If you get a bad grade it's your own fault for not studying enough or studying the right way.
Not the best professor out there. I wish Devany taught Bio 6. Beavers is an amazing person I would say, but she is a HORRIBLE professor! She reads her slides word for word during lecture. Doesn't explain much. Her exams are VERY difficult. Doesn't give enough opportunities for students to succeed.
As a fond admirer of the life sciences, I will even say that this class is tough. HOWEVER, not because of the professor, but because of the complex detail of the material. Beavers tries her best with all that you need to know. Go to lecture, don't put off studying, know genetic disorders, and DO THE STUDY GUIDES. I worked hard and earned my A!
Not a good professor. Reads slides word for word, and is not knowledgeable. Will answer your question by telling you to read the text. She's great at genetics, not General Bio. Study guides help, but you must read the book. Tests are really long. She's not kidding when she says you must dedicate your life to this class.
Excellent presenter, clear and very excited about the material. Made the class fun and the material interesting. Very patient with foolish questions... Could be a plus or minus. Always available to answer questions and review materials. Would take her again in a minute!
SUPER NICE, LOVES ANSWERING QUESTIONS!! Extremely EASY bio 3 class, Gives study guide that helps A LOT with the exams, Labs are very helpful.... DO ALL of the study guide!! Study guide was mostly on lecture notes, I almost never used the book but there are some times that I really needed it. BTW, know the term definitions as is written in notes!
A lot of people come into this class expecting it to be spoon-fed information and are disappointed when they're not. Most of the students that are taking the class are premeds and are disappointed to find out that biology is not the right major for them. Hardest class I have ever taken but Beavers is really great. You have to study A LOT!
Average, but makes exams harder than need be. Only 3 exams of 6 chapters each and exams are long with more questions than most classes. 2nd exam very few finished early and left, then she tried to defend the length of the exam. The slides aren't available, instead the text is ripped to a word doc, bizarre. Likable, but not a good teacher.
I took her Biology 3 class in the summer, and was a bit overwhelmed with how much material we had to absorb. Overall she is really organized and makes you look forward to come to lectures. She offered the power points and study guides online, so if you study and understand the material you're fine. Definitely would recommend taking her!!
Really, her lecture notes are everything. But you can't understand them unless you attend her lectures. The textbook is helpful when you don't understand particular concepts. Dr. Beavers truly wants everyone to have a good understanding of everything. There is also a lot of in class extra credit at random times in lecture and lab so always be there
I had Beavers for Winter Intersession and she was amazing ! You HAVE to go to all her classes to understand the material and the book can help clarify things but for me wasn't really necessary! Her tests are all based on her lecture so this is why coming everyday can get you an A ! Her study guides for tests are also very helpful so use them!
Really struggled in her Genetics class. She is a super nice lady, but does not teach you the material off the CD or book homework, which is the bulk of the testable material for the exam. I studied quite a bit for this class and still did not do well. Prepare to work extremely hard, where you have to self-teach yourself everything.
I took her for winter and she is amazing! All her jokes were funny and her method of teaching was super fun and easy for me to learn. I got a B. Prepare to work hard but overall her study guides help and she makes learning fun!
She was such a great professor! She made everything interactive and was very open to questions. Lab practicals are definitely difficult, but she makes them approachable and will go over ANYTHING in office hours, so use them.
She is funny, attendance is mandatory & do the study guide. The exams will have all the disorders that she mentions in lecture.I enjoyed taking her class, but I did have to study everyday & we took a quiz everyday in labs. We had 3 exams plus final. Lowest lab/exam get dropped. Every point counts, so try to score high. Great course!
I took her for winter and her lectures were very helpful but also veryyyy long. Best way to get an A is go to lectures and read the book. I personally had background in bio so I was able to miss some lectures and still get an A
Easy A. This winter course is inspiring and straightforward. Professor Beavers is amazing, take her!
Professor Beavers is amazing! She's so funny and she makes learning fun. You definitely have to work for your grade, but you learn so much. If you're willing to learn and work hard, take this class. If you want an easy A with this teacher, not gonna happen. Print all notes. I got an A by doing notecards and doing ALL QUESTIONS ON THE STUDY GUIDE.
Beavers was great and she gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit so take them! The class is hard, and a good background in gen and ochem would be very helpful. You'll have to work for your grade, and lab practicals will be very diffucult, but study and ask questions during office hours and you'll be fine
She shows slides & explains some, but doesn't spoon feed, so pre-meds beware. You must read chapters at least twice! I got an A because I like biology & enjoy reading the book. Gives you a taste of what upper division is like at UCLA! Main advantages are extra credit & high use of MC questions. Scores are posted online so you can track ur progress.
The class is boring at the beginning but it actually gets fun towards the end. She's an awesome professor, I disliked her very much at the beginning but towards the end I liked her. This is a really hard class but its doable as long as you read the book, and study your butt off. every point counts in her class. Try not to lose any points.
Amazing Professor! I never had Biology before and took a risk of taking Biology for majors. She explains everything so clearly and gives a lot of extra credit. She also shares her experiences from genetic counseling which makes class even more interesting. Best Professor for Biology!
Prof. Beavers will take her time answering your questions to make sure you understand. Her lecture notes and exam study guides were very helpful and as long as you read and understand her lecture notes it will help you with the study guides which will help you in your exams. Book was not needed. Study her detailed lecture notes! You'll pass!
This was an easy class if you show up and pay attention. She goes strictly by the syllabus and as long as you stick to the study guides before an exam you should pass. I bought the book for this class but didn't even end up using it just went off the lecture notes and study guide. No homework either. Would recommend.
Take her if you don't mind slow lectures. She just reads off the slides, but will gladly answer questions and provide clarifications if you ask. She posts grades on her site so you can track your progress and there are lots of quizzes that are based on the book. This class is a lot of work, so read and don't miss class.
She is a very good professor and cares that you understand the material. I found her class very fair, her lecture test resemble her study guides and her practicals are a bit more difficult for some people. She offers an almost absurd amount of extra credit in her test and gives many extra credit opportunities. If you study hard you will get an A.
She is really nice and cares about all of her students. Don not get on her bad side at all though. She gives a lot of extra credit in her class which bumps your final score by more than three percent. Make sure you read the book and study a lot for her practicals and you should be fine. I had a guaranteed A in the class. I will miss you professor
Great professor! She cares for her students and gives plenty of extra credit.
She's an easy Professor. She wants everyone to do good. She gives you her notes online to print out so don't fret about writing. Her tests are pretty funny when you look at the answers. It's multiple choice and a few matching questions but not too hard. I never bought a textbook just the lab manual and you are all good to go.
Professor Beavers is really nice. Very inspiring. You cant just expect to get an A on her class. She wants you to earn it. Take her, and you will be prepared for your future. She is the most caring professor I have ever taken.
Her lectures are very fast paced. Each lecture is a different chapter. Reading the textbook beforehand helps a lot( lots of info, compact) Thoroughly going over each question from the exam study guides she posts was extremely helpful. Some exam questions come straight from the lecture and cannot be found in the book, so daily attendance is key.
Best biology professor. Biology 6 is a hard subject but she made it really easy for us. If you take her class, you need to attend the class, print out (or edit) her lecture notes and add information to the lecture notes while she is lecturing, study from it, and make sure that you understand the related figure from the book, and you will get an A.
After finishing her class, I still was seeing her in my nightmares with her tough and irrelevant exams. There are three exams+ finals. In her exam you will find the questions that are never covered either in her lectures and in the textbook. I guess she brought those questions from her board exam for becoming a genetic counselor.
She is very inspirational to hate Biology forever in your whole life. Take her because she boost your GPA from 4.00 to 1.95.
Don't take her unless you don't care about your GPA and transferring. She makes her exams hard such as Board Certification Exam. I remembered she wanted to take our finger prints under our Scranton. AT least, you are getting ready for board exams:):):):)
Just like any other class, if you want a good grade you have to earn it. You can tell she is very passionate about Biology. I took her over the Summer, and I learned so much. I'm not sure if she does this in her other classes, but she gave us study guides for the test and that definitely helped. :) Just Study! Great teacher, would take again.
I was scared to take her after reading some of these reviews. I had her for Bio3 in the summer session, her lectures are heavy, but her tests are not really hard. Use YouTube for clarification as shes not that good at explaining cycles like photosynthesis or Krebs. Overall an easy A if you study but I wouldnt take her for Bio6.
Let me start off by saying this. This will be THE MOST time consuming course you will ever take. Professor Beavers is as strict as it gets. If you are prepared to get a C or lower, go ahead and take this course. But if you are one to shoot for a good grade, I recommend you look into another Bio professor.
this professor dont care about students. the study guide doesnt help at all. her exams are stupid. she expect you to write an essay in her first two exam while you stiil need to answer the rest of the exam. she gave to much infor that makes you go crazy. her lab practical are dumb. she doent like to give the test back to study. dont take her class.
Professor Beavers is honestly one of the hardest classes I've ever taken at Pierce, and although it was really hard I enjoyed her talks of being a genetic counselor. My best advice is take the class if you are ready to READ, and memorize different cell structures, DNA, plants, biotech, genetics problems, test essays, and a lot of studying. OFFICE
Honest review: Professor Beavers is a great Professor, she is really passionate and it shows. She gives study guides, extra credit, and curves the exam so if you study you should earn an A. Her labs practicals were tough, I recommend taking pictures of everything each lab. She is super strict, but if you study you should be fine
Ive known her since bio 3 and bio 6, and just happens that she was my prof for both classes, so taking genetics with her again should be okay. Genetics is an overall hard subject, b/c its a continuation of bio 6 on steroids. But if I have to tell you something, shes a different person in genetics. This is her specialty. Study hard, youll be ok
Professor Beavers is one of the fairest professors I've encountered. The study guides tell you exactly what you need to focus on for exams and quizzes. Very little assigned hw, so it is up to you to stay on track. Extremely helpful during office hours. Lots of extra credit opportunities to raise your grade. Very jovial and open. Great professor.
Terrible professor. Always goes off topic in lecture to discuss her family and useless information. Lab practicals are unfair to students and impossibly difficult and time constrained. Labs are not organized whatsoever. Power points unavailable to students. Does not know answers to many questions students ask her.
She follows the rules and keeps it fair. Her exams are long and she likes to test you on details from lecture, so attendance is crucial. Exams are curved and she offered a few points of extra credit on every exam but the final. She also curves the exams. Do the exam study guides. She can be a little blunt at times, but overall I enjoyed her class.
Awful professor, has zero compassion. As someone said, she could never answer questions that were asked. Probably because all she is capable of is reading off her slides. Exam study guides are somewhat helpful, but not enough. Practicals are extremely difficult. Curves are hardly helpful. I always managed w bad professors, but trust me on this one.
This is the hardest class I have taken but if you put in the work you will learn a lot. I recommend taking it a semester you have a lighter load - studying for this class felt like a full time job! Professor Beavers may be a difficult professor but shes not mean. Read the book and do chapter practice problems before quizzes!
Jamie may seem personable outside of class, but looks can be deceiving. She was rude and regularly insulted students when they would ask a question and would seldomly answer questions in lab. There was no curve at all (A was 89.88%). Test averages in the 40-50. Made class more difficult then it needed to be. Workload was insane. AVOID AT ALL COST
AMAZING professor. Biology is my favorite subject, but by no means am I a genius. If you listen and actively take notes, it'll be a breeze. Lab was insane, made me feel like a real scientist for the first time! Very kind. One classmate was stalking me so I went to her and she did everything she could to make me feel safe, will never forget that.
Took Bio06 over the Spring20, during the COVID-19 the entire class when on Canvas. However we were obligated to purchase a camera because we are being Proctored by the tutors and professor Jamie. It was weird, becuase there was ppl looking at you, and ur screen was all being recored. you were not able to open up tabs! 120 questions for 60 minutes!
If you are going to take Genetics with Prof Beavers make sure you do the assigned problems and interactive CD! While they are not mandatory, the quizzes are a random assortment of the exact same problems. She's a lot more relaxed during genetics as opposed to bio 6. The speaker presentations are very interesting. Overall, super fun class!
Do not take this class. It was basically like teaching yourself. The tests were extremely hard and the study guides weren't any help either. The assignments were pointless. You have to study a lot in order to do well which is understandable of course, but she gives a workload as if students aren't taking other classes.
ONE MINUTE PER QUESTION EXAMS. 70 questions, 70 minutes. Since going online she has made all of the lectures be Asynchronous and could be 2-4 hours per lecture. She also does not use Canvas for grading so you have to guess/estimate. She posts her grade book the day after each lecture or lab exam.
Terrible Professor. Do not take her for any biology classes. Since the online class transition, she just spits out lecture that can last 2 hours long. Her Exams are impossible, no matter how hard you study, you won't see any Improvement. She gives out exams based on the labs are they are insanely tough. 1 minute per question. Never recommending her
The assignments given are extremely long, and you MUST remember every tiny detail if you would like to do well on exams. The exams are about 1 minute/question, which normally is fine, but most of the questions make you select multiple choices from a list of 20 options. Please save your GPA, dont take this terrible class. Wish Pierce had more prof's
I was excited at first to take her class but now I wish It wasn't during Covid-19 & online. She post lectures that can be 2-3 hrs, that u won't retain. she grades really harshly and if you don't complete an assignment the exact way she wants, you WONT get credit. Grading is basically all based on exam scores on 85 question in 80 min exam.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Worst professor at pierce! Never felt so stressed with a class before. Lectures are soooo long. The worst part, 1 minute per question on exams and you can't even skip through the questions to answer the ones you know first! I'm not an F student but this is the first class I'm failing...
Bio6 is a hard class that requires you to memorize and UNDERSTAND a LOT of information. That being said, shes a fantastic professor who will give you an the tools to get an A. She has so many cool stories about her work! Just thoroughly complete the study guides, do all the extra credit and study your notes often. I loved her class!
This class is very challenging, yet a good grade is attainable if you are proactive and put in a lot of effort. The lectures/labs are asynchronous, but I would highly recommend completing everything to do well on her exams, even though they are very time consuming. I found her office hours very helpful and she is also very responsive to emails.
PART 1 This class is a lot of busywork. Her lectures 2.5 hours long on average and she expects you to memorize the notes that go along with it for the exam. Overall the class isn't too bad, it's just very time-consuming. She doesn't understand that students have other classes and believes hers is the most important one.
She is the absolute worst Professor Ive had. Ive taken classes that are much more difficult than the material that we learn in bio 6 but for some reason this is the HARDEST class I have ever taken. She has no compassion and disregards student concerns. Very limited test taking time and extremely long useless lectures.
The worst professor I have ever taken a class with, gives long exams with one minute per question and no room to toggle between questions so you can't go back and check your work. When she received complaints by many students who failed an exam due to her time limit, she didn't open up room for discussion, blamed her students and continued her day.
Im usually a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA and couldn't do well in this class for the life of me. When you try and talk to her about it she only responds by basically saying you are the one doing something wrong when the average test scores are fails and clearly she is the one doing something wrong. IM WARNING YOU, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
This class is very challenging. The lectures are super long and filled with tons of information. Her quizzes are based on an interactive CD guide so they were pretty easy. She doesn't allow people to toggle between questions on exams and it's one minute per question. She seems like a nice person, but be prepared to roll up your sleeves and work.
Wonderful, amazing, inspirational professor. Yes lectures are super long, but thats because genetics is a lot to learn. Gave short time on quizzes because she would assign questions we were supposed to have done on our own. Tough exams, so make sure to STUDY. Dont take this class if youre taking other difficult with it. Very understanding though
Amazing professor! Really long lectures, but genetics is a lot of information. Quizzes were very short timed, but thats because she would assign questions from study guides that we were supposed to complete on our own. Exams are pretty difficult so make sure to STUDY. My best advice is dont take if you are taking other hard classes with it.
Very sweet professor but lectures are way too long. Tests are based on fill in study guides that she provides, however it is a lot of information. Not many homework assignments so grade is dependent on tests, quizzes and labs. One minute per question on tests even though it takes about a minute to read and understand the question!
I had a terrible experience taking her class online. Exams are taken with little time to answer each question. I never had a worse experience to be honest. Too bad she is the only one that teaches the course.
Without a doubt there is a lot to learn for this class, but this professor did not help in any way. Her lectures weren't useful and she basically just read off slides. Read the book, it is way more helpful than lectures. Tests are very hard, study, don't wait on it. If you are at a low grade mid-semester, the chances of you bringing up are very low
By far the worst Professor I've had at Pierce. This was my first college Bio class and she truly made me (and every other student) hate Biology. For exams, you basically have 1 minute per question and cannot go back and forth between the questions. Very difficult class and a truly unpleasant experience. Pierce needs a new Bio 6 Professor for sure!!
If you actually care about your mental health and GPA this class is not for you. Dr. Beavers is an absolutely horrible professor, this is probably the hardest class I've ever taken. Everyone was failing all the exams, several people ended up dropping. Pierce should be ashamed to have such an insufferable woman as the ONLY Bio 6 professor available
She doesn't make it easy but she lays it all out. Pay attention to the figures in the text. Answer all study guides. Go to OH. If you can do well, you'll feel good knowing you've learned a lot and gained study skills for the future. End of semester, she's the most understanding prof. Entertaining lectures. Fair. Listens to students. Offers EC.
Her class expectations are VERY clear, her lectures are really helpful. If you do your hw, watch the lectures, finish the assigned work, the exams aren't difficult. If you're winging the exams, it's going to long shot getting a passing grade. You are going to either do really well or really poorly depending on how much work you put in.
I was dreading taking her class because of the reviews, but it wasn't that bad. As long as you study her lecture notes you are fine. Her exams for the most part are from her lectures, some things are from the book. She curves all exams as well as the final. Her lectures are kind of boring but her class is passable as long as you study and work hard
I enjoyed her class. There is a lot of studying required to pass, but I found the book to be super helpful. She gives a lot of extra credit and all the resources you need to do well, you just need to put in a lot of work outside of class to understand the material fully (and I mean a lot). She has a lot of office hours which I found helpful as well
She is so passionate about everything she teaches and is more than happy to elaborate on anything that is unclear or confusing. It does require a lot of time outside of class. She is more than willing to work with you on anything that you are struggling with in class and is approachable and available during her office hours.
If you are interested in watching prerecorded lectures that are about twice as long as they need to be and enjoy completing numerous "busy-work" assignments, all with no clear guidance, then Jaime Beavers might be a good fit you. On a positive note, though, if you make it to the end, she will find a way to curve your final grade up to a C from a D.
She's really nice and will happily re-go over material and is passionate about bio. Exams are long but she does sometimes have curves, & you can have a notecard for exams. Lab practicals are difficult, so you really must study. Bio is difficult & complex, you need to put in time and there's lots of memorizing. Offers bit of EC throughout semester
the grades are all quizzes, tests, and labs. There is nothing that can help your grade because the labs are worth little. She only teaches through slides and expects you to read the book everyday. She's proud of the fact that people drop her class/fail frequently.
This was definitely the hardest class I've taken but if you study hard you will do well. She's extremely passionate about the subject and tries her best to make lectures fun but info is extremely fast so easy to get lost. MUST read chapters from textbook before exams and dive deep into those to do well. Has a lot of office hours, I loved the class.
She doesn't post slides, nor does she let you take pictures. The lecture notes don't have any diagrams and she reads off the slides. You are basically required to read the textbook because the professor doesn't help you digest the information. The class felt like a 5 week course in a normal semester. She is very stingy about random rules.
bio 006 was great but its for sure a class you need to study for! she's accessible outside of class and passionate about the subject. if someone gave her a bad review it was because they did not put in the effort as biology is tough as it is. youre allowed a flashcard on the exams and she offers extra credit throughout the semester.
this class is very hard and you need to put in lots of work and study time to get a good grade. she is very test heavy - labs and other worksheets are only worth a couple of points. you get a flashcard on the lecture tests and lab practicals are very hard. she is an okay teacher but very hard class
This is the hardest class I have ever taken BUT most people who take this class are planning on attending medical school so it prepares you for that. Professor Beavers is really kind. YOU MUST STUDY if you want to pass. This is not the type of course where you study the night before and get a B. Prof. is easily accessible and open to questions.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. 2 lecture exams and 2 lab practicals, 5 biotech quizzes and the final. Nothing is cumulative in this class. Professor understands that the end of semester gets chaotic so she's really lenient then with less assignments. It's A LOT OF CONTENT. Be prepared
Its good to learn about the things that will be on the MCAT, but not so great when you're being tested on those same subjects, and to the finest details, in the short timeframe between each test. Don't UNDERESTIMATE. Final is the hardest of all. 6/41 got an A. Funny. If a 2-year Bio, & not genius, DON'T TAKE. Will forget most learned within a month
I would suggest Professor Beavers to anyone who is confident in their own abilities. Lectures were helpful but were as boring as any college lecture. Be ready to spend some time learning on your own. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable during lab, and equally accommodating to personal circumstances.
Professor Beavers is a caring professor, but she also doesn't hold your hand throughout the semester. She expects you to commit just as much as the other class. Highly recommend reading textbook for studies and buy the atlas for lab practicals. Take her class if you're ready to commit or have time management very well.
seems nice at first but she's truly evil
Genuinely speaking she cares about the class, she is just to odd and passive aggressive its weird for a teacher. She needs to retire as she is no fit to teach in this day and age.
I had her for biology 003 in the spring 2017. She's very happy and detailed for the Biology information.
Take somebody else if you can. She's nice (?) and loves her job, but her mandatory lectures are so disorganized and boring that it made me despise topics i wanted to learn. She makes things more confusing than they need to be. I end up just reading the textbook during her lectures since listening to her is a waste of time.
She is a kind, supportive professor. Cares about student success. Lectures are engaging, labs intense but effective & exams are challenging. She provides strong support thru study guides and clear organization. Her passion for genetics shows, she handles sensitive topics with empathy, & uses funny anecdotes to make concepts memorable.
