Dr. Jensen is a phenomenal teacher. She really cares about her students and gives many opportunities to improve grades. She is overly willing to help anyone with questions. This class made me love biology and want to continue studying it. The tests are challenging, but fair. Quizzes and homework were easy.
She is a really nice and fun professor. We can see that she is pretty confident in what she is teaching. She gives lots of extra credit and she is always willing to help the students. The exams were not that hard, but required lots of study. Attending class is very important because pretty much everything she explains goes on the exam.
Dr. Jensen is a great teacher! Her in-class activities are great for learning the material. However, they sometimes span several days and if you miss a day you're left wondering what the heck you're doing. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Tests are challenging but don't kill your grade due to curving. Hilarious too! :)
Dr. Jensen is not a good teacher. A nice person, but doesn't know how to teach what she knows on a Biology 100 level. Quizzes and tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard and don't accurately assess what you've learned. If you really love and understand biology prior to taking this class, take it from her. Otherwise, take it from somebody else. Seriously.
I love Dr. Jensen. She's funny, entertaining, and engaging, and every class is different. She teaches you in lots of different ways, from the whiteboard to hands-on activities. She's honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had, and if you've never like biology before, you will after you take her class.
She is a wonderful person and almost every class is interesting. BUT SHE IS CRAZY WHEN IT COMES TO TESTS! They are so hard. I knew all the material, do all the quizzes (and do well), do all her homeworks, always go to class etc. and always did terrible on tests. They don't reflect what you've learned at all.
Going to the TA review sessions was much more helpful than going to class. The grade scale adjusted periodically throughout the semester. The in-class activities were usually a waste of time.
Dr. Jensen is a lively, perky teacher, but her classes were not productive. The TA review sessions were much more helpful to understanding the material than the in-class activities. Most of the in-class activities were a waste of time ant took too long. Dr. Jensen adjusted the grade scale a few times during the semester, which was helpful.
She is really nice, and the ta's are pretty awesome. Her tests are horrible. They are long, and not a good assessment of learning. With the curve the grading is pretty lenient, the rest of the class is just okay. Oh, class activities are a waste. Take from someone else if you can.
she is a very nice teacher and very funny. if i could choose a different teacher though, i definitely would. that tests are so incredibly hard and her teaching method doesnt prepare you for them at all. thank goodness for the patient TA's, curved tests and extra credit oppotunites
Dr. J is amazing!!! So far My best prof yet. Class was fun and engaging, she gives plenty of opportunity for credit. The tests assessed working knowledge of the material, soo I guess if you don't know how to think that you might feel the tests are hard. Overall best class yet. Defiantly would recommend.
Prof and TA's both very helpful. Lots of opportunities to get points. She's kind of hard to follow sometimes but the TA's do review sessions weekly and before exams that really help. She's very interesting most of the time, and I'm not a science person. Tests are pure torture but she curves them. I got a B.
I loved her style of teaching. Lots of class activities and demonstrations but they a little much at times. The weekly TA reviews were what helped me most in the class. The tests are extremely hard, but they are all curved. I definitely recommend her more than any other professor.
I took her class at CGCC before she taught at BYU and she was probably my favorite teacher. She knows her stuff and the people that didn't like her were usually the lazy ones who didn't use the study guides before the tests.
The averages for her Bio 100 classes were consistently in the 60's. She is unclear and does not teach well. She is very intelligent however. If you are taking her at a higher level, she might not be terrible. If Bio is not your thing, take from someone else.
she's very fun and personable. she gives a lot of fun but unnecessary little kid activities. the level she teaches at is not consistent with the level she tests at. you need the TA reviews or you're going to bomb the tests.
Dr. J is really interesting and really smart. I got confused with certain subjects but I think it had less to do with her teaching ability as with my personal difficulty with the subject. The tests are really hard but she grades them on a curve. Not an easy class, but made me more interested in biology.
She is nice, but makes you feel like you are 3 years old. Class is really basic, and the tests are really complex. Most of the time the story problems are so complicated, even if you understand the concepts, you don't understand what is being asked. The TA's were rude, and I passed them from my knowledge from 9th grade bio, and AP chem.
She is extremely nice as a professor, however, her tests do not test what she actually teaches in class... Very difficult. If you want to learn how to more of a critical thinker than about biology. take her.
Class is very hands on - she hardly ever lectures. Biology became more interesting. Tests are ridiculously hard. They require you to apply the principles you've learned to much harder story problems. Luckily they have a huge curve. She also offers lots of E.C. If you work really hard, visit the TAs, and do E.C. you can get an A
I absolutely adore Professor Jensen. The class has a great atmosphere! The tests are really tedious, but they always have a big curve. Go to the TA reviews! They are super helpful. The quizzes are kind of a bummer. All in all though if you just pay attention in class, you can get an A and she makes it easy to pay attention. Take this class.
Dr. J is a great teacher! The class is difficult on account of the tests, which are very long. Also, the quizzes are tough. There is always a large curve on the tests though and there are extra credit opportunities. Go to the TA lab and their reviews to do well.
Dr. J is a very nice person with a lot of wonderful enthusiasme! however, I fell that rather than teaching an entry level Bio class to students...she teaches an extensive and in debth course to already licensed Biologists. Her tests are CRAZY difficult and do not reflect what is learned in class. Very unnessisarily difficult course.
Dr. J was a super nice teacher, although she did say that the class we had taken were more of her Guinna pigs which is why she gave us so many extra credit opportunities. Her tests, quizzes and assignments were rather hard but not impossible if you went to every class and asked questions. Her final was much harder than I thought it would be.
Her Tests are hard, with averages around 80, but she curves to the highest score. I was worried about taking Bio in college after 4 years away from it, but she made it fun and interesting. If she taught more classes I would DEFINITELY take them from her. If you pay attention in class you don't need the textbook at all.
Dr. Jensen manages to keep the class entertained, but the tests are pretty difficult. There are opportunities for extra credit and the tests are curved, but I'm sure that there are easier Bio 100 classes offered.
I am A Student recieve 4.0's and took this class and got a B- by far the hardest class I have taken at BYU (I am in the Accounting Jr. Core, that should show you the level of classes I am taking). It is difficult to konw what she is going to test you on, and she assigns way too much for a GE class. Find another professor when it comes to BIO 100.
If you pay attention you don't need to use your textbook at all. I have barely opened it. The tests are kind of hard, mostly because they are all 100 questions each (usually about 2.5 hours) and they're for the most part application (kinda), not only memorization. There is probably on average 1-1.5 hw assignments a week, but most are really easy.
She is fantastic. I hated bio before, but for the first time it made sense and I felt like I was learning it. You have to study for the tests, but she gives you a bank of questions. There are some homework assignments, but not too hard. And quizzes a couple times a week. Pretty basic, but she's an awesome professor. I strongly recommend her class!!
In a 400's class, I suppose Dr. Jensen could be considered a very adept teacher. However, for a generals Biology class, she is the worst possible teacher. Her lectures (when given) consist of normal biology concepts, but her tests do not match anything she teaches in class. She makes the course unnecessarily hard, and difficult to succeed in.
For a GE level class this is a little ridiculous. The tests are super hard and most of the stuff she doesn't even cover or explain well enough. If you are a biology major sure it will be a challenge but if you are simply taking it to fulfill GE credits then look elsewhere.
Dr.J is a great person, super nice! However, this class reeked for a GE. It's almost impossible to get a good grade. In class we learned nothing and the tests are killer unless your a biology person.
Most clases are "group activities" that are confusing and don't teach you anything. Nothing of what is discussed in class is on the test. The tests are extremely long and don't test your knowledge of biology. All HW is busywork and your grade is dependent on how much of the Extra Credit you do. Don't take this class if you want a decent grade
She does not know how to write a test. They take forever and they're too hard. Every five minutes in lecture she staps and says, "talk to your neighbor about it," and (suprise!) neither you nor your neighbor know a thing because she hasn't taught it yet. Disorganized class too.
Dr. Jensen is very nice and has some very good and creative ways to help you learn difficult concepts, but she covers way more material than necessary and you HAVE to go to a TA to filter out what's actually important. She's kind of confusing sometimes and it seems like she speeds through difficult concepts, but works on simple ones forever.
I really like Dr. Jensen as a teacher and I wasn't bored in her lectures, but I didn't really like the course that much. The tests were way hard and most people I talked to in my class felt the same way. Her teaching style didn't really prepare me for the test. Bio100 was very hard from her. If you're a bio person, take it. If not, don't take it.
This class helped me to understand Biology through interactive lessons, non "busy work" assignments, and helpful feedback from the TAs.
Dr. Jensen is a very nice person and sometimes her lectures were interesting, but what you learn in class does not translate to the test at all. She expects you to know WAY more than what is covered in class, but reading the textbook/course materials is also useless and has nothing to do with the test questions.
DO NOT EVER take from this professor. She teaches/lectures you as if back in junior high (yes, colored chalk included) but the tests are on material you are expected to teach yourself. She gives you "exam banks" but its purposeless as she (and the TAs) can "neither confirm nor deny" that your answer is correct. TAs less than helpful.
I thought this class would be easy, but boy was I wrong! Her tests are unnecessarily difficult. I got to see the final for another teacher of BIO 100. It was literally half as long and much less in depth than Dr. Jensen's final. The class isn't bad, but the tests aren't worth the trouble. Paid $110 for an online textbook, used it ONCE, can't be sold
I don't know why Prof. Jensen has such a low rating. She made concepts clear by using activities. Tests were curved. The majority of your grade comes from homework and quizzes. There was a quiz almost every day, but they are only 4 questions long and super easy. Exam bank for tests, test ?'s come almost verbatim from the bank. Loved this class!
The tests were incredibly hard and in depth, while the material covered in class and on the homework was very easy and surface-level. TAs did not help much. Not a class for the biology-challenged.
I would recommend not taking Bio 100 from Dr. J. She is a cool person but her class was miserable. Class was fun but not helpful. Anything i learned was from the TA's. If you can take Bio 100 from a different teacher.
I'm not interested in Biology at all, and this class didn't do much to change that. Dr. Jensen has well intentions and is extremely nice, and there are plenty of TAs to help, but I just didn't understand it. Study hard on the exam banks and for the final. She curves everything though (thank goodness).
Dr. Jensen is really cool. I found her class to be very engaging. She is a teacher who cares, and she experiments to find the best learning methods for students. It is a tad challenging, but I found the whole class very rewarding. If you take good notes, study hard, and seek help when you need it, you'll be a-ok.
very experience oriented. Concepts that I never got in high school were made very clear in this class.
She really cares for her students and is very helpful outside of class. Assignment and quizzes aren't to bad. Her tests are hard though. Very tricky questions but her study guides help a ton. One of my only fun classes, and I hate Biology, but she made it interesting and fun.
Dr. Jensen is fantastic! This class is so easy. It reminds me of elementary school, when teachers made learning exciting. The class itself is simple, and she even lets you take a mini-exam every Monday instead of a huge midterm at the end of each unit. She offers so much extra credit! You'd have to try to not get a good grade in there.
I really enjoy Biology. However, the class was taught at 8th grade level, & the tests did not reflect the style that the class was taught in. The tests were significantly harder. Furthermore, she "tried" to fix this multiple times, but did not take any of the student advice seriously. So far, this has been my worst class experience at BYU.
The first couple of classes make you think "Wow, she's awesome!" You learn some new stuff and she is funny. I went to take her test, sat down looked at it and simply thought, "Oh, she gave me the wrong test, she wouldn't give this to a 100's level class." OMG! Her tests are so freaking hard! Go in feeling like a boss, leave like you just got beat.
Tons of simple assignments that are easy As (which is nice). She gives SO MANY extra credit opportunities. She is a very nice lady and she has fabulously luscious hair. If you go talk to her, she is really interested in helping her students get what they want out of life. Plus, she makes a point to learn every students name, which is refreshing!
Dr. Jensen is obviously smart, but she taught on a low level and tested on a high one. It was a bit difficult to prepare for tests, but the TA's were helpful. The only thing that was really unbearable was her emphasis on pedagogy. I zoned out most class periods that she talked about it. Work hard and you'll be fine. The textbook was unnecessary.
Dr. Jensen is a great professor and really knows her stuff. Class was always interesting to attend and the assignments were really helpful as opposed to just busy work. I really feel like I learned a lot. Tests are tough, but you're allowed to use your notes for everything except the final, and she curves everything. Don't get the book!!
Dr. Jensen cares VERY deeply about her students. So much that she invited her students to have dinner at her house, how awesome is that? If you actively participate in class and do the homework, you'll do well. Just make sure to stay on top of the homework.
Tests were the hardest I have ever taken at BYU. Incredible. Granted, Biology doesn't interest me much, but her tests had nothing to do with her lectures. Lectures were taught as if we were 8th graders, which was fun but not helpful for tests at all. I went to the TAs every chance I got and never got higher than a B on an exam, usually a D.
Tests are very difficult. I felt what we did in class did not prepare me for the type of exams she gave.
I absolutely loved Dr. J. She is really passionate about her class, and about biology--which is refreshing. Her tests are so ridiculously hard. The homeworklectures do not prepare you for them at all. It bothered me that I had other friends taking bio 100 and it was a cake walk, when I was REALLY struggling to get a get an A.
I'm surprised at all of the negative reviews Dr. Jensen has! The homework contains all the content, which you have to have down before you come to class. The assignments are very consistent, never take more than an hour. There are online open-note tests every 2-2.5 weeks. She's fun and very kind in class and explains things clearly. Great course!
Funny lady. We had tests and assignments due before every class. if you want to pass the class you will need to go, but no book is required so that was a plus. Her tests are pretty hard, you have to work to get a good grade, she is awesome and is always willing to help. lots of group work but not to bad. Assignments and test take less then an hour
she is totally awesome!! definitely take bio 130 or bio 100 from her. the class is enjoyable and she makes it fun to learn!!
Dr. J is absolutely AMAZING!!! There is a short HW assignment and short quiz every night, but it takes between 20-45 minutes to do. Quizzes can be taken open notes, as many times as you would like. Tests are all open notes, the class lectures are super fun and she teaches VERY well. She really cares about you as a person, and wants you to succeed
Super easy A. There is a reading assignment after each class and there are quizzes but you can take them as many times as you want so there is no excuse not to get 100% on each daily quiz. She has Apply Assessments every couple weeks that you can only take once and have to finish in an hour but they are open book. Loved this class!
The tests were so different from what we learned in class, it might as well have been a different language. She assumed we knew a lot without going over it and moved on to the next topic before anyone understood the last. I think Dr. J is awesome as a person but her teaching techniques could use major improvements.
Dr. J is a good lady and she's not even hard to get along with. The problem is that we learn one thing in class and then the tests are a 90 degree turn and completely different. Also, the final is only 35 questions and it's 200 points. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Notice that some reviews are about bio100 & others are for bio130. Major difference. I took 130. So hard. Unless u have a knack for science or already know a lot, this class will kick your trash. She assumes everyone is a natural. It's as if a piano teacher shows you where middle C is & then on a test expects you to be able to play Clair de Lune.
She has super interesting lectures, but she does not use a textbook (each reading is online, with questions imbedded in the text), which means you come to class sort of expected to have already grasped everything. But if you get stuck in the middle of the homework, there's no help to understand it before class. Very nice, just confusing class.
Extra credit saved me. The only way you can possibly get an A in this class is to go to a ton of extra credit. The tests are extremely difficult and the rate at which the material is taught is unhelpful. We focused for 2 weeks on the scientific method and then crammed a ton of complicate processes and reactions into 2 class days.
This class was really hard for me. It was a flipped classroom, so you did the readings and tried to figure stuff out on your own first, then talk about it in class the next day, which was really hard for me. Tests didn't seem to cover what was talked about in class. Even if you bomb the tests, just do the assignments and e.c. you'll be okay.
Tests are curved but very hard. Most the material that is covered in class isn't that useful for the assessments. Most learning comes from the online assignments. She is nice though.
Professor Jensen is the best Biology teacher. She explains the subject well and the class is interactive. She gives plenty of opportunities for Extra Credit and she is a great teacher. Make sure you prepare well for the Final because it's pretty difficult, but the rest of the class is great. I would take another class from her.
Dr. Jensen is a very nice person. That being said, I found no other positive in this class. I found the lectures to be very unhelpful and the readings to be tedious. The flow of the class was confusing. The tests were hard and most of the extra credit only applied to students who did not work in the evenings and could attend events/lectures.
Okay. I got into this class expecting it to be super easy. It is, don't get me wrong but I have literally learned nothing. In class we learn a bunch of basic biology concepts and then you have to take apply assessments online which are impossible because you don't know enough information from class to complete them. I'd rather run then sit there.
I love Dr. Jensen! Had so much fun in her class and learned so much! Sometimes I was a little lost as to what she meant, but overall it was a great class. She's very helpful to students, and super enthusiastic about biology. I highly recommend taking a class from her!
Dr. Jensen isn't always the clearest when teaching, and expects her students to learn quickly, but who doesn't? She gives extra credit opportunities on quizzes and there is always homework. She is super sweet and genuine, though.
She teaches bio 100 in a super easy way. She does online homework in a very easy to understand and use way. Everything about her class was well done and easy to use. If there are any complaints it is that she doesn't have office hours herself, but she has buckets of TAs.
She was always very enthusiastic about Biology and gave real world examples. It was never very boring in class. Several times she brought in objects and simple experiments shes done at home. There is a homework assignment after every class though and it can sometimes be lengthy and annoying
I love Professor Jensen! She is a very funny, intelligent woman. Her lectures can be a bit confusing at times, but she reviews topics again in class if she felt it wasn't well covered before. Not much homework or reading. She lets you go over test and quiz scores for points back.
Dr. Jensen is so sweet and willing to answer questions. Lectures can be boring sometimes but lately they've been awesome. I especially love how she ties the gospel in with biology so much. Her tests can be hard but if you go in to your TA's office hours you'll get added points. Oh, and the textbook was pretty much useless.
I really enjoyed this class, even though it was a little harder for me. (I'm not a bio person) Dr. J was awesome and she taught with lectures, but everyday was more of a group activity followed by the lecture rather than just her droning on. I really enjoyed getting to do the group activities to help with learning though. Office hours are accesible
I'm not a science person at all and this class didn't really change my mind. Dr. J is a great person and very enthusiastic about biology, but most of the stuff on the homework isn't covered well in the lectures so you have to do a lot of work on your own. The homework is very long and pretty difficult. Make sure you pay attention and go to reviews.
Very enthusiastic about the topics. Learned some neat things about the way the body works. However, her teaching style was often too vague or lacking context in my opinion. I found that I was overly-dependent on the words the came out of her mouth, and even then I don't feel like I was always prepared for the quizzes. Wish we had a real good text.
This was a good GenEd class. She's really funny and interesting. She's definitely passionate about what she teaches. Not my favorite class because it was hard to know what would be expected of you. At times, it seemed like what we learned in class was not what we were tested on.
Concepts were simple, which made for a great genED class. There are attendance points randomly but it's basically free points to add to your grade! The only challenge were tests (online) but they are open note (aka open google). She did a lot to make sure everyone's final grades were good (my final score increased 15% and she'll round grades).
Attendance is random. All tests except final are 1 hour online open note. On final she gave partial credit for some ambiguous questions and "select all that apply" questions, so my grade on the final got a major boost. Mostly, she understands that many of us will never take bio again, so she doesn't take the class more seriously than is necessary.
Dr. Jensen is amazing! BEWARE, though, SHE WANTS YOU TO LEARN. She uses her knowledge of education to help you learn so make sure that you do what she instructs so that you can get a full measure of what she has to offer, it is amazing and it will all make sense in the end. Her tests are hard since she expects you to APPLY (NOT MEMORIZE) knowledge.
There is no textbook, and the professor suggests Google as the main source of obtaining knowledge. It is meant to be a hands on class, where you learn by doing, but at the end of the day she hasn't taught you anything. Lectures are pointless, the only reason for going is to click in for attendance which is 10% of the final grade.
Has three assignments due a week with online videos and quizzes. They can range from 30 minutes to complete to 2 hours depending on how well to grasp the material. I haven't had a direct response from the instructor on any of my questions but a TA promptly responded and provides the assistance needed. She wants to make sure you succeed.
Class is hands on, but she expects more knowledge than I have. I took the class as a GE and only passed because of google. The tests don't seem to come from the lectures at all but attendance is "mandatory". If you're good at bio, it shouldn't be too challenging but it was an unnecessarily hard class for me.
I took BIO 130 from Prof. Jensen. Because I'm an upperclassman, I didn't appreciate the high-school-esque posters we had to make, and I didn't feel like I learned anything that I didn't already know about. The class is easy, but the professor is just okay. Could've done without the lecture about evolution and the church.
listen up, I took AP biology and thought this class would be a breeze. ya, well it isn't. her test are below 20 questions so for some people she is setting you up for failure at the start. plus she trolls you on the test because she doesnt teach everything that is on the test and some questions are straight opposite from what we learned in class.
I hardly ever knew what was on the tests or it Friday quizzes. The tests are not over 20 questions, so one mistake will hurt. She told us not to opt out a one hundred dollar online book fee and we never use the book.
I am a very good student and went to talk with her several times to get help and she just told me to keep working hard. She expects you to be professional in just BIO 100. Her lectures were not explained well but her TA's saved me.
I thought I understood the lectures but quizzes & tests were different & difficult. You check in every class. Missing hurts your grade. The book is online but barely used & we still had to pay. Most of lecture is spent working on a packet in groups. TAs hold reviews but you have to take the time to go. Homework is due before every class. Good luck.
The homework was relevant to, but not always covered by, the lectures. I didn't use the book. There are quizzes every other week (Friday for my class) with a test open that Friday to Wednesday. The tests/quizzes would be terrible if not for TA weekly reviews. You can get a point back on every test or quiz if you attend TA quiz/test review sessions.
If you enjoy science and want to expand your mind, this is the class for you. If you dont have a growth mindset look elsewhere. Its challenging. Pay attention in class, use TAs (theyre super helpful), and do the homework. The tests are all applied knowledge, not a lot of memorization. Dr. Jensen clearly loves what she teaches and is nice.
Jamie spends most of the lecture time on trivial activities that don't add to learning. They have loose ties to the lesson & waste time. These concepts could be taught more effectively and efficiently with just lecturing. She is a very nice teacher, but not an effective teacher. She often leaves hard concepts for us to struggle with on the HW.
Professor Jensen was good at teaching the material for the class, however, the quizzes and tests were extremely difficult if you don't understand the concepts. Go to the TA reviews to make sure you know the information for the unit or you will do poorly on the tests. The daily homework helps with the tests but can take up to an hour to complete.
Pro. Jensen is a great lecturer. She's clear and the textbook is mostly for if you miss something during lecture. Her tests are very scenario heavy, asking students to apply what they've learned to foreign events, which can be a little challenging; however, she does cure tests and give five percentage points back for reviewing the test with a TA.
Worst class I've taken at BYU. Pro. Jensen expects way too much of students who dont necessarily have a lot of biology history and doesnt take the time to really help students. I had to get help from friends who are biology majors and sometimes they couldn't even help me. Would not recommend.
this class was ridiculous. shes way nice but lectures on stuff that is not even on the homework. homework is long & on stuff you didnt learn in lecture. class is super broad & youre expected to know too much for someone not studying bio. only plus is the class is curved so I still did well even though I had no clue what was going on. ROUGH quizzes.
Tests, homework, and lecture are barely related. Often there were questions on tests that she had spent less than one sentence on in lecture. Too broad for a 100 level class. I don't feel like I got very much out of this class besides the required credit. Nice teacher but not good.
Honestly if she just made a study guide for the quizzes/tests everyone would get an A. Her tests only have 15-17 questions but she instructs you to study 40-50 learning outcomes for each unit? And then only focuses on like 10 of them for the test. only did well if I went to a TA review in which what we needed to know for the test was covered.
I HATED THIS CLASS. Treats her classes as an experiment. Tests and quizzes all application based, extremely challenging, even by the TAs' standards (Usually only 17 questions) Doesn't teach much in class, expected to learn on your own. MUCH too challenging for a GE requirement. Tries to push her personal beliefs on you. DO NOT TAKE FROM JAMIE!!!!!!
This class taught me a lot about how a bad teacher can influence my opinion of a subject. She is very centered on her irrelevant tests which focus on intense and complex story problems. I put in 15 hours studying for each test and still managed to get an A-. I DO NOT feel this class reflects an understanding of the material. FIND ANOTHER TEACHER!
Dr. J is an engaging professor with interesting lectures and a desire for her students to do well. I often found that the lectures did not have to do with the test material. If you want to do well in the class, you will need to go to the multiple TA reviews held throughout the week. Tests are plentiful, short, and difficult.
If you're a good test-taker this class is a breeze. I hadn't touched biology since the 2009-2010 school year and spent maybe an hour per week on this class. She did award points for attendance through a phone app (or web client) that required access to your location, which bothered me.
Dr. Jensen treats her students as 2nd graders with menial in-class tasks that barely relate to biology, and is more like arts and crafts. There are tests and quizzes every week, that are impossible to pass unless you already know everything about Biology. Way too hard for a GE class.
Dr. Jensen is an interesting lecturer and knows her material well. She uses fun videos and draws out concepts that we need to know very clearly. She assigned posters, essays, labs, and homework packets, so there is a lot of work (but its not too hard). The tests are super hard, so you will have study a ton. If you do the minimum you will get a B.
Good professor but it helps a lot if you took AP bio or can keep up with fast pace learning. I didn't necessarily love her teaching style and labs seemed to be super simplified but long. TAs were very helpful. Although tests are hard and purely application, if you study a lot, you can get As, especially because you can get 5% back.
Dr. Jensen is an okay teacher, wouldn't want to take a regular class from her though. The online section is really easy and you don't have to go to class, yeet.
Wish I would have realized how ridiculous the course structure is before the add/drop deadline. Textbook isn't mandatory, but there is no content to the curriculum besides a few videos that last maybe 20 minutes. Most of the homework took me hours, and I had to search the web. They ask WAY TOO MUCH of 100 level class.
The class was very enjoyable but the tests were very hard, even with a lot of studying. However, Dr. Jensen gives many opportunities for extra credit
minimal effort will get you an A. No writing assignments. Short homework assignments after each class that can be taken repeatedly. No midterm. Post-test reviews for 5% back on tests and quizzes. I watched netflix for a majority of class time and got a B.
Dr. Jensen is fantastic! I would tell everyone that plans to take BIO100 to take it from her. Her lectures are interesting and although it is a tough class the tests are very clear if you know the material. I am not one that is generally very good with Bio but her class really changed my attitude. Very Interesting and Spiritually uplifting.
Professor Jensen is very passionate about Biology, and sometimes I learned cool things from lectures. However, she changes her teaching methods every semester as part of a study on teaching... we had quizzes and tests on completely different stuff, during the same units, and it was never clear what she wanted us to learn. Lots of guessing involved.
She is a wonderful teacher, but this course is near to impossible to pass with an A. I'm a 4.0 student and I'm in the middle of my college career, but some of the homework assignments that are distributed are time consuming and she provided no resources to actually find the answers. Tests have nothing to do with what you study, it's difficult.
DO NOT TAKE BIO 100 from her. I'm in her online section. She doesn't even lecture in the videos, and her colleague who does is boring and just reads definitions to you. Lots of material that isn't found in lecture is required of you to know in homework. 8 midterms plus the final. Busy work is abundant (discussion boards, anyone?). Stay away...
HW is designed to teach you, so it takes forever to do and sometimes has paragraphs written before question. Classes are all small group discussions. Doesn't lecture, you have a packet and do group work during class. Exams do not reflect HW or quizzes. Class doesn't reflect textbook. Must go to TA to prepare for exam. Takes attendance every day.
Instead of teaching, she does these weird examples that are supposed to make it "fun" but everyone just leaves feeling confused and like they wasted time pretending to be in 3rd grade again. 90% of the stuff I learned was from attending the TA weekly reviews.
I have actually really enjoyed this class. She provides interesting information in class, and you still learn. There is a lot of material that she needs to go through and sometimes she doesn't make it through everything you need for the test. She provides the homework, which is the other way that you learn in this class. The TA's are great help tho
I plead with you, do not take a class from her. Unless you already are well-versed in Biology, you will be lost the entire semester. It's like taking Mandarin Chinese, and she takes an atrocious approach of having you use google--yes GOOGLE--for most of your learning. You will regret it. DO NOT TAKE BIO FROM HER. You've been warned.
Please do not take BIO 100 from her. You are required to learn 90% of everything on your own and are never certain if you are finding the answers she is looking for. Tests literally are just googling for an hour. Learned absolutely nothing, and swore at Dr. Ogden's face everytime it came on the screen (oh yeah, she doesn't even lecture).
The class is pretty basic biology, hard to go wrong teaching it. Could be that I just know a good deal of basic biology already, but I really can't see anything that she's doing wrong.
This was seriously my favorite class. Dr. Jensen is so funny and sweet and her enthusiasm for biology is contagious. If you took AP Biology in high school, this should be a pretty easy course for you. She is happy to answer questions and she ties religion into her lectures. The textbook isn't used, but the Mastering Biology quizzes are very helpful
This class is really difficult. If you are naturally good at biology, then her BIO 100 class would be good for you. But if you have little to no background in BIO I wouldn't take her class. It is really hard. Her tests/quizzes are really difficult and require a lot of preparation.
Ok, so Dr. Jensen is the sweetest lady I have ever met, but her Bio100 class is easily the most difficult class I've taken at BYU. I expected difficulty, but this was ridiculous. Your homework is what is supposed to teach you, but it uses terms she never went over in class. Be prepared for the most difficult tests and quizzes you'll ever take.
Not a 100 level class. HW every single night that can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours
BE WARNED. The lessons RARELY have anything to do with what the homework is on and what you're tested on. I only passed because I had to Google literally everything and learn in on my own because the class offers you nothing. Homework is overly difficult, for only being a small part of your grade. Im literally a plant science major found this hard.
Professor Jensen's class was really hard. I don't think BIO 100 itself should be a super difficult class, but the way she teaches makes it really hard to understand the material. Most of the learning is done by reading the homework and google. She also gives a lot of new information on the test in order to do one problem, which makes it difficult
Dr. Jensen seems like a really nice person but I didn't take much at all from her lectures. Every day she uses examples and experiments to teach, which is fun, isn't useful on the homework or the tests. There were many times where I sat down to take a test and she hadn't even covered much of the material on it.
She is so awesome and passionate! I'll be the first to admit sometimes I didn't want to participate in class but she has spent years studying how are brains learn. So usually I just assumed she knew what she was talking about. The class isn't easy but if you put the time in, do the homework and see the TA's its totally doable, and entertaining!
This class is hard. But, also my favorite class I took this semester. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities and curves the final. Make sure to go to TA reviews and do test corrections. If you want a bio class that is more interesting than just memorizing terms, take Dr. J.
Just, very, very awful. Every moment I spent working on BIO 100 was pure mental agony. Too bad for a really cool subject, which should be interesting. She uses you as a test rat. The whole class is literally an experiment and you are a subject in research she is doing. If you're a sucker for pain, then this is great for you.
41 HW assignments, 41 quizzes, 8 exams + 1 terrible final. The high on the final was 87% and the average was 60%. For a Bio 100 class? Please. Take nutrition. She doesn't even teach in the videos. It's all UVU staff and they don't teach you what you need to know.
For a General class, it is harder than it should be. She is very passionate, so she teaches us a lot of information very fast. It is a lot to take in and the tests do not always make sense. Quiz and test for every unit and there are 5 units. You definitely need to go to the TA reviews and test corrections to understand what is going on.
This class was way too much stress for the grade. Her lectures are just everyone trying to figure what is going on and how to prepare for the tests. She's into developing new teaching methods and I got the impression that she cared more about her innovative teaching methods than our grades. If you don't love Bio, then don't take this as a GE.
I actually enjoyed this class for the most part because of how much I learned but I thought it was a little difficult for a general. During the first half of the semester the class was pretty easy but towards the end the tests got really hard. To get an A you really have to understand the concepts she teaches to apply your knowledge during the test
This was one of the hardest most stressful classes I've ever taken. Prof. Jensen is nice and chill but her teaching style is awful. It's all partner work and examples, no actual teaching. The only time I learned anything was in the TA reviews. I took more tests and quizzes in this class than I ever have in my life. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH HER.
7 words: This class made me change my major (from bio to comms) deuces
This teacher was awful. If you want someone who teaches their political opinion as gospel doctrine, has homework that has nothing to do with what was discussed in class, and basically makes you teach yourself biology, look no further. This is what you've been waiting for. If you're looking for anything other than that... don't take from her.
Dr. J is a friendly person but I didn't like her class at all. Little of what you learn in class applies to the homework (takes between 15 mins and 2 hrs per class and is what you're tested on). To do well in the class, going to TA reviews is a must (I learned more from the TAs than I learned from her). I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
I loved this class! So much fun and learned tons! She makes learning the material fun!
Textbook is optional, but I highly recommend it - it covers all the material not learned in class. Dr. Jensen doesnt lecture, so much as she facilitates learning - aka, discussions and activities with these sitting near you. Study the learning objectives! The extra credit for going to a post test review is great. A good class to take for Bio100.
I don't know why people thought this class was so hard. I learned a lot and it was fun! All we did in class were activities to help us learn the core subject matter. The textbook is optional, I never got it. The homework is graded, but it's more for learning purposes. You can turn it in as many times as you need for full credit.
She is very nice and tried to help the best way she could. However, in almost all her classes we had to get in groups to do work. You basically have to learn all by yourself. If you did not understand, you would have to meet her or her TA's outside of class. But I felt like going to class did not help me at all, even though it was required.
Dr Jensen has a specific teaching method that utilizes groups to learn. if your group doesn't care, you will suffer. she teaches you theory and apply that theory on her tests. she doesn't prepare you for tests, the TAs do. so learn from your TA. our class did so bad on a test she actually told us we were dumb. she's not that nice in class or office
Professor Jensen was really an inspirational teacher, but for me personally the tests were filled with a lot more than what was taught in class. Even though Jensen was really nice, and caring, I think she just expected us to already know a lot of stuff and included much more on tests than we were taught. I wouldn't recommend taking her class.
DO NOT TAKE BIO 100 WITH ANYBODY ELSE!!! I LOVED THIS CLASS! Yes, the tests were very difficult, &I did feel like we did not talk about some things. You do work for your grade. The class is heavy on group work with your neighbors, &you do have homework every night, but that is expected. BUT I loved learning from her and she made bio super fun!
Very funny. Disorganized. Fast paced. Homework assignments were based on using and applying principles. Have to use canvas which sucks. Count on the TAs !!
If you want to take a class where all of the learning comes from those around you, tests are comprised of ridiculous applications of minor concepts mentioned in class, and homework is leaps and bounds more difficult than the in-class lectures, then this class is perfect for you! Dont think Id ever recommend her class to anyone in the STEM world.
If you have a fear of talking to other people and socially interacting do NOT take this class. I learned nothing from the teacher and had an anxiety attack every class period because it was where you had to learn from another student. She grades on a curve though, so I guess its fine
The class was very group work-oriented, the lecture was useless. Dr. Jensen didn't really teach too much, most of the learning was done in the homework. The tests were way hard in comparison to the class. Don't take if you hate interacting, or hard homework. Homework and lectures weren't connected at all. The tests were based on the homework.
R u a professional biologist? no? you'll hate this. 1 time, I was sick&didn't go to 3 classes in a row, & I did the best on that unit's test&quiz(which are due on the same day and worth the same amount of credit). Her lectures are so scatterbrained&if you ask her to explain, you WILL end up more confused. If classes r full, wait till next semester.
I don't usually do these, but I just wanted to say that Professor Jensen probably won't help you much if you don't understand biology. The class is very difficult because the lectures don't match up with the homework. Teaching yourself is probably the best way to do well. She is a very nice lady, but her class was too hard for an intro course.
I know there are a lot of bad reviews on here but I think she does a really great job of explaining biology in a fun way to people who don't understand. There is homework after every class and that can take a little bit of time, but if you do the work it's totally fine. Honestly, this was a pretty easy A.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! I did not like her teaching style and can honestly say that i learned nothing. She doesn't explain things well and she uses the homework to try to teach you. Some of the homework is something that we never talked about in class and it makes no sense but then it shows up on the test. Terrible and confusing! DON'T TAKE IT!!!
This class made me hate biology. Very disorganized lecturing style and Professor Jensen didn't teach much. She relied too much on the homework to teach us throughout the course. The tests were ridiculously complex, hard, and not on the material we had been taught. Overall, I would not recommend.
The professor really didn't teach all that much during the semester. Instead she relied on the homework to do most of the teaching. She even called our class dumb for not being able to figure out the homework when she wouldn't explain how to do it. Also, the tests covers stuff on it that she doesn't even go over. Made me really hate biology.
Please listen to me I am trying to help you, protect yourself from this class like your life depends on it. Tests, quizzes, and homework were WACK. She relied on you to teach yourself everything. I had to rely on friends who had different professors for help with this class. Obscure hands-on activities didn't teach me anything. PLEASE STEER CLEAR!!
Nightly homework, I believe the lowest 5 got dropped. Each chapter had a test that wasn't weighted very heavy that had very low averages. This class sneaks up on you towards the end, had an A all semester until the HORRENDOUS final exam. Unless you NEED this class take a different one. Dr. Jensen is cool though, no hate just didn't like her class.
If I could give a 0, i would. Tests arent weighted heavily and are all online and open book, until the final which is weighted super heavily and closed book. Made some friends in that class and studied for hours but it didnt help. Didnt love biology before, definitely hate it now. If you could take another class, do that. Dont kill your GPA here
Professor Jensen gave interesting lectures because it was almost always a hands on activity. Tests were all just applying what we learned in class. After test reworks helped bump up test grades. You just had to come to class and participate and you would understand the material. It isn't a lot of work, its just a little bit between every class.
Dr. Jensen was a great professor, but I wasn't a fan of the way she ran the class. Tests are open note, but they are very difficult. There is no textbook for the class, so all of the information on tests has to come from your notes. She is very helpful in class and offers 5% back on tests if you go to test corrections.
This class was awful. I walked away every week feeling worse than when I came to class. The homework that she assigned to count as a lecture class did nothing to help people understand the content. I only made it through this class because I have taken BIO 130 before and had a great roommate who I was able to study with. Do not take this ever.
Dr Jensen is a phenomenal professor. Her teaching style really focuses on application of concepts. Difficult tests as its mostly application questions. She cares so much about her students and is so willing to work with you and help you out. Super down to earth and really a great person. The kind of professor that you think of more as a friend
Dr. Jensen put together a great online class. The videos and the homework help you prepare for tests so I recommend doing them because they are also heavily graded (but not very difficult). Overall I really enjoyed this class.
Dr. Jensen is arguably one of my favorite teachers at BYU. Her assignments are fairly easy, and you can do the homework assignments as many times as you want to get an 100. You get points back on quizzes and exams, and her tests are open book and open internet. She really teaches the concepts, instead of just shoving facts into your head. 10/10!!
Dr. Jensen was amazing! This class was difficult, but she helped to make sure people understood the complex ideas, especially with this being a foundational class for the rest of biology to come. There was a bit of work to do outside of class, but you could cement all that understanding in the lectures. Definitely would recommend.
Dr. Jensen is deeply passionate about teaching, and wants to help all her students succeed. The class is interestingly and excellently organized. It is all-inclusive, and you don't need the textbook. The most difficult thing about the class was navigating the canvas learning infrastructure.
Class structure took a few weeks to get used to, but assignments ended up being pretty easy. Tests are hard and fully application based, but all open note and you can review with a TA for 5% back. Dr J is really good at teaching controversial topics like climate change and evolution, and she cares about her students. Big testimony builder!
Rather than route memorization, she makes sure you understand every concept so well you can explain it to others. This is SUPER IMPORTANT for tests because you need to know your stuff. She helps you understand stuff I came to appreciate BIO a lot more because of her. Textbook? it is optional and never used it bc her online work covers everthing.
This was the worst professor I've ever taken. Half of the material on the tests were never covered in class, and the textbook was not helpful in that regard. Very tedious and undescriptive homework assignments and extremely hard tests led many students to fail the class. If there are any other professors available, take them instead.
I loved Dr. Jensen! She is seriously the best and such a great teacher and inspiration. She truly cares about her students and I always found her lectures interesting. In BIO130, your lab is only with your lab TA, so it helps to have a good relationship with them. With covid though, we had lots of online homework outside of class.
Super sweet and kind to all. LGBTQ+ friendly. There is a lot of work involved in the class, but I was always engaged and excited to learn!
She is very passionate about biology and wants all her students to succeed. But the amount of work required in this class is waaaay too much for someone who is taking a full schedule with other tough classes.
Every week is the same. You have two to three homework assignments that take forever to complete every two weeks; you have a test. The test wasn't too hard if you really study the homework. It was just a lot of busywork
I took the on demand online class, she explained things great. Diffidently combines religion and science really well. I felt like the lectures were worthwhile.
This class was basically mormon myth busting in biology. As long as you did the work it was an easy A. I had it almost entirely online too.
Professor Jensen is a great teacher! Lectures were interesting, and the homework wasn't too hard. There are several tests every couple of weeks, but they're generally short and multiple choice. I learned a lot and I'd definitely take it again!
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Jensen is organized and I had plenty of help understanding everything. She doesn't require a ton, she doesn't even make you memorize vocab. all you need to know are the concepts.
Doctor Jenson is the worst teacher I have ever learned under. She doesn't teach you anything in class and expects you to learn on your own. Encourages students to google homework answers. Especially rough in her numerous tests as she often tests on things you were supposed to "learn yourself" but didn't because she gave no indication you needed to.
Professor Jensen was really sweet. For a college course, this class was relatively easy. Help was always provided if needed and I loved professor Jensen's passion for the relationship between religion and science. You just need to show up and do the homework if you want to pass. She doesn't even require memorization, we used notes on everything.
I don't like to be dramatic, but Dr. Jensen changed my life and major. She taught this class in such an enthusiastic and informative way. I looked forward to lectures every day because I knew I would learn something fascinating. She also built my testimony by helping me reconcile evolution and religion and now I feel so comfortable with it!
Lectures are amazing and Jensen knows how to teach and respect so many people at once! One hw assignment a week from lab, but don't fall behind in reading. Super easy to reach and willing to work things out with students
If you are a traditional learner exiting high school, do not take this class. She provides no textbook, only certain "helpful readings" that do not explain things to the detail. Tests are hard, very application based learning. It is not simple repetition of definitions. If you are looking to get a GE out of the way, and don't like bio, do not take.
Loved this class. Dr. Jensen is awesome. TAs were super helpful. 5 exams, but they are online and open note. Final is in the testing center. Before each class period we have a homework assignment, but they're always doable. I was worried bout taking this class since science is not my strong suit, but I got an A without too much stress.
Jensen is honestly one of the most amazing professors I have ever had. I loved her class so much that I later became her TA. She teaches clearly and inspirationally and clearly shows her love for students. She wants you to succeed and gives you every opportunity to get good grades. She is especially good at reconciling evolution and religion.
I honestly would not recommend taking this class from Dr. Jensen. I met with lots of tutors and all had no clue what we were doing in this class. She is really nice and tries to engage with her students which is nice but the content that she teaches doesn't make a ton of sense and wasn't great.
Hardest and most confusing biology course I have ever done. I wish there was a textbook and not random readings and assignments.
Really nice teacher. Compared to other Bio100 teachers, Jensen assigns A LOT less homework, only takes about 25 minutes each day. The issue is, it means that you're not really prepared for the open note tests, which are really hard. Overall, her class was pretty confusing, but the grading system really favors students so your grade will be fine.
Super enthusiastic about the subject and writes great tests. But you will have to work for your grade.
Dr. Jensen is really nice, but girl doesn't know how to teach. On daily quizzes you can just get the answers aka copy and paste them because they are given in the next questions you read afterwards. So, you don't learn . The monthly exams are open book but she asks things that you never went over.
Dr. Jensen is the coolest person! I had a flipped class where I learned the material on canvas before class and learned further in class. Make friends in this class so you have partners when going through in class assignments. Make sure to ask questions and become familiar with the TAs. Go to TA reviews to get an added 5% on exams!
I really enjoyed this class because it was a different format from most of my generals. She didn't just lecture the whole time; we got to do activities. The tests were very application-based, and they weren't weighted very heavily. So if you do the homework and come to class, you'll be fine. The evolution unit was really cool and well explained.
Loved her class! I hate biology but she made it interesting and applicable to my life. I liked the way her class was formatted, it was really focused on helping us to learn and apply, rather than just memorizing things. Definitely find a good group to work with in class, study hard for the exams, and you'll have an easy A. Great professor!!!
Not sure why Dr. Jensen gets such a bad rap, because she is a FANTASTIC professor. She really knows how to teach complex material and convey it in a way that's easy to understand. She is also super bubbly, kind and caring towards her students. One of my most favorite professors
Dr Jensen is so great. She is always so full of energy and which helped me pay attention in class. Pay attention and note take in lectures and labs and you'll do pretty well. I didn't read a lot of the textbook but when I did it was helpful, j not 100% necessary if you understand the concepts. The tests are very comprehension and application based.
Very knowledgable about Biology and a fun personality. She knows youre not a biology major if youre in BIO 100. Didn't really like the flipped classroom, but she is super fair in her grading. She drops your lowest homework scores, quiz scores, and one unit exam (not the final), which was super nice. All test are open note. I didnt study for any.
I'm sure Dr. Jensen had good intentions for the BIO130 class I took from her, but it ended up being what I dreaded most every week. I felt like I learned next to nothing about biology- all she wanted to do was show off HER knowledge. The assignments felt like busy work 99% of the time, as did the labs. There was practically no structure or order.
Dr. Jensen was an amazing teacher! Her lectures are very clear and she has such a fun personality. The exams can be a bit challenging but there are lots of reviews before them so it's not too bad. We cover so many interesting topics in this class. And most importantly, this class strengthened my testimony of the Gospel and my faith in our Creator!
Dr. Jensen is a great professor! BIO 130 gets easier as you progress. Dr. Jensen is aware of this and makes the first test worth a lot less which is super nice (I got a C- on the first test and still got an A in the class). A lot of your grade comes from the labs too. Make sure to study hard for the tests, do well on the labs, and you'll do great!
Dr. Jensen is an amazing teacher. She knows how to lecture in an engaging way that breaks down difficult subjects. Far and away the most I have learned from a bio class. If you take it beware that the last test and final have a huge impact on your grade so do well on those, and use the TAs because they are awesome. Overall not too hard if you study
Her class was a bit all over the place, and the constant homework was a bit much, but she really and truly gives you everything you need to succeed on her tests. open note, test hints, gives points back post test. She's hilarious, has so much passion for her work and honestly made me love a class I should have hated. GO TO TA REVIEWS
Save yourself $70, don't buy the textbook: I never used it. Lectures move quickly, but you can learn all the material there. Definitely go to TA reviews and work with them on difficult concepts! Also use 'Learning Outcomes' as notes since that's what she bases tests off of. Hard class because you will need to study, but it's manageable.
Don't take BIO 100 from her. I hated how there was no textbook and our homework assignments were random videos and readings. Lectures were hardly based on what we learned on the homework. Very test heavy as well, with 5 tests plus a midterm and a final, all in the Testing Center. She's a nice person, but not the best teacher.
She is a very caring teacher. She, however, did not prepare us for tests properly and it felt as if I was expected to learn things on my own. The homework that she gives us doesn't apply to the class lectures and also are not related to the many tests we have to take. If you take this class, prepare to be visiting the TAs a lot.
She's a nice person and she really knows her stuff. The material can be kind of hard, but all the exams are open note, and there's lots of extra credit. TAs are a life-saver if you're struggling. Don't be fooled by thinking this is an easy peasy GE, there's still a lot of hard things to learn, but it's managable. She's trying to make it fun.
Dr. Jensen is the best! Her lectures were super engaging and helpful, don't buy the textbook you don't need it! Study and do your assignments and an A is definitely manageable.
Very hard class but I'm just terrible at science. Jensen is a super awesome teacher though!!!!
Dr. Jensen was such a nice and fun professor. I really appreciated that she understood that we were not biology majors and explained things in a way that was easy to understand and didn't get too far into details. Sometimes we had fun little activities. Tests are pretty easy and she drops a lot of low grades on assignments.
Dr. Jensen is very passionate. I learned a lot from this class and was excited to attend. The downfall is that what is taught in class and what is on the homework are not like the test. She is all about application based things so it is a little tricky to know what to study. The TA's are extremely helpful.
Dr. Jensen is an amazing professor and definitely one of my favorites to learn from! I still think about things I learned from her BIO100 class almost daily. There are a lot of pretty difficult exams taken in the testing center, but if you go to the TA reviews and take notes you'll be fine! She also allows you to use your notes on exams.
Dr. Jensen is awesome. She's focused on teaching you how to learn and think. She's heavy on application of principle instead of memorizing information. I thought she was a fantastic teacher. She knows her stuff and is super happy to share what she knows. She wants you to succeed. I'd definitely take a class from her again.
I was impressed since her very first email. Dr. Jensen is incredible! She is so organized and her grading criteria is clear and fair. I loved how many opportunities there were to do well in the class and how well-designed her tests are. She is passionate about the subject of biology and teaches it well. She has cool mom energy.
I love Dr. Jensen! She makes class fun and really shows that she cares about us. She is very good at relating science to real life and also connecting to religion. However, the tests are SO HARD. They take a long time
Dr. Jensen is a wonderful professor! Her lectures are informative and fun, and her class is very organized. There are very few assignments, just a few smaller projects throughout the semester, and weekly lab assignments which you can complete during lab. She has guided lecture notes, and the tests are fair and representative of what she teaches.
She is very king and caring! Downfall to the class: what is taught in class and in the homework is extremely different from the material on the test. There are questions about different materials on the test that we were never taught about in class.
Everything I learned in this class was from a peer, or learning it on my own. The T.A. labs are a help as well, but they don't understand the material that she gives us either. She is so confusing. Tests are open everything but google, but the final is completely closed note, how is that supposed to prepare me for the final? Don't Recommend.
The structure of the class is a flipped classroom, which I don't think was the best approach to this class. Her lectures weren't very helpful because they seemed completely disconnected from the homework. I felt like the tests were extremely application based, and the material leading up to exams did not prepare students for the exams.
She uses a flipped schedule and claims that it is the best way of learning - but, consistently in the lectures, I would overhear that no one would know what is going on. I also felt like the tests were meant to trick us... but that's just me. She is super nice, but her structure of teaching is not helpful. Not my fav!
The classroom was a flipped classroom so it was hard to understand the concepts because they were taught by yourself. Each test was online + you could use notes. But the final was in the testing center. Didn't feel prepared for the final test. She is really nice but wouldn't take again
Mrs. Jensen is a really sweet person, but probably the worst professor I've had at BYU. Her lectures don't help at all, the class structure is horrible, and the tests are INSANELY hard. Take any other professor for this class, please. Oh btw, I had an A- in the class that went down to a B- because of the final.
Dr. Jenson is sweet but not a great teacher. She uses a reverse format: learn on your own before class with a brief review the next day (Take good notes). Tests and finals are open note but feel like they are meant to trick you. I failed most, despite feeling confident. I wouldn't personally recommend her, especially for freshman students.
I LOVED HER! She is SO organized and passionate. If you have to take Biology, take it from her
Very nice professor but the lectures/pre-class assignments don't prepare you for the exams, extra studying is a MUST. My biggest gripe with the class is that your submitted answers for the exams are hidden, meaning you can't review them on your own or with a TA. Prevents you from learning from your mistakes. Very frustrating.
I did not like the reverse setup, you take canvas "quizzes" to learn the content which is then covered in class. I was not prepared at all for the final even though I thought I was. Took my grade from an a+ to a b+ (one percent away from an a :( ) Dr Jensen is a great person however I did not feel like I learned anything.
She's a really nice person but a tough professor. The course goes really fast with little to no reviewing. If you miss a day of class it could very well set you behind. If you love science and you have a knack for it, she might be a good professor for you. Exams are super tough and questions are not worded like anything you answer in class.
Some sections do pre-class instead of homework, which was actually super cool. She understands that this is a general credit, and doesn't make you do much at all, really.
I loved Dr. Jensen! I thought I didn't like science but she made it so interesting and fun to learn. The only reason I didn't give her a 5 is because sometimes there was stuff on tests that we didn't cover or learn very well. But as long as you do the assignments, come to class, and take notes, it's not too hard to do well. TAs are also great.
Super kind but very unorganized. Tests had nothing to do with what we learn in class. If you want to pay to learn bio on your own, take this teacher.
Looked forward to lectures--dreaded the labs. I ended up finding a good lab group later on but man did they take a lot out of me--quizzes held at the beginning of every lab that you largely can't study for. Tests were hard. Attendance not mandatory but I never missed. TAs saved my life, I met with them once/often twice a week.
This was one of the worst classes I have taken at BYU. Dr. Jensen is very knowledgeable about Biology and made this GE course WAY harder than it needed to be. I am a straight A student and struggled so much I ended with a B. I went in weekly to the reviews, did all of the hw and nothing helped. DO NOT TAKE! The course gets harder as it progresses.
This teacher would have a much higher score if her BIO100 class wasn't mostly freshmen. As a Junior, I loved her passion, engaging lectures, and openness to feedback. Tests were tough but fair. Freshmen, brace yourselves, BYU is tough. Upperclassmen will find this class fun and manageable.
Dr. Jensen is knowledgeable, but the class is disorganized. Exams don't align with lectures - extra studying is a must. However, unstuckstudy AI was a helpful study tool alongside the lecture notes.
This supposed to be an easy class, but professor Jensen made it 100x harder than it needed to be. Quizzes were not entirely on her "learning outcomes," and the exams were so difficult. She even said she doesn't go along with the textbook we have for the class. She teaches and tests students on whatever she feels biology is all about. Avoid her!
She is not good. The is no structure to the course and it's impossible to prepare for exams. She "teaches" what she wants to but really, she just briefly mentions complex subjects without explaining them or helping her students understand the subject. Random questions appear on the exam that you've never heard of. Bad, take from different prof.
Dr. Jensen is very enthusiastic about what she teaches and I learned a lot from the class, but her tests are NOTHING like her learning outcomes or what she teaches in class. She teaches you at the most basic level and then tests you on higher-level applications that she has never had you think about.
I LOVED Professor Jensen's lectures and her. But this class was extremely hard for absolutely no reason. The TAs are great. The exam reviews were not helpful and were never before when the test opened. Questions on tests were so difficult. We did not practice the application she wanted on tests. If you are premed/dental, take cell 120 instead.
This class was hard for no reason at all. You're taught the basics and are supposed to understand everything else. If you have a bad lab TA, you're screwed. The tests are all pure application so you need to understand everything, but you're not taught everything in lecture or lab as there's a gap between lecture and lab, which makes it harder.
Go to office hours and it'll be way easier. Still challenging, just not impossible. She is a bit persnickety when it comes to grading, but it's usually because she wants a particular answer, and the TAs will tell you what that is. The lectures were engaging, but the labs will kick your butt - the homework attempt is due the next day.
UNIV 216 with Dr. Jensen was SO GOOD!! 100% recommend if you just need a biology GE credit!! The class is based on simple biology topics with a lds religious aspect based on the book, "Let's Talk About Science and Religion" and other various articles! We created a book the whole semester about what we learned. (Bonus: there are NO tests!)
Dr. Jensen is an engaging lecturer, and the class was very interesting! If you've taken AP biology this class will be manageable, but its pretty tough if you haven't. I was sorely dissappointed to find that a large portion of the final exam was material we had never addressed in class or lab. It dropped my grade froma solid A to an A-.
Unless you already know the class content beforehand you won't do well. She expects students to understand super complex content after hardly even touching on it or not mentioning it at all. Super exam heavy without clear guidance on how or what to study for the exams.
Maybe my favorite professor that I have had. She is very organized and if you do the HW and come to lecture you will be very prepared for her tests. She is SO engaging even though she teaches a huge group of students. I just wish that I could take more classes from her even though I am not studying biology.
I am not at all a science person, and this is one of my absolute favorite classes I have taken at BYU. She does what she can to help you succeed and knows most aren't science majors. Points for attending and extra credit for going to TA reviews. The final was tough, but that's the nature of the class. 100% recommend for your science general!
Dr. Jensen did an awesome job with the class and I really enjoyed it. Not going into med or science at all however, I was motivated in the class to do well. She did a lot of the class through canvas and allowed for credit to be given back from tests if you go into the lab for help. Shes pretty fair
Most of your grade comes from a book she has you make throughout the course. There was no rubric on any of the assignments, which made it hard to tell what level of depth was sufficient for assignments. The intro BIO-100 course heavily focused on religion in the context of biology. I wanted a biology course, but got a second religion class.
Dr. Jensen is a great teacher. Her lectures are super engaging and easy to understand. There's a lot of homework, but it's easy and helps you understand the material better. Her tests are all open-note. My only complaint is that her class was a little TOO easy, but I would definitely recommend.
Professor Jensen is an amazing teacher who really cares about helping her students learn and reconcile religion and science. Her lectures are engaging, and I loved that she took the time to answer every single question to the best of her ability. There is a lot of what feels like busy work, but the class overall was incredibly easy.
This class is harder than a normal BIO 100 should be, and that's what the TA said, not just me. This class has 5 midterms. The tests don't even cover anything you learn in class, which was the disappointing part. It was always full of things she mentioned ONCE. If you do not go to the after-class study reviews, you're cooked. You will not pass.
I would not recommend this class. I wanted to learn about Biology but she teaches about why science and god connects and which scriptures work with which science thingy. It's not biology. If you want to learn about Biology this is not the class for it. It's not too hard but do you want to pay for this though? Teacher is nice though.
There are 5 exams (not including the final), so it seems like you're back in the testing center every few weeks. Additionally, many of the exams end up using terminology that she knows, but we don't, so some of them can be somewhat hard to answer correctly because you don't understand the question being asked. Otherwise, it's a pretty easy class.
