jamie is actually a history professor in disguise! lots of facts to learn about canadian history rather than current politics but he's the cutest man and super intelligent.
This guy puts up so many notes to distract us from the fact that he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. He tells constant irrelevent stories, with useless facts, and jumps from subject to subject without the topics being the least bit related.
Well he doesn't really do much teaching, seeing as the first 2.5 hours are group presentations each week. When he does lecture, it's well put together, and I would probably have nice clear notes if he was testing us - but seeing as he's not, most of us just try to stay awake.
at first i thought he'd be a real bill gates type, but he had a surprising sense of humour
This guy is about as interesting as a twig!!!

Lawson was great. His thorough discussion of the topics covered leaves few questions to be asked. His unique sense of humour related to the topic will grow on you. His lectures were a pleasure to be in and the copious amounts of notes to be taken will assure your awakedness. Contemporary issues are covered in class as well.
Although his class lectures are boring as ever, he is a fair prof when it comes to grading. He is really passionate about the "history" aspect of the course, so make sure to pay attention to the nitty gritty to do well. Overall, recommended if you're interested, just don't expect to get an A in the course, as his tests are really tricky.
SO BORING. My god, staying awake in this mans classes was a challenge, and the discussion groups could not have been more lame. But if you're good at dates and history, take his classes. There are no surpirses on the exams, and it's an easy enough class. He's very open to discussing your mark and altering it if you have a decent argument as to why.
So dry, has a power point presentation he has been using for years and throws lots of information at you without teaching you what it means. Not an engaging or passionate teacher. Course focused heavily on the historical aspect and hardly dealt with actual Canadian politics. Very Disappointed.
His classes are really dry at times, but then again not everyone can make learning interesting. Lawson is a good teacher, not passionate really like matt james but he states the facts clearly as they are and is totally unbiased. The good thing about him is that he'll crack a joke once in a while that'll wake you up. Really a good guy.
Dr. Lawson spends a great deal of time on the history aspect of the Canadian Government and it can be quite dry at times, esp. with alot of overhead notes, but overall, it's an interesting course. (NOTE: Tutorial are pretty much a waste of time.. other than for attendance marks of course)
Very clear in his lectures and he provides you with a great set of notes. He really knows his stuff and brings in interesting guest lecturers. Extremely helpful in his office hours!
Taught very well and cracked some great nerd jokes but wasnt the quickest on getting marks back. Take his courses if you like history if you dont avoid him like the plague.
The guy can't "teach." He belongs in some sort of a polisci. lab somewhere writing papers and analyzing policies. He talks in a language that goes above the heads of most people in the room. It is really hard to stay alert and listen to him drone on, a very boring person, although easy to tell that he is very knowledgeable.
Ever seen Ferris Buehler's day off with Ben Stein as the instructor? Lawson sounds exactly like him. Great instructor, although the course title should be changed to Canadian History. Very detailed notes, helpful outside of class, and great professor in general. Buehler?.....Buehler?...... If you don't get it, watch the movie. ;)
I haven't finished the course yet, but I wish I could drop it. I haven't had anything back yet. And we are just getting to the midterm. He jumps around. I am unsure of what he is looking for. He is not very helpful with advise. Pretends he knows all history, but a hist major (myself) can correct him. But didn'y. Overall v. frustrated.
The most monotonous lecturer ever, speaks so slowly and with no emotion it is so painful to attend. Jumps back and forth through hundreds of years of history attempting to draw parallells which seem totally unneccesarry.Way too much history in a poli class as well, and no attention to contemporary issues
A big waste of time if you've already taken 101. The only difference between the classes is this prof is a creepy, monotonous robot who doesn't return papers.
Okay, yeah at first he is boring but if you really listen to what he's saying, you realize how sarcastic and funny he can actually be. Most of the class was asleep but I mostly enjoyed his lectures. but yeah, he speaks really...really..really..slowly..tests right from his notes.
Some people didn't like this class, but Dr. Lawson made Canadian politics and history as interesting as they get at first-year level. If you listen, you'll hear him made the most hilarious polisci-nerd jokes. Very clear and organized, and really an overall nice guy!
Jamie has a wealth of knowledge in Canadian Politics & I think he made it as interesting as a dry topic which covers both politics & history could possibly be. The course isn't to demanding consisting of 2 minor papers/mid-term/final/tutorials. I think Jamie can at times appear cocky which is a reflective of the kind of person I assume him to be.
His tutoring swift, his lectures sure to induce drowsiness in those not interested in Political Science; Lawson is everything one could ask for in a professor. He is somewhat of a stickler for grammar. Although, he is no Lynn Trusse. Understanding style, overall concepts, combined with some "nitty gritty" details, is his fortay.
"hold on to your flag and run daymn it its the only way to have independence from the u.s." <-- this amazing quote by dr. lawson explains exactly why you should not take this course with hero statements like this .. go burns go..

Enjoyed him as much as you can for a dry course.
I didnt think that political economy would be the most interesting course I ever took, however I did not think that it would be the WORST course I ever took. His lectures were totally unclear, his expectations were totally unclear, & he never released our presentation marks to us. I took him for Poli 102 and didnt mind him, after this class i do!
Turns really boring classes into bearable ones
This class is a history class, but there is just enough politics to make the fact I am doing 101 and 102 at the same time horrible - 102 is very, very boring, and quite the sleeper. Some of his material is okay, but it is slowly presented, and he puts a lot of emphasis on little details (mentioned once-Centaur. On midterm - Centaur.) Not good class
He annoys me, very approachable and more then willing to help, but he talks in roundabout circular ways that apparently are way over my head. asks what i feel are ambiguous questions. now i am pulling an allnighter doing all the readings, when we discussed almost none, egalitarian seminar classes do not work, to much discussion about nothing!
Nice guy who means well, but turned a potentially fascinating class into a waste of time. Could not make the course material interesting and dedicated at least half of the lectures to administrative discussions. Stay away from his Canadian Environmental Policy class.
As lecturer he'll crack nerdy poli sci jokes and interesting anecdotes, but he does have tendency to bore the class by going on and on about little things. There is a strong focus on history so be ready. My lab was enjoyable and the TA encouraged great discussion. As for marking, he IS fair and leaves many notes on your papers to explain your mark.
Not a bad prof, but tends to use language and give explanations that are way over people's heads. Kind of nerdy, but passionate about what he teaches. His PowerPoint's a real help for note taking. Midterm is harder than the final. I recommend you develop your own topic for the essay, his suggestions aren't very interesting.
If you happen to have Lawson only for a lecture hall style class, your missing out. Take his seminar, the class is dynamic, the paper writing process is comprehensive, and your grades, given you go to class, steadily go up. Plus, no final
Lawson is probably the nicest Prof in the university. Beautifully nerdy, extremely intelligent, and super kind. The course was really interesting, but it has a HUGE history aspect... brace yourself. It's pretty all over the place, but very worthwhile. Don't expect great organization, and READ!!! ALL the material!!! Otherwise you're hooped.
Dr. Lawson is extremely nice and helpful. He is clear and extremely knowledgeable. I have a writing problem, but he helped me to improve my writing. He is kind and his exams are challenging. Since He knows a lot, I highly recommend his classes. DR. LAWSON IS AWESOME
This class had dry subject matter to begin with, but you could tell Lawson was trying his best. Your textbook is your best friend in this course. If you're going to take an hour and a half lecture with him, have plenty of caffeine because he's very monotone. Fair marker. Rewards you for thinking outside the box.
Professor Lawson is a great prof. One of the best at UVic. Study his readings and you will ace his exams. Approachable, knowledgeble, and overall a very interesting lecturer. Fair marker if you do your work and read course material. Highly recommend taking a class with him!
Huge course load and tough class! The material was somewhat stale, but Dr. Lawson does his best to keep you entertained. He is extremely helpful outside of class and very understanding if you experience sickness/illness during the term. I highly recommend him! He is a likable guy that only wishes the best for his students! Do the readings weekly!
Do not take a class with Lawson. I have not received grades for 4 out of 6 assignments. My term paper was handed in over a month ago and it has not been marked. He doesn't show up for office hours, and takes days to reply to emails, even when urgent. Also, If you do not agree with Lawson's ideas and opinions you will struggle in this course.
Expect to wait a literal month to receive grades from assignments. Course Readings are rarely mentioned in lectures, although everything is fair game on the exam. It also takes him a while to get to the point in his lectures and a lot of time felt wasted in class.
It was awesome to take a class in which Lawson was able to come into his own, although Intro Marxism had to be something of a survey class in order to deal with a broad tradition. Lawson is a good prof, a fair marker and a really nice guy too. I would definitely recommend his class. Took CAN POLI ECON too expecting to be bored but really enjoyed it
lectures didn't relate to readings. very abstract concepts. weird analogies. very monotonous voice, awful powerpoints. marked excessively hard on a draft paper. means well, obviously intelligent, but should be researching only, NOT teaching
Excellent Prof, lectures were intresting and was very funny. Definitely knows his stuff! Would reccomend others to visit his office hours.
Jamie is a very intelligent professor with a great level of expertise in the course content. However, his lectures were very abstract and hard to understand the core topic at hand. Attend class as you're not only marked on it, but you'll miss a lot of supplementary topics not put on the slides. The final is broad, so it is good to know major themes
Jamie has grown on me. I took SJS and found him to be a bit confusing, but it was because he covered lots in a short period (team taught course). Poli 233 was great! He's super smart, and awesomely corky. Yes lectures are a bit confusing but you will realize how much you learned once you finish the class. Best to come into it with an open mind.
Jamie Lawson is one of the best prof at UVIC. I wish we could meet early in the second or third year of poli sci, but unfortunately this is my last term at uvic. Lawson covers a lot of history and cares very much about the details. After one or two assignments, you will realize how much you learnt from him. i wanna take grad courses with him
Jamie is definitely one of the better Poli Sci profs. He can be a bit confusing at times in lecture, but all the info he gives will make sense before the exam. As well, definitely a harder marker for writing assignments (mini essays; he gives three in this course), but he genuinely wants to see his students improve their writing skills.
One of the best professors I have ever had in the entire period of my academic education. He has passion and not only motivates students to learn, he also teaches them how to learn, and doing so in a manner that is meaningful, relevant, and memorable. Professor Lawson is a caring teacher and devotes time, often invisible, to every student.
He's one of the best profs in UVIC.
I did enjoy Dr. Lawson's classes and found him knowledgeable about the subject. Also quirky but in a good way I sense he really cares about the students. I didn't do too well on the midterm, but it wasn't heavily weighted so its ok (no final, no textbookl!).I feel like I came out of this class knowing A LOT more about environmental politics yay
Dr. Lawson is an amazing prof. Definitely one of the few profs out there who actually cares about his students, and it really shows. The class isn't a breeze by any means, however if you put in work there is no reason why you shouldn't end up with an B-A grade. If you don't like group work, this class is probably not for you.
After three years at UVic, he is the best professor I've had. The classes were great. He showed that he cared for the students. Went out of his way to help students who need it. Not the easiest marker and it does take a while to get them back but he gives very good notes when he returns them. I would recommend him to any student.
Dr. Lawson is a fantastic prof and criminally underrated on this website. He was the only prof in the Poli Sci department that made me fall in love with politics this year. His grading is tough but absolutely fair, and his comments provide you with exactly what you need to improve on the next assignment.
I was very interested in the subject matter before I began this course. I studied for extreamly long hours and was not rewarded for my diligence in the slightest. If you do not already understand this stuff exceptionally well (like the minutia of highly theoretical/philosophical language), this will be a GPA hit.
This class is a snooze-fest. Lawson is obviously a smart man, but a bad instructor. His lectures are disjointed, incoherent and rambley. Its ironic he lectures about 'good writing' and 'being concise' when you ask him a simple question and he rambles forever. Also bad at responding to emails. No study notes for the final for a difficult class.
Worst POLI class I've taken in 2 years. The content is boring. Lawson rambles, and rambles, and rambles. It's difficult to discern what is important/tested information. Fair grading on both of the written assignments. Don't take him if you can help it, he's obviously a smart man but not a good lecturer.
This is the best class I've ever taken, best prof too. I had never taken any Poli Sci courses before, and was in my second year, but I found the material super engaging and escaped with a 76. Highly recommend.
His lectures are monotone and extremely boring. He rambles on and on about things that do not even seem relevant to class material, and the power points are far from helpful. An RA marks the assignments (which took over a month), who marked quite harshly with little to no feedback. Very approachable and caring prof however.
He may ramble during lectures, however he is fair for marking and very approachable to speak with at any time. He is helpful and kind. Sometimes you may think "what the heck is going on in this class?" 2 months in, but somehow you seem to learn a lot. He is a good prof, yet I am sure he is not for everybody.
Although the topic could be considered quite dry, Dr. Lawson kept it interesting. He adds in humour to some of the topics which makes it engaging. He is a very approachable professor and gives really good feedback. I have enjoyed his class and he made Canadian Politics interesting.
Really nice guy, but to be honest one of the most boring lecturers I have ever had. And I don't say this lightly... it was borderline painful. Beside that however, the course was a good experience, just make sure to have some coffee.
His lectures are boring, but he is the nicest professor ever. I wish Id taken more classes with him. I highly recommend going to his office hours. If you didnt understand something something in class, hell explain it very well. I had trouble with a paper and he helped a lot. Have a question with your mark and hell talk to you about it.
Jamie is very caring and approachable, but I found his lectures extremely boring. The course material wasn't organized in chronological order; which made it hard to study for the final. SO many readings (boring), and assignments (two essays) were marked very severely. Seems like the expectation is that you have previously taken other poli courses.
Probably one of the most difficult graders I have had. But very fair. He would return your work and you would be given clear feedback. I think I was also the only one who laughed at his jokes. Needless to say, this prof is amazing, and I really enjoyed his classes. Tough grader, but made you better for it.
He takes way too long to grade papers and then continues to ramble in class about how he hasn't gone around to marking because he has to mark upper student's thesis'. The lectures are very boring and hard to listen to. Its a very discouraging class to take. His notes are very messy and the final exam is very hard to study for because of this.
This class made me want to change my major. This class was very unorganized and his lectures are rambling, confusing and boring. He goes off on topics and its very hard to tell what you will be tested on. He takes forever to hand things back and even promised hed post the review slides and failed to do so. I'm avoiding his classes in the future
Jamie Lawson works at snail speed. It takes him literal months to post marks, quizzes, and slides on coursespaces. His lectures are very boring and unorganized. He deliberately makes it unpassable if you don't perfusely take notes and do the readings. He also gives little to no guidance regarding the final exam, which makes it very hard to study.
He takes a ridiculously long time to get anything back to you. He tells us he will have something in by an estimated date and then push it back countless times. And instead of owning it, he just makes excuses. Not a total deal breaker but it is very frustrating.
Very tough marker but surprisingly kind face-to-face. Obviously he had a difficult term with absences, but I still second previous ratings that talk about him taking ages to return work and giving very little guidance for what to know for assignments/exams. His lecture style leaves a lot to be desired. Extremely hard to learn in this course, sadly
Nice guy, but doing the wrong job. If you do take a class with Lawson, take advantage of his office hours. He's very kind one on one, but he can. not. lecture. Really hard to know what his expectations are and the assignments are not well explained/thought out (too big for the word count, etc.). In third year, and that final was NOT introductory.
He seems to a great, really nice guy. However, he is not a good lecturer. The slides were very bare, the content was boring, and it was hard to be engaged. He was a little disorganized with some assignments. Be prepared to read the textbook. The final was 5 short answer questions and 3 essays which is a lot for an intro course.
Avoid. I ended up dropping his class and it was a waste of money on books. His TAs were the worst. The readings were the too much.
I can explain the reviews better for you guys. For 201 Lawson is hard because he makes sure you have a basic level of understanding going forward. But his upper levels are great. People don't want to have to work for marks but in poli sci you have to expect that if you don't show up and don't do the readings of course you will find it hard.
Yes, Lawson expects people to do the readings but if you go to lectures, do the readings and ask questions during office hours, if needed you'll be fine. This is the case with all classes. A lot of 2nd years found him hard, I suppose compared to college, but this is pretty standard for a major requirements thats teaches all government functions.
I have had Dr. Lawson 4 times between 200 and 300-level courses. He's caring, and gives a lot of great feedback following papers and tests, yet it may take months to receive grades back, and he really expects more from students than what he gives through his lectures. Usually unorganized and behind in material...
Do not even consider taking his classes. Although he is a very knowledgeable professor in his field of study, he is a terrible lecturer and an extremely tough grader. The questions on exams and for papers make no sense and are extremely difficult. It was the worst class I have ever taken and he is one of the reasons I have decided to switch majors
The course structure made no sense because not everyone would do the same readings, so he would lecture without context on readings 3/4s of us hadn't done. Exams were based only off readings, lectures were irrelevant. The class was Canadian Environmental Policy and he spent a full lecture talking about the wool trade in feudal England. TERRIBLE.
I always learn a lot from his classes (I've taken 201, 366, 357, and 458 with him) and he definitely assigns the most interesting readings out of any other professors I've had at UVic. Be prepared to read A LOT, definitely don't expect an A+, but take his class if you actually want to learn something.
First and foremost this Prof is a good guy, but Im not evaluating him on his personality Im doing so because of his rough class. This class has me disgruntled with the complexity of the writing assignments-the topics are confusing and require a lot of clarification. Also, prepare for weekly grammar quizzes and constantly falling behind in schedul
It is hard to contain my effusive praise for Lawson. Phenomenal lecturer (if you're keen), excellent course material and readings, infinite bonus readings, and they possess a deep abyss of knowledge about the subject. What a shame I took this course at the end of my degree and not beginning. Exceptionally receptive. Best prof politics on campus. :)
This professor made me confused on why I even entered my major. He seems like a nice person but this class it close to impassable unless you read and annotate every reading and take extensive notes. The information is extremely confusing and out of order, while being thrown at you all at once. Do not take this class.
Good knowledgeable professor, very friendly. Takes a long time to return papers and tests. Despite this he is very friendly and you will learn a lot. Focus on readings (try to do at least one from every week) and go to class and you will be fine.
Dr Lawson is a kind and smart prof. However, it is near the end of the semester, and we have only got ONE grade back-our 1st paper, when our final exam is less than a week away. This is unacceptable, even when you are busy. It shouldn't take over a month to get a grade (for another paper) back. Other than this, he seems to care about his students.
Professor Lawson is a very nice man, however, he assigns a lot of readings and his lectures are not particularly interesting.
IMPOSSIBLE to take notes unless you're a stenographer as the slides are basically useless; he only gives verbal explanations of concepts and doesn't record lectures. Goes on meaningless tangents at least once per class. He gave ZERO information for midterm and final exam; he only briefly discussed the format. Very judgmental if you miss class.
High expectations of students while not holding himself to any standard. Poor time management, long-waiting time for grades, so it is impossible to incorporate feedback. Falls behind on lecture schedule, lectures are unclear. Students grouped an assigned different readings, so lectures often are hard to follow. Avoid if possible.
Jamie is well informed about the subjects he lectures on. However, the structure of this class is irritating. There is a quiz every week on the assigned readings. The quantity of readings is heavy compared to other classes at this level. Mid term and final are both hand written long answer/essay style. He often goes off on tangents and falls behind
a lot of readings and does not make a lot of sense when lecturing. not an easy to follow professor and very boring.
Professor Lawson is knowledgeable, but the class is challenging. Lots of weekly quizzes and heavy reading load. Attend class, do the readings, and use tools like Unstuck ai for study prep - it really helps. Overall, a tough but rewarding course.
He's the sweetest and most caring professor. Unfortunately he speaks in riddles. But I am very fond of him.
