very sweet; tough on essays, need to keep up on reading and attendance
Essays were ok. she has interesting lectures. nice lady.
class disscussions are fun, not that much work, but prompt for essays were crazy
essays r graded hard, ok lectures, helpful, must go to class
Fan-fuggin tastic
very good teacher, if you can write well you will get a good grade in the class
Not a very hard class. Only three essays but there were big projects. Final essay very boring and unneeded.
Great class. Have to think for yourself and keep up with the work.
actually helped me write better. b sure to go to conferences.
really sweet and sort of funny. u have to go to class. grades hard, but comments on first drafts very helpful!
i thought i'd hate this class but it was ok

Interested in you as a person. She did her best to help me out when I needed it.

shes a cool teacher and all. but her class is totally disorganized. we started writing a second paper before we even finished dealing with the first one, and it confuses the hell outta me. shes cool, but i dont know if her teaching is the best in RWS. and her tutor contradicts everything she says.
she is a sweet lady.. but she doesnt teach u that much.. her stuff is disorganized.. but overall she is one of the sweetest teachers ull meet
If this service would quit censoring our comments it'd be helpful - I'll try again - Madden is a disgrace as a teacher - totally unfit for the university environment - kindergarten is more her speed. If you do take her be prepared to deal with her hygiene issues.
she's a bit boring but she really helps u
She is very helpful, but disorganized as an instructor. 4 major essays that make up your grade, and a final in class essay that is overkill. Overall, it is very possible to pass but comes with a bit of effort.
she is the coolest teacher that I had, her class was pretty easy just listen and make sure that you do all the work an attend all your tutor meetings. She really doesnt care about the final it was only 5% of the grade, she is cool dont listen to the rest, they probubly didnt do their work:-)
She is really nice and will help you out if you ask her to
she is very helpful and nice. she is very understanding. going to class seems pointless since we don't really do anything but you have to go because it impacts your grade. all you do is work on your essays. she's a very nice and reasonably person. very helpful too if you ask questions.
Jamie was one of the sweetest teachers I've ever had. She really wants you to learn and she has great intentions. Very nice and the class was fairly easy. I got an A and I'm an okay writer. Take her, she's good.
Very nice and understanding teacher. I had a family issue right around finals and she let me turn my paper in way late with no penalty. She's always willing to help you out with your papers and she grades fairly. I would recommend taking her class.
OMG DO NOT TAKE HER WHATEVER YOU DO. She may be nice but at first but sometimes she'll just flip out for no aparent reason. I agree, it seems more appropriate for her to teach elementary school. Her prompts are really unclear and confusing. I did okay in her class but it was a drag.
Good teacher. Tried to get students to better their writing, but u know some didn't quite understnad that she was helping them. I liked her & thought she was a reasonable teacher. Just try & do your work! She is a very good writer, knows what to look for in papers & maybe this is why students feel she is hard. Not super easy to get A but possible.
unorganized, unclear, gender biased readings, but overall a nice lady, classes are very boring. do the essays (even if you dont get the full page length) i recommend taking philosophy 110 instead
very good teacher. i learned a bunch of basic things u should kno about writing essays fr her that i didn't learn and wish i did in HS (she should b a HS eng teacher) very helpful, just ask & she's willing to help any way she can. just make an effort to write ur essays & u should get at least a B. i SUCK @ writing (& i'm not kidding) & i got a B.
FULL ON PLAYER HATER!!! She is not very helpful and hates on people all the time. I would not recommend her to anyone
Great teacher with a lot to talk about - this class is a worthless class but if u go and u at least try to answer her questions its very easy
Those who complain about this lady were obviously on her bad side because Jamie is such a cool professor. She super easy with her grading, lets you turn in a paper late and really cares about her students. Her class isn't the funnest one to attend but its barable!
The class is not useless unless your f**king Ernest Hemingway or something. Pretty cool professor, and an easy grader. Not too hard to get an A if you put forth a little effort.
She's an alright teacher. Always has a lot to say and cares about her students. Her essays are hard and she's a hard grader. I wish I took this class with someone else.
Okay class! A bit boring for an 8am class, but highly doable. Professor is nice, just a lot of busy work toward the end of semester. She does not grade hard if you at least try. I would recommend her although I was bored to tears in her class.
Amazing professor! If you care about learning things which will actually help you when you get out into the real world- take this class! She is so passionate about the material and eager to help her students. Lover her!
Cool Professor, this class was a breeze. I enjoy writing, so that may have something to do with it. Overall, Madden is a great professor to take for this subject. A couple of in-class group assignments, one group presentation, and several individual assignments due for this course. Very easy course!!!
Ms. Madden is a great teacher. I personally hate english classes so I never put any real effort into the homework, starting and completing them before class started and I still pulled a B-. Ms. Madden is also extremely understanding with personal situation and will help when she can. And to top it off, she is passionate about what she teaches.
Boring class. Easy way to fill requirement.
Very helpful. Go to class and act like you care. Class was boring at times but if you take your work seriously and listen to her suggestions there is no reason not to get a good grade.
This teacher is so helpful. She will take the time to help you whenever poccible and is very encouraging to her class. I recommned her just because she is so helpful and very sympathetic to her students.
Professor Madden is an awesome instructor..Honestly I disliked almost everything about writing, but after taking her class my state of mind completely changed. Throughout the semester, your assigned 4 essays and one final. The essays she assigns are phenominal to write about. She really challenges you to think outside the box and come up with brill
Easy class and a nice teacher. Didn't learn anything though.
The class was super easy. It was mostly independent work, for the summer session, we made our personal time lines to turn in work. You work with a group one day to improve your pieces, and another day with her. Extremely helpful, no exams, just papers and small projects. I would definitely recommend this class with her.
She is a very nice teacher, she will definitely take the time to help you if you need it. Just make sure to show up to class and the meetings, and you will stay on her good side and the class will be very easy. Plus she lets you hand in late work.
She's extremely nice and pretty helpful. If you don't understand the four assigned papers throughout the semester, each paper you have a conference with her to see how to produce the best final draft possible. Pretty easy class, the essays were basically the only work. She cancels a full week of class for conferencing for each essay too.
Jaime was very helpful and made it very easy to get a good grade on all the essays. There is also a timed essay for the final but she tells you what it is about before so you can prepare for it. Take her if you can.
She's a great teacher. She's very helpful with improving your writing, and is pretty nice. She can be kind of condescending, however many professors can be that way. Make sure you read, because it's important. Go to the conferences!
Professor Madden has made me a better writer. Now I can literally write essays last minute and still get A's no problem. Don't believe the other reviews about her being easy. Her class requires you to put a lot of effort. When I had her I worked my tail off and barely managed to get an A-. Take her. Learning is better than getting an inflated grade
Take her, you will not regret it. You will learn a lot and the class is not hard!!
Took her class in Spring 2012 to satisfy WPA requirement. You meet about every 2 weeks, once day w/group to analyze&critique papers, and the other day with her where she asks everyone about their thoughts on each others papers. Material is not really difficult, but it does require your time; decent amount of assignments that get you thinking.
Class may be easy but you learn absolutely nothing. She does not teach, only hands out fliers with vague assignment instructions. She also sucks at posting grades...the semester has been over for two weeks and still grades haven't been posted! She is very lazy...
I liked Madden, she was very nice. Uses course reader with articles to write essays on. Hard to understand/confusing articles. She is very helpful and gives individual conferences for each paper and no classes during that week. Class was usually group/pair work about readings. No hmk, 3 essays, final was short essay open book. I recommend her 100%!
She's very quirky but sweet. I took it over summer & you meet with her once a week with your group to go over your assignment & everyone gives you feedback and you make revisions. Everything's pretty much credit/no credit. You choose the grade you want and do the extra work/revisions. Easy A
what did I learn? absolutely nothing. she hands out flyers and makes you get in groups to answer the assignment questions. you will need a course reader and attendance is mandatory. 1hr 30 min of pure boredom :(
Take her!! She's the best! She is absolutely helpful and makes sure you know what you're doing. Class is composed of 3 essays and 1 final essay. Best RWS prof at State!!
Madden is a great teacher. She's super helpful. Her class consists of 4 essays that are worth 80% of your grade. You work in groups every class which can be helpful with writing your paper and getting ideas. She has personal meetings with each student before each paper if you need help and she gives great feedback. There's also no textbook!
Madden is a great professor and I loved how she gave the most amazing feedback on my rough drafts. If you ask the right questions in class or during conferences she can help you write an A-worthy essay. She's really nice and lectures aren't too boring. If she taught RWS 200 I would take her again!
Summer session gave us 3 class days and a one-on-one session for 20 mins on the other day of the week. She goes over the rough draft during the 1-on-1 and tells you exactly what she expects to get an A. It's a lot of work. But if you incorporate as much of the lessons in class into your papers, you'll do well. Splits us up into groups by major.
Awesome professor. She helps you a lot with essays and genuinely cares about her students. For sure taking her for RWS 200.
Great class! She gives students the opportunity to come in during her office hours to review their essay and give them helpful feedback. We spend weeks preparing for an essay, which is beneficial when writing your papers. Overall, Jamie is a great professor and I recommend her for incoming freshmen taking RWS100. --4 papers, 1 final, NO book
I'm not a fan of writing, but Jamie made it enjoyable. The prompts can be really vague and it is hard to pinpoint what she wants, but office hours help a lot to clarify. She's really helpful during conferences - I felt much more prepared to write the paper after.
Professor Madden seems like a genuinely sweet lady however, she doesn't make any sense. Her prompts for her paper's are so broad and general that it's nearly impossible to know what exactly you're supposed to write about. She's a pretty tough grader too and will be sure to mark down on every single little grammar mistake. A LOT of reading
Professor Madden is quite a sweet lady, but she is super vague on her prompts. They're extremely long making it kind of overwhelming. Not to mention she's a liberal and femininist. This is not a bad thing, but some of her prompts tend to lean towards things I personally did not enjoy writing about. Would rather take AMIND or AFRAS.
I enjoyed Jamie's RWS 100 class so much that I decided to take her again for RWS 200. Jamie is such a high quality professor. Her essays are based on readings that are very thought provoking, making writing more interesting. Despite time consuming essays, this is a very valuable class along with the helpful feedback if you are willing to work hard.
Class was challenging, you need both the textbooks she requires to write all the papers and assignments. She really cares about her students, and her class is intellectually challenging.
Jaime is a super nice lady. She's the type to give her students that participate the best feedback, but either way she's super helpful and specific when giving advice on papers. Attendance is necessary for an A and also counts for participation points. 4 major essays each on average 5-7 pages. Interesting topics, workload isn't too bad either.
Jamie is overall a very sweet lady however I cannot help but despise her. She requires you to buy an extra $50 course reader and I am not aware of any other RWS 200 professors requiring the same thing. In retrospect, she is not terrible, however there are many professors that are much easier than she is. She grades hard and assigns a lot of work :(
This class greatly improved my writing and critical thinking skills. I was challenged to learn new perspectives and then form my own opinions. Professor Madden is a great teacher and is extremely helpful when it comes to papers.
Jamie is really nice and will help you with a lot of your papers and give you all of the ideas but wow is that class boring. Feels exactly like that high school class where everybody just does whatever they want. Only 4 papers a semester and shes so sweet but I dont think its worth the two times a week I had to sit there.
Madden was by far my favorite Professor my first semester at State! She really cares about her student's success and is great at giving feedback on your work. She schedules conferences after every essay which is extremely helpful. As long as you participate in class, actually show up and do the readings the class is very easy!
Jamie Madden has strict grading guidelines that are hard to meet at times. The prompts are not similar to most prompts you have probably dealt with in english courses. Overall, you will improve your writing abilities by the end of the class, but do not take this class for an easy A.
I liked Jamie, she was sweet in class, but her classes dragged on for too long and all the group discussions were a waste of time. I thought she graded the essays fair. I have a friend who is in RWS200 with a different professor who had to write about global warming the entire semester, but Jamie picks more interesting topics for her class.
I love Jaime!! The class kinda drags on for a while and the in-class discussion can be boring but as a teacher she's amazing. Really helpful, will help you will all of your papers just go to her office hours. The readings are also kinda boring but you use them for your papers and they are really helpful.
Jamie allowed me to challenge and improve my writing skills using fun topics. I appreciate her attention to detail and willingness to improve her students' writing. Class discussions are very boring, but they count for your grade so show up, go to office hours if you want, and follow her (very straightforward) rubrics and you'll do fine!
Gives great feedback. IF you go to office hours she will tell you what to write on your essay and pretty much give you an A when you turn in the essay. Do all extra credit and your good. Also she has to coolest outfits
Madden is always available to give feedback during class & office hours. If you go to class, she gives you everything you need to be able to successfully write the 3 major papers. Deadlines are spread out well & she gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Do extra cred from the beginning & go to class & office hours to get an A! Super sweet lady.
She was alright, really makes you participate and chose wisely with who you're sitting with because she makes groups
Take Professor Madden if you want to do well on the WPA!! I got a 10 because I saved all my notes from this class and now I don't have to take anymore writing courses. I thought her lectures were somewhat interesting but class consisted mostly of group work that helped us with our essays. Not an easy A but I'd take this class again
TAKE HER FOR RWS 200!! she is so awesome and really wants you to do well. our whole class was based off disney books instead of boring things and she tells you exactly how she wants the papers to be written. if you follow her rubrics exactly and get feedback in class you will get good grades. participate in class and get on her good side too
Jamie is an amazing professor. She is always able to give you positive feedback to help you improve your writing. She is easy to talk to and answers emails within minutes. Her fashion is always on point as well!
If you want a caring professor, Jamie is the right one for you. She's a little tough on the grading, but that depends on how much work you put in. Honestly, it was only hard because I took a special version from her and her essays where based on another class (HUM140). If the other teacher wasn't off topic, the essays would've been easier.
she is one the best teachers i have ever taken. she caring and tells you exactly how she wants the papers done. she goes above and beyond to help you with your paper. BUT you also need to make an effort for your grade. I love her class.
took the online version of this class- pretty good decision. there are discussion boards every week that you have to stay on top of- these are worth a lot of points in the end so be sure to do all of them completely. you have to submit a rough draft for each project and if you make all of her corrections its an easy A ( i never got a below a 96)
Jamie is a great professor. Took this course online. One lecture (15-30 min) each week explaining work-load. Discussion boards each week, don't miss these easy points. Mostly weekly homework. Always accessible through e-mail and you can tell she really cares. Easy A if you put in the work.
Prof. Madden's course is just all busy work. It's way too much work for what it has to be. Not hard. I feel that it didn't improve me as a writer at all. You have weekly discussion boards, where you have to comment on every single person's post in your group. All the feedback just becomes repetitive. At times, her feedback can be rude.
Look, Madden is a good teacher overall. I felt like some of the topics of her papers she assigned were unnecessarily hard compared to other teachers. Saying that though, she does make an effort to conference with every student for every single paper so you have a good idea of what she wants. It's still fairly hard though. Be prepared to work.
Her class was great. She made writing super easy and would always give great feedback on all your work. She is there to answer any question and one of the sweetest and most understanding professors that I ever had.
Professor Madden was amazing! I took the online 6-week summer course and she gave clear directions, was available to answer questions, was encouraging and I learned a lot. I would highly recommend taking her course. She is easy to communicate with and very understanding. She was active in the discussion boards.
You will be given tons of workload for the 6-week class. There are 10 discussion boards and 6 papers. The class is divided based on majors, and you pick the topic that will be stuck with you for the rest of class. It is not fair since some majors are difficult than others. If you want for an easy writing class, look somewhere else.
Madden is a really great and engaging professor. She cares about every student. Writing papers is done incrementally: Each week you will write only a section of the paper, not the entire thing. This is so much easier than traditional courses!
Madden means well but the way she organized this class was insufferable. Instead of writing paper one 8-10 p. in length we wrote chunks of it every week which was incredibly time consuming & unnecessary. Her comments were often not very helpful and she generally is a much harder grader on better writers which made no sense. Take another RWS section
Instead of assigning stuff on Monday and then giving you until Sunday to complete it as a regular teacher would, she would have you start off with a discussion board Sunday through Wednesday and then only give you from Thursday to Sunday to complete the actual assignments(sections of the essay you will be working on)only 4 days. It was ridiculous.
Basically expect your entire weekends to be focused on this course because she releases content on Thursday and its due on Monday. Its ridiculous that she expects us this from us. Her feedback is not any help. Its vague. I would email her my rough drafts with questions on my paper just to submit my final draft and receive a grade I didnt expect
Its been a year now, and I still think about how terrible this professor was in every possible aspect.
Overall, a nice professor, but workload for this class made it one of my most demanding courses I took this semester. She expects you to post in a DB on Sunday and then respond to everyone in your groups by Thursday ON TOP of doing heavily weighted assignments every week. Tough grader and never super clear with her evaluations tbh...
Jamie's class is a lot of busy work that doesn't really result in the student being a better writer by the end of the semester. I'm sure there are plenty other professors who can offer you much more and take up a lot less of your time with studying and homework. The topics would have been interesting if they were taught by someone else.
If you laugh at her dumb jokes, she'll like you. A bit of a strange demeanor but is a really nice person. Most of the class feels like a waste of time that doesn't really result in making you a better writer. That's about the worst thing that happen in an RWS class, taking up a lot of your time and not making your writing better. Take someone else.
Professor Madden is super caring; she responds to emails quickly and is very clear on what she wants in her prompts/grading criterias. Go to class because you get participation points for each day, and class usually revolves around analyzing material that you will use for your paper which I found to be super helpful.
Basically this is going to be the class you have to put the most amount of effort into this semester even though you will probably get very little out of it. A lot of busy work and small assignments. There are other professors that assign way less work and can help you improve your writing much more than this professor. I suggest taking those.
Madden really cares about her students and their work. She arranges mandatory 1:1 meetings for your benefit. She also accepts late work. I haven't met a professor in college who genuinely cares about her students!
Bad choice. Doesn't care at all .
Worst professor I've ever had. Content isn't hard, but attendance is mandatory & tortuous. Doesn't care about her students & her attitude is beyond rude. Don't bother emailing her bc her responses are always backhanded & mean. When the class is talking she hits everyone with the “I'll wait…” like we are in kindergarten. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN.
She's just one script after another. No original conversation from her.
Professor Madden is an amazing teacher. I truly enjoyed this class and it was one of my favorites that I have taken. I would 100% take this class again because it's amazing to have a professor who cares and wants to see her students do amazing. I wish I had more room in this text to express what a great experience I had in Professor Maddens class
Madden is a caring professor, but the class workload is intense. Assignments are split into weekly chunks, which is helpful but can still be overwhelming. Using Unstuck AI and staying on top of the work helped me manage the course.
Very rude, not too bright, and unresponsive to emails. At least respond to emails about important topics! She seemed more interested in her shoes than her students
She teaches "voice" yet has none of her own, Cold replies, or worse—just silence shown, Emails vanish into air, Urgent pleas met with vacant stare. Rude in tone, yet claims to care, Every word a lifeless square, A script, a mask, a hollow play— No real teaching, just delay. I got the impression she memorized AI replies and parroted them. Maddening!
In my class, Jamie suggested a disdain for AI. But, with how little she replied to basic emails, you'd think an AI would teach her class better than her :P
