She is very helpful in writing for essays. She does step by step prepartion for final essays. She seems hard, and she is, but you will do good as long as you do everything. Read your reading assignments b/c you have quizzes. So far I have an A! She'sgood
No Comments
Quizzes and class work easy, but does not grade papers fairly. Talks a lot about her liberal ideals.
Papers graded unfairly. Grades based more upon if she liked your ideas rather than if you follwed the assignment and wrote a good paper. Daily quizzes are easy. She is extremely repetative during class.
She has the most annoying voice ever. Is an unfair grader; she wants you to write exactly the way she would. I love english, but hate this class. Don't get this teacher unless you know how to write well and like to do a lot of work.
very unfair and hard. really annoying and very liberal. dont get her if you can help it.
She has a step by step process for everything. If you do it correctly then you will be fine, but just about everyone never gets it correct the first time!!! She is hard but not impossible.
Wow...she sucks. She is not just very unhelpful, but rather, extremely unhelpful.
I got an A in english comp 1, and i failed her class, she doesnt help you at all and she is really annoying. Very hard to approach and is extremely rude. A terrible teacher.
Good overall teacher!!
"good all around teacher" you're on crack she's aweful
Very precise way of doing things..if you do not follow exactly then you will make bad grades....will let you redo essay's but still will not let you make a whole lot better!!!! WOULD ADVISE NOT TO TAKE!!!!
annoying voice but very nice; good teacher; very organized
Annoying voice, very unhelpful after offering assistance, maybe if you are a bookworm like her take the class other wise it seems she is quite rude
very biased when it comes to grading the papers. expects too much from the 3 major papers. its pretty easy to get a C though if thats all you're looking for
I'don't see the problem people had with her. Really nice, though particular about how she likes things done, and the class is a breeze. She also picks good books to read compared to the others gb teachers. Feel free to take.
i had this class 2 years ago and she is still the worse teacher i have ever had.I repeatedly went to her office and she told me what was wrong with my papers until they were good.she said they were good. Then she gave me d's and f's on my papers.hmm...
She's a nice lady, I think. She has a very particular way of doing things that you must do. No room for creativity. She's not the easiest either. She required like 4 or 5 different drafts of each paper and she gives you quizzes on hw reading.
Yeah, not fond of Marchant. She thinks she is some kind of writing God. Things are her way or the highway. She's also ugly.
Good teacher. I had no problem, but then again, I follow directions. If you can do that, then you should have no problem.
She's a pretty good teacher, a little boring at times, but if you read the material and study the powerpoint slides you will make an A on midterm and final
horrible teacher, get out of her class.
I had no problem with her. I know my way around the library after taking her class. That has helped me a lot in other classes. If you just follow directions you will be fine. I liked her class. Take it.
gives clear directions and picks good books. uses class time very well, but seems like she knows what grade she has decided what grade to give you on your papers before she reads it

She had picked favorites in the class and she did not grade fair AT ALL ! NOT RECOMMENDED !!!!
absolute worst teacher i have ever had. She plays favorites, and if you're not one of them don't count on getting anything better than a "c" I hope she reads this too because she desrves to know just how bad she is.
I thought I had a hard teacher, but this one takes the cake. She is very particular, and although she only requires 3 papers, you have to change 30-50% of each one about 3 times! also random quizes on LOTS of reading-almost like she thinks this is the only class you're taking!
She is horrible...please if you are reading this DROP NOW! She has her favorites..I was not one..and if your not plan on getting a C!! HATE HER!!
she definitely had favorites...and she did think her class was the only one we took. she assigned outrageous amounts of work and the papers were crazy, everything had to be so perfect...unless you are good at being the teacher's pet, find a new teacher!
One of my favorite professors at AU so far! I don't know why her ratings are so low, b/c she made everything very clear and was always willing to help w/ promblems. If you follow her directions, you will get a good grade.
Dr. Marchant is very particular about the ways things are done. She is not impossible though, I got an A with limited effort. Just make sure and let her see the rough draft of your papers.
The literature was interesting, but her expectations were way to high when it comes to writing papers. You will have to be a VERY talented writer and VERY good at reading comprehension to get an A.
OK, she's very lenient on some due dates, very easy to work with, and actually cares if you make a good grade! She's overall very nice and makes the class pretty interesting. The quizzes are all plot and easy to pass if you read. Essays are easy too if you do what she asks for! Liked her!
Overall, Dr. Marchant was a good teacher. Reading the books is a must, but the books she assigned were interesting and easy to read. I would suggest to take her if you dont mind reading. She also helps out with the papers, she gives suggestions and will read your paper before you turn to help out.
Very good teacher. It is a must that you read or you will fail the quizzes. The reading assignments are very easy to read. Only thing is she is very particular about essays. If you don't remember but one thing from this rating remember to write about the theme of the novel not the plot.
Dr. Marchant was by far the best English teacher that I have had at Auburn. Of course there is a lot of reading but afterall it is a great books class. I highly recommend this teacher to everyone....
Avoid her. Very, Very Particular. If you go to her for help on papers, she will assist you, but then she will expect much more above anything she commented on. By paper number 3, that got REAL old. After going to her for help on EVERY paper, reading, and taking quizs, I still failed. Next semester, I made a B+ with another teacher.
Dr. Marchant is a tough teacher. She will help you if you have a problem. Be ready to read all of your assignments because the quizzes require it. If you read and take your papers to the English Center, you will be fine. I dislike English and I did fine.
Awful teacher, take your papers to her so she can tell you what is wrong with them and then when you get it how she wants it she will give you nothing over a C-. It does not matter how good or bad the paper is, if she doesn't like it, it is bad. I got a D- on a paper and took it to another teacher which said that he would have given it a B at worse.
She's a good teacher. she is picky but if you listen to what she tells you to do and follow the handouts, you can make a B. You have to be willing though, otherwise expect no more than C and if you don't try, well there's your D and F.
Dr. Marchant is quite particular but if you follow her guidlines, you will do fine. You DO have to read because she gives weekly quizzes. These are easy if you read, and they can help your grade a lot. She only assigned our class 2 major papers. Every two weeks, you have to submit a one page response on your readings. I made an A.
yea she is somewhat particular but she just expects you to listen to her, so go to class, do the reading and listen! not a bad teacher but others might be easier, you def. learn a lot and the books she chooses are not bad either...i am glad i had her and i got a B and i did all the papers the night before
all i have to say is if you are enrolled in her class, GET OUT ASAP! i have never had a worse teacher at auburn. she says one thing for you to do to improve a paper but when you do it she still fails you. i rewrote 2 of 3 papers and still got a d in the class. i went in to get help from her but it didnt do any good. get out if you still can!!!!!
Get a different teacher. Whether your paper is well written or not, it is all about if it pleases her or is her style. Last teacher told me he liked my written and she told me my writing was poor.
If you are a boy you will hate this class. All of the books are for females. she is very into romance feminist books. lots and lots of reading to do
Very Good
REALLY enjoyed her class! Yes there's a good bit of reading but come on let's face it, it's a Lit. class. There are reading quizzes almost once a week but if you do the readings you'll do fine. Overall a good teacher, I'd recommend her
Good teacher, class isn't hard as long as you go and do the reading. She is straight forward and tells you what you need to know to do well in her class.
Very good teacher. As long as you do the reading, do the responses, and participate in class, you will be fine. I would highly reccomend her.
I usually make B's and C's in English but I made the easiest A that I have in Dr. Marchant's class. Just participate in class discussion and you'll be fine! Peace
Not a bad class. Just do what you're supposed to do and you'll be fine. Reading isn't always the easiest, but that just comes with the class.
my only A for the semester, as long as you read, you'll do fine.
Papers were actually on fun topics. not bad at all
Dr. Marchant is amazing for comp 1. The class is not difficult, your grade depends on you doing your assignments and showing up to class. She gives bonus points for each class you attend so SHOW UP! I would definitely recommend her for comp 1 and for any english or world lit course.
Not really that hard of a teacher. She has pretty clear guidelines of what she wants in the essays. She even lets you revise your final drafts.
Very cool teacher. Go to class when you are working on your papers and get her to proofread your paper and you'll do fine.
Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Just read the books (which really aren't that bad). GO TO OFFICE HOURS during essay times. Midterm and Final have study guides. Not the easiest, but not the hardest either.
she was a VERY helpful teacher, if you come to her for help with your paper ahead of time u will have a good B or better on your papers
Dr. Marchant is extremely helpful if you attend her office hours. If you ask for help and come to class everyday you will definately make an A in her class.
Great teacher. Very helpful. Get her to edit your papers and you will get a good grade. Try and you will do well.
"A" English students, prepare to make a "B" or lower. Difficult to relate to. Liberal view point. High pitched voice. Thinks she's tough on plagiarism. Will talk about students when they are not present.
I have her for Comp II and she was very good. As long as you do what she tells you to do, you will make a good grade. Before papers are due, she has office hours to proofread your paper. Go to them and you will make a good grade because she will tell you what you need to work on with your paper. I look forward to taking her for World Lit I.

she is a very sweet professor and takes tiem to help you out if you ask for it. it was one of the most enjoyable classes i had. i had her for comp 2 as well as long as you do the readings and ask her for help you will make an easy a in her class
Very easy teacher, assignments are not hard at all. There are only 4. You get to revise your papers if you get a B or below on one. I recommend taking her for Comp 1, that's what I had her for.
as long as you go to her office hours you will get an A. pretty easy class and VERY easy final. definitely take her class
I liked her, granted i never really went to her class. I havent got my grade yet but i doubt she will fail me for FA. Her essays are easy. I usually start them the day before. Revisions get u everywhere. I even got a flat 100. She's cool. just do ur stuff
this was overall a pretty easy class if u go to her review sessions then you will make either a A or B on the paper...the lectures can be a little boring, but overall you need to get her for Comp one if u can
Her class was very manageable. As long as your read the books and pay attention in class you will do great. There is at least one quiz a week but they are simple and you can accumulate lots of bonus points. I highly recommend her. Also, make sure you go to her office hours for help on papers.
She's a good teacher, but tough. If you're good at English she's great but if you want to slack off then don't take her. If you didn't have 3 pgs of your rough draft you got kicked out of class and your draft is lowered a grade. Topics were a bit confusing but going to her office hours were helpful though it did get old for doing it every paper.
Dr. Marchant is a Great Professor! She keeps it interesting and you increase your knowledge of different literature. She has you reading material that you would in No way have chosen, but in the end it is very interesting. I would Highly recommend her if you enjoy reading as much as I do. I Love her class and look forward to it!!!
this is BY FAR the worst professor i have ever had! i have never had a professor more condescending than her. supposedly my AP english classes taught me nothing. Until THIS class, i was a straight A english student, and I barely passed this class. It's not that it's a hard class, she is just impossible to please, and has unobtainable expectations.
I took Dr. Marchant for English Comp. 2 and it was way harder than I expected. For English Comp. 1 I made a 100 on every paper and then when I got to her class I only made one A the entire semester. If you make over 4 grammatical errors you get a B for grammar. If you take this class you must be ready to do 1000 revisions because she is very detai
It didnt let me finish my comment last time. SO. yeah..she's really tough but wants you to learn and is a good teacher. Take her if you want to improve
It's not that she's necessarily a bad teacher, but it has been extremely hard to please her. I've gotten mostly Cs on assignments. You read a lot of books and most are interesting, but a few are horribly boring. I wouldn't suggest you take her, though, unless you want to work really hard on the two papers, midterm, and final.
Horrible class. She's nice enough, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to please her. I've always had good grades in English classes except this one. She rips everything apart and if it's not EXACTLY what she want's she'll give you a bad grade. We read one interesting story this semester the others were a waste. I don't recommend her, but she's not the worst.
definitely really tough, but she wants you to do well. I definitely recommend going to talk to her for help on the papers or before exams, because she will tell you what to fix and what to expect! Attendance is mandatory and reading is crucial, so don't take her if you just want an easy A. I have to say she really helped my improve my writing.
SHE IS HORRIBLE!!!! Get out now very rude and not helpful at all. Her class is awful and so is she. Grades so unfairly she thinks everything has to be here way. Quizzes everyday. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER!!! She is the worst english teacher i have ever had!!!!!!!!
Reading is required every day and there are reading quizzes once or twice a week, but she drops the 2 lowest quiz grades. Participation is not mandatory. She gives the best essay grades on the creative options, so pick one of those. Overall, it's a fairly easy class as long as you do the reading every night. She is generally nice and helpful.
HORRIBLE! DONT TAKE HER! She doesn't know what she's looking for in papers. She is known to just slap a grade on your paper with no reasoning behind it. BAD BAD BAD
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is the worst professor I have ever had. I have never made below an A in any english class and she now has failed me without even reading two out of the four essays we write throughout the semester. She has unattainable standards and she is so unhelpful. DO NOT TAKE HER
She is a harsh grader on papers, and they increase in final percentage for your final grade. This can be scary as you go along, but do not fret because she is highly helpful in her office hours. She will tell you to your face if your paper sucks, and what you need to fix to make it a good paper.
Ok look she is not an EASY teacher but I wanted to do well. I went to class and I skimmed the reading. I turned in her papers due every two weeks and when she gave us an opportunity to go in and see her- I went. It was not a hard class. Just go the extra mile and you will do fine. PS always do the creative option for her essays she grades easier.
The quizzes are very hard if you do not read the chapters which she suggest. She follows her schedule exactly, which is nice. And if you do not go into see her while writing each paper it is hard to get an A or even a B.
If you are looking for a laid back literature class then this isn't the class for you. She gives you tons of reading to do every class and a quiz three times a week. Her quizzes are fairly easy if you read, but the reading material can be confusing at times. Make sure you go to her office hours to review your essay.
loved her. If you go to her office hours she will help you a lot. She is very specific with the essay assignment outlines.
I got a C on my 1st paper but she gives you a chance to raise the first 3 out of 4 papers up to 10 points so it got raised to a B. If you dont go to her for help, you will not get an a. I recommend going twice per paper. She likes the papers to be very straight forward. lets us out early a lot, but her corrections can be harsh.
I would never take her again. I couldn't stand the class. She is very hard to please. I went to her for help on papers and revised them and still had a tough time. Change teachers if you can.
Dr. Marchant is a great professor. Although she makes you work hard for your grade, you will end up thanking her in the end because you learn so much from her class. At first the readings were a little intimidating but once you get the hang of her grading system and expectations, it became easier. It's very helpful to meet with her before essays.
She is a pretty good teacher. She does have quizzes with each reading that you do. The quizzes are easy but all of the reading can be overwhelming. She can be a tough grader. I made a c on the first paper and a b on the second one. Her midterm and final are pretty easy. I would take her again.
Dr. Marchant is a tough grader. I always went to her office hours and used her critiques for my papers, and still didn't get good grades on them. It can be hard because each paper builds on each other, so it's important that you choose a good topic. The classes aren't too bad, the readings are short, but there are pop quizzes.
one of the best teacher i've ever had !
assigned reading every class day & quizzes often. There's a midterm paper & final paper--always go with the creative options! and go to office hours!!! you'll get a better grade. also midterm and final take a long time and take good notes on all the lectures on the readings to do well. One page essay due on a reading assignment once every 2 weeks
She is an unclear grader. It seems as if she just carelessly gives grades. Attendance is mandatory because of pop quizzes. There are reading responses due once every two weeks. My average grade for reading responses was a D and I turned every paper in on time and in an organized manner.
A lot of reading. Tests aren't hard as long as you take notes and pay attention in class. She's not really a tough grader as long as you follow her instructions.
Dr Marchant is a great professor. I took Comp 1030 with her and she was really helpful for me by go over my essay with me and tell me what I need to change before the hand in date. If you need help, she will be helpful. I am now taking her literature class too and I love it. And I am going to take Literature II with her again! She is a nice person!
Worst teacher I have had in my life. Avoid at all cost
Loved Mrs. Marchant. She is intimidating at first but ended up being my favorite teacher. She clearly loves what she does and she tries very hard to make it interesting. Tons of reading that is hard to keep up with. One quiz a week, one reading response every two weeks which she grades harshly. Easy grader if you follow instructions, and go see her
Mrs. Marchants grading is very subjective. You may only do one thing wrong in a paper or response and she would deduct over 10 points for a mistake. There are TONS OF READINGS. Every two weeks there is a RESPONSE due on what you read. Beware of POP QUIZZES. GET OUT OF THIS CLASS AND SAVE YOURSELF FROM HELL...
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. You're graded on the few assignments and even fewer papers turned in. You can go to conferences before you turn in a paper, which I did, she would tell me my papers were good, then give me back grades of C's and D's. If you make one tiny mistake she will deduct 10+pts for that one mistake. Grading is very subjective.
I love Dr. Marchant. Like other people have said, her grading is a bit harsh, but when you learn how she wants papers written, it's easy. Genuinely cares about what she teaches, and you'll learn way more from her than any other literature professor. Don't take her if you don't want to work a little bit harder than you have to in a lit class.
Jamie provided very good feedback. Grading was done promptly. Communication were excellent and grading standards were very clear.
Mrs. Marchant is by far one of my favorite teachers. She is an excellent instructor and a fair grader, but, most importantly, her class was extremely fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend this professor! I love her and her class! She cares about her students and insures that they receive quality education in a exceptional participation environment!
Dr. Marchant lays out exactly how she wants the essays to be done. She gives you plenty of chances to edit and revise your papers to get a better grade. As long as you pay attention and do what she ask for in the papers then you should be fine. She warns you about the in class quizzes which are not too difficult if you read the textbook.
Too much work need to do for essay. It's really hard to make an B or A for this class. She all ways give C- for a normal essay.
I am a senior and took her 2 years ago. I had to come back here to warn y'all not to take her. She is the absolute worst. She picks out a few girls that she likes but I think every guy in our class got C's. We wrote 20 papers in all, 4 of them being 8 pages at minimum. She is rude and takes a pointless subject and shoves it in your face. Run away.
Pop quizzes & twice monthly short papers.
I LOVED this class! Dr. Marchant is really sweet, & gives you the opportunity to revise your essays for extra credit! Participate in class to avoid awkward silences & ask questions! Didn't use the book except for the pop quizzes at the beginning of the semester so just make sure you actually read the assigned readings & go to her office hours!!
She is a very good teacher as long as you come to class and go to her office hours for revision. She's also very quirky and gives wonderful feedback when you ask questions. So ask questions.
If you're not an english major DO NOT take this professor. I literally went to class everyday, read that material, made 100s on all of the quizzes and still barley had a B. Her grading on midterms/essays/finals is ridiculous unless you are one of her favorites. Absolutely would not take again.
grades tough on homework reading responses. at least one quiz a week on a reading.
Dr. Marchant is an incredible human being. She cares so much about work and wants to help her students in anyway she can. That being said, to do well in her class, you have to show up and show that you are actually trying. She is a compassionate, quirky, and really inspirational individual. 10/10 would recommend.
If youre taking this class to get your core Literature credits, I advise against it. She isnt the type of teacher to let her class be less important than major specific classes. 1-3 hours of reading before every class and at least one quiz a week. Other grades are reading responses, two 4-6 page essays, a midterm, and a final. 0/10 recommend.
Loved this class. Dr. Marchant is super chill and gives only three papers. As long as you do well on the three papers and see her for office hours to get them edited by her you should be fine.
Dr. Marchant is a very straight forward professor. Her lectures can be pretty boring sometimes but other she has a very clear layout for her papers. Follow her directions very specifically (especially the percent of paper she wants quotes/analysis) and you should be fine. She is caring and lets you get points back!
Professor Marchant is a good choice for a freshman English class. With only a few papers, they are worth most of your grade. She holds office hours right before the papers are due, & she will read your entire essay & give feedback. Class can be kinda boring, but she does cancel a good amount. Overall if you put in the work, there's not much stress
Super kind lady that is very enthusiastic about the subject matter. Sometimes classes could be repetitive, but that was fine with me. Lots of reading with near daily reading quizzes, but they were REALLY easy if you read. She cancelled class often and unfortunately had to leave halfway through the semester due to personal matters. Would take again.
A word of warning, don't take this class if you aren't able to attend office hours. With the vague feedback on papers and responses coupled with boring assignments and extremely weighted assignments that have no clear criteria, and borderline racism in some commentary, its not worth it for a class that is an elective for most individuals.
One pop quiz a week, two large essays, one midterm, and one final. Going to class is essential since you do not want to miss her quizzes. Her lectures involve plenty of participation from the students, so if you want a more true lecture literature class I would find a different professor. Make use of her office hours for papers.
Dr. Marchant is good at discussing literary works, but for leniency, absolutely horrendous2 students in the class facing difficulties: 1 w/ a broken leg & the other w/ a hospitalized grandparent. Despite her own troubles, she wont budge and now they have to drop the class to avoid failing. Reconsider if you have anything secondary going on.
Dr. Marchant was so inconsiderate of everybody in the class. It was hard to have sympathy with her situation when she showed nothing in response to any of our lives. she was such a tough grader but provided no type of feedback or even criteria/rubric for any of the writing assignments. she also took forever to grade anything. do not recommend
She gave me a zero on both peer-review assignments. The first one was because she never sent me the essays to review until after the assignment was due. I had to email her like four different times about it and she refused to reply until like the sixth email. I can't say everything I wanna say because of word count but don't take her, she's awful.
She is honestly terrible. Gives no feedback and will just say something is wrong or bad with no other input. Also, do not use big words in your papers because she reads at a third-grade level and often spells things completely incorrect in her directions as well.
I personally really liked professor marchant. I enjoyed going to class and liked the books she chooses for us to read. The one frustrating thing about her class is the way she grades essays or writing assignments. You could turn in the same thing twice and she thinks it's great the first time but doesn't like it the next. Really fun professor tho.
Professor Marchant is a horrible teacher. I went from having an A in English 1 to a C in English 2. Her grading on essays are horrible and she gives no feedback on what to improve.
literally do not listen to any of the good reviews. she was horrible. run for the hills
absolutely horrible. can't understand her talking, class is a waste of time, and the way she grades things doesn't make sense. don't even think about taking her class.
Very strange teacher. The papers are graded very strictly and it is very hard to tell exactly what you did wrong. Improvement from paper to paper is very difficult. Highly recommend taking a different teacher. Classes are super boring and feel like they last for 3 hours.
I would take Professor Marchant for the way she structures class but not if you are looking for a professor with a great personality or character. There were 3 papers each one containing an exercise before. Marchant explains how to structure each essay and has individual conferences where she gave feedback on your essays which was super helpful.
I took Dr. Marchant for english 1 and 2 and she's great! Go to class bc she will explain exactly what she wants from you. there are 3 papers (4-6 p.) and an oral presentation. She gives great feedback and will tell you exactly what to do on your paper to get an A if you go to her individual conferences. I got an 100 on 2 papers.
Dr. Marchant is a good professor and gives good feedback on your papers. What she wants from you is always clear and she isn't a tough grader in my opinion. I actually did better in her class than I did in my high school English classes.
Pros:about Dr. Marchant, she is funny, she cares about her students, she has very clear criteria most of the time, she drops your lowest quiz grades. Cons:She is hard to reach outside of class (responds to emails sometimes) difficult to write for but the mini essays give you low risk opportunities to learn, hard grader Overall I enjoyed her class
expects a lot of reading and gives very specific quizzes about the details of reading homework. I would read closely and still make 60s on quizzes. nice lady, tries to be relatable during class. gives some extra credit. final can be hard if you don't read.
Professor Marchant has a specific style, but engaging with it pays off. The essays are graded strictly, but her feedback in office hours is super helpful. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the textbook.
She is a tough grader but gives multiple opportunities for feedback on your essay before the submission date. If you follow her feedback, you should get an A on all papers.
I caught Dr. Marchant just before retiring, so her class was really easy as she does not seem to particularly care anymore. She is a very nice woman, but she can be kind of hard to understand. Basically everyone who showed up made an A+. Unfortunately, you do have to do a ton of reading for this class as expected.
