She only refers people to the tutoring center and is unwilling to help you. She gives (unedited 30 min) YouTube lectures about how to do the homework, then the problems are entirely different than her examples. She refused to help and I struggled so bad bc her examples didnt match the material that I had to drop the class, even wanted new major.
Jamie is not respectful and thats the biggest problem. She expects students to respect her and then refuses to communicate anything. Does not respect students time. I didnt find the class too hard but Ive taken algebra before in this context. Lectures are boring, she refuses to help students who are struggling. If possible take a different prof
Professor Jamie does not know how to teach especially math 99 students. She shows no respect for students and is unwilling to help. Office hours are 15min time slots so if you need help forget it. All of her teaching content is taken from other professors and some quizzes have 20+ answers to choose from. Be smart and don't take any of her classes.
COVID-19 Class. Asynchronous, with YouTube video lectures. Jamie had a lot of office hours but they were only 15 minutes, not too helpful. I was often getting help in the tutoring center and from peers on homework. The material can be hard to understand sometimes. Exam questions can be worded oddly. She is very nice though and wants you to succeed.
Jamie's lecture videos for 156 were really thorough and helpful. She was also friendly, responded to all my emails the same day and was REALLY helpful in office hours. I don't know why people are saying she's inaccessible or doesn't care about students? Online classes mean you have to reach out for help, and she always helped. Tests were also fine.
this class was hard, but not because of jamie. she spent an extra half hour of her time in office hours with me every week to make sure i understood everything, and she's so nice and really wanted me to succeed. she explains well. the textbook was awesome and we had lecture videos made by the author. i honestly don't understand the bad reviews.
The way Jamie explains math makes it really make sense. I finally understand why some things in math are true that I always just took for granted. She's also great in office hours. There were only two tests and if you understood the homework they were easy. She's exactly what I want in an online prof. Lots of students cheated in the IG chat though.
I really liked her class. The workload wasn't bad, there was one long-ish homework but she told us about it the whole quarter. People asked her to cancel it but she said no, which I didn't like but I do think was totally fair. The schedule was weekly, consistent and predictable. She also graded really quickly and posted keys right away. She's nice!
I'm a first gen esl student and Jamie was really nice to me. Part of what makes math hard is not being able to communicate well enough in english but jamie Was very patient sweet and caring. she really listened to me and how I was thinking and could explain things to me how I can understand. She has many office hours and always allows retakes.
What I like about Jamie is she always answers questions really fast during the quiz if you send an email. She wants you to understand and succeed. I liked the youtubes by the textbook writer and the textbook was great. The videos had good examples. It was helpful that the hw and quizzes were at the same time each week. Also she allows retakes!!
I say participation matters because if you use office hours it helps a ton. But her lectures are super helpful and I only needed to ask questions a few times because she thinks of everything and addresses questions before you even need to ask. In office hours if you say you wanted to go over something, she already has it pulled up. Amazing prof.
I've had Jamie both in person and online. She is seriously the best math professor I have ever had. She wants you to learn a lot. She also has a lot of personality, but it doesn't come through as much online (not sure how she could show much personality in asynch without being unprofessional). Lecture vids were comprehensive, and tests weren't bad.
okay some of my classmates hated her for like no reason and I still don't understand whhy. but those were the ones always looking on IG chat for everything and seemed like they didn't try. I thought the hw and tests were reasonable and she even responds to emails right away if you're in the middle of a test. she has plenty of unused office hours.
Math099 is hard sometimes but way easy sometimes. It just depends where you are on each subject because it's a catch-up class. Office hours were immensely helpful and she gives everyone 15 minutes of one-on-one time (a lot imo) in office hours which none of my other profs did. You have to pass every quiz, but she explains why and allows retakes.
I thought this class was fair, good workload, fair tests, great explanations. Solutions are posted immediately. But being async I thought this class felt disconnected (she says so too). My roommate had her before for 112&114 in person and loves her. She's really young but uses her personality to her advantage and is a great teacher.
Jamie is legit so good at explaining everything. There was so much I didn't realize about math until we really unpacked it in this class. The textbook is the same way. Lecture vids were by the textbook author, which some students said wasn't enough but I think having her make videos too would be redundant. Plenty of office hours too, use them!
This class was so rewarding. We learned about math in terms of econ and learned how to pay off loans. I didn't expect this class to be so applicable but Jamie really made the examples relatable and interesting. I had a lot of questions over email and in office hours, and she was always patient and never made me feel dumb. She's really approachable.
The only work graded were quizzes and homework. You have to pass every quiz in order to pass class, and if you dont you fail the class. I reached out for help after I had failed a quiz, and was told to either withdraw or fail the class without attempting to help. This is the second time Ive taken her course and will never again.
Jamie is a good person, however she is not the best instructor for an asynchronous class setting. She does not grade a single exam instead she leaves it up to her TA. Unless you have a previous understanding of pre-calculus and dont mind teaching yourself new material then this may be the class for you. If not, I hope you have a high self esteem.
There is no final but weekly exams and a lot of homework. Jamie is probably a good professor in person but seemed very inexperienced to be teaching online. She is only available from 9-5 on weekdays so don't expect help outside of those hours. The exams reflect the work from the week before but are significantly more difficult that the homework.
Her lectures are amazing. The class was asynchronous so you have as much time as you need to take video notes. She knew when to make her own lectures and when to link another source. Wide range of office hours and she responded to emails quickly. Her expectations were very clear and the schedule was rigid and predictable. Tests were open all day.
There are weekly tests that are nothing like the lectures and homework. Her online lectures are very disorganized and all over the place. Examples do not prepare you for he HW or tests. The whole class tried emailing with complaints and she wouldn't acknowledge anyone. Find another professor if you care for your grade.
I had Jamie Fall Quarter 2020. Ppl always complained in class group chat which was annoying, but she's a cool professor. Straight forward and good personality. She does not accept late work which I don't like, but if you stay on top of everything then you're good. Ask help if needed and do the homework
Jamie is nice but she assigns SO MUCH homework. It opens up right after class and is due the next day before class, and doesn't give you the option to work ahead at all. This would probably be fine if she didn't assign so much, even on test days, so if you have a job at all good luck. Tests are do-able but 50 minutes was not enough time for them.
Math's not an easy subject for me and Jamie definitely didn't make it any easier. Her 80 mph speed lectures make it nearly impossible to understand any new material. Not to mention that there are extensive homework assignments every night that not even the tutors can help you out with. Her grading sucks and the overall class is just discouraging.
Jamie's class moved far too fast. Lectures never covered enough content for you to understand the excessive homework. 4 quizzes are worth 60% of your grade, while the final is 20%. Despite the sheer volume of content, Jamie never gives any study guides and does not always supply review material. Jamie's class is excessively difficult and unclear.
HW takes 1.5+ hours everyday. Tutors can't even solve some hw problems. Class pace is way too fast. New material the day before a test. Limited office hours. Each test covers 3 weeks of content at least. Timed 50 min. Very difficult test problems. NO late work no matter what the excuse. Get sick, no lenience on workload or due dates. Good lectures
Jamie is clearly very passionate about math, however, this class was honestly a nightmare. Homework questions were so much different than what we learned in lecture, homework is graded for accuracy, and overall this was just a very discouraging course. It didn't seem like anyone in the class had a grade over a C. Take 114 or 115 instead.
Everyday there is 30 questions of math due at 1pm. She never excepts any excuses fir anything. I am sure if you were in a coma she would still give you no credit for late work. The daily homework is graded very harshly, even if there is one error she will dock a whole point. This is the first time I had a professor that has no sense of empathy.
just drop her, not worth your time. Yeah her lectures are somewhat interesting but she doesn't seem to care about students. I reached out multiple times to her and she completely blew me off. She explains it one way and assumes everyone gets what she is saying without bothering to state it in a different way. Retook that class and got a 96%.
I would suggest NOT taking this professor. She speeds through lectures and it gets confusing. Her tests are really nothing like the homework. The final was super confusing. I failed almost every test this quarter. I will say she is accessible outside of class which is nice. If you can take it with someone else, do it.
I feel that I was able to learn, there was a LOT of homework but it was predicable when it would be assigned and due. She made it easy to ask her questions outside of class and she stuck to what syllabus told us to expect. Best advice I could give: go to the tutoring center when you're doing your homework. I think she expects us to ask for help.
Not good prof if you are not the best at math. Instead of answering a question, she will show you 30 ways of doing something, without elaborating on any. So you sort of know a ton of ways, but still don't UNDERSTAND one way to solve a problem. IS one of those super smart math teachers that doesn't know how to actually TEACH math
This class got rapidly more difficult as it went on and Jamie was pretty disorganized. Her lectures sometimes didn't make sense and we would have to ask for clarification a lot. If you are not mathematically inclined maybe look for someone better than her, but if you must take his class spend some extra time with the material.
Don't waste your time taking this class. She isn't accommodating for covid, doesn't answer questions and the tests don't match what we do in class and neither does homework. No quiz or test corrections and she had no review material prepared. One of the worst professors I have ever had.
I'm not sure if Math 114 is really hard in general or if Jamies class was harder but i put in over 4 hours a day trying to learn material and barely scraped by with a c-. I wasn't a fan of how test based this class was as tests are everything but 10 percent of our grade.
Jamie is one of the worst professors I've ever had. The material we went over in class hardly ever made sense, and tests were formatted with things that weren't even on the test. I spent 2-3 hours a day figuring out how to do the math outside of her class and studying things for the test that didn't end up being on the test. Do not take her class.
I can tell she loves math but she just doesn't explain how to actually work through & understand problems. The test questions are so much harder than the homework and she sort of expects you to just understand her way of thinking. I have spent so much time outside of class studying and I am still barely passing. Take a class with another professor.
Fun professor, ~1-2 hours/day of homework which is pretty standard. Ran out of time during lectures fairly often and concepts covered in homework were occasionally not thoroughly explained in the lectures. Like with most math classes, tests are a majority of the grade.
Great professor overall, was sometimes difficult to understand topics but was easily managed by textbook clarification. Attendance, while not graded, is important for understanding and knowing what will be on the exams.
Jamie is a great professor! Very intelligent and it shows. She explains things very well and goes over a lot of different examples. She is very strategic in her lesson plans and how they build off of each other. I am not a math person usually but I was able to understand her class very well! Definitely recommend.
beware of the skills test. its the stupidest thing ive ever encountered. so much homework, a couple hours everyday. lectures went fast and sometimes didnt cover everything on the homework. answers emails quickly, fast grader. tests are decently challenging but not terrible. would not recommend
Jamie is kind and incredibly knowledgeable but personality-wise a little unapproachable. She is straight to the point and always willing to answer questions that we all were thinking about and even anticipates them. She is genuinely GOOD at teaching, the way she describes things is so clear. MATH112 is just a hard class in general, its not her.
I was very well prepared for calculus after taking her for 114/115. and I'm not a top student. she has high standards in a good way, you will succeed if you take solid notes in class and keep up w/ the daily hw. Attendance was important bc she explains in more detail/differently than the book so there's usually a few ways to think about each topic
personality is great in class and its nice to have a teacher in large lecture who really cares about the class. If you go to office hours she'll clear up your issues with hw problems right away. We did have one test too hard but she allowed corrections for it and discussed solutions. I liked the problem solving opportunities she gave in class daily
Organized and efficient with class time, usually we had time at the end to work through more examples. Very predictable all quarter, you do have to put in the work and the 112 material can be challenging especially the last few weeks, but you'll know all quarter what's expected. I recommend her. I took Nimtz for M112 before and Jamie is way better.
I took this class with a different professor last quarter but she is so much better for linear algebra. This time I understand what we are doing because she explains it and describes candidly what's going on, rather than leaving it up to us to sift through formal notation in a 200-level class. she is also pretty funny. I wish I took her sooner.
My experience with Jamie was awful, way 2 much information thrown at us, too much HW which also was more complex and confusing to what we were learning. Quizes are ridiculously grade heavy, 1 needs to be dropped. Last week of school before finals we were still being taught new stuff. Everything was blown by YouTube taught me better than she did.
Her teaching style is called active learning. Beware that you will be teaching yourself despite being categorized as a lecture class. She does 4 tests that combined weigh 52% while HW is 14%… Would never recommend taking her class.
Jamie's class rarely contains lectures, we use a workbook to work through new material which helped me be able to understand the math better. She is super helpful and answers questions well. She doesn't take attendance but if you skip a day it can be hard to keep up as the math moves pretty fast.
She is maybe the worst test grader I have ever had in my life. You will get the question right and she just marks you because it was not exactly how she wanted it to be. Every time I receive a test back I actually want to scream cry and throw up because it's like she closes her eyes and marks random things down.
Lectures were disorganized, she doesn't explain the content clearly, and will often give several irrelevant ways to solve problems. The grading was incredibly test-heavy, with 4 quizzes taking up over 50% of the grade. Lots of confusingly-formatted homework as well. Would not recommend if you are not already adept at math or need organization.
The worst grader I've ever had. She will mark incorrect if you don't answer exactly how she wants it to be done even if the answer is correct. The feedback she gives on the test is unhelpful and doesn't explain why it is wrong. I can count on my hands the amount of times I've seen her write on the board because she doesn't lecture.
The tests are much more difficult than the homework assigned. Quizzes are biweekly and they are harshly graded- every minor mistake is docked off .5 points. The final is cumulative, there is no cheat sheet or study guide- your main source of studying overall is to re-do homework over the quarter and look over your quizzes.
McMullen was an amazing professor for me. I've struggled with math since my Junior year of high school, but the way McMullen teaches helped me so much! She mostly uses the chalkboard to teach her lectures, she gives a lot of methods to solve problems. There is a lot of homework, but they are relevant to quizzes. Remember to go to her office hours!
Very helpful in class. M114 is active learning which means you do investigations yourself during class and she helps. All M114 classes do it that way, not just this professor. She shows on the board what we're doing & lectures when we need background info. I would say definitely do not skip class if you have her, or else you'll miss needed info.
come to class. it's clear how you're supposed to show work on the tests because she does it for you on the board. my Friends who didn't go to class often had worse grades on the exams because they never saw how to write answers down. Showing work definitely matters in this class. McMullen is super helpful if you raise your hand and ask questions!
5 credit class with short daily hw. In my opinion it's an easy good grade if you do all the hw and study it again before the exams. Her lectures are very clear and organized. I found it really helpful to write down everything she put on the board and go back and study it again later. Dont be afraid to ask questions, she is positive and welcomes it!
I actually learned a lot in this course despite it being student-centered/workbook. She lectures enough that it's clear what you're supposed to be doing, without giving it away, and she walks around constantly to help you. Be sure to come & participate. Talking and working with people near me in the room helped the most. HW is daily but very short.
Excellent prof, cares deeply if you understand. Wants you to learn to do new problems yourself, not memorize examples. Only thing is I wish there were test corrections. But she writes good comments on each problem that gets marked down. At first I wasn't sure because she seems very young and casual, but her math and teaching are on point and clear.
I swear Jamie put these good reviews in herself because this course was actually the worst quality class i've ever taken. When the class average for the first test is 69% out of 300 students it def says something…
I really did not like the structure of her class. It was disorganized and relied heavily on group work, which I think is no way to teach a math class. I basically taught myself.
By far the hardest class I have taken at Western, Went in for office hours and that was horrible, we asked for help, and she just looked at us and asked what we could do to solve it. After we tried having a handful of our friends try and help. Overall if you have her switch out.
She does not lecture.
Professor McMullen has a teaching style that makes it very difficult to keep up sometimes, she doesn't really teach or lecture she just tells the class what homework section we're doing and then we work on it. Class isn't insanely hard but annoying because she doesn't teach or lecture at all so honestly so much of the learning you do on your own.
for what math 114 is, she explains things well when we have questions while letting us do the workbook by ourselves like she has to. I've had her for math 112 and she's an awesome lecturer, very energetic and clear on concepts. I wish there was much more of that in 114 but it's not how the curriculum is formatted and not up to her unfortunately.
I completely agree with the other comment that said she writes the good reviews herself because I have never heard a single other student in my class say anything positive about this woman. I can count on one hand the amount of times she actually lectured. She's rude, doesn't seem to care about student's learning, and is rarely helpful.
She doesn't teach you. The workbook is super hard to learn from as the wording usually doesn't make sense. The only way to learn in this class is to teach yourself from the incredibly confusing workbook, and when you have questions Jamie does little to help. She usually restates the problem the question is asking instead of being helpful in any way
She did not give any helpful advice and I basically had to teach myself. We worked in a workbook that explains a little bit of info (more than she would explain). It might be more cost effective to buy the workbook, and do it without signing up for the class, and then take the next higher up class. Terrible structure and I do not recommend.
Very difficult class. The way it is formatted does not work with my learning style and every friend I had in this class felt the same way. It was mainly student led and we learned from our textbook the whole quarter instead of getting taught on the board. When we did go over problems on the board it was hard to track. Good person bad teacher
doesn't lecture. if you want to learn the material prob take someone else's class, or be ready to teach yourself
I HATE JAMIE MCMULLEN.
She needs to be let go as a teacher. She was rude and barely contains lectures. This class felt like a high school class and makes me question westerns criteria for hiring educators. For any future victims for taking her class, first off i'm sorry for all you will endure but also be prepared to teach yourself or have to retake.
She does not explain anything. And she belittles people for asking questions.
not really the most helpful person ever. This class is really overwhelming because you have to teach yuorself all the material out of class tbh, so make sure you have spare time. Also lowkey gets annoyed if you dont understand something the first time... why math, Jamie, why?
despite what the guidelines say, I'm going to claim that the professor shows bias or favoritism for or against students. She will only answer your questions helpfully if you are doing well in the class. Which is almost impossible because she writes some stuff on the board and tells us to do our workbook with little guidance.Cumulative final=no note
Not my favorite ever.
It seems a lot of the time that Jamie does not want her students to succeed. She provides no resources to study for any of the tests. For the final she made 1 mock final which was harder than the actual exam and did not help. She doesn't allow notes at all. She also locked the online homeworks which was a very beneficial way to study.
They hate her because she represents math to them... Jamie is the messenger, don't shoot her! If you show up and try, it works. She is kind. She doesn't lecture like some of the other instructors do, which makes me sad, but she makes up for it by being based. Overall fantastic! Learning to love math on the journey to calc.
SERIOUSLY only take this class if you are good at math and conceptually understand precalculus already. If you do, it will be extremely easy and you can do everything for a 4.3 without spending a single second in class, usually in less than 2-3 hours per week. If you don't, you will get annihilated because she will teach you absolutely nothing.
She will belittle students for asking questions. What teacher is that? But it's okay she's not a teacher because she doesn't teach. You will take on the role of teaching yourself for every. Single. Day. Of. The. Quarter. Every day. Calls it active learning but doesn't even give out answer sheets to know if you've done it wrong.ijustwanttobetaught.
4 quizzes that weigh heavy. Not a lot of feedback. Takes active learning to a new level, assigns practice problems from the workbook and then maybe goes over a problem but class is spent working independently. I relied heavily on my classmates to learn. Inadequate study material for quizzes and the final.
calling her a teacher would be generous. There was little to no actual teaching that happened so we were expected to just figure everything out in our own. 0/10
I've had her for two quarters straight, and she just gets BETTER and BETTER. For finals, my alarm didn't set and so i woke up with only enough time to do the exam for half an hour. Instead of only giving me that, she gave me the full time in her office. THAT'S a caring teacher. Ask her about her recent backpacking/hiking trips!
Jamie only lectures when everyone is confused on a subject and you have to be very specific if you are confused on something. Most of the class is just learning as you go and teaching yourself so don't expect to have help unless you ask for it.
I would not suggest this professor if I was forced to. If you're wondering how her score is so decent, notice that on January 3 several 5 star reviews come out of nowhere. She is incredibly condescending both in and out of office hours, and treats her job as if the university's fault she's so bad at teaching. Please choose any other professor.
I don't know why she has a low score, I'd say she was all around a good professor. She's engaging during class and teaches at the perfect pace. She pauses a lot in case there are questions and walks around during independent work to help out.
Absolute goat. Class is very lecture heavy, make sure to ask questions. If you attend office hours, she's happy to talk to you. I found her very helpful.
