It's kinda sad when another prof teaching a different class is clarifying your lectures because you are too vague. Also tends to come across as pompous. Assumes one minute you know everything about the class, the next, nothing. Very un-user friendly.
Very vague and doesn't explain things properly the first or second time, though I wouldn't know about a third. Assumes that everyone is either all-knowing or stupid. Seems to be fair, though.
The worst proff. I have ever had. why they hired him is beyond me?? His lecture notes are unclear, All he does is ask questions in class, so basically your note taking will come from the comments of students. I wonder who the teacher is here?
Nice guy, but terrible lecturer. Ok on a one to one basis though.
Rather pompous, makes frequent references to his credentials. Constantly gives out work that he expects completed with the outmost zeal (told my class that we should all expect C's and D's on mid-terms). Also, expect to pay through the nose for texts; for his two classes, I spent about $500.
Why oh why is he here? He makes Non-western a brutal class. His notes and lectures are scrambled and very unclear. I kinda feel bad for the guy..
Teaching ability... he has some?! Ummm no
I began this course excited to learn about a new realm of history. Instead, this prof's greatest asset to classes are his credentials. 20% of the mark comes from our poorly done in class assignments. His marking is fair, but I find him condescending, and he leaves the lecturing up to the keeners.
By far the worst prof i have had at Acadia in my 4 years. He figured he was the only course i had all year, did not teach the subject well and came across as an ass, who was a scholar and not a professor
No Comments
At the beginning of the year, clarity was a huge issue, but once one goes and talks to him and asks for help, things fall into place. More than willing to extend deadlines and offers to hold study sessions for exams and the like.
Great Professor, encouraged class discussion (though few participated) and didn't hold your hand. Encouraged students to learn on their own, making the material stick. If you READ THE TEXT and go to classes it is very clear what he is getting at. Looks a little like Christopher Walken ...
At first I didn't like this prof, he was intimidating and i was afraid to approach him, but he is a totaly different person one on one, he will give u advise about your paper and in the end proved to be fair.
Whidden is awesome. All the idiots who think he is tough or unfair are just pissed that they did not get a better mark, probably because they didnt put in the effort! Go Whidden Go!
Wonderful professor. I think that most of the comments here are from pepople that expected to be spoon-fed, and that is not Whidden's style. He expects you to do some work, or at least read the text. The in class assignments helped clarify much of what we learned
Didn't like him at first, but then he improved greatly, also, he's adjusting to a new school, and makes you think, instead of saying this, this, and this, learn it, isn't this what unviersity's about?
Interesting class
he has a different style of teaching, but the only reason that i came out of that class with a good mark was because of the 20% class mark
Interesting class, interesting lecturer. Like the idea of group work in class.
Worst prof I have ever encountered and he is dumbing down the history programe. Nobody in class knows what is due or expected, plus he repeats lectures. Not on the same level as other Acadia profs.
Excellent prof who listens to his students, provided they don't come at him with a snotty attitude, and is more than willing to help. Tries to be fair to students about due dates and the like. Very interesting lecturer.
WORST prof I have ever encountered. Slamming doors and threatening students is unacceptable, yet is Whidden's way and I was not the only one he did that to. Praying that the university revokes his contract so that more students don't have to endure his very dumbed down classes.
Though I did well in the class, I didn't learn anything I didn't already know from other courses. While infantilizing, he didn't actually teach anything, so the course was still tough. Very unclear on assignment expectations. Avoid if possible.
Engaging lecturer. Very into his course work.
I like him - knowledgeable and reasonable - you will learn a lot
Missed calling as kindergarten teacher. Talks down to class. Massive assignment repetition. Creates busywork. Doesn't use AA resources to contact class, ie. doesn't email students when class is cancelled. Too long getting assignments back. Schedules review sessions during other classes. Seemingly arbitrary grading & few substantial comments. >_<
write what he wants, you'll do fine. otherwise, you are screwed. hard to take notes, doesn't teach, goes off on wild tangents and talks too fast. very limited view on history
This professor is the best. Finally someone who can teach intelligent students at a university level.
A bit unclear about objectives and expectations sometimes, but he's fair and VERY knowledgeable. You 're gaurenteed to learn something in his class..
Professor Jamie Whidden rocks! The most interesting professor I have had in Middle Eastern and African studies. His interest in Arabic has me speaking and learning the language again after a 10 years+ absence. Can't wait to read further books and articles by Jamie Whidden. Thanks!
I, along with several others, seem to have a personality clash with this man for whatever reason. It's definitely obvious when he doesn't like you. Class could have been interesting but wasn't set up the best possible way. Did learn some but would never take a class with him again.
Jamie Whidden, the sight of him makes me squinch inside. I and a few others had a personality clash with him. His teaching isn't good and if he doesn't take an automatic liking to you. Your success in the class is limited.
At first i thought this guy was crazy and had no idea what he was doing in the class. After a bit i caught on and realized he knows exactly what he's doing - he wants you to learn the material yourself, rather than throw facts at you to vomit back on an exam. Go to class, read the books, and think a little but, and you'll do fine.
great proff
It's often hard to tell where he's coming from... lectures don't seem to follow either textbook and the textbooks could correspond better. But I realized later that he doesn't follow the texts closely because he wants to give students a complete understanding of the broad course. Most people get same mark. Tough class - lectures feel long.
He is actually incompetent. The only reason I'm in his class is because I need to get my degree. He doesn't actually teach you anything. He just makes you read the text and then discuss it in class. So he spends most the class just asking us for our opinion.
His lectures were a little scattered and somewhat hard to follow at times.
Brilliant! Thank you for not just reading lecture notes and have us think for ourselves about important issues.
Had this prof for several classes, and he is not as bad as most people make him out to be if you actually take the time to speak to him during office hours. Subjects were interesting and he enjoys his job.
Class was interesting and learned alot. Engaging lecturer because he knows everything about the topic.
great prof! he really understands what he is talking about. i had him for middle east history. extremely fair with marking and great if you need an extension. he knows what he is talking about. and the text is not too bad to read!
Excellent Prof. engages students by showing a true interest in the subject matter. In Anc. Mid. East, he took as class of people who knew nothing, and not only educated, but created real interest. A true credit to the Acadia History Department. Regardless of what others may have said, he's charismatic and interesting; get a class with Whidden!
extremely helpful,
Totally disinteresting, in my opinion. I hated his class and didn't like him much as a prof but to each their own! Wouldn't take a course from him ever again unless I had no other choice!
I Find that some comments about the scattered feel to the lectures are true when it comes to Professor Whiddens first year Glbal Hitory course. However, this was not present during his (2000-level)Ancient Islamic History course in the previous semester. I feel that Professor Whidden does best in the smaller setting with students who are showing mor
Thought his lectures were interesting and knowledge was extensive. He is very helpful.
Knowledgeable and helpful. My writing improved immensely in this course.
Switches into a english accent at random times.
Awesome prof. Smart man.
great prof, great lectures.
Knows the material and makes sure the students do as well.Interesting and smart!
Prof. Whidden is a fairly good professor but his lectures are a little disjointed and unclear. It is difficult to find the key points in his power points. If you stick to the textbook, you will do pretty well in the class.
He is knowledgeable and takes time to explain things if you ask.
amazing prof. learned tons.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Has unclear expectations of students.
This man knows his stuff. The topic didn't interest much at all prior to the class, but he explains it really well and makes you interested. I liked that he made us get involved with trying to solve the crises ourselves. He's a fairly decent marker, as well.
I thought Jamie was a good prof, he is really laid back and chill. He is a good marker and will not fail you. It is impossible to fail this class if you write the tests. His lectures were boring, a lot of guest lectures, attendance is not mandatory for a good mark, all of the answers are on the ppt's and all of his tests are in the same format
Very group oriented, well versed and knowledgeable in what he was talking about. Very easy to do well in his class and also has a very easy going and friendly attitude.
Definitely one of the best history professor's at the school. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches, not a difficult marker at all and if you ever have any questions just speaking to him one on one should clarify any problems.
He was an ok professor. I liked him. The only bad part about this course was he wasn't very clear on what the readings are.
great prof. i always love taking his courses. one bit of advice though, check your emails constantly before the exam.
Very easy going professor, go to classes he will always explain what exactly he is looking for within his assignments.
Mr. Whidden was unorganized and often late to his own class. The class was taught through the text book with no real lectures or interesting discussions. Probably one of the worst teachers at Acadia...
Brilliant Professor! A little eccentric, but all the better for it. He's seriously knows his stuff, he's laid back and flexible with assignments (NO LATE DEADLINE!) Would take every class he taught if I could.
Possibly one of the most intelligent professors at Acadia. Very lax and easy going. If you show up to class you will learn a lot and do very well.
Amazing professor. He knows his stuff. Very inspirational.
Helpful and knows his stuff. A true academic.
Great academic and shares his knowledge.
Brilliant. learned so much about a subject I thought was really hard. Love how laid back he is about deadlines. If you do the readings and go to class you will be amazed at what he can teach you, but he doesn't demand anything so the onus is on you to be a good student. Do it, it's worth it!
Whidden is a nice enough prof and you can tell he really cares about what he teaches. What holds him back is his lecture style. Most classes were used to discuss homework questions from the readings. While this made for an easy class it was very difficult to take notes. I did well in his class but would advise against him. Has unclear expectations.
I like Dr Whidden, I've taken multiple courses from him. Expect to do a lot of readings. One thing I've always really liked about his courses is that there are a lot of smallish assignments so there's less pressure if you get a bad mark.
Whidden is an amazing prof. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable in his area of expertise (Middle East) but he is also very understanding and cares about teaching. His laid back, teaching methods lets you feel like you're just talking to an average person and not an expert. Best prof I've ever had. Rarely ever textbooks, mostly small novels.
Dr. Whidden is nice enough but has a bad, disorganized teaching style. I love history and this was my least favourite course taken at Acadia. I can't tell you one thing I learned from his lectures the whole semester. Basically a bunch of random facts that are disconnected. He doesn't explain what you're going to be tested on clearly either.
Hes a nice guy, and clearly passionate. I thought this would be a super fun class since I love history, but Im so shy and he makes you do group work every single class. I stopped going after the midterm with my mark at like a B-. If you dont read the textbook and pay very very close attention to detail, you wont pass any of his weekly tests
Overall Dr. Whidden is a great prof, he cares a lot about his students and wants them to do well. Class can sometimes be boring and unclear but he is very approachable and open to any questions you have.
Very disorganized, does not come to class prepared. Asks way too much (have to upload notes from every class to ACORN for participation). Group work every day doing the same thing. Not clear.
Had I known of Whiddens teaching style, I would never have taken this course. He is arrogant, disorganized and does not care about students. I would seriously recommend you avoid any of his courses if you would like to keep your GPA and enjoy your time in university.
Seems genuinely nice, but lacks organizational and speaking skills needed for teaching. Incredibly floaty, speaks almost as if we all are supposed to know everything already. Unclear to the point of rarely knowing what you are supposed, and every time you enter class being terrified that there was something you were supposed to have done.
This is a terrible class. You deserve better. If you have any pride for yourself and your grades you will turn around now and remove yourself from this course. This will hurt your GPA and your academics. Whidden is a terrible Prof who doesn't care about students and helping them improve.
Prof Whidden has provided me with the worst course experience of all at Acadia University. He is completely unorganized, changes directions all the time and comes to class constantly unprepared. He lacks the skills and empathy of a good professor. If you have the choice of choosing or avoiding one of his classes, I would recommend staying away.
Dr. Whidden is so very disorganized and unprepared that it is impossible to learn anything in this class. Every class just feels like an improvised spiel where you are left wondering what you even learned. Every class is boring and long. It is such a drag. Please stay clear of this prof.
Dr Whidden's class is a mess. There are weekly quizzes where there are more than one correct answer but he only considers one to be the 'best' answer. His lectures often contradict the textbook but he says that when you're being marked to always go off the textbook and not him. What is the point of going to lectures?
Jamie Whidden is a very frustrating professor. He is very inconsistent and often changes what he is looking for every single class. It is very annoying. He often doesn't provide clearly written assignment instructions. When he is marking, it almost seems like he pulls a grade out of thin air, no criteria to back it up! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Never have I had such a professor as oblivious to academic rules as Jamie Whidden. He may have handed out a syllabus at the start of the semester but he did not stick to it. He made changes to assignment expectations and deadlines regularly without notifying students. He also doesn't use grading rubrics. His teaching style is one to avoid.
It seemed a bit unstructured and confusing at first, but eventually you figure it out and see how everything connects together. Gives a lot of lenience with due dates. The discussions and material were quite interesting. Not too hard if you do the readings and make an effort.
This class was terrible. Avoid Jamie Whidden like the black plague!!
Would never have taken the class had I've known. It's been a boring and challenging elective.
In one class he taught us contradictory information to the textbook and handed out a quiz. There was multiple choice with the answer being either what he taught us in class or from the book. When it was corrected, he said that we dont go off of what he teaches us in class but we go off of what the textbook says. What? That is not fair! Avoid!!!!!!
History 1413 was uninteresing. Whidden looked like a nice guy but he didn't really teach relevant information in the class related to the textbook. In his quizzes, and tests, he wants us to rely heavily on information provided in the textbook even though he barely talks about them. I heard he was very helpful in extra help. Wouldn't take again.
Jamie Whidden is an incredibly unhelpful prof. Directions were unclear, material was gone over poorly and dully. His lectures did more damage to my understanding that helpfulness. When I went for him for help he did very little. He does not have clear marking schemes. He often comes up with a number in his head without anything to back it up.
I loved this class. Great opportunities for class participation. Whidden knows his stuff and understands how people think so can tailor the course for the students. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to go back to high school. He is a true academic.
This was the 2nd class I took from Whidden. This guy is a true academic. So he doesnt lead you through the course material like you are in kindergarden but he develops critical thinking skills and will take the time to answer any questions or clear up confusion. I had a health issue part way through the term and he gave me the extensions I needed.
Directions unfair, bad grading, unfair prof. Would not recommend
Every class had an unclear and boring group project, wish he would just lecture and actually teach us rather than doing group work that sometimes does not relate to the material. Asks too much for reading and expects way too much in essays and tests for a first year course. At least he gives test questions and outlines in advance.
Hes so unclear and unorganized. He changed how the midterm would be written the night before and all the classes we just random class discussions that we pretty irrelevant. He claims that he wants you to think critically and form you own ideas about history but gives poor marks if he doesnt agree with what you say in your midterm or essay.
Unclear grading criteria and assignments. (Am not a history major so take this review with a grain of salt) Consistently unclear and seemingly disorganized. Feedback provided was valuable and specific. Exams and midterms were easy to write.
Speaks fo the entire lecture but doesn't say anything valuable, but expects attendance. Grades don't make any sense, Expect the class to be taught through group presentations, rambles when giving feedback, doesn't speak clearly or loudly, grades are distributed to make you fail the course. I would give u a 0 but that's not possible, so I give u a 1
This class was one of my least favourites, that I wished I could've dropped earlier. All that the class consists of, is doing presentations or formats by the end of the week, and it's just very repetitive. The lectures make no sense, and you get bored pretty easily.
Repetitive class, read the textbook and you will be fine. Would recommend starting the term paper in advance, as it is very long. He is interested in what he's talking about though.
Not very clear during lectures. Lectures almost seemed like you needed to already know the material very well to have a real understanding. He lectures like he's just having a conversation with another academic. Definitely not my style of lecturer at all.
Extremely unclear in directions. On several occasions assigned something, unassigned it, modified the requirements, re-assigned it, and changed the due date within five minutes of rambling to himself. Lectures are an unidentifiable slurry of words that makes trying to understand the material even worse. Avoid this prof at all costs.
No clear methods of grading. We have been receiving asterisks (*) as a grade on assignments, so all I can guess is that we're getting something out of five stars. In a second year University level course. Profs like this make me question my choice of going to Acadia. I recommend staying clear of this prof if you can.
It was easier to understand the course if you just ignored him completely. Lectures are incoherent ramblings at best, and criteria for assignments can change at any moment, for better or worse.
Whidden is a straight up bad prof. Weekly assignment readings were way too much work. He asked questions to which there was no answer to in the readings. Didn't really ever give a lecture. We had to do a book review, answer a 20 question assignment on the book and then do the term paper and presentation during the last 4 weeks of classes.
Wow! I went to Acadia and actually found an academic who is a great teacher. No more high school!
He is by far one of the WORST professors at Acadia. Doesn't teach a single thing. Random incoherent ramblings. Wish I dropped day one.
Boring and dry. Doesn't teach. One of the worst professors I've ever had. Jumps around different topics and rambles. We're all confused.
do not take any of his courses. he is the worst prof I've ever had. he is confusing and doesn't really teach. you also never know what your grade actually is.
He is confusing and flip flops back and forth between topics so much you dont really understand. He is helpful when you go to him for questions, but get ready to be confused alot.
What a disaster. The level of disorganization was unacceptable. The open refusal to provide an outline/rubric for the paper, presentation, & paper left many of us confused. I didn't appreciate the attitude my peers got when asking for clarification. He has lost his passion, which is sad because he is knowledgeable, but the class suffers for it.
Professor Whidden's class had unclear assignments and grading. However, the feedback provided was helpful. unstuck ai and other tools like ChatGPT were useful for studying and preparing for the exams.
He's a nice enough guy but oh my goodness classes are a slog. It's always a mix of boring (occasionally contradictory) word soup and then a group participation activity. Going to class makes your brain leak out of your skull and skipping brings your grade down. Avoid.
