Crazy hard... I was confident on Math, but it was too hard to good grade. If you are brave, take him. I never sure you to get over B.
I recommend avoiding Dr. Carter's classes unless you are already familiar with the subject material and are just taking it for credit. Easy grading system, but terrible teacher. Rambles, jumps around during explanations, insists on teaching "just like the book" even when makes it more complicated. Not particularly helpful either.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! she is by far the worst math teacher i've ever had, tons of ppl drop her class bcuz she doesnt kno how to teach. Hws r ridiculously long and difficult, notes r STRAIGHT from the book. She gives out 50-70 problems/hw assignment, not including sub-parts, expect doing 1 assignment for 6-7 hrs. Every1 hates her. tests r like the hws
Horrible Horrible Teacher. I have no idea how this woman got a job teaching math. She doesnt have an adequate grasp of the Mathematical concepts to be teaching it to students. Her lectures are fragmented, full of skipped concepts, slow and boring. She takes ages to explain easy concepts to the T and skips quickly over difficult concepts. Basi
Horrible Teacher. She doesnt understand the concepts shes teaching. Her lectures are fragmented, full of skipped concepts, slow and boring. Be prepared to teach yourself the material. There is little to no feedback on tests and if you ask a question in class be prepared to be belittled. If you want to make Math hell be sure to take her.
You might as well not go to class and read the book instead. She makes the final worth 30% of your grade, and makes it very hard, so what small chance you have of a good grade is sabotaged.Takes her forever to get back tests and frequently cancels office hours. Seems very unsure of herself as a teacher. Overall annoying class format. Avoid.
Pretty bad teacher. She doesn't have a comfortable grasp of the concepts. She spends almost half the lecture trying to explain ONE proof that she often stumbles on. The final is worth 30% and was ridiculously difficult- nobody left the final thinking they passed. She canceled almost all of her office hours during the last 2 months of class. Avoid.
Worst teacher Ive ever had.Bad attitude when questions askd;all wrk online(too much);lazy teacher;cancels many office hrs;doesnt know math & needs sol.man to solve own hw problems;Final is 30% of grade;denies partial-credit when not EXACTLY as her solution;when half class was failing, she gave senseless extracredit;assume getting a C or B,not better
As one review said, she seems to lack the fundamentals. Easily goes into 'confused mode' when student asks a tougher question. Cannot really explain/teach concepts. Tests not impossible, but throws ppl off b/c it only contains 1 ques. / section in text covered. (<10 Qs per test) I'm sure there are better profs out there to choose.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. All online homework, quizzes, and tests. Exams use problems straight from the online problems. Lecture is based off of explaining concepts behind examples. Liked her so much I took 193 with her too.
Nice person, but totally disorganized, never uses the text, shows her frustration when a student asks a question that might require her to repeat herself. I was in the hospital for a week, missed an Exam, she wouldn't let me make it up, I offered to take half credit and she refused. Does not work with students to help them understand the concept.
shes an easy A teacher but after the semester you learnt nothing. It is because her exams are all based on the online works, so if you practice enough online, you will be fine on the exam and final. DO NOT EXPECT to learn from her
The class is heavily online based, where homework is not mandatory, but the quizzes and tests act in lieu of it. In class, the work is easy but the exams are heavily based off the book and online quizzes. She gives suggested review problems for each exam. as long as you study those and understand how to do them, you are guaranteed a good grade.
Don't take Carter if you're not looking for an online class. The lengthy amount of online homework doesn't correspond with the lectures, which are based off of theorems. You need to dedicate a lot of time to the class because projects, test, & quizzes are all due on the day of an exam. Opt for a proffessor who teaches, not a computer!!!
She is fully aware that students struggle with math which is why she is not a robot. She went to Harvard so you can expect her to put the same effort on her students to learn better. She will slowly guide you through each and every course materials. Just give your attention. She is one of the best teachers I have had for Math.
Although the homework load and tests are pretty bearable, do not take Carter if you actually want to learn something! Class is a waste. You have to go home and teach yourself. She is not helpful in class or outside (office hours are a joke) and she takes over two weeks to get tests back! Avoid avoid avoid!
Ms. Carter is great teacher, the mymathlab is very helpful as well because i am one of those people that forgets how to do something by the time i get home. she explains everything really well and is very helpful and has a lot of office hours. i totally recommend her if you struggle with math.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I had no choice because she was the only one that fit into my schedule but you learn nothing from her. Math is my favorite subject, except with her I stopped caring a while ago and just try to get a good grade now. She doesn't know how to do some of the problems she assigns in the hw!!! And tests are kinda ridiculous.
Absolutely fabulous teacher. She explains all concepts in extreme detail and answers every question thoroughly. She's always willing to help and makes herself available to students whenever they need assistance. She uses MyMathLab, so all the material is available online. If you do the homework, its almost impossible not to pass her class.
She's really great, friendly and clear in the problems. It's just a matter of asking her to explain it or to talk to her in the office hours. Her final was a bit ridiculous, however, she ends up dropping the lowest test score anyway so it's easy to get a passing grade as long as you do the homework online.
I have never gotten her answer a quetion, and never seen her teach. She gave some questions do not make sense too.
I don't get all these comments about her being unhelpful. Dr. is very helpful, she just doesn't want to hear the same question about the same problem OVER AND OVER. You wouldn't, either. Just go during office hours and she will definitely help you with what you are struggling with, and if she won't answer every problem, that is what a tutor is for.
A word to describe Prof. Carter? "Demoralizing." Far too much of her grades are focused on tests, but equal time is expected to be devoted to sections that are only worth 19 of the total score tests are worth. Doesn't show for her own tests, and only shows concern for struggling students when it's too late to do something. Find another teacher.
Professor Carter is generally an extremely friendly teacher. The homework and quizzes are done online, and they're fairly challenging. HOWEVER (capitalized for emphasis), TESTS ARE VERY, VERY DIFFICULT. On top of that, homework and quizzes will NOT make much of a difference (if any at all) in your grade. Your grade is your test grades.
Excellent professor who treats students like adults. Really knows how to make math make sense. If you don't understand something, ask in class and she'll answer. Willing to solve hard problems in class to show how it's done. Strict no late assignment policy, but easy homework and gives review guides before tests. Tests aren't hard if you study.
Homework and quizzes barely count for anything towards your grade. The tests are SO HARD. DO NO TAKE HER CLASS unless you're a calculus genius.
Responsive to questions. 3 curve-ball MT's (45%). However, the Final is straightforward (25%). Fair online quizzes & hw's together count as much as the final (25%). 17 discussion questions (5%). EC opp at end. 23 of class dropped out after 2nd MT. Don't drop if you're willing to work - the Final might save you. Most of remaining students got A's.
(Fall '14): Dr. Carter seemed to me a gentle and helpful professor. Her tests are tough, but she gives partial credit for showing relevant work. I had to work very hard to get B's & A's on those. Her final was easy when compared to the other tests and I think many got A's on it. More than half did drop out, but that's common for online courses.
Nightmares
Yes, Jamylle Carter is a challenging teacher. Her tests are extremely hard. She does give you examples to go over in preparation for a test (and usually the ones to go over are the ones at the end of the section that are extremely hard to solve!) However, she is really nice and helpful during office hours. She cares. And the challenge is rewarding.
I have to change my mind about Dr. Carter. She is a very tough teacher, and she was there for me at the start of the semester, but she is "getting annoyed" with me, & her lectures make zero sense. I've had to read my book and re-teach myself all the material after her lectures every time (and get help from Khan). Her tests are ridiculous.
her my math lab requirements are very time consuming. homework and the quizes take a lot of time and dont count much towards your grades. she allows you to have a calculator for the tests and a page of notes which i liked.
I took this class online and I regret it. I had a hard time getting a hold of her when I needed her and she had someone else proctor most of her tests. I would not suggest her for online classes.
Honestly the worst math teacher I have had. Do not take, unless you want to fail. Dr. Carter is very knowledgeable but unfortunately can't translate that into her lectures. I was barely able to pass the class, but felt that I deserved a better grade if it were with a different teacher. Was sometimes disrespectful. All in all, I do not recommend.
Not helpful at all. She would get upset if I didn't understand a problem she was going over on the board and would get upset whenever I'd ask her questions during class. Ended up dropping her class and taking it with another professor because of how rude and unhelpful she was. I don't recommend..
hard to understand. tons of homework. very hard tests. not very helpful.
Dr. Carter was awesome. She gave great feedback. Her lectures were very thorough. She was very helpful during her office hours. Grading was fair. Your grade was based on your work. Gave 3 exams and a final. You were able to use 1 full 8 12 by 11 page of notes front and back and a calculator. I would definitely take her again!
I was not expecting Professor Carter (I had another teacher, but she retired before class started and Carter took over). She gives so much homework! Like... EVERY DAY INCLUDING WEEKENDS. She gave helpful things like practice exams, but since there was so much homework, I could hardly touch them! Tests have questions like on homework but harder.
The class was not very easy because of a lot of homework. The teacher gave preparation tests review before each test in class which were very helpful because the questions on tests were almost the same, and it was much easily to do well on tests. I would infinitely recommend to take her class.
The class was not very easy because of a lot of homework. The teacher gave preparation tests review before each test in class which were very helpful because the questions on tests were almost the same, and it was much easily to do well on tests. I would definitely recommend to take her class.
At first I didn't like her. I ended up appreciating her as a teacher when it came to Math- 120. Awesome teacher. She gets the whole class involved and has a great sense of humor. You can tell she loves teaching. She is very down to earth and is just all together a great teacher. She is there to help you pass! I still hate math though!
Dr. C as she likes to be called is not a bad person. But she isn't a great teacher. Sure she knows mathematics, but her teaching skills are not as wonderful as her math skills. She seems to prefer working with excelling students rather then the ones who are struggling. I don't understand teachers that only teach those who know? Wont take again.
Dr. Carter wants to help her students succeed. She responds very quickly via email. Homework is assigned on mymathlab. Only thing about Dr. C is that if she can get easily frustrated with students who don't know the answer to what she's asking. Otherwise, she's a good professor.
Overall a good teacher. Allows a note sheet front and back, gives review packet one week prior to an exam. 3 exams and one final. Uses MyMathLab, where you do your homework online. It does mean you will have to spend more $$
Extremely rude, respected by little to no students in class, refuses to teach any other way of problem solving besides her own.
She seems to get annoyed with students when they ask questions sometimes. There is usually 2 sections of homework per class and two quizzes every weekend. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on my math lab. She allows students to have a full page of notes front and back for each exam. Overall a good teacher. Do the homework and you'll be fine.
She worked really hard to get the material across, and it showed. I got it. Would really recommend Professor Carter.
I took her for math 192. She is not bad, but I can't say that she is good. If you are NOT good at math, then she would be hard for you. Half of the class dropped in my class. But if you already know the materials, its going to be an easy A. I got an A with a little effort, so its not that hard. What got me really irritated is her homework.
I didn't get alot of what was taught in class until I went home and spent more time with it.
If you want step by step teaching then take her. I'm bad at math but her teaching helped me. She does give a good amount of hw online, but one of my classes complained about it and she started giving us less. Her tests are moderate to hard, but if you know good amount of the material you can get a C . She was nice, but would be kinda rude sometimes
Good teacher especially for those who has a comparatively weak math basis. She gives respect to students in class and has patience to explain step by step. However, she takes rules seriously so that Do not ask unnecessary questions out of class and her office hours. Seize your time!
I thought she was a wonderful teacher. She was very good at teaching in a way that was easily understood. I looked forward to her class everyday.
I took this Pre-Calculus class online. Homework and quizzes are self taught and thus time consuming, but you get unlimited attempts to correct your work as long as it all gets done on time. If you master the material on the study guides, it's almost guaranteed that you'll pass the tests.
Took this as a summer 6wk that met once/week for 3 hours. Assignments were done online- class was only for exams. Carter did not lecture, give notes, or do ANYTHING to prepare us for the exam besides offer a short 5 min. review session before exams. She speaks in a condescending tone when asked questions, doesn't care to help, no response to emails
Extremely dependent on online system- no common sense used for grading. You will work through long, tedious problems on exams, arrive at the correct answer but it will not matter at all if entered one decimal point off or as a decimal instead of fraction. Despite having all work shown on the required scratch paper, she will NOT consider this.
Felt like her class was for people who already knew what they were doing. Carter is a nice lady, but can be slightly rude at times. The online homework takes way too long to even finish. The tests look different than what we learned in class. This class is brutal, I recommend finding a different Calc 2 teacher if you can!
The only good thing about her class was on tests you were allowed a sheet of paper. Hours and Hours of HW. Hw is nothing like the tests. Class was designed for people who have already taken Calc 2. If you are not naturally inclined in math do not take her class.
exam is nothing like the lecture she teaches in class. planty of hw need to be done each week. cnm
Dr. Carter is the BOMB. No textbook, not mandatory to go to zoom classes, and super easy tests. She made stats super easy and I actually learned a lot. Shes super nice and has been through this COVID process. 10/10 recommend her, especially for people who arent good at math.
Dr. Carter is a the best teacher I ever had. You have unlimited chances to do the homework online but you wont even need it unless if you didnt attend class.I didnt have to purchase a book because she had it online for us for free .
An average professor. Easy to get 100% with quizzes and homework, but must study really hard for tests. She can be a bit rude at times if youre asking questions, but mostly kind. Id take this class if you already have a good basis for math.
She's one of the best teacher at DVC! She respect everyone in her class and is very friendly. HW are all online and if you commit your time working on it, you'll get 100%. However, it's true that I admit that there are lots of HW that you might spend more than 10 hours a week, be ready to work hard. Exam questions are easy, but can be quite tricky.
Was a bit cautious because the reviews on here put the professor down, but I can assure you that Professor Carter is a solid choice and cares about her students. I took her class in the summer of the pandemic, so everything is online. The workload is definitely tedious but not something you can't handle. She is quick to reply and easy to approach.
She seemed good until the last day. Gave me a zero on a stupid "Meet and Greet" assignment when it was due at the beginning of the semester, but she failed to grade until the very last day. And she failed to respond to the two emails I sent her asking for partial credit or at least a reasoning for the zero despite me doing the assignment.
As long as you continue doing your homework on MathLab and take the time to get A's on them, you'll pass the class. I didn't take the time in the beginning of the semester and that is why I got a B. However, taking this course online, I feel like I learned almost nothing. Lectures were not too helpful. I felt like she was reading off a page.
Professor Carter uses a website to provide the coursework, and students have a lot of time and unlimited attempts on homework and quizzes, which I loved. The course was entirely online, except when the class would meet for a zoom administered exam once a month. Her tests were open note as well. The work is tedious so time management is your friend.
She is an okay professor. Most of work is done online and you can get an A on all of it if you spend time. She is very generous with how she does tests (groups, 48 hours, open everything) and felt like it was the best possible solution to how to test during COVID/online times.
Tough class, but if you can scratch out an A, you'll be in very good shape for upper divs. Very fair teacher and fairly accessible, for sure would take this class again
She isn't very nice and doesn't have much care for students. She has an app teach completely and could get pricey for some. Only have to show up for exams online. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Already being a Calc III class, it wasn't going to be easy, she didn't make it any easier. Not understanding of technical/ personal issues during the pandemic with almost no flexibility. Lectures sucked and didn't help; spent more time on YouTube than in class. Absolutely no final exam prep; gave a short 30 minutes of "help" then ended zoom call.
Professor Carter takes absolutely forever to respond back to you. Ive never encountered another professor who takes this long to respond back. Also, shes comes off as rude when youre trying to get help from her and the least bit helpful. Try to look for another professor if you can honestly.
I took her online class that only meets for the exams. The class overall can be a bit tough but Dr. Carter gives you plenty of time to complete the work. Shes also super caring too and willing to hear your concerns.
Listen if you want to regret it.
Dr. Carter is AMAZING! You can tell she truly cares about her students and wants you to pass math. She creates a very good environment where you can feel safe asking questions you might have felt stupid for asking. The material is super easy to follow through, she goes through things slowly and takes the time to make sure everyone understands.
SHE LITERALLY LETS YOU USE THE INTERNET FOR HER EXAMS!!!!! I was blown away at how easy this class was. If you put in the effort, she will help you succeed. She opens all her due dates MONTHS back. She is very caring and her lectures are super easy to follow. THIS IS UR SIGN TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Dr. Carter helped many students understand statistics even when the concepts were really tough. She teaches pretty slowly, which did not work for me but helped a lot of my classmates. Her notes are very detailed and her practice test looks exactly like the test (you can literally use the internet if really needed but definitely not necessary).
She is an amazing professor! She cares deeply about her students and wants everyone to succeed. I took her hybrid class and everything was super clear and easy. She gives very detailed lecture worksheets which help TREMENDOUSLY. Exams are open note!!!! I highly recommend!
All assignments on Pearson. The 4 credit class has 4-5 hours of work per week. Its a hard curriculum to learn but the Pearson problems aren't that bad. Mostly chegg-able
Although the class is extremely long, it's easy to keep yourself occupied. If you miss class or are late, your grade will drop which is kind of annoying. But if you show up it'll be an easy class to pass.
I loved having statistics with Dr. Carter. The material in the class was very straightforward, and Dr. Carter taught it in a way that was easy to understand. There are 3 tests in total, homework after every class, quizzes, and a final group project. All the exams were open book and open note. Overall, I really enjoyed this class!
She's super lenient about homework due dates and even drops your lowest test score. I barely attended classes because she posts recordings of the lectures to let students review or complete on their own time. all tests are open-note. The only way you can fail this class is by not doing the homework or tests.
I enjoyed my semester with Dr. Carter! Her grading policies are generally accommodating and an extremely reasonable amount of homework-- this class is completely achievable with effort! Exams were open notes (paper and digital) and the lecture notes covered all the material.
Does not respond to emails. Avoid!!
Her class looks like: - 2023 Fall Semester. VERY relaxed with deadlines (do them before the chapter exams) to get full credit. Hybrid class means you only go to school for the exam; the rest are live Zoom. 4 exams; weekly hw with 2x try and 1x try quizzes.
I walked in with a 93% on final day and ended the class with a C. You won't learn much in this class, and she is a bad communicator. Before her class, I never received a grade lower than an A. Only take this class if you want to ruin your mental health and GPA.
She cares about her students, but her lectures are confusing. Tests are moderately hard, but assignments can save your final grade. Take other professor if you can, but overall an okay class.
Please never take this teacher's class, she is the most worth math teacher I have ever see, you can't learn anything, and she is really old fashioned, you can't talk or do anything in her class, and you must follow the instructions of her, even you have greater method, if you use you will loss score
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OVER THE SUMMER UNLESS YOU WANT TO TEACH YOURSELF STATS. I had the worst experience with this class. You pay $100 for an interactive textbook. It took HOURS every couple days to complete the readings and HW assignments and quizzes. The exams were in person and SO HARD. Also, not a good teacher since she wasn't teaching us.
Terrible experience. Insane amounts of homework (hours daily) using a $55 online textbook. Condescending, interrupts students, and makes them feel stupid. Quizzes/exams are unfair and beyond what's taught. Lectures are slow, incomplete, and unhelpful. Avoid this professor if possible.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. Quizzes/exams are unfair and barely related to what's being taught in class, much harder. Way too much homework, hours daily. Very condescending. Lectures are slow and a waste of time, mostly have to self learn. Avoid class if you want to keep your GPA up or want to actually learn.
Not a horrible teacher, material was pretty straightforward but was extremely slow during lectures. My class was 3 hours long and sometimes we wouldn't even finish a full lesson. Seemed to be easily annoyed by students who didn't understand the material. Lots of homework, but she is lenient on due dates. I personally wouldn't recommend her.
Out of three exams excluding the final, I find it baffling that the first two exams had a class average of 62%. That is not normal as there is clearly something wrong with the way the prof teaches. On the third exam there was an average of 50%. Avoid taking this class if you want to fail. She does not curve and allow people to get a better grade.
This professor doesn't teach well; you'll end up relying on online resources to learn. Tests are way harder than the material covered, and there's too much homework. Avoid if you value your time and GPA.
Terrible teaching. The quizzes barely match the lectures, and you'll spend hours on homework. Professor is condescending and unhelpful. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Do yourself a favor and skip this professor. The tests are unfair, the homework is endless, and the lectures are pointless. You'll be teaching yourself everything.
Dr. Carter is the best math teacher I have had in years. Her lectures and notes made sense, and she answered students' questions with thorough explanations. The class is hard, but that is because it is calculus. If you don't have a good pre-calc basis, you will struggle, but Dr. Carter will support you if you reach out to her. I recommend her class
Wonderful, caring, and willing to go the extra mile to help you understand the material.
teacher cant teach pls dont take this class
She is not good at teaching and is very strict about grading.
This class had, in my opinion, a terrible learning environment. If you didn't get something right, you felt looked down upon or a bit humiliated. Tests weren't like the reviews. I dropped this class because I was almost always defeated afterward. I'm sure she can be nice, but I never saw it or felt it.
I honestly feel sorry for her. She seems so bitter and the only way she can express herself is to be outwardly unlikeable to others & makes us feel uncomfortable. Prof Carter fascinates me yet I don't like her as a person whatsoever. The woman can teach, I'll give her that. Good luck to future students!!
She goes out of her way to make sure you're uncomfortable. Maybe if she put that much effort of being insufferable into being an actual well rounded professor that taught well maybe her students would like her more 🤷. Don't ask her questions, she'll humiliate you and make you feel incompetent when the problem is her teaching and hostile demeanor.
Professor has got an incredibly terrible attitude towards her students which is really unprofessional. I personally felt hurt and wanted to cry multiple times because of how she treated me and made me feel bad for even asking a question. I would not reccomend this teacher to ANYONE!!! please. She is not good at teaching either and she's so rude.
The final was absurd. It was a support class, and all the previous exams were not too hard or stressful. But the final is ridiculous. I went home and cried, I had studied so hard. She is also rude- makes students feel bad for not understanding something/asking questions. She is a great professor, but she isn't very nice, and the final was agony.
Dr. Carter seems very irritated and upset most days. She gets upset with you if you ask a question and she does not help you learn the material. She is smart but very unapproachable. Her lectures are long and exhausting.
Absolutely terrible professor with tests that were so impossible. the class average on every single test was an F in my class. That means most people failed every one of her exams. SHE DOESNT CARE.. SHE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY AND DOESNT CURVE OR HELP HER STUDENTS. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR UNLESS YOU WANT TO RUIN YOUR GPA!!!
I really wouldn't recommend taking this professor's class.
pls look for another class and stay away from this one, for your own well-being. unless u rlly wanna test the waters then uhhhhhh sure but youre gonna drop it anyway so dont waste your time
just no. condescending teacher.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
doesn't teach and is condescending
Shes so bad I had to rethink my career. Incredibly stingy grader; Lose 20% on quizzes for the smallest error in notation despite CORRECT answer+work. Impossible to make up these points. Super condescending; Encourages questions but acts like a snob when you ask. Lectures sometimes don't even cover what is on the HW. HW barely helps with exams.
Only take this professor if you have no other choice, if not, then ignore this professor. Insanely condescending and such a sarcastic tone. If you like to talked down upon, then pick this professor because she will do so happily. The homework she gives out doesn't even correlate to the exams she gives out.
The reviews speak for themselves.
Just No 😭 You have to teach everything to yourself, there's no extra credit opportunities and lectures are unnecessarily long… if you're looking to do Statistics save yourself some time and don't take this course!!!
Shes a sweet teacher. Took the Zoom class with support I just hated how longgggg it was. U kinda have to participate she might ask u to answer a question every once in a while. Every class theres a worksheet but u always fill it out she gives u answers throughout the whole zoom. I believe there were 3 tests that u go in person for.
