I was a fun class. he was wonderful.
There is a ton of reading, but Jan is so awesome he makes it worth it!! What ever you do make sure you have read everything when it comes to exams and you will do fine. I loved the class and will would take it again in a second. My only complaint it watch out for the TA's
There is a TON of reading so be prepared to allow yourself a lot of time to study for his class. Having said that, he is a wondeful prof, both interesting and intelligent. Just watch out for those readings!
Like a bottle of wine, Jan Cioe just gets better with age! yummy
Really hard but so worth it! Great sense of humour and good teaching style! You Rock Jan!!!
Ya, awesome class. He is rad and likes to talk dirty, its hilarious. reading? Im talking prob. 10 psyc articles per exam that each have question sets, plus 4-5 chapters. if u can get it done, you will do well. just a class u have to put the time into, but worth it.
An absolutely amazing teacher with a hillarious sense of humor that is quite obscene most of the time. He's very engaging and has an excellent teaching manner; he makes sure his students understand what he teaches. Very important to do the readings for his class. His tests are fair but certainly not easy and involve a lot of writing.
This course was the most 'demanding' one I have ever taken, but Jan tried his best to get everyone through. Anybody doing stats for the first time is advised to bring lubricant to the exams...ouch! That said, Dr. Cioe Sir is engaging, fun and a true National Treasure!
Very Fair. Gives you more than you need to do well in the class. His classes are a lot of work but if you actually do something instead of slacking off you will do fine!
best prof i've ever had. truely cares about his students
It's easy to see that Jan worked really hard to design and implement this course- and the others too. He can answer any question you throw out there. He demands hard work, but the reward for pulling it off is that all other courses become easier by comparison
I had taken the requiered psyc class at a different university and withdrew with a 30%. (Not like I didn't try!) I work just as hard in this class and now I have an 87% I think that this teacher really cares about his students and he is not there to punish his students. This class is not so bad. Who can say that about stats?
Awesome prof. The course is a lot of work but it pays off in the end when you receive your wicked grade.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken: def two classes in one.. but, someone Jan made me want to try my hardest and not complain about the (ridiculous) amount of work that was assigned. He is very helpful and will meet with students outside of class. I am graduating this year, and Jan has definetely been my fav prof in all my 4 years.
For sexuality, good proff, fair marker and everything is posted on webct w/ lecture recordings. if you don't like to attend class, take his class. his lecture material greatly overlaps the text which is always nice. He is always available for help, and respectful. For stats 271- you cannot fail unless you are an idiot. he sets you up for success.
Came out with some of the most hilarious lines I have ever heard. Haha, wow. Go Jan.
haha i bet he's the one who gave himself chili peppers
Jan is extremely helpful and has a great sense of humor. He will do just about anything for his students if he thinks it will help-- he even gives you his home phone number. It is impossible to fail his stats course if you do ANY work, as he sets you up for success.
Great teacher!!! Very clear about what he's teaching, always willing to answer questions. Class is lots of work, as it is a requirement for major, but taught very throughly. Very funny, keeps class interesting and very fair in marking! A pleasure to have as a teacher! :)
SUCH a great prof, my favorite ever. He reminds me of why I am even at university. He is very clear and concise, and he is very helpful if you have questions, need clarifications or any kind of help. He uses the Vista site a lot and checks his email frequently. He posts all of his lecture notes and records his lectures as well. LOVE HIM!!!
after reading all of the previous comments and hearing from others, i was kinda disappointed. maybe it's cause the material is so dry, but i've had way better teachers. yeah, sometimes he is funny, but sometimes he comes off more as just rude. but whatev, somehow he still manages to get all of the teaching awards, so i dont get it!
Jan knows how to teach and does a really good job of it. The thing i like most is how he really cares about his students. He always gives step by step updates so you know exactly how well you're doing in the course. He also e-mails anything and everything that we might need to know, and he will rearrange his schedule to be able to meet with you.
Jan is funny and makes a good buddy, but isn't a very good prof. Has very high expectations and at first glance appears to do a lot of work, but upon closer inspection is a picky, lazy and grumpy old man. Don't be fooled by his charm!
Funny and charming, but not a very good prof. Cares more about details than concepts.
Made the class way more difficult than it had to be. Assigned an overwhelming amount of work, and made his TAs do all the marking. Thanks.
Definately one of the best profs I have ever had. Genuinely cares about the students and wants everyone to succeed. I also love his sense of humour!
He posts his lectures (audio and power point) on the internet, but go to class anyway, it is definatley worth it! His exams are not a breeze, as he wants to prove that a sexuality course is not just "common sense." His TA marks the papers, and he is very thorough, so study the APA manual as much as your research material!
Best UBC prof ~ funny as sin ~ sharper than a needle ; )
Awesome prof. Really knows how to keep your attention in class. Tons of fun! Definitely keeps the class interesting with funny innuendos and analogies. Definitely take classes with this guy!
There are some profs that clearly do not love to teach. Well they may be very knowledgeable they cannot effectively communicate ideas and concepts to students. Jan is both highly knowledgeable and effective as an instructor and teacher. His classes are never boring!
the best prof i have ever had. clearly loves the subject and knows it's boring for us so makes it fun, very witty guy. he makes everything very clear and as long as you go to lectures and read the books you will do well. easy if you study and very hard if you don't but a very enjoyable class
This prof is a great teacher and a very nice person. Lecture was interesting and extremely funny! I found his tests difficult, especially the short/long answer, although he marks fairly. There is a lot of material to learn for this class, and many quizzes, so you must do all readings. I recommend this prof/class to serious students only.
Really cool teacher. He knows his stuff. The short answers questions on his tests ranged from easy to difficult depending on how much they were worth (obviously). And he is open to dispute when it comes to the answers. Complaints about certain questions raised my test marks by 2% each time.
He is an awesome prof, he really knows his stuff and wants everybody to pass his class. He even recorded lectures and posted all the power points on WebCT, but u still need to go to class. He used the Iclicker and is an extremely fair marker, not to mention he makes his lectures fun and is a pretty funny guy.
By far the best prof I have ever had! He is extremely organized and you always know what to expect going into exams. If you put the work in (which isn't outrageously much), you are definitely rewarded. The best part about Jan is his teaching style, its engaging, and by far the crudest and most hilarious thing I have ever witnessed in academics!
Awesome prof!! Approachable, answers all questions...and then some.
I have taken Psyo 270, 271, 353, & 354 with this prof. He is amazing!!! ; ) He cares about his students, is available to meet to discuss questions, is really organized, knows his material really well. I highly recommend any class he teaches. Expect to do a lot of hw, attend all classes, the courses are challenging & fun. This is a great prof! ; )
Take anything taught by him. He's a legend.
Reading &/or lecture quizzes every class that might reoccur in MT or final. Finals and MTs aren't too bad. Assignments are pretty easy. Does everything he can to help you pass. Has the most office I've ever seen of a prof, and explains to you in more detail if needed on the side. Recommend taking his course.
Although the material was dry, he made it interesting! With tons of examples, great stories and very easy going attitude, he was my favorite teacher this year. Always jokes with students, gives candy for participation, and other little bonuses for other things. Clear, intelligent, fair and energetic.
Jan is hilarious; it's worth taking a class with him just to hear his jokes. Tests aren't super easy, but they're definitely fair, and he lays out clear expectations. I would recommend taking a class with him for sure!
He teaches boring statistics quite well, and makes it passable without trying super hard. Just get the work done. He could do with a little less feminist comments, and loose the dumb name tags, other then that he's all right. Its a required course so get used to him.
Makes sure that there are TA's available to help you pass. That is the good news. The bad news is that he cracks the same jokes over and over, will target people who contradict or question him in any way - and he has an anger problem. He screamed at our class rt before the mdterm. It was horrible. Very unprofessional! Time to retire.
Jan is an excellent professor. I took all classes available with him - although he doesn't make an easy class. People often seem to not like his methods of examination, but if you use everything he made available and study... you will do just fine. He's my prof of the year! Keep up the good work :).
My favorite professor by far! Extremely fair marker who sets his expectations very clearly, but not an easy A. Students can earn marks on participation in class, but he also posts lectures and webcasts online if you miss a class. You probably won't want to miss class though because he is very funny and very interesting! Take his course!
VERY helpful, VERY entertaining, VERY clear in his expectations. The best prof I've had in my three years at UBC-O, I would HIGHLY recommend him!!
Jan is absolutely hilarious. He knows the course material is super dry, so he adds his own personality into the course to get everyone pumped up for the material. Super helpful outside of class and is a professor everyone has to experience at least once. Can't wait to take his sexuality class next year (that's his specialization).
He is really easy to tune out during lectures, the only reason you have to go is for the clicker quizes...the textbooks are mandatory! Isn't the best proffessor, uses innapropriate comments and examples all the time...is not funny, very dry sense of humour.
Don't let his charisma fool you, he is in no way a good instructor. Being funny doesn't make you a good teacher. I signed up for a psychology class and got a psychologists version of biology. He focused extremely highly on assigned readings, which were barely touched on in class. Mandatory attendance, and at home quizzes.
Very boring, loves talking about himself.
Jan is awesome. Hilarious and pretty much obsessed with talking about sex, no biggie since he teaches human sexuality. Fair marker, ch. quizzes are pass-fair so get 3/5 and you get 100%, if u bomb the first exam or miss it he will have your second mark take over the first is you get 10% or higher, so fair and really wants his students to understand
Prof was good, but it was hard to listen to him sometime because he goes into so much detail on certain topics. He has made inappropriate comments on several occasions in class.
1) Attend class and take notes. There will be specific questions asked on the midterm and final 2) Read the textbook, m/c questions will be asked, the l/a will be composed from lecture and the readings 3) If you are a prude, don't take human sexuality..duh.. if you're not. HILARIOUS! Part II is better
One of UBC's finest. I wish the man could teach every course. He's simply brilliant.
Great lecturer, funny guy, and all around knows his stuff. Fair, but really really difficult exams. You'd better know every little thing or you're done for. I have never had to study so hard in my entire life.
Tries really hard to keep everyone engaged and explains material thoroughly. Quick to reply to emails and genuinely cares about his students doing well. Reading intensive course. make sure you read the textbook before class. Have to attend all lectures because of participation marks.
Mixed feelings, lectures are fun, and he is hilarious. But his tests are something else. & misleading. Read the readings!! & attend class for those clicker quizzes
Great class, material itself is really interesting. Expect to work for your grade though, not a memorize and regurgitate type of class. Wish there were more profs like Jan that encouraged open minded, critical thinking.
Great lecturer, funny guy. His Assignments are not difficult, but his exams are VERY difficult. Quick to reply to emails, and very helpful.
Jan sets his students up for success. Marks are based on attendance through clickers, homework and online quizzes. If you put in the effort and attend class, you will be rewarded. He truly cares about his students and makes classes entertaining despite the dry material
Best prof ever? Probably. Jan uploads power points, class summary, and audio copies of his lectures online. He goes over material slowly and gives tons of examples. This class is mandatory if you're a psych major and certainly not an easy class but Jan makes it as easy as it could be by providing so much help and such thorough and funny lectures.
Had such a negative experience with him last year. You would think that after taking 3 of his other classes, getting extra help and talking to him personally a student could pass. Nope. Also focuses way more on specific details than concepts. If you need this class take it from TRU-OL and save yourself the frustration and money. poor class
Really great lecturer, it was so easy to pay attention. He is mildly "inappropriate" at times but, as long as you're not a prude I'm sure you'll appreciate the humour (human sexuality course). Even though lots of people have this class as an elective, Jan makes you work for the grade. Lots of reading, but the course is also really interesting.
Jan is a boss. 'Nuff said. Dresses like a mobster. Extremely knowledgeable. Makes hilarious offside jokes and ludicrous stories. My kind of prof. I don't know if the people on here complaining are just arts students who've never had to use logic, but this class was a minimal work with a 90% deal for me. Just read the texts.
People seemed to struggle in this course. Likely because 90% are arts students. Although the title says Psychological Aspects of Sexuality, there is much more anatomy involved in this course. I found it fascinating, and easy to study for. Just read the textbook and go to class. All in all it takes a fair bit of reading, but he's worth it.
Hilarious man. I laughed through the entire course.... Tests were... new for me as they had a long essay aspect and it seemed unreasonable to expect an essay as well as a short answer and M.C on a midterm... Other then that his T.A's were wonderful and I'm still taking the second half.
The best professor I have ever encountered. I have taken both 270, 271, and both semesters of sexuality. He turns boring content into fascinating material (270-271), and is EXTREMELY helpful. If your willing to put in the effort, you will do great. He sincerely wants you to succeed, and makes every effort to encourage you to. You wont regret it
Lectures are a nice mix of material and anecdotes. He truly cares about his students and is a fair tester and grader. It is hard to fail, but also hard to do really well. This past semester was quite bio heavy. Girls have a huge advantage with chapters on the menstrual cycle and birth control...
Jan is my favourite professor at UBCO. Super blunt, hilarious, crude, to the point. Makes lectures interesting and encourages participation. A fair bit of reading, but interesting subject matter. I read through everything one time and got high 80s. Some are off-put by his sense of humour, I think that they are just uncomfortable in their own skin.
After 3 classes with Jan I can say that he designs his classes so that you know exactly what you need to do to get a really good mark. While I did need to put in a lot of effort (reading, attending lectures, re-reading) I always knew that the effort I put in was worthwhile.
There isn't enough space here to say enough good things about Jan. Your time at ubco was a waste if you haven't had one of his classes. Ive taken everyone and it is this prof who has made me realize what it means to want something and to work for it. He personally invests time and resources into having his students succeed. Best prof at ubco.
Jan is easily the best professor at UBCO. I recommend taking every class of his you possibly can. His classes aren't a GPA booster, but if you put the effort it you know it'll pay off. He's a great prof, fair and clear on what he expects from his students. He isn't afraid to put himself out there for the sake of his students' success.
Jan is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is hilarious and makes the material interesting to learn about. He sets out exactly what you need to know on the test. His tests are difficult, but if you study his lecture notes and the textbook, the tests reflect both of those. I highly recommend taking a class with him
Jan is straightforward about what is expected on tests, with that said, you are expected to know a lot. The material seems more overwhelming at first than it actually is. Material is naturally dry so lectures were boring (most of the time) as a consequence. Keep up with readings and ask for help to do well.
Lots of reading and material in this course. Jan definitely expects more from 3rd year students. You have to work for the grade, but it's not impossible to keep your average steady. I had really high hopes for this course and it was fairly interesting, but not quite as gripping as reviews led me to believe. It's worth taking because of the topic.
Jan is hilarious and helpful, but his tests are way too long and I found them challenging. This is not an easy course by any means. It requires TWO textbooks, which you often have 3/4 readings to do per week because of clicker questions. If you work hard, you will do well. Loves to ask "how many of these statements are true?" questions on tests :(
271 was easily one of the worst classes I have ever taken. The marking scheme was poorly set up, and a mandatory minimum of 80% on the quizzes was ridiculous. He tries to make it easier by mixing words in with numbers to explain it in 'plain English,' but unfortunately this just made the material more confusing. Do not take!!!
OK class. Clicker questions, online unit tests every few weeks that make up 18% of grade (they are not super easy tho!), Jan's lectures are so dry and he thinks he can explain math to students without writing the steps down - not beneficial. Tests are very fair. If you want to do well you need to work very, very hard and get help when you need it.
This class was super straight forward! If you do the unit tests, homework, and clickers the way he instructs (which is not difficult), that makes up a good portion of your grade! Jan is a great lecturer but his way of putting math into words isn't always easy to follow! Go get help when you need it and stay on top of your work!
Funny, engaging, and willing to help you out if you ask. He's very fair about how to weight everything, and always listens to suggestions on how to make the course better. His TAs mark for him though, and they look for VERY specific answers on tests. Honestly, just show up and pay attention. He's a great teacher and the course is a MUST take.
This class is extremely difficult, utilize the resources available (TA and tutor office hours, SL sessions, extra worksheets and practice unit tests posted) and stay on top of the homework and unit tests. The textbook is good at clarifying concepts but if you can't understand something GO SEE A TA. Don't skip lectures they cover a lot of content
Terrifying to approach, and a little confusing in his explanations, but he definitely knows what he's doing. It's a straightforward class, and you can really get ahead as long as you do the quizzes and homework, and make sure to attend class and do the readings. He's been teaching for so long that his explanations make sense only to him, so ASK.
Jan does not produce a welcoming learning environment. I find he is condescending and unapproachable. He will commonly walk around the room and pick on people to answer questions when many of the students are not comfortable with being singled out in a large class. He assigns too many assignments, including homework, unit tests and clicker quizes.
very hard. i died.
One of the worst teachers to step foot in a classroom. It seems like he wants his students to struggle and fail. He puts questions on the exam that he states "the majority of students won't get right." Why not cover the class material then so students have a chance of understanding the questions? He also loves to brag about himself unrelentlessly!
I never write reviews for professors but Jan really deserves to be recognized. I have had him for PSYC353, PSYC354, and PSYC271. Dont get me wrong he makes you work for your grade and put time in but he is absolutely phenomenal. His sexuality classes were by far my favourite of my undergrad and the man knows how to teach. I really respect him
Discusses the amount of students who get things wrong in a bragging manor. States he does not care how students feel or do because he is already rich, with a nice car and home etc... Is not approachable and VERY condescending. I need this course for credit, and dreaded it every single day.
Jan is by far my favourite professor. He wants people to learn and although he doesnt make the work easy, he makes the subject super fun and interesting. His class made me work hard and really enjoy the subject. I would recommend this class 1000%.
At the beginning of the year, I was intimidated by Professor Cioe. However, I found him to be very caring when I had to miss class due to a family emergency. The course work is hard and there is lots of homework, however help is available. With the switch to online class due to the corona virus, he has been extremely accommodating.
Jan is an incredible prof. I didn't think I was good at math until this class. He gives you a lot of opportunity to succeed in his class. He uses mastery learning for his unit tests, clickers, homework (marked for completion), and 1 midterm and 1 final. There is a lot of help available w/ volunteer tutors, TAs, etc. You will survive.
By far one of the best professors. The content of the course is very challenging but Jan sets everyone up to succeed. He gives you every resource needed to pass his exams. He tells you exactly what kind of questions will be on the test and makes it very clear how to prepare for his exams. He is also hilarious and his lectures are interesting.
Honestly, I went into this class really scared but Dr. Cioe is a really good prof. Clear and concise, caring, helpful, and funny! I always believed I was bad at math but this class turned that around. His mastery tests are intimidating at first but you get 3 tries so if you take the time to read the material and put the effort in you're fine!
He kinda just yells math at you and hopes you get it. Not bad but not great.
Awful professor, lectures were decent but tests were ridiculously hard and very limited on time especially the final. He overcomplicates things and makes things way harder than they have to be.
Actually cares about his students success. He gives lots of opportunities to learn the material and the courses grade is broken up to help you succeed.
If you want to spend countless hours learning about something that will not be tested, but instead be tested on something in an obscure corner of the textbook, this is the class for you! Jan will expect you to devote your entire life to his course, and if you aren't ready to sell him ALL of your free time, do not take his courses.
He's pretty much the worst prof I've ever had. He has extremely high expectations and assigns so many unnecessary things. He acts like his class is more important than any other class and if you email him about concerns he pretty much just says its your fault. Super frustrating that he has so much power in psych department because he abuses it.
If I could rate him a zero I would. He makes a lot of uncomfortable and sexist remarks during lectures. Tests do not align with lecture material whatsoever, he tests on random stuff that he doesnt even touch on in class. No way this guy should be in charge of the psych department at ubco. Do not take his classes.
Jan gets a lot of flak but I think he's great. He is always accessible outside class and really cares about students. If you're sensitive don't take his class (he's really not as offensive as people make him out to be, his humour is just dry). His online class is open-book exams that include both textbook and lecture so do the workgood grade.
He gives a ton of homework that led to very little time to actually study. It feels as though he expects you to dedicate your entire semester to his class. Lectures were pointless to listen to as he barely tested on any of the material he covered in class. Would not recommend this class to anyone.
Way too many assignments and readings are convoluted and have too much unnecessary information
In order to enjoy his classes, you need to go in with a neutral opinion of him. You cannot expect to love him. He is a tough grader, and assigned a ridiculous number of assignments for online classes (14 assignments/quizzes/discussion posts in a week + lectures). He is quite unhelpful when you have questions about the material as well.
I wouldn't recommend taking him for an online course. There were way too many assignments/ discussions/ quizzes weekly too keep track of, and he was very unforgiving. His exams were not very fair in my opinion. His lectures and quizzes were full of grammatical errors and it seemed like he did not put the effort to make an enjoyable online class.
If you are sensitive, Jan is not for you. While he is assignment and reading heavy, it forces you to learn the material and it pays off. I loved taking his class I found the material fascinating and his office hours were always something to look forward to every week. The class was hard and he is tough, but if you work hard you'll be fine.
This course is not for the weak. The material is super interesting and changed my ideas on things however, you work hard and the grading criteria doesn't reflect that. Don't let the open book exam fool you. Super tricky and long. You can't waste time. I'd take his class again but be better prepared mentally and schedule my timetable better for it.
I was very intimidated for this class, as I have never excelled in math. However, Jan gives plenty of support for his students and genuinely want you to do well. The content and how he set up the class was challenging, but take advantage of TA's, tutoring, and SL sessions and you'll be FINE. Never worked so hard for a grade in my life.
Took PSYO 353 + 354 online. Jan is awesome. Course is content heavy and there are many papers to read, which are difficult, but at the 3rd year that is expected and good practice for reading primary sources. TAs are hard markers for essay question but provide excellent examples of required level of detail. Jan is funny. Course very well organized
This is the worst prof I have ever had. He doesn't teach. His slides don't even make sense which makes it impossible to study for any of his tests. He requires you get an 80% or higher on unit tests otherwise you fail, which is complete crap in my opinion, And on top of that he has way too many assignments that are completely unrealistic to finish.
A lot of people are complaining about him, and about the workload but I really like him. I spend maybe 7-8 hours per week on his class and I'm doing well. He makes it obvious that he's willing to listen to students and anyone expecting this class to be super easy is kinda naive because it's a requirement so it has to be a little harder.
he is extremely condescending to his students and makes you feel incapable (especially if you ask a question that HE thinks is too dumb), his workload is insane and he expects you to achieve a 'mastery' level of 80% on all quizzes (which is near impossible with his poorly 'organized' structure) he make jokes in lectures to 'help lighten the mood'
He is by far the worst professor I've ever had in 4 years at university. His tests are open book but the midterm covered 225 lecture slides, 80 pages or articles, and 140 pages from the text book. The questions on the test have very little to do with the core concepts of the course. The final is cumulative so think of that X3. complete joke
271 was hard for me, but going to office hours frequently makes a huge difference.
Jan is a gem, so funny and reasonable. Class is content-heavy but manageable, and interesting to learn. You're expected to do the same thing every week (readings, lectures, articles) and every test over both courses is the exact same format so there are no surprises. Also easy to get ahead if you ever need since everything's posted well in advance.
Stats is difficult, but Dr. Cioe gave lots of opportunities to increase your grade (through assignments, etc.) Class was challenging, but marking was very fair! Lots of assignments, but it was helpful because it gave lots of practice. The class was definitely was not as hard as I expected.
Suggestion: If you have taken up a lot of courses for the semester, think twice before taking up this one as well. Professor Cioe makes you work hard for those grades, and you will have to spend roughly 8-9 hours doing homework and quizzes every week (that is if you want to get good grades).
Honestly Jan is probably one of the worst professor Ive had to date in my 3 years at university. He intentionally makes students feel small and stupid. The way he speaks to us is vulgar and unnecessarily rude. He uses his authority to intimidate students. The course itself is not too bad, but be prepared to teach yourself if you want to do well.
Jan will either really like you and be super friendly, funny and supportive, or really hate you and be unnecessarily rude and unhelpful. Not sure how he decides, but if he dislikes you just don't bother contacting him.
Be ready to work hard for a good grade in 271. Going to see Jan helps a ton - he gives lots of resources and will give his time to help you out. I always found him funny, kind & respectful
Definitely a hard prof and course but he definitely cares about his students and work.
His tests are ridiculous, the lecture material is barely covered in the midterm and most of the focus is on textbook readings . You have to dedicate so much time to study for lecture + text material and articles, only for a small fraction of it to show up on the midterm. I did not enjoy studying for this class at all, felt like a huge waste of time
Jan is super funny and I really enjoyed his lectures. The class is really interesting and part 2 is even better. Theres alot of little assignments and the articles are a long read but as long as you attend and do the readings youll do great. The class needs a little updating but overall I loved it and cant wait for part 2.
Professor demeanor, organization, structure, content, variety and marks were well dispersed. At first it seems like a lot but the best way to learn something is a variety of ways and the weekly tasks are manageable and worth it. Similar to a flipped classroom style. Highly recommend.
Assigned too many readings starting with the textbook and articles. You also need to know what he writes on his lectures which don't really make a lot of sense because he skips words. He does not believe in giving 100% on the essays/tests. The course was generous in the fact that clickers were worth quite a bit.
I highly recommended! He is a very caring and understanding prof, and sets up the material very well. So far his class has been my favorite, although very difficult. The tests were the most challenging ones I have experienced so far. But he gives lots of marks for simple quizzes/textbook assignments. so although hard, definitely worth it.
This prof is arguably the worst professor at ubco, he doesnt care about anyone, and enjoys giving out an absurd amount of readings, quizzes and homework. If you dont want your GPA to drop, dont take this dude!
Jan can be abrasive at times and has very little patience when students don't pay attention to his instructions. The class was very challenging and there's a lot of material to cover, but the grading scheme makes it possible to achieve a very high mark if you put the time in. Ask the TAs for help early if you get stuck and schedule out EVERYTHING.
He makes a mandatory class way harder than it needs to be with everything he assigns and despite being a psychology professor is uncaring about mental health and is very difficult to approach
Well ... this course was VERY rough. Despite taking five courses, I spent the MOST time studying/doing homework for this class. As much as I disliked the homework though, it did help me. Do the QUIZZES and the READINGS because it WILL be on the midterm and final! Anyways, I liked Jan; he has a great sense of humour and is honest with you.
At least 4+ things weekly some at "mastery" (80% or fail), midterms/exams are LONG and in depth, don't waste time. Made so many errors (30+) during the semester. Most unprofessional prof I've had in my degree, constantly singling out students and making "jokes" that are usually just offensive. Take this with another prof save yourself the grief.
This is a tough class but Jan gives plenty of opportunities to learn the material to the best of your ability. You have multiple tries on unit tests and must achieve 80% to move on. Although this can be frustrating, I really think this saved me for the final exam. He is really accessible outside of class.
Jan is very engaging in his lectures and makes them far from boring. For 353 we had to read an online text with in text quizzes, articles with article quizzes, iClicker quizzes, a 30% midterm, and a 45% final. If you attend lectures and read the text thoroughly you will do okay. Definitely not the easiest course but very interesting and worthwhile.
Jan makes lectures enjoyable with his humour. The midterm had two essay questions and the final had three. He has high expectations about the amount of work he expects of you. A lot of articles to read and memorize. The high amount of readings took away from the course content. Stressful and hard course, but very interesting topics were discussed.
Jan is great! He makes class so enjoyable, but be ready to do readings and attend class in order to get a good grade.
Jan is amazing. Although he's got pretty mixed reviews, he is a hilarious prof who really cares about his students. He is very engaging in lectures and is very open. Although he provides a lot of readings, they are pretty interesting and they ensure you understand the material which only benefits you. Will be taking another class for sure!
He is hilarious and delivers the material in a way that is easy to understand. He is exciting and captivating to listen to, but he has high expectations of you. Prepare to put work in for the grade you want, it is worth it!
This is absolutely one of those classes/professors that can and will change your outlook on life, especially if you come from a religious family with super restrictive sex values, I just wish there was more than 2 parts to this class
I enjoyed both of his courses in human sexuality. Readings from textbooks and articles are required but they are all intriguing. The assignments may seem to never end but it's all for your benefit as his student and preparing you for the exam. Professor Cioe truly wants his students to exceed and this class is worth your time and effort.
if Jan has zero fans then I am no longer alive. Course is information-heavy but extremely interesting and important. He's a great lecturer and he's hilarious. Tests are hard but manageable.
I enjoyed his class. He provided extensions, removed our worst quiz grade & curved exams. However, this isn't an easy class and to do well you need to go the extra mile (office hours, SL sessions, optional assignments). Also, don't be scared by the 80% or fail unit tests, you get multiple tries (plus a practice test), & the questions often repeat.
This is a VERY challenging class with a heavy workload. Jan rewards effort, is lenient in his grading and offers extensions. He has high standards but is extremely explicit about what he is looking for. There is immense support offered to achieve his high standards. All lectures are funny, engaging and entertaining. Apply yourself & you will pass.
Jan has high standards but they're meant to help you at the end of the day. I truly think that he provides you with the best and most comprehensive intro to data analysis if you plan on going to grad school. His exams were difficult but fair. Make sure you do your best on the stuff outside of the exams as you get 60% of your grade from it.
Possibly the most condescending and entitled person I have ever met. Don't bother trying to ask a question or converse with him, he is incapable of listening. I watched him belittle a female student to the point she had to leave the room. Does not represent the UBCO psych department well, most of whom are awesome teachers and great people.
If you're really into the math side of psych, congrats! You'll probably love this course. If not, you will have to spend hours upon hours completing the 50+ questions assigned for homework every week, the 1-2 reading quizzes every week, and the 1-2 labs every week. The midterm was fine. The final was not. That's all.
Professor Jan has high standards, but the workload helps prepare you for grad school. Engage with the course materials, use resources like Unstuckstudy, and you'll learn a lot despite the difficulty.
Great prof who is absolutely hilarious and at times rather sassy. He clearly cares about his students and is very passsionate about what he teaches.
May seem condescending and rude to some, but genuine and caring when you accept that. Very good at teaching, but there is a lot of work.
I've taken stats and human sexuality with Jan and went from fearing to revering him! He is blunt but hilarious. His passion for psychology is immense but it's nothing compared to his passion for educating the next generation of psychologists. You'll learn a LOT; you'll be overwhelmed initially but come out much wiser if you just put in the effort.
I had Dr. Cioe for PSYO 270 and 271 and swore I'd never take his class again because it was so challenging. But his jokes and engaging lectures tricked me into taking PSYO 353. Don't be fooled—his stories are funny, but writing 3 essays for the final will have you crying. Still, he's perfect for this course, and I do recommend taking it!
I was disappointed with this course. The content is interesting but the way Dr. Cioe presents it is boring. The slides are text heavy and he basically just reads them word for word in class. I didn't appreciate the way he yelled at students, it felt like he had very little respect for us. This course could be great if someone else was teaching it.
By far, one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Jan's lectures are incredible, and he is so knowledgeable about the topics he teaches. Be prepared to read and his tests are NOT easy, but his expectations are very clear when you attend the lectures. Attendance matters as does extensive studying.
In my 4th year and Jan is the best prof I've ever had. He is full of dark/dirty humour, so beware if that's a trigger. His lectures were amazing, and yes, his exams are very difficult. Final exam was PAINFUL but I am a much better exam writer since taking his class. However, are 3 essay questions & 55 multiple choice q's really necessary Jan??
Had Jan for 271 and again for 353. He's an engaging lecturer and an honest prof. He sets clear expectations. Jan has witty humour that may not go over well with everyone but as a prof he's organized, efficient and understanding. He won't baby you but you can tell he genuinely cares about his job and students. PSYO 353 with Jan was 10/10
If you have sarcastic, dark humor - you will like Jan. He is super blunt but honestly just gets to the point. He is quite funny and I also think a good teacher. He is willing to help and makes himself decently accessible. He teaches exactly what is on the midterm & exam, just make sure you look over his review material he creates!
He's passionate about what he teaches. Attendance matters because we had clicker questions to answer in class that could bump up your final grade. For sure though, he put so much effort into getting excerpts from different textbooks to save our pockets from buying an expensive one. His lectures are so engaging and he explains concepts so clearly.
Dr. Cioe is definitely one of my favourite professors. His lectures are very engaging, he is witty and you can tell he actually cares about his students. His exams are a little tough but if you go to all the classes/ do all the homework/readings its very manageable. 10/10 would recommend.
Difficult professor, but cares about his students. Can be a little disarming in lectures, but it is fairly engaging. Classes are well worth taking!
Best bank for your buck at the uni! Actually teaches the content and engages within the lecture. Need a good sense of humour to take the class, but you won't regret it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Dr. Cioe is an engaging professor who is very knowledgeable and fair. His exams are hard, but if you attend class, do the assigned readings, and take advantage of the example exams, you will succeed in this course. The final exam was worth more than 50% of the final grade.
