Took both ASTR 154L and ASTR 312 for GEs. Some might say he's boring, but he definitely knows his stuff and will answer any question. Accent is not too hard to understand; I get the impression he's simply converting his thoughts into English at points.

he just repeats himself over and over and over and is like a robot and will use all amounts of class time every time. never get the feeling he's done with a subject even though we move on. really really boring.

This class was soooo boring but easy. Sitting in the planetarium for 50 minutes was hell. He just talks and talks. He seems like a good person and answers any questions. Good grading too...I failed two tests and got a C in the class...no attendance tak

This class was very boring but extremely easy. He grades on a very generous curve. I should have failed all my tests percentage wise, but his curve gave me B's on all of them. Plus, he is smart and will answer all questions.

easy class, but very very boring. The fact that this guy is so monotone and robot like is almost guaranteed that you will fall asleep in that class, but none the less and nice guy and an good teacher minus the monotone robot deal.

he just talks and talks and talks and never seems to run out of transperincies. sometimes he even continues to lecture when class time is up. if you can stay awake to be able to take the notes, the class is easy due to his curve.

Ok, I never went to class. I saw how much he sounded like the terminator and figured i wouldn't learn much deciphering an austrian accent. all i did was check the material online and crammed the night before. to my surprise, i got an A. he's that easy

Very boring and talks like Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory. Always says "In such a vey (way)", alot. But his work isnt hard if you have an attention span good enough to pay attention to the important stuff.

He's easy, fine, but he has not an ounce of interest in that voice of his. If you want a ditchable class, fine. If you're going to show up to class, prepare to get some WONDERFUL sleep because you have no way around it. I hated him more than any teacher I've had to date.

Very easy, clear teacher. Explains material well. Tests are easy and gives extra credit quizzes. Overall, a very good astronomy teacher and easy A if you go to class, take notes and study the notes for the test. Don't really need to read the book.

good class. if you show up, take notes, and study you will get an A. no homework; all he asks is that you read. he grades on a massive curve, something like a 40/70 is a B on one of his test. if your an average or above average student, i highly recommend you take this course.

Very boring and long. His voice is very monotone and everyone usually falls asleep during every class. Don't even bother going to class, he just confuses you more. Just memorize the book and do your own research online. He grades on a massive curve and never takes role.

seemingly easy class, but his tests are really tricky. there is so much information, and he asks at random. and he words his questions really hard. there is about 30-35 pts of extra credit though. i wouldnt take him again. it's also REALLY hard to stay awake in class.

Very boring. Takes material that should be interesting and ruins it. Tests are only remotely based on either lecture or book, but he does apply a decent curve. Often hard to stay awake. Lots of opportunity for E.C., and you need it because there are only 3 tests and one paper. Very Hard to get an A, not so tough to get a B.

Not a fun class, and really not that easy. I thought this would be a fun subject, but the way he teaches it... sucks. No homework, just tests - but he's foreign and he words stuff weirdly, so it's confusing, and the tests are hard. You can study a lot and still not do well. Plus, it is really boring. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.

This teacher was boring and hard to understand. Halfway through I stopped going to class and just read the book on my own. I started getting A's on my tests after that instead of B's and C's. He doesn't take role so just ditch class and do the reading on your own then show up for the tests (there are 3 and 3 quizzes)

While I thought astronomy to be an interesting subject that could result in a great class, Jan Dobias ruined it for me. When I wasn't laughing at his horrendously thick German accent, I was sleeping.

We pay too much money for an education to be educated by this man! It's almost suicide to take his class. If you like reading the text book and not attend class unless there's an exam, this is the class for you. Bring a feather to tickle him, you will not receive a reaction from him. He is a robot! Just take an online class.

the guy is so boring! just like his astonomy class, attending lecture is pointless. in his class, there are such things as stupid questions. and that's exactly how he answers them. but i'd have to say, he does allow cheat sheets on exams.

The only complaint I have is that the seats are way too comfy and the lights are too dimmed. Other than that, I enjoy the class. Its interesting, and hell I could care less about stars...but I do learn! Prof. Dobias domonstrates a lot of patience and he completes his job. Go Dobias! (just don;t take the class too early)

Dobias is really a nice guy. Lots of people think he's a jerk or whatnot but he really isn't. However he is not the greatest professor in the world, some of his lecture notes and the text book material don't even match which made it harder for studying. I say if you're going to take the class...take it after 10 in the morning

I was a bit disappointed as the title of the class was "Current Developments in Astronomy" but it's just a Solar System Astronomy class. He does have a thick accent, his lectures can get boring, and his tests can get hard, but he offers a ton of extra credit for going to those Friday night shows and curves like crazy. There's also a 10-page paper.

thick accent. his lecture notes dont have anything to do with his tests (that are already hard) but hey the seats are comfy and its a great place to take a nap so bring a pillow. he does give u chances for extra credit but dont count on that too much.

PEOPLE, WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE DOBIAS! I REPEAT, SAY NO TODOBIAS! I'm a 4th year student, and I have a 3.8 cummulative GPA. I would like to think that I'm an A student. However, when I took Dobias my 1st year, 3 years ago, that was my first C ever in any level of education. Hard to understand bc of accent, very unclear man,test ?'s very random

I was interested in taking astronomy until I took Dobias. He is BORING!!! Has a monotonous voice & since class was in the planetarium with cushion seats & dark lighting...HAD A DIFFICULT TIME STAYING AWAKE!! His tests are really RANDOM. I never figured out how to study for his tests. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although a bit boring, this class is very easy. He's a bit boring and does have an accent, but he knows what he is talking about and explains everything well. The quizzes can only help your grade, and the tests are very easy as well. I hardly studied and easily got an A in the class.

I don't know why everyone thinks this class sucks so much. It's super easy if you attend the lecture why read the boring book when he pulls out all of the important info for you?! Duh the people below me are just lame! I'm a freshman and I thought that this class was super easy and Prof. Dobias actually cares about the student's! I recommend it!

I hated every minute of this class. I went everyday, and i just got more and more confused. I would read the notes over and read the book and I still wouldnt do good on the tests. He has a thick accent. He gives out extra credit but you can only do two and they are on friday nights. He has quizes that help. But the test are hard. I would not recomm

His tests are HARD!! I took him in Spring Fall 07 for astr 352. You need to know every # and little word to pass his exams, I studied hard and got a "D" in the class, i did his paper too, overall, his tests are very unfair. As for as understand his lecture, i understood his accent fine, he just doesnt teach properly, they seemed like book tests!!

This class is tough, but this is because I didn't have any interest in the subject. Hard to stay awake due to the comfy chairs and the material he presents. Grade is based on 3 tests and 3 quizzes. Go to class, take notes, and study them. Test is mostly based off notes. The curve is what saved my grade. Got a B in class.

Dobias is an excellent teacher! I have no idea why people say he is not, maybe because they are just getting used to college level lecture halls. I'm the usual lazy student who would rather take the easy way out. All I did was show up to class, pay attention, and studied hard 1 night before. I received an A. Very easy and recommended.

He puts effort in his lecture, but his tests are found nowhere. Trust me, you will study very hard and to get D or C. He doesn't really care about students. I think he is trying to prove that he is smarter than students. I am sure he can't grade his exams without searching for the answers on Google :). good luck if you have to take him.

He is so cute! Yet so boring. Poor Jan, all he wants to do is share his passion of astronomy with the rest of the world, and students fail :( I did well in his class by showing up to class, reading the book, and studying the night before.

He is the SWEETEST little man! And very passionate about what he teaches, LOVED him, but his class was extremely difficult. There is no homework and the tests count for like 90% of your grade. Sounds nice, except the tests are impossible to pass. Study hard and take notes in class!

Too much entertainment in your life? Take a class with Dr. Dobias. The definition of boring. You better be really familiar with the book, because you won't learn much from lecture and you won't pass the class otherwise. Homework on Mastering Physics is tedious and annoying.

took him at college of the canyons, but is entire lecture is powerpoint. no need to buy the book because he explains everything in his notes. he is willing to work with you if you missed tests and such but you need to study averything he says otherwise you will not pass this class. if your a good note taker, your good, but if not, stay away.

I took this class being interested in the subject. Horrible class there is no student to teacher interaction. Just him lecturing. He doesn't care whether you pay attention or fall asleep. He is monotone so its hard to stay up. You do learn in the class but its hard to enjoy it. You can take pictures of the lecture or record it just let him know.

Avoid, if possible. Unfortunately, this guy is practically the astronomy department so if you like to take astronomy (or physics) odds are you'll run past this man. VERY boring. Tests are extremely difficult and quizzes are somewhat unfair, but fair. Tests are curved so much that F's become B's and C's...so the class itself is pretty easy.

To start with, he is nice. But his lectures are just regurgitations of the PP slides. He is also very unwilling to do calculations during lecture. Formulas are given during the tests and there are 8-12 homework problems due each week. Definitely take him if you are familiar with physics and can learn well from the book. I highly recommend the book.

Lecture seems long if you take him after lunch. Just bring a camera and take pics of his PP slides. Nice study guide. So long as you show up and read you should pass. 3 tests, 1 paper, 3 chances of extra credit, curves tests. He does have an accent and tends to jump topics due to current events, but otherwise it is a great class.

One lab a week, one makeup lab, one lab that you take home, one take-home test that is worth double points, super easy. Takes your top 11 labs out of the 11 reg labs, 1 makeup, and 2x test. He does lecture the first 30 to 60 min of class on how to do it, just remember to print it out the lab and bring it to class, he wont have them for you.

Took his class online. You pretty much have to do things on your own. No lecture slides, videos or reading discussions provided. Every week there was an assignment & quiz due (about 11). Never emailed back, or answered questions in the forum. You're on your own with the readings. I still got an A, thanks to a study group.

Very intelligent man who knows a lot about astronomy.Unfortunately, knows nothing about teaching and how to keep a modern day college student's attention. Something about his monotone-accented tone of voice that puts you to sleep (Literally). No excitement about the subject and Lectures straight from the PP.

Do not recommend him unless you already know astronomy in detail from the death of stars to the hr diagram. He does not care about his students or passing anyone. He has three exams through out the semester that are hard and very hard to study for. You don't need to show up to class. Read the book (it's more helpful) and then show up for exams.

Just take pics of the power pts. and write down the stuff and you will do fine. I never used my book. Honestly wouldn't bother getting it. I got a B in the class

Astronomy a topic about space, stars, nebulae, planets, black holes, galaxies. Taught by the most boring man in the world with a thick german accent. Lectures straight from PP, very monotone, can be rude and often mocks students. Dont bother going to class just read the book. No HW, 3 multiple choice exams, and 1 4pg dbl space essay. Avoid him

He is extremely boring and monotone. He even has a thick accent that you can barely understand. He literally lectures for the whole 75 minutes without stopping. So boring and the quizzes and tests are hard. No study guide or preparation. All I did was take pictures of the power points and never showed up to class because of how pointless it was.

If you go to class and keep yourself engaged, you will pass (I got an A). Take notes! and focus on the powerpoint. His accent wasn't bad, I think it was actually fitting to the astronomy class, if that makes sense. The notes serve as your study guide. He gives out a list of things to know for the tests, which is also VERY useful.

Lectures are extremely boring and long winded as there is no interaction. Tests and writings are easy peasy though. I actually enjoy his accent. It is not difficult to understand. If you need the class, take this guy. He knows his stuff. He honestly seems bored though. Attend his extra credit sky shows! guarantee yourself a good grade! Good luck!:)

Do not take! lectures are long and boring. He doesn't even sum up the book. Your grade is based off of 3 tests. 3 difficult tests. He curves the grade but the class average is still a C. Tests are very details and complex. If you want to learn the material by yourself then take him.

Only take this class if you are interested in astr because he is a little monotone. However, he is VERY knowledgeable and provides 3 extra credit quizzes (up to 10 pts ea) and then 3 tests about 70-80q. you can also attend 3 sky shows for 5 ec pts each. I found the class & sky shows very interesting ! I got an A and am now taking ASTR 352!

Tests are really really hard and incredibly specific. The class itself is soooo boring. 75 minutes of him non stop talking. I would avoid him if possible, the tests are so hard. If astro isnt your passion look elsewhere, certainly dont take for a GE.

Took this class online, pretty easy. tests are a little harder though. She sends reminder emails which is pretty cool! it helped out a lot. I recommend it!

SP15(MW9:30-10:45) Great Professor!! He lectures from PP that you will not have access to unless you attend class. Take note of every slide; exam and quiz questions derive from PP information. Review notes! 2 Exams and the Final sum up your grade. Offers 3 quizzes and Sky Show for extra credit which I definitely recommend to help your grade.

The lectures are extremely long and he makes them so uninteresting. Would not recommend or take the class again. You have to attend the class to pass it because he does not post nothing in moodle. I notice how sometimes he puts students on the spot which I dislike very much because he suppose to help us not make students feel stupid.

Worst professor I ever had. He is awful at responding to emails. His ebook was a waste of money. Nothing for the assignments or the quiz were talked about in the reading. He gives one assignment every Thursday and a quiz every Friday. The final is online. The quizzes are timed... 20 mins each. I would not take this professor again!!

There is a lab a week which is the norm but he barely goes into detail over the lab. He will not help any students unless you ask for it. Everyone is basically on their own when it comes to doing assignments. There are no exams or quizzes. The only exam is the final. Its mostly self teach & everyone helping each other. Drops one lab.

First of all, his accent is NOT at all bad! He is easy to understand. There are 3 exams, 3 (extra credit) quizzes and 1 more extra credit. You need to attend class because all exams are based on lectures; do not waste money on the book. I usually just took pictures of the slides in class and studies them during the exam. have to study but curves!!

He goes over the slides during lecture and the exams are theoretical word problems. The homework is on MasteringPhysics, but it does not help too much with the exam. It should not be too hard to pass if you do the homework and get the average grade because he does curve.

This class was relatively difficult, but if you put in the effort, you'll definitely pass. His lectures take the entire period, but in all honesty, you just have to write notes from the powerpoint because that's all the info that will be on the tests. Final is not cumulative. His accent is actually VERY EASY to understand, you just have to listen!

I took this class for my upper division GE requirement - lecture & lab. The subject matter was very interesting and there was very little math if any during the lab and zero on the tests which was great for me. Tests are difficult but all the information is there if you study diligently. Attendance mandatory for the lab portion - not for lecture.

Monotone, boring professor. Sounds like Stephen Hawking's text to speech machine, that boring. Teaches straight out of the powerpoints. Take pictures of power points as he does not even put them up on the site after he is done and you need them to study as well as reading the book.

Lectures consists of a slideshow. Take notes because everything on the exams and quizzes are mostly from there. Class can be a little boring if the material does not interest you. Accent is not that thick, you can still understand him. Quizzes are extra credit. Grading consists of only exams. Try not to be absent a lot.

I was looking forward to taking Astronomy class but this professor is so boring. You don't need to show up in class, and it's not worth your time. If you're registered for this class, drop out immediately, you will not pass this class. Exams and quizzes are so HARD His voice is monotone, does not engage with his students, horrible teaching skills.

The king of monotone. Lectures are long and boring because he doesn't show any emotion towards the subject. If you get the 9:30 am class get ready to sleep because the chairs decline and you just can't help but to sleep. Make sure you read the notes and ebook and you should be fine. He doesn't put the lecture PP on moodle so take notes.

Very monotone and boring to listen to sometimes, must show up to class to copy slide show notes. Don't really need book i never used it. I studied about 1 hour before exam and got an A in the class. He curves and gives extra credit opportunity. One paper due at the end of semester. If you try just a little you will get the A.

I took his class online and basically failed everything in the beginning but later on got the gist of it and started passing every assignment self discipline is required. I would definitely recommend the class, I honestly thought I was not going to pass but certainly did.

He allows one side of a paper for a cheat sheet. For this professor prepare to do a lot of studying outside of class. His writing is not the best but it takes time to understand it. His exams are multiple choice and short answer response.

Professor Dobias is a cool dude. He is very monotone and his lectures can be boring. But try to learn!! His tests consist of multiple choice and FRQs. the multiple choice are concept based questions from the lecture. If you can apply the principles from lecture and work out the FRQs you WILL pass effortlessly. TAKE NOTES every class!!!!

He is a good guy but his lectures are very monotone. You can see he tries hard to make it fun and exciting. It can be hard to follow sometimes but if you so the hw, do the extra credit and study for the tests you will do fine. Make sure to take notes during class. Loved this class.

His lectures are very boring but no homework and showing up to class is not necessary as he posts study guides and samples for quizzes and exams online, and as long as you study really hard you will pass. The 3 quizzes given are optional but if you score a 5 or higher they are extra credit. Also offers other extra credit opportunities.

The topics discussed in class were fascinating but Prof Dobias's lectures are pretty dry. He knows his stuff, though. He thoroughly explains every slide. Take good notes since all 3 tests are based on the slides. Didn't use the textbook. Probably a good idea to have some prior astronomy knowledge before taking the class.

He's aight. Dry lectures(mostly, the material is pretty neat if you care at all about space and stars and things like that). Gives extra credit if you go to planetarium shows. Doesn't post his slides so just take pictures. Study the slides hard and you can ace all his tests.

Knowledgeable but boring and monotonous. Takes the fun out of Astro. Lectures from PowerPoint but doesnt post online so come everyday and take notes. Study the notes (dont really need textbook) and youll pass easily. Three tests and one paper. Plus extra credit for attending planetarium shows on campus. Easy but would not take again.

To pass take a picture of the lecture slides and take his extra credit quizzes. The quizzes are the curve. He curves his tests a lot because people don't look over their notes before coming to class. If you study for an hour or two, you should be set. The only negative is that you have to buy the useless textbook in order to access study guides.

Overall a very mediocre teacher. He has a very monotone voice and the dark reclinable seats in his class make about 80% of the people fall asleep. His tests are usually 30% book and 70% lecture. Show up, but know you can afford to skip if you wanted. He's nice, he makes his textbook 15 dollars, but it is littered with SIMPLE mistakes.

Pretty difficult class, but not undoable. Make sure you show up to hear the lectures. He has an accent and monotoned voice. I've never fallen asleep in a class before, but by god, I took some of the best naps of my life in that class.

The only knock I had on this class was that the textbook didnt cover some of the material for the online assignments and quizzes. So at times it was almost necessary to cheat for a good grade. Jan also makes everything clear in the grading criteria. However you should not take this class if you forget things easily, because youll miss some work.

He actually doesn't know that much. All he does is to lecture from slides and not able to answer questions. The exams are difficult and complicated nothing like he lecture on, and are around 50-75 questions. You would better understand about the universe and planet by watching a vsouce video than his entire class.

I worked with him as a proctor before having him so I was really looking forward to being in his class. He is really passionate about astronomy and hes really nice if you get to know him. Its not an easy class, but if you attend lecture and do the readings you will do well. He grades in a curve so that always helps.

Professor Dobias is very knowledgable and very kind. If you are going through a difficulty, he is willing enough to give you an extension. The class is divided into 3 exams and possibly an EC writing assignment towards the end. Exams are straight from the lectures and very minimally from the book; reading the book helps. Took Elementary Astronomy online, asynchronously. The work wasn't hard, the content was fairly interesting, but no lectures or interactions from Dobias herself. Each week we just had to read from the "textbook" and do an assignment + quiz, but it's not a real textbook, just very poorly written/confusing text on canvas she must have jotted down.

This review is for the lab class only. The professor is nice, but the labs have actually made me dislike astronomy. The lab class, and the labs themselves are boring and irritating. Most labs revolve around either doing monotonous calculations or finding small dots/numbers on large, clustered charts and inputting them into them into a table.
