ExcellentProf! Teaches not to be afraid of public speaking. Gets the whole class involved! You should know everyone's name by the end of the semester. I developed very good speeking skills that I will remember! You will use what you learn in this class forever! I highly recommend taking Speech 150 with Jan. She will put your fears to rest.

Jan is an amazing teacher! She wanted to make the class as stress free as possible and she totally did! Jan accepts all different types of writing styles so it helps when you are trying to express your point of view. I wish she taught more classes too; I'm going to miss her!

Janny is all about the satirical sarcasm!! At first it maybe hard to differentiate when she is joking and trying to be serious but once you learn her language she will teach you alot about life!!! Yep, she introduced me to the world of exclamation marks!!!! Thanks Jan :)

Holy, if you ever need to find an English teacher pick this one!!! She's funny, and makes the class interesting. I don't like english but it is by far my favourite class. She's understanding and increadibly helpful. She actually moves you around so that your not in your own little corner the whole time. Best, most fun class ever!!! Way to go Jan!

Jan Duerden is easy on the eyes. You will learn a lot in the class. Final is only worth 15% with lots of homework. It is necessary to attend every class, too much material is covered to miss. Only knock against her is she states that she does not give out A+.

Best run class I took in all 4 years at TRU. Lectures move really quickly so be ready. Jannie is really sharp, knows her stuff and is enthusiastic and entertaining. Possibly addicted to Starbucks. Very open minded, creative and she gets what its like to be a student. Only 5 feet tall but total firecracker.

Initially a little scary but once you get adjusted she's a fantastic prof that wants you to succeed with the philosophy that she's there because you, the students, paid her. Definitely the best prof to take English Composition with. Plus she's hilarious. Make sure to take many notes in class as her tests are very detailed.

I spent a couple hours yesterday crafting an e-mail using persuasion techniques that Jan taught me. Those three paragraphs landed me a contract big enough to pay for next year's tuition. She's not an ordinary English teacher: she teaches you how to stand out from the crowd. But you do have to work from it -- she has zero tolerance for BS.

Good professor. Lectures are entertaining, and she clearly outlines what is expected of you. Great help on assignments. Take notes in class because the midterms is based on them.

Her exams are based directly on what she says in class and her class notes. She teaches many tricks that are handy for essay writing. Jan is great prof. 3 hours of lecture, but you don't even recognize when it's done as she interests students. No quizzes and much writing. The only thing is that mid-terms cover mostly the material from the class, but u won't need to know it further.

Does treat you like you are an adult and consequently expects very high standard of work. Speaks really fast in class but there's no wasted time and you end up learning a lot if you put in the effort. My writing has really improved thanks to this class. Plus she's really funny.

English 1100 with Jan Duerden was great. I felt that she really cared about her students. She would send reminders about quizzes and there was no textbook or final exam. She marked slightly hard but her feedback made the class easier. She was also super funny and occasionally made fun of some students. Overall, loved the class.

Jan is going to scare you when you initially walk into the class. Don't panic: she is hilarious, truly cares for her students and is quite easy going. She likes putting students on a spot which can be quite stressful (public speaking etc) If you are an international student- don't bother. Take someone who is not as tough as Jen.

First day of class I seriously considered dropping the course. Jan is incredibly sarcastic in a good way, but in the first lecture fellow classmates and I read this the wrong way. Jan is the best prof I could have asked for. She is very clear in her grading criteria and is more than willing to help you with your paper. Papers have minimal word counts and tests are easy if you pay attention in class and review your notes. She clearly understands how to convey topics in an interesting manner. She is also very funny.

If you have the option to choose this class then do it! She is such a great teacher and has a great sense of humour. Her sarcastic remarks truly make the class better and she really makes sure you know your stuff upon entering a quiz. Make sure you take notes because there will be an often side track question, but other than that, a great teacher.

At first Jan seemed pretty intimidating, but after the first few classes I realised that she's actually a very funny and lovely person. She does not mark super easy, but she is fair and I found that my writing improved throughout her class. Be prepared to write essays, a couple quizzes (pay attention to what she says in class), and give a speech :)

Jan is a superhero. Not only does she have an amazing sense of humour, she sincerely wants to help students improve their writing. Jan started off with the easy concepts and built on it. I saw an improvement in my writing. She was also willing to provide feedback on the rough drafts. However, sometimes the deadline was before the due date on the syllabus or before the scheduled class times. Thus, if you did not watch her online lectures on Monday, you might miss them.

Jan was probably the most informative English prof I've had. She helped me learn many concepts that improved my writing; however, her grading was not super clearly explained. If you want to improve your grade, you have to really work hard because she doesn't tend to give feedback on how you can improve once you're above a certain mark.

It's probably one of my favorite classes from last semester! I am always skeptical about taking English classes as I have never found them enjoyable, but Jan makes lectures engaging and fun.

Jan is an amazing prof! Her lectures are engaging and she always brings humour in while keeping the class at a steady pace. There is a required 5 minute presentation to pass the class, but she made the atmosphere very supportive and relaxed for those who were more nervous.

One of my favorite profs at this school! I wish she taught more than just first year because i love how she teaches. Incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in creating a successful environment. I love everything about her as a prof
