Dr. Florian's class is challenging. He is a good lecturer and is obviously excited about chemistry. His tests are diffucult, but I will come out of the class with a very clear understanding of chemistry.

You people are crazy. Dr. Florian is a great professor. No, he doesn't hold your hand through the class and talk down to you like a Kindergarten teacher. He's a real professor who expects you to undestand basic conepts and make an effort. For that reason I guess he may not be well-suited for intro bio.

If you want a teacher who is going to hold your hand through the class, then Florian is not for you. He is very smart and reasonably entertaining. He is sometimes hard to follow, but is always open to questions and comments. Take him if you are looking for a challenging class.

P-CHEM 2 is a very difficult subject and Jan does a decent job of teaching it. I have no problems with the way Jan taught the class. Overall its just a tough subject. He sometimes makes mistakes when writing on the board, but he does present the information in an interesting and stimulating mannor. Very difficult exams!

It is a difficult class but he is really committed to his students and tries to help in any way possible. He is a nice, personable teacher but does have a semi-strong accent. He is specific and expects the students to know the material but he is also very fair.

He knows what he is talking about. He has clicker questions (and gives extra credit now and then from them). Homework is OWL. His exams are based on Clicker Questions (EASY). Entry exam (review) + Midterm + Final (with cheat sheet). If you put effort in to this class you're guaranteed a A/B grade. If not, you will get a B/C grade.

Low rating should have been a red flag. Made the mistake of taking him. Mult. choice exams are very hard! Does not like the book, uses questions from different publishers. Doesn't work problems in class (min). Clicker and hw points based on how you do on exams! If youre not strong exam taker good luck! Other students had it easier with other profs.

Florian isnt that bad of a professor. hes quite entertaining, and if you talk to him, he will explain everything to you until you understand it. His tests are not that hard, you just have to study off of the examples he gives in class. homework & clicker questions are extra credit! which is awesome! unless your there to lean something

I do not understand these people! Professor Florian is one of the best teachers I've had. OK may be a surprise to some people coming into college that they may actually be challenged once in a while and not everyone will hand them A's, but if that's your outlook you won't be successful in academia anyway. He is a brilliant guy, give him a chance.

I think most of these reviews are too critical of Florian when really he isn't the problem. His policies are very fair (drop a test, no attendance required) and he is a genius! I think the problem comes in when students think they can get through college level science courses using HS study habits. Don't just fake your way through Mastering. STUDY!

Obviously quantum theories and the corresponding math are going to be difficult and unfortunately a lot of people blame him for their lack of studying. But he's so nice and teaches well and he's always trying providing any way he can to help you learn and understand the material. Plus his grading scale is very fair. Overall a good teacher!

He was a good professor, he really knew his stuff, and had a very fair grading scale. However his test are a little hard, but not impossible. He is a good pick.

I really liked him!!! His grading scale is very generous (80%-86%=A-, 86% and up=A). He is very helpful if you go to his office hours. His tests are difficult, but you will be fine if you read the book, go to class and take notes, and do extra studying/practice. He puts one or two practice problems from the lecture on the exams so GO TO CLASS.

Mr. Florian has really improved in his teaching. I took him for 101 two years ago, and he was having trouble explaining things to students. Now, I think that he really makes his lectures fun and interesting. He is always available and gives great feedback!

Florian is an amazing physical chemist. I had the privilege of doing research with him and having him for class. He is always accessible and caring to his students, and is very passionate about what he teaches. Overall great choice

Florian puts chemistry into a greater context. If you attend his lectures / take notes you'll actually learn so much more than just how to pass tests. He is very passionate, very knowledgable, and really great lecturer. That being said, you have to put work in and know how to study.

Prof Florian is one of the best professors I have had in the sciences. He is very passionate about teaching and truly cares about if his students understand the material. His lecture style is great. He made a class of 300 students feel like 30 and found ways to make the class interact with the material while cracking jokes the whole time!

Florian was a great professor. He was very passionate about chemistry which made me want to go to class and learn. He gave really difficult examples during class but it helped for the tests. Going to his lectures and doing homework were the most helpful to do well in this class.

Take Professor Florian! He is the best professor at Loyola. He has a great personality and amazing public speaking skills, so you feel engaged the entire time. He gives positive feedback constantly so you never feel intimidated to participate. He cares about his students and is overall a great guy!

Florian made the most difficult class of my life very enjoyable. He really wants everyone to do well, and cares about each student even though he teaches hundreds. He gives out gifts at the end of the year and writes very clear and beautiful notes!

best teacher I've ever had. He spends countless hours outside of class doing practice problems and ensuring we all understand the material. If you are taking Chem102, take it with Florian, you will not regret it!

He is a fantastic professor. He is condescending if you ask a dumb question , but you will not forget that experience. So it is totally worth it in the end. His exams are brutal, but with his teaching you will understand the material very well.

Great professor, even better person. I recommend taking his courses if you ever get the opportunity, he will take you under his wing and mentor you through more than just his classes. Be ready to work hard. Test are beyond difficult. But grading is beyond fair. He makes you "fail" at his problems so you don't when you take the real chem exams

Florian is one of my all time favorite profs. He presents the material so well and so organized. Do not skip class and take notes and you'll be fine. Textbook is useless. Join a study group

Jan Florian is as one commentator said "amazing". By far one of the best teachers I have had. Really knows his chemistry and is happy to help explain topics. Great Lecturer and one of the main reasons I am going into chemistry. If you ever have the chance to take a class with him do it! Again you wont regret it.

Really great teacher. Super nice guy and does a great job of getting his students to understand the material in a stress-free environment. If you are struggling with the problem sets, just go to office hours and he will help you out. He wants everyone to do well. In his upper level courses he gives out a very generous curve.

do whatever you can to take chem with Florian. he somehow manages to make chemistry fun and not intimidating and he is super engaging. its weird to think i wont have him next year after two semesters with him! seriously, go out of your way to have him

Dr. Florian's class has challenged me to ask questions and think in ways I haven't been able to do before. He is such a wonderful person, he does so much and wants you to succeed. Granted, his tests are rather difficult and you must teach yourself. It's annoying now but you will be grateful later.

Very funny and interesting in lectures. All material requires application, so work all problems given and then some. Writing your own practice problems is helpful too. Exams are very difficult and there is virtually no partial credit.

Florian does a good job of making a really boring subject interesting. He loads lectures up with plenty of jokes about blowing stuff up and professors driving volvos. I had him over the summer and he would call breaks to go watch the rain (which is what 2.5 hour long lectures need)

Awesome professor! His explanations are very detailed. He emails you all his notes and gives you last year's exams before so you can see what the problems will look like. Easy class take him!

He explains chemistry in a whole different way. I really enjoyed him, but you can't just use him to get you the grade. Need to attend discussions and do your own practice. He explains CHEMISTRY, not just example problems. I really admire this guy as a teacher and a person. He's also won almost every teaching award there is, FYI.

Florian was great. The subject matter was new for me, so the things we learned were really difficult but Florian was easy to follow and I enjoyed attending his lecture even though it was early in the morning. His knowledge of the subject and organization during the lectures consistently amazed me, and I would strongly recommend his class.

Easily the best professor that exists for chem. His lectures are great; they explain everything really well, are not muddled and unclear, and make the class easier. Yes, his tests are hard, but hey, take his lecture and you are OK.

Absolutely beautiful lecturer and I hate chemistry. Thoroughly enjoyed the lecture - was so clear I barely had to read the book (got an A-). Could teach chemistry to a rock. Going to open disc. not that helpful unless you have very basic questions. Extremely organized and logical, if you need to take chem, do it with him.

Definitely my favorite professor of the semester. He's very clear on what he wants in class and what is expected from each individual.

Professor Florian is awesome. he doesnt make you learn the crap that you will never use and keeps things simple. Attendence is MANDATORY because only his lecture materials are on the exams. Very helpful in office hours as well.

If you are taking chem definitely try for Florian! He is the best professor there is, and you will leave the class wanting to major in chemistry!

Was a difficult class managed to get an A by studying my B off. Pulled a hundred on the final, still don't know how. Florian is a good professor, but you have to play close attention, see him one on one and do all the practice problems to full understanding.

Super great professor! If you can take him over the summer--DO IT! You will work very hard & may fail & many students drop out, but if you take the time to get to know Jan and go to class you can get a good grade & learn a lot! Take him, he is awesome & has the whole hot professor thing going on! :)

Great guy. Easy class to take for first year! Must have changed his teaching becuase he is fun with Chem.

Prof. Florian by far has the nearest, clearest notes of the chem professors. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. He will make time to meet with you if requested and he makes office hours about what the students want. He keeps class light by making jokes and having challenges. Overall a solid choice.

Prof. Florian is the definition of a perfect professor. His handwritten lecture notes are detailed but very clear and easy to understand. He truly wishes that all of his 300 students succeed and makes sure to answer everyone's questions both in person and through email. Highly recommend taking jim - you'll never want to skip a lecture!

Professor Florian is amazing! I got an B+ in his lecture, and I am horrible at chemistry. I wish he could teach every chem course I had to take. He made learning chemistry easy, and I was never stressed out with his class. It's impossible to not learn and do well with him.

Only professor I know of that could write, erase and talk at the same time. Despite his status, he helped students during many office hours. It was a tough class but he made easier with good explanations and pictures.

Professor Florian is one of the best chem professors ever. He brings concrete analogies to lecture that relate to the course material, which consist of items you use every day. He really cares about his students and their understanding of the material and will always make time to answer questions. Very fair exams with enough time, too.

Florian is great! He's super funny and his lectures are very clear. The exams are tough, but that's accounted for with his grading scale. I couldn't recommend him enough. You'll learn a lot in 302.

Dr. Florian is such a wonderful man, he makes class enjoyable with his jokes and always has a smile on his face. The way he teaches is also exceptional, he gives so many examples in class so that you are prepared for the exams. He is always accessible for office hours. Although exams are fairly tough, his grading scale makes up for it.
