Being a young professor, she really knows what grabs a student's attention. Class follows the powerpoint slides she posts online. Each class has a FUN activity or experiment that includes the whole class. She loves to give out bonus marks as a prize! Wonderful and my favourite class yet!
WONDERFUL professor! I'm pretty sure this is her first class ever but you'd think she has been teaching for years. super engaging and totally available to students anytime. all exams are multiple choice, but she gives you everything you need to do well. so, if you don't it's definitely not a fault of Jans. !
Very good professor! Used many different styles of teaching for different learning styles. Interesting lectures, full notes posted online before class. All exams were fairly difficult, averages were usually around 65. Exams multiple choice. Overall great quality!
She's awesome! The midterms & final weren't too bad, if you can study for them & understand the content well, you can pull of a 90. Her class was very interesting, we always did activities, she cracked a few jokes every now & then and she was actually a really good teacher! She's happy to help you outside of class!
Jan's class is enjoyable to attend! She is very straight forward and incredibly helpful to all her students. She is kind and patient and always has something interactive to make the learning process even better! It's her first year teaching I believe and she is doing an outstanding job! Definitely can't say this about all professors though!
Jan is fantastic! She has the full attention and respect of all the students in the room. The powerpoint notes are posted prior to class on PAWS and she uses a variety of methods to teach each topic. She is flexible and easy going.. not to mention very funny! Her class will be your favourite in the semester!
Jan is one of the best profs I've had in 3 years of university. She is so knowledgable and speaks with zero judgement which is difficult considering some of the material we covered. The workload is not too heavy but the exam was difficult. A lot of writing. Overall I would 100% recommend her.
Best prof I've ever had.
Not one of the better profs I've had. Thinks she's funnier than she is.
She was great and explained everything in great detail
Jan is one of the best profs I've ever had! She made her lectures very interesting and fun to go to. The notes were always posted and she knew what she was talking about, uses a variety of methods to teach each topic. The exams all multiple choice and she had a lot of opportunities for bonus marks! Highly recommend to take her class very FUN!!
Love her! Favorite prof by far. Gives very detailed explanations and posts all her notes online prior to class.
Jan is awesome! She makes class so engaging and is super funny. She does interactive activities with the class which make the class more fun. Always has a funny bonus question that is easy if you went to class. She gives tons of opportunities to boost your mark too. Also gives out cookies and candy all the time.
I found her to be a lovely lady and a great professor. The material was interesting but easy and the tests and paper reflected the material well. The slides during lectures sometimes felt vague but everything you needed was included and the textbook wasn't necessary. Lectures were skippable but it was much better having attended them.
She is amazing, she is the best professor I have ever had. She truly cares and actually teaches her students in various strategies to allow everyone a chance to learn in the best way. Many opportunities for some extra credit work and if you put in your best effort you can receive an amazing grade.
Yeah, she's a good teacher and explains things well, but when it comes to midterms and exams, she will put questions on the tests that had nothing to do with the material we studied in class, and when you combine that with the fact that the tests are weighted a lot, it pretty much brings your grade really low.
Jan is an excellent prof for explaining and lecturing, very good. But because of COVID and school/exams being online, she had to make them harder than they woudve been in person so there cant be cheating. and oh MAN did she make it hard. Hardest exam I have ever written would not reccomend. Awful. Next to impossible to pass as I did not!
Not sure if it is because learning is online because of COVID and is trying to minimize cheating or if she is always like this, but she put questions on the exams that were not from material I had seen covered and the questions are way too ambiguous for anyone to actually get right. I likely would not get good marks even if I had cheated.
It's my first term in uni and Jan has been SO welcoming and accommodating for first year students!! The class being online is difficult for everyone but she seems to have taken the extra step of allowing us to get to know her instead of just mindlessly listening to lectures from a stranger. She is so kind and genuinely cares about her students.
Jan is a great person, however online class is sooo easy to fall behind. Psy120 was 60% final, and 40% midterm, no assignments to keep you on schedule. Lectures pre recorded too. Both tests muliptle choice but only one minute per question, so not enough time to even read the question twice. Gelech curves grades so easy to get by, but stressful.
She is one of the best professors I have ever had. There is clear communication all throughout the term and the work load is very light. She is flexible in the course schedule based on how the class is feeling about due dates. The textbook for this class is free and there isn't a ton of reading. Lectures are long but you will never feel confused.
Jan is so wonderful! I went into the term not knowing what to expect because of online classes, but she has made the transition super easy. Her lectures are engaging, easy multiple choice exams, and she gives bonus marks! Highly recommended!
I loved Jan's class SO much. My saving grace class of online Uni 2020. She has one midterm, a final paper and 3 bonus assignments. Exams are clear and reasonable, do the practice quizzes and take note of the examples she talks about in class and you'll be fine. Her lectures are easy to follow along and she really really cares about her students.
For a first-year course, she made this class such a blast, one of my favourite classes I had this semester. Can't wait to have her again for the second semester!
Although there were a lot of lectures and readings to get through, Jan was always helpful whenever you needed it. Jan is a real gem in the psych department at U of S.
Everyone getting angry at her over things totally out of her control is complete bogus. She is easily the best prof I have had this semester and I am so happy I took this elective! I would love to be in her class again sometime soon.
Jan was my favourite prof this term by far! Her lectures were super interesting and funny, and she gave lots of bonus marks! What I appreciated most was how much she cared about her students. I didn't feel connected or seen by most profs in online classes, but Jan really sympathized with her students and made me feel understood.
Jan was probably the best teacher Ive had. I didnt make a lot of in person classes as my job messed up my schedule while taking the class but I still passed fairly easily. The lectures I did attend proved that Jan cares about her students success and really can connect as a teacher. She is quick to respond to any questions and marks fair!
I had Jan for psy120. She was very open to feedback and you could tell she wanted the best for students. The grade was only based off mid term and final, which was not my favourite set up. I personally found the tests difficult. But an extra 5% was offered through participant studies and other options like papers, which really helped my grade.
I LOVED professor Gelech! Even when school went online due to COVID, she by far had the best lectures/ slides of any prof of mine. Super engaging, connects the material to real life, and provides opportunities for bonus grades. Only down side is that your grade is based on a midterm and final only. So maybe be ware if you're not a great test taker.
Lectures are very heavy and I found it easy to fall behind. She was accomodating though once the issue was brought up. She only had the midterm and final as exams which was okay, but she also provided a lot of opportunities for bonus marks. Her lectures were very engaging and she did an excellent job teaching you the material, not just telling you.
great prof! explains material really well in her lectures and is always willing to answer any questions. super nice and very generous with bonus marks, etc.
Nice prof, long lectures so I'm glad I could listen to them in 2x speed. Really wants her students to do well and seems to care about how they're doing as real people. Gives a lot of opportunity for bonus marks and gives interesting examples to help teach new concepts.
This class was 60% final, 40% midterm. No assignments to keep you on track. About 3 hours of lectures per week and that was it. The tests are multiple-choice but you do not have much time. The content was pretty easy, but I imagine that most students didn't watch the lectures/couldn't pay attention when watching hours of monotonous content.
Best Arts and Science prof I've ever had. Even with taking her class during COVID, she managed to include participation in her recorded lectures which was fun. I actually looked forward to her lectures every week. Her tests weren't hard as long as you studied reasonably well. 10/10 would recommend her classes to literally anyone.
Jan is so amazing omg, even with online recorded lectures she makes it so interesting by inserting clips etc and giving her personal experiences. She replies in detail to emails and answers more than I asked for. 10/10! Made me love psychology
Prof. Gelech is so sweet and really cares about her students. She is super easy to get in contact with, all her exams were fair and pretty easy to take as long as you paid attention and took good notes. A real gem! I definitely recommend her for your first year psych class for sure and hope to be able to attend an in person class with her :)
Make sure you focus on her lecture content and pretty much everything she says during the lectures are important for notes and exams. It's all multiple choice questions. She's extremely understanding and I can tell she wants every student to succeed in her class. One of the best profs I have come across so far.
Dr. Gelech is the best prof Ive had at Usask. Her lectures are extremely in engaging. She conveys her passion for psychology and vast knowledge of the subject so well that her lectures are impossible to hate. She also cares about student learning and wellbeing a lot. The final is significantly harder than the midterm! i had 120&121 w her!
Jan was an amazing prof! I took two psych classes online this year and I was able to get a great mark in her class! She is so nice and understanding, really wish there were more teachers like her.
Most of her test are focus on the lectures, but her lectures were never boring. She actually sounds like shes enjoying talking about anything related to psychology. She also gives bonus marks which is nice!
Definitely, my favourite professor, I've ever had. Genuinely cares about all her students. Lectures are very engaging. Always makes herself available outside of class. Many opportunities for bonus marks. Midterm and final were both fair- no surprises.
Jan is awesome, best professor I've had by far. She is so nice and personable. She's easy to talk to and is really understanding. Her lectures are really interesting and she is a great speaker, she makes it easy to listen to her. I hope one day I can take another class of her's.
I really enjoyed Professor Gelech and found her class very interesting. She responded to emails almost instantly and was always available if you needed help with anything. There were many opportunities for bonus marks which was also a plus.
I love her class a lot. Pay attention to her uploaded lectures because it will all be on the tests. Tests are all multiple choice. It's definitely not hard to get good grades! She also responds to email super quickly. It shows that she cares a lot about her students!
Such a good prof. She makes lectures fun and interesting. The extra credit assignment is great and fun to do. The essay was also very fun bc you have complete freedom over what you write. I would, and have, recommended her as a prof to all of my friends. Fair marker and easy to get a hold of outside of class.
lots of lecture material, i think shed be great if this class was in person but online there is just too much lecture material to get through. everything on midterm is based on lecture but since there's so much lecture material its hard to get through it . she is a great lady though and if you are motivated you will do good in the class
I loved having Jan as my professor! She's a very lovely person, and I like how she would bring her own experiences and examples of her kids into the lectures. Sometimes the lectures can be very long, but she makes them entertaining by using video clips, her own stories and pop culture references. There's not a lot of reading either which was nice!
Easily the best prof I have ever had. She allows you to do bonus assignments to earn extra percentages on your final grade, as well as an optional paper if you'd prefer to have a lesser-weighted final. I took her PSY 121 course and took her HLST 110 course just to have her as a prof again. She is awesome
I personally had higher expectations going into Jan's class, everyone adores her in the class. But I've found her to be tough and made her final exam questions abstract to the point that I don't even understand how it relates to the material.
Her midterm was fair, however her final (which was worth 60% of your grade) was the most difficult final i have ever written. Most of the questions were completely unrelated to the content we learned in class, ive never even seen some of the terms on the final and i studies for 3 weeks straight,
Her exams had multiple correct answers which was very frustrating and confusing. The final was not fair at all. She does give extra credit but its very obvious she curves grades which is very frustrating.
I loved this class! The lectures were long but very engaging and I looked forward to watching them. My only complaint was the final grade only being based off the midterm (30%) and final (70%) unless you chose to write an extra paper. The tests were a bit difficult but she did offer extra credit opportunities.
Very test heavy with the final being worth 60%. Questions were very difficult on the final and she tries to save face by giving everyone a 5% boost on the final to cover up her curving the grades. Avoid this professor if you can!
She seems like a good person that cares for her students however the tests here were just ridiculous. Course relied way too much on tests with no assignments what so ever and the questions on the tests were ambiguous with multiple correct answers depending on how you look at it. She very clearly curves her grades and gives an extra 5% to save face.
Great professor, she gave very engaging lectures and explains concepts in great depth. Well organised. I would definitely take her class again
Her exams aren't too difficult, but they're also not too simple. She will appoint a TA to grade the papers, and they will regard your 200-level papers as PHD papers. Last but not least, she is an easy grader who gives everyone a lift.
final was kind of hard but still a very easy course, this class is a grade booster some of my friends ended with a 100
Engaging lectures. Final was 60% of overall grade but opportunities given for bonus points and option to write a paper for 30% (decrease weight of final) lecture based w/ a few required readings (less than in previous years, mostly for definitions of terms). Didn't curve grades just gave 5% bonuses on tests. Reviewed for 2 days before tests, got 99
I find Jan to be a caring, organized, and professional professor of psychology. Ignore what others (or perhaps one person masquerading as many) have stated about grade curving, as these individuals do not seem to understand what grade curving is. Lectures are varied and interesting, but perhaps heavy on detail sometimes. Solid choice!
Jan is an amazing professor. I took this class completely online and found success in watching the lectures and taking detailed notes about the things she expanded on. I found the lectures /topics interesting to listen to and overall had an amazing experience with this prof. Also, she doesn't assign you a lot of TB readings which is nice!
awful prof. too much reading content go through in a week
It is very easy to follow along with the lecture videos , and the class is not too reading heavy which is nice. The final is worth a lot, but there are optional assignments for bonus marks. She is sometimes a bit heavy on detail when using examples related to sex and it can be slightly uncomfortable
Absolutely one of the best professors. Her lectures are the best!! She explains everything soo well. And you never even need to touch the book just follow her lectures and slides and you are all set.
Professor Gelech is the best professor I have ever had. She explains everything so well, gives lots of bonus opportunities. Even gives 5% bonus marks for exams during a break or a holiday as a gift!! She is very responsive to emails. You can tell that she cares a lot about her students. If it was possible I would take every class with her!!
It was a very difficult class, would not take with this professor again.
She has some of the most thoughtful lectures ever! You can tell she puts LOTS of time into them to make them unique, engaging, and interesting. She provides bonus opportunities and gets rid of unfair questions that most people get wrong on exams. I highly recommend her! A true gem of a prof.
Jan's lectures for health are all too long as they should be much shorter. Have to pay a lot of detail to every specific thing she says because everything is fair game. The health class is still a new class so there are new material being added which gets annoying because the course is all over the place. I advise to take Health with another prof.
Very insightful lectures - albeit long. Although they were sometimes tiring to get through (more so because the class was fully online), I found them quite interesting! Dr.Gelech seems to put in a lot of work into the content of her lectures, which is very respectable! She doesn't just read off the slides, which is something quite rare these days!
I definitely think her lectures are engaging. However, some of her test questions are very ambiguous and frustrating. I feel some weren't even discussed in class. I took notes in every lecture, did the readings, and studied (like actually) but I don't think doing more of those things would've helped me.
Her lectures are quite long. Studying each materials week as it is taught is beneficial for the midterm and final. Optional movie review, but you can to well on just the midterm and final. Textbook readings are very short and some weeks there are no readings.
The best
Professor Gelech's social psychology class has been the best course I have taken. Her lectures are thoughtful and well planned out. She constantly engages with students during the class. The bonus assignments were great ways to earn a few extra marks. No textbook just occasional light reading.
Dr. Gelech is an amazing prof! Her lectures are interesting and easy to follow. Her classes are very enjoyable and good grades are easy to get. Attending classes in person is not mandatory but super helpful as she does a really goof job of explaining concepts and providing examples. Highly recommend taking classes with her!
Jan is incredible!!! She is easy to understand, uses relevant examples, and is the most understanding professor I've ever had! I missed my midterm due to a scheduling error and instead of penalizing me for it, she let me rewrite it on another day. Definitely recommend taking a class with Jan if you ever get the chance :)
Although Jan is a respectful and kind prof, there was no structure for the class. Powerpoints had irrelevant information, and half the time the courses were supposed to be in person but mainly became online. Midterm was terrible, she misinformed us on what modules were included, which she admitted to but blamed the class for the low class average.
Jan Gelech is a good teacher but many of her in-person classes ended up being cancelled. The midterm exam did not seem representative of content covered in class or supplemental readings and was quite difficult as a result.
Jan is very knowledgeable about the topics which I appreciate, but the course itself is very difficult. There's only a midterm and final + an optional paper, and a lot of people did badly on the midterm. So many of the lectures were cancelled, which was inconvenient. There are bonus opportunities which is nice but I wouldn't recommend taking this.
Professor Gelech is a good teacher when she shows up to class. She missed around 1/3 of the classes due to various reasons, giving us recorded lectures from 1-2 years ago. She didn't write her own midterm and as a result, it was full of questions that didn't relate to course material or were from later chapters.
Jan would be a good prof to audit, but I would not take her classes for credit. Her lectures have bad pacing and she speeds through material near the end. Your mark is based on a midterm and a final, her exam questions are ambiguous/like mental gymnastics, and sometimes ask about insignificant details from lecture/textbook chapters she assigns.
Jan is okay however, she seems to have trouble maintaining a good pace for lectures. This class is very light overall and if you do the practice and the reading you will do fine.
I personally enjoyed listening to Jan. The midterm was fair and straightforward, however, the final had questions that were way more ambiguous. I would recommend watching the recorded lectures instead of going to class cause u can adjust how fast she talks. If u prefer going to class, be warned she missed about 1/4 of classes for various reasons.
Jan's online lectures were excellent. I recommend taking psych as an online class, so you can work at your own pace. Material can be hard to grasp, doing it online makes it easier to understand. My only complaint is that the lectures sometimes cut out and you miss what she was trying to say. Specifically the last lecture on Chpt 18. Great prof tho!
She is pretty good! She will say something during the lecture that you never expect a professor to say in a professional environment and I really like her for that. Her examples are hilarious. He notes are godly (but you cannot CTRL+F) and exams are very, very fair. Don't do that course review paper though - it's too much risk
I took Jans health studies class and it was awful. When we had in person classes it was good but Jan constantly canceled classes and instead posted readings and videos. The tests are very hard and i found not related to what we learned in class. Overall i think Jan is a good prof but my experience in the class was poor.
Jan is awesome! She really cares and knows about her subject and it shows. She is ready to help and responds to emails quickly. There are tons of opportunities for extra credit and the tests are fairly easy. Plus all tests are online! I definitely recommend her classes!
Grades are only made up of the midterm and final, unless you do the optional paper. The notes are alright but I would recommend attending lectures for clarity. I found the exams sometimes had questions on unrecognized material. It is a interesting course and you can succeed if you attended lectures and take notes. The midterm and final are online.
Grades are made up of only a midterm and a final, and a optional paper if you choose. Material on the exams was nearly unrecognizable. I attended lectures and took notes and still the exams had way to much material that I had never even heard of. It is difficult to get a good grade, but did provide opportunities for bonus assignments worth up to 4%
She is great on teaching psychology knowledge, and she really shows her caring to her students, but her teaching style is not recommended for people whose native language is not English because she is a tough grader and no textbook relies on.
She was not a bad professor, however, material is very heavy, lecture are very bare and there is alot of modules within modules. Because this was an online class, I am not sure if it was assumed that students would just work on school all day, but each module was needing to be completed within a day. Each video of 30minutes with 6+videos per module
I liked Jan at the start, fast with emails and an easy midterm, but at the end of the term she fell off. I was having trouble with the online final and despite saying she would be available all day on email, she did not respond to me until after the online final had closed. Not to mention the final was very difficult with unrecognizable material.
Jan is entertaining in her teachings and she made this course fun and a credit very achievable. My favorite part was the 3% extra in bonus marks, which we got through a personality mask project that was fun, easy and introspective. Her prerec lectures are very long though, she tends to dance around her points and overelaborate at times
I loved her class! attending lectures is definitely necessary but she is great at explaining and interacts with the class. She also uploads lectures so it's easy to catch up if you do miss a class. I found health studies pretty easy and would definitely take another one of her classes.
Prof Jan has amazing lectures, I enjoyed them. Some weird TA though, even when assignments were adjusted based on feedback, marks were lower. While the feedback and grades are unclear, and the feedback is asking for something that did appear in the assignments. And Prof Jan seemed to leaving it all to the TAs.
jan is a great prof for this course if you have to take 121 take it with her
Loved Jan. She elaborates on her slides and is enthusiastic about what she teaches. She offers so many bonus opportunities. Anyone who needs a psych class, take her
Great teacher, really nice would love to have her again!!!
Jan did lots of things well, like she was very understanding and honest. I enjoyed her lectures a lot. Finals and Midterms were rough - many questions contained synonymous answers. I had to guess between a few things because no one particular idea had been stressed as the best answer. Pretty good; fine tuning needed
Jan is one of my favorite profs at USASK. I could keep listening to her lectures all day. Yes she does sometimes tend to over elaborate but overall she is a really good professor and her lectures are super insightful and really helps you understand the topic. The lectures are long but I enjoyed watching them as it was very interesting.
Super fun and interesting teacher. Makes me so excited to come to class and learn from her. This is the third class ive taken from Jan and I wish I could take all my classes with her!
Engaging professor who cares about the content. Brought in artifacts to show how progress, like a leech + lobotomy tools. Midterm/final are obscure multiple choices, more memorization than application. Would draw a slips of paper from a hat and whoever she pulled got an extra 1% in the class. It seems unethical to "gameify" our marks.
Lectures were lengthy and confusing for note-taking. She was extremely vague about the midterm as if she was unsure what was on it herself, but the final was more reasonable. She apologized by curving the grades at the end. While she was somewhat professional and knowledgeable, her expectations were unclear. She seems a better fit for psychology.
For a first year class the grading is incredibly difficult. Very hard marker and so many lectures. Do no recommend taking this class.
Great prof overall! Her lectures were engaging and included lots of applied examples. Lots of opportunities for bonus marks. The one thing I didn't like was that the midterm/final were both completely multiple choice, with some questions based on really obscure facts that were mentioned once in the readings.
Very good lecturer and person! The course is set up and organized very well and overall pretty easy. I found her lectures very engaging and interesting, I also like the way she paces up and down the room while talking.
Wonderful prof I had her for Psych 121 and HLST 110. Attend the lectures!! People get lazy and stop coming and she promotes people to come by giving free bonus marks. She gives out bonus mark assignments as well make sure to do them! She responds to emails fast and brings props into class and really encourages people to speak and ask questions
Jan is a passionate professor who makes the material engaging. The exams can be challenging, but she offers plenty of bonus opportunities. unstuckstudy was a game-changer for my study prep.
I loved Dr. Gelech as a person, however did not enjoy her teaching or testing style.
Very engaging & interesting lectures. Promotes people who attend lectures by giving out free bonus marks (bonus marks are also available through assignments). Relatable & funny. Uses a variety of entertaining demonstrations in lectures. Exams were both online & weighted very heavy (40% midterm, 50% final)- take it as you will. Overall recommend!
Jan had engaging lectures with many examples, making them memorable to recall on exams. She responded fast to emails and was a fair marker. Would take her class again!
The lectures were good- I just was not that interested by a lot of the course material. She is very attentive to solving problems with the online exams, and is quick to give out bonus points if issues arise. There are also up to 3% bonus available for doing extra activities/ assignments. Recommend.
Took this class online and Jan really made a connection, even though it was online. Online lectures are long and many assessments had to be performed. The multiple choice questions were tough in the midterm and final. My paper was graded extremely tough, especially with this being a 200 level class. I am very disappointed!
prof. gelech had very engaging recorded lectures. there was a lot of content, but was manageable as it was a spring class. midterm/final questions were very straightforward, and there was a +3% bonus for optional assignments.
Amazing professor
She clearly explains the material well by using real life scenarios, and gives easy bonus mark opportunities in class that also helps students to fully understand the material and to test their knowledge of different concepts learnt in that lecture. They are optional but they definitely helped me to trial different tests we had to learn.
Just study for exams as the class happens. I studied the last week before exams, and it was annoying, around 9 hours worth of videos to watch for the midterm and another 9 for the final. I did well in the course, but use your time wisely; it's an okay elective to take if you want a strong average. she has bonus+writing assignment easy 4% boost
She draws you in with engaging lectures, but lots of information is unnecessary and not related to topic. Adds inappropriate activities and information, and doesn't give up the chance to bring sexual fantasies, toys, etc as well as obesity into every single topic. The test is randomly generated and includes graphs and stats.
Lectures were fairly bland but were interactive. Provides many different opportunities for easy bonus marks, but some are based on draws. Exams were fair and based on reading and slide material. I was not very interested in the class but its a grade booster with some effort put into it.
Lectures were a ramble sometimes, and while the tests were mainly straightforward, a few questions on exams were quite unfair. A fair bit of mandatory reading as well, but not too much.
