Mrs. Johnson is somewhat of a difficult professor. She is very strightfoward about what she wants and expects exactly what she said. Her class is interesting, and I learned a lot, but it is a little too much work for an elective.
really good!!!
she really knows about art. But sometimes she makes a big deal out of obvious and simple things. She is really demanding but she also explains very good.
good teacher, she is nice, lets u know what is on the test, lots of slides and videos. very friendly and personable.
she was so demanding on what she wanted that i had no freedom. all the ideas and sketches i had were no good. but to all the other students that she knew already from her other classes she was nice to and let them do what they wanted. i personnally could stand her. just be ready to work in her class.
The class is hard.. you're not going to get an A unless you put in some serious work. (yes I got an A after many overnighters) She is nice and Helpful, a little like a drill sargent at times but that's ok. You have more freedom in her class after she sees you can work on your own.
She was one of the best art teachers I've had, she makes her classes very interesting and informative. She likes to deal with elements of art as much as technique and you will learn alot. I also got a higher grade than expected.
Jan is an excellent drawing instructor! She will challenge you and help you develop your skill during the course. You will work the entire class period in this course, but it goes by rather quickly. Fairly lenient with grading, but from what I understand, this is not the case for her Drawing II course.
i found jan to be extremely personable and sweet. she is great with her demonstrations and knows alot about all areas of art. printmaking is her passion and it is obvious in her print class. she has tons of ideas and is full of nothing but encouragement. printmaking takes alot of time and discipline and her stick-to-it-tiveness rubs off on you.

I actually learned how to draw in this class! Attendance is important and everyday we learned something new. Mrs. Johnson is motivated and very interested in teaching and the class always had some good laughs.Good teacher- feels like I was in college!
there was no text book, but you spent about $175 on supplies. you have to be there for everyday, every class is important. you also nedd at least 4-5 hours of spare time between classes, sometimes you'll need 8-10 hours. she's very demanding, i don't advise you take a drawing class with her if you're short-tempered or easily annoyed
Excellent professor! I love this class, she makes u wanna draw and learn new techniques. She is very fun and makes her classes interesting. I am definitely gonna take her again and I would also recommend her to other students..Awesome lady!
every class is important.and make sure you have at least 8 hours of free time
BCC needs to put drawing one and two classes seperately! Not enough time was spent on either class. Jan likes to see students put in work, so make time for this class.
This teacher is nearly impossible to please. You will not receive an A unless she is enamored with you. She is frequently inconsistent, assigning a fair amount of work one day, then claiming the day it's due that it was supposed to be more than what she assigned. My best paintings that I spent nearly four weeks on got B's at most.
She was the worst teacher I ever had! This art electie required a power point and research paper! Way too much work for an elective! She acts as if you have nothing going on in your life besides her class. She doesnt care if you work full time and have four other classes and may not have ten hours a week to devote to her class! Do not take her clas
I had never painted in my life and actually learned about mixing color and how to compose a work of art. It was a fun class and I want to paint now. Jan is a thorough teacher and all of the classes were organized and planned. We had a few slackers in the class that created bad energy, but it didn't stop the rest of us.
(drawing 1) only take this class if you have 10 hrs a day to devote to her class only. nonstop drawing in class, and lots of time consuming assignments every day.too demanding
Very demanding class, fun and you need to make an extra effort. The professor only gives you an "A" if she is in love with you; I was a very good student, almost excellent and I got a "B" despite lots of a's. I liked better the substitute professor than her.
This is a real college class! I say that because it was demanding, but I learned a lot and feel I can now go on to paint with knowledge and some sense of personal expression. Jan is an excellent teacher, but you got to do the work!:)
She is not fair while evaluating or helping students; She is intolerant with any personal situation or commitment that you may have to complete an assignment in a rush time.. She decides who is going to receive her attention or help to develop any skill in the drawing process..she is unfair!
Only take this if you have 10+ hours of free time a week. Her grading is biased, if she likes you and you do less work you get a good grade. Do more work but she is just okay with you, get a bad grade. Intolerant of people's situations. Also she assumes whether you are really trying or not, despite everyone's different skill levels. :|
She does know her stuff and she is a veteran but you can only take her class if you have no life!!! Talk about having 2 final projects to turn in on the same day as your sketchbook, as if you have time to work on the sketchbook during the final project.... The class is very overwhelming!
Jan is an amazing profesor! she is very helpful. The class is very demanding but as long as you start everything in time you will be able to finish; only take this class if you think you would enjoy the subject because it is a lot of work. i thought everything was easy to understand.
She's a tough teacher but fair. I came out of her class like really developing a lot in my art skills. I would take her again, she's a cool teacher. Just make sure to do your best and she will grade you according to your effort;) I pass with an A;D
It might be tough for many students, but for art students who plan on pursuing art as a career and that take art seriously, they would love this class. I have gained so much in life drawing skills just because of her. She really knows how to reveal the true secrets behind drawing, but don't take her if you want an easy A though, that's for sure.
I loved this class.I am not an art sduent,I just took it for fun,and to take an east class, but also because I enjoy to draw.I learned alot, and if you dont like art dont take this class. We draw the entire time, and as long as you do your best and complete everything to your ability you wont fail!!She is also really nice, but you will spend money!
If you want to learn how to draw take this prof.I won't sugar coat it- It is a demanding class, but my skill level advanced because of everything we did.Ms. Johnson knows how to teach and is passionate about art. She is also nice!
This class was a nude modeling class, Prof. johnson is an awesome professor! she is nice and corky and makes the class enjoyable. it is surely not a class to fool around with because she doesn't play, grading is a little strict but you will improve your art abilities. Recommend her if you serious about art!
I took this class and ended up really learning how to draw. Professor Johnson explains every technique and demonstrates how to use the media. Everyday you will draw and you will draw at home too! There is outside work and you must keep a sketchbook. I like Prof. Johnson's teaching style, and she is FAIR. Just turn your phone off before class!
jan knows her stuff and she can smell lazyness a mile away. dont take this class if u dont have 4 extra hours per week to work outside of class in the studio. u will leave this class with a good knowledge of artistic prints.
This is a busy class for sure. I remember the teacher saying "Don't take this class if you are lazy". I am amazed at how much I learned about Printmaking and proud of the work I created. Some students in the class did not realize they EARN their grades. Just do all of the required work and you will enjoy the course.
Jan's Life Draw is NOT one of those "easy A" art classes. Got a C bc I had 5 classes and not enough time/energy to put in. She's a good prof, very nice but gives a LOT of HW. U keep a draw journal, do 1 paper, draw models each class, & MANY take-home projects. I DID learn the human figure.Take this w/ur easier courses, it will consume you, no joke.
she doesn't care if you don't have 10+ hours of freetime for her class she forces you to draw how she likes if you don't your grade suffers i don't mean subject i mean technique. she plays the i'm tough don't mess with me & i'm a victim no one listens cards a lot. she messes up the still lifes & changes assignments constantly. don't take her.
I found Mrs. Johnson to be a fair instructor and passionate about teaching drawing. I am not an art major and I learned how to draw:) I would recommend Mrs. Johnson highly!
I took Jan's class in the summer. I can def. say you need to have good time management in order to get her assignments done(properly). She doesn't like repeating herself so she demands your full attention when she's talking. She's pretty active, knowledgeable, has her 'woohoo!'moments &gives good advice to help with your skill improvement.
Very confusing and changed her directions a lot. She'd say one thing one day, and correct herself the next expecting you to have already compensated for her error in directions. Other than that, she's a decent instructor and she knows what she's teaching. I wouldn't suggest her for people who don't know much about art/beginners!
I have taken Mrs. Johnson for two classes now. After the first class, I made sure I registered for her class. I have learned more than I expected and am confident in what I am doing in my artwork. She's a seasoned teacher .
i have taken four semesters with Jan and I love her. she teaches you how to work and time manage and she isn't there to babysit you. I have learned so much from her and I am thankful. If you take her class, like all people she has her flaws, but put your ego aside and listen to what she is saying and you will learn something. office is always open
She grades based on talent than effort, and doesn't negotiate grades. I felt I was graded unfairly with each assignment and it seemed nearly impossible for me to get an A on anything. Especially considering I never worked so hard for any class before nor felt so stressed out to leave with barely a B. I would only recommend her to good artists.
Great Beginning Drawing Class and Instructor. I learned so much during the term. My only regret is not working in my sketchbook.... which was mandatory and I didn't take time for it.
Awesome teacher who is passionate about all things art. In 2-D I learned a little bit of everything and how to use a lot of different materials. Just come to class and give it your best. Do all of the projects, because I found out it all matters in the end.
Don't take her class please.
Good teacher and class if you want to learn how to draw. Projects aren't hard, but take time. Seasoned teacher who knows what she is doing!
Terrible professor! Do not take this class! She grades hard and won't take late work unless you have doctor's note. If you miss a class you will fail because you can not make up any work. She criticizes your work roughly, but doesn't actually teach you any drawing. I learned nothing out of this class, many had to drop because you expected so much.
Good Class if you want to learn how to draw. Prof. Johnson is organized and helpful. Be prepared to work outside of class if you want to get better and pass with a decent grade. No book and only 2 tests! The work is all about drawing!
Terrible professor! Do not take this class! She grades hard and won't take late work unless you have doctor's note. If you miss a class you will fail because you can not make up any work. she don't care if you work or not. she make u spend allot of money. She criticizes your work. I learned nothing out of this class.
Jan Johnson is awesome!! she is passionate about what she teaches and transmit that to students. If you are lazy DONT TAKE HER. Be prepared to work hard and manage your time. Jan really raise everyone bar. She teaches you how to be a better artist. 2 test: study vocab. Never be absent!!!! Do what you have to do, and you'll have a great time.
For the student that appreciates working hard in order to become a significantly better artist, I recommend her. Missing her class is unadvised because the physical demonstrations convey so much visual information. I recommend students who want to get an A to take only one other other class, since it is very demanding. Patient but no nonsense.
Too much information about art for a gen ed class. She will refuse to give you any credit for work that you were not physically in class to turn in on due date. Emailing work or submitting on D2l or handing it in next class will not work with her.
If you dont know how to draw dont take her. She doesnt understand
An interesting class for a first time college student. Pay attention to the lectures and read the text. I learned so much about art I had no idea how extensive it was. Now I can go into any gallery or museum and look at the art and discuss it. There are deadlines- late work is not accepted without the proper paperwork. She's very funny too.
She takes art seriously, so make sure you don't call an artist an author by accident. If you don't use the book but study off the power points then you'll get a B. Her class is off the book and PowerPoints (she doesn't wait for you to finish writing). Also, she isn't very understanding and wants it done her way for assignments. Study for tests!
I learned so much about art that I didn't know before and how diverse and connected it all is. YOU HAVE TO STUDY. this isn't an easy A. You definitely need to pay attention and go to class, but if you do, you'll learn a lot. Jan's a great teacher and she cares about her students and what she teaches, so that alone made me more interested.
Interesting class for me as I didn't know much about art. Pay attention, take notes and use the book. I am planning on a high B for my grade. Ms. J is passionate about art, she wants her students to feel that way too. It is a writing credit class so there are short one page response son art exhibits and online art. Also a museum paper.
Best art Prof. at Broward, hands down. If you are a true learner, hard worker, take her. It will be the best education you ever received in a community college. A lot of respects goes to her!
I'll make this short. Terrible professor will never take again. You spend all night, and I mean hours working on some stupid little project, perfecting every single detail, so in the morning we can "critique" our work and basically get yelled at for not having done something right, even though she never told us to do it in the first place.
her "constructive criticism" is basically her pointing out what she hates about your designs there's the rare chance she will point out something she likes. i hope you don't like to sleep bc this class will RUIN whatever sleep schedule you have. you'll carry your supplies to class everyday but never use them in class.
Lets start by saying this was all online. I took this class based on recommendation from my advisor. She assigns work as if this is the only class you take and have nothing else in life to take care of. The worst part, the critiques and grading are based off your skills rather than the criteria. Dont have art skills? Too bad
The most important thing in this class is time management. Only two tests given and the rest is all drawing. Each project needs its own time to complete. Some projects takes a few days to complete depending on how hard you work and your schedule. Also take notes on everything that's due. Project details, due dates, how to format, etc.
I found this remote drawing class (pandemic is here:( not too hard but time consuming. I had to find time to draw because the class is remote and lectures, demos, and other stuff is online when the class meets. She is competent teacher, funny, and does teach how to draw. I recommend Mrs. Johnson if you want to learn how to draw.
This teacher is the worst. Her critique was cruel. NEVER TAKE HER. She will make you do A LOT of homework and she grades based on your drawing skills, not your effort. She is very rude and does not have any sympathy. If you ever have her DO NOT ask her questions, she will as other students to respond for her humiliating you.
BEWARE ALL ARTISTS and especially anyone who wouldn't consider themselves an artist yet. DON'T LET HER BE YOUR TEACHER!! This teacher is hard to work with. She is VERY insensitive to her own students. Everyone in my class disliked her. I have NO idea why she has such a high rating. My guess is the higher ratings are from students who wern't remote.
She's a meh prof. She nit-picks every little detail on your work. It hard for her to ever just say you did a good job. Took her spring 2020 when covid hit. I would choose her if your really had to, but not the first choice.
My drawing class was remote because of the pandemic. I learned a lot and can see progress in my work but I had to make time for it. She is a competent teacher and knows what she is talking about. If you don't want to put out effort don't take this class! I can say a remote art class is a lot more work than meeting face to face.
This was my second time taking this course:( Prof. Johnson was new to me. This class was remote because of COVID. I struggled in the beginning because I was always distracted... then when I saw my grade going down I put more effort into my work. We had time to draw during class after lectures and watching videos she had made. Good Teacher-
She is a probably the worst professor I've ever had. she made me feel like the worst student in the class. It was my first drawing class ever and she graded my work on accuracy not effort. would never recommend anyone to take her course EVER!!!
Professor Johnson knows how to teach and I have leaned a lot. She doesn't suffer fools in the classroom and if you don't work outside of class in your sketchbook you will not get a passing grade. Everything counts, and I am glad I took her class because It's already obvious in my work. Attending class is very important!
Professor Johnson was a great introduction to what a college class is like. I had come from High School and had to learn a lot about getting things done on time:/ The projects were interesting and challenging. You won't get everything done in class, so be prepared to work outside of class. Ask Jan for help if you need it.
She's literally the worst art teacher I've ever had. I'm a pretty good artist and she never gave me more than a B. She makes me not want to be an art major honestly. Truthfully, creativity goes to her class to die. I would rather shoot myself in the foot and run a marathon than have to sit through her class again. Just don't bother with her.
I would NOT take this professor. She is extremely unforgiving and not an easy grader she only feels that there is one way to learn art and that is her way or no way. I have been in art classes my whole life and I have never gotten such negative and hurtful feedback from a professor. I was more stressed in this class then my math class.
I loved her class to learn new techniques and learn her skills. She is great when it comes to demonstrating, but when it comes to critiquing, she doesn't hold back. Nothing positive about your work. Other than that, she's a great teacher. Just gotta tone down on the negativity and bring more positivity.
Jan is a good teacher, knows how to teach and wants students to do well. I really like the class and am learning how to take my time with my projects and not blow them off until the last minute. That is new for me. She has a lot of patience and if you show interest or need help she is happy to help you.
Take this professor if you really want to learn & improve your art skills. She's awesome & very dedicated, willing to go above & beyond to help you become successful.
Good with lectures and teaching the content, however she is not very understanding when it comes to absences and tardiness. There WILL be a homework assignment every class and to get a grade for it you have to physically be there to get a grade, regardless of whether or not you turned it in online. Otherwise it's a zero.
My first art class was disappointing, with a big workload and subjective grading, lacking constructive feedback. Professor Johnson publicly criticized students (made one cry), showing clear favoritism, making success difficult if you weren't in that circle. Despite being an introduction, the class felt more like a showcase of how not to teach.
SHE IS THE WORST PROFSR I HAVE EVER TAKEN. I am a straight grade student, this is the first time I failed a class. She humiliated me the entire course, she used my drawing as examples of what not to do in front of the entire class many times. If you did a hw and follow the requirements but she didn't like it, IT WAS AN F even tho you did the work
DONT take her! If you're new to graphic design. It's her way or the highway, with grading so petty that a tiny smudge can cost you 20 points. Forget a material, and prepare to be embarrassed. Her constant critique creates a nerve-wracking atmosphere. Beginners lose motivation due to her strict grading and bad attitude. It's a creativity buzzkill
If you want to learn how to screenprint, take the class but also have it known that all these reviews since 2013 are all true. Jan can be a very discouraging professor and is very confusing in all of her procedures. Its her way or the highway and don't expect to negotiate. also expect to hear personal digs about yourself and classmates.
I had Jan for Silkscreen she is no-nonsense and expects students will do the work. I learned a lot in class and want to keep printing. I would take her again and know that my time management skills are better than when I started. Participation points are easy to get if I didn't forget to send my images.
don't take her, she is the reason I'm dropping out
Professor Johnson knows how to teach drawing and I am happy with everything I learned and my B grade. We had a fun class with a lot of students who did really great work! I hope to take Life Drawing sometime. Take her class if you want to learn how to draw anything.
Professor Johnson is a good drawing teacher. I learned a lot and saw improvement in my work during the semester. I would definitely tell other students to take her.
She's flexible with assignments and projects if you talk to her, but she gets annoyed quickly if you aren't immediately communicative. Expect to work on projects outside of class as you get further into the semester. She talks for a long time and doesn't like "backtalk"- got condescending as the semester went on. Still, her class is straightforward
Jan is a very tough grader for literally no reason. People who are new to Graphic Design or Drawing in general are met with constant criticism and low grades. If you are not perfect, you will not pass. Getting an A is virtually impossible. Attendance is mandatory. I do NOT recommend anyone taking her if they don't have to.
PLS read the RECENT ratings!!!!!! -Buy the materials when needed (some aren't even used) -Will play her own music, distracting -Will change lighting constantly -The lecture is a bit monotonous -It is difficult to have a constructive conversation -responses to questions came across as blunt, which made it a bit uncomfortable to ask for clarification
While she says in the beginning its ok if u don't know how to draw, she gets on u for not drawing things a way she expects and blames the reason on it being a "college course". no phones allowed. if u don't understand English or on the spectrum do not take, she will not accommodate for u. does let u show up after or before class to finish work.
I think I failed. liked her as a person, heartbroken about my fasfa to be honest. some teachers just don't know how to grade with the youth's needs. the grade book was too heavy and caused me to fail. I do amazing on projects and quizzes online or in person, but she doesn't teach what's on her midterm to be honest. like sit down and have a lecture
This was a hard class for me, but I did learn how to draw! I had no idea that there was so much to what artists do when they look at stuff and draw. Professor Johnson knows the course material and demonstrates everything, goes over the vocabulary. She expects students to keep up with the sketchbook and the material. Take her if you want to learn.
Not take it
Do not take. just take the class at south. she will say that we are beginners and that its a learning process, and then flip and say were lost. super passive aggressive, tough grader. told us she changed the midterm just to not see us draw again. if you have to choose between Johnson and Teresa diehl take jan tho
