very good!! love everything she does take any of her courses no matter what!!
super cool :)
Jan's absolutely fabulous - she's always willing to advise you, and she tells hilarious stories that are relevant to the course material.
A very fun and energetic prof that keeps the students involved
Fun, Smart and energetic, always willing to help out and, well, she knows her stuff.
Holy cow was this the easiest course ever!! I love taking courses with Jan she makes everything seem so much easier and enjoyable
Jan is a wonderful teacher, even though I did not find anthro interesting and skipped class frequently, I still enjoyed it very much when I did attend, and she's kinda sexy
Great woman, class, teaching style, stories, Ect. I can't wait to take another class with her, or her husband (Steve F.).
she is the BEST prof that I had in school...that is all I can say....your great!
This is a prof out of the movies, the one you feel inspired by, but not intimidated, if thinking of taking an anth class, take WHATEVER she's teaching-won't be your easiest mark, but you'll want to earn it
i like her.. she seems so passionate about what she teaches, it keeps you interested. although her tests are kind of hard and if you want to do well you have to spend a lot of time reading and reviewing for this class.
Jan is a great teacher, she is very clear on what she wants for tests so if you listen you'll do good!...From the back row she looks like Sigourney weaver in gorilla's in the mist. hahaha If you cna tkae her for a proff. she's awesome
jan is extremely energetic, she motivates students, tells funny relevant stories that make the material stick. her tests are pretty easy; she gives TONS of hints the class before the test! i really recommend her class.
She was fun. Loved listening to her stories. The little bit of entertainment (music, movie clip, etc.) at the beginning of class was cool. Power point lectures well done. Good review before exams, and she's a fair grader.
All I can say is AWESOME!!
Great teacher, Very clear. Gives you the long answer questions a week before the test! AWESOME
Jan is pretty good. I dont find anthro very exciting, but i think if she wasnt teaching, it would be even worse... she adds some excitement to teh class
Jan is a really fun, nice and kind of eccentric lady. Anthro 1000 was really more like Javanese Culture and Rice Fields 1000, because that is her personal area of expertise. If you dont have to take anthro, i wouldnt, but if you do, take it with Jan because shes a cool person.
Jan is really interesting. Sometime she is not so clear, but you can learn a lot from her if you follow along. She makes assignments and class interesting and fun!
I am not very interested in the social sciences, but Jan made class super fun. She's always willing to help, loves to teach and has good experience in research. However, I NEVER read a page because the readings were horribly boring.
She was amazing! I loved all of her little stories about her fieldwork and other things. She made the class super interesting, and not so stressful, as she gave out study sheets with terms and the sort answer questions. Make sure you figure out exactly what she wants in the essay..
she used power point in 1000 but not in 3210, so if you don't like taking notes from actual lecture you might not like her. amazing otherwise, if you need an extension on your paper, just tell her & she'll give you one. very easy marker for essays. gives you a study sheet for tests in 1000, use it!
jan is very helpful if you ask for it. she also makes the class as interesting as possible. not too difficult to.
An interesting course that was brought to life through relevant material. Nice variety of readings and lecture material. Attendance is mandatory in this class if you want to get anything out of it or simply a decent grade. Great prof with tons of knowledge and expertise in this field. Thanks Jan!
Great teacher... interesting class. Learning about her fieldwork was quite amusing. Great WebCT resources.
Amazing!!
Great prof! She makes class interesting by telling you stories of her experiences. Exams are easy if you pay attention. She posts notes on Web CT, gives you a study guide and sets aside class time for questions from the study guide.
sexy curls - great shoes that never stay on. her "partner" steve is one lucky dog! mindblowing!!
Amazing Prof, I was never bored in her class. She works for the students. If you attend the class you will do great.
This lady paved the way for me to turn to Anthro as a profession. She is one of the best profs i've ever had, interesting and clear in her discussions. Materials are covered well in class, and she invited questions.
I learned so much from this class...Jan is great at explaining concepts and keeping things interesting...and if you see her outside of class she's always willing to help you (and sometimes give you a couple questions from the test you're studying for!)
This class is so interesting.
I had 1000 with her and then had her for an applied study. I found her to be very helpful and encouraging throughout the process. She's very nice and she knows her stuff and knows how to make it accessible to a non-anthro major like myself.
Makes class interesting by her personality.
Turned what could have been a very interesting class into a prolonged Feminist rant; Nice person but would not reccomend her to anyone bothered by having Feminist ideals constantly impressed upon you!
GREAT!
I thought she was the best teacher i've had yet!I'd recommend her to anyone wanting to take Anthro 1000.. she gives great examples and shows slides and movies to help understand.
She is a nice person, but a bad prof. She does not write out notes or used power point. She is all over the place in her lecture and it is hard to take down notes, yet she expects you to regurgitate her notes word for word. There is no independent thinking encouraged.
First I can start by saying I am conservative and I sorta disagree with Feminism and Jan was a feminist and tried and true Anthropologist and I had some of the best discussions with her about theories relating to society ever and she really was interested in helping students and very relaxed and engaging and she now stands my favourite prof at UofL
Jan is an awesome prof. She loves to laugh and tries to make her lectures as interesting as possible. She is not an easy marker, but you can go to her before or after your test and she will absolutely give you ideas or tell you where you went wrong. She treats all her students as equals and I highly recommend taking a class with her.
Possibly one of the best professors. Her style of teaching prepares you for future classes. She makes you earn your mark which is only fair. Take good notes and always read for her classes. She is very approachable and always willing to help.
Jan is probably great for higher-level anthropology classes, but for a 2XXX she doesn't exactly know what's she's doing. All over the place, and lectures hardly relate to the assignments. She's great to go to for extra help, but you'll probably need to, given the disorganized nature of classes. Nice prof, but hard to learn from.
I really enjoyed Jan's class. She is funny, covers interesting material and the reviews are really not that hard considering.
Dr. Newberry is easily one of my fav profs. She works extremely hard to ensure her students' success, and keeps the info engaging. I would recommend her over any other anthro prof.
Janice is great. Smoking hot to.
She is a wonderful professor. She was willing to take the usual university experience and cater it to the need of her students. Changed grading scheme and everything to help us out! You do need to read the text book and know a bit about anthro but she is wonderful!
Best prof ever! Jan has a fantastic approach to teaching. I have had her for multiple classes. She is easy going and makes classes interesting. She expects a full effort, but isn't out to get you. She wants all of her students to do well, but doesn't just had out A's. Great balance. Take any class you can with her!
Jan is hands-down the best prof I have had at the U of L. She really knows her stuff and her lectures reflect that. She is very clear about what she wants and is a fair marker. Take a class with her if you have the chance!
Even though I didn't do very well in the class in my first year, she was an amazing teacher. I actually switched my major because of her. I definitely would recommend her classes, she's fabulous.
Fantastic prof! She is articulate and very knowledgeable. Mandatory is required, because her slides are mostly pictures and notes are from her directly. She has great stories to tell!
Awesome prof who really knows her stuff. In this class, pay attention to the slideshow, as her teaching style is mainly through lecture.
Jan is a great Prof, if you have to take an anthro class she is a great pick. Dont worry about buying the texts, you can get a good mark without them. But go to class, if you don't go to class and take notes your likely to fail
She was an excellent Prof who uses slides as a main way of conveying lectures. You don't *need* to use the texts to get a good grade, but they are helpful. If you are going to take anthro1000, take it with Newberry, as I have heard the others in that department are not very good. Very very nice.
Her class was awesome! I got such a good grade. Just go to the lectures and write down what she is saying. She has study guides and goes over them also. 4 exams that are all unit exams. She wants everyone to pass so just attend and write the exams and you will be fine. IF YOU SKIP YOU LOOSE!
Jan is easily my favourite teacher at the University! Anthro was such an interesting class, and I'm so happy I took it. Very rewarding and thought provoking. Recommend the class to everyone!
Jan is great, she covers a lot, as it is an intro course, so she wants you to get a feel for everything. she does online chats and before the exams you can ask ANYTHING and she WILL answer it. she's really funny and makes class fun.
Jan is a very happy go lucky and enthusiastic professor yes, BUT her teaching methods are pathetic. She puts pictures on her slides with NO description so if you miss a class you are screwed. I am a 3rd year neuroscience student and this class involved more work than that of my major. If you are not willing to attend EVERY class, avoid her.
Best prof! friendly, helpful, knows what she's doing. I would take her again any time!
Great prof
Jan is a great prof. Incredibly approachable, and really wants to make sure you understand the course material. If you don't get something, just go talk to her! Upper level classes are really based on readings so you have to do them in order to function - not sure about lower classes.
Interesting class. Good note taking skills are required though. They are so necessary for this class. After Prof. Wilson & Prof. Ferzacca, she is the best Anthro prof at the university.
I love Jan! I'm a physical anthro major, but she made cultural interesting. The way she teaches is very easy to follow - just take good notes. The textbook isn't exactly mandatory to read, but make sure you read the ethnography. She loves to hear from students in class, and is willing to clarify points. Helpful on assignments and gives extensions.
Jan is the BEST. No exams, essays instead - a supreme gift. She gives extensions and is very helpful after/during class and in office. Her teaching style adapts to each group of students - everyone is engaged and entertained. She makes a dry topic interesting and memorable. I want more of her. Actually - I wanna grow up to be like her.
Jan is amazing! She loves to talk and is an excellent teacher. She lets you think critically and subjectively on topics and she loves for students to pick her brain back.
I love how Jan makes this class simple, but extremely engaging. She is also very entertaining - great sense of humour!
JAn is really interesting and she always gives you an extra five minutes at least to get to your next class. She has easy tests and makes sure you know what to expect on them well in advance. She is easy to talk to as well which really helps.
Jan is pretty good, does her best to make class interesting. Tests were very easy, almost too easy sometimes. She constantly encourages students to ask her questions during class and outside of class. Her willingness to help students makes her stand out from other professors.
Jan is great! The course itself was interesting, but the books we read were bland. The tests weren't too hard either. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye out for Jan if you're taking any anthropology courses! She is very approachable, smart and kind... and she would hold regular review sessions and answer questions on moodle before tests.
Jan is awesome, one of the best profs at the U of L, very helpful and always makes time for her students. Learned a lot in her class. Must read the books because there are a few questions on the exams, but the books are cheap, short and are not like a normal textbook, they are fun :) Would love to take more classes form her :)
Jan is great! At the start it was a little bumpy, but once you learn how to take notes and what she expects on assignments, its smooth sailing. Probably the most democratic prof I've had; she wants student input on almost everything, and this really sets her apart. I didn't like the course material like I expected, but Jan made this class enjoyable
Jan is one of the best prof's I've had! No tests, just assignments and essays. She is very interesting and always prepared. The only downside is directions for assignments are unclear and when she tries to help, it only gets more confusing! She also had a TA who marked much harder which was a downer. Definitely take her classes!!
Jan is amazing. She is seriously hilarious and actually gets to know her students. The material is always interesting. However she doesn't make the assignments easy for you, you have to have strong arguments and evidence for your essays. Always name drop in essays, and relate people's ideas. Also her powerpoints suck so write down all the details.
I absolutely love Jan! She is very clear and easy to understand. This class is very interesting, and I would definitely recommend it. If Jan sticks with the group style class don't be intimidated it is a lot of fun and can really help your individual grade. I would for sure take more classes with Jan.
Amazing teacher! Enjoys what she does, which makes it easier to learn. Has fun with the class. Tests are straight forward as long as you go to class and read the textbook
Jan restructured this class and it may be offered as a group assignment class. There is not too much reading expected, yet a test every week. Jan has interesting lectures, she's funny, speaks clearly, and she knows how to grasp the attention of 280 students. Her tests are challenging, but she's there for her students if you talk to her. Great prof
Very unclear about key concepts. Exam questions are very vague, and some present more than one correct option, with one option just being "more correct". She will not help you if you ask her, she will just send you to the TA's. Overall terrible and frustrating experience, and I would not recommend anyone take this class with her.
Lectures were minimal, lots of group work. Tests were short and vague, with unclear answers, some were merely "more right" based off of a simple opinion. As some of my group members put it: this class was as useless as a tv is for blind people. Her TA's and assistant were the only ones that were able to correctly answer any of my questions.
Excellent lectures that are clear and on point. Has TAs made available for students. Is fair and is more than willing to give you a chance to discuss your concerns.
Jan is a great prof, I had the privilege of being in her test class for group based learning. The tests are not too tough, issues presented in class are interesting. She cares a lot about helping first year students find their way through uni life. There is quite a bit of reading but it's spread out and clear. Important to pay attention in lectures
Jan tried something new with our class this semester and said she would be doing it again in the future. The class was interesting for the most part, except alot of content to go through and reading to keep up on. Jan really cares about what she does and she shows that in that lectures. Jan will change your way of thinking about anthro for sure!!
Absolute great class. No exams, just weekly ten question tests done with individually and with a group. Marks just for showing up and participating. Makes the subject extremely interesting. Great class, would take again!
Group tests every 2 weeks, but you are put with a group of people you do not know so if they do not study very much then your group mark will suffer. She's good at answering questions and the lectures are often quite interesting. No final exam!
Going to class is mandatory. You need to work hard in this class, but when you do, you are greatly rewarded! Jan is a fair prof. Very willing to help and is a very good lecturer. Her slides are just about useless though unless you went to the lecture.
I love Jan! I've taken her for many classes. She makes a great effort to know each student as individuals. Her lectures and materials are dry, but she's such an engaging and hilarious woman that they're hard to ignore. You do many assignments in groups, half your mark comes from individual and the other half from group work. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Such a great lady! I've had her for many classes. Her lectures and materials are a bit dry, but she's an engaging lady and will make you look past it all. Does group work assignments worth half your grade, but it's beneficial. Class overall is a bit boring, though. I would highly recommend taking her classes above all others, if you can. TAKE HER!
Oh my goodness, JAN IS AMAZING!!! Great explainer, gives thoughtful feedback, is available 24/7 - you can tell that she really cares about students. She takes time to make sure you understand the concepts, and is always happy to elaborate. She's very personable and makes an effort to learn everyone's names. Take her class, you won't regret it!
Great professor. Caring. Lots of reading, but tests are fairly simple.
Jan is a very thorough explanation-giver and utilizes the system of group-work in order to help students succeed (and I'd say she's very successful in doing so). I truly enjoyed the material learned within Jan's class and her caring personality and interesting lectures aided in that. Just be prepared to participate in group discussions!
I have had Jan for two classes now, and it's safe to say she is my favorite professor at UofL. Jan is a very caring person, and I would encourage everyone to go to her office hours if you are having troubles in her course as it is clear she wishes for everyone to succeed. If you're an anthropology major, make sure to take some of Jan's courses.
Absolutely fantastic! Enough said.
Over 40% of your grade is based on group tests so if you don't like group work I don't recommend this class. Jan is a great prof and truly cares about every one of her students.
takes the average of your individual test and team test which is good but her tests aren't easy lecture slides are mostly pictures
Jan is funny, passionate, kind and approachable. The team based learning approach was daunting at first but I ended up loving it! It was the perfect class to take during online classes since there was such a heavy emphasis on team based learning. Wonderful course taught by a great Professor!
One of my favourite professors I've had. It made a class that I had no big expectations in be one of my favourites. I felt as if Jan made me interested in anthropology and make me take more of her classes.
Jan is so so great! I hate group work usually, but the way she does it makes it so enjoyable and usually helps your grade go up no matter what. Jan is genuinely a lovely person and makes her lectures fun to listen to. if you do the readings and show up, the class is an easy A
Jan is fantastic. Her lectures are engaging and easy to follow. Her slides are only speaking prompts so you'll need to go to class and take good notes. High recommend!
Jan is my favourite teacher at UofL, she always makes time after class for quick questions and always has available office hours. her classes are based around group learning, so it creates a nice sense of community within the class. 10/10 would recommend Jan to any student.
I would recommend this class! The textbook was online, but that doesn't mean there wasn't a lot of reading. Jan is good at making the lectures interesting, just make sure you take notes because the slides are mostly pictures.
Jan is by far one of the best professors at UofL. She is extremely knowledgeable, funny and caring. This class is a huge GPA booster as you work in groups for the test (still have to write individual one, but it is averaged out with group test). Highly recommend to take any class with her!
Jan is one of my favourite profs at the U of L. She is so kind and genuinely cares about the content she teaches and the people in her classes. Grades were based on 2 papers, a few (group) quizzes, and participation marks. If you try to connect with the course and put in the effort, you will definitely be successful.
I was excited for this class as it's dual listed with GEOG, but Jan made little effort to connect the two subjects in a meaningful way. The only connection is that the final project is making a map. That's it. If you like ANTH with a touch of mapping, you'll probably like the course. GEOG majors, skip this one and take GIS or Human Geog instead.
Jan is truly a gem, her lectures are so engaging and relevant. She prides herself on group work, which helps boost your grade. I especially recommend this class for education majors, as the idea of childhood is discussed a lot. She is by far my favourite prof, and this is the best class I've taken. I heard that she's retiring and now I'm so sad :(
jan herself was fine. it was the TA rebeca who was an insanely tough grader. i would be fine with a bad grade if she offered actual feedback, which she didnt. she criticized my work for not being what She would have done so it was hard to improve without somehow literally being inside her skull
