Great class! Very interesting.. and she knows what she is talking about. Good discussions
Best prof I had ever had!!!
Great prof; very enthusiastic and friendly, but exams way too difficult. Focused on very picky textbook details. Too much emphasis on theories and not enough application. Great class movies (esp. Women who Kill )!
Best Prof EVER!!
I've taken three courses from her and she's awesome. She explains concepts clearly with enthusiasm and mixes in plenty of humour. Her exams are fair and she is very easy to talk to during office hours.
Awesome prof. Exams pretty tough...got slaughtered on the multiple choice. Very interesting lectures - even on theory. Very helpful and willing to hear all viewpoints.
She's really funny and an interesting speaker.
Really good prof. I wouldn't say that her exams are really tough, but she does pick on small details. As long as you attend her lectures and study her notes, you can do fairly well in her course. She does have a tendency of going a tad too fast though.
She is excellent you can't get any better then her.
She seems to really care about her students...
amazing prof, can successful run class discussions of 300 students
Fantastic professor! Can honestly say she is the best prof in the world. Really makes an effort to get to know all her professors

Best prof ever, makes the funniest jokes! Easy tests I guess! But her classes are interesting to attend!

decent,
seriously best prof. i have ever had. encourages class discussion and people to oppose what she says. knows her students and will use their names in a class of 200. pay attention to her little notes and real life connections to materials as it will be tes
Very Cool prof. Willing to speak with students after class. Nice debates in class. Fun!
Her class debates can be fun although a bit too time consuming. Her tests are a bit specific compared to the notes you get during lectures. All in all though, an excellent prof to introduce you to sociology / criminology.
Actually can explain stats well to those with a fear of math!
Very skilled and delightful professor. Recommended.
Very good teacher. She explained things well, took time to answer any questions. She also had fun with the course.
Jana was an awesome prof! She explained things really well, always made sure she was talking slow enough for us to keep up, and tried to make things as interactive and interesting as she could in a class of 200. I reccommed taking any of her classes! :)
the easiest class ever. but she is such a ditz. she has no idea about the class ... and she just wants to fit in with the crowd. jana, you are over 30... ok?? like 35 almost... and you are NOT funny. you suck. stop hitting on people in the class
You look like a moron complaining about entertaining lectures. This prof puts her heart and soul into keeping the class lively. Don't mistake animation and humour for lack of intelligence. She's DR Grekul for a reason.
Had her for 100 and 225, I can't believe anyone would say anything bad about her. She is amazing, one of the best profs I've had.
Her class was interesting, but her exams were killer
Jana is a great prof, she keeps it interesting and everything is easy to understand. Her tests are a little difficult so spend time preparing for them! Otherwise a great class.
Awesome prof! Loves what she does and helps you whenever possible! Tests I found were somewhat detailed. The first test the hardest but that was all theory. She's big on names, MC only, study your notes (and make sure you write examples!) and the text well! Great class! =)
YOu must know the material well to do well. But its not hard to study for since u dont get too many notes. She portrays the material very well. Her exams are somewhat specific, and can be a little tough. I just dont know why class average is 75. Must be full of keeners. Damn you.
Good teacher! Exams were easy. However, I've heard some say that they're slightly difficult. I could see their point of view coz she includes things from the text which are contained in the little boxes/figures on the side. Also, EVERYTHING she says in lec is free game 4 exams. Pay attn & its easy!
omg I love her! So many different elements to make the class interesting: videos, dressing up as a biker chick lol, bringing in prisoners to talk to the class. WOW. Seriously, A+ for effort! But only a B for me in the class...ohwell it was fun!
great class, really approachable. the exams are fair, and she always finds a way to make things interesting,
Very nice, enthusiastic, interesting professor. A little bit mundane in notes, but really what class isn't. Interesting videos. Easy on the eyes for sure
She was an excellent prof. She was upbeat, easy to talk to and made the class interesting, considering she brought 3 lifers to class. Her tests were based a lot on text, but also class material, so make sure to pay attention. I would definitely recommend this prof! :)
This is the first time I have ever had Jana as a prof and I absolutely love her! She was incredibly helpful outside of class and was always concerned that she wasn't making the class fun or interesting enough. Lots of guest-speakers broke up the boringness of lecture material. A+. Loved this class!!
Jana genuinely cares for her students and wants the class as interesting and as fun as possible. She is one in a million when it comes to profs. Take a class from her if you can, you won't regret it. This was the fourth class I have taken and would take more if I could.
Made the class interesting
Great class & great prof! Exams were fair. Showed two of the same movies for 100 and 224, which I found redundant. Other than that, I totally recommend the course!!
I love her and i loved the course. She will very helpful and very entertaining. Her many examples made it really easy to understand all the concepts. She infuses the class with videos and guest appearances so you will not be bored. I look forward to being in another one of her classes.
Interesting lecture. Exams are common sense. No online notes so you have to be at lecture 100% of time (or have a friend in class). Exams progressively harder, leaning more towards statistics rather than facts. Good stuff! She looks good from afar, but her hairy arms sketched me out on the midterm.
Good course, really easy. 3 multiple choice exams. Easy A if you go to all the classes and study a bit. Awesome prof. Really excited about the subject, and gives fun examples.
Where do I start? Jana is an incredible prof and I absolutely loved this class. It was interesting and Jana makes the material easy to relate to. Some in-class discussion and she even brought in Lifers for the deviance part of the unit. If you ever get the chance to have her as a prof, take it!
She is a nice person, and could be a great prof. Unfortunately she has a strong feminist bias, and the psychology theory section of the course was embarassingly out of date and grossly innaccurate.
Very good prof...so interesting, i loved how she always engaged us in class disscusion and she made it work even though there was 300 of us!! easy stuff if you study a bit. overall, really good prof
Jana is a very nice person and makes the class very fun to attend. However, she is a hard marker in my opinion.
Jana is great... you can tell she really enjoys teaching and sociology. Totally worth it!
She is awesome! Because of her soc is my minor. Never missed a class...very entertaining and easy to understand
Jana is enthuastic & bubbly. She speaks clearly during lectures & provides lots of examples. Janaunderstands that stats can be especially difficult for those in the "arts" - she tailors her teaching for those who really have alot of trouble with math. She always available to assist students. 1rst midterm was very long, but easy!Shortfinal.
Jana's awesome. She makes the material as simple and concise as possible. She's fun and fair, all around an excellent prof.
Jana's great and easy to approach. She will try explaining concepts in many different ways so everyone can understand.
i love that she smiles all the time. she creates a friendly environment!
Went to all her classes, did all the assignments, asked for input on what she expected, and walked away with a D. Im an A- student. She's nice, just terrible as an instructor and marker! Avoid her
Amazing, very interesting. One of the few professors that I looked forward to going to their class
Jana was always smiling and very approachable. She made class interesting and arranged two tours of EIFW and Ed Max, we also had numerous guest lectures. The experience of this class will never be forgotten. The only thing I would suggest is to question what is expected on the synopsis and paper because she was not clear on what she wanted.
Jana is an enthusiastic instructor. However, she didn't schedule her lectures well. There were huge gaps in between her lectures due to videos, guest/student presentations. She also didn't discuss what she wanted for the 40% term paper. She marked very tough. Lastly, the textbook she assigned was very wordy. An English prof would totally burn it!!
I liked Jana as an instructor. She was very charismatic and made the class material interesting. However, I feel that her tests were unfair. She tested on minute details and not broad concepts.
I found Jana amazing. I've taken 3 classes with her and would have taken more if the U of A hadn't been stupid and given tenure to some random dude instead of her. She is the reason I am a SOC major and I found her classes interesting, entertaining and her tests extremely easy if you listened to her advice on what to study. My favourite prof ever!
I love her! She is the best prof at the university and it is because of her that i am a soc major. She is extremely helpful and will go over things as many times as it takes for you to understand. She always answers her emails and makes time to meet. I've already taken 3 classes with her. TAKE HER CLASSES! You will not regret it.
her lectures are very easy to follow. very friendly person. easy on the eyes. i'm not sure what kind of "biases" some other posters were pickng up, but i thought she was very fair and balanced -- i'm guessing its those posters who actually had the biases. if you go to her lectures and read what she assigns, i don't see how you can do bad
Loved this prof and this class. Lectures were always interesting, perhaps because she is very enthusiastic and in touch. Provided easy to understand examples for all concepts. Tests weren't too hard. I would definitely recommend her, and will be looking for her classes in the future.
Had Jana for SOC 100. She's puts LOTS of efforts into making this class interesting and humorous. Her tests are easy and fair. Be sure to attend class and *read* the textbook! Lectures are amusing but dont cover everything. Tests feature lecture based questions... "According to our lecture in class, what did ____?" JANA'S DEFINATELY RECOMMENDED!!
Worst teacher I have ever had. Tests do not correspond with the material she teaches at all.
Awesome prof! Friendly and very interesting. Overall great course. 3 MC exams - questions slightly challenging but still very fair. :)
Jana is the best professor I've had yet. She's engaging, passionate, and fair. If you attend all classes and read your stuff, the exams will be a breeze. If you can get this professor, DO IT! You won't regret it.
Jana Grekul was a great prof. She tried to make lectures as interesting as possible and she was very respectful and pleasant to students. The class is pretty easy, her exams include alot of information from the text but some specific to lectures. The information is not tough, so if you study both the text and lectures her tests are not tough.
Good prof. Funny, nice and loves her subject. Tests on lectures and make sure you read the textbook (she usually takes case studies and terms from there). Also tests on random stuff. overall great class and prof
I can't say enough good things about her. She is very interested in her field and it shows. Classes are interesting and you even get to go on 'field trips'
Good prof, fairly easy exams which are based on both the text and her lectures.. very friendly and makes lectures interesting.
I love her class... great amount of charisma.
So nice!
Great Prof. She is able to help out whenever you have a question or concern. Read the text, keep up and you will appreciate this class greatly. Can't say enough good things.
I had Jana for 225 and for 327 and she is amazing! I wasn't going to take 327 but I saw she was teaching it and took it! Her exams can be a little tough but if you read the text and come to class, she does a really good job at explain and tries to make everything fun! Love her!
****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like this class. Jana is very intelligent and knows her stuff inside out. She is always prepared for lectures and is good at keeping the classes' attention (even with those boring theories). Her tests are consistent and fair. Go to the class-its mandatory. She gives out lots of hints for the test.Definitely recommend a class with her!
Bet Prof ever! she is so nice and makes the material really interesting and brings it together with lots of review and relating theories to each other. You have to have to have to go to class to do good on the tests, but it I found myself wanting to go to class! overall great Prof.
She is a great prof, what more can I say. Her guest speakers are awesome and she does a great job of making the class fun and interesting. The exams are detailed, so much sure you know the textbook inside out.
Great professor. A little intimidating at first, but she tries her best to make some dull theories interesting.
Awsome prof. Knows her stuff! She keeps your attention with interesting examples(not to mention she is so hot!) Class was textbook and lecture based although i think a A was definately possible by just reading the text. Exams are mc and have a lot of content. FAIR. If you get a chance and are interested in crime at all take it with her!
She was great! I loved this class!
Jana is by far the best Prof I have had in my Experience at the U of A. She is very personable and really cares about he students. As long as you show a genuine interest, show up for class, and try your best you'll do well.
Awesome prof, good at lecturing and brought in a number of guest speakers + a prison tour. Textbook is a bore and if you continue in Soc the author will end up popping up a number of times.
Jana is great prof, super nice, helpful, and very caring. But the class is curved, and she definately picks favorites.
Jana is an awesome prof! He lectures are always interesting - I looked forward to this class every week. Reading the textbook is important, but she talks about the main concepts and points in class. Her tests are fair, easy to get a passing grade, but there are questions that differentiate between ad A and B based on if you read the textbook.
Jana is such an awesome prof!! If you have the chance, definately take one of her courses. She explains everything really well and gives interesting examples.
Jana is a very good prof. She is motivated about her subject and shares her passion for sociology in her teaching. Test's are fairly easy if you study the text! She pulls a lot of questions from in class discussion and videos so attendance is needed! Tutorials suck!
Excellent Prof. Tough marker though, she has super high expectations. Classes were a blast, as she brought in guest speakers and took us on prison tours. Awesome experience!
Not as great as everyone says. Spent the first week talking about nothing and usually ended up repeating everything out of the book (which she cowrote btw). Showed us a video in the second last class when we still had the last chapter to go over. Good enough for an intro course. Not bad but not great either.
Jana is the best prof I've had so far at UofA! I had absolutely no interest in Sociology before taking her class and she ended up making it really interesting...she gives great example, keeps your attention during class and provides an outline for the exams. If you get a chance to be in her class-TAKE IT!!
She is an awesome person and really easy to talk to, but very, very disorganized. Classes were often moved around, including presentation dates and exams. She was also useless when trying to make an appointment to talk to with about papers, it seems she is never on campus. The help i got was also useless. Also a very, very tough grader on papers.
She was very nice, had lots of real-life examples, and kept the workload spread out well. I started out thinking I wouldn't like the class, but now I'm super glad I took it.
Inspiring. Always accessible and obviously caring. Super-smart. Criticisms obviously came from students who didn't attend class and/or didn't work hard. Dr. Grekul is top notch.
Jana is amazing! She cares about her students and genuinely wants us to learn something. She certainly has high expectations for students but her marking is fair and she gives great feedback. Recommended for sure!
Fantastic prof! Jana makes every class a delight to attend. She is extremely engaging, smart, and an overall excellent lecturer. She gives lots of fun examples to help with the understanding and memorization of each concept and She is very helpful and caring about her students. I would strongly recommend her for anyone considering sociology.
Awesome Prof, very clear and interesting.
Excellent orator. Very clear when explaining concepts. The textbook was co-authored by her and is therefore extremely relevant to exams. I went into this course not really knowing what sociology was (I took it to get an arts credit). It turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Recommended for both science and arts students alike.
wonderful prof, her class was always interesting and she is an extremely engaging lecturer. She really cares about all of her students she even takes the time to learn most of the names of students! She is very clear about her expectations (you need to read the text) and her lecture is a supplement (as she co wrote the text). Great class.
Jana is great, her stories are very interesting and make you actually want to pay attention. She does talk a lot about her own accomplishments though, which gets repetitive. Her tests are fairly easy they just have a lot of random information. Get her for sociology!
Great class. Great prof. Jana is an amazing lecturer. Classes were very interesting, even when the subjects being taught weren't exactly thrilling. I would jump at the chance to take another of her classes :)
Jana really is a great proff. Her exams are pretty easy if you come to class and read the book. Final is not Cumulative so thats a plus. The textbook is really easy to read and you have a ton of time to read it. Pulls alot of questions from class discussions. Only problem with this class is tutorials which are a waste of time.
Best prof ever. I loved her. Absolutely fantastic lecturer- probably the most engaging I've had yet, actually. The seminar component was great too. 1 midterm, 3 small papers for the tutorials and a final. Exams were easy. I really, really enjoyed this class.
Love, love,LOVE her. Best prof ever...So smart and such a good speaker!!
Very enthusiastic which resulted in a CSL tutorial. It's a lot of work and we know that nobody goes into sociology to actually learn. We all just want an easy high mark. Take another teacher without the tutorial. Class is also curved, nobody should ever have to get under an A- in a sociology class.
Really BB...bring a mask!!
She is really nice and enthusiastic! Great lecturer and I do enjoy listening to her talk in class. However, the tutorials are waste of time. It's like having 2 classes in one!
Great prof! Always bringing up stories of shooting moose, motorcycles, and gangs, which are HILARIOUS. A very easy class if you read your textbook. She tries to remember names of people, which is impressive in such a huge class.
She is a good lecturer. But doesn't put notes online. Doesn't matter b/c everything is in textbook.Wasn't clear about what chapters she was lecturing about. Caused some confusion when studying. Tutorial component was a waste of time. Way too much work for an intro class.
Awesome prof. Very entertaining and invested in her work. Very helpful.
Jana is totally awesome: made my top 10. I hardly studied and still did awesome: she makes her exectations clear and is very approachable for help. Just make sure not to miss class. She makes lectures interesting and even gave us prison tours. Very cool woman; I definately recomend her to anyone interested in critical examination of penal system.
Grekul is an awesome prof! Her classes are interesting & she cracks funny jokes! She has real personality & is far from dry! Due to the nature of her lectures, reading the text is mandatory, otherwise you'll miss out on a lot of material. There was also a *surprise* CSL (community service learning) component to the course, which was a lot of work.
Overall jana is a great prof. The CSL tutorials on fridays are pointless but are easy marks. The only big complaint is the final exam. YOU MUST attend all classes as she asks questions from lectures and the textbook readings are mandatory as more than half of the questions were based off of side stories in chapters. This killed my final grade
An interesting prof who clearly enjoys her subject matter. The CSL component was incredibly elementary and unenjoyable however. Class is easy enough.
Easily one of the best professors in the department. You'll have to work hard, but it's worth it.
Great prof, really easy to understand. Helpful with any questions you may have. Be warned, the CSL tutorial made me drop the class. The TA was horrible and her marks were very biased. Overall Grekul is a great prof with fair exams, just be careful for CSL tutorials.
The CSL component was awful and made me hate this class. Nice prof, but I found examples repetitive and boring.
She's an amazing prof for sure. I would recommend taking all the courses you can by her. She brings in awesome guest lecturers(someone who spent time in prison for murder and a prison psychologist to name 2)and her own lectures are clear, engaging and well organized. Exams are fair and your grade will reflect the time you put in to studying.
FANTASTIC PROF!!! Can keep the class interesting no matter the material and so helpful outside of class and easy to talk to. It doesn't hurt that she's also extremely easy on the eyes.
Good class, I would recommend taking this class if you have some interests in criminology
Grekul is awesome! Amazing guest lectures, she explains things very well, and is very helpful outside of the classroom. Only problem is that I didn't particularly enjoy her style of lecturing (her talking for 80 mins straight with ppt), but not much she could do about that. But she's easy on the eyes and is a good prof overall. Recommended.
Jana is a great prof! She is excited about teaching, engages the class, uses real-life examples, and brings in fascinating guest speakers. She has a tendency to tell us relevant stories for an hour and then rush through the text material, so make sure you study the text! She's interesting: she doesn't simply read the textbook to us, and while I love this aspect of her teaching style, others seem to hate it.
Jana is awesome. Difficult class but an easy marker. Moreover, she is genuinely concerned with having a positive impact on her students; not just lecturing and then grading what you absorb; but rather she is a truly inspiring woman. It is to the detriment of any student not to take one of her classes.
Jana is an awesome prof. She is super knowledgeable due to the fact that she's the director of the Crim program. Really engaging and makes you want to learn more. Brings in great guest speakers. It's important to go to classes and read the text though, she tests on both. Would definitely take another class with her :)
She was so enthusiastic and straight forward with her expectations, loved her class.
Great professor, she really knows what she's talking about and explains things really well. Only complaint about the class is that it is way too much work for a first year course. Weekly assignments, research paper, midterm, poster (AND a session!), and a final exam. It's a lot to add on to all the other schoolwork.
Best prof I've had in a while. She is so passionate about what she does that you can't help but like it as well. I loved attending her lectures because she made them interesting and exciting.
Jana is absolutely amazing. She deserves an award for what she does. Her lectures tend to seem a bit irrelevant sometimes (her examples) but you can connect it in the end. The only thing I recommend is to choose CSL than media. CSL is free 10% (volunteering) Media is a paper...5-7 pg double space...too much really. I totally recommend! She's great!
Jana was very inspiring, right from the beginning. The class was quite interesting as well. Tutorials that came with the course were useless, but easy marks. Attendance is mandatory, Jana asks about the videos and what she says in class on the exam - the exam questions are sometimes random. Oh, reading the textbook is a MUST. Recommended!
IF YOU ARE TAKING SOC 100 TAKE DR. GREKUL! SHE IS AN AMAZING PROF. YOU COULD BE HAVING THE WORST DAY AND SIT THROUGH HER LECTURE AND NOT HELP BUT SMILE OR LAUGH. HER HAPPINESS AND EAGERNESS TO SHARE HER PASSION IS CONTAGIOUS! I WOULD ALSO RECOMMEND TO DO THE CSL COMPONENT OVER MEDIA.
Jana is an amazing prof! She is incredibly passionate about her field. Her classes were insightful and inspiring. Her lectures are full of real world examples to bring life to the material. Lectures were great and tests were fair. Honestly, Jana was one of the best, if not the best, prof I have ever had.
If you do anything in your University career worthwhile it's taking a class with Jana. She is the most amazing, inspiring woman. She is so entertaining and somehow manages to engage a massive lecture theatre. Not to mention her amazing sense of humor. Super respectful. Her class is easy, but also super interesting.
I've taken two classes with Jana and she is by far my favorite professor at the university. Vibrant, passionate, brilliant, genuine, caring. You will learn about the world, not just a textbook, and she CARES. This woman is my personal inspiration and I idolize her. Grateful to have been able to be her student. TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!
I didn't go to class often and I ended up with a B+
JANA IS MY FAVORITE PROF EVER. She is so helpful and supportive because she genuinely wants to see you succeed. If you can, take a class with her. You will not regret it!!!
Dr. Grekul is the best professor I've had. She cares about her students and engages them in smart ways. Her effort makes a lasting impact. If the actual material we learned doesn't stick (though it has for me) then at least all of her positive energy will :) Nobody could walk out of her class unhappy and without having gained something important!
Jana is by far the best professors I've had in my first year! She is so passionate about what she does, and makes sure you understand the material as well through her examples and humour. She is so amazing, absolutely recommend her!!
Awesome! I took this class as a blow off class and it sure is. She is amazing, so amazing that i am seriously considering take a soc minor or an after degree in soc cause i am in my last year. Lectures are clear, discussions are encouraged, funny yet inspirational, knows her material and always prepared. There for you when you need help!
Super easy course, if you need a GPA booster her class is one to check out. Honestly you don't have to show up to class, just read the textbook and do the practice questions (if you still have the code in the textbook) and you'll ace it. She's super nice and easy to approach and clearly knows her stuff.
She basically regurgitates the textbook, but gets off track during class discussions. She says that everything in the textbook is fair game for exams, so its honestly okay to just skip all the lectures and read the textbook on your own.
BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I WANT HER TO BE MY PROF FOREVER. so helpful, lectures are interesting (she's a criminology major and brings up the coolest examples in class) not a lot of exams and exams are fair!
Pretty hilarious and tries to keep the class engaging. However, it's really hard to be motivated to come to class when you can pretty much get an A without ever attending and just reading the textbooks. 90% + of tested material is straight from the textbook.
The class midterm averages were either high seventies or low eighties. If that doesn't say anything, i don't know what will. Anyway, Jana is a friendly, inspirational, and interesting professor. SOC100 is quite dry (common sense), so there wasn't much that could be done about that. A 4.0 is very achievable in this course.
Dr. Grekul is the best professor I have had so far! She is so enthusiastic about sociology, and really knows her stuff. She is super cool and easy to approach. Her notes are clear, and coincide with the textbook, so you feel pretty confident when you're studying. Exams were fair. Over all - great prof, take her class if you get the chance!
Jana was amazing. Like she said, the textbook is the primary source of material so if you can just read that you'll be sure to get an A (class isn't curved). She does highlight important points for exam material though, so it's good to attend class. She's also very approachable if you need any extra help
amazing prof
Jana always had such high energy, and the happiest smile you will ever see. She sent nothing but positive vibes, and that alone willed me to attend class and do all the readings. Great class!
She is amazing!! Her exams are straightforward, just attend her class and read the textbook. Definitely a GPA booster!
Amazing! Go to class and you only need minimal work for an A
Jana Grekul is an amazing prof which is super important for a dry course like Soc 100. I skipped a few lectures which did affect me in the exams so if you want to do well make sure you go to most of them. She adds in funny stories and was super fun to learn from.
Always made every lecture extremely interesting and made you actually want to attend lectures. Tests are very reasonable, but some exam questions were based on in-class examples so it'd be wise to not skip. Overall one of my favorite professors I've had.
Amazing lecturer and it's great to listen to her talk. She is engaging and inspiring and her notes are very straightforward. The exams are non-cumulative MC and contains information from the textbook and in-class discussions and videos. Would definitely recommend and would take the class again and again.
Jana is one of the nicest profs I have ever had. Her tests were incredibly fair and her lectures were interesting and useful. I skimmed the textbook, and focused more on her lectures because she was really thorough. Go to class to hear her anecdotes and apply them to the concepts - it is really interesting!
Jana is a great prof. She goes at a good, slowish pace through her lectures which is good. She still gets through all of the info you need along with showing films - that are tested- but are usually interesting. She always has great personal stories that she tells the class. It always seemed to me like she cares about your learning intently.
I have never once had a prof who cares more than she does. She is truly a wonderful person with so much light and energy and good to give. She tests videos and class discussions but don't let that discourage you cause her lectures are always interesting. I will say some of her exam questions are a bit wonky, but an A is still definitely achievable
Very kind and engaging lecturer, made pretty boring material interesting. Exams are mostly textbook based. 2 midterms 1 final.
hardest marker ever. if you don't like group work/presenting in front of people avoid this class. Jana is super nice and awesome, but expectations are kind of unclear leaving way too much room for error. Also, favours crim students. So will be a little tougher if you aren't one.
Jana was an absolutely amazing professor. Her lectures were very inspiring and very interesting; it was very worthwhile to attend lecture. Online textbook is mandatory for practice questions. Not an easy A, but if you put in some work you'll do decent.
The classes are all based on the textbook. She encourages attendance by having some questions about anecdotes she tells during class. There are two midterms and a final, no papers. The midterms and final are not cumulative, and there are practice tests available online for this class. Very engaging and an awesome person
looooove jana. amazing lecturer. tests were easy peasy however i didn't study so i got a lower grade than i wanted. buy the textbook, she wrote it.
One of the few profs that you can tell truly cares about her students. She makes the lectures more interesting as it's always more discussion like than reading off slides. Tests are mostly textbook based, with a bit on videos/discussions in class. She said her goal was to make us see the world differently which she definitely achieved in my eyes!
Jana is the best. She is smart, funny, relatable, respectable, and such a badass. She is everything that a professor should be. I cannot recommend her enough. Her two midterms were fair, the final was just a bit harder. Buy the textbook and pay attention in class, and you'll get an easy A. Soc 100 with her was one of my favourite courses.
THIS CLASS IS NOT A GPA BOOSTER. Amazing professor tho, if you want an interesting class, take this prof, but don't take if you are looking for a GPA booster.
Jana's criminology background makes for awesome side discussions in Soc100. I will admit her tests weren't as brainless as I thought and you did have to actually read the textbook *gasp* for the A, but it's totally achievable. Class attendance is essential because she gives extra definitions and info not on the slides just to reward people who go.
Dr. Grekul is a great prof.! Took her graduate class in Criminal Justice in this term. A lot of readings, but all of them are very interesting and useful. She really develops analytical skills and critical thinking, her comments are always logical, advisable and helpful. She is very kind and helpful herself as well. Definitely recommend to take!
Jana is one of the most interesting/passionate profs I've ever had! She makes the material so much more interesting, however you will still need to use the text book since some material is not covered in class. She tests things she says in class and videos. The final was trickier than the midterms. Class isn't curved but it was not a hard class!
Amazing prof!!! Her tests are mainly textbook tested but you need to read the entire textbook and she occasionally tests from her lectures so to get an A, attendance is mandatory but a B is easy to get without attending. Such a funny and charismatic individual as well!!
Very enjoyable classes to attend, bright and bubbly personality and very caring prof. If you do the readings and pay attention in class it's an easy A, pretty easy to get away with not studying as she's quite thurough.
Dr. Grekul was an amazing professor for Sociology 100! Tests were based on her slides, examples given in class, and textbook material. There were two midterms and a final. As long as you supplement the slides with what she says in class as well as the readings, you'll do great in this class. She's a sweet woman, and loves to talk to students!
Prof. Grekul's course was a very basic SOC 100. She co-wrote the textbook she uses, which is helpful. She also obviously cares about social justice issues, which can be positive at times, but at times made her seem like a bit more of an activist than a teacher. It was a fine course. I learned some interesting things.
I am taking an individual study with Dr Grekul. She is the most amazing professor I have ever had. Clear feedback and fair marking. She also knows SO MUCH and you can have spectacular discussions with her. She is fabulous and I cannot recommend her enough. You would be lucky to have here, especially at a higher level course.
An amazing prof , she had great lectures and very strait forward exams
The overall class wasnt bad. She mainly read off PowerPoints that were the exact same as the textbook. If u dont go to class and read the textbook your fine. Theres only a few in class questions on the exams.
Jana really cares about her students and wants to see them be successful. She tests on in-class discussions, videos we watch, etc., but majority of the test questions come from the textbook. Jana was able to make somewhat dry material very interesting, and it was a fun class.
my favourite prof ive ever had. i LOVED listening to her talk, shes so smart, intriguing, kind, and passionate. i looked forward to going to this class and i looked forward to listening to her. she told you when you should write something down and told you exactly what youd be tested on. easy tests, amazing lectures, amazing prof
Jana is a great person. The first week of classes I was in awe of her. However, the lectures got a little dry as the course went on. I don't blame her, more so the material of the course. She is amazing to listen to, and her examples are great. But you definitely don't need to attend class to do really well.
Honestly best prof. She's super sweet and feels bad when content is boring but still tries to make it interesting. Class is based on anecdotes in class and tb readings. If you read the tb and do the practice midterms she posts its an easy A/B. Can't recommend enough!
Jana is a very caring, helpful, insightful, and bright prof. She always makes sure she doesn't offend any students and provides any and all material needed for you to do well in her class. If you pay attention to her in class examples, videos, and read the textbook word for word you will easily get an A in this class..
She is an awesome professor. Her lectures are interesting and the class setup is so good. 3 all Mc non cumulative exams. Chapters in the textbook are short and easy. Just read the textbook( especially the special boxes ), go to class for the videos and it's an easy A. 100/10 would recommend.
Jana is an amazing prof! The tests are non cumulative and are not incredibly difficult. Many questions on the tests are only on what was said in the lectures, and reading all parts of the textbook including the boxes will make the test questions really easy.
Shes an all around great prof! Read the textbook carefully and youll ace exams, her lectures were interesting/fun and dont skip because she tests lots from things or videos from classes that arent always on eclass.
She really is a great prof. Makes fairly uninteresting and boring material interesting. She's super cool to talk to one-on-one if you ever get the chance as well, and likes getting to know her students! I took SOC 100 with her three years ago, and she still said hi to me the other day when I walked by in HUB.
Grekul is a pure gem. She's so funny and her lectures are great. Side note: SOC 100 itself is pretty boring but she often finds ways to spice it up. THE TEXTBOOK IS RELIED ON SO HEAVILY SO YOU BETTER READ IT AND KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS.
Very intelligent and caring professor! She will cater to your needs and genuinely wants you to succeed!
Excellent lecturer and very friendly in and out of class. Wants to see students succeed and cares about sharing her love of the subject
Favourite prof from first year, Jana is incredibly passionate about sociology, particularly her sub-fields in criminology and gang research, and cares deeply about the wants and needs of the students. I'm minoring in sociology now, in large part because of Dr. Grekul. Soc 100 with Jana is one of the courses that balances being interesting and easy.
Lots of readings and a long paper (15-20 pages) but I learned a lot in the course and Jana really wants you to succeed if you put the effort in! Really great seminar instructor and works really hard to make sure you take something away from the course.
The midterms were decently fair and tested on mainly the slides in addition to in-class examples, videos and guest speakers. The final exam though was extremely difficult and a lot of people felt it was unfair. Otherwise, great professor, always open to talk and meet outside of class time and office hours. Genuinely passionate and a great person.
I would say go to class cause you'll do better on the midterms cause she does test from videos played in class but besides that don't focus on the slides you're better off studying from the textbook exams were pretty simple and straight foreword tho
Dr. Grekul is the nicest human being you will ever meet! She was extremely accessible outside of class and responded quickly even if I had questions late at night. Her lectures are well organized and if you read the textbook, it's a pretty easy class. Her exams are pretty straight-forward as well.
Dr. Grekul is a fantastic prof who does a great job at explaining the concepts in interesting and engaging ways. She is kind, caring, and genuinely wants her students to succeed. The material can be a bit dry at times, but Dr. Grekul always made the class bearable and worthwhile.
Sooo liberal its insane. Lectures are boring but you will do well if you study. I just did not like Jana as a person. She was full of herself and judgemental of student opinions that were different from her own. You can easily get a good grade but you'll have to cringe through some of her lecture comments. Conservatives beware!!
Jana did a great job informing students on what was to be tested for exams. She dropped quite a few hints as to what needed to be studied. She is very educated on her field and gives examples which sometimes tests on. Course weight consisted of 2 midterms and a final, all non-cumulative. Although our semester was cut short, I enjoyed her class.
Jana Grekul was one of the best profs I've ever had. She is really clear when explaining the concepts and she was so accessible outside of class if you needed help with anything.
Her lectures were amazing and really got you intrigued into the content. Only have 2 midterms and a final which are all non-cumulative. She really cares about her students and if you ever need help outside of class, she will make the time for you. The best prof I have had in University, one that is interesting, caring, adds her own flare to lecture
I have never rated a teacher so this shows a lot! She is the best teacher any student could ask for. Honestly if you complain that the class is difficult you aren't listening or putting in the work it really is an "easy A" class
Dr. Grekul was amazing. She responded to emails quickly and listened respectfully to the opinions of students in the class. Her sense of humour was top-notch, Usually, exams are quite straight forward - copy down what she says in class that are not on the slides, close read the textbook and it's an easy A. One of the best prof of my undergrad.
One of the best professors I've had in sociology, super kind and I think her lectures are engaging!
Dr Grekul and the TA Jillian, were the only reason I had any motivation to keep going through the semester - Dr. Grekul is so kind, super helpful, very accommodating, answers any and all of your questions, give such great feedback, and in general an amazing prof to have. So glad I took her class, definitely recommend
Dr Grekul is by far the nicest professor I have met at the University. Lots of content but she is an angel.
The sweetest & most accommodating prof by far! Exams are easy if you study well beforehand. Optional zoom meetings once a week, otherwise is asynchronous. Mark breakdown is 10% practice quiz (easy 100), 25% midterm 1, 30% midterm 2 and 35% non cumulative final. There is quite a few readings for this class but no textbook. Amazing prof overall!
Professor Grekul photocopied the readings so we wouldn't have to purchase the textbook. She was so understanding of our workload and did what she could to help us relieve stress. The class was so interesting, she was very engaging, so kind, and take her class any chance you get. She's beyond kind and it's easy to get a good grade.
Jana was a great prof, very accommodating and caring. Lectures were pre-recorded and so easy to get through, max 20 slides per module which is a week of content. Readings made up for the ease of lecture content though, you'll have to dedicate at least an hour or more of time per reading to ensure you get an A on the exams.
omg, the most caring most accommodating kindest professor ever. If you have the chance to take soc 225 take it with her, the lectures were super interesting. 12 modules ( included lectures and readings) readings were long but matched up with what the slides had. Exams were fair too. I definitely would recommend her !!
Probably the best Sociology professors I've had. If you get a chance to take Soc225 with her, do it. Very interesting. She has gone above and beyond to help her students through this new online learning format (even as she figures it out herself). So kind, genuinely passionate about her work. Made this semester a lot better - glad I took her class
I never cared about having a good professor before. As long I can get an A, I'm good. I never got the hype until now. Having a professor that actually cares about their students is a GAME CHANGER, and makes it so much easier to do well. I'm never putting up with cold, uncaring profs again, not when ones like Jana exist. I deserve better! So do you
INCREDIBLE Prof. Definitely my favourite in the social department. If you have an opportunity take a class with her. She's so lovely, really flexible with deadlines, and will help out the best of her ability. Classes are mainly discussing readings, so make sure you come, but no tests which is a bonus.
Jana is one of the most caring profs you will ever have, especially with online class she was so open to catering to her students. She is very experienced in the field of the topics she is teachings, which makes discussions so much more interesting! 100% would recommend taking a course with her if you ever have the opportunity.
Dr. Grekul is one of the kindest profs I have ever met. Her enthusiasm for criminology is prevalent, making you feel engaged with the material. Our course had optional zoom meetings bi-weekly; here, we could discuss amongst each other freely. I have never met a prof as dedicated and as supporting as her. Take her class if you can!
One of the kindest people. Appropriate workload for 400-level - be prepared to work hard but rated as easy b/c it's so enjoyable! Really took in student feedback and willing to hear other perspectives. One 40-50 min group presentation, critical media assignment, 12-15 page final paper, & submit one discussion question per week. Jana is amazing!
Tests specific and obscure names that appear once in the textbook. Tests extremely heavily on the textbook, told us that if you don't read the textbook you will fail the course. Textbook is extremely dense and packed with a crazy amount of SPECIFIC statistics that you WILL BE TESTED ON. Will test on random statistics that seem irrelevant! Beware!
The first midterm was slightly difficult relying heavily on specific details in the textbook but Jana did not hesitate to adjust grades accordingly and modify the next midterm when she received feedback about it. The textbook is required for the course but her slides are very detailed and closely follows it. She is very caring of her students!
Jana Grekul is AMAZING. She is awesome to listen to in lecture and she points out a lot of real life issues. She is very interested in the topics she lectures and it comes through. Her tests are non cumulative and fairly easy. READ THE TEXTBOOK. I highly recommend anyone who can to take SOC225 with her!
Very amazing awesome wonderful course id recommend to anyone interested in crim. Jana takes an empathetic dive into the justice system and her history working in the field provides a really rich eye opening experience. She keeps her lectures engaging despite tough subject matter and engages with students.
The class is very textbook heavy, but she does go over the main topics in class and shows lots of videos that relate to the topics to help you better understand. She is very sweet and you can tell she cares about her students. Made the first midterm too hard but immediately fixed it for the second midterm and final. A great prof!
Jana is amazing! She is so kind and clearly cares about her students and her lectures are engaging. The course matter is interesting but there is quite a bit of textbook reading if you want to do well on the midterms
Very engaging classes and she is super funny. Lots of info. Videos watched in class, textbook readings and some stuff she talks about in class are included in exams.
Jana was lovely and super passionate about sociology. Her lectures were always interesting, but she let too many people share. It was beyond asking questions, people would begin telling random stories and take up class time. On average, we maybe got through 7 slides in an 80 minutes class. She tests on slides, textbook and personal stories.
Jana is a wonderful lecturer and the discussions we had in class were eye opening. A very straightforward course overall, and honestly, would be a lot more boring if it weren't for Jana. She is very engaged and entertaining and is passionate about what she teaches. Reading the textbook and listening during lectures is all you really need.
Jana is clearly very passionate about the field, but it feels like she hasn't dug very deep into her own biases as a white, cisgender, middle class, childless woman. Exams are multiple choice and based on lecture and textbook material. Attendance is not mandatory, but expect a few "what was discussed in this class/textbook/anecdote" Q's on exams.
Amazing professor very driven and passionate
Jana was very nice but lacked the ability to take control of her lectures. She very often let students share personal anecdotes that offered little to no relation to the topics discussed. She also used all her slide information and examples directly from the textbook.
Jana is super nice and I found her lectures to make what is honestly an incredibly boring course into one that's at least bearable. Three tests make up your grade, and the final isn't cumulative which is nice. Personally I prefer papers/smaller grade boosting assignments but if you're into multiple choice exams you'll love this class.
Jana is a very nice prof. compared to most. Personally, her encouragement of discussions among students helped me understand certain topics but there r times where student discussion gets derailed & eats up precious lecture time. Her views r definitely liberal & some topics are discussed one-sidedly if not for student input. All tests noncumulative
I took SOC100 with Jana, and she was an incredibly engaging and thoughtful prof. While some of the concepts of this course were dull, she always tried to encourage discussion and tie-in current social issues. A word of warning, the exams cover specific material only covered in lecture, and the final was notably more difficult than the midterms.
She was a very sweet lady and always tried doing a good job at making her lectures interesting. A word of advice though is to not skip lectures because most of the questions on her tests are discussions we talked about in class.
