OMG, she is the nicest little southern bell, BUT she is not a good teacher. She never reviews, she is unclear on what she wants to know and how indepth to know the material. I didn't even finish the course. My advice don't take her class!!!!!!!!!!
so she knows her stuff, so A+ to her. but a wall could teach me biochem better than her! that class is just for bio kids to get a minor in chem, yet she likes to teach like it's grad. level stuff. i must have missed GRE on her exams b/c i barely made a passing grade and i did great in O-chem. nice prof-horrible teacher. avoid her at all costs!
Super nice, sweet, funny prof. Her labs are great, but quizes difficult if you don't understand. If you understand chem, a little take her it's worth it. SHe is a wonderful prof.
SHE IS THE DEVIL IN DISGUISE! HER TESTS ARE SO HARD! DO NOT TAKE HER...she thinks we are rocket scientists in a Chem 2 class...CRAZY! And she is soooooo UNCLEAR about what she wants. And she makes the class extremly boring cuz she has powerpoints...she literally reminds me of the teacher from charlie brown...What ever you do, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
she thinks everyone has a phd in chemistry. her test are extremely hard and she gives you the study guide the class before. she a geek laughs at her own jokes i dont no recommend her she suckss
Her test are very hard! The study guides don't help either. She will help you during office hours. I had her for lecture and lab and I got an A in lab which I needed to help my lecture grade! Go to class b/c she has "beat the bells" and they are extra credit and unannounced!
Just having a PHd doesn't automatically make you a good teacher. A good example of that, is this prof. She definitly lets you know what your supposed have learned semesters ago. I still haven't seen anything knew. If you like to memorize useless info and being reminded of what you used to know, then take this prof.
She is horrible! All she says is Um Umm UMMMM. She doesnt know how to answer questions and her tests are always too long to finish. She is such a bad teacher !!!! Dont take her!!!
Quite possibly the worst professor at IUP. I am a senior and I've never experienced ANYONE like her. Is so unclear and seems really unsure about everything she says, which makes the students not trust her. Extremely difficult/long tests. And her study guides basically tell you to memorize the entire chapter. DON'T TAKE HER!!!!!!!!
Although she gets bad reviews for class, do not hesitate to take her for lab. She's very helpful and not too hard of a grader.
The only things you need to know about Villemain which you will hear again and again from anyone who's had her: 1) nice lady who loves her subject and is brilliant 2) can't teach
These people who bomb Biochemistry decide it must be Dr. V's fault - that she can't teach; and not that they didn't study enough, or just can't learn the material. If you are a serious student, who wants to learn, take her - you will. If you want a Biochem class you can skate through; don't.
Should not be teaching. She needs to move to a research school where she does not have to teach students. Ridiculously unorganized and procrastinates until the extreme last minute. Knows her stuff and assumes that you do too (without teaching you anything). Avoid if possible.
She is a horrible prof. She tries to write her own labs, but half the time they are incomplete. she says she wants us to learn the instruments, but then never teaches them. gets mad at you when you need to leave the lab at the time the lab ends, she expects you to stay 20-70 minutes over if needed...
Very helpful in lab!
She gives bonus points in class and has study sessions before tests. Helps you if you go to her office hours. A tough class, but you can get a good grade if you work hard and go to class.
Messes up alot on her own work
very nice woman, but she makes no sense at all. she taught me nothing and her notes are pointless because she doesn't give enough time to copy them. to sum it all up just don't take her
Dr. V tries really hard to help students and will always help you during office hours. She posts all her notes and puts all the homework online.
Chemistry is really hard :( but I feel that Dr. Villemain is fair and gives extra credit activities in class
She seems to try hard but she uses words that no one understands making the material even harder than it is. she makes alot of mistakes with tests and notes confusing alot of people. i would not recommend taking her.
she's really nice and is very helpful. do your work, go to class, and do the online quizzes and you'll be fine. there's xtra credit in class
only go to class to get the extra credit other than that she isn't a very good prof. she goes too slow and if you only go by lecture you will fail. READ THE BOOK, i have one of the highest grades in there right now and that is the only way I'm doing well. she does explain reactions extremely well though. moodle quizzes and homework weekly.
Villemain garners very polarizing opinions it seems...students either like her or they don't. I fall into the former category. While some aspects of her teaching could maybe be smoothed out, she is definitely a capable professor and I learned a lot from her. The one thing I'll say is that her exams can gut you; you need to commit a lot of time.
She's the nicest lady but is very unorganized. Your best bet is to follow along with the PowerPoints she posts online and write down extra notes that she says during class and also take advantage of the tutoring and SI sessions especially!
She is an extremelynce teacher and I personally thought the class was easy, especially because you really never had to attend class.
I had her for lab and thought she was a very good lab professor. She's a very nice person who is easy to communicate with and always available to help when needed. Her grading is fair. All of her quizzes were online with an in-class final. I recommend her as a lab professor!!
Dr. Villemain was so accessible and dedicated so much time. It was challenging, but I feel that I actually learned, not memorized the material because of this.
She's awesome! (I had her in a lab) I'm taking her again next semester for Chem 102. Super nice and will explain anything to you if you ask her to.
I am taking her right now. Class is not easy, but it is not supposed to be. She knows her stuff, and helps. Posts her lectures, and then uses them. She's a solid professor.
HORRIBLE TEACHER,!!
I really liked how helpful she was and how everything was explained things on the board at the beginning. She will literally help you with ANY question!
I got a B in her course, but she can't teach. I spent the entire semester reading the chapters and teaching myself the material. She is very boring because she just drones on. She is nice and will try to help you, but she just can't teach. she writes tests that should take about 2.5 hours to finish but expects you to finish it in a 75 minute class
Dr. V was a great lab teacher. I usually didn't understand what she was teaching, but she would always answer our questions and help us figure it out. Without her i would've been screwed in lab.
Really good lab teacher - very helpful. Do the labs, complete the work, get an A.
My Lab teacher. I got an A. She made lab bearable. That's saying something.
Biochem. I enjoyed the class.
I had her for Chem 102 lecture, and it was the hardest class I've taken. The lectures are long, boring, and barely helpful. Even with going to the tutoring 2x a week I still struggled to pass the class. Exams are NOTHING like what she teaches in class and she never curves them.
Dont take her. She is not enthusiastic about the material, she trails off , it is hard to stay focused, doesn't give enough examples, find someone better.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. Her tests are too long and she pulls questions out of the air. She does not pull them from the book. Many students went to her office for help only for her to say she was too busy and she sent them away. DO NOT take her. I will be lucky if i can get a B in the class considering I averaged low Cs.
I could always get help from Dr. Villemain both in her office and after class. She went over problems from the homework in class and put problems from the homework on tests. There were alot of kids who didn't come to class and just got information from Moodle since all the notes were online. There was extra credit for attending seminars.
This woman is probably the sweetest lady I've ever met, but she is a horrible lecture hall teacher. She moves too quickly, she doesn't explain thoroughly, she puts things on the exams that were either barely covered, or hadn't been covered at all. Although, she IS a pretty good lab professor. DO NOT take her for your lecture.
I had Dr. Villemain for CHEM 101 and 102 labs and 102 lecture. If you show up to lab and do the work, you will do fine and should get an A. Lab quizzes can be tricky though. I personally always dozed off during lecture but I went to office hours and when I sit one on one with her she is EXTREMELY helpful. Very enthusiastic teacher. Would recommend.
Dr. Villemain was one of the best professors I have ever had. She is very passionate about the subject and will do everything in her power to help you learn and succeed!
The amount of information she presents is unbearable. Yes, she gives us resources, but there is SO much information, you don't know where to begin. I've gone to her for help a few times and I still did poorly on the all the exams. I have never felt so discouraged by a course.
She is a nice person, but not a good professor. Be prepared to read the book to get the majority of your information. The volume of material she wants you to know in a given time frame is very demanding. I'm a good student and normally get great grades, but I've been averaging C's on her exams... which is still better than a lot of classmates
For the love of all that is holy, do not take Dr. Villemain. I know biochemistry is a difficult course but this specific class was ridiculous. She is very unorganized and her study guides are written like thought-vomit. Prepare to spend all of your time watching YouTube videos. American education at its finest ;)
Sweet lady. Gives in-class "quizzes" but goes over answers before collecting. You only need to study lecture notes, but the book helps with comprehension. Unfortunately, assigns homework and online quizzes the night before the tests/final, and she's disorganized (confusing grammar errors on tests, misses highlighting answers on answer keys, etc.)
She helped me 24/7 with office hours, and she had review sessions before every exam. She is a little disorganized but she's a great lab and lecture teacher. I would take her again if I could.
This professor was very difficult to understand, and was always a hot mess when it comes to organization. She rambles and does not provide very clear explanations to questions. I would not recommend this professor.
Dr. Villemain is very much lecture heavy. In the class, all she does is read from a powerpoint and will have you copy the notes down. If you are a visual learner or chemistry is just not a class your good at she might not be the teacher for you. She will show you examples of problems but basically just talk to the board and doesn't really explain.
Do not take this class she is the most disorganized professor ever. Her lectures are all over the place and her syllabus is a joke. This class stressed everyone out so much because no one ever knew what was on the exam. The class average on every exam so far has been a D or below and she doesn't do anything to help us do better.
Good person, but not a good prof. She goes fast through all of the slides and hardly explains anything. I feel like she is so smart that she doesn't know how to explain/teach the material to the students. Do not take her!!!
Very nice women but horrible prof. She goes over things so fast and rambles so much you do not learn or retain info. Tests are difficult. Go to SI whenever you can. Her syllabus does not match how her class goes. Does not give any info on what to expect on the final. Take someone more organized.
Horrible. I have never taken a such disorginized, unhelpful teacher. She expects you to know every little detail about the topics in the chapter but only teacher you the very minimum of the topic. Exams are short answers, usually so long you might not even finish, which she doesnt care if you dont. Do not take her, first C Ive ever gotten.
Homework was on Sapling (which cost $30). Overall not bad if you have a decent background in organic chemistry and are willing to put in time reading notes and reading the chapters which go along with class.
Dr. Villemain is a very nice lady, however, her lab quizzes can be challenging. If you want to succeed you should read the current and previous lab in detail. The final is based on old lab quizzes so study those and you'll succeed!
Dr. Villemain is the sweetest lady and truly cares about her students, however- She does not give clear guidelines for what will be on exams, she didn't follow our syllabus, and shes difficult to listen to in lecture. I wish that I could recommend her because shes so nice but her class was difficult. My SI instructor was my saving grace
Go to her office hours! She will answer any question and help you with anything - even after you don't have her class. The homework is on Sapling which can be annoying, but she allows you to use a notecard on all exams and has review sessions for every exam pl plus extra credit. I thought Dr. Villemain was very helpful, but I still needed SI.
Terrible. Her exams were awful; always went past class time so had to scramble to finish as most of the class is still there. Only thing that saved my grade was the paper. Powerpoints are really text heavy and she just reads off of them. She has a hard time answering questions. Class was only hard because she made it terrible.
I had her for lab and she's really easy to talk to and cares about her students and their grades. She helped me so much on lab reports and would answer any question in class. I would definitely recommend her!
Honestly, Villemain is the worst professor I've ever had. She reads straight off her PowerPoints and just awkwardly giggles to the class. She expects you to basically know everything without really teaching it. Tests are so long people have to stay after class just to finish. She should never have become a professor
Dr. Villemain is a very nice lady who really cares about students and biochemistry. She will help you even outside of office hours. Her tests are challenging but questions sometimes come from the book or old tests and there are in-class bonus questions sometimes which you can get help on from other students. Doesnt take attendance.
She's good for lab. She explains things and will help you with any question. She also helped me alot with questions in her office. I would definitely recommend her for lab.
Dr. V expects you to work. If you do, you will learn things to didn't expect. Studying for a test coming up & just realized I actually understand some biochemistry. Lots of classes I've had, I get the grade, but not any knowledge I can point to. Not hers.
She takes lab seriously and actually teaches. There are posts here from students who are obviously just mad that they didn't do well or that Dr. Villemain actually expected something out of them. If you want to learn, take her. If you just want a grade you should probably not.
Biochem is a hard class as it is, and then trying to learn online made it worse. I reached out for help multiple times and she did not give me any. She's very nice but an awful teacher. She reads directly off the slides and does not show any examples of how to do anything. I watched hours of youtube and still failed the exams.
I had Dr. Villemain for lab during Covid, which was hybrid. She was not the best at explaining things & often made the labs seem way harder than they were. We did one week in person lab then the following week online. She had one quiz a week which were usually extremely in depth than the lab ever went. Final lab quiz was HARD & she gave no notice.
I am not kidding, do not take biochem with her at IUP. Horrible prof, does not teach material, exam questions are a joke. Study for hours, days, weeks and you still will get a bad exam grade. Mental health declined because of this class. Absolutely miserable. Pathetic course. She doesn't help you, Take biochem through another school, please.
this was by far the worst class I took at iup. as a senior I took it in my last semester and it made my experience awful. I normally enjoy my science courses, I cannot say the same for this class. When students asked questions she came back with smart responses & belittled you. Its sad that this course has to be taught this way. Exams were a joke.
This class was online (Zoom) due to Covid-19, but most lectures were recorded. Lectures felt rushed, but Dr. Villemain is great during office hours and had in-class examples which were posted with answers later. Tough exams, but easy extra credit case studies were given with each exam. Homework was graded by completion so helped bump my grade.
Dr. Villemain is the worst professor I've had at IUP. The tests were unreasonably hard and her lectures will leave you confused and somehow less knowledgeable of biochemistry. I learned nothing from this class so it is an understatement to say that you should avoid taking her.
I enjoyed the class and thought it was great for studying for the MCAT. Dr. Villemain gave chances for extra points. Class was online at 8 a.m. lots skipped class....
One of the worst professors Ive had at IUP. She is very nice and accessible for office hours, but youll leave more confused. Exams are impossible and she is very unclear about what she wants you to learn. Take Biochem elsewhere
This is definitely a hard class, but so far exams are fair and given on a long class day so you have plenty of time to finish. There's also homework and case studies that can help your grade too.
Interesting class that connects to alot of other classes. Dr. Villemain is really helpful one-on-one in office hours and give bonus points.
She's a nice person but so annoying to have as a lab instructor. She doesn't grade things quickly and uploads prelabs only a few days before they're due, just generally inconveniences students bc she's lazy or forgetful. Overall you kind of get the idea that she doesn't really care about the class or the student's experience.
Dr. Villemain is one of the sweetest professors I have taken at IUP. The only critique I have is that grading is very slow but I know she has more to worry about than this lab. She responds to emails quickly and is helpful. She also always talks to students during the lab to connect with them more. I look forward to taking her for biochem!
She is a horrible lab teacher, she is not helpful in labs, and when you ask questions you get more confused. Her grading is so hard and not clear what she wants for lab reports. She grades so slow, you don't get anything back until the end of the semester. When emailing she makes you feel guilty when she's busy. Would never take a class with her.
She emailed us 20 minutes before the lab started to tell us we wouldn't have a review for the final and that she would not be there due to 'illness'. She doesn't upload prefabs until a few days before the lab, and good luck getting it back graded in a good amount of time. She overall gives the impression she is lazy and does not care.
Lab class. Interesting. Easy A
my only complaint really is that the online course access is $100 although you use it for homework and can use it for practice. Lectures go fast, you pick up right where you left off from chem 103 so if you didn't understand it Good luck. She also correlates with Dr. Jain so you'll do better if you took her for chem 103. Attendance isn't mandatory
she gives the worse feedback. she has told me in class that i did something correctly then marked it wrong when she graded it. if possible try and take your lab with ash
Dr. Villemain is a good person, but not a good professor. I've noticed this theme throughout the entire department of chemistry. Instead of taking the time to teach you, it is assumed that you know the subject of the class already. She never gave clear directions on homework and activities she assigned and expected these to be done without guidance
I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. It was not easy but I learned a lot.
She is a super sweet person, but a HORRIBLE teacher. You can ask her questions, but half the time she won't know the answer. She is extremely unhelpful and I would never take her again. For not actually teaching, explaining or helping, she is extremely tough on grading for not offering the help when a student asks for it. Worst lab I've ever taken.
10/10 do NOT recommend. Nice person but a terrible teacher. Take Dr. M for the course... I've heard better things about him and wish I took him instead. Save yourself from having 10 point quizzes every week that are very difficult, HW every week that doesn't help and 4 lengthy exams that are so difficult it's unreal. Sign in sheet too. AVOID TAKING
Dr. Villemain is a nice professor. However, she is very nit-picky when it comes to grading. Labs are super easy as long as you're paying attention and have a lab manual and she doesn't really bother you while you're working. She is a slow-grader and does not get labs back in enough time for you to review your mistakes.
She doesn't upload grades online. When you get stuck and ask questions, she often will just confuse you more. She expects you to already know how to do many of the things for the lab. She picks out seemly random things to deduct points for and the criteria seems to change weekly.
Dr. Villemain will answer any question and helps alot during lab. She really cares about students and is wants you to succeed.
I would not take this class ever again. There is semi understandable content but the exams are a heavy mess. She thinks that her students should basically have the same knowledge as her. Low class average for exams to her means we do not study.
Villemain is a very nice lady; however I do not feel she is very helpful during labs. After asking her questions, I end up more confused. There have been multiple times she told me how to do something, so I would do it that way and she would mark it wrong when she grades. Luckily the lab was pretty easy so it didnt matter too much.
Sweet person, bad professor. Very unclear about what we should know. Exam averages always low and she assumed we didn't study and blamed it on us. Shot down feedback we gave her by saying "It's easy for me why don't you know it". Went to her office hours several times and she viewed my learning disability as an excuse and told me to "just relax".
I would never recommend this professor even if you're amazing at chemistry. Extremely condescending and talks so much but helps so little. Nitpicks SO much with grading. Everyone in the group could have the same thing written down and we all get different grades. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take this woman for ANY class, & if you do, good luck.
I would never take her class again. She does not explain things well at all and when you have a question she asks if you know what you did wrong. On prelabs, all of your group members could have the EXACT same answers written down and everyone will get a very different score. Very hard to talk to so you can receive extra help.
