An opinionated prof with interesting things to say. A great lecturer.
She's really clear, and I enjoy going to her lectures.
Passionate, interesting and sexy; one of Carleton's best!
Tall, Slim, Blonde... and a good prof too!
Meh.. she's alright.. way too full of herself.. and spends too much indian crap
smart and funny - top law prof
talks a bit too fast, but gives a lot of examples

talks super fast, but breaks up long lectures with humor

crazy communist hippie, hot girls in class though
the worst prof...she is like a speed talker or somthing...no clue what she says

Left wing maxist feminist, which is really cool. her exams are extremely difficult and uses her lectures a political soap box.
You know their is a feminist law class but hello this is law not your personal male bashing time.
She's really not that bad. I mean, the material isn't exactly what I'd consider interesting. And hey, she makes fun of that crazy pseudo-Marxist guy that always spews out uninformed crap.
Entertaining lecturer. She's very knowledgable. She does speak a bit fast, though. A three hour lecture probably takes her 15 minutes.
Very helpful, speaks quickly, but slows down or repeats things when asked. If you listen carefully, she repeats herself three times on each subject, makes it easier to understand.
If she could stop ranting about the evils of white males, then maybe it would be interesting. Her opinions are humourous not because she is funny but because they are so out of date and not based reality. Too biased to be fair, so kiss ass for the essay.
she's not hot, and her t.a. is a mook
make use of your TA. although jane doen'st directly help, thats what the TA are there for and they really do help. they like to see you are interested in your grades, so just go to get a better mark if nothin else.
she talks way too fast and truly doesn't care about the well being of her stidents! She is extremely intelligent and knows what shes talking about, and dresses real well

This professor is excellent. She is funny and comprehensible. Most people think that she speaks too quickly but if they took the time to listen they would realize that she repeats herself at least twice so that the material can be understood.
Interesting class. Knowledgeable. Talks really, really fast. Left perspective. I'd recommend her.
Okay so the class isn't too easy but she is phenomenal and knowledgable totally smart and an amazing woman. She is the epitome of the sucessful sexy intelligent woman. Her lectures always keep me awake!
Enough about Indians and women. The course was meant to be about law. She doesn't seem to shy away from employing the flawed logic that only a bleeding-heart could get away unchallenged with. She is intelligent, but far too political. Easy course.
she's fair and she puts up with first year studednts
i took this 3 years ago and even now she is phenomenal. she's sexy, intelligent, smart, has great fashion sense. she isn't afraid to be opinionated and introduces many first years to think critically about social issues. incredible woman in law
Loved the course and the professor, excellent role model for first year law students, speaks her mind and teaches us that it is good to have opinons and act on them

This teacher is okay in the lectures (despite going to fast) but then her exams are KILLER!!! Half the class failed our first exam, and she didn't curb the marks. You have to read and go to all the lectures to do okay. Readings are boring. Sexy what?!
She is very left wing, and certainly drives her issues home.
great!
Talks too fast, but has a great sense of humour. Her class is awesome.

She is very communicates the course material in and easy going and engaging manner. As a result it is easier to understand, retain, and apply. It is by far one of, if not the, best classes I've attended in my university career.
She's great! Goes a little fast in the lectures but besides that no complaints. She's really interesting and fun to watch. All you need is really good notes from her lectures and your all set.
Very interesting way of teaching.
An excellent prof, especially for first years. Her lectures go too fast but that isn't a problem unless you have a lazy ass head T/A (shakes fist) who doesn't put them up on the internet before the lecture.
Final was difficult, hard to understand her points sometimes because she just keeps talking and talking, but the essays we wrote were interesting and she was overall a good prof for first year law.
ok, she's nice but speaks way too fast!!!!very hard to take good notes plus she goes on and on so it hard to know what u should write down. she is very nice and funny but the class is killer especially exams. essays were fairly easy
she speaks so fast you cant get anything down...
shes pretty cool

She is fun and keeps you awake on a Monday morning, so I look forward to going to every class! Lectures definitely do go very fast, so you can miss information easily. However, I don't think it's impossible to get down what she says. And, yes, she has great fashion sense.
Speaks way too fast, but I generally enjoyed the class. You definitely need clear notes which I find difficult because she is SUPER fast. Made the lectures interesting with her jokes. Love the outfits!
Smart and witty. Very repetitive. Likes to flip her hair:P
t.a. is a jerk from what i hear. but she is really helpful trust me
Great prof, not always easy but she's sharp and she makes sure we know our stuff, plus she's really nice and helpful in person
She's a hottie. What can I say. Good teacher, good material. BOOYA!
Very smart, very funny, tough, social conscience, politically aware, not a bird teacher, but you'll really get something out of it and she's very helpful. Makes me want to take more law courses. Great fashion sense, great looking, but want to be on her side, not on the other guy's!
she talks way too fast. her "jokes" are either rude or just not funny. she tries to hard yet fails.
Very hard first exam. Designed to weed out students.
Good Prof, but first exam was a killer. Definatly a weed out process for those who do not seriously want to go into law. NOT A BIRD COURSE.
awesome professor
shes smart and quick and a great prof if you actually want to learn something. she made the first exam a killer but since then its been a fair course.. love the jokes!
Good prof, very interesting, very qualified, interesting lectures, but whoa killer mc exams. The fact that shes sexy also helps people get through the class (boys at least)
this was a really good course. Like others have said, the first exam was hard but the rest of the class was pretty easy. I loved the class and her humour helped my interest level!!
Was not impressed that she left the grading of final papers to a very young TA - who was overwhelmed and not capable of the job. Lectures were okay, lots of substitutes, she is not often available and when she is, can be rude.
An average class. Her good sense of humour is what keeps the lecture flowing (occasionally). Law has a lot to offer, Dickson explains the materials well. She's often out in the court, quite a number of substitute. Not a boring class, no.
I'm in second year, and I really miss her lectures and outfits. The class itself is a joke - that's what you get in an intro class, not that I mind that it's easy - but she is a one entertaining lady! You won't fall asleep in her class.

Jane is tough, but really intelligent.
Class was a complete joke. Prof is slightly left of Marx himself. Jack Layton would feel like a Conservative in this class. Words of advice, drop the course. The prof is a nut.

What a fox!! All first year classes should be taught by sexy ladies, it would help with the boredom factor. Some of her anti establishment views were a little hard to swallow though.
Extremely intelligent and this makes her hard to follow because it's almost as though she expects you to know half of it allready. Tough course but interesting. Essays were good exams were short so overall I recommend this prof to anyone taking intro to law.
She is a pretty good lecturer, but the T.A.s in this first year class are a joke. They marked way too hard on the long answer exams in the course. I think when I took this course the class average on the first exam was 33%. At the end of the year they had to change the format of the exams to multipul choice and i believe this is due to T.A. marking
I really liked her! She was funny and she knew what she was talking about. Not too bad to look at either! I think she wore a different outfit every class. She actually seems to care about students as well. The TA groups are an absolute waste of time though!
Extremly bright lecturer. However, she talks very fast so its hard to write most of it down. I suggest to follow the outlines if your in it next year. And READ the texts, cause you'll fall behind. Don't even bother with the T.A's, waste of time..
LOVED HER!! She was an awesome prof, very entertaining, good jokes, and awesome to go for help. If you talk to her, she will tell you exactly what she is looking for essay-wise. Be sure to attend her lectures, they are the most important thing and will be heavily relied on in the exam. Too bad she's going to be gone for the next 2 years!!
Jane is smart and definately knows her material, but her exams are quite tough for a first year class. I think many of the questions are ambiguous. I took this class at the same time as 2 second year LAWS classes and got a better mark in both of them. Attend the lectures and read the material or she'll catch you.
A very tough course for an intro, but a decent prof.
Pretty good prof, her biting sarcasm was entertaining. Exams aren't too difficult, but you must know what you're doing. Fairly approachable, and knows what she's doing. Good class.
Very hard to grasp concepts, she moves at a fast pace.
She is a really great prof and knows what she is talking about .. but because she was a lawyer she speaks in jargon and for a first year class thats a little tough to follow sometimes. Especially for those of us who just took the class out of interest not necessity.
Good prof
Tough class, she is a hard marker for the essays!
Loved her...though she speaks extremely fast when drinking coffee :D
Had her for first year law and 4th year Aboriginal Criminal Justice. Only take her fourth year class if you are dedicated. She is probably the best professor at Carleton, but only if you use her as a resource. Loves it when you come to visit her office and seek out help: that's what she is paid for. Not afraid to fail you if you are dumb.
very advanced teaching style for a first year class; speaks almost overly fast can be hard to take notes; covers material not in the text lecture attendance is MANDATORY; exoects a lot from students; has a rep for being hard but strong students will manage I finished with an A; will learn LOTS; great prof but might not be best choice for high GPA
This Prof is amazing. She addresses all core concepts. Given the students the tools necessary to fair well in the course.
If you are passionate about the subject of law, you will not be disappointed. She gives amazing lectures full of insight and experience. Her exams are all MC, but they're tricky! Make sure you know your stuff and go to every lecture. You have to earn your A in this course, but it's worth it.
Good looking. Has attitude. Speaks clearly. MC final was pretty hard apparantly - I expected an A and was very disappointed with a B in the course. She's very liberal and should keep her political views to herself.
hard to understand sometimes with exhausting lectures and language, but highly interesting and definitely hot.
Worst. Exam. Ever. Covered nothing in the lectures save one class. Wow.
Exam was impossible.
Personable and a great lecturer. You really have to know the material to do well - she doesn't give "bird" courses. I've had her twice and was happy to see her name on my schedule the second time around. She's way more engaged than most profs in my experience.
good proof at teaching the material in lecture, only problem is the exam did not cover the material very much. One question out of sixty for cases, with many odd feminists and native questions thrown in. Wrote an exam with the desire to fail as many people as people. BEWARE!
Talks fast and uses a lot of words to explain simple ideas. Do not take her 1000 class purely out of interest for law as you won't learn the basics - it's far more advanced than that. I did well on the exam but I might as well have failed, I have no idea where the content came from. She's interesting to listen to but the content is questionable.
COMPLETELY MISGUIDED the CLASS for the EXAM. She stated that understanding lecture material would be reason for a passing grade. However she wrote the exam POORLY it was NOT Straight Forward. It did cover the required readings but the elements she chose to test were RIDICULOUS. Of all sections Jane's class gets the lowest grade for laws 1000.
Do the readings, watch the classes and you'll be ok. Focus on the Nelson and Vago book.
Tends to repeat herself in lectures. "One to another" Read Nelson and Vago! VOD Class is pretty good because you can sit down and take her in all in one dose. Exams are tricky. Key is doing good on the assignments. Personally, will try and avoid having her as a prof for the rest of my days at Carleton. Not a general interest Class.
Definitely designs hard exams. A first year law class should not be this hard as she makes it. Unless you really want to work hard, I advise you to not take this class with her!
Comments reflect understanding that this course/most is(are)based on the bell curve-look at the numbers/enrollment and see effort does not equal merit- An intro law should tell you about the real system-engage her and research Maritime Admiralty Law and Uniform Commercial Code. That is the secret... they know but will not tell you// force them to.
I don't recommend Jane. She is very difficult when designing the exams. Her lectures are boring. She is not helpful or available for help, in the sense that she sends you straight to your TA when in need. Numerous people went to the board complaining about her. She is 1 of the authors of the dull textbook she makes you buy so that she can profit.
Do not recommend, very difficult/high expectations for exams! Studied so hard to recieve an okay grade, frustrating!
Do everything you can to avoid this prof!!!! She is highly demanding and a very poor teacher. I got a B+ in this course, but 97% on writing assignments. Refused to discuss exam results- "scantron does not lie". Exams were awful and many questions were convoluted. Totally regret my year with her! Other section Profs are much better!!!
Did not enjoy the class nor the prof. Found the lectures to be very feminist, left-wing and terribly politically motivated. Not sure what class I was in...class lectures not terribly applicable to exam. Readings important. Took a potentially simple 1st year course and made it difficult
I don't care what people say about this prof. I absolutely love her. She clear, witty, and knows what she's talking about. Of course her classes are hard, she's teaching Law, which is difficult and kind of dry in the first place. If you do the readings and go to class you'll probably do fine. She hates webCT which isn't very helpful. Good prof.
Jane is an excellent professor. She is hardcore and gets to the point. If you go visit her during her office hours to discuss the lecture she is very approving and helpful. Her lectures are quite interesting and she is witty and funny. 100% recommend her as a prof.
I've noticed that those who dislike her are probably the right-wing type who can't stand to hear views which contradict their own. Jane is an amazing prof. Her lectures are to-the-point and sometimes quite humourous, too. There is a lot of reading to do, and she does expect a lot, but it's university, get used to it.
amazing prof! lectures are interesting and she's very funny. the assignments were relevant and her exams are a gift from the exam Gods. this class made me realize i really do love law and should keep it as my major, highly recommend this to everyone!!
Jane is a great prof. her expectations are clear and assignments are relevant to the text and class lectures. She's definately has a passion for law. She cares about her students and is very approachable. Textbook readings are a cornerstone of her lectures and courses though.
For your dear life, do not take a pre-recorded class with her. She is completely absent and does not even know something as simple as the assignment due date. She has clearly removed herself from the responsibility of being a prof since the V-Section course was pre-recorded. Her expectations are UNCLEAR. NO rubric for assignments until after DUE?
Great prof! Interesting and clear. She states expectations clearly at the beginning and if people are surprised then they did not listen properly. Biases are also normal in university classes, so this does not bother me. I will definitely look to take another one of her classes.
Terrible experience. Invested a large amount of time in this class and might as well have done nothing. Exams were impossible and assignments were excruciating. Taking PASS was of benefit as there seemd to be no connection between PASS and the actual class. Only class I have taken that I regret in 3 years. Not worth the grief.
I love this prof - she provided great examples, and made the class interesting by presenting different cases. I would pay really close attention to her lectures, just because a lot of what she discusses turned up on thee exam. I took the vod class and typed a lot of notes on what she said and ended up with an 80% on my exam. Def, recommend her!
Difficult exams, but passable. Not difficult assignments.
I found this class incredibly frustrating. Exams had little to do with the lectures and PASS was misguiding, I wish the PASS TA could have written the exam! I would never take any course with this prof again. Big mistake, she is terrible.
Her classes and Tutorial sessions are useless. Just read the readings and follow her exam recaps. shes very rude too i find not approachable
Her exams are somewhat difficult need to study in order to do well. Midterm & Final are strictly based off of lecture slides so the textbook isn't necessary to buy. Assignments are easy if anything there a grade booster. She is very approachable and friendly professor.
Although she says that exams are based primarily on lectures this was not the case. I barely scraped through after investing a lot of work. If PASS had been the evaluation I would have done brilliantly! Don't waste your time with PASS, it will just give you false confidence,,better still, avoid this prof altogether!!
Very knowledgeable but not good at teaching the material, talks very fast and has high expectations for 1st year students, wouldn't recommend.
Good Prof to learn from during lectures, but very bad when it comes to exams, and trying to communicate with. Not very helpful at all. Makes lectures very clear and easy to understand and reinforces by reviewing from where she left off. Multiple Choice exams, it is more luck than brain for the exams.
She is awesome. I loved her class. I would definitely recommend her to anyone. I had her for first year law, and I loved it.
she was a great professor, her lectures were good lecture slides. I found that she expected too much from 1st years students i had to go to a bunch of writing services in the library just to do decent on the assignments because there was no guide to her assignments. She also tried to make the final exam too difficult. Not bad but a little difficult
Decent prof.Interesting material. PASS was really helpful..it saved me!
Loved this prof! Yes she does expect a lot from first year students but it is university, grow up!! Analysis assignments were very easy and case briefs were not bad. Exams were very easy and organized by lecture which was very helpful. Easy if you paid attention to lectures. Only got a B because I never did my last assignment!
Jane is an amazing lecturer, humorous and very dedicated, though the assignments were difficult as the instructions were not clear. Exams were not difficult as most of the material came form the lectures. Overall I would recommend her if you like to read and attend classes.
Jane is a god. She is incredibly intelligent, eloquent, opinionated, and just awesome. Her class isn't a bird course, those who are complaining about her probably are not good students in the first place.
doesn't care about students, cares about getting lecture over with. formerly worked iegal field and assumes its easy to learn. Makes a dry topic even worse. oh and if you want a bell curve? she likes those... better get a good mark or your brutal mark just got worse.
She is a great lecturer. Almost all her lectures are interesting however she relied on the TAs too heavily she didn't help with anything. I found her expectations really high for a first year class however to some extent she was fair. Her Multiple choice was very difficult. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND HER FOR THIS CLASS HOWEVER SHE IS A GOOD PROF!
Jane is an incredibly knowledgeable and engaging professor. In these areas, she is among the best that I've had in three years at Carleton. Her exams are all multiple choice and incredibly easy, but beware of the Case Brief and be sure to ask questions and seek clarification. Tutorials are a waste of time, but aren't graded.
Jane is an amazing prof! She's clear, recaps last class at the beginning of class and has very high expectations for her TA's - which makes her high expectations for students fair (and a valuable academic experience). She uses a lot of case studies to explain material and make material 'real'. Would do it again!!
AMAZING PROF.
Jane was a good lecturer; you might panic the first couple of weeks as the material is not pretty clear, but as you move forward through the lectures, it all starts to make sense. So... first assignments can be though, but as soon as you practice with those, the other papers and the final will be easy (if you study of course!)
Took summer Law 1000. Prof would not meet with me to discuss accommodations as I go through Paul Menton Centre for learning disability. First time a prof ever turned down talking to me. Found it was not organized well the class, this could be since its a condensed online version for summer. Any questions, you are asked to go through TA.
This professor certainly has personality, and while she might not be the easiest prof, this class is definitely worth it. Her lectures are well organized and are clear. Exams and assignments may appear to be difficult, but if you put in the time and effort and do the readingsstudydo researchask questions, you can do really well. Highly recommend
She was a great lecturer, and her classes were very interesting. She has a stuck up personality though, and does not interact with her students outside of class. Her grading is tough, as well as her exam (one per entire year, not per semester in my case) and it was long - watch the first assignment, other than that I would take her again!
FAVOURITE PROF AT CARLETON. She is absolutely amazing. You must go to her class, otherwise you will fall behind. She is hilarious and overall just an insanely fun class to be in!
Sets very unclear expectations for her assignments and exams, and marks unfairly. I emailed her and she didn't respond. I went to her office, and she was unhelpful and rude. As a recent graduate, I can say there are many incredible professors at Carleton. I suggest taking a class with one of them instead of her.
Lots of readings, really fast paced lectures, difficult tests.
Great prof! Yes she can be stuck up at times, but she's very educated and a great lecturer. The recap of the previous class at the start of every class really helps and I find it's great that she does that. If you pay attention and make sure you do the assignments with fully understanding the expectations, you'll do great!
Fascinating content, really delves into topics
Jane is AMAZING! I absolutely loved her humour and sass. She is able to make boring content of LAWS 1000 super easy. Her exams are straightforward study the lecture slides. Attendance is mandatory to get a good mark in this course. Study lecture slides for the exam throughly and you will be able to Ace the exam. Love her!
Honestly super easy class, ima Distance education student and missed like half the lectures and got a b+
Really liked her as a Prof. Shes funny, easy to pay attention to, and really knows her stuff. Her exams were very fair and she gave a review the last day of class. I did very well in this course even though I did poorly on one pf the papers. I would take her again.
Jane is hilarious. Her lectures are amazing and most of her exams come directly from them. Take good lecture notes and you should be fine.
She was away majority of the semester. You claimed I failed the class, after doing my own research on my marks turns out I passed with a 77. DO NOT take her class.
She's a great prof and gives great lectures. Always gives a recap of the last class before your continue with the new material. Makes it clear what she expects from you, and the exams are pretty easy. She gives away a lot of basically free marks. Super smart and well respected on my part!
Amazing lectures, she's so funny, but her assignments can be difficult so don't leave them until the last minute
You need to go to class and read the textbook because both exams are based upon the textbook understanding. She starts classes off by reviewing previous lecture and gives great examples. Put in the effort and your grade will reflect it. Ask relevant questions in lectures, she is not afraid to challenge your position on a topic. Be prepared!
Caters to far-left motives. I prefer Professors who are unbiased and aren't pushing an agenda. I'm a third year science student and took this class as an elective over the summer. The content had a surprising amount of socialism and human rights issues than I expected. Luckily, I got A+'s on the papers because her exams are a mess. Textbooks needed
The professor has an agenda of her own and expects the students to replicate her ideology in their assignments. If you do not follow this then expect your grade to be deplorable. I did reach out with questions but they went unanswered, maybe she felt they were beneath her intelligence.
Great prof with a lot of insight on the field outside of school.
Jane is a great prof ! Her exams are fair you won't find things that haven't been taught on there Her slides are very useful and filed with content that's relevant and makes things easier to understand. I personally didn't do the readings however she sometimes gives brief summaries of the readings in class .
Best class ive taken at carleton. i did it in the summer and watched her lectures through VOD she was so interesting to learn from and great at explaining. Powerpoints were clear and you could pass from just watching lecs and reading slides but she makes you want to get a good grade and material is interesting. overall A+ prof.
Honestly, if you fail this class you need to reconsider your priorities. ANY course requires reading and your full attention- reading how this class was "too tough" doesn't make sense. You literally will pass if you just do the slides and go over her lectures (through vod/notes)she's awesome and is huge about social issues. Best. Prof. hands down.
ALL AOUND BRUTAL :( DON''T TAKE :( TAKE THE CLASS WITH SEBASTIEN!!!! :)
I had her for law 1001 & 1002. In the first lecture she acts slightly rude and sarcastic which can be offputting, however she is hilarious and her lectures are awesome. Theres 2 papers and a final. The final is extremely fair and there are no surprises. If you know the slides and lectures you will pass easily. Exam also has 5 give me bonus Qs
100% would never take another class with this prof. If you want to take a class to learn about law as I did, you're not going to learn much about it from her. Virtually all of her lectures are hyperfocused on racism, sexism and Marxism. She seems to want to use her class to push her own politics on students instead of teaching them law.
Was rude and entered too much propaganda into her lecturers. Also marked very hard, would not take her class again.
Really enjoyed her class. I am a science student and took Laws 1001 as an elective. You really need to understand the content and how it relates to the material in other sections of this course, regurgitating whats on the slides will give you a pass but not much more.
This was one of my lowest grades.. and I worked very hard. her name describes her. she knows her stuff tho.. just shouldn't be teaching.
if I knew this website before hand, I would not have taken a class with her.. make use of ur resources. to avoid professors like her
To pass her class you must go to the lectures! her exam was not hard and there was no surprises. as long as you studied your notes and lecture slides you are good. you do not even have to read the textbook but you must go to the lectures then because she explains more in detail. She is very knowledgeable and knows her stuff.
Extremely tough grader. Gave VERY low grades to intelligent and well-prepared students on final exam. . Not ideal for those applying to law school! Several students appealing grades. Answered all questions with detail and reference to her lecture + readings and still received an extremely low grade. Be cautious!
be ware, alot of people are clearly complaining for a reason. take it with another prof, unless u extremely have on choice, don't take her for any class
I was extremely wary before attending her lectures because of everything I had read on here, however, I completely loved her lectures. Jane takes the time to really make the material digestible and easy to understand. The exams and assignments were very fair with no surprises. All in all, if you do the work and go to the lectures, you'll do great.
The textbook is hard to read, but should still be done. Great professor and really knows her stuff. She seems intense, but still really funny and wants you to do well. Things are marked by TAs and they're always willing to help.
Not my favourite. Very mean. This is a first year LAW class so should make students love it not hate it.
She literally took my phone away when it began ringing and answered it infront of the whole class. Turns out it was my mom, and what ensued was an embarassing conversation between her and JD. Never have I seen such unprofessionalism by a professor.
Better than most people say she's, but not by much. Lectures are easy to follow and same with readings. She is very fast paced, intense, boarder line mean when people ask her questions. Her and her TAs are very hard markers and enjoy failing people. Teaches from a very liberal/anti-capitalistic POV which does effect how the class material is taught
Online discussions aren't very user friendly and discourage participation, despite making up a huge amount of marks. I missed one 15 percent paper due to unforeseen circumstances and did not know that every paper was mandatory to be submitted in order to pass the course. Hence, I completed a full year course with a solid low 80s grade but failed.
She comes across as a very hardy personality. Shes an extremely tough person but honestly knows what shes talking about. Didnt read majority of the readings and I would say if you memorize lecture material youre bound to get in the Bs for final exam. Shes really good at expanding on lecture material and makes things make sense.
shes great
Good Professor, expect a lot of reading for a first year course, and most of the content requires careful reading, at times it can be hard to understand. Overall good course if your looking for an interesting first year option.
Was concerned about taking her class based on the reviews on here but really loved the class. She goes over material multiple times and explains everything in the simplest terms possible. She wants you to succeed but not without putting in effort.
She knows what she is talking about and her lectures are interesting. Assignments are fair and based on course content. Her exams cover a lot of reading material so ensure you have a good grasp of the readings beforehand. She does come off a bit harsh at first but she is actually really funny and interesting.
Jane is one of the most engaging professors that I've had the pleasure of having. Don't slack off on your work and treat this course seriously, especially with the high DFW rate. Be prepared to read and do yourself a favour and pay attention in class! P.S. -- I know you're reading this Jane, keep up the good work! ;)
JD did good lectures and her first assignment was fair, her second one even the TA said they wouldn't have passed it first year. The exam was good if you study and JD puts up with many students complaints. I did feel like she tried to push her political views in the class but many profs do. She isn't the worst but isn't the best.
She has amazing lectures! Most people Ive talked to had trouble doing well on assignments but I guess that really depends on your TA. I will say she does push her political views a lot so if that bothers you, I wouldnt recommend but shes honesty great at explaining the material. I cant wait to take LAWS 1002 with her as well!
Jane D. is an amazing prof. She is a very caring and knowledgeable person that wants you to succeed. The assignments are fairly straightforward, but the exam is challenging. You need to make sure you do the readings and attend tutorials, it makes up for a large percentage of your final grade! Taking her again next term!
She's better then some of these negative reviews but definitely not as great as the positive ones say she is. She comes off intense and mean at times, assignments are toughly graded, and the exam is very hard as well. She really pushes her political agenda which can be frustration if you're just trying to get the class over with for a law credit.
The formatting of this class was so unusual. There was no assignments or final exam but there was 3 quizzes, 2 worth 20% and 1 worth 30%, mostly based on the lectures and a bit of the readings. I would've rather had actual assignments and exam because those quizzes were so stupid and brought my grades down significantly
Best prof I have had so far. Not only does she care a lot what she is teaching but she cares a lot about her students. She did an incredible job adjusting to the changes caused by the pandemic!
JD is very knowledgeable about the subject and wants to push her students to succeed. She can take a while to respond to emails but she will respond. She can come off as intense and strict but she is a really good prof and not afraid to challenge your opinions! Participation does matter as it makes up 25% of your grade.
I could not stand the set up for this class it was so oddly done nothing live but the tutorial and it was badly run. assignments are super hard and the grades are just as bad.
Her lectures are interesting and she speaks enthusiastically (lectures are not monotone). The absolute minimum must be achieved to earn credit for the class: complete every evaluation, attend at least one discussion session, etc. The quizzes are non-cumulative.
She always thought she knew best. In 2020, we had little instruction on how to succeed in assignments, and the exam was brutal. Every question on a new page and could not go back (exam crashed). It was more questions than usual with less time. Students expressed concerns but were ignored. Also really pushed her political agenda. Came off mean.
Maybe the online aspect of it made it hard, but I found it hard to reach to her via email . Since the class is asynchronous with videos, its hard to stay engaged with the material because there is no actual human interactions. But overall if you took grade 11/12 law, you should be fine. I appreciate how her assignments are clear.
Exam was nothing like material we learned and was very hard, shes a great prof and super nice but exam was difficult.
Jane is a good prof, but not great. Does not involve herself in the online world much, directs you to your TA if you have a question. Lectures are extremely heavy and long, the exam was extremely difficult. It was a good class, but I won't be taking one with her again.
The class material itself was decent, however, TAs were inconsistent and she was impossible to reach. In addition the exam was extremely difficult and wasnt entirely based on the material covered in class. Unless it was mandatory I wouldnt take this again.
After some thought I think The prof is not the problem, the Ta really matters if you want clear instructions. Overall both assignments given were pretty straightforward. The exam made sense 105 questions in 2 hours but many answers to the questions were very similar so it was hard finding the right answer. I really recommend PASS it helps.
Mrs.Dickson is difficult, she does not respond to emails, BEWARE of Jonathan Carleson as a TA change as soon as you can, lecture heavy, a lot of readings, the exam is easy if you really study, you cannot slack off. Although she does only give 2 assignments and they are pretty easy. At the end of the day don't take her class.
She was an extremely hard marker, class averages were never above 70%. Lectures were boring and long. Very bad at communicating with students via email. Would not recommend to anyone.
her class sucked. There was no way to contact her and her TA's were just as bad.
Exam is awful. She gives you over 100 MC questions that are super specific and you are responsible from EVERYTHING. Never again.
Bro is just bad but mans funny
The final exam was lengthy and tricky, but should go okay if you really study. You should consult with your TA if you want clarifications on the individual assignments. Although lectures were more important, don't skip the readings or weekly discussion groups. Her political agenda was really on-the-nose in some lectures, which got old pretty quick.
Jane Dickson sucks
I took her my very first semester. Its like she wants her students to fail, the exam is multiple choice but basically all the answers are right you need to choose the "most right" one. Her last lecture she literally was preparing the students to fail. She won't answer your emails don't bother
I respect professor Dickson for her works but she shouldn't be teaching at all. From first lecture she is teaching course material around this idea that "capitalist system only creates suffering" and she complains about Bezos every lecture. As someone who from an ex-communist country, I find her lectures quite offensive. Too much political bias.
She pushes her political agenda (in times where it has no relevance to the topic in lecture). The exam is also ridiculously hard for a first year course. She purposely puts several correct answers but you have to pick the MOST correct. Overall, very hard class yet little to no understanding of students and our stresses to succeed.
She started off her first year course by telling us that a large portion of us are going to fail and don't have what it takes to be in her class. She had an entire class beg her to not use online proctoring for our exam because we were stressed and the other sections weren't proctored and she yelled at us. Course was hard & she wasn't understanding
Would definitely recommend her. Great prof and LAWS1001 online with her was definitely easier than what my friends learnt in the in person section. Would 100% take again.
Would for sure recommend LAWS1001 online with her. Was easy and interesting.
I am very confused by all of her bad reviews. She was a great and caring prof and it was a great course. Definitely wasn't nearly as hard as people make it sound
Horrible and unprofessional
Doesn't consider student needs and unfair.
this was horrible. she doesn't answer emails and neither do her TA's They don't explain the assignments and if you take the online one like I did the TA for discussion groups does not help at. discussion groups are 25% of your grade and keep track of what ones you go to because he said I went to 5/9 when I went to 8/9.
Assignments were fine. Exam will tank your grade. I had done well throughout the course but the exam was impossible, I barely passed. Over 100 mc questions, with no clear right answer. Her online course is 100x harder than the in person class. I would never recommend taking this version of the class, try and get in person.
It doesn't matter how great your mark is going into the exam or how much effort you put in prior, because the exam is designed so that the majority will fail (she even says so), with over 100 mc questions and a difficulty level that more than surpasses first year (every answer was correct with minor differences). Other sections had easier versions
Do not take her class. She is too strict like she's teaching law school. Like she doesn't know we are first year undergraduate students fresh from highschool. She made me hate my program. Tough grader and does not give reasonable feedback. Very arrogant and hostile energy; not approachable at all.
Dont take her class
Lots of readings in this class. You cannot rely on the slides to study for the exam, you need to watch the lectures and take notes. Speaking of the exam, it was really hard; be prepared for it to tank your grade. With only two assignments though the course load is not too bad, although every week has a ton of readings, which are also on the exam.
The exam will TANK ur mark. She makes all the answers so similar it's just a curveball every time. If you can take in person instead TAKE IT.
Material was not engaging and found it very difficult to sit through the lectures. Did not like the overall experience. TA's provide no feedback.
- Will not answer any of your emails - Exam will TANK your mark. - No matter how much you study, you can not do well on the exam. - Online exam is proctored. - I have emailed her multiple times to review my exam and had to take it to someone higher up at Carleton because she won't answer me. - She is unfair & unprofessional. - Avoid if you can
Getting a hold of her is harder than having a 100% average. The exams are designed to make you fail and they are also monitored. The TA's are just as braindead. If this is a mandatory class for you, please take someone else or just take it in the summer. An introductory class should never be this much of a pain to pass. Organic Chem is easier.
This class was truly one of the worst learning experiences I have ever had. Despite doing well in the class, Dr. Dickson is the absurdly unengaged. Class is pre-recorded, and she makes it clear that all inquiries related to the course must be directed to her TA, not to her. Many students struggled to reach her, going weeks without a reply.
I understand that professors are busy. However, in a class that is online and pre-recorded, one would imagine that the prof would be accessible during the few moments in which she is asked. I genuinely wonder if she often forgot that she was ‘teaching' a class. This experience was multitudes below what I experienced in other faculties.
worst class ever
Made the mistake of signing up for this class both semesters. If you care about your GPA at all, avoid this class at all costs. The pre-recorded lectures are old--not like a few months, but several years old! The final exam is so difficult that it will tank your grade; I'd rather rip off my toenails one by one. TAs are also unreasonably strict.
(LAWS 2301) For the class size she puts too much weight on participation. It did not reflect the work actually being done in the class, especially since the TAs don't let everyone talk. We had 2 quizzes, a 10 page essay, and an exam, yet participation was worth 25%. She also pushes her political values way too much. It's tiring and innapropriate.
FOR LAWS 2301: genuinely one of the best and most inspirational profs i've had:,) she is so informed about what she does and you can tell she has genuine respect for those who put in the time and effort. one of my favourite classes by FARRR, will absolutely be taking another class with her ps— although attendance isn't mandatory, SHOW UP!!!
Great example of a university academic who ignores teaching because they have tenure.
Genuinely, the worst professor I have ever had. I recommend you stay away if you want a good GPA.
Pretty horrible...
made me drop out of carleton because of how bad she was.
If I could give a zero, I would. Communication was nonexistent — emails were never unanswered. The exam was disorganized, and it dropped everyone's average. Instructions were unclear throughout the course, and students were left feeling unsupported and extremely frustrated. The worst academic experience I've ever had. The average was a C-...
Honestly just make sure you take VERY thorough notes for the lectures (I took the online asynchronous class). She says that everything she says in lecture is testable and you will see that in the exam. My notes were 95 pages by the end and after going thru them the exam was not that hard at all. Also work hard on the assignments and participate!
this was for LAWS2301D. Honestly the material is not difficult, however her as a professor is a little too opinionated. She pushed politics and is very left leaning. She actually said that carleton is an easy school and doesnt allow her to teach harder material. She alarmed us immediately that she wouldnt give many A's. Easy exam though.
I'm shocked to see anyone on here actually likes her. She pushes her political values way too much. Participation is worth way too much of your mark. Literally a guest speaker every other week. She introduced the course by saying she doesn't give out As. Doesn't like her students. Do not recommend.
Way too political. Would start each morning with a rant about either Trump or Ford. Cancelled a class once as soon as it started because the projector wouldn't work and blamed it on the Ford government. Most test questions consist of answers that she labels as "most correct answer" which is a guessing game of which answer fits her views the best.
none of her lectures are up to date and are years old. exams are extremely hard
Attendance in discussion groups is mandatory. The lectures are dull and a little opinionated but quick to get through online. The assignment grading was tough but the final wasn't bad and it was online
I actually really enjoyed her a lot. It's the TA you need to watch out for. She's super funny and honestly she's a baddie. This course was extremely difficult and I'm not sure I even passed but I had so much fun learning it.
Only a 1 because 0 isn't possible, this prof does not respond to any emails, the ta is also very bad. They give out grades and feedback that don't make any sense for what was submitted l, then when approached about how this grade was given they are silent and no response even after multiple emails!!!DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!worst university experience
This class is a complete mess. The professor doesn't answer emails at all and clearly doesn't care if students are confused. The TAs are just as bad and often have no idea what they're talking about, they just read off the slides quite useless. Save yourself the stress and don't take this prof.Almost dropped out cuz of her.NEVER AGAIN
The assignments each worth 20% of our grade were fine, and it's possible to get good marks on them. Showing up to tutorials is a must-it's 25% of your grade, and makes a difference after the exam. The exam class average was 49.6% and the maximum grade someone got on the exam was 76%. Seemed impossible to do well on the exam, but lectures are good!!
The course is a challenge even if the content is interesting. The TA's are just as confused as we are, and it shows in our grades. This stems from the fact that this professor does not reply to emails. or inquiries. If you like a challenge, this course is for you. If not, then just know this course is not a sweet ride.
