She seems to know what she is talking about it and seems to have an interest in the subject. The lecture isn't too boring. But the exams are designed so most people get a C and are very very fact intensive.

WORST TEACHER EVER! DO NOT TAKE HER! Lecture is boring. Tests are insane. Class average is a 70 on tests (which is a C- in her book) and she calls this good!! I was told she is the same way in all her classes. Avoid her at all costs or you WILL regret it!
I loved her. She is a great professor. Very fair. Shows a lot of movies, but knows her stuff
awesome lady, funny, compassionate, just not a verry good teacher. Tests are impossible even though their open book.
She is a very sweet lady. She weighs papers more tests (in most cases); because she admits her tests are difficult. Her lectures would be interesting, if students participated. Try her classes!
Interesting class. Regret not reading and going to lecture though. PAPERS are an automatic A. Tests are insane. SWEEEEEET lady though.
Not a worthy course.
Very boring class
Nice lady. She seems like a really cool old lady who'd be fun to go out to lunch with, but not to have as a professor. Lecture tends to drag on from beginning to end, and it's hard to figure out what exactly you are learning about for that lesson. Honestly, I've heard of better soc prefessors.
horrible horrible class..dont do this yourself, drop out while you still can!didn't learn a damn thing, lecture wasn't interesting, she keeps talking just so she can keep you there for the full amount of time instead of getting what needs to be learned out and just ending class. dont take her class!
Just don't do it... the TAs do all the work and they have no idea what they are doing. They're always late, and never have old assignments or tests. Even though its open book, most of the test questions don't even make sense. Take her if you must, but be careful!!
I went to EVERY LECTURE (in which she starts 20 mins after classtime and ends usually 20 mins before end time) AND IT STILL DRAGS ON AND ON WITH HER CONSTANT COUGHING from smoking and her DOG's constant barking. SHE has terrible teaching style and her tests are NEVER CLEAR, always controversial!
To pull an "A" in this class make sure to write your essays on time (she allows rewrites for a higher grade) and complete the optional final project (easy) that counts for 10 full points on your final grade. Her tests could be a bit more clear, but make sure to go to lecture and you'll be fine.
This professor is ridiculous, she's all over the place. Very unorganized and it makes you feel like she has no idea what she is talking about. Very difficult to focus when her dog is pissing on the carpet and she's telling you that it has a bladder infection. Come on. Take her if you are forced.
She's a nice and sweet lady. However, as a professor she's okay. I like her sarcastic personality, but the class can get a bit frustrating when she constantly coughs and asks one of her TA's to get her a soda. Also she brings her dog to class. That's cool though. I got an A. Do the extra credit.
easy class, easy professor, sometimes brings dog to class, TAs basically do everything she asks, shes a really nice lady! do readings and extra credit, and u'll do fine!
class was boring, non-informative, crap(literally there was crap there). Her dog was cute, but I don't think it's a T.A's responsibility to pick up dog crap, then again they weren't good for much else, they were disorganized, not helpful, and always late. She was lame, her T.A.'s were lame, and her class, lame. She's a nice lady, just a bad teacher
ez class...her test questions are sumtimes not clear but if the class complains about the questions she will most likely change them. her dog was annoying-barked alot.
easy A ... just make sure u do well on the exams. u dont even have to show up to class to do well. just read the textbook, which is pretty easy to get thru. also has extra credit paper to boost ur grade!
HORRIBLE
This woman is ridiculous. The worst professor I've ever had. Disorganized. Senile. Her tests are unclear. Her writing assignments are graded by TA's. Sure you'll get an A if you suck up and follow her like her dog. But no one should be responsible for doing that.

I hear a lot of whining from students who obviously did not pass her class. If you couldnt write 5 page papers or pass her OPEN BOOK TESTS and study the things in her syllabus, then you shouldnt be in a college class. If you had problems with your grades, she offered extra credit. If you couldnt submit your papers on time, she gives 1-2 week extentions. Dont go to college if you cant handle the work load.
she coughs into the mike the whole class, if the mike works, takes her about 15 mins b4 EVERY class to figure out how it works. the dog barks and craps around the room. she is a horrible lecturer, the only thing i learned in the class, and i quote "technology is everywhere". then we watched a boring documentary everyday. do the papers - easy- do the extra credit and pass. rent the move if you can. buy her some nicorette too.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! SHE IS THE WORST PROF I EVER HAD IN STONY! SHE IS DISORGANIZED AND A BAD LECTURER. SHE IS TOO STUPID TO KNOW HOW TO USE BLACKBOARD AND HER TA IS NO BETTER! DONT BE FOOLED BY THE IDEA OF OPEN BOOK TESTS, THEY'RE USUALLY THE HARDEST! SHE MAKES MILLIONS OF MISTAKES ON THE TESTS! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DONT TAKE THE CLASS!
NOT an easy A or B. Her multiple choice questions are so tricky. She ends up having to curve due to her errors. She should retire.
open book exams are tough as hell. most ppl avrg 70 on them. 3 5-page papers along with 3 texts are equivalent to an upper division english course. boring lectures, class consists of watching documentaries, did i mention the exams are hard as ****? extra credit is offered: 10 points on ur FINAL grade. great class if taught by other prof.
Maybe it's not an easy A, but by FAR an easy C! Her exams are tough, but if you take the time to study, you'll do ok. The papers aren't difficult, she gives you the option to rewrite for a higher grade, and she'll base your final grade on your area of strength -- the papers or tests (for most, the papers). It IS college, work is required!!
besides the fact that her lectures are beyond boring for a topic that should be interesting, she has the nerve to roll her eyes when a student who has a cerebral palsy asks a question off her because the women doesn't speak clearly enough. if your looking for a class to sleep in this is the one for you.
Can't teach... plays movies almost every class.. Actually should be let go..She's doing a disservice to the educational system.
horrible! i emailed her in dec before the spring semester started, because there was an error in my grade. It is now the end of spring semester and it still hasn't been done yet!!! I've been in her office every month at least twice and she keeps saying oh it will be done, it will be done. DON"T TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES!! maybe then she'll quit.
Class isnt as hard as i thought it would be. She is definitely as mean/grouchy as everyone is making her seem. Very sarcastic, gets annoyed if you ask a question or ask her to repeat soemthing she said. Take the class if you need to, do the readings and review sheets and you'll probably pull off a B. Then try to erase her from your memory forever.
I enjoy her classes, unfortunately what you learn isn't relfected in the grade you may receive.. Her exams are open book but extremely difficult because of the wording. Take her classes if the material interests you -- avoid her classes if you just need sociology electives.
She's a bit unorgainzed, so if you hand soemthing in stay on top of her.....overall its an easy grade....yea she gives open book exam and there harder, but duh its open book.....Shes boring, but very nice....if you need the class suck it up and take her....You really dont even need to go to class, everythings out of the books!
YES! Shes sarcastic and its f'n amazing. I like her class a lot and the exams are a little difficult but its open book!! Plus the papers can be rewritten and theres an extra credit paper that goes on top of your final so you're whole grade can increase by 10 points! Can't go wrong...I'm taking her again next semester for two more classes.
Test are open book but very hard. BUT - go to office hours bc the TA will give you a copy of the exam, and the final IS cumulative. She does however let you rewrite the first paper and the second paper you will get an A just for doing it bc its an opinion paper. AND she gives an extra credit project.
this is an interesting class, exams are open rewritten notes and open book. There are 2 assigned paper, a movie on the history of nyc and an optional project which is fun beacause you can visit a museum about the history of new york.
if you understand her grading system this is an easy B+. you can fail the tests & still get a B if you do good on the papers. open book/notes for the test but the questions are really hard/confusing. it almost doesnt even matter because you dont have to go to class to get a good grade, you just have to have common sense & know how to write a paper
Terribly boring class, but the exams were pretty fair. The class itself is very unorganized, it was hard to sit through, she does let you out early a lot though
3 open book tests, harder since they are open book. Can use all of the books, review ditto, and notes during tests. 2 papers, after U hand them in U get them back & are told what is wrong with them and given the option 2 rewrite them for a better grade. 2nd grade counts. Also gives 1 optional paper worth up to 10 extra credit points on final grade.
I was so interested in this class, but she made it SO boring. Definitely would not recommend her. 2 papers (they're easy) 3 open book exams (which were tricky) I did all the review questions every time & read all the readings & I thought I did well on the exams, but my grade was always disappointing. Exams were definitely hard.
She never lectures; we just watched movies all semester. You dont learn very much in this class and its boring. Her tests are pretty easy because they are open book, except for the final which was tough. Shes a really slow grader, and theres no good reason for that because she has 2 undergrad TAs and 2 grad TAs to help, I guess she's just lazy.
Dr. Ely is an exquisite jewel at the University. My classmates would be prudent to blend her lecture, textbooks to really utilize this course. This professor allows open book text and if you're not lazy, it's a no brainer. She instills a foundation of knowledge in her students, in contrast to other professors who make you cram and forget it all.
open book tests, 2 easy papers that she lets you re-write. take ely.
She is so boring its hard to stay awake in her class. Her tests are really hard because they're open book. There's 2 papers that she gives you the opportunity to re-write and one optional paper to add up to 10 points to your final grade. That was really the only good part of the class.
Exams are nearly impossible to do well on...the questions are super confusing. Also she never really teaches, just lectures but is so disorganized that she might as well not show up. The Undergrad and Grad TAs do pretty much all the work.
The lectures are very boring, and attendance is not mandatory. What she lectures really isn't on the exam, however, all exams are open book, and can be tricky but you have alot of time. There's no reason you shouldn't get at least a B, because she gives extra credit that adds ten points to your final grade. Easy A- for me
Most of the class is on videos, its actually important to go though because the tests are open notes/book. Also go to the review sessions, you get test answers there. There are two papers. She gives you an opportunity to re-write paper for a better grade.
She is wonderful, easy and sarcastic. This professor has 3 open book tests, 2 papers that you can REWRITE, and 1 optional paper... that adds 10 points to your grade. Almost everyone gets the 10 points. She is sooo easy to talk to and you would be happy o have her. EASY A- or B+
As many have said, her tests are hard and confusing, but you CAN ask her for help in her smaller deviance class during the exams. Yes, she can go on and on about random things, but she is interesting, and I've had her for 2 other courses. If you rewrite the papers, read the books, and do the extra credit, any one can get at least a B+ or an A.
Nice & cares her students learn. Tests are open book & open notes. Tests are hard because of that but she knows her tests are hard & grades on a curve accordingly. 3 tests & 2 papers. After she grades them she gives you imput & the option to re-write for a higher grade. Also an optional extra credit paper worth up to 10 points on your final grade.
BORING. Didn't learn anything from going to class. She is nice & fun but the lectures are not coherent. I learned more from going home and researching the lecture topic. Re-write the papers, do the extra credit paper and the end of the semester...read the text and fill out the review sheet. The exams are extremely difficult.Would not take her again.
I liked this class until she gave me an incomp. for not having a grade for a paper that I had done. she seems to be very disorganized and just a mess. The tests are open book so its not too hard but going to class is helpful. Sometimes she can rant about useless things. I would not take another class of hers.
Even though I got an A, I would never reccomend that anyone take her. She doesn't teach, just shows a boring movie everyday or has her grad TA lecture and he was a jerk too! When she does teach she makes no sense and her topic is all over the place. Her tests suck! Even though they are open book it still makes no sense. She sucks...don't take her!
She's cynical and sarcastic, and she pretty much hates stony brook just as much as the students do. she is a very intelligent woman and she makes class interesting. its a good class to boost your GPA. she gives a few papers and 2 open book tests.extra credit. her class is like comedy hour...highly recommended!!!!
HOW MANY CLASSES DO YOU KNOW OF THAT LET YOU RE-WRITE YOUR PAPERS?! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PULL IT BACK UP IN YOUR COMPUTER FOLLOW HER COMMENTS (I.E. ELABORATE, QUOTE),ITS AN EASY A AND IT TAKES 5 MINUTES...THE TESTS ARE LONG BUT ALL OF THE QUESTIONS ARE ON THE REVIEW SHEET AND YOU CAN BRING IT TO THE EXAM! TO TOP IT OFF SHE IS HILARIOUS!!TAKE IT!!!
she seems sweet enough. i got an A in the class but i still wouldn't recommend her. Her lectures are confusing and if you write down everything she says, it won't matter. the movies she shows are boring as hell but you're supposed to know little facts from it. the exams were ridiculous if you didn't read everything thoroughly.easy papers though
Loved this class. I gained a really in-depth knowledge of New York City history. You just watch movies in class. Go to her exam reviews; all the answers are in the text. 2-3 easy papers. Do the extra credit and you'll get a good grade even if you don't do that well on the tests.
Buy the movie watch all the episodes before exams
Horrific, late all the time did not cover material.Worst professor I ever had.
she is a mean...kicked numerous students out of final exam bc our notes to her OPEN NOTEBOOK TESTS were 2 close 2 previous tests and made all 50 of us fail the class and now i may not be graduating...she never grades any papers shows up late and makes you watch boring movies..her reviews are horrible DONT TAKE HER!
Very nice and tries her best to reach out to those who are very dumb. calls out those who are not paying attention in class. open book tests, two papers and rewrites along with e.c. Just don't think you can get away with cheating... must do your own work
I've had this professor for two classes already and I love her! Open book exams, 2 papers and a great extra credit opporunity. Might not be the most interesting topics but theres no way you can fail.
Would not recommend.
Horrible professor! Grading scheme is ridiculous; class is hard enough as it is but she still makes it hard to get in the A/A- range! Doesn't know how to teach; just shows movies in class and lectures about stuff that's NOT on the exams! DON'T TAKE her!! Avoid at all costs!! HORRIBLE PROFESSOR who doesn't care about anything!!
She was by far the worst professor I have ever had. Her class is not only boring and nearly pointless to attend, but when she does in her rare moments to try to teach something, she makes no sense at all. Her tests are completely absurd considering the questions aren't even english sentences and completely ambiguous. Who gave this jackass a PhD?
HORRENDOUS TEACHER!!! The most stressful class in my whole 3 yr career as a college student. Exams aren't coherent at all... Doesn't matter how much material you bring with you, you still fail the OPEN BOOK exams. Doesn't care that whole class is failing... lets put it this way; my raw grade was a 42 and it was curved to a B+... think about it. DO
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! BABBLES ON ABOUT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING UNRELATED TO EXAMS, WHICH ARE ALSO INCOMPREHENSIBLE AND IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A GOOD GRADE ON. Listen to the reviews - AWFUL PROFESSOR! DO NOT take ANY of her classes - you will regret it, just like I do! Any good reviews must be a MISTAKE! (No longer gives open book exams)
Took soc 315 currently taking 338 no longer does open book exams b.c of "cheating". She talks about irrelevant info 1st Test had 25 questions majority of the class failed . Claimed " its hard to make up questions for exams" When confronted with her mistakes she does not own up. Avoid her classes.
Every1 complaining about this professor is doing poorly in the class and being hateful because of no more open books. I think the tests are difficult, I haven't done well on them but she is curving them and she is a wonderful prof. She's witty, funny, sarcastic and knows what she's talking about Two of my friends who arent in the class always come!
she's not too bad. she's certainly not great but the people who are complaining probably failed her tests. i got Bs on both her exams. i didnt think they were unreasonable at all. you do have to keep up with the readings & study & pay attention in class to get a good grade. her study guides were very helpful. i actually really enjoyed this class
GREAT class. Prof is funny, witty & reminds you of your grandma that drinks too much. Tests are difficult, but fair IF YOU STUDY. I pulled mid-high 80s on exams, while students complained they got 40s. If u come to class, actually listen (instead of chatting, texting, or playing farmville), u should do fine. Papers are easy A+ if u know how to writ
Terrible. Exams questions are like AP history. The questions are ambiguous and irrelevant. I learned nothing about sociology. The papers are difficult. I received a B and B- before rewrites, with minimal comments. HOW CAN I KNOW WHAT TO FIX IF THEY DON"T TELL ME? The TA is unhelpful. He couldn't answer any of my questions. Terrible communication.
I can see what some people are saying about her going off topic in class. For her exams, the study guides are definitely useful. Pay attention and READ and you should do fine. Also, she'll curve your grade up if your exam grades improve. Extra credit paper at the end that can add up to 10 points to your final grade (so a B can turn into an A)
getting a good grade will not be a problem in prof. ely's class. all papers are allowed to be rewritten and the second grade is the one that stays. the final grade is curved and you are offered an 10 pt. extra credit paper. i was worried throughout the semester that i wasn't going to do well cuz i got a low grade on the 1st exam, but i got an A.
If you must take this class, make sure you do the optional paper at the end of the semester. I would have recieved a b- and because I did the paper I recived an a-. She really is frusturating becasue she is so nice, but an aweful professor. She is in the wrong profession I feel. Really nice person, tries to help, but tests and papers are pointless
Worst professor in my undergrad or graduate level career, obvious she hates to teach, comes in late does not cover material, frequent absences.Horrific.
Terrible professor. Rambles on about things that aren't on the exams and shows a painfully boring movie every class. Playing a movie does not equal teaching. Exams are hard (perhaps because she doesn't TEACH anything in class that are on the exams). LOTS of reading (2 novels on top of class textbook). STAY AWAY from this HORRIBLE teacher.
Like all professors, Jane Ely is interested in the students who actually take an interest in the class. She is very approachable. Tests are purposely vague and difficult. She does this to get the student's attention. If you go to class, watch the movies, take an interest, you will get an A....even if your grades are lower. She "curves"
Worst teacher I have ever had. Nothing she tells you is on the test actually is. It is almost impossible to do good. She also never has any clear presentations, she just talks. So, you never know if what she is saying is important or not.
when i first signed up for this class, i checked out these ratings for the soc 315 class and saw a bunch of "STAY AWAY", "HORRIBLE CLASS" ratings, but i thought to myself "hm, maybe it won't be that bad". so, im taking the course right now and it is THAT BAD! the teachers nice, but as for the class STAY AWAY. WORST CLASS EVER.
This is the 2nd time I have taken a course by Dr. Ely. Her classes get bad ratings, usually by students who don't attend bc attendance is not mandatory. Then they wonder why they receive a 50% on the test. Dr. Ely is funny & witty. Her tests are sometimes a little off topic, but if you know the material, you will do well. 15 POINT CURVE ON AVERAGE
The biggest problem with this class, is that the test relies so much on a textbook which we never discuss in class. The film she shows is interesting, and the two novels were good reads. But 75% of the test is based on the textbook. Plus, it seems like she goes out of her way to make the questions confusing. Luckily she curves.
Sociology of Techonology - Unless you like watching PBS documentaries that are not related to technology, don't bother taking this course. Ely is disorganized and barely teaches. The books were barely discussed and thus a waste of money. She seems like a nice lady, but was out of her mind! I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone
dont take this class if you dont have too...you can never come to class except for test adn when are assignements are due and sill pass..no attendace..class is huge like 250 students..TA's do all the grading..she rabbles on for 15 mins then movie time..watch movie whole semester..do extra credit project..will help... good class to sleep in...
what a pleasure, teaches stuff that will last a lifetime.
professional, kind and inspiring. too often a good involvement ethic goes unnoticed, especially within the SUNY realm... very approachable and more than fair to say the least. you earn what your grade in this course and get your dollar worth.
Dr. Ely and her TA, Tarun, are two hot pieces of ACE. Dr. Ely is an inspiring lecturer of the highest degree, who inserts periodical witticisms into scintillating lectures on technology/society and society/technology, which I learned are synonymous. I learned a buttload, esp. about the Erie Canal and Michael Jackson's children. Bon Appetit!
Watched a documentary almost every class. Extremely boring but allows you to rewrite papers and she offers an extra credit assignment which can be up to +10 on your final avg.
such a good class, highly recommended if your from New York! Shes a good professor and definitely a fair grader, lets you do extra credit which gave me an A.
*brings her dog into class, and doesn't respond to email. She also believes attendance in "mandatory" in a 250 people lecture (yeah right). I actually had an interest in the topic, but it was so HORRIBLY TAUGHT. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE.
does not respond to email does not teach she rambles. completely useless, I got an A on both papers and did well on tests and got a C+ somehow, worst professor
Somehow I got a B- when I did decently well on all her exams and homeworks. Sociology of crime--what can be boring about that? Oh, she finds a way! Study guides are a waste of time. She never responds to emails. Please don't take this class. Not sure how she got fair ratings on the other class she teaches.
AMAZING! She's funny and is actually a good teacher. She always finds a way to plug in jokes during the lectures. You can rewrite your essays for a higher grade and she gives an extra credit option that can add 10pts to your final grade!! Her class consissts of watching documentaries of technology throughout the 20th cen. (EASY) Highly reccomended
SHES MEAN!
Jane is one of my favorite teachers. I have take 3 classes with her and gotten A's in all of them. I don't know how you can not do well when you can rewrite your papers for higher grades (and papers count a lot) and you get 10 points on your final grade for the class so if you got a B you get an A... She is funny and interesting. Great professor.
Requires attendance only because she shows a documentary film in class every single day (which will be on exams). Otherwise, read books and attend lectures. Her exams are very tricky, so make sure you ask her to clarify anything you are unsure of. Otherwise, it is quite interesting to learn about NYC.
Took her for a 2nd time and it was a mistake. I don't know what I was thinking doing this. Sure, she's funny and witty. Yes, she lets you rewrite your papers however... her tests are hard! they're tricky and confusing. I learned my lesson the second time around, never taking her again. If you can avoid her, you should.
I loved this class! From what I heard, this is much better than other classes she teaches where you mainly watch videos. Prof. Ely is funny, interesting, and pretty fair. However, some test questions were a bit tricky, but she was more than fair to my class considering &willing to help. You MUST DO THE READING & ATTEND! Try taking decent notes too!
Condescending attitude. Exercises use of personal bias every chance she gets. Presents one sided material as dogma. Stands behind fallacious arguments and tries to justify them with utter nonsense sometimes. Criticizes discrimination yet practices it. Cannot disagree on writing assignments due to her allowing citation only from her assigned texts.
i took 315 and 338 with her for my first semester at SBU which was one of the biggest mistake I ve made.GPA's suffering because of her.soc 315 shows documentary mostly.Difficult exams.soc 338 a bit more interesting but i remember how she couldn't take it when a student tried to correct her. She is the only person thats correct in the classroom.
All she did was show movies the whole semester. She assigns papers and lets you rewrite them to get a higher grade; she lost my first one so I was unable to do the second rewrite. Definitely do not take any of her classes- ever!!
I had her for sociology of technology and crime, mad easy, i went to 10 classes last semester, get u to rewrite papers, 10 points extra credit added to ur overall average, and the review sessions held by the TA's review basically everything thats on the test, recommend taking it, simple class, no stress at all, tests are hard though
Love her personality. Class is interesting, movies can get a little boring though. Easiest A of my life.
This lady is by far one of the worst professors I have had during my whole SBU career. She is extremely rude during office hours, doesn't do much to help you with clarifying material, and doesn't even use her own lecture material. She just reads from the textbook. I stopped going to class midway through the semester and just read the book.
Terrible professor! Lectures aren't lectures-she just reads out of the text every class and is incomprehensible/confusing. Tests are somewhat hard but fair if you study-she does give good review sheets. Papers are easy and you can rewrite them. If you take the class, just read the text and come to class to hand in papers/for exams. Atten is poinles
she's not a good professor under any scale, clarity, helpfulness, easiness etc. shes a bitter old woman who gets mad when students get up to use the bathroom. enough said. fair warning
Gave me a C when I least had a B+. Tried to contact her by email, she didn't reply. Went to her office and she wasn't there. Her is easy though her lectures are usless videos are interesting though.
She lectures for like 15 minutes, then she puts a documentary on. It is a really easy going class. If you attend the TA review sessions, the tests are incredibly easy. She lets you redo papers, gives an extra credit assignment that can add 10 points to your overall average, it is really easy to do well
I had to drop the class midway, avoid!
She will pause after every other word and just stare at the class. This makes her lecture drag on and become boring. She makes it a point to point out every single person on their phone instead of teaching as well. Avoid taking her at all costs.
Movies can be a bit boring, however some are pretty interesting! She doesn't lecture that much, but the lecture is useful information. Better to go to class than not! Review sessions are key! Pretty much 85% of the exam will be spoon fed to you during the review session, so make sure to go to them! Pretty much an easy A if you give a little effort
TA's are very helpful in the reviews, you can rewrite your paper, and a good extra credit opportunity.. Movies are interesting, but the lecture is pretty boring.
Ely can be boring but really nice and forgiving when it comes to grading. you get a chance to re-write papers and you get extra credit opps too! can be hard to understand (i feel like she mumbles sometimes)
exams are extremely hard and extremely specific. i spent one whole week just to study and got 20 out of 40, and class average was 17. interesting class, but boring lecture. 2 papers to write, which we can rewrite it, one optional paper for extra credit. TA do all the work and they are very helpful.
Terrible class. No point in attending class. All we do is watch documentaries that you can easily find on your own to watch. When she does lecture, she is boring and hard to understand. The tests are really hard. Do not take this class. And if you do, go to the review sessions before the tests, since class average is around 50. Bad TAs too.
The tests are difficult and the questions are extremely ambiguous. Must read the books and put time into your study guides and attend TA reviews. The questions for the papers are ambiguous as well. The majority of the class time is watching documentaries. She is condescending to the students. Good content, not a good professor.
This class is extremely difficult. The tests are very hard and require you to read the whole book. Her notes were not very helpful to study for. The papers are 10 pages each and there is two of them. There is also extra credit. The papers you re-write. I got one A paper, one B and a C for the extra credit, but because I failed the tests, I got a D.
Very little lecturing, seemed like she showed movies almost every day. It was a bit disappointing
I really like Ely. The class is boring but she's funny. She doesn't offer paper rewrites anymore but she was forgiving and I did well. She's very understanding and approachable if you make an effort to talk to her in and out of class. Tests are very hard though and lots of reading, just wait until you get the review sheet to do the reading it helps
Ely is very confusing with her exams and assignments. They don't make sense at all. Also, although she puts up the powerpoints, they are always disorganised and not consise. I do not recommend taking this class. a
like any class, attend it. you pay for the class anyways. take some notes. pay attention to the movies. her silver lining was that during her review (class before the exam), she WILL SPOON FEED YOU THE FOCUS POINTS ON HER HW SHEET. she gives a packet full of Q. then she will tell you which ones you should focus on. class was a joke
awful professor. She does not know what she's teaching most of the time. Do not take this class if you expect it to be about technology in the modern day. It should be called the history of New York City because that is all you learn about- and watch extremely boring movies on every single lecture.
Tests are ridiculously hard. Lectures do not even match up to the material that she asks you to read for the class. I warn you, do not take her. One of the worst professors thus far on this campus.
Professor ely is funny and adorable. This class you get to watch movies which sometimes are pretty boring. just show up to class take a few notes here and there. you get what you put into. some of the answers for the exams are common sense. the class is focused on NYC.
There isn't much written homework, but if you don't read the text you will be completely lost during lectures, and tests are based on lectures and text. Don't be fooled though, this course is all about the history of New York City. It often felt like technology was just the lens used to look at the development of NYC.
Great class, very much applicable to social issues we are faced with today. You absolutely cannot skip the readings and expect to do well in this course. Professor Ely knows exactly how to word the exams so if you don't read, you will do poorly, but she also tells you exactly what concepts to know before exams.
the professor was often everywhere when lecturing. she had a lot of side comments that was very distracting and made it hard to understand the class. she is a delightful women but her exams had nothing to do with the lectures and everything to do with the reading assignments. which if you didn't understand the only time available for explanation wa
Professor Ely is a funny older lady. Rarely lectures. You watch documentaries every class and though you don't hand in homework, readings are assigned and these are a must to pass the tests. There are 2 exams (wordy), 2 papers (easy grade boosters), 1 final, extra credit optional... Basically a history class, it was not what I expected or enjoyed
Exam info is directly from the textbooks, so definitely buy them, you'll also need them for papers. She gives review sheets for the exams so as long as you study what's on the sheet it's an easy A. Papers are also obvious from the textbook readings. You don't have to attend class, but she makes it fun so I'd recommend it, very funny older woman!
Funny old lady, makes herself available for students. You definitely need to read the textbooks and watch the movies but you could skip the readings if you're a modern marvels addict. GO TO OFFICE HOURS TO SEE OLD TESTS!! They are repeated questions on the final. Her Spring '15 TAs seem to be very tough graders with a chip on their shoulder.
She is not helpful at all. The only thing that was nice about this class was that you watched a lot of documentaries. The class was not boring but the exams were very difficult. Her exams are very tricky and are created for you to get the wrong answer. I recommend that you do not take her.
The class is different. theirs movies and a textbook that are pretty different. she gives you review sheets to fill out for both. its a very simple class to do well in if you just study hard before the tests and do the assignments. big curve to (c to a b-). you dont even need to be at class if you find the movies online.
Get to know her, she believes in empathy. GO to her office hours, she's really friendly. She's seems unfriendly in class because of large class sizes and students TEXTing . Don't skip 315 class u need 2 c movies. If you READ the assigned text TWICE, you may have a chance at getting good grades on the test. Do the extra credit to ensure your A grade
Oh boy, where do I start? She doesn't seem so bad at first, she'll crack a few jokes here and there. However, don't take this class if you expect any sociology at all--you won't. This class is literally just history, NOT SOCIOLOGY. Make sure you do the readings. She doesn't take attendance but you will miss a lot if you skip.
She is a great professor. Her social deviance class was pretty easy as long as you pay attention or read your textbook. The second exam is heavy that's when attendance would be best. She literally goes through the exams and tells you what you need to know. And she gives an extra credit.
There are 3 tests. That is what your grade is solely based on and these tests are meant to fail you. There was even a test with a question that we didn't cover until after it. If you must take her, attend all review sessions and go over your tests once you get them back. You'll be thankful you did. Also do the optional paper at all cost.
Sociology of technology should actually be renamed "history of NYC" because it's literally all this class was. Her lectures are all over the place, her tests don't reflect what was covered in class, and I sill have no idea what she was even attempting to do. It was a mess. Stay away if you can.
There's only three exams and one extra credit option that's a paper. The exams are extremely difficult, my mistake was thinking they would be easy. Read the textbook, go to class and take a lot of notes.
Some chances for a letter grade increase.
This class was AWFUL. Literally could not figure out what the actual aim of the class was. Probably the worst course I took at Stony Brook and I got my Bachelor's and Masters there. There was about 300 students in the class and nothing made sense. To this day I still don't know where technology came in, or what connection was trying to be made.....
