she is soo nice. like a fun auntie type. haha her tests are pretty bogus. quizes dont count. midterm n final is easy since its just about movies you watch in class. good deal.
alot of work, manageable if you are not taking too much classes. Really nice and understanding. Lectures are very boring!!!
I could see how her lectures could be borring, but she was really good with the class that I had her for. She's very understanding, as long as you do your work and study at least a little bit, you should be fine. You can rewrite the papers & she listens.

she is a very fair and understanding person that is willing to help you in anyway possible. i know when i had problems and couldn't turn in an assignment she would allow me to turn it in when i could. she is very nice and not very demanding.
I love Professor Hallinjer! Shes so helpful and fun, the class is just great! Its not that much work, but the work she does give is a challenge
She was ok, but the class I was in consisted of a 90% hippie population, it stunk so bad I couldn't concentrate. I'm serious, flower children everywhere!
easy, easy class. Take it to get an A... A little too liberal/opinionated for my taste, but shes a film guuru; its a given. Tests are rediculously easy. She needs work her speaking grammar, but a BREEZE as a class.
At times lecture can be boring but she is really nice. She likes to joke around and have fun in class. She lets you turn in late work and most of it is pretty easy
This class was cool because all we did was watch movies everyday. Discuss movie for the last 10 minutes of class. She's an easy A though.
Her class was pretty easy. you can take the test whenever you want and submit writing assignments whenever you want. It might be true that she knows a lot about movies, but she wasn't really able to teach/transfer it to her students..
i took this class because unaccidently. this class has quizes every meeting, because she wants to take attendence based on the quizes. when i requested for early final, she forgot to bring the paper. suddenly, she asked me to make a summary from a movie which the easiest final i've ever made
pretty easy class. Movies aren't that great, but some are good. You get to vote on the movies at the end though. Easy tests, easy A. Take the class.
She's a very easy professor for an Eng. 1C class. My English 1A & 1B professors were much harder than her. Her topics were very interesting and there were many movie days. The book we read was the same book I read in English 100. She knows that people need an Eng. 1C class so she just basically gives them the credits. Overall, she's nice.
easy class. you watch movies and get tested on it. you have to write 2 essays. hard essay grader, but easy tests.
She's easy.
She is a great proffessor. She an easy grader, very helpfull and interesting.
JANE ROCKS!
She's an awsome person, just requires too much work. Also grading is OK, not as easy as the someone else had commented
Ms. Hallinger was a really nice teacher, very informative and helpful. Her class was fun, excellent movie choices. The tests were really really easy. Seriously, if you don't ditch a movie at all, then you will get an A on all the tests (unless you're just stupid). Take her for contemporary film history!
I look at movies from a different perspective. If you show up and study her guide, you will get an A. There were a couple of papers but they were easy too. She seems to be partial to men,(treats them better) but she's still fair with the grading. Make up tests and late papers and all.
Hallinger is a lovely and principled woman. Fair grader; although heavy workload. Very intelligent and approachable. I highly recommend her.
She's a great professor. She has an excellent selection of movies for the semester. You do have to pay close attention to her lecture, do the reading, and watch every movie to pass the class. Don't think you can just show up for the movie and still pass the class. You do have to work. It's a great and interesting class.
i really enjoyed hallinger's creative writing class. she doesn't grade your writing, but she keeps close track of what assignments you do and don't do. i found her assignments to be a little vague and unclear at times, but she's an interesting teacher and i loved the class. but don't take it if you want an easy A, the class has a heavy workload.
Hallinger is my favourite professor at PCC! Her English 1B class is tough as nails though if you're like me and cringe at the thought of reading "classic" short stories, poems and plays - and then promptly writing all about it. Hallinger is entertaining though and realizes that this is not everyones cup of tea so she has lively class discussions
Good teacher, her lectures are lively if you have intelligent students in your class to interact with
Took her class Spring 06, got an A in her class. Mrs. Hallinger is a real laid back professor, often postponing some deadlines. Her class theme was the War on Iraq and its relation to the Iliad. If you squirm at the sight of blood then this is not the class for you since you'll be discussing honor and the code of the warrior.
This woman is a disgrace to her profession. She has no business teaching a film history class. It would be like me teaching a cooking class because I like to eat. Unorganized, no meaningful lectures, the whole class is watching films, something that should be done outside class. THE WORST!!
Disgrace to her profession? Films should be viewed outside of class in a... film history class? Sorry, the poster below me is obviously smoking something very powerful. Hallinger is extremely nice, easy and a decent teacher. She definitely knows her stuff, and if you ask her to give it to you straight, she most definitely will.
Very easy and linient. I recommend her but she does give alot of homework though. I took her for Theart. Arts also and I passed pretty easily. Be careful though because she has a tendecy of loosing your papers but she still cool.
She has a very good taste in movies, but I found the lectures to be boring and unengaging. The class is pretty easy if you show up to class and do the assignments.
She is so easy! The class is fun, all you do is watch really good movies. Then you have a test on them. The questions on the test are really easy, and as long as you watch the movie, you will remember the very easy questions. (ie...Who does the character end up with at the end of the movie?) Take this class if you want to do well!
Best professor I've had at PCC so far. Lectures before the movie, provides important notes about movies which will be presented on the test. Very nice and helpful whenever i had questions about assignments or late work. Had friends taken other THART 7B professor and from what ive heard from them Hallinger is the best!
Pretty cool teacher. Always showing movies. It was fun attending her class. There was always some interesting class discussions, but ofcos the students have to be interactive ones. She allows late essays. Grade of A or B is certainly duable.
take this class if you are interested in the war and have opinions to contribute to class discussions. there is quite a bit of reading but she is really lenient about late assignments and such. do NOT take this class if you have no idea what is going on in the war, but overall she is a really nice teacher and you should still take her class
The reading is heavy the first half of the semester and then the writing is heavy at the end. She gives you the opportunity to revise your essays for a better grade so there's no reason you cannot get an A on them. My only complaint is that her lectures were kinda boring, but the reading material was good. Overall I recommend her!
The class is rather boring, though you watch films for most of it. Her lecturing is lacks exitment and causes you to just space out. She is an easy grader though, just be sure to do the essays and you can get away without having to read the book.
Easy class if you show up and watch the movies the test were open notes book took forever to find answers to cuz her notes really suck. You can get an A if you do well on the test.
I hate English but she made the class interesting. Lots of reading & writing - both of which I dislike. If you're a slacker, don't take her class. If you put in moderate effort, you'll get an 'A'. Attendance is important & participate in discussions. She is a wonderful lady. I learned a lot. Very lenient and approachable. I'd take her class again.
aw i love her, and will take more classes with her. too nice to her students! she is very peaceful and laidback. open to anything. realistic. great advice. good assignments, but should make the class a harder or else everyones going to want to become writers! i'm a english (writing) major. very approachable.
Allows you to redo your paper to get a better grade. Focuses on war & all aspects pertaining to it. A conservative like myself was not offended by her liberalness. Interesting topics covered. 12 reader responses, 2 group projects including papers, 1 veteran interview including paper, & 2 other papers. Brings in guest speakers to liven things up.
One of my favorite teachers, and probably the nicest person in Pasadena. Her class is easy, as long as you finsih the work. She'll let you redo papers, grades them easily anyways, and gives easy A's for presentations. What's great about her class is that she chooses subjects that are interesting for the students, not just her. A must at PCC.
ENGL 1C people stay away from this teacher! She's narrow minded and her assignments are random. I got a 89.54 in her class and she refused to give me an A even with perfect attendance.
very friendly and nice, but better take foster for theater arts.
Big waste of time...classroom was boring and most students who worked hard for an A passed with C's and B's.
if you have the time and patience good luck i hated this class it was really pointless
this is a CRITICAL THINKING class..key word being critical thinking! there is a lot of reading and a lot of writing. You will put some time in this class. Participation is highly encouraged, 2 out of class reports, apparently grades reports based on creative writing style. Def take this teacher! she is worth the hard work!
Ok just watch the movies listen to her lecture and have the notes she gives u for the tests and you will pass. Theres 2 term papers that you have to write and honestly they were EASY!! But then again I'm a good writer so idk wut it would be like for others. Shes really cool so just enjoy the movies thats about it! EASY A!
She's kool. 3 tests which cover 15 movies( 5movies per tests) and 2 papers. I Got A on both papers but fell to sleep during the movies so i ended up with a B. Well if you can pay full attention to the movies, gettin an A is doable. If you are like me who might fall to sleep n wanna ditch sumtimes, then take Foster. Overall she is good. Easy B !!!
DONT BUY THE TEXT BOOK, you really do not need it. this class is seriously chill. also you can bring a date haha. chill class, easy B. you'd have to actual work for an A. Hallinger is actually super brilliant so if you're a film major you'd enjoy her.
Bor-ing lecture. She shows films and then mutters and asks the same questions after each one. What's the point of what these particular films in this class? Reading a few on-line entries about the films will tell you as much as sitting through her chatter. Not stimulating. Easy, but that 's not the point of education.
Great Prof. Lots of reading and writing. Get assignments done asap. Stay up on world news and participate.
This teacher is very nice, consistently engaging, and overall does a great job at teaching what could be considered an esoteric subject. I did tire of hearing certain students prate on about everything under the sun except what related to the class, and wished she would cut them off - but I guess that would go against her quality of patience.
Jane Hallinger is the best 1C professor at pcc!!! no in class essays or test! you can revise ur essays! what more do you want! easy A! take her before her classes are full!
3 tests and 2 projects. If you have a good opinion which you can back up, you'll be fine for the projects, and for the movies, you just need to stay awake. EASY A! if you stay awake. If your like my friend who falls asleep then your still capable of getting a B. If you want a for sure A, just STAY AWAKE! Hallinger's cool though. I like her bike. :]
She was a nightmare. She will push and push her political views, and when u want to discus anything she will go into a stupid gaze where she ignores you.She never talked about the required materials for the essays.she blabbered on for the entire two hours about the news paper and what she thought was important. She is a horrible professor.
She was great! Very clear about what she wants in the syllabus, 2 simple projects, 3 tests, NO HOMEWORK. You watch movies every week and her tests are open note. She gives you study guides before all of the tests. She is funny and means well. I had no real interest in the subject and ended up loving the class. Easy A!
The best English teacher I have taken... by far the best.. this little old lady is very easy to talk too... Ask her anything and she will help you in anyway she can.. she assigns a lot of work, but its really easy.. got a B in the class... Lots of videos that she shows... Great professor.. Good job Prof. Hallinger.. !!
Easiest A for Theater Arts. there is a sign in sheet for attendance, and you sit through 3 hours of movie+short lecture. 3 exams on movies, 2 paper assignments. attendance is mandatory, but you can always just sign in and leave. the class is way too big for her to recognize anyone. but overall, she's a great teacher, shows concern for her students.
okay...helpful..can redo 1 paper essay (take advantage of this opportunity)out of 2 papers...honest lots of work...maninly reading about War war war...I think i know have PTSD...lol... watch movies...work project, veteran interview, newspaper report etc., Go to her office hrs, let her see you are trying and she will be generous...
I'm not gonna lie She really freaking hates Christians, but Other than that it's a chill class! Watch the movies, study the guides, and do the papers! You'll do fine!
dont do it. she is so cute and sweet but literally the most boring teacher i have ever had in my life. and i am not picky when it comes to teachers because i dont expect much.
the rating for this teacher are skewed because she teaches a theater arts class! pay attention to the class next to the rating! for english-DONT TAKE HER!! so boring and hard grader..
i literally think that i have mild PTSD from her class. all she does is talk about war and soldiers and veterans and vietnam. no class discussions, no interaction...boring, hard, not stimulating, dont take her for eng 1C. you wil regret it.
I haven't found her to be a good writing teacher. Her ability to manage a classroom is questionable, she allows former students to stop by and bore the class. She knows a lot about literature but seems focused on getting work published more than revising your writing so that it is the best it can be.
Shes funny and old and goes off on tangents. Her class is easy, open note tests, sign in sheet, reading the textbook is not even helpful, DON'T BUY IT. Her tests are pretty much from her study guides and the movies. The only thing that is possibly annoying about her is she talks so much before movies.
She is a very demanding teacher, but what can you expect from a higher level class. Life is not going to be any easier. She is a tough grader, but you just have to be able to write. She even explains to you everything on the first day of class, telling you that you should drop if your are not studious. Take this class and challenge yourself.
Hard grader but everything she has to say is EXTREMELY interesting. This class requires LOTS of work and outside research. Two papers 30%,13 reader responses 10%,debate paper 10%,news report 10%, group research project 20%, vet interview w/research paper 20%. Difficult class, but if you want to transfer it prepares you well. Hallinger is great !
She is a nice professor! Textbook is unnecessary! She smiles a lot in class and she likes to use the word 'tremendous' . Take her!!
You only need to put a little bit of effort at the beginning of the semester to let her know that you are trying (Hard). Then, you should be able to get As on the rest of the papers. that's how I roll. I got Bs on my first a few assignments then, I see the tutor after that As are all mine
Towards the end of the semester I had to miss a lot of classes due to illness and she would email me the assignments and encourage me not to drop. I felt bad missing class so much but I turned in all the assignments, presented my final with the class, and got an A! Thank you Professor Hallinger for the encouragement! She cares and you will learn!
We didn't use any textbook at all. There's no exam, only papers. Just follow the prompt, check your spelling and grammar, and you can easily attain an A in her class.
Took this class as part of the Honors Block - fantastic teacher. Understands film, literature and artistic expression - made my semester fly by. Great selection. BUT - don't skimp on the papers. There are only four all semester, while she seems very sweet and mild, she's razor sharp, do your best or she will penalize you. Approachable. Take her.
Stunningly good professor. Involved and interested in her students and teaching the material. Helpful and approachable, generous with time. Very good reading selection and literary analysis. Will go out of her way to help and has a knack for recognizing potential and talent - excellent educator. I hear she's leaving PCC, what a huge loss...
Sweet lady, easy going, knows a lot about film history. Not very structured tho. Every class just watched a movie. Grade based on 4 essays, 3 movie reviews. Can re-write essays as many times as you want. Is pretty picky about essays- you need to be specific. Don't expect to get by with vague comments or generalizations in essays. Do all essays
Very sweet lady but was difficult to understand. Attendance is mandatory in the sense that you may miss 6-7 questions on a midterm or final if you miss a night because one night = one whole movie. Attendance factors into her decision to bump your grade or not. Nice lady that is passionate about film!
Step 1. Epic Hotbox. Step 2. Class. Jane talks about a movie for 10 mins, then hits play. Step 3. Get an A for tripping balls while watching Taxi Driver. Weekly. Three "papers," spread out across 16 weeks. She even lets you re-write them if you suck. Three extra credit 2pg movie reviews. Chillest class at PCC, hands down. This lady is the sh*t.
She's a very sweet and compassionate teacher, gives good feedback. The creative writing course was all about sharing and critiquing material. She's also old-school, so not so accessible through e-mail.
Prof. Jane is literally a sweetheart. Would highly recommend her for art and literature enthusiasts. Majority of my class never bothered to strike a conversation with her but she really is a delight if you share the same passion. Movies, videos, reaction papers and a paper on The Plague at the end. Easy A and super sweet. Take her!
Very nice lady. We were assigned two books but there was a mishap at the book store so she canned one book and we watched videos based on the book instead. Papers on videos were assigned. Movie comparison paper. Book paper. Museum visit paper. Concert visit paper. Essay final. Do your work and you will pass. She will let you redo work if needed.
She's a sweet lady and is very considerate of her students. Not a good professor though. She picks great books but doesn't talk about literature, just reads news articles and rants about smart devices watching us for the government, North Korea and Trump. Procrastinators beware, no real due dates on any papers and re-writes allowed.
She has so much knowledge to offer students, she is just a sweet and amazing woman and human being. Highly recommended.
I really liked her. shes funny, insightful, and willing to help. participation in class and going to class are not totally necessary, your grade really depends on your papers. I would take her again. shes super cool!!
She gives you 5 essays to do over the term, and you can turn them whenever. So don't wait until the last minute, is very challenging if you are a procrastinator. Also her essay questions are kinda vague, not really a lot of context, so this is challenging when doing the essays. Overall, the class is was very easy, but it was boring during class.
I took Prof. Hallinger again two fall semesters ago. All we did was watch movies and have a little discussion at the end. We'd do multiple choice tests and I believe a few papers. I personally loved it because of the films she chose. We saw a few foreign films and films that became a favorite. She made me rediscover my love for cinema. Take her!
Easy A. As long as you obtain the instructions/ prompts for the papers and finish them on time then you will be ok. The prompts are vague so just follow a clear essay structure, follow min page req, cite correctly and share your own artistic opinion. She rarely lectures and usually just puts on a film. You don't need to watch the films to pass.
