I loved this prof's informal and enthusiastic style and i'd highly recommend her. The readings are hard but she makes them easy to understand in class discussion. I like english classes but she was also recommended to me by someone who doesn't like to write at all.
Confusing.
JUST TAKE HER! if u hate eng, shes going to make you love it! this is not an easy class but she definitely makes ur time and money worth it. i signed up for 301 too and trust me, i never sign up for the same teacher. even if u hate to think and participate in discussions, give her a shot! u wont regret itt!! i sure didn't :)
I took this class online at ARC. it was WONDERFUL! she was very clear with what she wanted and checked her messages more than once a day. essays are a little difficult but she will give you all the help you need TAKE HER! I'm going to take her 1B class at sierra for sure.
Professor Hemmerling is among my favorite professors. Her class is engaging; essay assignments are clear and at the same time give you ample room for expressivity. I really enjoyed the structure of her class: very interactive without too many akward group assignments, without arbitrary or perfunctory assignments.
she was a fun teacher and there wasn't too much work
this class was not too hard, you have i think 4 essays. all of them are 6 pages or more. they are not hard and she will help you on them. the only bad thing in you only have a week or so to do them. She lets you leave class early a lot and tells jokes. its a pretty fun class.
Class discussions are very interactive and interesting and the class is hardly ever boring. She also makes sure to make students feel welcomed and comfortable. The class was also very easy.
A good teacher, Very heavy reliance on the text, if you do not read thoroughly and highlight thenyou will fall behind on teh tests. She does a great job of teaching the in's and out's of argumentative english, and is more than willing to help with essay rough drafts. It helps if you have a way with words when writing the 3 essays for the class. +++
I did not like Prof. Hemmerling at all. She used the class strictly as a political springboard. I learned nothing about English or Composition WHATSOEVER! I Do NOT recommend taking her class.
I LOVE HER!!!!!!!!
Jane's a great professor. As an English major, it was refreshing to have a 1B that catered to students but didn't talk down to us. Her emphasis on critical theory has helped me a lot in subsequent lit. classes; some kids seemed to mistake her explanations of certain critical paradigms for political advocacy, but really she's very fair and unbiased.
Nice person and great teacher. She's very enthusiastic about what she teaches which makes the class really interesting! Definitely recommend her American Literature class.
Definitely would recomend, She is super nice and always willing to help you out. she makes the class interesting and has her own style. i would take her for any english class again. Her class is not hard either. a few essays that arent to hard at all. and minor hw and if she gives it out its easy. and the book you read is actually interesting.
Jane is awesome and very helpful. She does push you at a scholarly level, but you get the hang of it pretty quick. Her class was focused on sexuality even though it was English. Very interesting and fun class. Lots of reading, 3 essays and a research paper, but it works. Who ever wrote the comment below me obviously had an F in the class.
This class was amazing and I'm not an English major. The class had a theme of sexuality and media which I liked. Some of the articles were difficult but she explained concepts clearly and had a good sense of humor. Jane was easy to talk with and my writing and reading definitely improved.
I took her sexuality themed course and it was pretty cool. You take a look at a variety of sides in sexuality. Only 4 essays which were all pretty easy to do since we were able to use the articles that she gave us. If you like themes about sexuality and you can write decent essays this class is for you
Really awesome teacher. The different analysis readings were a little difficult, but she explains them in depth. Class discussion made the class flow, but she asked the kind of questions that really broaden your view on different pieces of literature. Easy quizzes if you actually read. Class depends on the fact that you actually read the material.
Very, very liberal; uses the class to promote liberal social justice agenda, which can get overwhelming & grating. Caters to whatever student is most socially disadvantaged. Sometimes a little snarky. Despite that, good, knowledgeable, passionate, not boring teacher.
NICE, but very exausting, she talks VERY loud, and is liberal to a point of suffocation, she is a very helpfull prof, BUT goes off on a wimb alot talks too fast for me. And way too much reading and tests almost everyday.
Awesome teacher. I left her class last semester feeling like an improved writer. I thank her for making me understand what it takes to be a great writer. Read the chapters in Burro Genius because if you do the quizzes are easy, but if you don't theyre impossible (trust me I tried, didn't work) But awesome awesome teacher!
Pretty good teacher. A little bit on the "hippy" side, but willing to work with the students. Great teacher for online classes (actually knows how to use Blackboard).
Never got an A on an English paper before this Prof Hemmerling. Even though the course didnt seem to thrill me with the whole discussion based learning (as most don't) I did really well in it. Wrote on one of my papers "Sure you dont want to be an English major?" Which did encourage me to stay in and finish the class.
She is a great teacher. She has sooo much energy it was hard to keep up with her! If I was an English major I would definitly take her again!
Professor Hemmerling is awesome. She is energetic and lou, and class can go by slow, she will go out of her way to help you. Some random quizzes, gives study guide, she is liberal, but if you can be respectful, she is also. You need the books. Definitely will take her again.
I have had Hemmerling for two classes--30A&B (one in-class, one online). For in-class she likes to give pop quizzes--SO DO THE READINGS! For online she has DB questions and likes extensive answers. She gives good notes. When attending class, take good notes--it will be on the midterm/final! Very good teacher!
Jane is very nice and helpful. The essay assignments are tough to get started on, but if you can b.s. your way through them you're good to go. Take them to the writing center and they will help you pull it together for an A grade. She's a bit unclear about and you have to fill in her thoughts but it's an easy class.
I freaking hate English, but I LOVED 30A. She knows the context of the literature we studied inside and out, and I walked away having learned so much. You can't get away without doing the reading, but if you put in an honest amount of work most of the time there's no reason you can't get an A. She is clearly a genius, but very helpful&approachable.
Eng 00A - we only had to read 2 books and one was a movie. she made it easy to attend. we got out practically early every day. She is cooky funny. I enjoyed having her. I thought I was going to fail, but ended up w/a B. My essay skills were bad, and she helped me tremendously. I will take her again! NO TEXTBOOK.
She did not seem very nice. She made things a bit confusing. I would not recommend her.
I love this teacher. Her lectures are very easy to understand, and I love how she involves the entire class. She is very helpful with questions, and guidence.
I don't know where everyone gets that she pushes political views, she taught my class in a fairly unbiased way while making it fun and interesting. She's very understanding of view points, late work, and the challenge some people have with analyzing literature, but this is what the class is, learning to analyze literature from different views.
This teacher is amazing. I had her for both English 1A & B and have learned so much from her great lecture and intellect on the world around her. She does an excellent job on making english classes interesting by revolving them around critical theories and sexuality. You get more then you pay for trust me! Take her class!!
Awesome teacher, very helpful, very easy to understand.
I took English 1A online with Professor Hemmerling. She was always quick to respond to questions in emails and cyber cafe. She chose very interesting topics to write about which made it easier to write about. I had never written an essay before this class and I ended up with an A. Just pay attention to the instructions and you should do fine.
Proffessor Hemmerling is great, I took her American lit online and thought it was the best online class I have ever taken, super organized, grades quickly. She chooses readings that are interesting so it makes reading them easier. Highly suggested!
I took this class online and was very skeptical. Professor Hemmerling was very clear on her expectations and projects. I learned a lot about writing in this class and I would highly recommend Professor Hemmerling for anyone taking this class. It's a lot of work, but well worth it. If you participate and do what she asks, you will get a good grade.
Professor Hemmerling is dedicated to both her students and the course. She made the course very interesting by picking topics which were in the social psychology category. Read, read, and read, and practice writing... a lot. She has you do a few essays and a research paper for the final. Easy A! Its an easy A if you follow her instructions exactly.
She's well organized online, and expects effort that any reasonable student is able to put forth. Tests are a bit tricky though; would suggest you reconsider if you cannot write two essays in a 24 hr period. I normally need longer and was stressed but I still got A's so shes not a strict grader. I had a 89.9 and she bumped to a 90.1 for the class.
This class is very doable. The reading is not too much or too hard. Just do your readings, the Db and you will ace the 2 papers and 2 exams. She is very friendly and helpful. She also grades quickly and not to harshly. Provides feedback promptly so you know you are doing it right.
The class has an appropriate amount of reading; some weeks are heavy, some are light. DB posts need to be thorough with text citations. Jane grades quickly, and always gives prompt feedback and replies. Read the lecture every week. She tells you exactly what's going on in if you don't understand the reading.
Easy A!!! All my assignments i got high grade. I was shocked. Very easy grader. I took English 1A twice before this class so i can say this class was easy even though it was online. Yes you will spend alot of time reading and writing; however, she grades based on your effort that you put in and not how clever you can write a paper like most do.
Jane is an awesome teacher! She was very specific with expectations, offered very explanatory lectures, and was very quick with replies if you needed help. Definitely need to read all assigned materials to be prepared for midterm and final. She made me a better writer this semester. I wish I could take more courses with her!
She is a great teacher. My only issue is that she wasn't clear on the midterm about any requirements and so I did really bad. Huge discussion boards and 2 5 page essays, plus essays for midterm and final.
Not nuts about this teacher. She has no online lectures, save one 4 minute introduction video at the beginning of the term. She doesn't instruct so much has you read a few essays from the text, then she posts a vague assignment. She makes errors in hers posts constantly, and doesn't grade assignments in any sort of timely manner.
Her syllabus was very clear with expectations for the class. As long as you do the reading assignments and make an effort on the essay, you will get a good grade. I loved the book that she chose. There were no long tests, just a few essays.
most organized and responsive teacher I have had online. Enjoyed the class discussions and documentary research project.
She doesnt over assign. The course does feel like a 3 unit course. That alone deserves a 4-star all the way through. The DBs were on the lite side. Again the assignments were not overboard. The course got a little too avant guard for my taste at the end. However the workload was fair, everything considered.
Jane is an amazing Professor. I'd definitely recommend her to anyone. Warning shes very honest and speaks her mind. It's very refreshing actually. Keeps the class interesting!
I have taken two online classes with Jane. She is an excellent teacher and isclear about assignments, organized and expects full online participation. Online DB posts with quotes from the text will help get a good grade. Read the lecture and DB questions prior to reading. Highlight relevant passages to use on DB posts, midterm and final.
She was a great english teacher! Her lectures are very thorough, I learned so much! I liked all of the reading material we were given during the class. It is hard, but if you work for it you can definitely get an A.
I took this class online expecting a ton of papers. Although, it was mostly discussion boards (one a week) and then a quiz on the reading. There were only 3 essays for the class and the grading was clear! Definitely would take her class again!
She was made for teaching. She comes into class with plenty of energy and is very knowledgeable and extremely passionate about what she does. Helpful and considerate of other peoples point of views.
Professor Hemmerling was awesome!! All of the assignments she assigned where thoughtful and she gave awesome feed back to improve throughout the year. I would definitely take this class again.
This class was structured nicely for those who want to do Online 1C. You can honestly do all your HW for the week in about 3 hrs. The class only has 3 exams, easy weekly quizzes and discussion boards. Make sure to read the articles for the week, which is a quick read, you will do fine on the quizzes. Don't waste youre time going to the campus. 99%!
She loves to use papyrus as her font. Other than that, the class was pretty easy. If I put more effort I could've gotten an A.
Awesome English Professor! There was always something new to learn in her class. With that said, this class(ENG1B) focuses on analyzing and responding to various pieces of literature, so be prepared to read, but don't worry too much, Professor Hemmerling is very fair when assigning work, so I never really felt overwhelmed.
Don't take this professor! I learned absolutely nothing. She tweaks her lectures to support her own political views. Her choice of literature in English 1B was distasteful and offensive. She would write nothing on a paper and then give it a B grade. When classmates and I asked for individual feedback she would say the exact same thing to all of us.
I loved the 1b selections and I learned a lot from her about analyzing culture. She is helpful and funny. She also allows for many view points.
There were 4 essays and quite a few reading quizzes. She gives a grade rubric with each essay. Easy points on group projects and presentations. This class will be a breeze if you already know how to present a strong thesis and back it up with evidence and analysis effectively. I got As on essays dealing with feminist theory and Bs on the others.
This is by far the best teacher I have ever taken. Her class is so easy. Make sure you read all of the books that she assigns, they're all interesting, and they all have to do with the quizzes given in class. Only 4 papers total in the semester and they are very clear.
Good professor, responds promptly to question board. I didn't enjoy the material in 1C and wished I had picked the literature class. Material is social/politically centered, but as long as you give good support for your analysis you are not graded on your opinions or hers. I hate doing essays, but she grades fairly, easy reading and workload light.
She's the type of professor that if you don't understand something, you need to refer to the syllabus, which was annoying. But overall the class was quite easy. I needed to get it out of the way and it was online so I spent no more than three hours a week to get the homework done. Great professor to just get those GE classes done and over with
A lot of writing, but she gives good feedback on how to make your papers better. You have plenty of time for your main assignment, with several classes devoted to planning and developing your final paper. She appreciates participation in class, so speak up when you have something to say. Very understanding if you get sick or something.
This class was very straightforward if you come to class and do your work you will easily pass with an A. There are a few books you have to read, 4 essays, 1 presentation, and 1 group presentation. She offers an essay revision for one essay, and you can write a short essay for extra credit. If offered the chance I would take this class again.
Definitely take this professor if you are just trying to pass english. I got 100% on everything, including every essay. Ended up with 101% because of the extra credit. Just make the length requirements & put in the effort & its an easy A. Easy assignments and essay prompts too, only 4 essays & one is super easy.
I took jane for 1B and she was definitely an easy A. She truly loves hearing from her students although her lectures can get pretty boring. It definitely not a class you will stressing like lets say math or science. but definitely, do the readings (she chooses EXCELLENT books) and the 4 essay prompts are clear and concise & she loves to help
Prof. Hemmerling is passionate and engages with the students. I really enjoyed this class. There is a discussion board and short answer assignment once a week. No quizzes or exams. Mid term and Final are written - just analyzing or comparing art. I took this over the summer so assignments may be different during a regular semester.
I took her online class, and she gave a manageable workload that I really appreciated.
I love english however this class was difficult. You are only given two absences for the entire semester. So basically if you are sick you have to get the entire class sick. Also the professor does not reply to emails so if you do miss class you wont get the handouts or anything from that class session.
I love her! This class was very manageable. Just discussion boards, quizzes that easily relate back to the text book, and 4 papers! Just follow all her instructions and you'll get an A. Highly recommend taking this class.
This is an easy class however I did not like how Professor Hemmerling graded papers. Her feedback isnt very helpful and it was hard to get started because she would never approve of the thesis statements. Theres a lot of quizzes in this class and 4 essays. One individual presentation and one group presentation. She isnt a very helpful Eng prof
Shes an amazing professor with awesome sarcasm. Dont take anything personal but she really does care if you care about her class. You will pass if you stay on top of your work. Its college not high school.
Professor Hemmerling was a great English online teacher. She was clear of what she expected and what she wanted the essays on. There was 3 big essays altogether & she graded fairly. You do use the book for the first few weeks for th DBs/ quizzes. She gives the opportunity to resubmit a revised essay. It was a fairly easy course, Im glad I took it.
She's ok. Some of her grading feedback doesn't make sense, and I'd be careful what you say if your opinion doesn't match hers. Lots of reading, but it's doable. Papers have very short time span, so get ready to plan ahead.
This class is fairly easy and has a manageable work load. You have weekly readings from the textbook which require a 250 word response and a short quiz which are fairly easy. The rest of the class consists of 3 essays, and you can resubmit one of them for a higher score. It seems as if she doesn't read the responses and skims through the essays.
This was my 1st time taking an online course. I was nervous, due to not knowing what it would look like, how tough of a grader my teacher would be, etc. BUT WOW!! If you are debating on taking this teachers class, please do. Yes, you do need to have active participation, but she is extremely reliable, helpful, and gives opportunity for easy points!
Professor Hemmerling was an incredible professor for english. You have a clear syllabus stating the papers, the books you will read, a couple of minor presentations, etc. She is encouraging and you can she that she has a real passion for the subject that she teaches! I loved taking her class! She inspired me!
I really liked the topics that were chosen to write the essays on there are only three essays and you can rewrite your lowest essay for a better score. As long as you follow the rubric you'll score high on the essays. DB every week on interesting topics. The Cyber Cafe you have to participate in 10 times throughout the semester in order to get cred
Amazing teacher. Her online class is set up so well. I actually enjoy doing her homework and reading. Its a breath of fresh air from some other professors I have. She knows what she's doing and gives great feedback.
I am currently taking her class and I love it. Her grading is easy, if you do what she asks you will get full credit, she clearly says what she expects. Workload is not too hard, you do read a lot, however, I enjoy it. Every week there is a discussion board and quiz but its easy. She emails back quick and seems to always be there if one has a ?
She is not helpful. Because of that, I had to drop my class. She didn't help every time I asked her for help. I won't take her as my professor again and I won't recommend you take her as your professor. I don't know if she was biased with me or not but honestly speaking she was not a good professor to me.
If youre an English Major, shes the only professor available for this subject which sucks because she sucks. Its pretty much a self taught class and shes never really active online. The way she does the final and the midterm is garbage. She gives you like 4 prompts but doesnt tell you which one shes going to use until she makes it available.
I loved her english class. She chose interesting books to read and while it is reading heavy it is expected for english 1B. It was a pretty easy class, there was a lot of writing but again it was expected and she graded them more per completion. She had a discussion board Cyber Cafe where she always replied within a day or the same day.
Wasn't too hard. There were three essays, two of which were based on books. Didn't read either of them and got a B on one and an A on the other. There were a couple of DBs. They all required 3 responses. There weren't any lectures or anything.
Professor Hemmerling in this class is the only available teacher. She is a very strict grader, ie she will not accept late discussion boards or take a student's mental health into account.
There are only 4 essays for this class and at the end of the course, you can write rewrite one for EC. Each week there was either something new to read, these often being long, or watch a movie. There is also a Discussion Board each week where you need to have 3 responses. You are not graded on a lot, but other than that the class was not hard.
Easy A if you follow the syllabus and rubrics. 4 essays, DB every week, and lots of reading involved, but books assigned are super interesting and worth reading. Hemmerling always responded to my emails and students in the Cyber Cafe, and gives great feedback that helps you improve on work. Offers EC. Take her if you're willing to apply yourself!
Jane Hemmerling is an excellent English professor who is straightforward with her expectations and grading and will always provide help if you ask. Her class is super interesting; the subject matter is based on social issues and current events. The class is less about reading assignments and more about researching and writing, which I prefer.
In the ENGL1B class I took there were only 4 essays in the 16 week semester. Be prepared to read novels and do weekly DB. She gives great feedback and is always on top of responding to emails.
Hemmerling does not offer extra credit, no biggie as long as you submit quality work on weekly discussions. A couple of authors were assigned each week. Really cool material and there were 4 essays total. 2- regular (5 pg) 1 for the midterm and 1 for the final. Make sure you keep up with the Norton reading!
took this as a late start class (8 weeks instead of 16 weeks) and it was pretty much what i expected! decent amount of reading / discussion boards / quizzes but not bad at all if you read the textbook. she's a pretty easy grader as long as you follow criteria. pretty neutral opinion!
A good professor. Weekly you have some textbook reading, a short story/book reading, and a short quiz on each. She does not post any lectures. I found the textbook and books for her class online for free, you just have to search for them. 4 essays total, follow the rubric and you will be fine. She responds fast and offers extra credit.
The professor grades exactly to the rubric; as long as you complete the criteria, you will do fine. Quizzes are generally easy. Discussion board posts are engaging and on interesting topics. We wrote 4 essays in the whole term, they can range from four pages to eight. Overall, she is a fair grader and gives good feedback.
Professor Hemmeriling grades very accurately and if I'm being quite honest a little too easy. I got 100% on every essay and even a B on an 8 page essay I only wrote 5 pages for. Finished the class with an A. If you're looking for a more laid back English class this is it.
The class is not difficult but it does leave a lot to be desired. There's no teaching or lectures, just checklist assignments based on reading. While the essays aren't difficult whatever feedback she provides is lacking in detail to be of any benefit to her students.
She is a great Professor. She always answers emails very fast. She gives very helpful feedback to your assignments and essays. She is an easy grader Professor. I highly recommend her.
Hemmerling is a great teacher who loves her subject and really wants to see her students succeed. Weekly discussion/assignment and 4 papers of various lengths. She is readily available for questions and concerns. Honestly I think she was an easy grader as long as you follow the rubrics and guidelines. Assigns interesting and short readings.
Honestly, this class makes you critically think and analyze the text/ documentaries (that is the difficult part). If you work on your assignments when they are assigned and make appointments with the writing center for extra assistance, if needed, it should be an easy A. Follow the grading criteria and DONT procrastinate.
By it's very nature this class has a ton of assignments, so stay on top of everything. One thing that makes it easier is that Prof Hemmerling grades how well you communicate your analysis (thesis and conclusion mostly) more than anything else, so you can run whatever direction you want. Papers were all graded within 24hrs, which was great.
Professor Hemmerling was AMAZING! We read quite a few things but most were plays or graphic novels, no longer than 200 pgs. We took reading quizzes after finishing the books, & only wrote 4 essays which she gave plenty of time for. Overall she's a very easy grader if you try. Highly recommend - coming from someone who doesn't like English.
I loved this class! We read current and engaging literature, nothing outdated and boring, which I really appreciated. We learned how to critically analyze literature, which proved to be extremely interesting. I found the quizzes and course work to be on the easier side, and I liked the essays topics. Would definitely recommend Professor Hemmerling!
Super easy class very straightforward. you do have to buy some of the books but you can find most online. You basically read everyweek and do a discussion and quiz with 4 major essays and no tests/final. no random assignments so you actually learn the course material. Shes also super nice. easier than my eng 1a class
Good professor. Class was pretty easy if you do the assignments. Quizzes about every other week. 1 group presentation, 1 individual presentation, and 4 essays. She is on top of grading too which is nice. Kind of a boring class though.
I love the layout of the course. You use a critical theory textbook throughout the course to analyze texts through different lenses. I loved this approach and found each theory genuinely fascinating. The discussion boards were great to learn from others' perspectives/interpretations. Professor is knowledgeable+provides straightforward instruction.
Avoid if you're a STEM major, not worth the time. She's for people with English-oriented majors. Each week you read a 10-20 page text that requires 2-5 re-reads to understand (she literally suggests this). A lot of the texts have great meaning but are UNBEARABLE and just babble on and on and on... There's 4 essays: three are 5-6 pgs, last is 8-10.
She's very knowledge and kind professor. For essays focus on strong thesis statements and you will do well. Presentations were fun and I liked the connect a song assignment aspect.
Prof H is a caring teacher. I loved the books she picked and she is very enthusiastic about the literature. My favorite was Stone Butch Blues about a trans person. Very eye opening! High recommend her.
Amazing prof! Gave helpful feedback on essays, especially thesis. Not strict with the essay formatting and focuses a lot on the ideas you have. Very kind and understanding, just communicate with her! 2 presentations (indiv + group), pretty much a quiz for every story/play/book (5-6 questions), offered 1 extra credit
I enrolled in her class online and I genuinely believe as long as you submit essays under word count with a decent thesis, you will do well. People evidently used AI on all the discussion boards and there never seemed to be an issue (though I am not sure of their final grades). EASY, even with minimal effort.
good professor and responsive
Online course, 4 essays and like a dozen different short stories or plays to read. Every week had 1 discussion about the reading, 2 posts + 2 comments with things due Tues and Thurs so you have to be active. Some weeks had no reading so you could focus on essay, draft due early on then final draft later in week, had to review 2 peer drafts.
Jane was an inspirational and amazing prof. She made really hard material easy to digest and connected things to the real world. Grades for ideas and not grammar.
Prof. Hemmerling is a great English professor! She cares about your success and will help you navigate your academic journey in the course (if you ask for it). 4 papers- all easy if you do the reading, understand the concepts of crit theory, and how they CAN be applied. Graded on a well structured thesis and your ideas.
Prof Hemmerling is awesome! Most weeks consisted of a few pages of reading and a discussion board, which was always pretty easy. She's a very lenient grader for the 4 essays that you have to write and you can pick your own topics. The final project is an 8 page essay but she gives you literally a month to write it. Wonderful teacher and class!
In general Prof Hemmerling was fine, but I did find it annoying how her weeks are scheduled from Thursday-friday instead of Monday-sunday like every other professor. It definitely made it difficult for me as someone who works full time and does school. She has weird deadlines which is whatever but just small things I thought she was annoying for.
Takes points off and doesn't reflect the reason in her feedback. Poor scheduling, weeks are Friday-Thursday.
