Last time I checked, charges of grade inflation generally aren't aimed at science depts. Just in case, however, Prof. Martin is determined to enforce a strict policy of grade deflation. She designs her tests to get a 50% average. Her husband is an MD and prof. at UCSF, so I suspect she is doing her part to help weed out "substandard" premeds.

If you've never failed a class before, you will fail this class for sure. Don't know why they still let Martin "teach" (using the term lightly), but like other people have said, she doesn't care about students & gets upset when students ask questions. Martin is one terrible teacher. She definitely doesn't care about students. She loves seeing students fail. She still doesn't get what that tells her as a professor. attendance is mandatory!homework can be hard because you cannot find the answer directly from the book or lecture. she might explain the homework but it's only after you turn it in so no use. after 5 problem of the day it becomes extra credit but it gets harder so there is no use. quiz, problem of the day, homework every week and 3 exams and 1 final

after reading the comments on here about prof martin, i was scared to take this class, half way in and i am actually doing pretty well. this class isn't as hard as everyone says it is if you just keep up with everything. i was never interested in chem, until i took this class

I love how those of you who stood up for Jane said, "It's not hard to pass... IF YOU READ THE ENTIRE BOOK, PAY FOR TUTORS, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, DON'T PLAN ON SLEEPING FOR THE ENTIRE SEMESTER, STUDY YOUR NOTES, DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORK, ETC." I know I can't be the only one who sees the problem here...

This class isn't is hard as people say it is, it's actually pretty manageable if you just pay attention. Just pay attention to her lectures and read her notes to study and you will do fine. I didn't really have to read the book, but it would help. I wouldn't recommend this class as GE, just take it if it's mandatory for your major.

Jolie's class is awesome. prior to this class, i hadn't really had that many great english teachers, but i'm glad she whipped me into shape. you won't be bored, the material is interesting. Beware, she's a hard grader and you can't just float by in this class. but put the effort forth and you'll realize she really cares about every single student.

Awesome teacher. She gives lively lectures and will improve your skills for writing essays. She is only a tough grader if you don't follow her guidelines for the essay; as long as you follow her rubrics, you'll get an A. Jolie is also quite the character, even though my class was the dullest group of kids at sfsu she kept the material interesting.

There were 4 essays, 1 revision essay of the 4 essays, lenient attendance, must bring class reading materials (short stories or book). There is no quiz, no test (practice jepet for final), & not alot of hw. She is: an easy grader if you have good organization in your essays, h.s. teacher, & animated. SHE GIVES PUSH BACKS ON DUE DATES OF ESSAYS.

Great teacher to have early in the morning. 6 essays in total, including the final (JEPET). Must pass essay 3 and 4 to pass the class. Attendance can affect your grade, so attend class! Bring materials to class, there are no quizzes or tests, just essays. She accepts one late essay, and she can help you with your essay if you're stuck.

There HAS to be a problem with this woman. She makes comments in class saying "I noticed a lot of you struggled with this last quiz, that means..study harder." no Martin, that means you need to START teaching for once. If get an answer correct on the test she will STILL mark points off if your explaination for why it's correct is not thorough enoug

well you have to go to class every single day, theres a problem of the day, quiz, and hw due every week. its a lot of work but it helps alot. i got a B cuz i did all of it. the tests are a little challenging but passable if u do the practice tests. sometimes she acts like dumb and deserves a roundhouse kick to the face

I really enjoyed her grading & teaching styles. I suggest do not take her class w/out a prior background of chem. Def not an easy class w/out a chem background. She gives out LOTS of extra cred, curves everything, and HW,quiz, & tests are all very straight forward! Lots of grades, so lots of chances to catch up. Difficult if youre not good at chem

Very cool teacher, you definitely gonna take her for your ENG 114 class. There aren't many assignments, just a couple of essays in the whole semester. And, she lets you revises one/two of them for a higher grade.

trying to think, does she have any redeeming qualities, any at all -- um, NO. the only thing she hates more than you (the student) is chemistry... this is evident by her lack of knowledge and lack of enthusiasm when teaching.

looks lik SFSU really will hire anyone! like others have alrdy said, if you dont care about ur future, go ahead and take martins classes. shes seriously incompetent but the chair told me its hard to find someone to teach biochem. i guess ineptness is better then nothin at all!

she must have some serious dirt on someone in the chem dept. she has NO business teaching, especially chem. she takes simple concepts & totally screws them up. she expects you to know everything BEFORE she teaches. if you've got some money to burn, go ahead and waste it on her classes. otherwise, take it with someone else (who's actually qualified)

Jane is nice &tries to be helpful;she is better explaining stuff 1-on-1 or by email. But her lectures are incomprehensible & I spent most of my time this semester learning on my own from her lecture notes & a non-class text. Tests are straightfwd but weekly quizzes suck.Don't bother with the text - just do her supplemental questions &practice tests.

This teacher is extremely hard, you need to follow her prompt from her syllabus exactly or you will end up failing. She seems to favor students and grades extremely hard. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unless you are on her good side you will FAIL. The essay's are taught based on her opinion, your opinion doesn't mean**** in this class.

If you don't follow the rubrics exactly, you WILL NOT PASS. However she's extremely helpful, and requires a grading conference to go over essays with you. In short, listen to her instructions and follow her directions and you'll be fine.

Hmm, I wonder why there are reviews for an English teacher? They are bringing up Martin's rating. I guess we'll have to fix that, huh? Lucky for you, Martin has been fired, but we all still hate her for ruining our lives.
